Hello all,

As you may know, we've started to use the "Read the Rules" app recently to support us in the battle against spam, advertisement and such. Accepting them is very easy, however if you don't know how to, take a look below. You find below the steps for Mobile, new and old Reddit.

Mobile (official Reddit App)

Click on the round button with three dots in the top right of your screen.
In the submenu click on "Read the rules" at the bottom
Read the rules while scrolling down. Once you reach the "Acknowledgement" section, toggle the button and submit.

On third party apps, it's maybe best to use the process for old reddit in case you don't see this option.

Create a Modmail. Title: "Read The Rules", Message: "Acknowledged." and send it.

This is it, you will then receive a confirmation immediately.

Please report racist ragebait and racist comments

Dear members of our community,

In the past few days, we've seen an increase in both ragebaiting posts and racist comments from users with no prior engagement in the sub, often from those usually commenting in the subs of other countries.

This indicates to us that we are frequently being overrun by users who try to spread their racist, islamophobic messages to our sub.

Racism is against our subreddit rules and it is against Reddit's terms of services. We would like to encourage you to use the report button.

That will put it into our 'modqueue' to have a look - and if you report it for 'hate', it will additionally be sent to the sitewide admins who will frequently take further action.

We rely on your reports, just like every subreddit does. Our team is healthy and works well, but we cannot have an eye on everything. We do have scripts and so on to make our job easier, but sometimes, unacceptable comments go through. Using the report button makes sure that we can prioritize looking at said comment and if it's rulebreaking, helps us remove it quickly.

We remove racist content and ban racist users frequently. The admins remove a bunch of comments breaking site-wide rules too (often in a fashion that deletes them completely, so we cannot easily further moderate them)

We are very hesitant to remove political speech. We only remove rules-breaking comments. The relevant rule is:

General reddiquette applies (i.e. no racism, sexism, personal attacks, or simply put: behave as if you were talking to somebody in person)
Please report posts or comments that do not adhere to these rules; in particular, we will not tolerate harassment or discrimination

I obtained a B permit as a non-EU citizen and here is my story

Hello all,

Historically, there has been a lot of interest here in the probability of obtaining a Swiss work permit (B/L) and the pathway to it. That is understandable, since the process is designed to be very competitive, long, uncertain, and frankly quite unfriendly towards prospective immigrants.

However, I got through it, so I wanted to share my experience and a recent timeline for people who might be in a similar situation.

My starting point: the student B permit

I came to Switzerland in September 2021 after securing a PhD position at a cantonal university. Based on that, I obtained a “study” B permit.

For people who are not familiar with it, at its core it is still a B permit, but it comes with several important limitations:

Since no quota is used and no labor-market test is performed, the permit is valid specifically for studying and not as a regular work permit, even though PhD students usually have an employment contract.
Years spent on a student B permit do not initially count towards the residence period required for an accelerated (“anticipé”) C permit, which can normally be obtained after five years on a B permit if the other requirements, particularly integration requirements, are met. However, if after your studies you obtain a regular B permit with “activité lucrative autorisée” and hold it for at least two years, the previous study years can then count.
Because the student B permit is tied to your studies, it effectively expires when your studies end. This also means you generally cannot simply rely on unemployment insurance after graduation in the way someone with an ordinary work-based permit might.

What happens after graduation?

The usual path is roughly this:

You can apply for a six-month job-search L permit after graduation, provided that you have sufficient financial means and a valid address in Switzerland.
This is NOT a normal work L permit. It allows you to remain in Switzerland and search for employment, but it does not in itself give you unrestricted permission to work.
If you find a suitable position, your employer must apply for a regular work permit on your behalf. You must then wait for the required cantonal approval before starting the job.

In practice, this means that you should have enough money saved to cover the transition period and should not plan around receiving unemployment benefits.

Stories about non-EU nationals receiving unemployment benefits after losing a job usually concern people who were already on a normal work-related permit or another permit allowing employment, such as certain family-reunification permits.

There are also some advantages to the student B permit

It is not all bad.

