Our first taste of Babinda was, quite literally, a taste. Just outside town, we pulled over at a roadside stall selling bananas, the honesty-box sort you find all through the far north, and bought a bunch for next to nothing. They were the best we had eaten, sweet and soft and still warm from the tropical sun. We stood by the moho eating them one after another, and if that had been all Babinda gave us, it would have been enough. But there was much more.

Babinda sits about 60 kilometres south of Cairns, a small sugar and banana town tucked right under Queensland’s two highest mountains, Bartle Frere and Bellenden Ker. It is one of the wettest places in the country, forever trading the title of Australia's wettest town with nearby Tully and Innisfail, and all that rain makes for a lush, dripping, impossibly green corner of the tropics. The town itself is small and quiet, with a wide main street, a few shops, some closed the day we came through, and the unmistakable feel of a place the highway hurries past. But people do not really come to Babinda for the town. They come for the Boulders.

Seven kilometres up a sealed road behind town, Babinda Creek tumbles down out of the mountains through a jumble of huge granite boulders, smoothed round and pale by the water over unimaginable time. It is a genuinely beautiful place, rainforest crowding down to the water, the creek running clear and cool over the rocks, with a picnic area, lawns, toilets and changing rooms, and a designated swimming hole that is safe, popular and lovely on a hot day. We spent a good while here, walking the short tracks through the forest to the viewing platforms, watching the water pour through the rocks below.

And it is here that Babinda's beauty turns to something more sombre, because a little downstream lies Devil's Pool, one of the most dangerous stretches of water in Australia.

There is no gentle way to say this, so we will say it plainly. Since 1959, more than twenty people have drowned at Devil's Pool, the vast majority of them young men. It looks calm. It looks inviting. That is exactly what makes it so deadly. Beneath the surface, the water funnels through narrow channels and under the granite in fierce, hidden currents, siphons and chutes that can pull even a strong swimmer down and pin them under the rock with a force no person can fight. People have died there who were barely in the water, who slipped from a rock, who ventured a few metres past the safe zone.

The swimming area at the Boulders is safe, and it is signed, fenced and clear. Devil’s Pool and the stretch below it are a designated No Go Zone, and the signs are not being cautious for the sake of it. Stay in the marked swimming area. Do not climb over the barriers, do not walk out onto the downstream rocks, and do not let anyone in your group treat the warnings as a challenge. This is the single most important thing to know before you visit, and it is worth saying to your kids, your mates, and anyone travelling with you.

An older story is woven into this place too, and it deserves to be told with respect. To the Yidinji people, this is the story of Oolana, a young woman promised to a tribal elder who fell in love with a young man from another mob. When they were caught and separated, Oolana threw herself into the waters of the creek in her grief, and it is said her cries brought the boulders tumbling down and turned the calm creek into the churning pool it is today. Her spirit is believed to remain in the water, still calling for her lost love and drawing wandering young men down to her. Whatever you make of the legend, the truth beneath it is plain enough. This place has taken many lives, and the old story and the modern warning signs say exactly the same thing. Treat it with respect, and keep your distance.

A little south of Babinda, at the foot of Bartle Frere, is Josephine Falls, and it makes a natural pairing with the Boulders. It is one of the prettiest waterfalls in the far north, a series of cascades and pools spilling over smooth granite through the rainforest, with a natural rock slide that has thrilled generations of visitors. It is beautiful, and it too demands care; flash flooding after rain has claimed lives here, and the rocks are slippery. Check conditions, obey the signs, and enjoy it for the genuinely lovely place it is. The walk in is short and easy, through classic wet-tropics rainforest, and well worth doing. ‍

Babinda surprised us. We came for a cheap bunch of roadside bananas and found one of the most beautiful, and most sobering, stops on the whole run north. The Boulders are genuinely special, green and cool and ancient, and the safe swimming hole is a delight. But the place carries a weight too, a long, sad history and a legend that both say the same thing: this beautiful water is not to be trifled with. Go, swim in the safe zone, walk the rainforest, eat the bananas, and take the warnings to heart. Babinda gives a lot to those who treat it with respect.

Babinda

Babinda is a small sugar and banana town in the Cairns Region of Tropical North Queensland. Sitting beneath Queensland’s two highest peaks, Bartle Frere and Bellenden Ker, it is arguably one of the wettest towns in Australia, competing each year with Tully and Innisfail for the title. It is best known for the Babinda Boulders, a scenic reserve where Babinda Creek runs through spectacular granite boulders, with a safe swimming hole and the notoriously dangerous Devil’s Pool downstream. This is Yidinji and Madjandji country.

‍How to Get There

Babinda sits right on the Bruce Highway, about 60 kilometres south of Cairns and a similar distance north of Innisfail, so it is an easy stop on the coastal run. Turn off the highway into town, follow Munro Street through the middle, and the Boulders are about 7 kilometres up a sealed road behind town. The road is suitable for all vehicles. Josephine Falls is signed off the highway a little to the south. Everything is close and well marked.

Bought a bunch of sweet bananas from a roadside stall outside town.

When to Visit

The dry season, from about May to October, is the most comfortable and safest time for the water, with lower rainfall and gentler creek flows. The wet season, from November to April, brings enormous rain (this is one of the wettest places in the country) and with it flash flooding, which makes the creeks and falls far more dangerous. The Boulders and Josephine Falls are at their most powerful after rain, but that is also when they are most lethal, so the dry season is both the easier and the wiser time to come. Whenever you visit, check current conditions and never enter the water after heavy rain.

Babinda sits on the coastal run between Innisfail and the rainforest castle of Paronella Park or Tully to the south, and Cairns and the Kuranda ranges to the north. A Serious Safety Note

Some stops need a straight warning rather than our usual light-hearted one.

Devil’s Pool is genuinely deadly. More than twenty people have drowned in this stretch of Babinda Creek since 1959, most of them young men, many who only slipped or ventured slightly past the safe zone. The water funnels under the boulders through hidden chutes with a force no swimmer can escape.

Swim only in the designated safe area at the Boulders. It is clearly marked, and it is genuinely lovely. Do not cross the barriers into the No Go Zone, no matter how calm the water looks.

Never enter the water after rain. Flash flooding is sudden and has killed people at both the Boulders and Josephine Falls. Check conditions and heed every sign.

Respect the cultural warnings. The Traditional Owners have asked people to stay out of Devil’s Pool, both for safety and out of respect for a place of deep significance.

Some towns hand you a surprise or two. Maryborough hands you a whole streetful, with a straight face and a wink at the same time.

We came expecting a pleasant heritage town on the way through, and we left having visited the birthplace of Mary Poppins, stood in a smugglers’ bond store where opium was once perfectly legal, browsed the Hervey Bay Art Society’s 42nd Annual Competitive Art Exhibition and, for the grand finale, had a guided tour of a public toilet complete with a golden throne. Maryborough takes its history seriously while refusing to take itself too seriously, and that combination makes it one of the most quietly delightful stops.

Maryborough sits on the Mary River in the Fraser Coast region, a little inland off the Bruce Highway about 255 kilometres north of Brisbane. Most people barrel past it on the way to Hervey Bay and K’gari, and that is their loss, because this is one of Queensland’s oldest and most interesting cities.

Established in 1847, it grew rich through wool, timber, sugar and shipping, and in its heyday it was one of the most important ports in the country. All that old money built a town full of grand buildings and wide streets. We gave Maryborough a proper day, and could easily have given it two.

The obvious place to begin is with the town’s most famous export, though you would never guess her fame from her name. Helen Lyndon Goff was born here in 1899, in the building that was then the Australian Joint Stock Bank, where her father was the manager. She grew up to write under the name P.L. Travers and created Mary Poppins. That childhood home is now the Story Bank, an interactive museum about Travers, her most famous creation, and the craft of storytelling itself. It is genuinely excellent. It is playful, clever and hands-on, with shadow puppets, a colouring wall, touchscreens, a phone that rings for you to answer, and around twenty little mice hidden throughout the building for you to find with your map and pencil.

The museum leans into a lovely theory: a magical nanny who works for a bank manager might have been inspired by the aunt of a bank manager’s daughter from a town called Maryborough. Whether or not that is true, the town has embraced its Poppins connection with open arms, right down to the pedestrian lights, which show a little umbrella-toting nanny instead of the usual walking figure.

From the Story Bank, we wandered down to the Portside precinct on the river and into the old Bond Store, where the mood shifts from whimsy to something older and saltier.

Built in 1864, this is one of Queensland’s oldest surviving bond stores, with earthen floors worn smooth by time and the original timber rails still set into the ground for rolling barrels of rum. This is where Maryborough’s port history comes alive. From 1859, the town was a gazetted Port of Entry and became one of the country’s most significant immigration gateways, second only to Sydney as an eastern-seaboard port for free settlers. More than twenty thousand immigrants first set foot in Australia right here.

The Bond Store itself is where the customs men held the “bonded” goods, the imports and exports that were taxed on their way in and out: alcohol, tobacco, sugar and, in a detail that stops every visitor, opium, which was entirely legal at the time.

Standing above the earthen floors, among the barrel rails, with the river just outside, you get a vivid sense of a rowdy, wealthy, and complicated port town that most people have entirely forgotten ever existed.

We also spent a little time at the Maryborough Arts Space, which was showing the current entrants in the local art competition. It is exactly the sort of thing we like to stumble on, a room full of work by local artists, a snapshot of what a community is making and thinking, with no entry fee and no fuss. Maryborough has a strong creative streak running through it. A mural trail of some forty works winds through the streets, and the Arts Space is a good place to see the town’s contemporary side alongside all that heritage.

And then, because Maryborough always saves something up its sleeve, there was the Cistern Chapel!

The Cistern Chapel: A Loo Fit for Royalty

Yes, it is a public toilet.

No, that does not begin to cover it.

The Cistern Chapel, a playful nod to Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel, is a set of public toilets near City Hall that a group of dedicated locals aimed to make the best in Australia.Led by Nancy Bates, who, upon seeing the shabby facilities, reportedly declared she wanted “the best toilets in Australia, maybe the world,” they enlisted artists Arkos Juhasz and Gary Madden to enhance them. The resulting transformation is remarkable and must be seen to be believed, and fortunately, volunteers known as the ‘Flusher Ushers’ offer free guided tours.

The ladies’ loo is done up in full Victorian splendour, with a chandelier, gilded mirrors, fresh flowers, classical music piped softly through the air, murals of women in flowing white dresses wandering through flower gardens, and, the crowning glory, an actual golden throne, a toilet gilded to look like something a monarch might reign from.

The men’s facility runs with trains and steam, paying tribute to the town's industrial past, and the cubicles feature an under-the-sea theme. Maryborough's floral emblem, the crimson bottlebrush, is woven through the artwork, and local jokes and figures are hidden in the murals, including a former mayor honoured for bringing sewerage to the town, which is exactly the perfect joke for this setting. It is silly and splendid and genuinely beautiful all at once, and it tells you everything about Maryborough, a town proud enough of itself to make even the toilets a work of art, and cheeky enough to name them after the Sistine Chapel.

Final Thoughts

Maryborough surprised us at every turn. It has the grand bones of an old port city, the literary claim to one of the world’s most beloved characters, a genuine creative heart, and a sense of humour that runs from the pedestrian lights to the palatial public loos. The town absolutely encourages curiosity; the more you poke about, the more you discover. We highly recommend a stop at the information centre and grabbing both the driving and walking tour directions. Do not do what many do and drive past on the way to Hervey Bay. Pull off, park up, and give Maryborough a day. Just make sure that day includes the toilets.

Maryborough

The heritage precinct, Portside and the main attractions are close together and very walkable once you are in town.

When to Visit

The cooler, drier months from about April to October are the most comfortable for wandering Maryborough’s streets and heritage precinct, with warm days and low humidity. Thursday is market day, when the town centre comes alive with stalls, entertainment and rides on the Mary Ann steam train, so it is a fine day to plan around. Summer is hot and humid, and while the town is a year-round destination, the walking is far more pleasant in the cooler season. The Cistern Chapel, the Story Bank and the Bond Store are all indoor or shaded, so they suit a hot day or a wet one.

Maryborough sits at the gateway to the Fraser Coast, just inland from Hervey Bay and the great sand island of K'gari (Fraser Island). Most travellers rush through on their way to those big-name destinations, but the town rewards a stop in its own right. To the south the Bruce Highway runs down toward Gympie and Brisbane, and to the north lie Childers, Bundaberg and the central Queensland coast. Things That Could Kill You (Probably Won’t)

A semi-serious guide to surviving Australia. Mostly common sense, occasionally luck.

The heat: Fraser Coast summers are hot and humid. Hat, water, and do the walking trails in the cooler part of the day.

