January to March: Calving Season on the Southern Plains

By late January, the herds settle on the short-grass plains south and east of the Serengeti, toward Ndutu and the northern Ngorongoro Conservation Area. This is calving season. Over a few weeks, hundreds of thousands of calves drop, stand, and stumble into life. Predators focus, especially cheetah and lion. It is the first chapter of the year, full of energy and risk. 

What your days feel like: Early starts, long light, and patient waits on open country while your guide reads distance and wind. Full-day outings make sense because the story can turn in a moment. Where walks are permitted, morning loops teach you to read the signs on the ground and approach with care. 

Where to stay and why: Southern migrational camps put you close to the action, with king-size beds, big canvas, and that fire-to-table feeling at night. Ubuntu Migration Camp and Olakira Migration Camp are set up in the south to catch calving and the predator action that follows, while a permanent camp like Dunia works well as herds begin to push north. 

April to early June: The Trek North and the Rut

As the long rains ease, the herds begin to drift north and west. Columns stretch for kilometers, grazing as they go. By late May, the rut kicks off, and males clash as the march continues. This is the time many travelers overlook the Western Corridor and the Grumeti River, which is a pity. First river tests often happen here in June, with huge crocodiles holding to deep pools. It is dramatic, with far fewer vehicles than later in the Mara, and rates are friendlier. 

What your days feel like: Long, exploratory drives through central and western grasslands. Shifting weather and rich skies. Quiet time at Grumeti pools to let the scene come to you. When you find the rut, you can stay with a group and watch behavior rather than rush between vehicles.

Where to stay and why: Dunia sits well for central movements in April and May. For the west, consider Usawa Western Corridor, Mila Tented Camp, and Simbavati Musabi Plains. We often pair the west with a few nights in a migrational camp that is repositioning north so you keep step with the herds. 

Late June to October: Northern Drama, From Lamai to the Mara

By late June and into July, momentum builds toward the northern Serengeti and the Kenya border. This is when the famous Mara River crossings begin, though timing always depends on the rains. The herds spread across Kogatende and Lamai on the Tanzania side, with others pushing into the Masai Mara in Kenya. Crossings happen in many places, sometimes a handful of animals, sometimes a surge that lasts for hours. The scene can repeat for weeks as herds shuttle back and forth looking for grazing. 

What your days feel like: Early river checks, then patient time on banks with guides who understand reading points and etiquette. You may wait with engines off and radios quiet, then move quickly when a line forms. Full-day vehicles with shade and packed lunches are the norm. On non-river days, you work ridge lines and rolling country for lions and cheetahs shadowing the herds. 

Where to stay and why: We often split time between the Lamai triangle in northern Serengeti and a conservancy or the Reserve in the Masai Mara. On the Tanzania side, Sayari sits close to well-known crossing points and keeps you in the thick of it without the busiest Mara crowds. Mobile camps like Olakira and Ubuntu shift north to keep you near the action. In Kenya, Rekero overlooks the Talek, while Naboisho and Encounter Mara in the Naboisho Conservancy offer superb big-cat viewing with stricter vehicle limits and a calmer feel. 

A note on pressure and privacy: The northern Serengeti is vast, with multiple crossing sites and wide country to spread into. Choosing the Lamai side can give you classic crossings without the densest traffic, and smart routing keeps time at crowded hotspots to a minimum. November to December: The Long Arc South

When the short rains arrive, the herds begin to flow back into Tanzania from Kenya and track south along the eastern side of the ecosystem. This is when Namiri Plains becomes a favorite for cheetah as grasses flush and resident predators work the edges. By December, the herds gather again on the southern and eastern plains, heavy with calves, and the cycle resets. 

What your days feel like: Fresh green after rain, dramatic skies, big flocks of birds, and fewer vehicles than peak months. Morning light on new grass is beautiful for wide-angle work. Drives can be long and quiet in the best way, with bursts of intense action when you find a cheetah or a large mixed herd on the move. 

Where to stay and why: Namiri Plains for the east, and migrational camps in the south as we move back toward calving grounds. Permanent bases feel lively again as the holiday season approaches. 

What “Accommodation Type” Really Means Up North, East, South, and West

Permanent lodges and tented camps

Year-round locations with full services, generous suites, and often a pool or spa. In central and northern Serengeti and in the Mara, permanent bases give stability and fast access to nearby sectors. This suits travelers who prefer a strong room-based experience and a set location.

Migrational camps

Specialists that move two or three times each year. They set up where the action is, then shift as the herds move on. The feel is immersive and comfortable rather than showy, with king-size beds and quality linen, good wine and fresh food, and warm bucket showers. Central mess tents with deep chairs face the savannah so you do not miss a thing. Olakira and Ubuntu are good examples, placing you in the south for calving and up in the north for crossings when timing calls for it. Sayari anchors the northern period as a permanent camp close to the river. Dunia covers the central chapter well, then links easily with the west or north.

Western Corridor stays

Perfect for May and June, the low-season sweet spot with fewer vehicles, strong value, and Grumeti crossings when the year runs on time. Options include Usawa Western Corridor, Mila Tented Camp, and Simbavati Musabi Plains. Ideal for travelers who prefer space and patience to headline crowds.

Mara Reserve and conservancies

A gift at dawn over the Serengeti or the Mara. You rise as the first light touches the plains, watch giraffes step in slow rhythm across the grass, then land for a bush breakfast in the wild before heading back to camp.

How the Rains, Rates, and Camp Calendars Shape Your Trip

Two patterns matter most. Long rains tend to fall from March through May. Short rains often arrive around November. These patterns move the herds and also shape camp openings. Several mobile or remote camps pause in April and May and return with drier ground in June, while northern and central bases stay open and active. If you are set on a particular camp, a balloon flight, or a sleepout, plan early, because prime rooms during crossings and holiday weeks sell out far ahead. 

Pricing follows the calendar. Peak months around crossings and the festive season carry the highest rates. April, May, and early June in the west and central are often priced lower and come with fewer visitors. You trade a little weather risk for space, value, and beautiful photographic conditions. 

What To Expect, Practically

• Vehicles and timing: In peak months up north, private vehicles give you the freedom to wait for crossings without compromise. In shoulder and green months, shared vehicles work well because days are calmer and guides can linger. 

• Photography: Expect dust in July and August, and occasional showers in April and November. A beanbag and a simple rain cover help. Wider lenses than you expect are useful for sweeping herds. 

• Pace: Pair a migrational camp with a permanent base so you experience both immersion and comfort. Three or four nights per location is ideal, which makes two or three bases a sweet spot for a deep, unhurried trip. 

• Balance: For a quieter chapter inside a busy month, work the Lamai triangle in Tanzania or a Mara conservancy for slower mornings and flexible activities, then add one or two focused river days. 

Is Migration Guaranteed?

No, and any operator who tells you otherwise is overselling it. The migration is driven by rainfall, and rainfall in East Africa doesn't follow a fixed schedule. The herds move when the grass tells them to, not when your flights are booked.

What this means in practice. The broad seasonal patterns, Tanzania in the dry season, Kenya from August onwards, hold true year after year. But the exact timing of a river crossing, or whether the herds are in your camp's corridor on a given day, is never certain.

How Long Should You Spend?

