Ibraham Kayumi, 19, and Emir Balat, 18, were radicalized and bent on destruction, NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said.

The Gracie Mansion counterprotestors accused of throwing IEDs were inspired by ISIS, NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said Monday.

Ibraham Kayumi, 19, and Emir Balat, 18, were radicalized and bent on destruction, with two of the three devices linked to them containing the hallmark explosive seen in bombings around the world, Tisch said at a Monday press conference at Gracie Mansion.

Charges against the suspects are not yet clear, though it is expected they will include acts of terrorism and bomb making.

“I can confirm this morning that this is being investigated as an act of ISIS-inspired terrorism,” Tisch said.

The suspects were busted Saturday after allegedly hurling two inprovised explosive devices during a contentious clash between right-wing agitator Jake Lang, who hates Muslims, and his supporters, and pro-Muslim counterprotestors.

The homemade explosives were packed with nails, bolts and triacetone triperoxide, or TATP. That substance, known informally as “Mother of Satan,” is easy to make and and been a hallmark of various suicide bomb attacks.

A third device found in the suspects’ car on East End Ave. Sunday was not an explosvie, Tisch said.

Tish noted that the last time an IED was used in the city was in 2017, when Akayed Ullah detonated a botched pipe bomb in a subway tunnel underneath the Port Authority Bus Terminal. Ullah is now serving life in prison.

“We were fortuanate that the devices used this weekend did not cause the kind of harm that they were certainly capable of causing,” Tisch said.

“But luck is never a strategy. Devices like this have the potential to cause devastating harm, which is why the NYPD does counterterrorism investigations and treats every incident of its kind with the highest level of urgency — and it is why we remain vigiliant.”

Mayor Mamdani, who was at a museum in Brooklyn with his wife when the incident happened, said that while the city will not tolerate violence he will never waver in his support of any group, no matter the rhetoric, to protest.

“This was a vile protest rooted in white supremacy entitled ‘Stop the Muslim Takeover of New York City,'” Mamdani said. “I’m the first Muslim mayor of New York City. Anti-Muslim bigotry is nothing new to me nor is it anything new for the one million or so Muslim New Yorkers who know this city as our home.”

Columbia Acting President Claire Shipman has said that DHS agents "misrepresented" that "they were police searching for a missing child."

The NYPD on Friday released body-camera footage of officers encountering Department of Homeland Security agents after last week’s federal immigration arrest of Columbia University student Ellie Aghayeva.

Columbia Acting President Claire Shipman has said that DHS agents “misrepresented” that “they were police searching for a missing child” to enter a Columbia apartment building and temporarily detain one of its students. DHS has said agents identified themselves but has not commented on the missing person allegation.

The release of the video came days after Democratic lawmakers sent a letter calling on NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch to publish the footage related to the arrest of Aghayeva, a Columbia senior from Azerbaijan. The elected officials also asked Columbia to release its own security footage, which school officials have declined to do.

“The public interest demands transparency and accountability related both to the actions of the Federal officers involved and the assertions made by DHS officials,” read the Monday letter, signed by State Assemblyman Micah Lasher, Manhattan Borough President Brad Hoylman-Sigal and local City Councilman Shaun Abreu, among others.

The nearly 11-minute video shows an anonymous 911 caller on Feb. 26, the day of Aghayeva’s arrest, reporting two “suspicious” men dressed in dark clothes trying to gain entry. There is no sign of Aghayeva in her apartment.

Body-cam footage from the viewpoints of two police officers shows them responding to the call just after 6:30 a.m. at W. 121st St. At the scene, police find a Columbia school safety officer and a plainclothes DHS agent, who appears to be wearing a Homeland Security badge around his neck, in the hallway. Two more DHS agents and a man identified as the building superintendent are found inside the apartment, with both of the former sporting badges.

It was not clear from the footage if the three DHS agents, or two more agents that Shipman has said were present, had been wearing the badges when they first entered the building. The university president has also said the Columbia officer arrived after “it became clear they had misrepresented themselves,” and then asked them “multiple times” for a warrant.

(NYPD)

Hoylman-Sigal on Friday thanked the NYPD for making the footage available.

“Based on the video, it’s more imperative than ever that @Columbia release their security camera footage so we can fully understand how ICE gained access to this off-campus housing and to the extent civil rights violations occurred,” he wrote on X.

Spokespeople for Columbia referred the Daily News to Shipman’s prior statements. DHS did not immediately return a request for comment.

“To ensure full transparency and show exactly how our officers appropriately responded to this incident, the NYPD released both the body worn camera footage and 911 call,” a NYPD spokesperson said in a statement.