Heritage-town distraction: Maryborough is very walkable and very interesting, which means a lot of looking up at buildings instead of down at the footpath. Mind the kerbs and the traffic while you look.

The Mary River: Pretty, and tidal, and this is Queensland, so treat the water with respect and mind the banks. Croc sightings this far south are rare but not unheard of.

Cistern Chapel envy: You will go home and look at your own bathroom with quiet disappointment. There is no cure. There is only a return visit.

You smell Tully before you see much of it. Drive into town during the crushing season, and the air is thick with the sweet, heavy scent of processing sugar, and great clouds of steam pour from the mill in the middle of town. It is a working place, unmistakably, a sugar town going about its business, and that smell in the air tells you exactly what Tully does for a living before you have read a single sign.

We stayed at the Tully Caravan Park and spent our time wandering the town, and Tully is a good town for wandering. It sits just off the Bruce Highway in the heart of the Cassowary Coast, hemmed in by green hills and cane fields, and it has two claims to fame that it wears with obvious pride. It is one of the wettest towns in Australia. And it has built a giant golden gumboot to prove it.

The gumboot is the thing everyone stops for, and the story behind it is better than you would guess. Back in the 1970s, an ABC reporter coined the phrase "the Golden Gumboot" for the unofficial contest between the three wettest towns on this coast, Tully, Innisfail and Babinda, each vying every year for the title of wettest town in Australia. A rubber boot was the prize. The rivalry was fierce, the rainfall gauges were watched closely, and there were mutterings of "fair and honest cheating" in the measuring. It was all in good fun, but Tully had a trump card the others could not match. In 1950, the town recorded 7,900 millimetres of rain in a single year, the highest annual rainfall ever measured in a populated place in Australia. To put that in perspective, 1,320 millimetres of it fell in just 48 hours.

So in 2003 the town built a monument to its sodden glory, and here is the clever part. The Golden Gumboot stands 7.9 metres tall, exactly the height of that 1950 rainfall. Stand at the base and look up, and you are looking at how deep the water would have stood if a year's worth of Tully rain had fallen and stayed put. It is a wonderfully literal thing, a giant boot measuring the rain in the most direct way possible. A green tree frog climbs the outside, a nod to the rainforest, and inside a spiral staircase winds up past photographs of the town’s many floods to a viewing platform at the top. Cameron climbed it, of course, and got the reward, a view out over the town and the steaming sugar mill next door.

That mill is the other half of Tully’s story, and the source of the smell and the steam. The Tully Sugar Mill crushes around two million tonnes of cane a year through the harvest season, roughly June to November, and it has been the beating heart of the district for a century. In the crushing season, the mill runs day and night, the cane trains rattle in along their narrow-gauge tracks, and the whole town smells of it. If you are here in season and the timing is right, the mill runs tours, which are worth doing if you have any curiosity about where your sugar comes from. Even if you do not tour it, the mill is a presence you cannot ignore, and it is a big part of what gives Tully its unpolished, working character.

We kept our visit simple: the caravan park, a wander through town, the gumboot and the smell of sugar. But Tully sits at the doorstep of a lot more, if you have the time and the gear. The Tully River is one of the best white-water rafting rivers in the country, run daily by commercial operators through a spectacular rainforest gorge, its flow topped up by releases from the hydro dam upstream. Tully Gorge National Park runs up into the ranges behind town, all rainforest and lookouts and the gorge itself. And the coast is close, with Mission Beach and its long tropical sands just to the east. Tully makes a sensible base for any of it.

By the time we moved on, Tully had left its mark, mostly through our noses. There is something honest about a town that does not dress itself up, that smells of its industry and builds a monument to its rain. We came for a caravan park and a giant boot, and left with a soft spot for a working town that knows exactly what it is.

Tully

Tully is a sugar-milling town in the Cassowary Coast region of Tropical North Queensland. Set among cane fields and green hills, it is one of the wettest towns in Australia, holding the national record for the highest annual rainfall in a populated area, and it is famous for the Golden Gumboot monument that marks it. The town is built around the Tully Sugar Mill and sits at the gateway to the Tully River, one of Australia’s premier white-water rafting rivers, and Tully Gorge National Park.

How to Get There

Tully sits just off the Bruce Highway, about 140 kilometres south of Cairns and 210 kilometres north of Townsville, so it is an easy stop on the main coastal run. The highway is fully sealed and suitable for all vehicles and motorhomes. Tully is also on the Brisbane to Cairns rail line. The town centre, with the Golden Gumboot and the sugar mill, is a short and well-signed detour off the highway. Mission Beach, on the coast, is about a 20-minute drive east.

Whenever you come, be prepared for a shower. This is, after all, the wettest town in the country.

Final Thoughts

Tully is not a town that puts on airs, and that is exactly its appeal. It smells of sugar and celebrates its most famous quality, relentless rain, with a giant golden boot you can climb. There is something genuinely likeable about a place so comfortable in its own skin. Bring a raincoat, climb the boot, breathe in the sugar, and enjoy Tully for exactly what it is.

The rain and floods: Tully is the wettest town in the country for a reason. In the wet season, roads flood and creeks rise fast. Check conditions and do not cross flooded roads.

The Tully River: Superb rafting, but it is serious white water run through a dam-fed gorge. Go with a licensed commercial operator, never on your own.

Cassowaries: This is the Cassowary Coast, and you may see one near Mission Beach or the rainforest edges. They are large, powerful and wild. Never approach or feed them, and give them plenty of room.

The heat and humidity: Tropical North Queensland is hot and sticky most of the year. Hat, water, and take it easy in the middle of the day.

Childers: Heritage, Sugar and a Solemn Memorial

We came into Childers after a quiet night up the road at Miriam Vale, a quaint little town, where the main attractions, if we are honest, were the Big Rock Wallaby and a giant doughnut. We had spent a little time relaxing out of town before heading in, and we were not quite prepared for how busy Childers would be. For a small country town, the place hums, largely because the Bruce Highway runs straight through the middle of it, funnelling a steady stream of travellers down a main street lined with grand old buildings and shady trees.

Childers sits on a low rise of rich red soil in the Bundaberg region, surrounded by cane fields, avocado orchards and macadamias. It was built in the 1880s to service the sugar industry, and sugar still shapes it, but somewhere along the way Childers became something more. A genuine heritage town, its main street a near-intact streetscape of early 1900s architecture. Much of Churchill Street is heritage-listed, and it is a lovely place to walk, with iron lacework, parapets and wide, shady awnings. We spent a good while just wandering up and down, taking it in. A fair few places were closed the day we visited, which is the risk with a small town, but the buildings themselves are the attraction as much as anything inside them.

There is a reason the street looks the way it does. In 1902, a fire tore through Childers, destroying most of the south side of the main street. The town rebuilt grandly and quickly, in the styles you see today. That would not be the last time fire marked this town.

The Palace Backpackers Memorial

The building that stops you is the old Palace Hotel, and the reason it stops you is not its architecture, though it is a fine two-storey timber and masonry building from around 1902. It is what happened here on the night of the 23rd of June, 2000.

The Palace had been converted into a backpackers' hostel and was full. Most of the young people staying there were seasonal farm workers, harvesting local crops to earn the regional work required by a second-year working holiday visa. Eighty-five backpackers were asleep inside when, shortly after midnight, a fire was deliberately set in the downstairs recreation room. The century-old timber building had no smoke detectors or fire alarms. The fire spread quickly up the walls and into the stairwell, and the power failed, leaving people to find their way out in darkness and smoke.

What happened next is the part worth holding onto. In the chaos, some of the backpackers went back into the smoke, banging on doors and waking as many others as they could before escaping onto the balcony. Because of them, and because of the fire crews and locals who reached the scene within minutes, most of the eighty-five got out. But fifteen did not. Nine women and six men, most of them travellers from overseas, a long way from home, lost their lives that night. It remains one of the worst tragedies of its kind in Australia.

The man responsible, a former resident who had been evicted from the hostel, was later found guilty of arson and two counts of murder and sentenced to life in prison. We will leave him there, because this is not his story. It belongs to the fifteen.

After the fire, the Isis Shire Council took over the gutted building and, working closely with the victims’ families, restored it. It reopened in 2002, rebuilt in its original early-1900s style, as an art gallery and a memorial. Inside, a long glass memorial wall by artist Sam Di Mauro holds family photographs and mementoes, and a large group portrait by Sydney artist Josonia Palaitis, titled Taking a Break in the Field, shows all fifteen young people at rest together in a field, as farm workers on a break. It is a quiet, dignified, deeply moving place, and standing in front of that painting, with the fifteen faces looking back at you, is not something you forget. If you stop in Childers, stop here and give them a few minutes of your time.

What else is in town

Childers carries its history in more than one place, and some of it is confronting in its own right. Along the main street is a memorial that honours the more than fifty thousand Pacific Islander people who were "blackbirded", coerced or outright kidnapped, to labour in the cane fields in the early years of the sugar industry, often in appalling conditions. They built the wealth of this region, and the memorial is a long-overdue acknowledgement of that. It is worth reading properly.

For a lighter history, the Old Pharmacy, formerly the Childers Pharmaceutical Museum, is a beauty. It is a heritage-listed 1902 shopfront that operated as a pharmacy until the 1980s and now houses one of Australia's largest collections of early pharmaceutical history, with mysterious potions, old timber drawers, and things you would not want to swallow. There is also the Isis District Historical Complex, an outdoor museum of recreated pioneer buildings, and a handful of galleries and cafes along the street.

Out of town, the country is worth a look too. This is rich food-growing land, and there are wineries and produce stops around the district, along with the wide green cane country that gives Childers its setting. And if you are timing a visit, the Childers Festival in late July fills the whole main street.

We came to Childers expecting a quick highway stop and found a town with far more beneath the surface than its size suggests. The heritage street is genuinely lovely, and the sugar history runs deep, in places dark. But it is the memorial we think about most. There is something about standing in a beautifully restored building in a busy little town full of passing travellers, remembering fifteen young people who were exactly that, passing travellers, working the fields, seeing the country, before a single terrible night. Childers honours them with real grace. Stop, walk the street, and go and see them. It is the least and the best thing you can do here.

A quick note on the photographs. You will not find many images of the memorial itself in this post, and that is deliberate. Photography is not permitted inside the Palace Backpackers Memorial, and rightly so. It is a place of remembrance, not a photo opportunity, and the families of the fifteen deserve that quiet. So we have kept our camera in its bag for that part. Some things are better simply seen, and felt, in person.

Childers

Childers is a heritage-listed country town in the Bundaberg region of the Wide Bay, Queensland, on the Bruce Highway about 50 kilometres south-west of Bundaberg. Established in the 1880s to service the surrounding sugar industry, it is set on red volcanic soil among cane, avocado and macadamia country. Today it is known as a National Trust heritage town, its main street a near-intact streetscape of early 1900s buildings, and as the site of the Palace Backpackers Memorial. It is a popular and busy stop on the highway run between Brisbane and Bundaberg. This is Kabi Kabi (Gubbi Gubbi) country.

How to Get There

Childers sits right on the Bruce Highway, about 50 kilometres south-west of Bundaberg and roughly a 4-hour drive north of Brisbane. The highway runs straight through the main street, so it is impossible to miss, though that also makes the town centre busy, so take care with parking and pedestrians. The roads are fully sealed and suitable for all vehicles and rigs. Miriam Vale, a common stop just to the north, is about an hour up the highway.

When to Visit

The cooler, drier months from about April to September are the most comfortable for wandering the main street and exploring the district. Childers is busy year-round thanks to the highway, and especially so during the Childers Festival in late July, which is worth timing for if you enjoy a proper country event, though the town fills up. Many of the smaller museums and shops keep country hours and may be closed on quieter days or early in the week, so check ahead if there is something specific you want to see.

Childers sits on the Bruce Highway between Bundaberg to the north-east and the long run south toward Gympie and Brisbane. Just up the highway is Miriam Vale, an easy overnight stop, and beyond it the Gladstone and Central Queensland coast. Cardwell: Blue Water and a Quiet Coast

Cardwell sits on the Bruce Highway between Townsville and the far north, a thin strip of seaside village pressed between the mountains and the sea, and most travellers treat it as a fuel-and-food stop on the way to somewhere else. We stayed, and we were glad we did. Give Cardwell a day, and it turns out to have a rare thing going for it: a genuinely beautiful blue swimming hole up in the hills behind town, and a slow coastal calm that is getting harder to find.

Cardwell has the unusual distinction of being one of the only spots on this stretch of coast where the highway runs right along the water, so you get the sea on one side and the green wall of the Cardwell Range on the other. It is an old town by North Queensland standards, one of the first ports established in the north, and it has weathered more than its share of cyclones over the years. There is a definite resilience to the place. It has been knocked down and got back up more than once.