Minimum: 4 nights in one location. Less than that and you're spending your best hours in transit.

For the Serengeti calving season, 5–6 nights give you time to track the birthing grounds properly as herds spread across the southern plains and daily positions shift.

For river crossings in the Mara, 5–7 nights is the sweet spot. Crossings don't happen on demand. You may wait two days and then witness three in an afternoon. The camps that position you closest to the known crossing points reduce that waiting time significantly.

If you're combining locations, for example, Northern Serengeti in July or Masai Mara in September, build in a travel day between each and aim for 5 nights per location. A 10–12-night trip is the most common structure for clients who want genuine depth rather than a tick-box experience.

A Simple Month-by-Month Snapshot

• Jan to Mar: South for calving. Predator action, open views, long mornings. Ubuntu and Olakira in the south, Dunia as a central complement. 

• Apr to early Jun: Trek north and the rut. Central and west with low-season pricing and fewer vehicles. First Grumeti crossings come late May into June. Think Dunia, plus Usawa Western Corridor, Mila Tented Camp, and Simbavati Musabi Plains.

Travelling in Africa will always be an unforgettable experience; taking good photographic equipment to capture every aspect of your journey, from the rich birdlife to magnificent landscapes, is essential.

The choice of locations is vast: dense rainforests, deserts of rolling red or golden dunes, canyons, highlands, massive wetlands, and open savannah plains stretching to the horizon. Each of these locations will present its own particular birdlife treasures.

Birding in Africa for Beginners and Experts

This endeavour is not only reserved for experts but can be equally enjoyed by novice birders of all ages. I started very young and quickly learned to identify basic features of a bird that led to faster identification. Soon, I was able to turn to the right pages in my bird books and find my bird in minutes. The joy of hearing a birdcall and knowing who sings brings an element of satisfaction to your journey; you feel better connected to and informed of the avian world around us.

The excitement around identifying a new species is like treasure hunting. However you choose to record, writing lists in a journal or capturing new finds in a database, a sense of pride soon develops as you tick off yet another bird in yet another country or environment.

It is wise to start recording from the start to facilitate order in your search. It won’t take long before you have to prove your find. Be sure to have good records easily available, and backup from photographs, no matter how hurriedly taken, will endorse your find without further doubt.

You may sense the element of competition beginning to enter. And there will be competition, argument, and debate: novices, genuine experts, and know-it-alls abound. But you can set your own benchmarks and be satisfied with your own identification skills. Sometimes you may be surprised and find a certain species where it is not supposed to be. This information is valuable and will enable you to make a contribution to the various ornithological institutions wherever you live or travel.

You will be amazed at the expertise of really good birders. They go alone or in groups in search of very specific species of birds, and they know exactly where to look, what time of day to set out, and the exact habitat of that bird. Their ability to swing a camera into action and take the perfect shot without scaring off the bird is also impressive. But it takes interest, time, dedication, study, and endurance to achieve these levels. Some enthusiasts will travel to far-flung places like Siberia to find some lark that just has to be ticked off the list.

How to Start Birding in Africa

A good starting point is to arm yourself with the right books to help you identify the species in the regions you wish to visit, or simply where you live.

Some birder bibles are Roberts Bird Books, Sasol Birds of Southern Africa, and Birds of East Africa, as good examples.

There are many other great books, not as well-known as these, but which provide condensed information about the birds to be found in the region you are going to. For example: Kruger Birds, for South Africa’s Kruger Park birdlife, Kgalagadi self-drive birds, for birds of the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, situated in the southern Kalahari Desert straddling the borders of South Africa and Botswana. These kinds of books are particularly useful to novice birders; they target specific species to be found in those regions or parks, which makes it easier to identify what you spotted.

Technical support around birding is easily available today. All these books have easily downloadable Excel checklists. This is a good way to begin, as you record your finds, the regions in which you found them, or the species.

Gaining Experience

The more you step out and follow this passion, the sooner you will learn. It did not take the experts a few days or months to acquire the knowledge they have today.  Some of the most famous have dedicated a lifetime to their quest to watch, record, and identify the birds around us.

Pay particular attention to the forewords or introduction sections in the books you buy. Most of them will help you to identify groups of birds by silhouette. This is important because once you grasp the fine art of birding, you will flick to the page on Barbets or Cranes and quickly find your bird.

Other important tips include noticing details like the colour of the beak and legs. Are they the same colour or different? The bird’s call, the way it flies or hops on the ground, these factors enable quick and efficient identification.

 Another way to improve your identification skills is with mobile apps, such as Merlin Bird ID, BirdNET, Birdpro and… wait for it… Chirpomatic! These apps are ideal as you can record the birdcall and replay it for identification, or simply let the app hear the call and identify the bird in real time.

Some avid ornithologists may frown on this means of identification, but it’s a quick way to identify your bird and enhance your knowledge.  As always with apps, some fact-checking is advised to be certain of your find.

Where and how to search

Birding can soon become a way of life. You collect books, gear, and a partner or friends to join you on an adventure into the wilds at every opportunity. Such is the beauty of this wondrous occupation. Birding combines friendship, competition, purpose, photography, the outdoors, Nature, and many other factors, rewarding for mind, body, and spirit.

Wild places like nature reserves, conservancies, game parks, bird or game sanctuaries, coastlines, lagoons, lakes, and rivers are all good places to look for birds. The list of various habitats is endless, all rich in birds especially suited to their specific environment.

Before we launch Part II of this series, we would like to suggest some locations. 

Beginning in South Africa, the species count exceeds 870 birds - the highest number of endemic species and near-endemic birds in Africa, with over 140 species in these categories. The region hosts a mix of resident birds, Palearctic migrants, and intra-African migrants. Many species are concentrated in such unique biomes as those mentioned above.

There are over 300 game and nature reserves in South Africa. And that excludes simple, closer locations like your local park or green belts, hiking trails, or your own garden.

To fire your enthusiasm for this wonderful recreational activity, we’re going to target some iconic Southern and East African species, where to find them, and why they are mentioned.  We will break this down into 7 groups: Raptors (Birds of Prey), Seed-Eaters, Fruit-Eaters (Frugivores), Insectivores and Specialised Feeders, Passerines (Perching Birds), Water birds and Waders, Ground-dwelling birds, Owls and Nightjars.

Raptors

The African fish eagle is found at large bodies of open water with an abundant food supply in sub-Saharan Africa. It is the national bird of Malawi, Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe. This large brown and white eagle lives off both fresh and saltwater fish found in the bushveld and coastal lagoons and estuaries.

It weighs around 3 kg, has a wingspan of 2m, can haul a fish weighing 2 kg out of the water, and fly with it back to its nest, usually in a large tree near the water’s edge.

This bird is known for its iconic, haunting call, often described as the “sound of Africa”, or the “sound of the wilderness” - a symbolic soundtrack to the African landscape. It is a distinctive, loud, and resonant yelping cry that carries over long distances, serving as a powerful territorial display. It also presents one of the best challenges to those avid birders who come armed with professional cameras and large lenses. The perfect shot, and a very difficult one to capture, is the one when the eagle snatches its prey from the water.

Seed-eaters

Our bird of choice here is the masked weaver, a resident species found throughout Southern Africa.

