The Greatest Video Game Tech Demo Ever

Shadow of the Beast was a groundbreaking achievement in video games. In 1989 the concept of multi-layer parallax scrolling, and 120+ colors on screen running on a stock Amiga at 7mhz was unheard of. And yet Psygnosis and Reflections made it possible. As a game - Shadow of the Beast was a disappointment, but as a tech demo? It's one of the greatest ever made. In this episode we take a deep dive into the graphics of Shadow of the Beast.

Home Alone is a video game that's very loosely based on the movie of the same name. While the movie has Kevin McCallister defending his house from the Wet Bandits, in this game, he must avoid them from capturing him while saving the other houses in the neighborhood from being totally robbed and damaged by them. And it appears his neighbors have some really weird stuff in their houses, yet Kevin, Harry, and Marv can break into them no matter what security systems they have.

alexheights1 ( https://tasvideos.org/Users/Profile/alexheights1 ) uses a new route by utilizing a tire to jump over an elevator, saving 1033 frames or 00:17.239 over the previous publication ( https://tasvideos.org/5164M ).

Sinclair User The Early Years part 1 - Classic ZX Spectrum magazine reviews

A deep dive into the early years of Sinclair User, the first all‑singing, all‑dancing ZX Spectrum magazine. This special mini‑series explores the magazine’s formative 1982–1983 era—long before Your Spectrum and Crash arrived to shake up the newsstand.

Across four episodes, I revisit the news, features, reviews, type‑ins, and quirky articles that defined Sinclair User: The Early Years.

In this episode, I cover the first six issues of the magazine, spanning April to September 1982. This was a pivotal moment in Spectrum history, when Sinclair User stood alone as the go‑to source for ZX Spectrum news, games, and community coverage. What did those early issues get right? What feels lost to time? Let’s find out.

Thunder Force III side-scrolling shoot 'em up game developed by Technosoft for the Sega Genesis in 1990. It is the third entry in the Thunder Force ( https://tasvideos.org/1285G ) series. The notable change is the removal of top-down shooter stages from two previous games, and replaced them with side-scrolling shooter stages.

Thunder Force III's story is set about 100 years after Thunder Force, and directly after Thunder Force II. ORN empire installed cloaking devices in five planets and made a remote defense system named Cerberus to protect ORN empire from various assaults. As a response, Galaxy Federation deploys FIRE LEO-03 Styx on a mission to destroy five cloaking devices.

thegugafá ( https://tasvideos.org/Users/Profile/thegugafá ) completes the game on Normal difficulty and destroys ORN emperor in record time.

This is a tool-assisted speedrun. For more information, see https://tasvideos.org/7133M
TAS originally published on 2026-05-14

Thunder Force V: Perfect System is a shoot 'em up game developed by Technosoft and Working Designs for the PlayStation in 1998. It is the fifth game in the Thunder Force ( https://tasvideos.org/138G ) series, as well as the first game made for the PlayStation. The game is rendered with 2D polygons in addition to sprites, and its soundtracks are composed with techno rearrangements. The game features a special weapon called "CRAWs" which shoots additional firepower and has the ability to absorb enemy shots, and allows up to three CRAWs to be used on the ship, as opposed to two in previous games. Another new feature in this game is the "Over Weapon", which combines CRAWs and the currently selected weapon to create a more powerful version of that weapon.

thegugafá ( https://tasvideos.org/Users/Profile/thegugafá ) completes the game on the Normal difficulty and destroys Guardian in record time.

Airborne Ranger - Longplay

Behind enemy lines with only your wits and a knife! Watch the full longplay of Airborne Ranger for the Commodore 64.

Released in 1987 by the legendary MicroProse, Airborne Ranger is a masterclass in tactical stealth and action. Unlike the "run and gun" shooters of the era, this game requires careful planning, resource management, and a silent approach. You are a lone ranger dropped deep into enemy territory to complete high-stakes missions ranging from sabotage to prisoner rescue.