The initial approval is significantly easier than obtaining a normal work permit. If your university and study programme are legitimate and you satisfy the usual requirements, the process is relatively predictable.
Because you still hold a B permit, family reunification is possible. A spouse may actually end up in a better labour-market position than the PhD student, because they can generally work in Switzerland while your family-reunification conditions continue to be met. There are financial requirements, but a normal first-year Swiss PhD salary is usually sufficient.
Most importantly, Swiss university graduates benefit from an exception when applying for a normal work permit after graduation.

The normal non-EU work-permit problem

For a non-EU citizen who has not graduated from a Swiss university, the procedure normally looks something like this:

You apply for a job and receive an employment contract.
Your prospective employer applies for a work permit on your behalf.
As part of that application, the employer normally has to justify hiring you instead of someone who already has easier access to the Swiss labour market, such as a Swiss/EU citizen or an eligible resident.

This usually involves a labour-market test. The employer may have to:

advertise the position publicly;
consider and interview suitable candidates who already have access to the Swiss labour market;
document why those candidates were not suitable;
explain why you are particularly well suited for the role;
offer a salary and employment conditions consistent with the Swiss market.

The immigration authorities then forward the application to the competent cantonal labour authorities.

If the labour authorities approve it, the immigration authorities can issue the permit. The exact type of permit is ultimately determined by the authorities. For example, having a permanent employment contract (CDI) does not automatically guarantee a B permit; an L permit may still be issued.

The Swiss graduate exception

Swiss university graduates have an important advantage.

Your employer does not necessarily have to perform the normal labour-market test if the position is considered to be of great economic or scientific interest to Switzerland.

This sounds excellent, but there is an important catch: this requirement is deliberately broad and is probably the biggest hurdle in the whole process.

You are therefore NOT suddenly on completely equal footing with Swiss/EU candidates after graduation.

The employer still has to prepare a work-permit application, and the authorities still have to accept that your employment serves a sufficiently important economic or scientific interest.

In practice, I would expect the strength of the employer and the position to matter significantly. A small start-up, for example, may have a much harder time demonstrating this than a large established company or institution such as Roche, Nestlé, a major university, research institute, etc.

This uncertainty and administrative burden is also why many employers are reluctant to consider non-EU candidates even when the Swiss-graduate exception exists.

Another thing I often see online is people linking this exception directly to the six-month job-search L permit and saying that you therefore have “six months to find a job.”

As far as I understand the legal framework, these are separate things.

The six-month period concerns your right to remain in Switzerland after graduation while looking for work. In principle, you could leave Switzerland after graduating, later receive an offer, and apply for the work permit from abroad while still benefiting from the Swiss-graduate exception.

I am not aware of any provision stating that the labour-market-test exemption itself expires exactly six months after graduation.

Again, however, the requirement that the employment be of significant economic or scientific interest remains crucial. The exception is therefore useful, but it is far from an automatic work permit.

My timeline

In my case, I secured a full-time permanent contract (CDI) almost one year before my planned PhD defence.

My employer initially submitted the work-permit application roughly six months before my planned start date.

The immigration authorities responded that they could not yet process the application because the application relied on the Swiss-graduate exception and I had not actually graduated yet.

My employer therefore submitted the application again a couple of weeks before my defence.

On the day of my defence, I immediately sent them the official certificate confirming that I had successfully completed the PhD.

Only a few days later, the cantonal labour authorities approved the application, and I was granted a B permit.

There were ultimately only a few days between my defence and the expected starting date of my new position, but everything worked out.

Final thoughts

I hope this gives some hope to other non-EU PhD students and also clears up some of the incomplete or incorrect information that circulates online.

It is definitely possible to stay in Switzerland after graduating, but the process is neither automatic nor particularly comfortable.

You still need to make yourself an attractive candidate for a position that can realistically justify hiring a non-EU Swiss graduate.

In my own case, I had a strong PhD profile for my field, and my future employer considered my expertise valuable enough to go through the permit procedure and support the application.