The breeding male has a black face mask with a narrow black band on the forehead above the bill and a startlingly bright yellow body. The species is an abundant resident throughout the open savannah and semi-arid areas, nesting colonially above water or in large trees. This bird will be easy to find, almost always near water.

Weaver birds are the only birds documented with the ability to tie knots. The males spend the breeding season in full plumage, making one nest after another from intricately woven reed, grass, or palm frond strips to impress the females. If the nest doesn’t meet her requirements, she will then tear it apart, and the male starts all over again.

These are pretty, busy little birds, and always entertaining to watch.

Fruit-eaters

Here, we have to choose two birds in particular: The Knysna turaco and the eastern plantain-eater. 

The Knysna turaco is found in the evergreen forests of southern and eastern South Africa and Eswatini. The pure beauty of this bird earned it a perch on the list. The small but thick orange-red bill and a white line just under the eye contrast with the mainly green plumage. It has a tall green crest, tipped with white. The eye is brown and the eye-ring deep red. In flight, the Knysna turaco shows conspicuous crimson primary flight feathers.

The eastern plantain-eater is a large, loud, grey turaco species common in Uganda’s savanna, woodlands, and gardens. Recognizable by its long tail, bushy crest, and yellowish bill, this bird is frequently seen in small groups, particularly around Lake Victoria. I like to call this one the “clown of the forest”.

Insectivores and Specialized Feeders

The choice here between bee-eaters, rollers, hornbills, hoopoes, and kingfishers is the most difficult. Here we have a combination of beauty, cunning, speed, and unusual behaviour such as rolling.

I chose the lilac-breasted roller.

This bird is widely distributed in southern and eastern Africa. It prefers open woodlands and savanna and can be found in all its glory perched high up on a branch or pole, surveying the area for insects and small amphibians. The variety of different colours this bird displays earned it its place on the list. From the lilac breast, cheeks, and ear coverts to the white and olive crest of the head to brilliant azure, black, and dark purple blue of its wings, this specimen wins the beauty contest!

Pairs are very protective of their nest, and one will fly in a rolling pattern as a territorial display against intruders. During courtship, a lilac-breasted roller will fly upwards and then tip forward with the wings closed before flapping to gain speed towards the ground. While levelling out at the highest speed, the bird will roll to the left and right a few times, uttering a harsh, raucous cry before swooping up again.

Passerines (Perching Birds)

Without doubt, seeing a crimson-breasted shrike for the first time is simply breathtaking. The striking combination of the black and white upper parts and bright scarlet breast is remarkable, particularly when it is found in dry thorn bush areas in thickets and riparian scrub. It comes as quite a surprise to find such a beautiful bird in such drab surroundings. These are the gems of birding in Africa.

Water Birds and Waders

The shoebill, also known as the whale-headed stork, whalebill, and shoe-billed stork, is a large, long-legged wading bird. Its name derives from its enormous, shoe-shaped bill. It has been placed more in the gene camp along with pelicans and herons than storks. It can be found in tropical East Africa in large swamps from South Sudan to the swamps and marshlands of Southern Africa.

It wins the wader prize for being ugly, with its slate grey colouring, stock-still gaze, and quick, violent attacks on the prey that it swallows whole with its big ungainly bill. But due to its unusual conformation and behaviour, it is regarded as one of the five most desirable birds in Africa by birdwatchers.

Ground Dwelling Birds

The male kori bustard is believed to be the heaviest living animal capable of flight.  This is hard to believe considering they can weigh up to 18 kg and have a wingspan of 2,75m! It is a ground-dwelling species found in open grassy dry areas, high plateaus, and arid scrublands. Standing between 1,2 and 1,5m tall, it is always a delight to spot one of these huge birds, especially when it takes flight. It takes off with a slow, laborious, and heavy-winged, airplane-like take-off. They typically require a running start to get airborne, though they can rise from a standing position if danger threatens.

This species is prominent in many native African cultures due to its imposing, impressive size, spectacular displays by adult males, or the cryptic nature of the nesting female. They feature in the songs and dances of the San people of Botswana, and paintings of these bustards feature in ancient San rock art.

Night Jars and Owls

There are many species of owls and nightjars in Africa that are fascinating due to their nighttime activities. Pel’s fishing owl is one of the largest owl species in the world and ranks fifth-heaviest on average. Its size, call, colouration, and fishing habits make it an irresistible choice. It is found throughout a large part of sub-Saharan Africa, and due to its diet, it is not usually found in the drier parts of the continent. Adults are a rich ginger-rufous colour with dense dark bars to the upperparts and scaling to the underparts. The feathers around the head are loose and long, giving the head a shaggy appearance or “bedhead” look. The song of the male Pel’s fishing owl is a deep, sonorous, horn-like boom, first a single and then a higher pitch. The male also utters a ringed hoot, much higher-pitched than those of most eagle-owls, followed by a deep, soft grunt.

The tiger fish has a streamlined silver body with black stripes running from head to tail. The tail and fins are an unmistakable bright reddish orange colour. The jaws are very bony and have interlocking, dagger-like teeth. It is this bony jaw that leads to many a fish getting away. The mistake anglers often make after the initial attack on the bait is to forget to strike to really set the hook in the bony jaw, thinking that the violent attack was enough to hook any fish. This can be the case with many other fresh or saltwater fish species, but not this one?

Tiger Fish

Tiger fish are found in many rivers and lakes on the continent of Africa. The Hydrocynus Vittatus species is the most widespread and is commonly found in the southern reaches of the Okavango Delta and the Zambezi River and also in the two largest lakes along the Zambezi River, Lake Kariba which borders Zimbabwe and Zambia, Cabora Bassa in Mozambique, and finally down to Jozini Dam in South Africa.

The Goliath Tiger Fish

There is one last twist to the tale of this magnificent freshwater game fish and that is there is a larger member of the family; Hydrocynus goliath. Believe it or not, this is a beast of a fish found in the Congo River Systems and Lake Tanganyika. The largest one on record is said to have weighed 70kgs (154lbs). Horrifying stories from locals living in these regions talk about injuries sustained from this massive fish that can often be found in very shallow water searching for its prey. And even stories of disappearing children can be heard. But, exaggerations can be granted if you are ever lucky enough to witness 70kgs of brute force and gnashing teeth. Fishing the Congo River would have its challenges too and best left to the intrepid likes of Jeremy Wade and his series; River Monsters.

Where and When to Go Tiger Fishing in Africa

Anglers in pursuit of this fish will soon learn that finding the right fishing spots in Africa often takes one to some of the most amazing places on earth. The Okavango Delta is a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its seasonal flooding that turns arid plains into a lush oasis. This inland delta is so large that it can be seen clearly from space. It features the Big 5 of Africa’s wildlife and over 500 species of birds. Truly a remarkable destination just to visit let alone gliding along a clear lagoon with a fishing rod in hand.

The great Zambezi River is Africa’s fourth largest river flowing approximately 2,700km from north-western Zambia through six countries (Angola, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique). The river flows eastwards across the continent. The Zambezi runs over the Victoria Falls, located on the Zimbabwe-Zambia border and is the world’s largest curtain of falling water, plunging over 100 meters.

These incredible locations almost make the fishing of secondary importance, with many well run and equipped lodges and camps dotted all over these regions to choose from. 

