Pack your needles and your favorite sweater—we're heading to Alaska with Irish knitwear designer Carol Feller! Who wants to join us on a 7-day knitting adventure aboard the Holland America Noordam? My dear friend Carol and I can’t wait to invite you on board for a spectacular knitting party! Carol and I met over 10 years ago when we both started on our knit design journey. Every time I brought a group to Ireland (where Carol lives), we would have an extended knitting class with her, and then head off to the next stop on our itinerary. We want more time together… so we are going on a cruise!

Carol is one of the most joyful, generous teachers I know. Trust me, you are going to love her. Together, Carol and I will be your guides as we cruise the stunning Inside Passage, taking in glaciers, wildlife, and some of the most amazing scenery on the planet—all while knitting our faces off every single day (and night).

I'll be designing a brand new knit just for this cruise. Last time we went to Alaska, our cruise design had glaciers, bergy bits, and blowholes!! Knitting classes will take place on sea days, so you can explore when we are at port!

Tips and Tricks for Knitting with Sequins

Last December, I stumbled across Dana’s sequin-filled holiday sweater, and I knew I had to design something with it for my small knitted kit club, Lola’s Choice. The way those sparkles caught the light — how very Lola!

So I went on a mission to find the perfect sequin yarn to make Lola's bling dreams come true. After some searching, I found a supplier and ordered more yarn than I ever have in one shipment. Go Bling or Go Home!

And that's how the Blingola Collection was born!

Blingola Scarf is worked tip to border, you’ll start with just a few stitches — and quickly get acquainted with your sparkly new yarn. With my favorite boomerang shaping, this wearable scarf goes with everything, including a turtleneck and jeans OR your fav LBD (little black dress). Need something to throw on for a holiday party? I’ve got you!

Three Tips for Knitting with Sequins

1. Always work at a loose gauge

If your stitches are too tight, the sequins can't slide through. Use a looser gauge so your sequins can really sparkle.

2. Pop your sequins to the front as you knit

As you're working, use your index finger to give each sequin a little nudge into place. Push them through to the side where you want them to show—this ensures they're sitting pretty on the right side of your fabric.

3. Trim sequins from your tails before weaving in ends

Before you weave in those yarn tails, carefully cut off (or slide off) any sequins. This keeps your ends neat, tidy, and snag-free.

Into the Hoods: A Mystery Knit Along Packed with Six Hooded Patterns

Into the Hoods was our Fall ‘25 mystery knit-a-long that offered a whopping six hooded patterns in one knitting adventure!

Over each of the four clues, knitters worked through the suspense of creating a hood without knowing exactly where the trail would lead. Each knitter chose their own path—picking between the Balaclava, Dickey, or Scarf style, and deciding whether to work in a single color or two coordinating colors. That's six different options, all from one knit along!

And now, the mystery is revealed. You get to choose exactly which hood suits your style… check them out!

Balaclava

This hood joins into the round and works down to create a snug, versatile accessory that does double duty. Wear it as a cozy cowl around your neck, or flip it up to cover your nose and mouth when the wind really bites. The optional casing and drawstring let you cinch it just right, keeping the cold out and the warmth in.

Dickey

For those who want coverage without the bulk, the Dickey is your answer. Short rows shape the back of the neck before a yoke increase expands the piece to drape over your shoulders and tuck under your jacket. It's the perfect layering piece—offering warmth where you need it most without adding bulk. An optional drawstring casing lets you adjust the fit. The Dickey even has an option to add an internal face covering… which makes it a Dickey and a Balaclava all in one!

Scarf

If you love a good wrap and crave that scarf vibe with your hood, this one is the way to go. The hood splits into two halves that work down with short rows filling in at the back of the neck. Decreases taper each side to a point, creating long scarf tails perfect for wrapping, draping, or tying around your neck however you like.

HOW IT WORKS:

Pick one of the three patterns and decide whether to work in a single color or two coordinating colors. Then purchase the pattern for the style you want to make, and you'll receive a PDF with everything you need to know so you're ready to cast on. Next, watch the video tutorials in this playlist to guide you through each step.

I promise you won't get lost in your stitches. Between these in-depth instructional videos, Ravelry and Facebook group support, and our "no knitter left behind" policy, you'll be hoodwinked in only good ways, I promise!

Let’s get into the yarn… 

Into the Hoods can be knit with a single color to keep things simple, or with two coordinating colors if you want to go DEEPER into the woods with your stitches!  You can knit your hood with DK, Worsted or Aran weight yarn. The heavier the yarn you use to get gauge, the denser your fabric will be. 

CHOOSING YOUR YARN

Watch the TRAILER before you go shopping or stash diving!
Let your knitertainment help you decide what yarn to use!
If you want your hood to drape, I suggest working with a DK or worsted weight; if you want it to be super warm, go for an Aran weight.
For the scarf version, I suggest working with DK-weight yarn so that the Scarf is nice and flexible to wrap around your neck. In a heavier weight, the knit fabric will be stiffer and the scarf quite bulky. One of the scarf versions I made used a fingering-weight held together with a laceweight suri-alpaca. At the gauge called for, the fabric is a freaking dream!

If working a Two-Color Option:

Your MC and CC should contrast with each other at all times.
You may use solid, variegated, gradient, OR speckled skeins for your MC and CC as long as they contrast with each other.
I chose for my MC to be solid and my CC to be the party, but this can easily be switched!
If both the MC and CC are highly variegated or speckled, you are going to lose some of the contrast, so it is a good idea to keep one of them mellow!
Dyed in the Wool yarns (like Spincycle, Junction Fiber Mill, Feederbrook Farms, Yarn Hero, Ewetopia, your own Handspun) will work really well as your CC.
If you are working the Balaclava or Dickey versions, your CC can be a gradient; if working the scarf, that won’t work as well.

Pack your needles and your walking shoes—we’re headed to Japan (and South Korea!) for a once-in-a-lifetime blossom-filled knitting adventure on board the Holland America Westerdam.

We’ll cruise around the coast of Japan at the perfect time of year—cherry blossom season—exploring historic cities, peaceful gardens, and centuries-old traditions. The focus of this trip is clear: gardens, traditional handicrafts, and fiber arts. We'll visit the Tokyo bead district, delve into sashiko and indigo dyeing, eat delicious local delicacies, visit historic temples, and soak in the inspiration of Japan's artistry and natural beauty. And of course, you’ll have plenty of time to knit, learn, connect, and create onboard.

Knit Short Socks: Meet My Seven Shortie Patterns

Let’s hear it for knitting short socks. They’re cool in hot weather, they keep your feet happy on wooded hikes, farmer’s market forays, and neighborhood strolls. Their heels add just enough padding to keep your shoes from being jerks—plus they’re short.

Wool is the secret weapon here: breathable, moisture-wicking, and magically not stinky. Whether you’re an athlete, a couch potato, or a bit of both, wool shorties are where it’s at—and they’re not long.