The reason most people come, and the reason we made the trip up into the hills, is the Cardwell Spa Pool. It sits on Scrubby Creek, a few kilometres inland along the Cardwell Forest Drive, and when the conditions are right it is genuinely something to see. The water turns a milky, luminous blue, almost tropical, pooling over pale rock in the middle of the rainforest. We were lucky and caught it at its best, that unreal blue against the green, and it is easy to understand why the place has become the town's signature image.

But, worth knowing before you make the drive. The Spa Pool is fed by rainfall, and the famous blue only shows up when the water is flowing and the light is right. In the dry, or after a long stretch without rain, it can drop to a still green pool or dry back to not much at all. The Instagram photos are all taken on the good days. So check with the Cardwell visitor centre or ask a local before you head up, because a wasted trip to a stagnant puddle is a real possibility, and the blue is very much a matter of timing. When it is on, it is worth every kilometre. When it is off, it is a nice enough spot but not the postcard.

You might wonder what makes the water that colour, and the answer is more interesting than a simple mineral tint. The best explanation scientists offer is a three-step natural process working together. Microscopic plants in the water, phytoplankton, produce fine carbonate minerals as a by-product of photosynthesis. Those carbonates then bind to tiny clay particles suspended in the creek, coating them in reflective minerals like calcite to form a substance called marl.

The marl, along with the phytoplankton itself, scatters and reflects the light, and the result is that milky, luminous blue. It is why the colour depends so completely on conditions: you need flowing water, suspended clay, the plankton doing their work, and good light all at once. Get all four together, and the creek glows. Miss any of them, and it is just a green pool. Which is a long way of saying the blue is alive, in a sense, and that is part of why it never looks quite the same twice.

The Spa Pool is only one stop on the Cardwell Forest Drive, which is worth doing in full if you have the time. The drive winds up into the ranges behind town and takes in a string of creeks, swimming holes and lookouts, including Attie Creek Falls and the Cardwell Lookout, which gives you a wide view back over the town and out to Hinchinbrook Island offshore. It is an easy few hours of pottering, and a good way to see the country that most highway travellers never lay eyes on.

Back down at sea level, we spent time wandering the Cardwell foreshore, which has had a major upgrade in recent years and is a lovely, unhurried stretch. It runs along the water with the mountains at your back and Hinchinbrook Island filling the view across the channel, dotted with Aboriginal art installations, picnic spots and shade. This is Girramay and Bandjin country, among several Traditional Owner groups of this coast, and the art along the foreshore speaks to that connection. We did not walk out onto the jetty this time, but the foreshore walk alone was enough to fill a slow afternoon, watching the light change on the island and the channel.

Cardwell is also the gateway to Hinchinbrook Island, the largest island national park in Australia and home to the famous Thorsborne Trail, a multi-day wilderness walk that draws hikers from around the world. We did not cross this time, but it is the sort of thing that puts a town like this on the map, and it is worth knowing that the quiet little village on the highway is the jumping-off point for one of the great walks in the country.

By the time we left, Cardwell had done what the best small stops do: it gave us more than expected.

Cardwell

Cardwell is a small coastal town in Tropical North Queensland. One of the earliest ports established in North Queensland, it sits on the Hinchinbrook Channel with the Cardwell Range rising directly behind it, and it is one of the few places on the coast where the highway runs right along the sea. Today it is best known for the Cardwell Spa Pool, its recently upgraded foreshore, world-class fishing in the Hinchinbrook Channel, and its role as the gateway to Hinchinbrook Island and the Thorsborne Trail. This is Girramay and Bandjin country.

How to Get There

Cardwell sits directly on the Bruce Highway, about 165 kilometres north of Townsville and 240 kilometres south of Cairns, so it is an easy stop on the main coastal run and impossible to miss, the highway runs right through the middle of town along the waterfront. The road is fully sealed and suitable for all vehicles and motorhomes. The Cardwell Spa Pool and Forest Drive are a few kilometres inland on a sealed then partly unsealed road, check current conditions, while Hinchinbrook Island is reached by ferry and tour operators from the town.

The Spa Pool: Timing Is Everything

The Cardwell Spa Pool is the town’s drawcard, but it comes with a catch worth understanding. The luminous blue water that appears in every photograph is created by minerals and fresh rainfall flowing over the creek’s pale rock, and it only shows up under the right conditions.

After good rain, with water moving through, it is a genuinely striking milky blue in a rainforest setting. In the dry, or after a long dry spell, it can drop to a still green pool or dry back considerably.

It is not a hot spring and not a permanent feature; it is a rain-fed creek pool that happens to turn a remarkable colour when everything lines up. Check with the Cardwell visitor centre or ask locally before you drive up, so you know whether the blue is on. When it is, it is one of the loveliest swimming spots on the coast. Parking is limited, so arrive early, and take everything out with you that you bring in.

When to Visit

The dry season, from about May to October, gives you the reliable, comfortable weather for exploring the Forest Drive and the foreshore, with warm days and low humidity. The catch is that the Spa Pool’s blue depends on rainfall, so the very conditions that make travel easy can leave the pool low.

The shoulder months, when there has been some rain but the roads are still good, can be the sweet spot for catching the blue. The wet season, from November to April, brings heat, humidity, heavy rain and the risk of cyclones and road closures, though it is also when the creeks run their fullest. Whenever you come, check conditions locally.

Final Thoughts

Cardwell is a town well worth a stop. It does not shout, it does not crowd you, and it hands over its best on quiet terms, a blue pool in the green hills, a calm coast with an island filling the view, and the easy pace of a place that has seen a lot and settled into itself. We came expecting a quick overnight stop and left having found one of the more restful stops on the whole run north. Sometimes the towns everyone drives past are exactly the ones worth staying in.

Salt Water crocodiles: This is croc country. The Hinchinbrook Channel and coastal creeks are saltwater crocodile habitat. Do not swim in the channel or the tidal creeks, and heed the signs.

The Spa Pool rocks: The pale rock around the pool is slippery, and water levels and flow change with rain. Check depth before entering and watch your footing.

The heat and sun: Tropical North Queensland turns it on. Hat, water, and do the walking and driving in the cooler part of the day.

Marine stingers: The sea here can carry box jellyfish and irukandji in the warmer months. Do not swim off the beach in stinger season without protection, and follow local advice.

St Lawrence: Lasagna, Mates and Old Boilers

Some towns you pass through once and forget. St Lawrence is one we keep coming back to. This little town sits between Mackay and Rockhampton, just off the Bruce Highway, and it is easy to miss. Most people barrel past on the highway without ever knowing it’s there. We have stopped twice now, and the second visit only deepened the soft spot we already had for the place. It has a good camp, a genuinely warm community, more history than a town this size has any right to, and this time, it had lasagna!

We came back to St Lawrence to catch up with one of our good mates, who calls the town home. That is a fine reason to visit anywhere, and it turned an overnight into a proper couple of days. We rolled into the St Lawrence Recreation Grounds, the community-run camp on the edge of town beside the wetlands, and set up for two nights. It is the sort of camp we love: level, grassy, quiet, walking distance to everything, run on a modest honesty-box fee, with hot showers and covered seating looking out over the wetland. Kangaroos graze the grounds at dawn and dusk, and the birds do the rest. You could not design a more relaxing spot if you tried.

And then we got lucky. We had arrived on a Friday, which, every so often in St Lawrence, means lasagna night. For fifteen dollars we were handed the single largest serving of lasagna, chips and salad either of us has ever seen. But the food was only half of it. The rec ground on a Friday night is where the town comes together, travellers and locals sharing tables and stories, and our mate joined us for dinner in the thick of it. There is a particular pleasure in a country town that does this, that still gathers on a Friday to eat too much and talk, and lets whoever is passing through pull up a chair.

After a good cuppa and a long chinwag, our mate did the thing you can only get in a town where you know someone. He took us on the local’s tour. Not the highway version of St Lawrence, the real one. We wandered down to the wetlands, out along the river, checked out the old cemetery and then to the part that stopped us both, the old boilers.‍

Down Settlement Road, near the Newport Conservation Park, sits a scatter of rusting iron boilers and machinery in the bush, and they look for all the world like some rusted sculpture garden. They are the remains of St Lawrence’s industrial heart, and the story behind them is remarkable for such a quiet place. St Lawrence began in the 1860s as a tallow works, rendering cattle into tallow in the days before refrigeration. By the 1890s it had grown into a full meatworks, salting, canning and preserving beef that was loaded onto ships at the town’s own wharf, much of it bought to feed crews on long voyages with no way to keep fresh meat. The works ran until around 1911, when remoteness, drought and competition finally closed it down, and the machinery was dismantled and sold. What is left is those boilers, quietly rusting where they stood, a century-old reminder that this sleepy town was once a working port sending preserved meat out across the sea.

There is a reason a port grew here at all, and it is written in the tides. St Lawrence sits on Broad Sound, which has a tidal range of around nine metres, the largest on the entire east coast of Australia. The water comes and goes on a scale that is hard to picture until you see it, and it shaped everything: the port, the creeks, the wetlands, the whole character of the place. The town took its name from the creek, which some say was named for the St Lawrence River in Canada because of those same extreme tides.

‍He also showed us the barra spot. And no, before you ask, we are absolutely not telling you where it is. That is the deal with a local’s spot. You are shown it in confidence, and you take its location to your grave. All we will say is that it exists, that it is a good one, and that our mate has our eternal loyalty for sharing it. If you want to know where the barra are biting around St Lawrence, you’ll have to do what we did, and make a friend in town.

Between bouts of touring, there was the small matter of Neil’s raffle win. On the Friday night Neil won the meat tray, which is a fine thing to win anywhere in Australia, except that Neil does not eat meat. So the honour, and the duty, fell to Cameron and our mate, who cooked the steaks to perfection on the barbecue between wanders around town. It is the sort of small, silly, perfect thing that makes a stop stick, a semi-vegetarian winning a meat tray in a cattle town, and his mates happily accepting the burden. Of course, there is more to St Lawrence than boilers and lasagna. The wetlands are the town’s natural drawcard, freshwater habitats alive with birds, brolgas among them, best on the walking track from the camp out to the viewing platform, gazebo and all, which is a fine place to see the sun go down. The town has held onto its old bones too, heritage buildings from its days as a customs port, the restored railway building, the old council office. Once a year the whole place comes alive for the St Lawrence Wetlands Weekend, a music and community festival that fills the rec grounds. And the town was, for decades, a steam-age refreshment stop on the North Coast railway, so the odd train still rattles through, a sound we rather liked from the camp.

We left St Lawrence the way we always seem to when we fall for a town, reluctantly, and already thinking about the next time. It is not a town that performs for visitors. It just gets on with being itself, and lets you in if you take the time. Good mates, a giant plate of lasagna, a steak that should have been Neil’s, and a set of old boilers with a story to tell. That is a very good couple of days by any measure.

St Lawrence

St Lawrence is a small rural town midway between Mackay and Rockhampton in Central Queensland, just off the Bruce Highway. One of the oldest towns on the Queensland coast, it began in the 1860s as a tallow and boiling-down works, grew into a meatworks and port, and served as a customs station and a steam-age railway refreshment stop. Today it is a quiet community of a few hundred people, best known for its wetlands and birdlife, its heritage-listed former meatworks, and a welcoming community-run camp at the recreation grounds. It sits on Broad Sound, which has the largest tidal range on the east coast of Australia.

How to Get There

St Lawrence is just off the Bruce Highway, roughly midway between Mackay (about 150km north) and Rockhampton (about 160km south), an easy stop on the main coastal run. The turn-off is well signed. The St Lawrence Connection Road into town is 6.5km and sealed, suitable for all vehicles and rigs. The town and the recreation grounds are a short distance in from the highway, and everything in town is within an easy walk once you are there.

Camped two nights at the St Lawrence Recreation Grounds beside the wetlands.
Turned up on a Friday for the community lasagna night at the rec ground.
Caught up with a mate, who gave us the local'’ tour of town.
Explored the wetlands and the river, and explored the historic former Meatworks and Wharf Site, heritage-listed, on Settlement Road near Newport Conservation Park.
Visited the St Lawrence Wetlands, with walking track, viewing platform and gazebo, excellent for birdwatching.

A Working Port in a Quiet Town

It is hard to picture now, but St Lawrence was once an industrial port. It started in the 1860s as a tallow works, boiling cattle down for tallow in the days before refrigeration made fresh export possible. By the 1890s it had become a full meatworks, salting, canning and preserving beef that was loaded onto ships at the town's wharf, a good deal of it bought to feed crews on long sea voyages. The operation ran until around 1911, when the town's remoteness, drought years and competition from better-placed works finally closed it. The machinery was dismantled and sold, and what remains today is a scatter of great rusting boilers in the bush off Settlement Road, one of them a rare surviving donkey boiler. They are heritage-listed now, and worth the short trip to see, a genuinely evocative reminder of the industry that built the town.