Of course, there are many more smaller rivers and water ways where one can catch tiger fish but, these regions given above are broad strokes of the brush and probably the most decent to target the species. 

The Chobe River in northern Botswana is another good location. With many great camps and lodges along its banks as well as fantastic game parks to visit too like Chobe National Park and the most magnificent but lesser-known Chobe Forest Reserve.

I am talking from my own personal experience when I caught my largest tiger fish in this river when I was ten years old – which weighed in at 5kgs. In those days the spoons or lures were silver, about the size of a shoehorn, with a hook that must have measured 14/0. Or maybe that was what I thought the size of the lure was at that young age! 

The best time of the year for tiger fish is August. But, September to April is also good fishing season in the southern hemisphere.

What Equipment to take?

There are two ways to target tiger fish. Either conventional fishing rods and lures/hooks for bait or fly fishing. 

Most lodges in tiger fishing areas carry the equipment necessary to catch tiger fish. Eliminating the need for a traveller to bring loads of equipment along.  

However, for the professional fisherman, you are most welcome to bring you own kit along. If you know what you are doing or wish to receive concise advice on what to bring, NOMARA Africa Travel, in conjunction with our Lodge and Camp partners will work out a list that will not be difficult to bring along. Most of us as professional anglers will travel with 3 or 4-piece rods carried in a tube and a small kit bag of lures and hooks. Nothing too onerous. 

Let’s split this into the two types of fishing, conventional and fly fishing and then tackle some of the lures required. 

Conventional Fishing:

Key features of a good tiger fishing casting rod 

• Action: Fast action is crucial to handle the hard-hitting strikes and the bony mouth of the fish. 

• Power: Medium-heavy to Extra Heavy (MH-XH) is required to fight the fish in fast currents or around structure like rocks or sunken trees. 

• Construction: High-quality graphite or carbon composites (24-30 ton) are used for strength and sensitivity. 

• Length: 7ft to 7’4” is standard for a good balance between casting distance and control. 

• Components: Braid-ready, high-quality guides (like Fuji) are essential for withstanding the pressure. 

• Considerations: Portability: 3 or 4-piece rods usually break down into sections around 70-85cm, often supplied with a protective travel case. 

Boat rods can or should be slightly shorter, between 6-7ft, medium-heavy action (spinning or bait caster), (24-30 ton) and capable of handling 30-50lb braid, matched with a 30-50lb fluorocarbon leader and steel wire traces to prevent bite-offs. 

Reel pairing should be 3000 to 5000 size reels for spinning, or strong bait casting reels. A bait caster reel is a good asset to allow for free spooling of bait before striking.

What lures/bait to use for conventional gear:

Spoons: Copper or silver spoons, like the Effzett are highly effective; adding a fillet or replacing treble hooks with single hooks improves performance. 

• Spinners: Mepps (Aglia or Black Fury) in sizes 3 – 5 are classic choices. (Also enjoyed by other fish such Bream) 

• Particularly in darker colours for murky waters.  

• Jigs: Afri Jigs (Heavy flies cast with spinning gear) in black/purple or other dark colours; are extremely popular and versatile. 

• Surface lures: Heddon Zara Spooks, Super Spooks and other poppers/walkers create explosive top-water action, ideal for early mornings or overcast days. 

• Soft Plastics: Plastic frogs like Keitech Noisy Flappers or jigheads can be effective but, can get torn up quite quickly.  

• And don’t forget the wire trace. 25lb should do.

Fly Fishing for Tiger Fish

To fly fish for tiger fish, you need a robust 8 – 9 weight rod, a quality reel with a strong drag, and wire-trace-equipped streamers (size no. 1 – 2/0) – tip: go for even more rod weight – like 9 to11 weight. 

A floating line or dry line can be used for the shallows or surface-level fishing. Great for using poppers early and late afternoon.  An intermediate line is also good for all-around use. 

A fast-sinking line is good for deep or fast flowing water. 

For wire streamers, Clouser Minnows or Brush Flies are very effective. The best colours for streamers are purple, black, orange, red and silver.

Adventure always awaits in Africa

In more recent years, during my trip across Africa (2012/13), we put our 2-man inflatable into the Chobe River and set off on a fishing expedition with a guide. We trolled up and down the river without much success save for many small fish which were in abundance. So, our guide said, let us cross the border into Namibia and try their rivers. He told us to bring our passports, and we originally thought this may be for fishing inspector reasons. 

He took us to a “water border post” between Botswana and Namibia. We stepped ashore on what looked like a small island, walked a few meters to the border post office, had our passports stamped and launched our small boat again and headed into Namibian waters. Like every fisherman, the waters on the other side, in another country, a different river; are always going to be where the big fish lurk. 

In this case, the fisherman’s “greener grass” philosophy was indeed correct. We caught some really decent tiger fish in nice deep channels. However, the channels were overgrown with giant papyrus and reeds, and one couldn’t help expecting a hippo or huge crocodile to erupt from these dense islands in the channel. It was great fishing, but we did realise that we were in dangerous waters.

Lower Zambezi – The stretch of river between Kariba and Cobora Bassa Dams

The lower Zambezi is especially good for tiger fishing. Chongwe Tented Camp in Zambia is an ideal location, and the camp provides fishing equipment, boats and guides. For the very avid fisherman, extended fishing expeditions can also be arranged from Chongwe. 

Staying in the same lower Zambezi region in Zambia, other camps we are confident in their tiger fishing are Chiawa Camp and Lolebezi. This is a strictly catch-and-release zone. 

Still on the same stretch of river but, on the south bank of the Zambezi in Zimbabwe, you have Ruchomechi Camp and Little Ruchomechi in Mana Pools National Park. This is one of the most spectacular game parks in Zimbabwe. I personally caught and released some decent tiger fish here as well as bream directly from the banks of the Zambezi, using fish fillets for bait. 

Chikwenya Tented Camp, located on a private concession on the eastern boundary of Mana Pools National Park offers exceptional tiger fishing in the most incredible African bush setting. Both private and exclusive.

Above Victoria Falls

We started in the centre of the tiger fishing zone on the Zambezi River. Now we head west to the section of the river above the mighty Victoria Falls. This is a great location, as a trip to the falls is a short distance away from some of our tried and tested camps on the Zambezi. 

On the Zambia side there are two special camps in the Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park; Thorntree River Lodge and Toka Leya. These two options cannot be emphasised enough as this is truly a case of location, location, location; right next door to one of the seven wonders of the world.

Lake Kariba

Tiger fishing can be enjoyed from one end of Lake Kariba to the other. NOMARA Africa Travel’s favourite camp and lodge on the lake are; Bumi Hills Safari Lodge and Changa Safari Camp.

Here fishing can be done from the jetty of a camp, from a boat or from the shores of a channel.

  This depends on the sleepout. Some have full bathrooms with running water and a flushing toilet. Some have a full shower and bathroom on site. Others have a practical toilet setup incorporated into the structure. We guide you to the right option based on your comfort level.

• What happens if it rains?

  Operators make conservative decisions around weather. Some sleepouts offer both rooftop sleeping and sheltered indoor sleeping. If conditions are not suitable, the experience is usually rescheduled or replaced.

