Kangaroo Meat Better For Environment

SYDNEY - Farming kangaroos instead of sheep and cattle in Australia could cut by almost a quarter the greenhouse gases produced by grazing livestock, which account for 11 percent of the nation's annual emissions, said a new study.

Removing seven million cattle and 36 million sheep by 2020 and replacing them with 175 million kangaroos, to produce the same amount of meat, could lower national greenhouse gases by 3 percent a year, said the University of New South Wales study.

From Oil To Natural Gas Heating: More Americans Switching

Suzanne and Dave Francione figured they could reduce their heating bill by $1,300 this winter by switching from oil to natural gas, so they called the utility company and plumbers. That was in May. Today, the couple is still waiting on their conversion, which won't be done until September because of a growing backlog of other Northeasterners desperate to abandon costly heating oil.

"We were watching the price of oil escalate" and determined that the winter heating-oil bill would hit $3,000, says Mr. Francione, a Needham, Mass., investment banker. "That's when we decided to convert."

Gitmo On The Platte": Denver Warehouse Filled With Cages For Democratic Convention Arrests

CBS4 News has learned if mass arrests happen at the Democratic Convention, those taken into custody will be jailed in a warehouse owned by the City of Denver. Investigator Rick Sallinger discovered the location and managed to get inside for a look.

The newly created lockup is on the northeast side of Denver. Protesters have already given this place a name: "Gitmo on the Platte."

Inside are dozens are metal cages. They are made out of chain link fence material and topped by rolls of barbed wire.

Area Home Sales Plummet Nearly 30%

Home sales in the Chicago area fell almost 29% in the second quarter compared with the second quarter of 2007, according to the Illinois Assn. of Realtors.

In the nine-county Chicago region, single-family and condominium sales totaled 20,679 in the second quarter, compared with 29,092 sales in second-quarter 2007, the Realtors' group said in a release Wednesday.

The median home sale price in the Chicago area was $250,000 in the second quarter, down from $256,000 in the same period last year. The median is the price where half the homes sold for more and half sold for less.