Aghayeva’s arrest appeared to be the first time in nearly a year that federal immigration authorities were active on Columbia’s campus, which has been rocked by the detention of several classmates, including most famously, former graduate student and Palestinian activist Mahmoud Khalil.

During the video, the police officers enter the building through an intercom system. There are no Columbia personnel downstairs.

Police enter the apartment and find two more DHS agents and a third man, who the first agent identified as the building superintendent: “I think that’s the ‘suspicious person’ right there. ‘All black,'” an officer quips at the sight of one of the agents in dark clothes.

One agent provides identification, while the other does not. The officers respond that “two out of three” is “fine.”

Aghayeva was released later that afternoon after Mayor Mamdani at an unrelated meeting with President Trump asked that she be let go, as well as that the cases of four other people connected to Columbia — three current and former students and a protester — be dropped.

“When I sat with the president in the Oval Office, I brought up to him the fact that ICE had detained a Columbia student just that morning,” Mamdani said at an unrelated news conference on Tuesday. “I believe that all of their cases should be dropped.”

“After the meeting concluded, shortly thereafter, I received a phone call from the president informing me that he was taking the decision to release her imminently.”

Eldridge and Breslin were the parents of nine children and 11 grandchildren. They married in 1982, and remained together until Breslin’s death in 2017.

But Eldridge was making headlines long before she and Breslin got together.

She was the only woman in a contest to succeed Percy Sutton, a pattern she found troubling, but all too common.

“There aren’t large differences on the issues, but we have definite personality differences,” Eldridge said at the time. “ And I am a woman, and I think that’s the strongest asset I have.”

She lost. More than a decade later, she would lean on her experience as a Democratic district leader in Manhattan, a vice chairman of the party’s national platform committee and a deputy city administrator for former Mayor John Lindsay to win a seat on the City Council, representing Manhattan’s Upper West Side.

The mayor has been pushing Gov. Hochul to hike taxes on the wealthiest New Yorkers and corporations, as well as arguing more generally that the city doesn't get an equitable share of the pie and that the state should give the Big Apple more funding.

First Deputy Mayor Dean Fuleihan said Thursday he’s optimistic the state will fork over more money to the city, as the city wrangles with a possible $5.4 billion budget gap.

The mayor has been pushing Gov. Hochul to pass tax hikes on the wealthiest New Yorkers and corporations, as well as arguing more generally that the city doesn’t get an equitable share of the pie and that the state should give the Big Apple more funding.

“That’s part of the effort that we’re right now, I believe, successfully discussing in Albany,” Fuleihan said at a New York Law School breakfast.

State grants make up 16% of the upcoming budget, while federal grants make up 6%, Fuleihan said, adding, “We hope the state will be much higher than 16%.”

Mayor Mamdani has said the city is facing a more than $5 billion budget gap after fiscal mismanagement under former Mayor Adams

State lawmakers are expected next week to formally unveil their nonbinding budget resolutions — which are expected to include tax hikes, Politico first reported.

Mamdani has threatened to raise city property tax rates — the only tax hike he can approve as mayor — if the governor does not step in to help the city balance its budget and fund his affordability-centric agenda items like universal childcare.

“This is not a frustrated face. I’m not frustrated. I know how to do this,” Hochul said in response to a question on whether she was ticked off by Mamdani’s ultimatum.

Hochul has stood firm against tax hikes on the wealthy, though she’s signaled some openness to raising the corporate tax rate.

Speaking at an East Harlem press conference with Mamdani, the governor pointed out that the state Legislature has every year put forward tax increases on the rich. She also emphasized that she’s committed to sending the city billions for child care and to help the city close its budget gap.

“I think the moral of the story, and the lesson to take away is that there’s never been this level of cooperation, because I am also invested in the success of the city,” Hochul said. “I don’t think governors usually speak like that.”

State Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins said Wednesday that the upper chamber would be including the hikes on the wealthiest New Yorkers and top corporate tax rate.

“We are certainly trying to meet the moment,” she said, “and revenue raisers would certainly be part of our package.”

“We will make our case and I’m sure the governor will make her case, as will the mayor and everyone else,” Stewart-Cousins told reporters. “That’s what this is about.”

Having campaigned on "fast and free buses" — and getting sworn in at a disused, historic subway station — Mayor Mamdani is seeking to make transit improvements a cornerstone of his mayoralty.

The Mamdani administration appointed three new upper-level staffers at the city’s Department of Transportation Thursday.

“I am honored to welcome Tiffany-Ann Taylor as chief strategy officer, Madeline Labadie as chief of staff, and Sindhu Bharadwaj as director of strategic initiatives — three exceptional leaders whose policy expertise and operational experience will strengthen our ability to meet this moment,” Transportation Commissioner Mike Flynn said in a statement Thursday.