In this full longplay, I complete a full tour of duty, showcasing the strategic equipment drops, the tension of crawling through minefields, and the frantic dash for the V-22 Osprey extraction. Experience the procedural map generation and the high-stakes gameplay that made this a definitive title for the C64.

In this Airborne Ranger C64 Longplay:

COMMANDO II (1992 / English version) Walkthrough, ZX Spectrum

This game is an unofficial sequel to Elite’s Commando game, and you are controlling Nas, a member of the special commando squad team, that was sent into enemy territory to destroy a nuclear reactor, used for production of atomic warheads.

When the game starts, Nas has damaged the reactor with explosives, causing it to meltdown, and has to make his way to a waiting helicopter so he can escape.

A damaged nuclear reactor is off course not very healthy, so besides the attacking enemies you also have to keep an eye on the radioactivity %. This starts at 6% and you have to get to the helicopter before it reaches 100%.

You have to walk 3.5 km to get to the helicopter, and on this distance you will meet a lot of enemies, and you will also see other squad team members that has been captured. Some are dead and some are alive, if you rescue those who are alive you will get a flamethrower or a bazooka with limited shots, or new supplies of grenades.

The game plays very similar to the original Commando game, and this game also has eight levels. The biggest difference between the two games is that this one has a much higher amount of details to the graphics, and that there is no enemy base you have to defeat at the end of the levels.

It is a shame that there is no in game AY soundtrack, especially as the game is from 1992, but besides that this game can easily compete with the original game, so if you liked that you should also check out this one!

The game was released by Ultrasoft in 1992.

This is a tool-assisted speedrun. For more information, see https://tasvideos.org/7127M
TAS originally published on 2026-05-11

Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong are on a quest to retrieve the former's banana horde from the Kremlings. They are doing it as quickly as possible, without bothering to enter all the bonus rooms.

This run is 00:02.513 seconds faster than the previous ( https://tasvideos.org/4119M ) submission, mostly due to slight improvements in the beginning of the run as well as some small frame saves in later levels.

If you desire more rolling primates, we recommend watching the 101% completion movie ( https://tasvideos.org/3415M ). We also have a walkathon ( https://tasvideos.org/3956M ) that completes the game at a more leisurely pace.

Tez-X Spectrum 1154 3D Starstrike

3D Starstrike Realtime Games 1984
This fast-paced 3D vector shoot-'em-up is an unashamed love letter to the Star Wars trench run and Atari's arcade Star Wars game. You pilot a fighter in wireframe 3D, blasting through waves of enemies before taking on a massive enemy battle station—complete with surface attacks and a reactor core assault.
One of the best 3D games on the ZX Spectrum and a must-play for Star Wars fans. It punches well above its weight and is considerably more playable than the Domark licensed released a few years later.

Scrooge McDuck is advanced in years, he travels around the lake with Niagara on one side and Scotland on another, and beats money out of half-transparent bosses. He hides in the sand and rides the vertex, gets lightning strikes and beats liquid D-1000 robot with his little toe. He also jumps on his pogo stick like he has dementia. Or maybe all that is just a fancy of his senile mind?

McBobX ( https://tasvideos.org/Users/Profile/McBobX ) aims to achieve the best ending in the game, which requires obtaining all 7 map pieces to unlock the secret underground area in the Scotland stage.

In Metal Max, a mysterious war known as "The Havoc" has almost destroyed the human civilization. It's unknown how it broke out, and no one even dares to find out. The few who are left have to struggle to survive. Among them is our young hero, 6, who just makes his decision to become a great Hunter.

Released by Data East in Japan in 1991, Metal Max was one of the more "creative" console role-playing games due to more freedom in the story. The game is set in a post-apocalyptic future, in which surviving people cluster from villages to ruins, while some Hunters among them fight monsters and outlaws in the "wild".

Mars608 ( https://tasvideos.org/Users/Profile/%20Mars608 ) improves the previous run by 01:01.282 thanks to better luck manipulation, faster fight on the first phase of the final boss and better optimization.