Sunshine and Stitches: Discover 12 Delightful Summer Sweater Knitting Patterns

Summer is around the corner, and that means it's time to put away those bulky wool sweaters and pick up some lighter yarns to create the perfect summer sweater.

While the weather might be warming up, that doesn't mean we have to stop knitting. Cool summer evenings and overly air-conditioned spaces demand a lightweight hand-knit layer.

I've rounded up some of my favorite summer sweater patterns that were designed specifically for staying cool and comfortable without sacrificing style. And of course, Lola (my alter ego) felt compelled to share her opinion on each pattern, keep an eye out for those! Whether you prefer long-sleeve, short-sleeve, or tank-top knits, there's something for everyone.

For those really hot days, we've got tank tops! Bling, Solar, and Jamie Lee each offer a unique look but are all comfortable and stylish. If short sleeves are more your preference, check out Solar T, Janet Leigh, Novel T, and Pacificus DK. These patterns are all designed to keep you cool while still providing a bit of upper arm coverage. 10 Ideas for Charity Knitting

As the Knit for Food Knit-a-Thon nears, many of us are starting to plan the projects we’ll be working on for those TWELVE hours of crafting. This has become a big topic of conversation over in the Knit For Food Facebook Group!

Recently the idea of charity knitting came up, so we decided to put together a list of organizations for anyone interested in using their needles for good.

I also want to say that I support anyone knitting for whatever reason they want! If that is charity, great! If that is to make yourself a sweater, great! If you are knitting something for one of your donors, awesome! How ever you decide to use your time is the right way. Being a part of the knit-a-thon and spreading the word is already commendable work!

If you want to donate your handwork, there are so many ways to do that!
Below is a list of organizations we are inspired by:

1. Loose Ends Project

Loose Ends is a global network of volunteer finishers who step in when a handmade project is left unfinished due to a loss. Handmade items hold so much love, and when a project is left undone, that connection can feel lost. Loose Ends matches skilled handwork finishers with these projects, ensuring they’re completed and returned to their loved ones as originally intended. It’s a beautiful way to turn unfinished stitches into lasting legacies.

2. Lasagna Love

Laura's Da Love pattern is free... knit one and share it with a Lasagna Love chef near you!

We learned about Lasagna Love when they talked about their work during 2021's knit-a-thon. If you haven't heard of Lasagna Love they are a global nonprofit and grassroots movement that aims to positively impact communities by connecting neighbors with neighbors through homemade meal delivery. Their aim is not only to help address the incredible rise in food insecurity among families but also to provide an act of love and kindness. The mission is simple: feed families, spread kindness, and strengthen communities.

3. Think local!

There are places in every community that accept donations: the NICU at your local hospital, Cancer Resource Centers, homeless shelters, mutual aid groups, etc. Call around and ask your local knitting guild or LYS… they are sure to have a list.

4. Knit the Rainbow

At least 40% of homeless youth in New York City identify as LGBTQ+. Knit the Rainbow works to empower and protect these youth by providing them with handmade knit & crochet winter clothing accessories.

5. Foster Care to Success Red Scarf Project

The care package program is an opportunity to give a little that means a lot. The Red Scarf Project sends handmade scarves each winter to a college student from foster care.

6. Project Linus

Project Linus sends new handmade blankets to children in need. Blankets are lovingly made by adults and children from all walks of life and many different sources.

7. Warmth For Warriors

Warmth for Warriors is dedicated to supporting our soldiers both active and retired. Handmade items from us help boost morale and let our soldiers know we are grateful for all they do.

8. Knitted Knockers

Knitted Knockers are special handmade breast prostheses for women who have undergone mastectomies or other procedures to the breast. Traditional breast prosthetics are usually expensive, heavy, sweaty, and uncomfortable. Knitted Knockers on the other hand are soft, comfortable, and free to those requesting them.

9. Mother Bear Project

Mother Bear Project is dedicated to providing comfort and hope to children affected by HIV/AIDS in emerging nations by giving them a gift of love in the form of a hand-knit or crocheted bear.

10. The Magic Yarn Project

The Magic Yarn Project crafts character wigs for children with medical hair loss. Their mission is to bring magic into the lives of children battling cancer and to inspire volunteerism to make a difference.

11. Welcome Blanket

Handcraft makers (knit, sew, quilt, crochet, weave, felt, etc.) are invited to make Welcome Blankets. They include notecards with stories important to their families about immigration/migration/relocation to create symbolic and practical gifts of welcome for new refugees coming to the United States.

Itinerary

Day 1: 9 November 2025 HOLA AND WELCOME TO MADRID!

Transfer to your capital city hotel and meet with your fellow knitters and your guide, CECILIA FERRARI! Enjoy a Welcome Brunch before setting out to celebrate the Feast of the Almudena! Join in with the locals and see processions, listen to live music, and taste local foods from the stalls and carts dotted around with foods created especially for the day. Visit Miss Kits, a fabulous Madrid yarn store, before a Welcome Drinks Reception and dinner at a nearby restaurant.

Day 2: 10 November 2025 MUSEUMS, KNITTING AND PAELLA!

The first half of the day is at your leisure for shopping and exploring Madrid. You may wish to visit the
Tapestry Museum (Real Fabrica de Tapice), the Costume Museum (Museo del Traje de Madrid), the
Royal Palace of Madrid or Reina Sofia National Art Centre or another one of Madrid’s many cultural
gems. In the afternoon, join Laura at the hotel for a knitting class to learn the secrets of your tour design. And then time to roll up your sleeves and learn to make Paella at The Cooking Clubhouse! The in-house professional Chef will guide you step by step through one of Spain’s most iconic recipes keeping our wine glasses full all the while!

Day 3: 11 November 2025 WOOLDREAMERS AND DON QUIXOTE COUNTRY

Travel into the La Mancha region and experience WoolDreamers. This mill is focused on heritage, roots, craftsmanship, nature, and humanity, encompassed in excellence and authenticity. Enjoy a comprehensive guided tour that gives us complete insight into their yarn-making process and receive a little gift! Enjoy lunch before a tour and tasting of Mont Reaga winery. We’ll then visit Museo-Casa Dulcinea del Toboso before continuing onto Castillo De Belmonte, a medieval castle on the hill of San Cristobal. WHAT A DAY!

Day 4: 12 November 2025 MEDINACELI AND ZARAGOZA

Today we will say adios to Madrid and board our bus to head east and south. First, we'll stop in the charming town of Medinaceli to stretch our legs and admire the only preserved triple arch in Spain, (dating back to the 2nd and 3rd centuries). We'll have a lovely lunch and then continue on to Zaragoza. Zaragoza, the capital city of the province of Zaragoza is famous for its two majestic cathedrals, a fortified Islamic palace in the city centre, monumental remains of the Roman Caesar Augusta, and one of the most diverse gastronomic scenes in Spain. There will be free time in the afternoon to explore this beautiful city and enjoy dinner at a local restaurant or chill at our hotel.

Day 5: 13 November 2025 THE ROAD TO BARCELONA!