Taylor, a veteran of freight policy at NYCDOT as well as the city’s Economic Development Corp., comes to the role of the city’s chief transportation strategist from the Regional Plan Association, where she served as the think tank’s vice president for transit.

In a statement to The News, Taylor said the department was “well positioned to lead the charge” of the Mamdani administration’s transportation agenda.

“It is an honor to return to NYCDOT as chief strategy officer,” she said. “This is an exciting moment to serve our city, and I look forward to delivering for all New Yorkers.”

Labadie, DOT’s new chief of staff, served as City Hall’s deputy chief of staff under former Mayor Eric Adams. Labadie also co-chaired the Adams administration’s “e-micromobility” task force, charged with helping to lower the number of e-bike crashes citywide.

Labadie is also a veteran of the Taxi and Limousine Commission, where she served as the director of strategic initiatives from 2019 to 2021.

DOT’s new director of strategic initiatives, Bharadwaj, comes to the agency after three years as former Comptroller Brad Lander’s senior policy analyst for transportation, sanitation and infrastructure.

Having campaigned on “fast and free buses” — and getting sworn in at a disused, historic subway station — Mayor Mamdani is seeking to make transit improvements a cornerstone of his mayoralty.

“When Mayor Mamdani asked me to serve as DOT commissioner, he challenged us to think big, be bold, and make our streetscape the envy of the world,” Flynn said in his statement announcing the new staffers on Thursday. “Together, our agency will advance the mayor’s affordability agenda by delivering safer streets, faster buses and transportation options that work for working New Yorkers.”

A father and son who ran a Queens print shop turned their business into a raging inferno because they were being evicted — but were done in by the store's security footage, prosecutors say.

A father and son who ran a Queens print shop turned their business into a raging inferno because they were being evicted by their landlord — only to be done in by footage from their store’s security camera, federal prosecutors allege.

The feds arrested Narinder Singh, 56, and his son, Jawahar Singh, 29, on federal arson charges Thursday, accusing them of using paper towels and a hot plate to start the Feb. 18 blaze.

The Singhs, who both hail from Nassau County, have been embroiled in a legal battle with the owner of the 101st Ave. building for years, with the landlord referring to them and their business as “squatters” in state court filings. The city marshal’s office filed a notice of eviction Jan. 29.

That eviction was scheduled for Feb. 18, and when the Singhs lost an emergency appeal the day before, they decided to torch the place, the feds allege.

“It was a crime done out of revenge,” Assistant U.S. Attorney Daniel Amzallag said at Jawahar Singh’s Brooklyn Federal Court arraignment Thursday. “It was a crime done out of revenge. The defendant and his father knew they were about to be evicted.”

Video from about four hours before 12:30 a.m., when the fire started, shows the father and son, their faces visible, move a table with a hot plate and several rolls of paper towels on it, according to a criminal complaint.

Jawahar Singh then plugged a long, orange extension cord into a “smart plug,” which can be activated remotely, the feds allege. One of the paper towel rolls was positioned on the hot plate, and four more were placed nearby.

The father and son left, and a few hours later, video shows the paper towel roll on the hot plate catch fire, according to the complaint. The blaze spread quickly — FDNY officials said the fire went to a second alarm and spread to an adjoining building.

Forty-six FDNY units with a total of 141 firefighters responded to the South Richmond Hill blaze, which took more than an hour and a half to tame. No one was injured, according to the FDNY.

FDNY personnel recovered the smart plug, the extension cord and the hot plate, according to the criminal complaint.

At the scene of the blaze, Jawahar Singh let the FDNY know about the security camera inside the store that caught their arson in action, according to the complaint.

Jawahar Singh had also filed several lawsuits to stop the eviction, alleging in one that the landlord agreed to settle the matter for $8,000, then refused to honor the agreement, according to the criminal complaint.

Jawahar Singh hid in the closet crawlspace of his West Hempstead home when authorities came to arrest him Thursday, Amzallag, the prosecutor, said.

Magistrate Judge Peggy Kuo ordered Jawahar Singh released on $100,000 bond, but he faces the prospect of deportation to his native India when released. His father, who was hospitalized, has not yet been arraigned.

Jawahar Singh was arrested in 2019 after overstaying a tourist visa, and he and his parents have applied for asylum to get away from Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s BJP Party.

Jawahar Singh’s application was rejected, and he’s appealing that decision, but an immigration judge ordered his detention Thursday, according to his lawyer Robert Caliendo — who said he’s not a flight risk.

“The point is that he’s fighting very hard to stay in this country. He doesn’t want to leave,” Caliendo said.

When asked whether his client would be grabbed by immigration agents once released on bond, Caliendo told reporters, “Like a lot of people dealing with this immigration question, we simply don’t know what’s going to happen.”

