NFL owners reportedly pushing for 18 game seasons

The NFL is currently discussing a proposed shift to an 18-game regular season but it has not been officially approved. This change would require an agreement with the NFL Players Association (NFLPA), and it is not expected to be implemented before the current Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) expires after the 2030 season. The current season is 17 games long.

NFL owners, including Robert Kraft of the Patriots, are strongly advocating for 18 game seasons to increase revenue. In the proposal, preseason games would be reduced from three to two and there would be a second bye week for each team.

Seasons would extend deeper into February, with the Super Bowl potentially aligning with Presidents Day weekend. The primary obstacle to the 18-game season is the NFLPA's concern over player health and safety. While the league has implemented rule changes and new helmet technology to mitigate injuries, players and the union remain cautious about the increased physical toll of more regular-season games.

The current 2025 NFL season is operating under the 17-game format, with this season's Super Bowl scheduled for February 8th.

The New England Patriots defeated the New York Jets 42-10 yesterday in their Week 17 matchup, a victory which, coupled with a Bills loss, officially clinched the AFC East title for the Patriots, their first since 2019.

The Patriots dominated the game from the start, leading 35-3 at halftime and scoring touchdowns on their first six possessions. Rookie quarterback Drake Maye had a standout performance, throwing a career-high five touchdown passes and finishing with 256 yards before being relieved in the third quarter.

For this week's throwback we take you back to 2002 and Super Bowl XXXVI which saw the underdog New England Patriots, led by young QB Tom Brady, upset the heavily favored St. Louis Rams 20-17, with Adam Vinatieri's 48-yard field goal as time expired securing the Patriots' first-ever Super Bowl title. This kicked off the Patriots dynasty and marked a major upset in NFL history and Brady's coming out party.

Super Bowl 36 also featured Ty Law's pivotal interception which he returned for a touchdown. A late Rams comeback to tie the score proved to be all for naught due to Brady's calm final drive to set up the winning Vinatieri field goal.

The New England Patriots notched a huge road win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday, November 9, 2025, improving to 8-2 with a 28-23 thriller that saw them dominate for 90% of the game before a tense finish. Two main stories emerged from the victory: a phenomenal defensive effort that stifled the Buccaneers’ offense, and rookie running back TreVeyon Henderson's breakout performance with 147 rushing yards and two touchdowns on fourteen carries, filling the void left by multiple running back injuries.

Coming into the game, most expected Drake Maye to go toe-to-toe in a shootout with the Bucs, but that was not the case. Maye played decently (16-of-31 for 270 yards, two touchdowns, and an interception), but the Patriots' defense stepped up massively to dictate the pace. After allowing a touchdown on Tampa's very first possession, the Buccaneers' next offensive drives went punt, punt, punt, field goal, and then it was halftime, with two of those three punting drives being three-and-outs. They failed to score another touchdown until five minutes left in the third quarter.

The Pats defense held the Bucs to 5.6 yards per play, but unfortunately, the Patriots streak of not allowing an opposing rusher to reach fifty rushing yards came to an end as Sean Tucker rushed for fifty-three yards on nine carries. With that being said the Patriots defensive line played well. Outside of a few long rushes, they defended the rush well and sacked Baker Mayfield twice. Cornerback Christian Gonzalez played particularly well. In a tweet by @ByMarkDaniels, of MassLive he shows how dominant Gonzalez has been these past few weeks.

Overall, it was a stellar day for the Pats' defense in containing the Bucs, but rookie running back TreVeyon Henderson truly stole the show. As mentioned, he racked up 147 rushing yards and two touchdowns on just 14 carries, including a 55-yard burst on the second play of the second half to extend the lead and a 69-yard dagger late in the fourth quarter that pushed the score to 28-16. Henderson also excelled in pass protection, not allowing a single pressure across his snaps to keep Drake Maye clean

One of the Patriots biggest issues right now is their inconsistency trying to score in the second half. Yesterday, outside of the two big plays by Henderson, they really struggled to move the ball. Through 10 games, they're averaging just 11.6 points in the second half (17th in the NFL), a drop from their stronger first halves (14.9 points on average). This inconsistency shows up in several outings: they've scored fewer than 10 second-half points in four games (Weeks 1, 3, 5, and 9), and in three of those (Weeks 1, 3, and 5), they managed three or fewer points.

The Patriots' win yesterday was a big deal. With Buffalo falling to Miami, New England now leads the AFC East by 1.5 games at 8-2. This team looks capable of beating anyone in the league, thanks to a stout defense and an offense that's shown flashes of greatness, even if it wasn't at its sharpest against the Bucs. This Thursday, the Pats host the Jets and must capitalize on the short turnaround to keep the momentum rolling.

