On 14^th May, 2025, a group of Form Three students from Cardinal Otunga Girls High School, Bungoma, visited Kibabii University for an educational tour focused on modern sewer systems and waste management technologies.

The visit was part of their science and environmental studies curriculum, designed to expose students to real-world applications of waste treatment. The learners were received and guided by Eng. Julias Maloba, the Senior Estates Officer at Kibabii University, who provided a comprehensive overview of the University’s sewer system, explaining each stage of the waste treatment process from the primary treatment phase, which involves two large tanks referred to as primary ponds, where solid waste is separated from liquid waste.

“The process starts with the separation of solids and liquids, which is crucial for effective treatment. These primary ponds play a vital role in the initial stage of waste management,” he explained.

The students also explored the oxidation pond, where oxygen is introduced into the wastewater where utilization bacteria and algae to facilitates redox reactions that break down harmful substances. Additional treatment processes, including carbonation, reduction, and oxidation ensure that the water is adequately purified for safe release or reuse.

The session sparked interest among the students, many of whom expressed a desire to pursue further studies at Kibabii University after their Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations.