When to Visit

The dry season, from about April to September, gives the most comfortable weather for camping and exploring, with mild days and cool nights. For the wetlands specifically, the birdlife is richest after the wet, roughly January to April, when water levels are up, though you will still see plenty through the drier months. The town is busiest during the St Lawrence Wetlands Weekend, usually mid-year, when the rec grounds fill up and booking ahead is wise. And if you can time it for a random Friday, do; the lasagna night alone is worth planning around.

Final Thoughts

St Lawrence is proof that the best stops are often the ones nobody tells you about. Twice now it has given us more than we expected: good company, ridiculous quantities of lasagna, a slice of forgotten industrial history, and the deep quiet of a town content to be exactly what it is. We will be back. There is always a reason to return to a place where you have a mate, a camp you love, and the standing possibility of a Friday night lasagna.

Things That Could Kill You (Probably Won’t)

A semi-serious guide to surviving Australia. Mostly common sense, occasionally luck.

Saltwater crocodiles: This is croc country, so this is a serious warning. The tidal creeks and Broad Sound are saltwater crocodile habitat. Do not swim in the creeks or near the mangroves, and heed the signs.

The big tides: Broad Sound has the largest tidal range on the east coast, around nine metres. If you are fishing or exploring the creeks and flats, know the tide; it comes in fast and far.

Large kangaroos: The roos around the rec ground and wetlands are notably big. Give them room, especially on the path to the viewing deck, and watch for them on the roads at dawn and dusk.

Overeating: On lasagna night, the servings are enormous, and the value is absurd. Pace yourself…We did not!

Paronella Park: One Man's Impossible Dream

Tucked into the rainforest beside Mena Creek, south of Innisfail, it is a Spanish castle in the Queensland jungle, a crumbling, moss-covered, utterly romantic ruin that should not exist and yet somehow does. It had been on our list for years, so this time we did it properly. We bought the full package, stayed on site, and did both the day tour and the night tour. And we left understanding why people talk about this place the way they do. You can still see the dream in it. That’s the thing that gets you.

Paronella Park is the work of one man, and the story is as remarkable as the ruins. José Paronella was a young Catalan who arrived in Australia in 1913 with almost nothing and a head full of a dream he had carried since childhood, a castle of his own. For eleven years he cut sugar cane and then bought, improved and sold cane farms, slowly building a fortune. He returned to Spain, married his Margarita, and brought her back to Queensland. And then, in 1929, he bought the piece of land he had first laid eyes on years before, thirteen acres of dense virgin rainforest beside a waterfall on Mena Creek. Standing by the falls, the story goes, he crossed himself and thought this was the most beautiful place on earth. Then he set about building his castle in it.

What he made, mostly by hand and with the help of local cane cutters, is astonishing. A grand reception hall and ballroom. A cinema that showed films every Saturday night, with a great mirror ball throwing pink and blue light across the dance floor. Tennis courts, bridges, a fountain, refreshment rooms, a museum, and a famous Tunnel of Love. A grand staircase of forty-seven steps cut into the hillside. And around it all, an avenue of kauri pines and more than seven thousand tropical plants and trees, planted by hand, that now tower over the ruins like the pillars of a cathedral. The castle itself was built of concrete reinforced with old railway track, the final coat smoothed on by hand, and if you look closely you can still find the fingerprints of the people who built it pressed into the cement. He even built North Queensland's first hydro-electric plant to power the whole thing. Paronella Park opened to the public in 1935, and for a while it was the place to be, the whole district coming out to dance and swim and watch movies in the rainforest.

José did not get to enjoy it for long. He died in 1948, and after that the park met a long run of misfortune: a major fire, cyclones, and repeated floods off Mena Creek, each one taking another bite out of the buildings. What stands today is a ruin, and that is precisely its magic. Nature has moved back in, draping the walls in moss and fig roots and filtered green light, and the effect is something no architect could design. It feels less like a building and more like something the rainforest half-remembers. The current owners have wisely chosen to let it be a romantic ruin rather than restore it to new, and it is all the more beautiful for it.

We did the day tour first, the guided walk that tells José’s story as you move through the grounds, and it is worth doing because the place means so much more once you know the man behind it. Then we stayed for the night tour, and if you only do one, honestly, do both, but the night tour is the one you will remember longest. After dark, the ruins are lit softly, the falls are floodlit, and the whole park takes on a hushed, enchanted quality. Walking the grand staircase at night, with the water thundering and the castle glowing through the trees, is the sort of experience you do not forget. We stayed on site at the caravan park, which meant we could wander in for the night tour and not have to drive anywhere afterwards, and we would recommend that to anyone. Give Paronella more than a quick daytime hour. It’s worth the time.

By the end we understood the phrase people use for this place, the impossible dream. José Paronella imagined a castle in a rainforest at the other end of the earth from where he was born, and then he built it, by hand, and filled it with music and light and people. The buildings are ruins now, but the dream is not. You can feel it in every mossy staircase and every hand-planted tree. Paronella Park is not just one of the most beautiful places in Far North Queensland. It is one of the most human.

Paronella Park

Paronella Park is a heritage-listed Spanish-style castle and rainforest garden at Mena Creek, in the Cassowary Coast region of Far North Queensland. Built by hand in the 1930s by Catalan immigrant José Paronella, it opened as a public pleasure garden in 1935, complete with a castle, ballroom, cinema, tennis courts and North Queensland’s first hydro-electric plant, all set beside the Mena Creek Falls. Fire, cyclones and floods have since reduced much of it to a romantic ruin, and today it is one of Queensland’s most awarded and best-loved attractions, National Trust listed and run as an eco-accredited tourism park.

How to Get There

Paronella Park is at 1671 Innisfail-Japoon Road, Mena Creek, in Far North Queensland. It is an easy and well-signed drive from several directions, and it makes a natural stop on the coastal run between Townsville and Cairns. From Innisfail, it is about 8 kilometres south-west, roughly a 20-minute drive on the old highway route via Mena Creek. From Cairns, it is about 120 kilometres, or around a 90-minute drive south. Coming up from the south, it is roughly an hour and a half from Cardwell and about an hour from Tully. If you are coming down off the Atherton Tablelands, take the Palmerston Highway and turn onto Japoon Road at the bottom of the hill, then follow the signs. The roads are all sealed and suitable for all vehicles, and there is parking for larger rigs.

The dry season, from about May to October, offers the most comfortable weather for exploring the park, with warm days and lower humidity. The falls are at their most powerful after rain, so a visit following wet weather gives you Mena Creek in full flow, though the wet season overall brings heat, humidity and the chance of closures. The park is open all year except Christmas Day. Whenever you go, the night tour runs daily and is worth building your visit around, so consider staying nearby or on site so you can do both the day and night tours without a long drive between them.

Final Thoughts

We had waited a long time to see Paronella Park, and it did not disappoint. There is something profoundly moving about a ruined dream that still glows, a castle built by hand in a jungle by a man who simply would not let go of an idea. Do the day tour for the story, and the night tour for the feeling. Stay nearby so you are not rushing. And give yourself a moment on the grand staircase, in the green light with the falls in your ears, to think about what one determined person built here, and how beautifully the rainforest has claimed it back.

Wallaman Falls & Big Crystal Creek: Two Kinds of Falling Water

North of Townsville, the water starts to show off. We spent this stretch of the country chasing two very different versions of it. One you swim in. One leaves you standing at a railing, feeling very small. Big Crystal Creek and Wallaman Falls sit in the same World Heritage rainforest, a couple of hours apart, and between them they show you both faces of the wet tropics.

We started with the swimmable one. Big Crystal Creek sits in the Paluma Range National Park, up behind the coast north of Townsville, and it is one of those places that looks staged, except it is entirely real. Clear water running over smooth granite, deep enough to swim, shaded by rainforest, with a proper day-use area and a camping ground that makes it easy to stay a while.

Rockslide, the main swimming hole, is the drawcard, a broad clear pool with rocks to laze on and water cool enough to be a genuine relief in the tropical heat. But the real pleasure was having time to explore beyond it, following the creek down through the forest, watching the water find its way toward the coast. There is a particular calm to a rainforest creek, the green light, the sound of moving water, the birds you hear long before you see them.

Then we drove north for a completely different sort of water.

Wallaman Falls is about two hours up the road, inland from the sugar town of Ingham, and it is not a swimming hole. It is the tallest single-drop waterfall in Australia. Stony Creek runs quietly through the rainforest and then, without much warning, throws itself off a cliff and falls 268 metres into the gorge below, turning to mist on the way down. Standing at the main lookout, a short walk from the car park, you get the full scale of it in one hit, and it genuinely stops you. The water falls so far that it is fog by the time it reaches the bottom, and on a good day the sun catches that mist and hangs a rainbow across the gorge.

The lookout alone is worth the drive, but if you have the knees for it, the Djyinda walk takes you down to the base, a steep four-kilometre return on unstable ground that trades easy views for the roar of the water up close. We stood at the top and took it in, the green gorge dropping away, the Herbert River valley beyond, and that single silver line of water going down and down and down. Some places you photograph. Some you just stand in awe. This was both.

Wallaman sits in Girringun National Park, deep in Wet Tropics World Heritage rainforest, and it is Warrgamay country. There is a campground by Stony Creek above the falls if you want to stay, though the road up is steep, narrow and winding, sealed but not built for big rigs, so check what your setup can handle before you commit.

Between them, these two stops are the wet tropics in miniature. Big Crystal Creek is the water you get into, cool and clear and unhurried. Wallaman is the water you stand back from, enormous and loud and old. We came north out of the dry and found both within a couple of days of each other, and we left understanding this corner of Queensland a good deal better than when we arrived.

Big Crystal Creek & Wallaman Falls

Big Crystal Creek and Wallaman Falls are two of the standout water stops in the World Heritage rainforest north of Townsville. Big Crystal Creek, in the Paluma Range National Park about 70 kilometres north of Townsville, is a clear rainforest swimming hole with a popular pool known as Rockslide, a day-use area and a camping ground.

Wallaman Falls, in Girringun National Park inland from Ingham, is the tallest single-drop waterfall in Australia, plunging 269 metres into a rainforest gorge. Together they make a natural pair for anyone travelling the coast between Townsville and Ingham, one to swim in, one to stand in awe of.

How to Get There

Big Crystal Creek is about 70 kilometres north of Townsville. Head north on the Bruce Highway, turn off toward the Paluma Range, and follow the signs into the day-use and camping area. The access road is sealed and suitable for most vehicles.

Wallaman Falls is roughly 50 kilometres west of Ingham, which is itself about 110 kilometres north of Big Crystal Creek up the Bruce Highway. From Ingham, follow the signs through Trebonne and up the range. The road climbs steeply and is narrow and winding, sealed but slippery when wet, with some sources noting an unsealed final stretch depending on the route. It is not recommended for caravans or large rigs, and the lookout and campground sit on different forks near the top. If you are towing, the TYTO centre in Ingham allows day parking so you can leave the van and drive up.

What to See and Do

Drove up to Wallaman Falls and took in the main lookout.
Stood a long while at the top, watching Australia's tallest single drop fall into the gorge.

When to Visit

The dry season, from about May to September, is the best time. The roads are more reliable, the walking tracks safer underfoot, and the humidity is bearable. The falls run year-round but are at their most dramatic after the wet, when Stony Creek is full, though the wet season also brings road closures, slippery tracks and higher risk on the steep descent. Note that parts of Girringun, including the Wallaman camping area and sections of the Great Walk, close for periods through the year, so check current park conditions before you go.

Final Thoughts

We came north chasing cooler air and greener country, and these two stops gave us the best of both. There is something satisfying about seeing water do two completely different things in the space of a few days, one you float in without a care, the other so vast and loud it makes you go quiet. The wet tropics north of Townsville does not shout about itself the way the reef does. But get in among the rainforest and the running water, and it rewards you every time.

Keep heading north and the Bruce Highway carries on toward Cardwell, Tully and the far north. Inland, the Paluma Range and Girringun National Park hold far more rainforest, walks and water than a single trip can cover, which is reason enough to come back.

The Wallaman road: Steep, narrow, winding and slippery when wet. Take it slow, watch for oncoming traffic and cassowaries, and do not take a big rig up.

The Djyinda descent: The walk to the base of the falls is steep, on unstable ground, and harder coming back up than going down. Know your limits and carry water.