Where to find mountain gorillas 

Mountain gorillas live in misty, high-altitude forests in East-Central Africa, in just two main pockets. One is the Virunga Mountains, spanning Rwanda, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The other is Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, linked to the Sarambwe Nature Reserve across the border. These are cool, dense landscapes of bamboo, vines and montane forest, where cloud clings to the canopy and the air feels several degrees colder than you expect, especially in the early morning. 

Mountain gorillas

Seeing wildlife in Africa is always rewarding, but gorillas land differently. Part of it is familiarity. Their hands, their eyes, the way a family moves together, all of it feels strangely close. They have complex social bonds, clear leadership, tender mother and infant relationships, and a calm intelligence that you sense even in a quiet moment. Meeting them in the wild is not only a sighting, it is a shared space, and that is why it can feel so profound. 

A few practical facts help set the scene before you step into the forest. Mountain gorillas are one of two subspecies of eastern gorillas. They are larger and hairier than lowland gorillas, built for colder elevations. Adult males, known as silverbacks, earn the name from the pale saddle of hair that develops across the back as they mature. Their size is impressive, but it is the mix of strength and restraint that lingers in your memory, especially when a silverback chooses to simply watch, rather than react. 

Then there is the setting itself. Bwindi and the Virungas have an otherworldly feel, layers of green, dripping leaves, mossed trunks and deep undergrowth, with light filtering in like it is passing through smoke. The forest is ancient, and you feel that age in the silence between bird calls.

Lowland gorillas

Lowland gorillas, both western and eastern, live in warmer, lower elevation forests, with different habitats, different densities, and different trekking experiences. Western lowland gorillas range across parts of Central Africa, including the Republic of Congo, Gabon, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Equatorial Guinea and sections of Angola and the DRC. Eastern lowland gorillas, also known as Grauer’s gorillas, are found in the eastern DRC.  

Our personal experience begins here

We had never seen gorillas in the wild, so we honestly did not know what was waiting for us. The lead up alone felt like a hint of the scale of the day ahead, muddy tracks climbing into fog, waterfalls cutting across the road, cliff edges, small villages, and sudden openings where you could look back over hills that seemed to roll forever. Nothing you read properly prepares you for the environment you enter. 

Here is how we navigated this chapter of our journey in Africa, and what we learned along the way. 

We chose Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in Uganda for our gorilla trekking experience because we were already travelling through Uganda during an across Africa trip. It turned out to be an excellent decision. Bwindi protects a significant portion of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas, with a number of habituated groups, and the regulations around trekking help keep the encounters respectful and controlled. 

Before Bwindi, Uganda had already surprised us, in the best way. We had been fishing for giant Nile perch in the churning pools below Murchison Falls, exploring Queen Elizabeth National Park in search of the Ugandan kob, and enjoying some of the best birding we have ever experienced. That is a story for another day, but it matters because Uganda is not a one moment destination. It is layered, scenic, and full of wildlife beyond the headline experiences.

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park 

Bwindi sits in southwestern Uganda and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is famous for its critically endangered mountain gorillas, and also for its biodiversity, with primates, birds and butterflies thriving in the forest. Gorilla trekking here is tightly regulated, which means permits, set group sizes, clear rules, and rangers who take the welfare of the gorillas seriously.

Gorilla trekking permits and etiquette

Your permit controls almost everything about the day, including the sector, start time and group size. Once you reach the gorillas, the viewing time is limited, usually around an hour, and that time goes quickly. Expect clear guidance on distance, voice level and photography. No flash, no sudden movements, and if you are feeling unwell, you should not trek. This is not theatre, it is conservation, and the small rules are what protect the gorillas and keep trekking possible. 

Good preparation also makes the trek easier. Long trousers, long sleeves, gloves for grabbing nettle covered plants, waterproof boots with grip, and a rain jacket are the basics. A porter can also make a big difference, not only for comfort on steep sections, but as a direct way to support local communities. 

Best time for gorilla trekking in Uganda

Bwindi is a year-round destination, but conditions change with rains. In the drier months the trails are less slippery, and the walking can feel easier. In wetter periods the forest is at its most lush, but you should expect mud, slick roots, and the possibility of a downpour if morning begins bright. Either way, start early, pack a dry bag for your camera, and allow time to slow down and enjoy the forest itself. The trek is only one part of the story, the atmosphere is the other.

Getting there

Getting up into the misty heights where gorillas live is part of the adventure. If there was ever true 4x4 territory, this is it. This was the first place we had to use low range in first gear, and we meant it. The roads wind up mountainsides through hairpin bends, past waterfalls, and across stretches where the track becomes a shallow river. Even the buses somehow appear, overloaded, inching their way up and down with a determination that you can only admire. 

The mud tells stories too, deep ruts left by vehicles that have slid, spun, reversed and tried again. Around one bend we met a set of tracks so chewed up you could almost picture the struggle that created them. Low range got us through the worst of it, climbing like a tractor. It was challenging enough that we barely filmed anything; it took two of us to navigate. My co-pilot, my 22-year-old son, folded the mirrors in to squeeze between rock walls on one side and a steep drop on the other, calling directions as we edged through, centimeter by centimeter. Then there were oncoming vehicles, and the real test began, because two cars could not pass on those narrow tracks and reversing was almost impossible. Somehow, we did it. It is the way of Africa. 

There are easier ways. The simplest route is to fly into Kihihi or Kisoro, both with connections from Entebbe, then drive on through rolling hills and rich green valleys to reach your lodge. It is a beautiful approach, with village life along the roadside and, on clear days, views that stretch towards the Virunga range. 

For travelers who enjoy the road, the drive from Entebbe can take 7 to 9 hours depending on the sector you are staying in. You pass tea plantations, busy trading centers, and the rising terrain of the Kigezi Highlands. It is long, but it can be deeply scenic, and it gives you a more authentic sense of Uganda’s landscapes. 

After our own experience, our advice is simple. Work with experts when you plan this sort of expedition. The route is only one piece. The right sector, the right lodge, permit logistics, timing, and small details like what to wear and what to pack can make the day feel smooth, rather than stressful. We had a good experience, but there are simpler and wiser ways to do it, and far better accommodation options today than were available when we travelled through.

Accommodation

Our accommodation was comfortable, but simple. The main thing to remember is that it is cold up there. Choosing where to stay deserves attention, especially if you want warmth and ease after a trek. Fireplaces in rooms or shared spaces are a genuine luxury. If you do not have that, pack warm layers, a rain jacket, and something cozy for evenings. 

Today, Bwindi has a wonderful range of forest lodges and camps across the different sectors. Luxury tented camps and elegant chalets with private verandas offer sweeping views over the canopy. The gorilla trekking experience

We trekked in the Ruhija sector of Bwindi, in the eastern part of the park. At the time, this area had a small number of gorilla families, including habituated groups such as Bitukura and Oruzongo. A smaller number of groups in the sector can mean less visitor traffic, which can make the experience feel calmer and more intimate, depending on permit availability and daily allocations. 

Armed with our permits, we met early at the Ruhija park office. The briefing is important. The guides explain what to expect, what to do when you reach the gorillas, how to behave, and why the rules matter. After that, the trekking groups split. Our group headed out in search of the Bitukura family, while the other group went looking for Oruzongo. 