Lightening Force: Quest for the Darkstar, also known as Thunder Force IV, is a side-scrolling shoot 'em up that was developed by Technosoft and the fourth game in the Thunder Force series. The same gameplay mechanics from the previous games return, including the weapons, the CLAW pods, and the ability to change the ship's speed. New to this entry is the ability to play the first four stages in any order and the Thunder Sword, a powerful weapon tat requires the CLAWs. As for the story, the war between the ORN Empire and the Galactic Federation continues and approaches its 100th year, with the Galactic Federation continuing to be the underdog and stop the ORN Empire's tyrannical reign.

In this run, thegugafá ( https://tasvideos.org/Users/Profile/thegugafá ) plays the game on the Normal difficulty and finally ends the ORN Empire for good in record time, leaving a potential enemy in Faust to return in a later entry.

K-1 Pocket Grand Prix (K-1ポケットグランプリ) is a licensed fighting game for the Game Boy Advance that was released only in Japan. It is based on the K-1 World Grand Prix kickboxing tournament, which was organized by a kickboxing promotion from Tokyo known as K-1. It takes inspiration from other "pocket fighting games" by having various real life kickboxers compete against each other in a deformed chibi art style.

KusogeMan ( https://tasvideos.org/Users/Profile/KusogeMan ) in this run chooses Mirko Cro Cop, a kickboxer from Croatia, and plays through Grand Prix mode at the hardest difficulty, Shippu Jinraikyaku-ing their way through the competition to become champion in record time.

Revengers of Vengeance, also known in Japan as Battle Fantasy (バトル ファンタジー), is a fighting game that was developed by Micronet for the Sega CD. It features simple fighting game mechanics inspired by Street Fighter II and three game modes that make use of it, one of which is the multi-genre "The Quest to Destroy Venum". This mode plays like a role-playing game where the objective is to find the relevant plot items and build up enough strength to defeat the diabolical Venum. Money and experience is earned by partaking in fights or going on quests, the latter which is represented by minigames of vertically scrolling shoot 'em ups.

In this run, alexheights1 ( https://tasvideos.org/Users/Profile/alexheights1 ) chooses Psybart for his overwhelming strength and beats "The Quest to Destroy Venum" at the hardest difficulty in record time by manipulating the RNG into giving them the required items without having to fight for them and landing critical hits as often as possible.

Tez-X Spectrum 1137 Super Hang On

Super Hang On Electric Dreams 1988
This isn't a gentle Sunday ride. The game is Super Hard On hard right from the start, and it ramps up mercilessly. Early stages are forgiving enough to hook you in, but by the time you're tackling the longer twistier tracks you're gonna need a perfect run just to extend your time.
Mastering the turbo timing and learning exactly where you can afford to cut corners becomes essential. One wrong move and you can say goodbye to all your progression. I've had this game since 1988 and I've never got off the first stage, so for this video the cheats are on, as I want to experience the whole game. Are you ready to hang on?

B.C.'s Quest for Tires is a 1983 video game developed by Sydney Development and published by Sierra On-Line. It was released for not just the Commodore 64, but also the ColecoVision, Atari 8-bit family, ZX Spectrum, MSX, and Apple II. The game is based on the comic strip B.C. ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/B.C._(comic) ) by Johnny Hart, with the title being a play on the title of the contemporaneous film Quest for Fire.

In the game, the player takes the role of the caveman Thor, who has to rescue his girlfriend, "Cute Chick", who has been kidnapped by a dinosaur. To do this, he must travel on his stone unicycle (actually an impossible wheel) through several levels. Each level has Thor moving from the left to the right, avoiding various dangers.

Walgrey ( https://tasvideos.org/Users/Profile/Walgrey ) here helps get Thor rolling quickly to his girlfriend so he can rescue her in record time.

Void - CDTVis35 - 2026 - Amiga CDTV Music Disc

Credits for this video goes to Charlie from the Revision demo crew. He did this recording with a real Amiga CDTV. Many thanks!

The video shows apx. 1 minute of each song being played. We might come back with a full video playing the full length of each song.