Creek swimming: Big Crystal Creek is generally safe, but water levels and currents change with rain. Check conditions, never jump into water you have not checked for depth, and mind the slippery rocks.

Cassowaries: You may see one in the rainforest sections. Admire from a distance, never feed them, and give them room. They are large, wild, and not to be trifled with.

Townsville: Back in the Big City

After weeks of small towns and quiet camps, Townsville came as a shock to the system. All of a sudden we were in a proper city again, with traffic and shopping centres, and it took us a day to adjust to the pace. Given a few days and a bit of patience, this big tropical city on the North Queensland coast turned out to have far more to it than we expected, and it kept us busy without ever feeling like hard work.

Townsville sits on the coast about halfway between Brisbane and Cairns, the unofficial capital of North Queensland and the gateway to the reef, Magnetic Island and the wet tropics beyond. It is a defence city, a university city and a port, and it wears all of that under a lot of sunshine. We based ourselves here for a few days to catch our breath, restock, and see what the place had to offer. It offered plenty.

We got our bearings the way everyone does, by heading to the nearest hill. Castle Hill is the great pink granite monolith that sits right in the middle of town, and you can walk or drive to the top for a 360-degree view over the city, the coast, and Magnetic Island shimmering offshore. We drove up and wandered the lookout platforms, picking out the Strand below, the port, the ranges inland. It is the best possible introduction to the city, the whole layout laid out beneath you in one sweep, and it is worth timing for early morning or late afternoon when the light is good, and the heat is bearable.

Down at sea level, the Strand is the heart of Townsville, and we spent a good chunk of our time here. It is a two-kilometre palm-lined promenade along the waterfront, with a saltwater rock pool, a water park for kids, shady lawns and memorials, and the blue of Cleveland Bay stretching out toward Magnetic Island. We wandered the length of Strand Park, took our time, and stopped in at the Tobruk Kiosk by the memorial pool for a cuppa and a sit in the shade. It is the sort of place that makes a city feel liveable, an easy, unhurried stretch of coast right on the edge of the CBD.

For history and science, we spent a couple of hours at the Queensland Museum Tropics, formerly the Museum of Tropical Queensland. It is an excellent regional museum, with strong exhibitions on the Great Barrier Reef, the rainforest, and the maritime history of the coast, including the wreck of the Pandora. It is well done, air-conditioned, and a good rainy-day or beat-the-heat option in a city that can turn on the humidity.

Being the aviation-minded sort, we also made time for the RAAF Townsville Museum and did some plane spotting while we were at it. Townsville is a major air force base, and the museum tells the story of the RAAF in the north, from the war years onward. Watching aircraft come and go over the city is a small pleasure in its own right, and if you have any interest in planes, it is an easy and rewarding stop. Although by the time we left, we were a little tired of the sound of Chinook Helicopters.

The highlight for us, though, and for Zoe, was the Palmetum. It is one of Townsville's three botanic gardens, and it holds one of the largest and most diverse public collections of palms in the world. But the real draw was that it is dog-friendly, so Zoe could come along, on lead, for a slow shaded wander through the rainforest section, past the lagoon and the savannah plantings. After a few days of city pavement, it was exactly the cool green break all three of us needed, and we happily lost a couple of hours.

We did not make it across to Magnetic Island this time, which was purely a Zoe logistics decision. Getting a dog across on the ferry and sorted on the island was more than we wanted to take on for this visit, and the island is national park territory in large part, so we left it for another trip. That is worth knowing if you travel with a dog; the island is a wonderful day out, but it takes a bit more planning with a pooch in tow, and there is more than enough on the mainland to fill several days without it.

There was a practical side to our stop, too, and this is where a big city earns its keep. Life on the road is hard on a vehicle, and by the time we reached Townsville we had a list. Two windscreens needing replacement, an AC power inlet to sort, a decal to repair, and the usual restock and general shopping that piles up when you have been out bush for a while. Townsville handled all of it without fuss. After weeks of small towns where the nearest windscreen fitter might be three hundred kilometres away, there is something quietly satisfying about rolling into a city and knocking the whole list over in a couple of days. It is not the glamorous part of travel, but it is a real part of it, and Townsville has everything you need to get yourself sorted and roadworthy again before pushing on.

By the end, Townsville had won us over (mostly). It is not a quiet town, and it does not pretend to be, but it is an easy, warm city with good gardens, a beautiful waterfront, solid museums and a big sky over the top of it all. After the small-town run that came before it, we were glad of the change of pace. And glad, too, when it was time to point north again and get back to the quiet.

Townsville

Townsville is the largest city in North Queensland, on the coast roughly midway between Brisbane and Cairns. A defence, university and port city, it is the gateway to Magnetic Island, the Great Barrier Reef and the wet tropics rainforest inland. Its landmarks are Castle Hill, the pink granite monolith at its centre, and the Strand, the palm-lined waterfront promenade. Beyond those it has good museums, three botanic gardens, a lively food and laneway scene, and a warm, dry tropical climate that makes the dry-season months especially pleasant. This is the country of the Wulgurukaba and Bindal peoples.

How to Get There

Townsville is on the Bruce Highway, about 1,350 kilometres north of Brisbane and 350 kilometres south of Cairns, and it is a major regional hub, so access is easy from every direction. The highway is fully sealed and suitable for all vehicles and motorhomes. Townsville Airport has regular flights from Brisbane, Cairns and other capitals, and the Spirit of Queensland train stops here on the Brisbane to Cairns line. In town, the main sights are close together, though a vehicle helps for the botanic gardens and the drive up Castle Hill.

When to Visit

The dry season, from about May to October, is the best time to visit Townsville, with warm, dry days, low humidity and comfortable nights. This is peak season, so the city is busier, but the weather is worth it. The wet season, from November to April, brings heat, humidity and the chance of storms and heavy rain. Townsville is one of the sunniest cities in Queensland year-round, but the dry season is when the Strand, the gardens and Castle Hill are at their most enjoyable.

Final Thoughts

We came to Townsville expecting to restock and move on, and stayed longer than we meant to. There is a lot to like here. The view from Castle Hill, the long easy stretch of the Strand, a cool wander through the palms with the dog, and the sense of a city that is comfortable in its own skin. It is not the quiet we usually chase, but every now and then a good city is exactly the right thing, and Townsville is a very good city. We left rested, restocked, and ready for the road north.

Inland, the Overlander’s Way runs west through Charters Towers and dinosaur country toward the outback. And just offshore, Magnetic Island is an easy day trip for anyone travelling without a dog. Townsville makes a natural base for exploring any of them.

We’ve been sitting on this news for a while now, quietly building it in the background while the blog, the newsletter, and everything else kept ticking along as normal. It’s strange to finally say it out loud:

Where it came from

Off the Main Road started as a way to document the Australia we were seeing: the back roads, the campsites, the towns most people drive straight past. Over time it grew into something bigger than we expected, an actual audience of people who wanted the same kind of travel we do. Slow, considered, and off the highway.

We wanted something that would sit around for longer than a quick read.

Something that felt like an object rather than a page load, that can be shared with family and fellow travellers.

Something you can pick up, put down and open again later with a cuppa in hand while it takes you somewhere else entirely.

We’ve built a digital edition too, because convenience matters, but if I’m honest, print is where my heart’s always been. That’s where the magazine came from. Not a rebrand, not a pivot away from the website. An extension of the same thing we’ve always been doing, in a format that gives the photography and the stories more room to breathe.

The magazine

Off the Main Road Magazine is a glossy, photography-led magazine for slow travel through the outback and regional Australia.

Published every six months in print and digital form, it follows the real routes, campsites, and stories of full-time travellers on the road. Not a quick-hit travel guide, but a magazine built to be looked at as much as read.

Every image is shot on the road, not sourced from a stock library. Every story comes from lived experience, not a press release.

The first issue

Issue #1 is the Outback Edition, 68 pages covering outback Queensland and the Northern Territory. It’s the area we’ve spent the most time in over the last while, so it felt like the natural place to start.

Inside you’ll find full journey pieces through the Heart of Queensland and Gulf Country, a run north on the Stuart Highway, a Traveller's Notes spread on the Matilda Way, town features on Charleville and Lightning Ridge, and a new recurring photography segment we're genuinely excited about. There's no padding in there, no filler content added just to hit a page count. Everything made the cut because it earned its place.

Neil's photography runs through the whole thing. A lot of the images have been sitting in our archive for months, waiting for a format that could actually do them justice.

How it works

Off the Main Road Magazine will be released every six months, in both digital and print form. Issue #2, the Coastal Edition, is already being planned for an early release in December, with Issue #3, the Inland Edition, to follow.

We’re launching in early August. Trial print copies have already landed, and we’re just making sure the print quality is right before committing to the full run.

The Trip That Started It All

A Reflection from the Road

Everyone has a trip that changes them.

Mine was in 2010. With my dad, his 4WD and two tents, we headed into the outback so he could show me the country he loved, and so I could finally see it through his eyes. I did not know it at the time, but that trip would set the course for everything that came after. It is one of the reasons I do what I do now.

We had a loose plan and a firm goal. The plan was to camp our way north and west into the proper outback, the real thing, not the edges of it. The goal was Cooper Creek, in flood, crossing the Birdsville Track. Dad loved that part of the world, and I had heard that the Cooper Creek was running, which rarely happens. So we packed the tents and went.

We headed up to Mungo National Park first, out in the far west of New South Wales. The Walls of China at last light, the pale eroded dunes going gold and then pink, the silence so complete you could hear your own blood. I got it immediately.

I had a camera with me, nothing flash, and I stood out there trying to catch what the light was doing and knowing, even then, that I would never quite manage it. That was the moment the country got hold of me and did not let go.

From Mungo we pushed on to Broken Hill, a strange, proud mining city out on its own, and then across and up to Marree, where the bitumen gives up, and the great tracks begin. Marree is where the Oodnadatta and the Birdsville Tracks meet, and standing there with a fuel tank full and a long dirt road ahead is one of those feelings you do not forget.

And then the Cooper. It had done the rare thing and flooded the Birdsville Track, which it manages maybe once in twenty years, and the crossing was cut. In its place, a government punt was running, ferrying vehicles across the floodwater on a detour via Etadunna Station. We took it, our loaded vehicle floating across a flooded creek in the middle of the desert, and I remember Dad grinning like a kid. There has been a punt on the Cooper in the big floods since 1949, when a barge called the Tom Brennan first carried the outback mail across for the legendary Tom Kruse. We were, without quite realising it, part of a long line of people who had been floated over that same reluctant creek.

We had planned to push up to Birdsville, but the track had other ideas. The roads north were closed. So we did what I have done many times since: looked at the map and changed our plans.

We turned instead toward Kati Thanda-Lake Eyre, the great salt lake that only fills in the rare wet years and was, that season, holding water. To stand at the edge of an inland sea that spends most of its life as a dry white pan, and to see it shining, was not something either of us had expected to get. The outback gives and takes on its own terms. Close a road, open a lake.

I took hundreds of photos on that trip, most of them not very good, many of them lost to time and dodgy hard drives. But somewhere in the making of them, out on the Walls of China, in the Mungo Woolshed, on the edge of Lake Eyre and the banks of the flooded Cooper, I found the thing I have been chasing ever since: the light, the distance, the enormous quiet, the big skies. Landscape photography and remote travel both took hold of me on that trip, and neither has let go. Off the Main Road, in a real sense, started in those two tents in 2010.

Here is the part that gets me now. That punt we crossed on is gone. The old ferry was pulled from the Cooper years back, left to rust, and finally vandalised beyond use. When the record floods came through in 2025, the biggest in a generation, there was no punt to run, and the government had to build a whole new barge to reconnect the track.

The Cooper we crossed, in the way we crossed it, cannot be crossed that way anymore.

Which is how the outback works, I suppose. Nothing stays the same, not the water, not the roads, not the crossings, not us. You get the trip you get, in the year you get it, and if you are very lucky you are standing next to the right person when it happens.

Hughenden: Dinosaurs and a Blazed Tree

Zoe made the decision for us a couple of weeks ago. The Northern Territory had turned on the sort of heat that a solid English staffy simply will not tolerate, and somewhere north of the border she let us know, in the way dogs do, that she had had quite enough of it. So we turned the moho south, then east, and started the long trek back toward the coast and cooler air. After we left the territory, a couple of nights at Mary Kathleen and then Julia Creek, Hughenden was where we stopped to catch our breath.

We had come this way before, tracing the Overlander’s Way, but last time we drove through it was a fleeting morning tea break. This time we pulled in and stayed, taking advantage of the free RV camp beside the showgrounds, a short and welcome stroll from the main street. After the wide empty runs of the outback, there is something restful about a small town where everything is a few minutes' walk from everything else. We had come off an overnight stop at Julia Creek the day before, and Hughenden felt like the right place to slow down and give Zoe and ourselves a proper day off.