The New England Patriots beat the Atlanta Falcons and now have a record of 7-2. They lead the AFC East and are the second seed in the AFC. The season’s future looms as the NFL Trade Deadline is tomorrow at 4:00pm EST. Two weeks ago, in the first edition of Patriots Trade Talk, it was discussed that running back and defensive back were two of the biggest needs for the Pats. Fast forward, the running back is certainly still important, but a new need has emerged.

The Patriots need offensive line help. After a strong start to the season in pass protection, the unit has regressed sharply. Cleveland’s Myles Garrett accounted for all six sacks last week, and the Falcons added another six yesterday despite a top-tier pass defense. Regardless, adding another reliable piece up front would be a major upgrade before tomorrow’s deadline.

Ranking the Patriots’ needs is challenging with a 7-2 roster capable of matching up against any AFC opponent. The priority list shapes up as: 1. Offensive line, 2. Running back, 3. Edge rusher. All three positions remain critical for a legitimate playoff push. With fewer than twenty-four hours until the deadline, the next moves will reveal the front office’s final calculus

New England Patriots Extend CB Marcus Jones

The New England Patriots and cornerback Marcus Jones have agreed to a three-year contract extension. While the exact details remain unknown, this is a smart move for a player who has been phenomenal this season. Jones has made big plays in nearly every game and shown leadership both on and off the field.

Marcus Jones' contributions this season cannot be understated. Previously seen as a Matthew Slater-type special teams asset that provided an edge, Jones has emerged as a key nickel package cornerback in 2025. His increased production has enabled the Patriots to rely more on man coverage. Jones has played in seventy-six percent of defensive snaps, has accumulated thirty-six tackles, twenty-six solo tackles, two interceptions, and one sack.

Jones has great instincts, On this play in the slot. He reads the rub route, stays in phase, and breaks up a would-be touchdown against the Saints. Plays like this define his 2025 season.

Patriots Trade Talk: 1st Edition

The NFL trade deadline is Tuesday, November 4th, just ten days away. After Sunday’s win in Tennessee and with Buffalo idle on a bye week, the Patriots still sit atop the AFC East. Even with their young core, this team has shown it can compete, which is exactly why they should be buyers at the deadline.

The Patriots should add a running back at the deadline. Say what you want about the lack of usage for Tre’Veon Henderson, but he actually saw more snaps when Antonio Gibson was still healthy. He’s just not getting the reps everyone expected, and there’s a reason for that. But just because Henderson isn’t being used doesn’t mean the Patriots shouldn’t look to add some insurance at the deadline.

That’s where Dameon Pierce comes in. Antonio Gibson’s season-ending ACL tear has left New England thin in the backfield. Pierce’s rugged, downhill style fits perfectly within the Patriots’ inside-zone and gap-scheme hybrid run game. He’s also a reliable pass protector who can keep quarterback Drake Maye clean.

After flashing early in Houston, Pierce’s workload has steadily declined. The emergence of rookie Woody Marks, a 2025 draft pick, and free agent signing Nick Chubb, has pushed Pierce down the depth chart. He’s been a healthy scratch most weeks, making him expendable for a Texans team drifting toward seller status. The Patriots could likely acquire him for a late Day-3 pick. Pierce remains on an affordable rookie contract through 2025, giving New England low-cost depth and short-term upside at a position of need.

With the return of K’Lavon Chaisson, the Patriots’ biggest need has shifted from defensive line help to adding depth in the secondary. The team has yet to allow a rusher to surpass fifty yards, and Chaisson’s two sacks reignited the pass rush. Adding another edge rusher would certainly help, but depth at defensive back, particularly cornerback, is the greater priority right now.

Marcus Jones has shown flashes of being a reliable option. He made two of the biggest defensive plays in their win at Buffalo and has continued to impact games against New Orleans and Tennessee. Jones could fill that role if needed, but keeping him at nickel corner back makes the most sense given his special teams impact. His greatest value to this team is his versatility and ability to create momentum in multiple phases.

A strong target at cornerback would be Roger McCreary. The inevitability of a fire sale in Tennessee is something New England should try to capitalize on. The Patriots have already found success adding former Titans to their defense, so another move makes sense. McCreary fits what New England looks for in a defensive back: the ability to play inside and outside, press at the line, and disrupt timing routes. He has shown he can handle both slot and perimeter duties and brings the physical, disciplined approach. McCreary would be a short-term rental, a fair criticism, but he fits the profile of the low-risk, high-reward additions New England has historically thrived on.

Lastly, an option that is very unlikely but could provide big impacts are Brian Thomas Jr. This morning NFL insider, Dianna Russini reported that the Jacksonville Jaguars are taking calls on the star wide receiver. Thomas Jr. is considered to be having a down-year by most around the league, he has also been battling a few injuries, most notably to his left wrist. Another thing to consider is that historically receivers who have big years as rookies, usually don't perform as well in their second year. Trading for Thomas Jr, is probably not worth the price that it would cost, but there is no denying that adding him to this offense could provide a spark similar to the way that Stefon Diggs has.