Today we gently meander towards Barcelona. We will be stopping in one of the oldest towns in Catalonia region - Lleida, famous for its natural beauty, the Lleida Museum, and the Seu Vella de Lleida cathedral. We'll have a traditional leisurely group lunch at a local restaurant and then continue on to Barcelona where we will be based for the rest of the trip! Take the evening to relax and get to know the area around our excellent Hotel Seventy. This hotel was made for knitters... from the rooftop to the lounges, it is the perfect base to explore the city together!

Day 6: 14 November 2025 GAUDI, GOTHIC QUARTER and YARN!

After breakfast, we take a guided tour of the most recognizable of all of Barcelona’s architecture - La Sagrada Família. It's a giant Basilica that has been under construction since 1882 and it's not expected to be completed for some time yet. Afterwards, we will have an extraordinary walking tour through Barcelona's Gothic Quarter. In the afternoon, visit Lalanalu yarn shop to meet the hosts of Barcelona Knits and receive your event wristband. This evening, we go to Gaudi’s masterpiece, La Pedrera!

Day 7: 15 November 2025 BARCELONA KNITS, AND FLAMENCO!

Join your coach after breakfast and travel the short distance to the BARCELONA KNITS FESTIVAL on the Barcelona waterfront, overlooking the Balearic Sea. Enjoy the many activities going on throughout the day and make the most of all the stalls! Sign up for a class should you desire!This evening we visit El Tablao De Carmen, for flamenco and dinner!!! Olé!

Day 8: 16 November 2025 BARCELONA KNITS DAY 2 and Nuria Picos!

After a leisurely Sunday breakfast, you may join your shuttle for a return to the water’s edge and BARCELONA KNITS! More of the same wonderful learning, shopping, and socializing in the fun and lively festival! This afternoon return to your hotel for an exclusive embroidery class with Nuria Picos, who will share her phenomenal embroidery skills with us! We'll be working on a design inspired by Barcelona and Gaudi's architecture.

Day 9: 17 November 2025 MONTSERRAT, SANGRIA MASTERCLASS

After breakfast, we take a scenic train and cable car to Montserrat - a beautiful Benedictine monk mountain retreat northwest of Barcelona city. In the Montserrat Monastery Museum, you can see works by important artists such as Dalí, El Greco, Monet, and Giordano. Not only is Montserrat
Monastery of significant religious importance but the natural beauty surrounding the monastery is
simply breathtaking. Many come just to see the statue of the Black Madonna, patron saint of
Catalonia. This evening join us for a Sangria Masterclass in our hotel and a farewell dinner.

Day 10: 18 November 2025 ADIOS!

Our Spanish adventure draws to a close as our chauffeur transfer takes you to the airport for your return home. As we transfer you to the airport, bid farewell to Spain, but remember you are bringing treasured memories, new skills, and great friends with you!

The Cozy Appeal of Knitted Hoods

There’s no denying it—knitted hoods are the snow-stopping accessory of the season! Whether you’re bundling up for a frosty walk, running errands, or headed to the slopes, hoods are stealing the spotlight this year.

My fashion forecasting skills must be on fire because I've been designing hoods left and right!

Cowltopus was 2024's MKAL (mystery-knit-a-long) and was inspired by the mantle of an octopus. Cowltopus is worked in two colors, from the top of the hood downwards, and it has detailed video tutorials for walking knitters through every step of the pattern.

Hoodola came along after Cowltopus's reveal. It has the same shaping as Cowltopus, but the stitches are simpler—the Hoodola pattern is accessible for all, from fearless beginners to expert knitters looking for a soothing knit to sink their needles into. Into the Hoods was our Fall ‘25 mystery knit-a-long that offered a whopping six hooded patterns in one knitting adventure!

Over each of the four clues, knitters worked through the suspense of creating a hood without knowing exactly where the trail would lead. Each knitter chose their own path—picking between the Balaclava, Dickey, or Scarf style, and deciding whether to work in a single color or two coordinating colors. FAQs

Do you have a crochet version?
No, sorry! I’m not a crochet designer, and I’m not quite sure where to start to convert these to crochet!

Do you sell finished Hoods?
GAH, I wish I could… I am not a fast enough knitter, nor do I have enough hours in the day. If you really want one, maybe it is time to learn to knit! I suggest starting with a simple washcloth or two, and once you have knit and purl stitches down pat, it is time to attack Hoodola!

Which pattern is better for a new knitter?
Hoodola or Scoodola! It has the same shape as Cowltopus, but the stitches are way simpler.

I love Cowltopus, but I’m scared of brioche…is there another option?
Yes! Cowltopus comes with two options for the neck. You can work it in two-by-two ribbing or brioche. The videos walk you through both options.

Note that LED Fairy Lights come in a variety of options: copper or silver wire, indoor or outdoor (or both), battery-operated or USB plug-in, and you can even get colored lights. Make sure you think about where you want to hang your star before you purchase your lights so you have the correct strands. I have a battery-operated one for outdoors that we use in the winter on a tree, and in the summer when we camp! But for indoor use, I love the USB plug-in lights.

Tips for knitting (or crocheting) with a string of lights

Stitching with light requires a few additional considerations compared to regular knitting projects.

TEST your lights before you start knitting with them! This is important as sometimes they arrive broken.
You will likely need to rewind your lights as the plug end is typically first, you’ll want to cast on with the “free” end. I wind my lights around a can or spare spool.
Make sure to work on the body of the needles, not on the tip... i.e. when you work a stitch wrap the wire around the full circumference of the needle. If you work it on the tip of the needle, your stitches will be way too tight to work into. Wire is NOT elastic!
Gently pull your work downward at the end of each row, opening up the stitches. I find this helps me to see the shape forming and makes it easier to knit into the stitches on the following row.
Try to avoid kinking your wire... before starting a new row, I release a good length of wire from the coil and prep it by laying it out. This extra step avoids any twists and kinks!

Display in your windows to delight your neighbors as they drive by.
Top your Christmas tree with your Starry Light, mixing it with traditional ornaments for a magical and festive look.
Hang on your walls throughout your home. I have a Love and Light hanging over our bed… it is the BEST night light!
Display your star or orb on your holiday table like a centerpiece.
Decorate your fireplace mantel with your knitted LED lights.

Let’s Make The Bag: Easy Step-by-Step Instructions

Ready to get started? Let’s make your DIY furoshiki-style bag:

Wash your fabric – Start with fresh, clean fabric.
Iron your fabric — Don’t skip this step!
Cut it into a square – The length of your fabric will dictate the square size, you want it to be at least 36 inches [90 cm] square.
Finish the edges – Turn the edges under once with a half-inch seam allowance, adhere fuse-able interfacing to that folded edge, and fold once more ironing well, or you can fold twice and sew this edge down.

During our N Club unboxing live video, I walked members through these steps with a little more detail, it was so much fun!