One practical tip that is worth repeating, tuck your trousers into your socks. Safari ants are not a myth. We followed the advice. One traveler in shorts did not, and learned the lesson quickly, hopping and howling as the ants swarmed his ankles. If memory serves, he turned back. It is an expensive way to learn about proper clothing, and it is avoidable. Today, many lodges also keep gaiters and basic gear on hand, but you still want to arrive prepared. 

The guides generally know where the gorilla families are, in broad terms, but the forest decides how long you walk. Some treks take an hour. Others take most of a day. That unpredictability is part of what makes the experience feel real, not staged. 

For many people, the emotional build-up starts the moment you step into the jungle. You think about the hike, about the terrain, about the possibility of rain, and about the quiet rules around keeping distance. You also wonder how you will feel when you see them, and whether you will. There is a lot going through your mind as the first leaves close in behind you. 

The forest is unforgettable. The air is humid and still, broken by a soft rustle, the distant call of a turaco, the snap of a branch somewhere ahead. You walk through giant ferns and tangled vines, past moss-coated trunks and damp leaf litter that smells rich and earthy. It is a place that pulls you into the moment, step by step. 

We set off and struggled to keep pace with our guide, who moved with easy confidence. We slipped down steep sections into a small valley, hands finding branches for balance, boots sliding in the mud. Then, in less than an hour, luck was on our side, we found the family. 

They were spread across the valley floor and into low trees, feeding quietly, some perched impossibly high on narrow branches, calmly munching leaves and fruit. How they balanced without snapping the branches, I still do not know. 

They were aware of us, but they did not stop feeding. There were mothers, solid and steady, and infants of different sizes, curious and quick. There were perhaps ten or so in view, but at first we did not see the silverback. 

We sat down quietly, settled into the undergrowth, and waited in their world. 

And then the silverback arrived, suddenly, without drama, as if he had simply decided it was time to confirm who was in charge. He looked us over, then lowered himself into the soft valley floor. The smell was unmistakable, musky, earthy, and very real, with midges and flies hovering around him. It was not romantic. It was wild. 

With the silverback present, the family felt complete. This is where the encounter becomes something more than a sighting. You start noticing behaviors that feel familiar. Mothers gently shepherding infants away if they wandered too close. Youngsters watching you with open curiosity. The silverback resting, alert, eyes tracking everything with a calm authority. He seemed to be thinking, measuring, deciding that we were not a threat. 

It is difficult to explain, but it can feel like a small divide is crossed. You are aware of how different you are, and yet how much overlaps in simple social behavior. Their intelligence is not a theory, you see it in their eyes, their composure, their choices. That is a big part of the gorilla magic. 

Another thing we loved is that the encounter gives you time. In many wildlife moments you catch a glimpse, then the animal disappears. With gorillas, you often have a full hour once you reach them. It means you can take photographs and video, not for proof, but to bring the memory home, the expressions, the quiet moments, the tiny interactions within the family. 

As the experience concluded

Gorilla trekking is worth doing if it has ever been on your list. The effort, the permits, the travel, the early start, it all fades the moment you are sitting in the forest, sharing a respectful hour with a gorilla family. 

We also found Uganda to be a country of warm, friendly people, generous with directions, help, and smiles. Beyond the gorillas, the landscapes are exceptional, mountains, valleys, lakes, and wide skies. We will not forget the sight of farmers planting high on steep slopes in careful rows, or the crisp vegetables and fresh produce that come from those highlands. 

Uganda is full of treasures, and yes, the roads can be challenging, but the rewards are enormous. 

As we later heard, the family we visited went through changes in leadership, with one silverback retiring and another taking over, then a tragic accident reshaping the group again. It is a reminder that these are not characters in a story, they are wild animals living wild lives, and conservation is never a finished job. 

Every new birth is a celebration.

What does a typical safari day look like?

Most people picture two game drives a day, one in the morning and one in the late afternoon, with a break in between. That pattern exists for a reason. Early mornings are cool and animated, with big cats moving before the heat and antelope shaking off sleep. Late afternoons cool again and slip into dusk, and the evening ends with a cold drink in a beautiful spot as the first stars appear. Drives usually last about three hours, sometimes longer depending on the action. 

There is more. In many regions a full day out makes sense. On the Serengeti plains you might head out with breakfast and lunch packed, cross a wide distance, and sit quietly for an hour while a cheetah stalks, waits, and finally commits. In northern Botswana a rising flood can make the land feel like an archipelago.   For peak months, plan 12 months ahead. Shoulder and green seasons offer more flexibility and excellent value with bookings anywhere from 3-6 months prior. Gorilla permits often need 6 to 12 months.

  Not at all. Expect lush scenes, young animals, great birding, dramatic skies, and fewer vehicles. Some remote bush camps may pause, so we place you where conditions are best for your dates.

• How connected will I be?

  Many camps have Wi-Fi in main areas. Remote locations can be slower or offline at times. Guides carry radios and satellite phones for operations and safety. Most guests enjoy the partial digital break.

• Can Children go on a safari ?

  Yes. We have handpicked lodges and camps that cater specifically for family-friendly safari experiences. This includes kids friendly game drives, dedicated kids camp activities, including nature walks, baking and cooking with camp chefs, spoor casting, arts and crafts, kids guiding certificates, tribesmen spear making, and many other fun activities. Family friendly safaris are important to us at NOMARA, tried and tested given our own young families! Of course, age restrictions may apply to certain activities.  

• Do I need vaccinations or malaria tablets?

  Vaccinations may be required depending on your destination and can include Yellow Fever, Typhoid, Hepatitis A and B, and routine vaccines. Check with the embassy of your destination country and visit a local travel clinic or healthcare provider for the right advice before you travel.

  Many safari destinations are also in malaria zones. We can share guidance on malaria zones across NOMARA destinations, but the decision on preventive measures is between you and your healthcare provider. All our partner locations have mosquito nets and insect repellent, and modern insect repellent wrist bands combined with light, covering clothing provide strong additional protection.

Start with a simple system 

Think in layers and neutrals, not in single outfits. Dawn can be crisp, midday warm, evening cool again. A few light pieces that stack quickly will carry you from the first drive to dinner without fuss. The happy bonus, most of the luxury camps we choose offer same-day laundry, weather permitting, so you can pack fewer pieces you truly like and rotate them.

Colours and fabrics that belong in the bush

Earth and natural tones blend with the landscape, hide dust, and help you avoid standing out on game drives, walks, and community visits. Think olive, tan, stone, brown. Avoid bright white, heavy black, strong logos, and high-contrast patterns. In a few woodland areas (for example, parts of Tarangire or Ruaha) solid black and royal blue can attract tsetse flies, so stick with neutrals there. 

Pick quick-dry travel fabrics and cotton blends that feel good against skin. Linen is lovely for camp and evenings, less so for surprise showers. Zip-off trousers and roll-tab sleeves make adjustments easy as temperatures swing through the day.

What to wear, season by season

Southern Africa winter, roughly May to August 
Crisp at dawn and after dark, warm by lunchtime. You will start bundled up, then peel down to a T-shirt late morning. A light puffer or windproof, beanie, buff, and thin gloves are worth their space. 

Southern Africa summer, roughly September to April 
Warm to hot. Expect afternoon showers in some regions, dramatic clouds, and green grass. A thin waterproof or light shell helps, and breathable, quick-dry layers keep you comfortable. 