With the trade deadline nearing, the Patriots find themselves in a rare position: a young, competitive roster that’s still in the hunt, yet flexible enough to make calculated upgrades. The team doesn’t need a complete overhaul or a headline-grabbing blockbuster. What it needs are the kinds of smart, measured additions that bolster depth, create competition, and keep the locker room focused on the stretch ahead.Both players embody the type of low-risk, high-reward investment that aligns with New England’s identity: disciplined, affordable, and built to contribute immediately. Neither move would mortgage the future, yet both could meaningfully strengthen the team’s depth and raise its ceiling.

This season, the focus for one of these weekly posts has shifted to awarding game balls, spotlighting standout performances from the New England Patriots' thrilling 42-13 rout of the Carolina Panthers. The team has navigated its share of ups and downs, yet their upward trend, fueled by a revitalized offense averaging 25.5 points per game, has ignited optimism among Pats fans. With production surging from long-dormant position groups like wide receivers, and Josh McDaniels proving a phenomenal addition as offensive coordinator, the excitement is evident. Without further ado, here are three Patriots players earning game balls for their efforts against the Panthers.

The first game ball is awarded to quarterback Drake Maye, whose poise and playmaking drove the New England Patriots’ commanding offensive explosion in their dominant win against the Carolina Panthers. Maye was efficient and decisive, delivering a masterful performance with only two incompletions. The last, but certainly not least, game ball goes to Marcus Jones, whose electrifying special teams play transformed the New England Patriots’ dominant win against the Carolina Panthers. The Panthers scored on their opening drive, and a quick three-and-out by the offense suggested another tough home game. After forcing a punt on Carolina’s second drive, Jones returned it 87-yards for a touchdown, completely shifting the game’s momentum. Three weeks into the season, the Patriots are a coin flip. Which team shows up this week, and in which half? They’ve dropped two of three winnable games, sitting at 1-2. At their best, they flash division contender potential with crisp drives and stout defense. At their worst, they’re a penalty riddled, turnover prone mess, flirting with another top three draft pick. Sloppy play, like missed coverage assignments, penalties, and costly fumbles, has been the common thread in their losses.

As mentioned, inconsistency dogs the Patriots. Take their game against the Raiders: they led 10-7 at halftime, set to build momentum with the ball to start the third quarter. A touchdown or field goal could have set the tone for a new season. Instead, a holding penalty on their first play pinned them at their own 12-yard line. Stefon Diggs and the New England Patriots reportedly agree on a three-year 69 million-dollar contract. First reported by NFL insider Ian Rapoport. Stefon Diggs is coming off an ACL tear that happened in late October, but has received great feedback from the workouts and videos of him in his recovery progress.

All offseason Diggs has been linked to the Patriots, but I never truly thought it would materialize. Especially given that the Patriots were reportedly out on DK Metcalf and Cooper Kupp, due to demanding a large target share. Which I understand. Drake Maye looked promising last year, which feels like an understatement, to be honest, and adding a "diva" receiver could negatively impact that development. Say what you want about Diggs' past antics, but performance is key. If he joins this roster, plays well, and creates for others, this team can flourish. Pop Douglas, Hunter Henry, and Kendrick Bourne will all benefit from a guy like Diggs being on the field. Add in the late-season production with Kayshon Bouttee and it's a massive upgrade in their receiving group, probably the best-looking one since 2019.

It will be interesting to see this unfold. This could be a step in the right direction to having a better draft as well. How does this affect their drafting approach? Are they going to use pick-four on a receiver now? Seems unlikely. I would think they trade back and asses their options around pick 9. The Pats are becoming fun again and don't let anyone downplay making an addition like this. Sure, it could backfire and end miserably, but adding a bonafide star receiver is exciting.

After losing their final game of the 2024-2025 season and ultimatley losing the number one overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, the New England Patriots have fired Jerod Mayo. Mayo coached the Patriots to a 4-13 season in his first year as an NFL Head Coach. Just a few hours after the Pats final game of the season, the Patriots released this statement from owner, Robert Kraft.

The idea of Mayo being fired was mainly floated around by fans after a poor season, but for most of the year, it felt like something that would never materialize. This season had a few bright spots but was littered with bad moments. Even with the poor press conferences from coaches and players, the off-field distractions, and what felt like a scheduled weekly loss, this is a season that should have easily had an overall positive outlook going into the next year solely based on the way that Drake Maye looked. Now, combine that with the production of Christian Gonzalez, Hunter Henry, Pop Douglas, and Kayshon Boutte emerging at the end of the season; it should have been a slam dunk for Pats fans to look forward to the future. However, it wasn’t, and it felt like Mayo was involved in that, whether directly or indirectly, as the reason for the negativity.