For now you'll need to download the archive (which will be available soon) and run the music disc on a CDTV, CD32 or through emulation.

Here is an excerpt from the readme-file from the release.

[ Overview ]

"CDTV is 35" is a musicdisc demo especially designed for the Commodore Amiga CDTV and as such its most distinctive feature is the use of Compact Disc music.

[ System requirements ]

A minimum of a PAL Commodore Amiga CDTV or A500 / A500+ with A570:
- Motorola 68000 cpu
- OCS chipset
- 1 MB of memory
- Kickstart 1.3, CDTV OS 1.0

In theory the demo might also run on CD32 and on any CD-ROM based Amiga given that the CD file system supports emulation of CDTV / CD32.

Best experienced with the CDTV connected to a Hi-Fi / audio speakers.

Resident Evil 2, known in Japan as Biohazard 2, is a 1998 survival horror video game originally released for the PlayStation. Developed by Capcom as the second installment in the Resident Evil series, its story takes place two months after the events of the first game, Resident Evil ( https://tasvideos.org/1876M ). The GameCube version features support for vibration and analog controls, as well as a new unlockable minigame called "Extreme Battle", and a "Rookie" mode that enables the player to start the main story with a powerful weapon that features infinite ammunition.

This run by Uroboros ( https://tasvideos.org/Users/Profile/Uroboros ) beats the bonus mode The 4th Survivor on the GameCube version of the game, which is esentially a speedrun challenge mode built around efficiency and routing. The mode is unlocked after the completion of both Leon A ( https://tasvideos.org/3374M ) and Claire B ( https://tasvideos.org/6909M ) scenarios.

Keio Flying Squadron 2 is a multi-genre game for the Sega Saturn and the sequel to Keio Flying Squadron. Unlike the previous game, it was released only in Japan and Europe. And also different in terms of gameplay, while the first game was strictly a side-scrolling shoot 'em up, this game also includes platforming levels that appear to be inspired by other games such as Donkey Kong Country and Yoshi's Island 2.

Taking place sometime after the first game, Keio Flying Squadron 2 starts out with super powered bunnygirl Rami having a nice dinner with her grandparents when a thief named Yamatai Himiko barges in and steals the family snow globe. After a brief chase, Dr. Pon Eho, the final villain from the previous game, intervenes and steals the snow globe while also dropping a nuke on Rami's home. Luckily, he also drops a map with locations of all the other snow globes. Rami goes off on an adventure to find those snow globes and sell them for some cash.

SpectralPlatypus ( https://tasvideos.org/Users/Profile/SpectralPlatypus ) in this run fights off lots of strange and mystifying creatures and bosses to achieve yet another comedic ending for Rami as fast as possible with the help of some platforming tricks and a little pain and gain for Rami.

25 Hardest C64 Games Ever Made – You Will Not Finish These

Brutal Commodore 64 Games – The Hardest C64 Games Ever Made
Full game pages for every title featured:
https://www.cheekycommodoregamer.co.uk/

This video dives into some of the most brutally difficult games ever released on the Commodore 64 — the ones that didn’t just challenge you… they punished you. From pixel-perfect platformers and relentless shooters to awkward control systems and unforgiving design, these are the C64 games that pushed players to their absolute limit.

Featured in this video are notoriously difficult Commodore 64 titles such as The Last V8, Airwolf, The Human Race, China Miner, Cauldron, Monty on the Run, Raid Over Moscow, Uridium, Spindizzy, Spelunker, Manic Miner, Jet Set Willy, IO (Into Oblivion), Shadow of the Beast, RoboCop, Cybernoid, Army Moves, Ghosts ’n Goblins, Green Beret, Ninja Spirit, Cobra and more.

Back in the 8-bit era, difficulty was part of the design. There were no checkpoints, no saves, and very little forgiveness — meaning progress came through repetition, memorisation, and sheer determination. Many of these games are still remembered today not just for their gameplay, but for how hard they were to master.