On his show Wednesday morning, Rosenberg admitted Tisch, who he considers a “very good friend,” texted him about the post and they had a “great conversation, as did former NYPD Chief of Department John Chell.

Right-wing radio personality Sid Rosenberg apologized for calling Mayor Mamdani a “cockroach,” after the host’s hateful remarks sparked a massive backlash, including from Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch.

Tisch both called Rosenberg out publicly and texted him directly about the post, he said.

“I apologize this morning for the name-calling. And I could have made my tweet without doing all that, and I was very sincere, and still am in my apologies, not just to the mayor, but to anybody else I offended,” Rosenberg said on-air. He then launched into a rant about how Democrats get away with calling people names “a lot worse than an insect.”

In the now-deleted post from Monday, Rosenberg called Mamdani an “America-hating, Jew-hating, Radical Islam cockroach” and a “jihadist.”

Rosenberg said on his show that it’s “not nice to call somebody a bug” and claimed that the post had “nothing to do with anybody’s religion or faith or anything.” He didn’t address calling Mamdani a “jihadist.”

“Time will tell how sincere of an apology it is,” Mamdani told ABC in an interview Wednesday.

“I do want to take a moment, however, to say thank you to all of the New Yorkers, elected officials, leaders and many in their own regards who spoke up,” he said. “Because frankly, this is not about me. This is about the more than 1 million Muslims who call New York City home and who have long had to deal with racist and dehumanizing rhetoric.”

On his WABC show Wednesday morning, Rosenberg admitted that Tisch, whom he considers a “very good friend,” texted him about the post and they had a “great conversation,” as did former NYPD Chief of Department John Chell.

“We believe open conversation is important to talk radio in our country,” John Catsimatidis, owner of WABC, said Wednesday. “But personal attacks on individuals is not acceptable on WABC. We are glad Sid Rosenberg, our good friend, agrees and understands WABC’s policies.”

Tisch called Rosenberg’s initial post “wholly inappropriate and deeply harmful,” in a statement late Tuesday.

“I do not share those views in any way, and any rhetoric that seeks to dehumanize and disparage someone’s religion cannot be tolerated,” she said.

Tisch and the mayor have opposing views on many public safety issues, which has been the source of tension during the first days of the Mamdani administration. The commissioner dined with Rosenberg, who had also called Mamdani a “terrorist,” in January.

Mamdani slammed the radio host’s “bigotry” on Tuesday, calling his post “dehumanizing.”

“To be called animals, insects, to be called a jihadist mayor, to be called a cockroach — this language is both painfully familiar to me as a Muslim New Yorker, but also as someone who was born in East Africa,” the mayor said at an unrelated news conference.

Two others whose photos were released to the media are still being sought in connection with the snowball fight that saw the participants pelt responding NYPD officers.

A second suspect has been busted for throwing snowballs at cops in Washington Square Park, sources said.

Eric Wilson, 18, surrendered at the 6th Precinct stationhouse, accompanied by his lawyer, at 9:10 a.m. Wednesday, police said.

“I did nothing wrong,” Wilson told the Daily News after pleading not guilty at his arraignment in Manhattan Criminal Court on Wednesday. “I’m just trying to get out of here.”

Wilson, who lives in Harlem, was charged with obstructing governmental administration, a misdemeanor, and harassment, a noncriminal violation, sources said. He was released without bail.

“My son has never been in trouble before,” said Wilson’s mother, who met her son at the courthouse for his arraignment. “If I was an officer, I would have joined in myself. It’s ridiculous. If you’re going to arrest one, you need to rest everyone there.”

The first person arrested in connection with the Feb. 23 incident, Gusmane Coulibaly, 27, was hit with the same charges.

Police had originally charged Coulibaly with felony assault, but Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg reduced the charges, angering police unions.

“The bottom line is, police officers were injured in this case,” said Police Benevolent Association President Patrick Hendry, who appeared at Wilson’s arraignment alongside 20 uniformed police officers. “We believe that assault should have [been charged] in this case.”

Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch called the incident a “disgraceful” and “criminal” attack on police officers, but Mayor Mamdani described it as “kids at a snowball fight” and said no one should be arrested.

Nonetheless, the NYPD released photos of four suspects — including two still being sought.

Several hours before the incident, organizers on social media touted a midafternoon mass snowball fight.

But at some point, police said, a 911 caller said there were people who had climbed on the comfort station roof and were hurling snowballs.

Two police officers assigned to a park detail went to investigate and were pelted with snowballs, as were other cops called to assist the two officers.

One officer was treated for bruises and scratches below his eye and another was treated for head pain. At least one of the officers went on sick leave to recover from his injuries, according to Hendry.