Hi everyone,
I’m looking for some advice about my financial situation in Switzerland, preferably from people who have been through something similar or who understand the Swiss debt/poursuite system.
I live in the canton of Jura and I have a Permis B. I work full-time and have a regular income, but over time I accumulated several debts and now have multiple poursuites. I have been trying to deal with them and pay them off, but I feel like I’ve reached a point where it’s becoming very difficult to manage everything at once.
I’m not looking for a way to avoid paying what I owe. I genuinely want to get out of this situation, repay my debts and eventually have a clean financial situation again. I’m just struggling to figure out the best way forward.
I’m particularly interested in knowing:
Is there any organisation in Jura that can help me make a proper debt repayment plan and negotiate with creditors?
Has anyone here used Caritas or another debt counselling service in Switzerland? What was your experience?
Is it possible to get help individually if you are married, or will my husband automatically have to be involved in the process?
What happens when you already have several poursuites and are at risk of a saisie de salaire?
Is there any realistic way of consolidating debts when you already have poursuites, or is that basically impossible in Switzerland?
For people who have managed to get out of a similar situation: what did you do, and how long did it take?
I know I made mistakes with my finances and I’m not expecting a miracle solution. I just want to find the most responsible way to deal with everything before the situation gets worse.
I would especially appreciate advice specific to the canton of Jura, since I know some services and procedures can vary depending on the canton.

Terminated during sick leave after a miscarriage, now pregnant again – not sure whether to fight or move on

This is my first time posting on reddit, I have always been a silent reader. Sorry for the long story, maybe someone can relate or has guidance on what to do.

TL;DR: Employer doesn't accept nullity of the termination during Sperrfrist / pregnancy and I don't know whether to sue or not.

Background: First year at my new job (not in probationary period anymore). Very small company, I am the only female employee and my boss is also the owner of the company. The relationship with my boss is okay, although he is a bit of a difficult character, rather passive-aggressive, avoiding conflict and criticizing indirectly or behind people's back. But nothing I can't handle. I was pregnant for the first time, but haven't told my employer yet as it is too early. I am already researching childcare options around the office, determined to continue working full time after maternity leave.

Fast forward to April 1st: I start bleeding, call my Hausarzt as the gynecologist was closed that day. They tell me to go to the hospital right away to see if there's anything that can be done. I remember sitting on the bus to the hospital thinking about the irony of this happening on April Fool's Day. I sent my boss a Teams message saying that I won't be able to come to the office for medical reasons.

At the hospital, they do all the checks, bloodwork etc., say that they don't know yet what will happen to the pregnancy. Tell me to come back for blood analysis two days later to find out more as it might be an ectopic pregnancy (which can be fatal). They put me on sick leave for two days until Easter as I don't feel fit to work for psychological reasons. After the second bloodwork, they tell me that I lost the pregnancy and that they will have to continue monitoring for an ectopic pregnancy. I spend Easter with my family, trying to process what happened.

The day after Easter, I go back to work as usual. My boss was busy with another employee, I start working on my topics. When he is done, he suddenly asks me "what I was working on, if he may ask" and starts complaining about a document I wrote the week before. Not in a constructive kind of way, sitting down together looking at the document and looking at the specific points he criticizes. Instead, mentioning different points of critique in one sentence without any structure, exaggerating the points (as later turned out), saying things like "I don't understand how this could have happened [that you write a bad report like this]" or "we had to take over as we didn't know when you would be back" (in an accusatory tone). Basically, he says (in front of the other coworkers) "we have to look at your report later, because all is bad", and then lists all the points he thinks are bad, without details. So far, my boss had been content with my written reports, but this type of report was new for me and my boss had not been available the week prior to discuss the details. That is why my plan was to write a draft (as I did) and discuss the details after my return. I tell him that we should look at the report now, as I have to go back to the hospital in the afternoon and don't know if I may need surgery in the future. I didn't give any details, but the doctor's note is from "Frauenklinik" and "Brustzentrum", so for all he knows I may also have breast cancer. I go over the report with the coworker (turns out, the boss has not even read the report himself) and it's not as bad as he made it sound. I do a handover with the coworker in case I am absent the next day.