Once your fabric square is prepped check out this detailed video tutorial here — this will guide you through the final steps, like folding the fabric and attaching the leather handle to complete your furoshiki-style bag.

Stitching The Unknown: What is a Mystery Knit Along (MKAL)?

What is a Mystery KAL?

An MKAL is a knit-along where a knitting pattern is broken down into “clues.” Each clue tells you exactly what to knit BUT (here’s where the mystery part comes in…) you have no idea about the specifics of the project. There are no photos and no hints to clue you into what you're making. Whether you’re knitting a sleeve, a toe, or the crotch of your new favorite thong - it’s a MYSTERY, see what I mean?!

Most MKAL clues are released one at a time and on a predetermined schedule, so you always know when they’re coming.

An MKAL with Meeee (and Lola)

When I host MKALS, the design is always a brand-new, never-before-seen pattern, and you can count on it being innovative and amusing! Since I keep my lips sealed about the details of the design, a big part of the fun is trying to guess what your knitting will turn into. (Hint: if you look at my past MKALs, you can see they are always one-size accessories, like cowls, scarves, or shawls). I keep the construction unique as part of the guessing game!

After signing up, you can join my Ravelry group AND/OR Facebook group. We've got a great community of knitters around the world, and everyone LOVES to knit together! Each time a clue is released, you will receive an email with a link to the updated PDF - just a piece, though, not the full pattern! With each release, new threads will be set up in my Ravelry and Facebook groups to support and encourage you all. We will all be knitting on the same schedule, and everyone will end up with a fabulous project.

I always provide loads of video support and written instructions so you can follow along with the rest of the group and learn new techniques. You can purchase a kit to use the same materials as the rest of the group or choose to go stash diving.

What I Love About Mystery KALs

Oftentimes, as knitters, we see a photo of a project and get overwhelmed by its intricacy. We decide that our knitting skills are not up to the task. Even if we are perfectly capable, we tell ourselves we aren't.

With Mystery knit-a-longs, we banish that fear! There’s no intimidating photo, no big scary pattern, only bite-sized instructions that you follow word for word.

The result?

Many knitters are surprised by their own abilities! They gain an incredible amount of confidence through this process - in such a fun way! Once they start knitting, they find out what they (and their needles) are really capable of. The mystery allows us to really let go, drop some inhibitions and expectations, and just knit.

The project may be a mystery, but the fun is truly obvious!

Into The Hoods MKAL 2025

Into the Hoods was our Fall ‘25 mystery knit-a-long that offered a whopping six hooded patterns in one knitting adventure! Over each of the four clues, knitters worked through the suspense of creating a hood without knowing exactly where the trail would lead. Each knitter chose their own path—picking between the Balaclava, Dickey, or Scarf style, and deciding whether to work in a single color or two coordinating colors. That's six different options, all from one knit along!

Tutorial: The Making of a Magic Ball (with Magic Knots!)

Have you ever heard of a magic ball? No, it's not something a magician uses in their act – it's actually a ball of yarn that is like a little bundle of knitting wizardry!

How, you ask?

Well, let me tell you. Inside this sweet little sphere, multiple yarns are connected with what can only be described as magical knots. Yes, you heard me right – magic knots! If you aren’t a lover of weaving in ends, this magic knot has your name written all over it!

All you do is wind your yarn into a ball, when it is time to connect your next skein you'll tie it to the previous skein with a magic knot and then keep winding... you can do this with two skeins, or with five!

I have perfected the art of using magic balls in my designs. And let me tell you, once you go balls, you never go back! I've created both written and video tutorials to show you how to make magic knots so you can wind your yarn into magic balls like a pro.

Photo Tutorial:

Step 1: Choose Your Yarn! You'll want to use a yarn that isn't too slippery... making a knot and testing it will let you know if your chosen yarn will work with this technique!

Step 2: Lay down the two ends you want to join with the tails going in opposite directions.
Step 3: Take one end and go underneath the other end to the opposite side.
Step 4: Then bring that end back over and lay it across itself.
Step 5: Then take that end and go inside the loop you have created to make an overhand knot.
Step 6: Pull tight.
Step 7: Repeat with the other tail.



Step 8: Hold onto the working yarn, and start to pull in opposite directions.
Step 9: Keep pulling, the two knots will slide together.
Step 10: Pull all the way tight!
Step 11: Trim the ends VERY close to the knot, sharp scissors help!
Step 12: Test your knot by yanking on it HARD! If you do not follow these steps exactly the knot will pop apart!

The Right Projects for a Magic Knot

I want to make a note that this knot is not perfect for every yarn and you should definitely test it with your yarn before you commit to it. It might not work well with single-ply yarn, slipper yarns (like those with a high silk content), and cellulose-based fibers (like cotton, rayon, and Tencel).

You can put a bit of Fabric Fusion on the knot which will ensure it won’t fail... but do a test first to be sure. Sometimes it can change the color or hand of your fiber. Your other choice for joining the ends is to use a Russian Join, which will work on wool fibers but not the other fibers listed above… I really need to make a video on this soon!

Using the magic knot to join yarn has become my go-to when designing projects that use mini-skeins. Check out Lolette, Da Light, or Da Luxe, those are all projects where I made a magic ball with mini-skeins before I started knitting! This is easier for me than weaving in ends when my knitting is complete. I even used it on my Dalight Scarf and Cowl MKAL with great success!

Oh, Aquifer and Brioche Bandido, use the magic knots too. So easy and addictive, once your hands get the hang of it you are going to be using them all the time!! No more worrying about my yarn coming undone or having to weave in those ends constantly. Enjoy my favorite yarn-joining technique! Who knew a little knot could make such a big difference?

The story of Lola

Everyone needs a fun excuse to be a little wacky, a bit sassy, or perhaps a tad eccentric. When things go awry, I suggest you blame it on your alter ego; everyone should have one. And that's where Lola comes in for me- she’s my alter-ego.

Allow me to share her story…

The Birth of Lola

Lola isn’t just your typical alter ego. She didn't burst forth from my imagination in a single moment of inspiration. Instead, she evolved gradually, stitch by stitch, giggle by giggle, and emerged with (more than) a touch of sarcasm.

It all began back in my college days. My friends would say they knew that when I let my hair down it was going to be a wild night. That's when Lola's spirit was born, this new side of me, although she didn't have a name just yet.

One fateful evening, I leaned down and gave a goodnight kiss to my friend's young son before heading out to paint the town red. He couldn't quite pronounce "Laura," and in his adorable attempt, he affectionately dubbed me Lola.

Lola is a character who's a little quirky, exceedingly spontaneous, and hilarious. Now, you might be wondering what sets Lola apart from Laura. Well, Lola has a particular fondness for thongs. Yes, you read that right – I'm talking about the underwear. But how did this unusual obsession begin? To be honest, I don’t even know myself where this began, maybe Kinetik Mystery KAL?

What I do know, is that Lola loves all things naughty and never misses the opportunity for a double entendre.