Hughenden sits on the banks of the Flinders River, Queensland’s longest, out on the flat plains west of Townsville. It is quiet, it wears its history plainly, and it turns out to be sitting on top of something remarkable. This is the edge of an ancient inland sea, and the country around here is thick with fossils. Hughenden is a stop on Australia’s Dinosaur Trail, and it takes that very seriously.

At the Flinders Discovery Centre we spent a couple of good hours among the fossils, with the centrepiece a life-size replica of Hughie, Muttaburrasaurus, a big plant-eating dinosaur whose bones were found in this district. It is a genuinely impressive thing to stand next to, and all around it is the story of the inland sea, the creatures that lived and died here, and how a corner of dry outback Queensland came to be one of the country’s richest fossil grounds. There is a good display on the sheep and shearing years too, the hard grind of the industry that built the town.

Out in the streets, Hughenden is a quiet, interesting gallery of street art. We wandered the town following its sculptures and street art, much of it built around old windmill blades, and it speaks well to the country it comes from, the cattle, the birds, the pioneers, the land itself. It is the sort of public art that feels like it grew out of the place rather than being dropped onto it. A slow wander with a camera is time well spent.

On the way back to the moho we strolled past the recreation lake, and there we found the thing we have thought about most since. A coolibah tree, old and gnarled, that was blazed by Frederick Walker in 1861 and again by William Landsborough in 1862, both of them passing through on the search for the lost explorers Burke and Wills. The story behind those two blazes is worth knowing.

In 1860 Robert O'Hara Burke and William John Wills set out from Melbourne to cross the continent from south to north, the first Europeans to attempt it. They reached the top, near the Gulf of Carpentaria, but the expedition unravelled on the way back through a grim run of bad luck and worse decisions, and both men died near Cooper Creek in 1861, having very nearly made it home. When word got out that they were missing, relief parties fanned out across the inland to look for them. Frederick Walker led one up from Rockhampton, and William Landsborough came down from the Gulf, and both, at different times, camped here on the banks of what is now Station Creek and cut their mark into this same tree. Neither found Burke or Wills alive. But in crisscrossing the country to search, men like these opened up the grazing plains that would become towns like Hughenden, which is a strange and typically Australian sort of legacy, a town that exists in part because of a search that failed. Standing in front of the tree, you are looking at a living link to all of it, a trunk these men blazed more than a hundred and sixty years ago, still growing beside the creek.

There is more to Hughenden that we did not get to. We didn’t drive up Mount Walker, known locally as Tower Hill, for the sunset, and we did not make it out to Porcupine Gorge, the spectacular canyon north of town that is occasionally called Australia’s Little Grand Canyon. Both meant leaving Zoe too long in the heat, and neither felt fair on her. So we have left them for next time, which is no problem. A reason to come back to a good town is not the worst thing to carry away.

Hughenden

Hughenden is a small town on the Flinders River in outback Queensland. It grew up as a railhead and grazing centre and today is best known as dinosaur country, a key stop on Australia’s Dinosaur Trail, sitting on the edge of an ancient inland sea rich with fossils. The town has a free RV camp, a well-regarded fossil museum, a lake, and a strong thread of public art running through its streets. It is the gateway to Porcupine Gorge National Park and a natural resting point on the run between Townsville and the western outback.

How to Get There

Hughenden sits on the Flinders Highway, the Overlander's Way, roughly 380 kilometres west of Townsville and about 250 kilometres east of Richmond. The highway is sealed the whole way and suitable for all vehicles. The town is also on the Inlander train line between Townsville and Mount Isa. It makes a natural overnight or day stop on the east-west run, and the free RV camp beside the showgrounds is an easy walk from the main street.

What to See and Do

Richmond and Winton further along the Dinosaur Trail, for more fossils and outback history.

When to Visit

The cooler, drier months from April to September are the pick, with mild days and comfortable nights, and the best conditions for exploring Porcupine Gorge and the lookouts. Summer out here is fierce, hot and dry with the odd big storm, and it was exactly that heat that sent us east in the first place. If you are travelling with a dog, plan around the temperature the way we did, and save the exposed walks and drives for the cool of the day.

Final Thoughts

Hughenden turned out to be just what we needed, a quiet, walkable town with more under the surface than you would guess from the highway. Dinosaurs, explorers, shearers and a tree with a story carved into it, all in an easy day on foot. We came to give Zoe a break from the heat and left having stumbled into a proper slice of outback Queensland. And we drove out already half-planning the return trip, the one where we finally see the gorge.

Hughenden sits on the Overlander’s Way, the long east-west run we have travelled before. To the east the highway heads back toward Townsville and the coast, our direction of travel this time as we chased cooler air for Zoe.

To the west it carries on through Richmond and toward Mount Isa and the Territory. North of town, Porcupine Gorge is reason enough to plan a return, and the smaller Flinders Shire towns are worth a look for anyone with the time.

The heat: The reason we came east. Outback Queensland summers are punishing, especially for dogs and kids. Travel and walk in the cool of the day and carry plenty of water.

Porcupine Gorge: Beautiful, and steep. The descent into the gorge is a real walk with unfenced edges up top. Watch your footing and keep back from the rim.

The highway: Long distances, road trains and wandering stock. Watch for wildlife at dawn and dusk on the Overlander’s Way.

Dehydration: Dry heat sneaks up on you out here. Drink more than you think you need, and keep the dog watered and shaded.

We first passed through Batchelor a couple of years ago, on our way to Litchfield like everyone else. We stopped, took plenty of photos, filled a notebook, and then, as happens, never got around to writing about it. The notes sat. But our recent visit to the old uranium ghost town of Mary Kathleen out in Queensland brought it all back, the strange Cold War history of uranium in this country, and with it the story of Rum Jungle and the quietly fascinating town it left behind. So here, at last, is Batchelor.

There is not a lot to Batchelor, and that is rather the point. Most people barrel straight through it on the way to Litchfield National Park, and never notice that this quiet little town has a stranger, richer story packed into its few streets than almost anywhere else on the way to Darwin. A Czech castle. A Cold War uranium mine. A wartime airfield where an American general first set foot on Australian soil. We stopped for a look and stayed a couple of days.

Batchelor sits about 98 kilometres south of Darwin, just off the Stuart Highway, and for most travellers, it is the last stop before the waterfalls and swimming holes of Litchfield. It is a green, orderly, slightly sleepy place, and nothing about the main street tells you what went on here. But Batchelor exists at all because of what came out of the ground just up the road, and the whole town is really a monument to a very particular slice of Australian history.

The first surprise is the castle. In the middle of town, in a park named for the man who built it, stands a five-metre replica of Karlstejn Castle, a Gothic fortress southeast of Prague that once guarded the crown jewels of the Holy Roman Empire. It is the last thing you expect to find in a small Territory town, and the story behind it is better than the castle itself. A Czech immigrant named Bernie Havlik came here to work in the uranium mine. When the mine closed, he joined the town gardening crew, and one particular rocky outcrop in the park defeated him. It was too big to move and impossible to keep tidy. So when he retired, he covered it, slowly and lovingly, with a miniature of a castle from home, working from nothing but old photographs. He started in the mid seventies and was still at it when he died in 1990. The story goes that a visitor from the old country, someone who had grown up near the real Karlstejn, took one look and said it was spot on. It is a quiet, homesick, generous thing, and it has become the symbol of the town.

The second surprise, and the reason Batchelor is here at all, sits north-west of town at a place called Rum Jungle. You cannot visit it, and that is worth noting up front. The former mine is a contaminated legacy site, closed to the public and in the middle of a long, expensive government rehabilitation. But its story is everywhere in town, and it is a remarkable one. This was uranium country, and not in a small way. Discovered in 1949 and mined through the 1950s and 60s, Rum Jungle was the birth of Australia’s modern uranium industry, run by the government to supply the atomic programs of Britain and the United States at the height of the Cold War. For a while, it was the largest industrial enterprise in the Territory, and Batchelor was built to house its workers, becoming, for a time, the third-largest town in the NT after Darwin and Alice Springs.

The Batchelor Museum, housed in the town’s old nunnery, tells this story better than we can, and it is well worth an hour or more of anyone’s time. The walls are lined with the whole strange saga. The prospector Jack White, the uranium prospector who found the first deposit. The secrecy and the spies, the warning signs reading turn back if you are not authorised, the Cold War paranoia that surrounded a remote hole in the Territory bush. The official opening by Prime Minister Menzies in 1954, hailed as the birth of an atomic-age industry. And then came the reckoning. Rum Jungle became one of Australia’s worst mine pollution sites; the East Finniss River was poisoned for decades, and it took until the 1980s for a major clean-up to begin. It is a complicated, sobering history, the pride and the cost sitting side by side on the museum wall, and it is all the more affecting for being told in a converted nunnery in a town most people drive past.

There is a third layer here too. During the war, Batchelor was a major airfield, and it holds a genuine footnote in history. It was here, in March 1942, that General Douglas MacArthur first set foot on Australian soil after the fall of the Philippines. From Batchelor, Allied aircraft flew bombing missions north against Japanese targets. The airfield is still in use today.

We came for a quick look at a castle and left having walked through the atomic age, the war, and one man’s homesick act of devotion, all in a town most people never stop in. That is the thing about the quiet places…they are almost never as quiet as they look.

Batchelor

Batchelor is a small town about 98 kilometres south of Darwin, just off the Stuart Highway, best known today as the gateway to Litchfield National Park. It grew in the 1950s to house workers from the nearby Rum Jungle uranium mine and was briefly the third largest town in the Territory. Today it is a quiet, green place with a museum, a famous miniature castle, an active airfield with a wartime past, and an Aboriginal training college, the Batchelor Institute. This is the country of the Kungarakan and Warai people. For most visitors, it is the last stop for fuel and supplies before Litchfield.

How to Get There

Batchelor is an easy drive from Darwin, about 98 kilometres south on the Stuart Highway, then a short run west on Batchelor Road. The whole route is sealed and suitable for any vehicle, and the town is well signed as the main entrance to Litchfield National Park. There is fuel, food and accommodation in town. Most people visit on the way to or from Litchfield, and Batchelor makes a sensible base for exploring the park.

When to Visit

The dry season, from May to October, is the time to come, with warm days, clear skies and easy access to Litchfield next door. This is also when the town and the national park are busiest. The wet season brings heat, humidity, and heavy storms, and some parts of Litchfield can close due to flooding, though Batchelor itself stays accessible year-round. The museum and castle are fine any time of year, and early in the day is best for the drive to Litchfield’s waterfalls before the crowds arrive.

Final Thoughts

On the surface, Batchelor is a fuel stop on the way to the falls. Underneath is a fascinating story of uranium, the Cold War, a wartime airfield, and a lonely man building a castle from memory. We drove in expecting to fill the tank and drove out having found one of the more quietly moving small towns of the whole trip. Bernie Havlik never went home to Bohemia. But he brought a little of it here, and it is still standing.

Mary Kathleen: A Uranium Ghost Town

Mary Kathleen was on our list for a quick photo the first time we stopped here. We were making the run between Cloncurry and Mount Isa, watching the Selwyn Range roll past, when we turned off to see what was left of a town that no longer exists. We ended up staying the night, camped on the concrete slab of somebody’s long-gone lounge room, and it turned into one of the coolest stops of the whole trip.

There is not much left of Mary Kathleen now. A grid of empty streets. Cracked footpaths going nowhere. Concrete slabs where the houses stood, a roundabout with no traffic, the outline of a swimming pool. But that is exactly what makes it so cool. You are camped in the middle of a town that once housed more than a thousand people and now has nothing but fellow campers, the wind, and a few cattle wandering through the old suburbs like they own the place. Which, in fairness, they now do.

The story of how it got here and how it vanished is worth knowing before you visit, because it changes how the place feels.

Uranium was found in this area in 1954 by two prospectors, Clem Walton and Norm McConachy. The deposit and the town that followed took their name from McConachy’s late wife, Mary Kathleen. Rio Tinto formed a company to work the area, and between 1956 and 1958, an entire town was built from scratch, architect-designed, laid out to sit gently in its shallow valley, with reticulated water piped in from a dam on the Corella River. This was no rough mining camp. Mary Kathleen had a school, a hospital, a cinema, banks, sports ovals, a community store, and more than two hundred homes. People who grew up there remember it fondly, dressing in their Sunday best for community functions, and fresh milk from the store as a treat.