It will be very interesting to see who fills the Head Coaching spot. It seems like everyone has their choice already, but I hope the Patriots take their time and actually do a hiring process this time.

It's Impossible to Evaluate this Patriots Team

This is the most bizarre Patriots season in recent memory. It feels like each week is a game of "tug of war," where my patience is the rope and the teams are my sanity and utter confusion, with the final goal being which side can cause me to Google different types of knots and how much weight each knot can hold. It's quite astonishing... and I actually get excited to do it again each week. It's sickening, the hold this franchise has on my mental state should instantly get me qualified for some sort of class-action lawsuit. The worst part of it all is that I can't even place my finger on what the problem is.

If you scroll through social media you will see everyone has a slightly different opinion on what this team's problem is, but are pretty much the same. It's coaching, it's the roster, it's the owner, and all are true to some degree, but I can't quite figure out what the exact answer is.

Jerod Mayo's first year as a head coach has been a dumpster fire. This team is undisciplined. The amount of procedural penalties this team commits is atrocious. That falls on the head coach. Say what you want about Bill Belichick, but these errors didn't happen during his tenure. The Patriots had 13 penalties yesterday, with six of them being before the snap. The false starts and illegal shifts, and the holding penalties are costly for any team, let alone a team that is young and underskilled compared to most teams. These errors fall on the head coach.

Combine the penalties with Mayo's postgame press conferences, and it's a disaster. For example, when it comes to the numerous holding penalties that stalled out multiple drives in a row, while also erasing big plays. I'm not sure if it's a product of poor coaching because they're not prepared, or they're undisciplined, or having linemen on the field who might not even start on college teams. Aside from Mike Owenu, I don't want to see any active linemen on the field next year. I am willing to give David Andrews and Cole Strange a chance once they are healthy, but overall, the line needs to be fixed. Whether that be through free agency or through the draft, there needs to be changes. I am in the camp of passing on the wide receivers, even though I love Tetairoa McMillan. He's incredible, but a guy like Will Campbell changes everything instantly. Drake Maye is a budding superstar, and he needs to be protected. It doesn't matter that McMillan is wide open if the play gets called back or Maye is running for his life.

However, many players on the current roster were on last year's team. Kyle Dugger looks like a shell of himself. Jerod Mayo hasn't gotten a fraction of the production that Belichick got out of Dugger for three years. That's not a good thing. A guy entering his fourth year in the NFL shouldn't be regressing after so many good years. We championed this guy. He was a Division Two player in college and was widely considered a steal even by other teams. It's confusing.

There are also problems with their execution. I said earlier that the postgame press conferences are a disaster. Mayo consistently throws his team under the bus. Earlier this year, he referred to his team as soft, and now he is stating that they simply aren't executing properly. When questioned about the mistakes his team made in yesterday's game, Mayo quickly deflected responsibility and placed the blame on the players, saying, “Look, once those guys cross the white lines, there’s nothing I can do for them.”

What can possibly be made of that? It's easy to blame him for not taking responsibility, and I understand why. You'd probably be right, but what if he is right? To play devil's advocate, it is possible that they prepare a great game plan and the players fail to do their jobs. Yesterday, the Patriots allowed a touchdown to Miami runningback De'von Achane that anyone with feet could have scored on. That might be too generous too, because I've seen some babies crawl pretty fast, and they might've been able to score on that play too. Achane caught a pass in the flat and nobody was within 15 feet of him. That's either not being prepared (coach), not calling a play that accounts for one of the fastest players in the league (coach), or failure to execute (players/roster).

This then goes back to the problem of Robert Kraft's fault, the owner. There isn’t much to critique about Kraft's decisions this offseason. He didn’t spend a lot of money, but this wasn’t expected to be a year for the Patriots to contend, so I understand his approach to some extent. The real accountability for Kraft will come next year. The Patriots have an incredible quarterback, and it’s time to invest in better weapons and protection for him. Additionally, the secondary needs improvement; securing a cornerback to partner with Christian Gonzalez is crucial, as is adding an outside linebacker. If the Patriots fail to make any significant signings again and have the same issues as this year, then Kraft will rightly be viewed as a major problem for the team. Until then, I’m willing to give him a pass.

My biggest point is that the Patriots have more than one issue, so it's best to pump the breaks on passing blame because I'm not sure who deserves it. They all do. This is a bad team with a few exciting players. The penalties need to be figured out. Not during the offseason, but for next week. That's on Mayo. If he has to be the "bad guy" and threaten running, or benching players, he has to do it. The one thing I loved about Bill Belichick is that he would've played Joey Slye at left tackle before he allowed his team the embarrassment that came with the line play yesterday. So figure it out, build on the last few games of the year, and build a team that can be competitive next year.