I initially had a club full of hefty projects (The N Club, formally known as The M Club), but I felt the urge to create a kit that was more whimsical and full of bite-size fun. And that's when Lola chimed in, declaring that she was taking over. Lola's Choice Club was born, offering a cute-as-heck knitting experience curated by Lola herself.

Lola isn't just a persona; she's an invitation to let go and laugh (sometimes til you pee a little). I-Cord Knit Tool: Everything You Need To Know

Let's rewind to last November. It’s a Friday night, I'm cozied up on the couch with a glass of wine in hand, knit-flixing while mindlessly scrolling on my phone. Suddenly a video pops up featuring someone’s hands wielding an intriguing tool I had never seen before. Cue the gasp heard 'round the living room! I just had to find out what the deal was with this mystery gizmo.

Lo and behold, it was an I-Cord tool! Here’s the original video that got me hooked (pardon the pun).

With my curiosity piqued, I shared it, asking if anyone knew what it was called, or where I could get one. Naturally, I had to get my hands on every single one of them to see what all the fuss was about.

Fast forward two weeks, and there I was, surrounded by a growing collection of I-Cord makers. Being the DIY enthusiast that I am, I couldn't resist the urge to make one myself. So, this winter armed with polymer clay, latch hooks, and a trusty pair of bolt cutters, I created my very own I-Cord tool.

So, what is I-Cord?

Let me tell you about what this nifty little tool makes: I-Cord! Ta-da!!

But what is I-Cord?

It's a round knit tube that can be made with as few as 2 stitches. You can use knitting needles, a spool, a loom, or a crochet hook tool to make it. But if you want to speed up the process, I highly recommend getting (or making!) an I-Cord maker. This handy little gadget is like a miniature knitting machine. In fact, it is made with knitting machine needles!

How do you use an I-Cord tool?

Just grab your yarn and let the I-Cord knitter do its magic. With an ergonomic handle, designed to be comfortable to hold for long periods, this tool is the perfect support for your knitting projects. This video shows you how to cast on, work with the tool, bind off, AND fix mistakes!

And then time to roll up your sleeves and get creating Tapas at The Cooking Clubhouse! The in-house professional Chef will guide you step by step through some of Spain’s most iconic tapas recipes keeping our wine glasses full all the while!

Day 3: 11 November 2024 WOOLDREAMERS AND DON QUIXOTE COUNTRY

Day 4: 12 November 2024 MONASTERIO De PIEDRA

Time for a break from the city! 800 years of sanctuary echo around this idyllic location on the Piedra River. The former monastery and parklands allow you to enjoy nature in its purest form as spectacular waterfalls guide you through this dream location. Enjoy an exciting class with Laura where she’ll teach you the tips and tricks of our trip design (in Wooldreamers, of course) before lunch and a guided hike and exploration of our incredible surroundings. Day 5: 13 November 2024 THE ROAD TO BARCELONA!

Today we gently meander towards Barcelona. First, we take a quick stop in Zaragoza, with two majestic cathedrals, a fortified Islamic palace in the city centre, monumental remains of the Roman Caesar Augusta, Renaissance-style palace houses, unique treasures of the work of Francisco de Goya, emblems of modern architecture and one of the most diverse gastronomic scenes in Spain. Continue towards Barcelona, stopping to admire the views and enjoy a local lunch. Check into our city centre hotel and relax before dinner.

Day 6: 14 November 2024 GAUDI AND ESPADRILLES!

After breakfast, we take a guided tour of the most recognizable of all of Barcelona’s architecture - La Sagrada Família. It's a giant Basilica that has been under construction since 1882 and it's not expected to be completed for some time yet. This afternoon, discover the best of Barcelona, touring at your own pace using your Hop on Hop off voucher on the official sightseeing bus. In the late afternoon, we’ll be crafting espadrilles in an artisanal workshop in the Gothic quarter of Barcelona with The Espadrilles Experience. This evening, we go to Gaudi’s masterpiece, La Pedrera!

Day 7: 15 November 2024 MONTSERRAT, YARN, AND FLAMENCO

After breakfast, we take a scenic train and cable car to Montserrat - a beautiful Benedictine monk mountain retreat northwest of Barcelona city. In the Montserrat Monastery Museum, you can see works by important artists such as Dalí, El Greco, Monet, and Giordano. After a leisurely lunch, visit Lalanalu yarn shop to meet the hosts of Barcelona Knits and receive your event wristband. This evening we visit El Tablao De Carmen, for flamenco and dinner!!! Olé!

Day 8: 16 November 2024 BARCELONA KNITS!

Join your coach after breakfast and travel the short distance to the BARCELONA KNITS FESTIVAL on the Barcelona waterfront, overlooking the Balearic Sea. You have the chance to book a class as a part of our package and of course any additional classes you are welcome to book and pay yourself. Enjoy the many activities going on throughout the day and make the most of all the stalls! The remainder of the day and evening is free for you to explore, or you can just take our shuttle back to the hotel for a bit of knitting and relaxation! This evening there will be a fun dinner, knitting, and entertainment event!

Day 9: 17 November 2024 BARCELONA KNITS DAY 2!

After a leisurely Sunday breakfast, you may join your shuttle for a return to the water’s edge and BARCELONA KNITS! More of the same wonderful learning, shopping, and socializing in the fun and lively festival! This afternoon return to your hotel for an exclusive knitting class with Carol Feller of Stolen Stitches! This evening join us for a Sangria Masterclass in our hotel and an evening knitting circle before dinner.

September 21st to 30th, 2024

Have you ever dreamt of a place so enchanting that leaving seems unfathomable? Each time I set foot on the Aran Islands, I'm overcome with the desire to stay there forever. And I'm not alone. Every group I've had the privilege of bringing with me to this beautiful place feels the same—wanting more. So, why not indulge in the luxury of time and immerse ourselves in these magical isles? We’ll fly into Dublin, and be whisked to the west side of Ireland where we’ll stay at the glorious 5-star Dromoland Castle to get to know each other and start our trip in style. I’ve planned a guided hike and a visit with a natural dyer in the Burren, along with an afternoon to explore Ennis (what I like to think of as the Ithaca of Ireland). Then we’ll ferry to Inis Mor, where we’ll have 5 days and 4 nights to explore the Aran Islands. We’ll have knitting lessons, hiking, meditation, cheese, and sheep experiences, all led by locals who are gracious enough to share their island way of life with us.

Unlike some of my other more location-jumping knitting trips, this experience is for those looking to slow down and ground themselves. We will be taking deep breaths of Irish air and embracing the magic of Ireland together all while sharing our common passion, KNITTING!

And, if you feel the desire to explore Ireland a bit more, there is the option to extend the trip by 3 nights and head south to Killarney, where we’ll visit Kerry Woolen Mills (so I can get fabric for another wool coat), and explore the Dunloe Gap. A little birdie told me there is an Irish dance competition "on" that weekend, so the evenings are left open to wander the town. Finally, on our way back to Dublin we’ll stop in Cork to have a class and visit with Carol Feller.