At the hospital, they still don't know much more. Basically, after having tried to get pregnant for months, you now have to wait until you are chemically not pregnant anymore, so you're doing blood analysis hoping the Beta-hCG goes down to zero. I got another sick note as I couldn't deal with the stress at work and this situation at the same time. During this time, I also sought help from a psychiatrist. I had to go to the hospital regularly during the next two weeks, during which they put me on sick leave (100%). The week of April 27th, I was planning to go back to work 50% for one week, after that full time. The beta-hCG was still not low enough, but it was going down so I knew then that I luckily wouldn't have to undergo surgery. My usual gynecologist took over my care so I didn't have to go to the hospital anymore for future tests.

April 27th, I go to the office and my boss calls me in for a meeting. They give me a written termination letter (3 months notice period according to the contract). Nothing surprising there as I know that employers don't need a reason to fire you. I was actually relieved as I was thinking about leaving myself because this work environment was bad for my health and for future pregnancies. What took me by surprise was that they told me that I wouldn't receive a salary for the current month. I knew that I had a Krankentaggeldversicherung, but what I didn't know was that they had a 3-month waiting period. I had previously been on sick leave after a planned surgery, so the days of gesetzliche Lohnfortzahlung for that year had already expired. I asked for garden leave during the notice period and they said no, there was no issue with me continuing to work as usual until the end of the contract. This is honestly a bad business decision as I work in a very sensitive field, but I guess the boss knew that my health would not allow me to continue working there. I signed for the reception of the termination letter and asked them to leave early that day as I was on 50% sick leave and had a lot to process. Finished up some tasks, emptied my desk and left. The same day, I saw my psychiatrist and got a 100% sick note (in addition to the 50% I already had from the hospital). I also registered for RAV that very day.

I have been on sick leave since then. My degree of incapacity for work has been gradually decreasing, but it remains 100% "arbeitsplatzbezogen". I didn't get any money whatsoever for three months, after that the sickness insurance started paying. Had some discussions with Arbeitslosenkasse who of course don't want me on RAV and claim that my employer has to pay and the termination is null. Had a lawyer look over my documents (which cost me almost CHF 500 as I didn't have Rechtsschutz at the time). She told me that the termination is indeed probably null because it was during the 30-day Sperrfrist (they should have waited until May to fire me) and possibly also because I was still technically pregnant at the time. She advised me to disclose the lost pregnancy to my employer and to claim the nullity of the termination, which I did.

My employer replied that the termination was valid in their view and requested documentation of the pregnancy (which I provided). They also sent me my Arbeitszeugnis which was quite bad. Since they refused the nullity of the termination, I filed for a Schlichtungsverfahren.

One day before the Schlichtungsverhandlung, the Schlichter informs me that my boss will come with a lawyer. I was previously told that a Schlichtungsverfahren could also be done without a lawyer, but if I had known earlier I would of course have hired a lawyer. So I only went with my husband for moral support. Needless to say this was emotionally very difficult for me. The lawyer had a long list of "questions"/statements like "why does the doctor's note say "Krankheit" and not "Schwangerschaftskomplikationen"" (I don't know, you have to ask the hospital - probably because it's none of my employer's business), "why does the doctor's note say I was pregnant from April 1st when I said I was pregnant earlier" (that was the day it was proven by blood test) etc.; Overall you could see that he had no clue about how pregnancies work and just threw things at me to intimidate me. Their standpoint was that the termination was not null, without any proper justification. There was no proposition of signing a termination agreement or anything. This really took me by surprise as I was expecting them to try to settle (I heard that Schlichtungsverfahren often end in a settlement). Also, there would be a reputation loss for the company as the business activity has to do with courts and lawyers. But no, it seems like my employer is bluffing that I won't take the risk of taking him to court. And he might be right as I don't have Rechtsschutz and there is probably not much to gain financially in my case (depending on how long my Krankentaggeldversicherung pays). The Schlichter also said that the termination was probably null, but since I am arbeitsplatzbezogen arbeitsunfähig it's not sure what I would gain from it. It would depend on whether the sickness allowance pays.