The mine operated by the open-cut method, digging uranium ore from the ground and processing it on-site into yellowcake. The first phase supplied the United Kingdom’s atomic program. But by 1963, that contract had been filled ahead of schedule, and just like that, the town went quiet. Most people left. Only a handful of families stayed on as caretakers while the gardens withered and the lawns turned to weeds.

Then, in 1974, it woke up again. New contracts with power utilities in Japan, Germany and the United States brought the mine back to life, and the population climbed to a peak of around twelve hundred by 1981. Mary Kathleen even fielded an Australian Rules side that won three flags in a row in the Mount Isa league. But the second life was short. The ore ran out, and in 1982 the mine closed for good.

What happened next is the part that gives the place its strange, swept-clean feeling. In 1983, the entire town was sold at auction, one of the largest sales of a complete town in Australian history. Houses, machinery, public buildings, streetlights, the lot. Buyers pulled the structures apart and carted them off, much of it to Cloncurry. By the end of 1984, there was nothing left but slabs and roads. The site was then rehabilitated, Australia's first major uranium mine rehabilitation, and the land handed back to grazing.

So when you camp here, you are not camping in a town that fell down. You are camping in a town that was deliberately taken away, piece by piece, and the emptiness has an oddly peaceful quality because of it. Despite its eerie history, the campsite felt peaceful and had a great vibe. There’s something special about staying where nature is reclaiming the land, and we felt an unexpected sense of calm.

‍The highlight of our visit was exploring the old mine site. The drive out to the open-cut pit was a short adventure in itself, with rocky tracks winding through the rugged terrain. When we reached the top, the view took our breath away. The water filling the mine pit glows an otherworldly turquoise, creating a stunning contrast against the rusty red cliffs. It’s surreal to think this was once a hub of industry, mining uranium for global use.

Walking around the area, we found rusted equipment, concrete slabs, and signs of the mine’s past life. It’s a stark reminder of how industries can boom and fade, leaving behind both scars and beauty.

Despite the town’s abandonment, the site feels alive with a different kind of energy. One shaped by the land and those who pass through. We’re glad we stopped and stayed. Mary Kathleen has quickly become one of our favourite campsites in the country. Quiet, peaceful and interesting.

Mary Kathleen Township Site

The old township sits in a shallow valley in the Selwyn Range, about halfway between Mount Isa and Cloncurry. All that remains is the street grid, concrete house slabs, footpaths, a roundabout and the shell of the old pool. The land is private property, and the owner allows self-contained travellers to camp overnight among the ruins. It is a large, open site with room to spread out, and choosing which vacant slab to park on is part of the fun. There are no facilities of any kind, so you need to be fully self-contained. The mine pit itself is a separate trip, about seven kilometres away up a rough track.

How to Get There

Mary Kathleen sits right off the Barkly Highway between Mount Isa and Cloncurry, roughly an hour from either. Coming from Cloncurry, it is around 50 kilometres west, with the turn-off on your right. The access road into the township is potholed and rough but manageable in a 2WD if you take it slowly. Big rigs are fine at the main camp area.

The drive up to the mine pit is a different matter. The track climbs about seven kilometres from the camp and is badly potholed, corrugated and single-lane in places. Leave the caravan or motorhome in the township and take a smaller vehicle, or, as many do, walk or cycle up. It is slow going either way, but the view at the top makes it worthwhile.

Winton to Mary Kathleen is roughly 350km, about a 4-hour drive, via Kynuna and Cloncurry (the Landsborough and Flinders Highways).

Chose a house slab in the old suburbs and camped the night among the ruins.
Walked the empty streets, following footpaths and picking out where the pool, the ovals and the shops once stood.
Drove up the rough track to the open-cut mine pit for the view.
Caught up with other travellers who had come for the same mix of history and quiet.

The Turquoise Pit and a Serious Warning‍ ‍

The highlight for most people, us included, is the old open-cut pit. The track up is a short adventure in its own right, rocky and rough, winding through the ranges. And then you reach the top, and the view stops you. The pit has filled with water that glows an unreal, luminous turquoise, ringed by rusty red and orange cliffs. It looks like something from another planet, and it is genuinely one of the most striking things we have seen in outback Queensland.

It is also radioactive, and this is not a joke or a bit of local colour. The water in the pit carries dissolved minerals and radioactivity from the old workings. Do not swim in it. Do not touch it. Do not let the dog near it. Admire it from the edge, take your photographs, and keep your distance. The colour is beautiful precisely because of what is in the water.

‍When to Visit

The dry season, roughly May to September, is the time to visit. The days are warm rather than brutal, the access roads are firm, and the nights are cool and clear, which makes for excellent stargazing out here with no town lights for company. Summer is punishingly hot, and the tracks can be cut by rain. Whenever you come, arrive with full water, full fuel and enough supplies, because there is nothing at the site and the nearest towns are an hour off in either direction.

Final Thoughts‍ ‍

We came to Mary Kathleen for a look and a photo, and stayed the night because the place got under our skin. There is something about sleeping in the footprint of a vanished town that makes you think. All those lives, the milk cans and the Sunday best and the three football flags, and now just slabs and cattle and a huge quiet sky. It is not sad, exactly. More a reminder of how quickly a place can rise and fall, and how gently the country takes it all back. We are very glad we turned off the highway.

The Runways You Drive Past

Most people do a hundred and thirty past them without a second glance. We have done it ourselves, more than once. (Well, 100 in the moho!) You are watching the road, the fuel gauge, the shimmer up ahead, and a flat strip of old bitumen slides by in the scrub with a faded sign and maybe a cut-out aeroplane standing where a real one used to. Then it is gone, and you are thinking about the next fuel stop.

But once you know what they are, you cannot unsee them. Strung along the Stuart Highway up to Darwin is a chain of WWII airstrips, the front line of the air war over northern Australia, and most of them sit close enough to touch as you drive north.

We had passed them a few times before we finally started stopping. This is the story of the two we explored, and the ones we still pass by, adding to our ‘must stop one day’ list.

Why are they here?

After the Japanese bombed Darwin on the nineteenth of February 1942, the thinking was simple and urgent. Keep the aircraft in one place, and one raid could destroy the lot. So the RAAF spread them out. Under the Aerodrome Development Program, strips were carved into the bush all the way down the highway, far enough apart that no single attack could take them all.

They did not mess about. Between 1942 and 1944, more than forty airstrips were built along the North-South road, most of them in the Top End. At first, they were named plainly by their distance in miles from the Port of Darwin. The 27-Mile. The 34-Mile. Later, one by one, the numbers were traded for names, and almost every name belonged to a pilot who had been killed. Drive the highway today, and you are reading a roll call of the dead, dressed up as roadside stops.

Two of them we have properly stopped at. The rest we have watched slide past, meaning to pull over one day, the way you do.

Strauss, the 27-Mile

Strauss is the most intact of the roadside fighter strips, and it sits right beside the highway, a short run south of Noonamah, with cut-out planes on the old runway and interpretive boards that are genuinely worth a read.

It was built in a hurry, between March and April of 1942, by the United States Army’s 808th Engineer Aviation Battalion. A single runway, five thousand feet long, with taxiways and dispersal bays scratched out of the bush beside it. It flew American P-40 Kittyhawks first, then RAAF and RAF Spitfires later in the war. Locals also knew it as the 27-Mile, or the Humpty Doo Strip.

The name it carries is Captain Allison Strauss, an American Kittyhawk pilot of the 8th Pursuit Squadron. He was killed over Darwin Harbour during a raid on the twenty-seventh of April 1942. He was twenty-something, a long way from home, and the strip has worn his name ever since. Standing on that quiet bit of bitumen with the road noise behind you, it is hard not to feel the weight of that.

Wander off the strip, and you find the war has not entirely been cleared away. Rows of rusting fuel drums still sit in the scrub, slumped and holed and sloww the colour of the dirt around them, with an interpretive sign nearby explaining the endless guard duty that came with a place like this. It is a small thing, a heap of old drums, but it does more to conjure the war than the cut-out planes do. Someone stacked those, once, and stood watch over them.

Gorrie Airstrip

Gorrie is the other one we made the effort for, and it astonishes in a different way. Ten kilometres north of Larrimah, a dirt track runs west off the highway for about a kilometre and then opens out, without much warning, onto a runway. You are suddenly standing on the largest aircraft repair base the Territory had in the war, and by some accounts, the biggest air force base in the country.

At its peak in late 1943, Gorrie held more than six thousand people. It was less an airstrip than a town. There was an open-air picture theatre that seated two thousand, a boxing ring, four tennis courts, and grounds for football and cricket. All of it out here, in a country that today has a pub, a few buildings and a famous pink panther at Larrimah, and not much else. It is named for Flying Officer Peter Gorrie of No. 2 Squadron RAAF, from Peterborough in South Australia, whose Hudson bomber was shot down over the Netherlands East Indies in January 1942. None of the crew was found.

Walk the old runway now, and it is just cracked bitumen, parked-up campers, concrete slabs where the great igloo hangars stood, and a lot of sky. But stand still for a minute and try to picture six thousand people, a picture theatre and a boxing ring.

The ones we haven’t visited yet

Between Gorrie in the south and Strauss in the north, the highway passes a string of others we have driven by but not yet visited. We will get to them.

Hughes was a Hudson bomber base established in May 1942 that survived three air raids without losing a single life. Livingstone, the old 34-Mile, was the first strip finished in early 1942 and took its name from an American pilot, Lieutenant John Livingstone, who crash-landed after a fight over Darwin. Further south, McDonald was built by American engineers who first called it Burkholder, before it was renamed for a Wing Commander killed in 1941. And Fenton, out to the west, was the big offensive base, a piece of America dropped into the outback, launching long-range bombers against Japanese targets through 1943 and 1944.

Each one is a slightly different story. Some are little more than a widening in the scrub now. Others, like Strauss and Gorrie, have been looked after. All of them were loud, crowded places once, and all of them are very quiet and peaceful now.

Final thoughts

The thing we carry away is not the runways themselves. It is a reminder about the war cemetery at Adelaide River, up the same highway, where a lot of these names are not on signs but on headstones.

It is easy to treat the roadside strips as a nice leg-stretch, a cut-out plane, a photo, and back in the moho. And they are a good stop, genuinely. But they are also the reason a whole generation of young men, Australian, American, British, came to this hot, remote country, and the reason some of them never left it. The strips are named for the ones who did not make it home. Worth pulling over for. Worth reading the boards. Worth a quiet minute before you get back on the road.

The Stuart Highway Airstrips

The airstrips run the length of the Stuart Highway through the Top End, with more as you get closer to Darwin. They were the dispersal fields of the air war, built to scatter aircraft away from Darwin after the 1942 bombing. Some are now heritage-listed and interpreted with boards and model planes. Others are little more than a widening in the scrub, slowly going back to bush. The two best to visit are Strauss, the most intact of the roadside fighter strips, and Gorrie, once the largest airbase in the country.

How to Get There

The strips sit along the Stuart Highway between Three Ways, at the Barkly junction, and Darwin. You do not need to plan a special trip. If you are driving north to Darwin, you are already passing them. Strauss is the easiest to visit. It sits right beside the highway, a short run south of Noonamah, roughly 45 kilometres south of Darwin, with a car park, interpretive boards, and cut-out planes visible from the road. You cannot really miss it once you are looking. Gorrie takes a little more effort, which is part of its appeal. It is about 10 kilometres north of Larrimah. A signed dirt track runs west off the highway for around a kilometre before opening out onto the runway. The track is fine in the dry but should be left alone after rain, and it is worth checking conditions before you take anything large down it.

When to Visit

The dry season, roughly May to October, is the time to visit. The weather is stable, the strips are easy to walk on, and the Gorrie track is firm. The wet season brings heat, storms and the risk of a boggy track, and the dirt run into Gorrie in particular is best avoided after rain. Early morning or late afternoon is best for walking the open runways, as they retain heat.

Final Thoughts

The thing we carry away is not the runways themselves. It is the cemetery at Adelaide River, up the same highway, where a lot of these names are not on signs but on headstones. The strips are named after those who did not make it home. Worth pulling over for. Worth reading the boards. Worth a quiet minute before you get back on the road.

To the north, the highway runs down to Darwin and out to the coast at Dundee Beach. To the south, it continues toward Three Ways, then either south to Adelaide or west to Queensland. Bynoe: Airboat Adventures

Our airboat trip with Northern Territory Airboats, out near Bynoe, turned into one of the more memorable mornings we had in the Top End. It’s fast, loud and surprisingly calm in between. The boat skimmed across the surface as soon as the fan kicked in, gliding over shallow water and twisting channels that would stop a normal vessel immediately.

Once we settled into the rhythm, the crocs appeared first. A few saltwater crocodiles were sunning themselves along the banks, keeping their distance but making their presence known. Seeing them out here feels different to spotting them near towns; quieter, a bit more ancient, and clearly at home.