Day 1: Saturday 21st September 2024

Arrive at the Dublin Airport and meet with your Irish driver and tour guide who will start your journey south through the lush green fields of the Irish midlands. You’ll visit the wonderful Irish Stud and Japanese Gardens on your way to check in to the luxurious 5-star Dromoland Castle Hotel in County Clare. We’ll end the day with a group welcome dinner and trip design reveal in the Terrace Room.

Day 2: Sunday 22nd September 2024

After a relaxing morning exploring the castle grounds and facilities, we’ll head north towards the seaside village community of Fanore. Enjoy an explorative walking tour with Tony Kirby (author of The Book on Exploring Aran Islands on Foot) in the Burren. We’ll witness botanical beauty, spectacular views, and prehistoric monuments. Next, it’s onto the town of Ennis where you will have some free time to explore and enjoy a bite to eat at your own pace. There will be time to indulge in some of the local eateries in search of dinner this evening before returning to the hotel.

Day 3: Monday 23rd September 2024

Saying our farewells to the castle, we’ll board the bus and journey to meet with Sophie Fontaine from Sionnach Yarns. Enjoy an informal chat about her yarns and dyeing processes before shopping her glorious yarns. Next, enjoy lunch at Homestead Cottage which uses the freshest of produce on its menu. In the afternoon, board the ferry for your crossing to Inis Mor, the largest of the three Aran Islands. On arrival, enjoy a ‘Meet and Greet’ with your island host, Una McDonagh who will introduce you to the island before taking some time to explore at your own pace. This evening, we’ll have a scrumptious dinner at our hotel.

Day 4: Tuesday 24th September 2024

This morning, enjoy a Knitting Workshop with Una, a born and bred island instructor who comes from a long tradition of knitters and craftspeople, and start a project that can be undertaken at different intervals over the coming days. After lunch, we have an Island Tour to visit some of the key highlights of the Island including Dun Aonghasa at the summit of Kilmurvey village, the seal colony, and seven churches along with other focal points on the island. Dinner will be at the hotel this evening followed by an Irish dancing workshop! WAHOO! Watch out for Lola’s dance moves, they are special.

Day 5: Wednesday 25th September 2024

Today, board a ferry to Inis Oirr, the smallest of the Aran Islands. On arrival, enjoy an island presentation along with tea, coffee, and homemade scones at Una’s Cafe before departing on a tour of the island. While on the island, enjoy a Spinning & Dyeing Workshop before eating lunch and touring the island with Una who resides on the island permanently. In the afternoon, board a ferry back to Inis Mor where you will have time to nap and knit before dinner.

Day 6: Thursday 26th September 2024

This morning, enjoy a retreat-style event with local, Deirdre Ni Chinneide. She will draw from the journey of the Celtic Passage offering an invitation to experience the healing power of yoga, meditation, and music. Then we’ll take a reflective walk before tea/coffee and a delicious lunch! In the afternoon, pay a visit to Gabriel at Aran Islands Goats Cheese who will give you a tour of his farm and small production plant along with a tasting of his creamy produce! Next, it’s onto Mairtin O Flaithearta who runs his own aran sheep farm before heading back to your hotel for dinner. YUM DINNER!

Day 7: Friday 27th September 2024

After breakfast, take a ferry back to the mainland. For those wishing to depart the trip at this point, you can transfer to Dublin by rail from the town of Ennis or Limerick. For all wishing to remain on the tour, journey south towards Killarney, a town that is set amidst sublime scenery. We’ll visit Kerry Woollen Mills a 17th-century establishment that has been crafting fine fabrics and yarn from wool for over 300 years. There will also be time allocated for some shopping before heading onward to your hotel for check-in and dinner together.

Day 8: Saturday 28th September 2024

Today, enjoy a Gap of Dunloe excursion. We’ll begin at Kate Kearney’s Cottage by taking a pony and trap through the Gap of Dunloe where you can view a spectacular glaciated valley. Your pony and trap ride ends at Lord Brandon’s Cottage where you can enjoy food and beverages. The next part of your journey takes you through the three Lakes of Killarney passing by the majestic oak woods of Derrycunnihy and Tomies mountains, Your journey ends at the wonderfully restored 15th-century Ross Castle. We will have an option for those who want to walk the Gap to do that instead. Return to your hotel where the remainder of the day is free to explore the bars and restaurants of Killarney at your leisure.

Day 9: Sunday 29th September 2024

This morning, board your coach and begin your return journey to Dublin. Travel west to Cork, home of Stolen Stitches and knitwear designer, Carol Feller! Enjoy an exclusive workshop with Carol who has traveled the world teaching in yarn shops and fibre festivals. Lunch will be included here before beginning your journey north towards County Kildare. Upon arrival at the luxurious Carton House, take some time to relax before we enjoy a farewell dinner at the property’s award-winning restaurant.

Day 10: Monday 30th September 2024

Transfer to Dublin Airport for your return journey. WAH!

Prepare to board the Holland America Oosterdam, as we set sail on A DREAM CRUISE from Buenos Aires, Argentina around the southern tip of South America to Santiago Chile.

Can you hear our needles clicking in sync with the ocean? Do you feel your fingers itching to knit up a storm while we cruise through the Beadle Channel, along Cape Horn, and amidst the Chilean Fjords? Well, folks, this is the knitting cruise we've been waiting for! I’ve never been to South America, and I want to go with you! I'm particularly excited for The Falkland Islands and Lola wants to tango with you in Buenos Aires!

March is an excellent time to explore these lands. The days are long, the sun warm, and the weather at home is not all that!

But this cruise isn’t just about knitting – it's about exploring too! Penguins, sheep, birds, glaciers, fjords OH MY!

I’m cooking up a special concept for this trip… I’ll be designing a project for the cruise AND so will you! Classes on this cruise will incorporate knitting techniques along with creativity workshops and DESIGN skills. By the end of the two weeks, you will have your OWN memorable knit design on your needles. This cruise allows for us to do plenty of time to do design exploration. From Stitches to Meals: How the 2023 Knit for Food Knit-A-Thon Changed Lives

As I reflect on 2023, there is one thing that I am the most proud of:
The third annual Knit for Food Knit-a-thon... we raised $340,000!

It was a roaring success, raising more dough than a freshly baked loaf of bread! I don't know about you, but I'm feeling all warm and fuzzy inside - and it's not just because of this cozy knit sweater I’ve got on.

So, grab your needles and get ready to celebrate with this recap, because 2023’s Knit-a-thon on March 26th was a hit! And before we get started, mark your calendars for Saturday, March 23rd, 2024. The date has been set for the next Knit-a-thon event.

How much did we raise in 2023?

We set a goal of $272,000 to support our cause, and thanks to the generosity of our community, we were able to raise our funds and exceed that figure by a substantial margin. We are thrilled to announce that we have raised a total of $340,000 - an impressive 125% of our target.