East Africa most of the year 
Stable temperatures with short rains around November and long rains around March to May. Pack a light layer for dawn, breathable shirts for midday, and a thin waterproof if you travel in the rains.  

Headwear and footwear that earn their place

Hats 
A wide-brim hat with a chin strap is a keeper. Open vehicles catch the wind, and the strap saves you from watching your hat roll down a termite mound. A soft cap makes a good backup. Add a beanie for cold mornings and balloon launches. 

Shoes 
Closed-toe walking shoes or light hikers with decent tread work for drives and short guided walks. Wear them in before you fly. Pack sandals for camp, pool time, or beach add-ons. Two or three pairs of good socks, merino if you have them, keep feet happy.

Camera gear, without the kitchen sink

You don’t need a suitcase of lenses to make strong images. You do need a simple plan. 

• Bodies and lenses 
  A mirrorless or DSLR with a mid-range telephoto is a workhorse. Many guests like a 70–200 mm for portraits and a 100–400 mm (or similar) for reach. Phone shooters do well too with a small grip for stability. 

• Support and dust care 
  A small beanbag or a rolled jacket steadies your lens on the vehicle rail. Pack a rocket blower, microfiber cloth, and a tiny brush. A lightweight dry bag or zip pouch protects cameras in dusty or showery moments. 

• Power and storage 
  Two batteries per body, a fast charger, and memory to spare. Some vehicles have charging points, but assume you’ll top up in your room. If you edit, bring a card reader and a small SSD. 

• Drones 
  Most parks and conservancies ban the use of drones. We suggest leaving all drones at home.

Packing for children 

Kids love safari when they feel part of it. Pack lightweight layers they already enjoy wearing, a sun hat with a strap, breathable long sleeves, and comfy closed shoes. Add a tiny headlamp, a small notebook, and child-sized binoculars so they can join the spotting. Quiet midday activities help, like cards or pencils. 

Drive durations and mealtimes can usually be adjusted by the lodge guiding team within park rules. Share your family’s rhythm when booking and the team on the ground will shape days that feel natural for you.

Clothing for specific experiences

Game drives 
Layers, hat, sunglasses, closed shoes. Long sleeves for sun. A buff helps on windy, dusty days. 

Guided bush walks 
Neutral long trousers, long sleeves, sturdy closed shoes, hat. Bring as little as possible. Your guide will brief spacing, wind, and pace. 

Boating, canoeing, mokoro 
Quick-dry shorts or trousers, light shirt, hat with strap, a thin layer for the breeze. Polarized sunglasses help you read water. 

Ballooning 
Warm layers at dawn, beanie or hat, closed shoes. After landing, enjoy a bush breakfast before returning to camp. 

Sleepouts and star beds 
Warm night layers even in summer. Socks and a light fleece make the difference as the air cools. 

Culture with care 
Comfortable, modest clothing. Cover shoulders and knees where requested. Your guide leads etiquette, you enjoy the time. 

Coastal add-ons

Bags, dimensions, and bush flights

Light aircraft keep you close to wild places, and they limit what you can bring. Most bush flights require soft-sided luggage and set modest weight limits. Wheels and rigid frames are often restricted. Pilots need accurate weights to load safely, so weigh your bag before you leave home. 

Typical allowances and size guidance 

• Weight: often 33–44 lb per person (15–20 kg), depending on route and operator 

• Main duffel dimensions: commonly around 24 × 12 × 10 in or smaller (61 × 30 × 25 cm), with soft sides so it can flex in the hold 

• Linear size reference: up to about 62 in total (158 cm) on some routes

What works best 
A soft cotton-canvas duffel that is water-resistant, with strong zips and easy lift points. Use packing cubes so clothing does not collapse into a nest, and a small dry bag for passports and electronics during rainy transfers.

Expect charging to be available in rooms or main areas. Expect “bush Wi-Fi” to be enough for messages and email, not heavy uploads.

A few smart habits

Pack once, then remove one outfit. Laundry at most of our selected camps has you covered.

How this looks on a real day

Picture an early start in the Linyanti or the Lower Zambezi. You zip a base layer under a fleece, add a windproof, tuck thin gloves in a pocket, and walk to the vehicle with your daypack and camera. The first hour is crisp and quiet. Coffee tastes better than it should. By mid-morning the jacket is off, hat on, and you settle into an unhurried sighting as elephants turn a waterhole into a theatre. Lunch back in camp is light and easy. Sandals replace shoes. Another, you could stand beneath a misty skyline in Rwanda after meeting a family of mountain gorillas. In July you may find yourself beside the Mara River as wildebeest time their crossing. In January you might walk across Ndutu’s short grass while new calves learn to stand. Different places peak at different times, and that is exactly why there is always a place to go.

Safari Seasons in Africa: Wet, dry and green ; what these seasons really mean

Across safaris in Africa the words dry season and wet season are used a lot. Dry season usually means sunny days, cool mornings, very little rain, and shorter grasses. Waterholes shrink, permanent rivers hold their level, and wildlife concentrates in predictable places. It becomes easier to see animals and to follow tracks on firm ground. 

Wet season simply means the rains arrive. In much of Southern Africa this is roughly November to March. In East Africa there are two patterns that matter. The short rains often come in November. The long rains are more likely from March into May. The rain does not fall all day, every day. Often it arrives in bursts, clears the air, and leaves the landscape bright and fresh. 

You will also hear people say green season. This is a traveler’s way of describing the rainy months. The bush turns luminous, many antelope give birth, predators follow the easy pickings, and birdlife explodes with migrants and breeding plumage. For photographers, the skies can be extraordinary. For travelers who enjoy a quieter feel, this period can be a gift.

None of these labels equal good or bad. Dry season is superb for classic big-game visibility. Green season offers life, color, young animals, and fewer vehicles. The right choice is the one that fits your dates and your taste.

East Africa through the year

East Africa sits closer to the equator, so temperatures are fairly stable. The changes you notice are rainfall patterns, grass height, and the movement of the wildebeest and zebra herds that make up the Great Migration. 

From January to March, southern Serengeti and Ndutu are the nursery of the plains. Short grass feeds thousands of pregnant cows. Calving arrives in a dramatic wave. Lions, cheetahs, and hyenas work the edges while eagles circle overhead. It is a powerful time to be out early and to settle in with a sighting rather than chase the next one. 

As the year turns, the herds begin to fan west and then north. In June and July, the Western Corridor and the Grumeti region can bring river scenes and long lines of moving wildebeest. From July into October, the action often shifts to Kenya’s Masai Mara. This is crossing season for the Mara River. It is also a fine time for big cats in open country. When short rains arrive in November, the herds begin their slow return journey south. Well-placed mobile camps move with them. Permanent lodges offer resident wildlife and a different kind of stability. We design around your dates rather than insist on a single “best” week.  

Beyond the Migration route, Kenya and northern Tanzania remain rewarding in many months. Amboseli is famous for elephants moving across pans with Mount Kilimanjaro as a backdrop in cooler, drier months. Tarangire comes into its own from July through October when its river draws animals from miles around. The Ngorongoro Crater is a year-round bowl of life with shifting light and changing grass. 