Birdlife was the real standout. Our guide, Josh, pointed out species we would’ve missed on our own, adding enough context to make the wetlands feel alive rather than just scenic. The airboat itself helped; it moves quickly but doesn’t churn up the shallows, letting us slip close without disturbing much.

Most of the time, the only sounds were the fan winding down, the calls of birds across the floodplain and the water settling behind us. It was an easy way to experience the wetlands without needing a big day trip or a long drive into the national parks.

We drove out to Fogg Dam expecting a quiet look at a bit of water and a few ducks. We came away having seen more birds than we could name, two saltwater crocodiles, a sleepy freshwater croc, and a pair of tourists we are fairly sure we saved from becoming breakfast. Not a bad haul for a morning.

Fogg Dam sits on the Adelaide River floodplain, out past Humpty Doo on the road toward Kakadu. It was built in the 1950s to water a grand rice-growing scheme that never quite worked, and when the rice failed, the wetland quietly took over. What was meant to be a paddock is now one of the best birdwatching spots in the Top End, with a couple of hundred species recorded and one of the highest predator-to-prey ratios of anywhere on earth, thanks to a famous population of water pythons and the dusky rats they live on. Nature, it turns out, made much better use of the place than we did.

We headed out early, which is the only sensible way to do it. The birds are busiest in the cool of the morning, the light is soft, and the tour buses have not arrived yet. Zoe stayed home for this one, having a lie-in back at the moho with the air con going, which was the right call. Dogs are not permitted in the reserve, and in any case, a wetland full of crocodiles is no place for a curious staffy!

The birdlife was the first thing to stop us. Egrets and herons stalking the shallows, jacanas trotting across the lily pads on those ridiculous long toes, ibis, cormorants, and, somewhere out over the floodplain, hidden from us, a jabiru, Australia’s only stork. Cameron’s new copy of Birds of Australia earned its place in the day, coming out every few minutes as we tried to put names to what we were seeing. There is a particular satisfaction in flipping to the right page and going, there, that one, that is what that is.

And then the crocodiles, which is where Fogg Dam stops being a gentle birdwatch and reminds you where you are. We spotted a freshwater croc first, small and sleepy, chilling just under the water, the sort you can look at with mild affection. The two salties were another matter. You do not look at a saltwater crocodile with affection. You look at it with respect and a firm intention to stay in the vehicle. The dam wall here is officially closed to walking for exactly this reason, and the signs are not subtle about it.

Which brings us to the tourists. Partway along, we came upon a couple who had decided the closed dam wall looked like a nice spot for a stroll, out on foot, right beside the water, precisely where the salties live. We pulled up and had a quiet word, pointed out the closure signs and the very good reason for them, and turned them gently back toward their car. They had no idea. We would rather be the ones who told them than read about it later. Consider it a public service, delivered before nine in the morning.

We had timed our run well right up until the moment three tour buses arrived at once, and the quiet morning became a car park. That is the risk out here, and the argument for getting in early. We had already had the best of it, so we were happy enough to hand the place over and move on.

There was one more thing that caught our Neil’s attention on the way. Out along the Arnhem Highway near Humpty Doo stands a great circular array of radio masts, the Humpty Doo transmitting station. Neil, who cannot drive past an antenna farm without wanting to know what it does, had questions, so we looked it up. It turns out to be a Navy site, built in 1982 after Cyclone Tracy wrecked the old transmitting station closer to Darwin. It is still going, still owned by Defence, and it is the transmitting half of a high-frequency communications system that reaches out across the north. All those masts, humming away in the scrub, sending signals over the horizon while the egrets fish in the shallows next door. The Top End is full of these odd overlaps if you keep your eyes open.

Fogg Dam Conservation Reserve

Fogg Dam is a wetland reserve on the Adelaide River floodplain, about 70 kilometres east of Darwin and a short run past Humpty Doo. Built as part of a failed 1950s rice project, it is now one of the most accessible wetlands in the Top End and a renowned birdwatching site, open all year. The reserve sits on the traditional lands of the Limilngan-Wulna people, who are active in its management. A causeway runs across the dam with viewing platforms and bird hides, and there are walking trails through the surrounding monsoon forest and floodplain. The dam wall itself is closed to walking because of crocodiles.

How to Get There

Fogg Dam is an easy day trip from Darwin, roughly 70 kilometres and under an hour by sealed road. Head east out of Darwin on the Arnhem Highway, through Humpty Doo, then turn off onto Fogg Dam Road and follow the signs. The roads are sealed and suitable for all vehicles, and the reserve is open year-round with all-weather access. There is no public transport, though several Darwin-based tour operators include Fogg Dam on wetland and wildlife day trips. An NT Parks Pass is required.

What to See and Do

Arrived early to catch the birds at their most active and beat the tour buses.
Watched egrets, herons, jacanas and ibis working the shallows and lily pads.
Spotted a freshwater croc and two saltwater crocodiles from the safety of the vehicle.

A Note on the Crocodiles

Fogg Dam is home to both freshwater and saltwater crocodiles, and the saltwater ones are the reason the dam wall is closed to walking. This is not a technicality or an overcautious sign. Salties move silently, travel long distances underwater, and can remain submerged and unseen for extended periods.

The water looks calm, and the lily pads look lovely, and that is exactly the trap.

Stay in your vehicle where the signs tell you to;

Do not walk the closed dam wall;
Keep well back from the water's edge on the viewing platforms;
Do not let children wander toward the water. Be crocwise!
The birds are worth the trip. Becoming a cautionary tale is not.

When to Visit

The birds are at their best from around the end of December through to July, when the water lilies are in bloom and the wetland is full. The dry season, from May to October, gives you easy access and stable weather. Whenever you come, early morning is the golden window: the birds are active, the light is beautiful, the heat is bearable, and you will have the place largely to yourself before the tour buses roll in around mid-morning. Bring binoculars, a bird field guide, insect repellent and dull-coloured clothing, and go slowly and quietly so as not to startle the birds.

Final Thoughts

We turned up at Fogg Dam expecting very little and left thoroughly won over. There is something about a place that was meant to be one thing, a rice farm, and quietly became something far better, a wetland alive with birds and crocs and the low hum of insects. We drove out feeling rather pleased with ourselves, both for the bird spotting (who knew we liked birds!) and for the two people who will never know how close they came to a very bad morning.

Cape Crawford:Finding the Lost City

The ‘curse’ lifted the moment we left the ground. Which is to say, we broke it by cheating and flew.

There are a few ways to reach the Lost Cities around Cape Crawford. Some you can drive to, if you have the vehicle and the nerve for the roads. Our moho was not the vehicle and after our previous journey our nerves weren’t up for it either.

The Lost City we came for sits on private land, on McArthur River Station, and the only way in is by helicopter. So the morning after we limped into Heartbreak Hotel, dusty and cursed and still faintly itchy, we handed ourselves over to Lost City Helicopters and a bright yellow chopper with no doors.

No doors. Worth repeating, because Cameron would like it on record that he is not a fan of the whirly birds at the best of times, let alone strapped into one that has decided doors are optional. We buckled in, held on tight, and lifted off over the scrub with the wind coming straight through the cabin. Thirty minutes of flying, and somewhere in the first five minutes, the nerves gave way to something better.

Because from the air, the name finally makes sense. Sandstone towers rise straight out of the savannah in their hundreds, pillars and spires and blunt-topped blocks standing in rows and clusters like the ruins of a city nobody remembers building. Streets, almost. Laneways between the towers. You understand, looking down, why the European explorers who came through here reached for the word city.

We put down in a clearing among the towers, and then it was just us. Us, the pilot, the yellow chopper, and an hour and a half on foot through the formations with not another human in sight. No boardwalks, no railings, no signs telling us where to look. Just the guide, the two of us, and the strange stone rising overhead. It felt, as much as anything ever has, like walking into a place for the first time.

Our guide knew the country well, and not just the rocks. Every few minutes, there was something to stop for. A plant that flowers only after fire, a bird call placed before we could find the bird, the small signs of how much life holds on out here. We came for the towers and left knowing a little of what lives among them.

It is worth saying plainly that this is Gudanji, Yanyuwa, Garrwa and Mara Country, and has been for many thousands of years. We were visitors here for a morning. The people of these nations have held a connection to this land and these waters across a span of time that makes the word ancient feel small, and that connection carries on today. We did not set out to retell stories that are not ours to tell, and we came away thinking the best way to hear from the Traditional Owners is directly from the Traditional Owners themselves. In Borroloola, up the road, Waralungku Arts shows work by Yanyuwa, Garrwa, Mara and Gudanji artists, and it is a good place to start.

We made it back to Heartbreak with a ton of photographs and a day we will be talking about for a long while. Cameron even conceded, on solid ground, that the doorless chopper had been worth it. (Do not tell the pilot)

The next day, we kept our feet on the ground and drove out toward Borroloola and King Ash Bay, an easy day trip north from the hotel and a good way to see the Gulf side of this country. Borroloola sits on the McArthur River, a small town with a big fishing reputation, and King Ash Bay, a little further on, is where much of that fishing actually happens: a cluster of camps and boat ramps run by a club on the riverbank. It is barramundi country, and even for a pair who came for rocks rather than rods, there is something to the quiet pull of all that brown water heading out to the sea.

The thing that stops you on the way, though, is the mine. The McArthur River zinc and lead mine is one of the largest deposits of its kind in the world, and you feel its scale long before you can see much. The open pit runs to more than four hundred metres deep, and a couple of hundred hectares across, and the overburden has been piled into mountains that were not there before. To reach the ore, which lay directly beneath the river, the operation diverted five and a half kilometres of the McArthur River from its course. Take a moment with that...They shifted the river. It is a genuinely staggering sight to drive past, and, we will say plainly, it is also the same river the Traditional Owners have gone to court over, most recently in a ruling that recognised lasting cultural harm from the mine’s expansion. Both things are true at once, the sheer engineering nerve of it and the cost carried by the people whose Country it sits on. We drove past quietly and left it at that.

The Lost City at Cape Crawford

The Lost City we visited sits on private land on McArthur River Station, and the only access is by helicopter from Cape Crawford. It is one of several such formations in the region, all made of the same ancient sandstone, but this one has no road in and no crowds, which is a large part of why it feels the way it does.

How the Lost Cities Were Formed

The short version is a very, very long time. The sandstone here began as sand on the floor of an ancient sea more than a billion years ago, among the oldest rock of its kind anywhere on Earth. Over millions of years, that sand was buried, compacted, and cemented into solid stone, then slowly uplifted into a plateau.

Then the plateau began to break. Cracks opened along lines of weakness in the rock, and water and wind went to work on those cracks, widening them into crevices, then gullies, then narrow gorges. What was left standing between the gaps became the towers. Everything you see rising from the plain is simply the hardest stone, the parts that resisted longest while the rest weathered away around them. The stone itself is almost pure silica sand, held together by a crust of iron and minerals, which is what gives the towers their deep rust colour in the right light. And because it began as seabed, there are no fossils in it. It is older than the creatures that would have left them.

Other Lost Cities You Can Drive To

The Lost City we visited was the ‘helicopter one‘, but it is not the only Lost City out here. Limmen National Park, north and east of Cape Crawford, holds both the Southern Lost City and the Western Lost City, and both can be reached by road rather than air. Access is via the Nathan River Road and the side tracks off it, all unsealed, somewhat rough, and best tackled in a well-prepared four-wheel drive. The Southern Lost City has a camping ground close to the formations and a loop walk that runs right along the base, which would be a fine way to see them at dawn. There are no services in the park to speak of, so anyone heading in needs to be fully self-sufficient with fuel, water and supplies. It is not a drive to take lightly, but for those set up for it, you can walk among the towers without leaving the ground.

When to Visit

The dry season, roughly May to September, is the window to travel. but always check the NT Roads App or NT Parks website. The roads into Limmen close with the wet, and helicopter flights depend on the weather too. The cooler dry-season months make the walking bearable, and the light on the stone is at its best early and late in the day, when the low sun casts the towers in glowing light.

Final Thoughts

We had chased these towers a long way, up a ‘highway’ that did its best to stop us, and for a while it felt like the country did not want us to arrive. Then we flew in over the top of it all and understood what the fuss was about. Standing among stone older than almost anything else on the planet, with no one else for miles, is a quiet sort of feeling. Small, in the way the outback is good at making you feel small. Curse well and truly broken!

Uneven ground: The walking is unmarked and rocky. Watch your footing around the bases of the formations.

The Limmen roads: If you drive to the other Lost Cities instead, the unsealed tracks are remote and unforgiving. Full fuel, full water, and tell someone your plan.