In 2022, we raised over $271,000 and in 2021 we raised over $265,000. I know I speak for everyone when I say I can't wait to see how much we can raise together in 2024. Make sure to mark your calendars for March 23rd, 2024!

How many people were knitting?

More than 640 knitters were registered, but we know that the actual number of participants was much higher. There were multiple group meet-ups held throughout the country at LYS’s, at churches, in community centers, and in my living room.

87 knitters raised over $1000,
And 21 knitters raised over $2,000!!!

Let's talk about donations!

There were 7,222 unique donations made to the 2023 Knit for Food Knit-a-thon. What an incredible number!

412 of these donations were for $5,
4,074 of these donations were for $25 and under,
And 5,861 of these donations were for $50 and under!

The power of a fundraising event lies in the way individuals come together and bring in their wider community. This is particularly true of Knit for Food as knitters are known for their generous spirit. I know I speak for everyone when I shout a big THANK YOU to the communities that pitched in and helped us raise funds.

Where does the money go?

The money we raised goes to four different organizations that work tirelessly to address hunger and food insecurity in the USA. They understand that many go to bed hungry and have made it their mission to provide nutritious meals throughout the year.

Feeding America is a non-profit organization that has over 200 food banks and 60,000 pantries and meal programs. It helps to provide meals to millions of families and individuals who struggle with hunger in the United States. The organization also advocates for policies that can help to alleviate hunger and poverty. Through its network, Feeding America has provided over 4 billion meals yearly to people facing hunger.
World Central Kitchen is a non-profit organization that works tirelessly to provide healthy meals to communities impacted by natural disasters all around the world. Founded by Chef José Andrés, this organization has helped to feed thousands of people in times of need, using food as a means of providing comfort and sustenance. Through a network of local chefs and volunteers, they are able to prepare and distribute hot meals quickly and efficiently. Present in over 30 countries, World Central Kitchen operates on the principle that a hot meal can make a huge difference in times of distress.
No Kid Hungry is a nonprofit organization in the United States that aims to end childhood hunger. They work towards this goal by providing meals for children in need, educating families on how to cook healthy meals on a budget, and advocating for policy changes to address the root causes of hunger. They have over 30 years of experience addressing childhood hunger and have served millions of meals to children. Their programs help connect families with free meals, nutrition education, and equipment to prepare healthy meals at home.
Meals on Wheels is a non-profit organization that delivers freshly-prepared, nutritious meals to elderly and disabled individuals who may have limited access to healthy food options. The program serves as a lifeline for many seniors who live alone, have mobility issues, or are unable to prepare food on their own. The team of volunteer drivers delivers meals to clients' homes, providing not only sustenance but also much-needed social interactions. The program has been instrumental in improving the quality of life of many elderly and disabled individuals, helping them maintain their independence and live in their homes for longer. Meals on Wheels is a vital service for many communities, ensuring that the elderly and disabled are not left hungry or isolated.

How many meals did we provide?

It's a heartwarming and inspiring thought: $1 in donations can provide up to 10 meals for people in need. And the generosity of those who donated to our fundraising efforts was remarkable, totaling $340,000.

That means we will be able to provide a staggering 3,400,000 meals to those who need them most.

We are immensely grateful to everyone who contributed to this important cause, and we look forward to continuing to serve our communities with compassion and generosity.

Highlights from the knit-a-thon!

Highlight #1 — Education

All four organizations sent reps to educate and inform our attendees via Zoom. From sharing staggering statistics about the number of people who are affected by food insecurity, to highlighting the work they do to address it, these experts left no stone unturned in imparting knowledge and encouraging action. They helped us all understand the gravity of the situation and the urgent need for us to work together to create a sustainable solution.

Highlight #2 — Wellness

We took care of our bodies under careful (and fun) instruction. Soooooo important when doing a 12-hour knitting marathon.

We were lucky enough to have Carson Demers share his knitting ergonomics techniques with us — essential for keeping our bodies comfortable, and productive, and preventing any injury. He provided everyone with lessons that will be beneficial for the rest of our knitting careers.

We also practiced knitting yoga with Mary Ann Gebhardt and Stretches for Stichers with Mara Smith! We did exercises like wrist rotations and shoulder shrugs, stretched our limbs and muscles, improved our posture, and relaxed our bodies.

Highlight #3 — Music

GG and The Grocery Girls put together a stitch-perfect playlist and we had a knitting dance party. It was a great way to take a break from our knitting (though some of us knit while we danced) and have some grooves together!!!

We laughed, we shimmied, and we dropped it low!

Highlight #4 — Games

We were fortunate enough to have my dear friend Patty Lyons as our host for a few knitting-themed competitions. With her impeccable game-master skills, she led us through several rounds of Jeopardy and the Match Game.

Jeopardy had questions from categories like Where in the World, Knitters Grab Bag, Famous Knitters, and Infamous Knits. One category was LOLA fun facts — and every answer was thong!!!!! I did NOT see that coming (or maybe I did since I wrote that one). In Match Game, we were in stitches over each person's unique buzzer noises!

Patty's warm and outgoing personality brought everyone together, creating a fun atmosphere that encouraged camaraderie and competition. Her enthusiasm was infectious and it was impossible not to feel energized by her presence. Everyone had a blast participating and sharing their love for the craft. A big THANK YOU to her for making this portion of the event so memorable — her expertise, energy, and passion made for a competition we won't soon forget.

Lola's Spicy Chocolate Salami: A Sweet Surprise

LOLA LOVES A GOOD SALAMI! Lola must have been slightly tipsy when she decided to play Willy Wonka with this classic dessert because her chocolate salami breaks the mold. However, one bite will have you begging for more!

Made with dark chocolate, butter, rum, ginger, cookies, and nuts, this unexpected salami is a conversation piece that will surprise and delight your guests.

These fun ingredients mesh together in harmony, creating an indulgent dessert. Serve on a slice of sweet bread, cookie, or on its own, each round of this irresistible spicy salami will melt in your mouth.

I can't wait for you to give Lola's recipe a try and see for yourself how unbelievably tasty spicy chocolate salami is! Let's get to the easy steps for making this awesome dessert yourself!

Salami

7 oz dark chocolate (I used 72%), chopped
5 oz butter, room temperature
1/2 cup sugar
4 tablespoons milk
1 tablespoon rum or whiskey, optional
2 tablespoons powdered sugar, for rolling

Mix-Ins

10 oz ginger snaps (or other hard biscuit), broken into chunks
2 oz dried cherries (or other dried fruit), chopped
2 oz pistachios (or other nut), chopped
2 oz crystallized ginger, chopped

Instructions

With an electric mixer, whip the softened butter with the sugar until pale and flooffy, about 3 minutes.
Melt the chocolate in the microwave. I heat on low in a glass bowl for 30-second increments, stirring in between. Allow to cool.
Whisk cooled chocolate into butter/sugar mixture with milk and rum if using on low
Add the cookie, nuts, and fruit, and stir by hand to combine.
Roll out a sheet of parchment paper and place the mixture in a long line at the center. Use your hands to shape it into a log. Then roll it up in the paper and twist the endsRefrigerate for at least 3 - 4 hours, then unwrap and roll in powdered sugar.