So here I am. For now, the sickness insurance pays. But I am worried that if I don't pursue the nullity claim, they will at one point reclaim the money paid. I guess if I did not sue, I would count as unemployed since August, and I would retrospectively be on RAV since then - except that I don't get RAV while I am on sick leave. I am pregnant again, trying to focus on my mental health and on keeping this pregnancy. Looking for a new job, but as we all know the job market is difficult at the moment and I am also worried that I might end up in a worse situation than now if I get fired during the probationary period when they find out I'm pregnant.

Would you fight this or just move on? I think psychologically, I would regret not fighting it. But financially, going to court might not be the best decision.

Looking for advices on buying a car to replace our Mercedes B-Class

Our 2014 Mercedes B-Class is too small and the infotainment is outdated, so we’re considering options. We want a German car (Mercedes, BMW, or Audi) but not a VW.

Has anyone considered the Audi Q5 in a similar situation? I’m trying to decide if it’s the right choice.

Here are some details about our situation:
- Family: 3 kids (9, 5, and 3 months old)
- Budget: CHF 30,000–45,000
- Ownership: Plan to keep the car for 5–6 years, then switch to another model

I prefer a coupe-style silhouette, but it needs to work practically for the back seats, including a baby seat, a seat for the 5-year-old, and the 9-year-old sitting in the middle. The interior doesn’t need to be top-of-the-line, but I’d like a good-looking dashboard, working CarPlay pairing with iPhone. Leather or faux leather seats only, no suede or cloth. I don’t need EV/hybrid charging because I can’t charge at home or work.

In June, the Tenants Association submitted their rent control initiative, with 140,048 signatures calling for lower rents. The Federal Council had to respond. Its response is a scandal, because its proposals achieve precisely the opposite and drive rents even higher. It's a real outrage to tenants when the Federal Council proposes the following:

💣 The restriction on landlord profits is to be lifted: away from the currently legally mandated cost-based rent, towards market-based rent: free rein for landlords to raise rents.

📈 Rents are to be more closely linked to inflation: If healthcare costs or food prices rise, rents will increase accordingly. Rents would automatically rise without anything changing in your apartment.

Instead of setting limits on exorbitant rents, this will eliminate the last remaining protection against exploitative rents.

UBS is reportedly considering a merger with a foreign bank and relocating its headquarters. The rumor, which comes just after the Swiss Council of States' decision to increase the bank's capital requirements, sent UBS shares soaring by more than 3% on the Swiss stock exchange on Friday.

UBS could be considering a merger with a competitor, according to Semafor Business magazine, which cites anonymous sources. The article's author believes this merger could be with the American bank Morgan Stanley, Deutsche Bank, or the British bank Standard Chartered.

Semafor is an online media outlet, founded four years ago in the United States by a former editor-in-chief of BuzzFeed and a former CEO of Bloomberg. The rumor has been picked up by numerous media outlets, which was enough to send UBS's stock price soaring.

Ich habe folgenden Plan, jedoch bin ich mir nicht sicher ob dieser aufgehen wird. Deshalb bitte ich um Erfahrungsberichte von euch!
Und Zwar habe ich meinen Haupteinsatz bereits hinter mir. Ich war noch nicht offiziell erwerbstätig (EFZ abgeschlossen und dann Haupteinsatz).
Nach dem Haupteinsatz gehe ich ca 5 Monate (ohne Erwerbstätigkeit) auf eine Weltreise. Danach will ich bis zum Studium Zivildienst machen.
Um im Zivildienst möglichst viel Geld zu verdienen will ich entweder vor oder unmittelbar nach der Reise einen Monat (mindestens 160h laut Reglement) temporär arbeiten.
Das ziel ist es dann 80% dieses Lohnes zu bekommen.

Denkt ihr dass dieser Plan aufgeht?
Was sind eure Erfahrungen?

Ich habe bereits bei Ausgleichskassen angerufen, jedoch nur schwammige Antworten und trotz Abmachung keine Antworten auf meine Emails erhalten. Naja ist auch nicht ihr Problem..

Regular sandwiches tend to get warm and soggy, and I always find nuts a bit boring after a while.