Some were brilliantly designed challenges. Others were just outright punishing. But all of them helped define the Commodore 64 experience.

Which Commodore 64 game destroyed you the most — and did you ever actually finish any of these?

Super Cars -Versions Comparison- Amiga, Atari ST, NES, C64 and much more!

Super Cars is a top-view racing game from Gremlin Interactive, who later produced the Lotus series of games. Stylistically, the game is influenced by Super Sprint.

There are endless tracks at each of the 4 difficulty levels, which can be raced in any order (although the last track raced is made harder than usual). In the races the player wins money, which can be spent on temporary handling and power upgrades, plus armour plating and front/rear shooting missiles that can knock out other racers. The player must finish in the top 3 of each race to progress - initially there are 4 computer opponents, but more are added as the game progresses.

bleem! – The PlayStation Emulator That Ran on a Pentium 166 | Creator Interview

In 1999, one emulator shocked the gaming world.

bleem! was one of the first Sony PlayStation emulators capable of running commercial games smoothly on ordinary PCs — even on systems as modest as a Pentium 166. At a time when PlayStation emulation seemed nearly impossible, bleem! proved it could be done.

In this exclusive interview, Zophar, founder of Zophar’s Domain, one of the earliest and most influential emulation archives on the internet, sits down with Randy Linden, the programmer behind bleem!, to discuss the story behind this groundbreaking emulator.

Released in March of 1999, bleem! quickly became one of the most talked-about pieces of software in the emulation world. It demonstrated that PlayStation games could run on PC hardware with impressive speed and compatibility, pushing the boundaries of what people believed emulation could achieve at the time.

But Randy Linden’s career goes far beyond bleem!. Earlier in the 1990s he developed NES titles including Home Alone and Where’s Waldo?, and he achieved one of the most technically impressive console feats of the era by porting Doom to the Super Nintendo — something many developers believed wasn’t even possible on that hardware.

In this conversation we explore the development of bleem!, the technical challenges of emulating the PlayStation in the late 1990s, and Randy’s long history working on groundbreaking gaming technology.

Topics Covered
• The origins of bleem!
• How PlayStation games ran on a Pentium 166
• The story behind the SNES port of Doom
• Developing Home Alone and Where’s Waldo? for the NES
• Technical challenges of PlayStation emulation in the 1990s
• The legacy of bleem! in emulation history
• Randy's current projects with Limited Run Games

About Zophar’s Domain
Founded in the late 1990s, Zophar’s Domain became one of the internet’s earliest hubs for video game emulation, hosting emulators, ROM tools, SPC music archives, and documentation that helped preserve gaming history for future generations.

Were Games Better on the Amiga or Archimedes?

Was the Acorn Archimedes actually better than the Amiga… or did we get it completely wrong?

In this video, I take a deep dive into one of the most fascinating (and misunderstood) computers of the late 1980s — the Acorn Archimedes. Powered by the revolutionary ARM processor, it should have been a serious contender against the mighty Commodore Amiga… but was it?

We start with the origins of the Archimedes and its impressive tech specs, comparing it to other 16-bit machines of the era. Then we take a look at some of its more obscure and lesser-known games — the kind you rarely see covered — before putting it head-to-head with the Amiga in a showdown of five major titles.

So… were games actually better on the Archimedes? Or is the Amiga still king?

Let’s find out.

Elements of Green: time-lapse pixel art

"Elements of Green" by Prowler (Klas Benjaminsson).

Made for the graphics compo at Datastorm 2013 (placed 1:st), and for the demo "15 years of fame". Sorry it had to be a party-version for the compo - but time beat me big time this year! You can download the final version here:
www.antialias.se/prowler_lib/elements_of_green.png
Greetings to everyone at the party!
The idea was to visualize the 3 elements of the forest and make them blend into the woods seamlessly. The picture didn't really turn out the way I hoped and the composition went off balance, but it was fun to make it anyways.

Big thanks to Abyssal Plains (Maurizio Giambrone) for letting me use his amazing tune "Orange River", featured in the album "Hemispherical Sky".