Serve by placing it on a board surrounded by fruit and sweet breads!

Creating the Perfect Bead Mix for your Knits

Let’s unravel the magic of bead mixes, explore their beady beauty, and showcase some bead-iful projects that will leave you inspired to create your own sparkling masterpieces!

Crafting the Perfect Bead Mix

First things first, let's figure out what a bead mix is all about. In short, a bead mix is a combination of beads, curated to complement each other and add a touch of pizzazz to a knitted piece.

Let me walk you through my process and show you the art of mixing beads! My favorite bead mixes contain Japanese seed beads, a blend of Miyuki, Matsuno, and Toho, and are a mixture of about 75% Size 6, 20% Size 8 Delica, and 5% Size 8!

Size 8 Delica beads have about 32 beads/gram, Size 8 beads have 40 beads/gr, and Size 6 beads have 12 beads/gram. Size 6 and 8 seed beads are round, and the Delica beads are perfect little cylinders.I use bead mixes mostly on fingering weight yarn. If I use just Size 6 beads things get heavy way too quickly (I like to keep my bead weight WAY less than the project’s yarn weight). And if I use Size 8 beads they get lost. So, making a mix cuts down on the overall weight of the beads AND ensures that the beads aren't lost in your knit fabric.

As for color? I’m drawn to beads that sparkle and shine but are a similar color to my yarn… so I’ll find beads in the same color family as my project, but make sure they have an AB finish (aurora borealis), or a silver lining, or maybe a metallic finish if I’m feeling extra fancy!

One thing to be careful of is transparent beads that don’t have a lining… when you thread your yarn through them the color of the bead will change to the color of your yarn and they will get all kinds of lost. Looking to purchase beads for knitting?

The Bling Stitch Technique

Now that I've talked about making a bead mix, it's time to break down working those beads into your knitting. Beads are for more than just bracelets, people!

Okay, my favorite way to add beads to your knitting doesn't exactly have a name, but I call it the "Bling Stitch." This method plays with sliding up prestrung beads as you knit. Instead of placing the beads onto your stitches with a crochet hook, the beads are prestrung onto the yarn before you begin to knit. As you work, you slip up the prestrung beads and incorporate them into your stitches

To incorporate prestrung beads as you knit, follow these steps:

String the beads: Before starting your project, string the beads onto your yarn randomly. You can use a large eye-beading needle or dental floss threader. I have a video just for this!
Start knitting: Begin by casting on the number of stitches your pattern calls for
Beading: When you come to a stitch where you want to place a bead, slip up the prestrung bead on your working yarn, knit or purl your stitch so that the bead is sitting up on your ndl.
Placement: When you come to this bead on the next row you will slide it onto the right or left leg of the stitch and then work the stitch as written in your pattern.

Two hot tips:

Remember to maintain tension on the yarn while slipping up the beads to ensure they sit snugly on the knit stitches.
Choose beads with an opening that is large enough to fit the yarn comfortably. See this blog post for help with yarn weight to bead size!

Lolember's Past and Future: Last Year and What’s To Come

Last year, was a December like no other with Lolember, my alter-ego Lola's first annual countdown calendar. It was a month filled with goodies, hilarity, surprises, and a bunch of knitting.

AND HERE WE ARE: Signups are now open for year #2!

I’m sure some of you are still like, “...what are we talking about here??” So I’ve compiled a little recap of last year along with some exciting new developments and some staples that are staying the same. Read on for all the info!

The first year of Lolember

Last year's LOLEMBER package was chock full of knitting goodies and surprises. We kicked things off with not just one, but two fabulous knitting patterns for download — a simpler version (Da Light) and a more complex one (Da Luxe).

Some folks dove into their stash at home and others treated themselves to an Emma's Yarn 25-day Smallidays mini-skein set. (I just saw a sneak peek of 2023's gradient and it is FIRE!)

Each day, we opened a new package— stitch markers, end stoppers, knitting tools, locally made soap, treats, a whimsical thong cookie cutter, and dang-tasty recipes for rum balls and ginger snaps.

To top it all off, all 25 envelopes were wrapped up in a bespoke organic cotton dishcloth, hand-printed by an Ithaca artisan.

Patterns: This year's Lolember will deliver an exclusive pattern specifically designed for a mini-skein advent calendar. The pattern will be available for download on December 1st!
Emma’s Yarn Smallidays Set: I’m psyched to be designing with Emma's Yarn again this year. I got a sneak peek of Emma’s 2023 palette and Lola and I are in love. The set is available in both DK and Fingering weights, so you can choose the yarn weight that suits your knitting preferences. I have a limited number of yarn sets available, and those must be purchased by July 31st. You can certainly go stash diving or use another advent yarn set… it was a blast to see what people did last year!
Shipping by mid-November: All packages will be shipped by mid-November, giving you ample time to prepare and open your goodies starting on December 1st. You WILL have your Lolember package in hand before the festivities begin.

Things that will CHANGE

21 Days: This year, Lolember will be a 21-day countdown calendar, instead of 25 days. Lola has a plan and I needed to give her the space to SHINE!
Cohesion: I’m making this experience even more cohesive and immersive this time around. There will be multi-day “themes”. For example, last year, Day 6 had a handmade bar of soap (with an alpaca end stopper inside), followed by a skein of cotton yarn, and finally, the Da Tong dishcloth pattern. This year, we're taking that concept to a whole new level!
Something beaded: There will be a fun beaded project designed to be a perfect gift (or to keep for yourself). While I won't spoil the surprise by revealing exactly what it is, I can assure you that it will be an instant classic.

What will be in the box this year?

This year's countdown calendar DESIGN: I'm designing with an Emma's Yarn Smalliday Set again, and there will be one EPIC design with it. Purchasing a Smalliday Set from me is optional, you can also go stash diving... but know that Smalliday Sets are only available through pre-order, you won't be able to change your mind and get one later. The deadline for ordering them is July 31st!
VIDEO TUTORIAL: This year's Lolember design(s) will include one of my long form pattern tutorials... prepare to learn and have your needles be highly amused!
WRAPPING: I loved the sustainability of last year's wrapping... no one needs to spend money on a fancy box they are never going to use again. So get ready for a functional wrap for your goodies!
ZOOM PARTIES: Lol-members will have a unboxing/reveal party on Nov 30th where I'll show you what we are knitting together during Lolember! Then we'll have a wrap-up Zoom on the 21st to celebrate the darkest day of the year with our knitting.
21 GOODIES: Some of these will be notions needed for the EPIC design, some will be for your knitting in general, one or two will be smaller bite sized patterns, beads, findings, a recipe, let's just say I've had a WHOLE year to plan...

The thong joke is so 2022! I’m thinking….beaded pasties, cause who doesn’t need a pair of those? Or maybe a nutritional pair of edible undies, something sensible like that.