Primate trekking belongs in this conversation too. Rwanda offers gorilla and golden monkey permits throughout the year. Many guests like June to September and December to February when trails are firmer and rain is less frequent, but mist and soft light can be beautiful at other times. Forests always feel alive. The choice is more about how you like to walk and how much time you want to give a trek. 

On the coast, Zanzibar changes tone with the seasons. June to October is dry, breezy, and comfortable. December to February is warm and lively, with excellent conditions in certain bays for kitesurfing. During the short or long rains you can still enjoy quiet beaches and spice farm visits, with showers that come and go. 

Some camps in southern Tanzania pause during the long rains in April and May, especially where roads become tricky. That is not a drawback, it is simply part of the rhythm of the region. We guide you to places that are open and at their best when you plan to travel. 

Southern Africa through the year 

Southern Africa shows a stronger contrast between wet and dry. Dry months bring cool mornings, clear sightlines, and a gradual concentration of animals near water. Green months bring heat and storms that turn the bush emerald, fill shallow pans, and set the stage for births and birds. 

Botswana is a useful case study. The Okavango Delta receives floodwater from rains that fell months earlier in Angola. This water arrives as the dry season sets in. From May through October you get a rare mix of strong land-based game viewing on islands and floodplains, alongside mokoro and boating through channels and lagoons. Predators patrol the edges, elephants pass in long lines, and nights are crisp. In the green months the bush is full of young antelope, birds call from every direction, and storm light creates dramatic scenes. African wild dogs often den in winter, so some areas of Linyanti and the northern Delta are special then. The experience shifts, but quality remains.

Zambia has its own cadence. South Luangwa is a walking safari paradise in the dry season, from about June to October. Guides read stories in the dust and teach you to notice hyena tracks, owl pellets, and the scent of wild sage. The Lower Zambezi combines game drives with canoeing and boating when levels are right, and time on foot on open islands. In the rains many remote bush camps close because black-cotton soils turn to porridge. That is why the experience is so wild when it is open. The Busanga Plains of Kafue are a seasonal jewel. As waters recede and August arrives, red lechwe splash through morning mist, lions watch from termite mounds, and the window remains golden until around October.

Zimbabwe rewards the patient traveler. Hwange’s pans and pumped waterholes become meeting places through winter and spring. Mana Pools, set along the Zambezi, excels for walking and canoeing in the dry months, then often winds down with the heavy rains. Victoria Falls changes with the season. In late summer and early winter the flow can be thunderous. Later in the year the curtain thins, which actually improves visibility into the gorge. We will time your visit to match how you want to experience the Falls. 

Namibia is different again. Focus on Kunene and Damaraland, where desert-adapted elephants and black rhino move along ephemeral rivers and across rocky plains. Along the Skeleton Coast the air is cool and luminous even in summer. After rains, desert flowers and fresh grass add color to the vastness. This is a land of space and texture more than dense game, and it pairs beautifully with a classic big-game area elsewhere. 

South Africa lets you combine climates. The Kruger private reserves, including places like Timbavati and the Sabi Sands, are outstanding for big cats in the dry months when grasses are short and nights are cool. In the green months you gain color, young animals, and migratory birds along with fewer vehicles. Cape Town and the Winelands follow a Mediterranean pattern. Summer, from about December to March, is warm and clear. Winter brings showers, fireplaces, and long lunches. Many guests pair Cape Town with a safari further northeast for balance. 

For the beach piece, think private Zanzibar islands and Mozambique’s private islands, including parts of the Bazaruto Archipelago. Clear seas and calm conditions are more common from April into December. The first quarter of the year can be wetter in some areas, so we plan accordingly.

What actually changes for you 

Three things shift in a way you can feel. First, the behavior and density of wildlife. Dry months funnel animals to water. You might spend an hour watching elephants move in a slow procession to a pan in Hwange or follow lions waiting silently for thirsty antelope in the Lower Zambezi. In green months the world teems with newborns. Predators hunt often. Birding is at its peak. You trade concentration for energy. 

Second, the look of the land. Dry months bring golden grass and wide views. Green months bring moody cloudscapes, rich tones, and clear air after afternoon showers. Photographers often prefer one or the other. Many end up loving both for different reasons. 

Third, how you spend time. Water levels affect whether boating and mokoro feature in the Delta. Firm ground in Zambia invites longer walks. Ballooning over the Mara and Serengeti is often best with calm, clear mornings. In forests, slightly drier months make gorilla trails easier underfoot. Your days adjust to conditions. The quality does not slip.

How to choose, book, and make the most of your dates

If you plan to travel during school holidays, tell us early. July and August suit the Mara, Botswana, South Luangwa, and parts of Zimbabwe. December into early January works for Cape Town paired with Kruger private reserves, for northern Tanzania, for the Delta and Linyanti, and for beach time on private islands in Mozambique or off Zanzibar. These periods are popular, which means the most loved small camps fill quickly. A lead time of 12 months is sensible for prime rooms and for gorilla permits in Rwanda. 

Shoulder periods can be a sweet spot. In East Africa, April to May and November are quieter. In Southern Africa, parts of April, May, and November can deliver excellent experiences at gentler prices. Green season is the value hunter’s dream. You gain drama in the skies, soft light, and long, unhurried sightings with very few vehicles. Some camps close in the most remote areas at the height of the rains, which is one reason these regions feel so special when they reopen. We will steer you to the right places that suit the month you hold. 

Think about your comfort as well. Dry seasons are cooler at night and may require a fleece at dawn. Green seasons can be warm and humid. Laundry dries quickly, and an afternoon storm on a hot day can be refreshing. If you are a photographer, picture the kind of light and color you prefer. If you are a walker, tell us whether you like slow time on foot. If you love time on the water, we will angle for higher Delta levels or for Zambezi days that balance canoeing with game drives. If predators are your focus, we will plan around denning seasons and hunting patterns. If you are after African wild dog in particular, we will time Linyanti or other strongholds with care. 

For many travelers it is not about one perfect month. It is about a long relationship with the continent. Perhaps your first safari is July in the Mara and Laikipia, with a few nights on the coast. The next year you come back to see the Delta in flood. Then you return for a walking safari in South Luangwa and a seasonal week on the Busanga Plains. Later you make time for gorillas. Each journey shows you a new version of Africa, and none of them repeats the last.

A note on camps and logistics

Seasonality is not only about animals. It is about access. Some wild places close when rains make roads soft and river crossings too high. Examples include certain bush camps in Zambia and parts of Mana Pools in Zimbabwe. In Tanzania, a few southern camps pause during the long rains. Botswana’s high-quality private concessions usually operate year round, but the balance of activities shifts. This is not an obstacle. It is part of the planning we do for you, and it is why local knowledge matters.

When is the best time to go on safari?

There is no single answer. If you want concentrated wildlife, cool mornings, and classic golden scenes, the dry months from May to October in Southern Africa are ideal. If you prefer lush color, fewer vehicles, and newborn animals, consider the green months in the south or the short and long rain periods in East Africa. We fit the plan to your calendar.  

When should I book gorilla trekking?

Permits are limited. Six to twelve months ahead is a helpful range, longer for peak months. We handle the details and build the rest of your trip around your trekking dates. 

Is the rainy season a bad time?

It is different, not worse. Expect dramatic skies, lively birding, young animals, and quieter sightings. Your guide will manage the odd muddy patch with a smile and a winch.
