A Slow Day in Warrnambool

Not every day on the road is about covering ground. We’d parked up in Warrnambool for a while and had no real agenda beyond seeing a few things at a pace that suited all of us, Zoe included.

The morning started at the Warrnambool Botanic Gardens, and we weren’t expecting big things. Boy, were we wrong!. Morning fog was still sitting low over the lawns when we arrived, the light soft and a bit otherworldly, and the gardens just opened up before us. Wide curving paths, enormous old trees, a lily pond with a stone bridge, and a fernery tucked into one corner. The whole place was designed by William Guilfoyle in 1877, the same man behind the Melbourne Royal Botanic Gardens, and you can feel that considered hand in the layout. Sweeping and unhurried.

We spent longer than expected just wandering. There’s a Lone Pine near the centre of the gardens, planted in 1934 from a seed brought back from Gallipoli. One of only a handful still standing in Victoria. It’s easy to walk past without noticing it, but once you do, it is worth a moment’s contemplation.

From there, we drove out to Hopkins Falls, about 13 kilometres north-east of town. The Hopkins River had been running strong, and the falls were putting on a proper show. At around 90 metres wide, they’re among the widest in Australia, and when the river is up, they fill the whole rock face. There was a fine mist rising off the base, and the sound was constant and low. We walked down to the lower viewing platform for a closer look. It’s not a long walk, but it gets you right into it.

Worth knowing: the falls are best in winter or after decent rainfall. In a dry summer, they can drop to a trickle. We timed it well.

The afternoon brought a slower gear again. Fletcher Jones Market sits in the old Fletcher Jones clothing factory on the highway into town, fronted by a heritage-listed garden with an oversized silver ball you can spot from a distance. Zoe was coming in with us, leash on, nose going the whole time. The market is dog-friendly throughout, gardens and all, which meant she got to do her own version of browsing.

Inside, it’s two floors of stalls, somewhere around 50 of them, covering antiques and collectables, old books, vinyl records, retro clothing, artwork, coins, furniture and the kind of oddly specific memorabilia that takes a while to identify. We didn’t need anything in particular, which is probably the right way to go in. Zoe paused at a few stalls with great seriousness. We moved on without spending too much.

It was a good day. Quiet, genuinely interesting, and over before the legs gave out.

Warrnambool Botanic Gardens

The Warrnambool Botanic Gardens cover 20 acres just north of the town centre, designed by William Guilfoyle in 1877. Features include wide curving paths, a lily pond with a stone bridge, a fernery, a band rotunda, and a Lone Pine grown from a seed brought back from Gallipoli. One of Victoria’s earliest provincial botanic gardens, open from sunrise to sunset daily.

Hopkins Falls

Hopkins Falls sit on the Hopkins River about 13 kilometres north-east of Warrnambool, near Allansford. Two elevated viewing platforms sit close to the action, with a path leading down to the base for a closer look. Best visited in winter or after significant rainfall.

Fletcher Jones Market

The Fletcher Jones Market occupies the former Fletcher Jones clothing factory on the Princes Highway, fronted by a heritage-listed garden. Dogs are welcome on leash throughout the market and gardens. Open daily 10am to 5pm.

How to Get There

Warrnambool is approximately 260 kilometres south-west of Melbourne via the Princes Highway, or around 3 hours by road. The Botanic Gardens are a short walk from the town centre. Hopkins Falls is a 15-minute drive north-east via Wangoom Road. Fletcher Jones Market is on the Princes Highway on the eastern approach to town, hard to miss.

When to Visit

Warrnambool is a year-round destination. The Botanic Gardens are lovely in any season, but the mist and soft morning light of the cooler months, or an odd cold front in summer, adds something. Hopkins Falls are at their best in winter or after heavy rain. The Fletcher Jones Market runs daily and is a good wet-weather option.

Final Thoughts

Warrnambool is surprising, having visited many times, we always manage to find something new. The gardens alone were worth the stop. The falls were a bonus. And Zoe sniffed her way through two floors of antiques and collectables without missing a thing. Not bad for a lazy day.

Melbourne’s best days are the wandering ones.

Not the rushed checklist version. Not the “quick, tick Federation Square and move on” version. The version where you lace up, pick a direction, and let the city layer itself gradually. These are the places we return to every time.

Our Faves!

The State Library Reading Room

The State Library Victoria is our reset button.

Climb the stairs, step into the Reading Room, and look up. The dome pulls your eye skyward and everything else quiets down. It doesn’t matter if you’re reading or just passing through. The space demands stillness.

Cameron could happily lose an hour here. Neil tolerates it politely.

Wandering the Yarra and Southbank

Start at Flinders Street and drift down toward Southbank. The river has a way of smoothing Melbourne’s sharper edges.

Cyclists, buskers, office workers, tourists. It’s busy but not frantic. Early light on the water is best. Late afternoon works too. It’s an easy, flat wander that feels open compared to the grid above.

The NGV

The National Gallery of Victoria is a dependable anchor.

The water wall at the entrance still feels theatrical. Inside, it’s cool, calm, and generous with space. Even if you don’t linger in every gallery, it’s worth stepping in to shift gears from street pace to art pace.

Laneways, Arcades and That Dymocks Stop

One of our favourite walks runs from Flinders Street up through the back laneways toward the top end of the city.

Street art, tiny bars, narrow passages that open unexpectedly into light. It’s Melbourne at its most textured.

We always detour into Royal Arcade and the Block Arcade, both polished and slightly theatrical in their own way.

And yes, a stop at Dymocks Collins Street is non-negotiable. There’s something about picking up a slightly trashy romance from the underground shelves that feels like a city ritual.

Gardens and a Tram to the Sea

If we’ve got the time, we head to the gardens.

The Fitzroy Gardens are our favourite. Less sprawling than the Botanic Gardens, but intimate and beautifully kept. Easy loops. Quiet corners. That said, the Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria are worth the scale if you want a longer wander.

And if the city starts to close in, we jump on a tram to St Kilda. The ride itself feels like part of the experience. Sea air resets everything.

Bonus: When the Timing’s Right

If schedules align, Cameron will always push for a concert with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. Neil comes along… occasionally. It’s one of those evenings that reminds us Melbourne can do grandeur without trying too hard.

Final Thoughts

Melbourne works best when you let it unfold in loops. River. Library. Gallery. Laneway. Garden. Repeat. We no longer try to conquer it. We just return to the bits we know we love.

A Reflection from the Road

Have you noticed this?

The first time you drive into a new town, it feels like it takes forever. You’re scanning everything. Street signs. Shopfronts. That slightly confusing intersection you don’t want to miss.

Then you return months later and suddenly it feels… smaller. Shorter. Like someone trimmed the edges. We’ve felt this a lot on the road.

The first time we rolled into Charleville, we were alert. Finding the caravan park. Working out the best place to walk Zoe. Figuring out where the bakery was. It felt expansive.

The next visit? We knew exactly where to turn. We knew which streets had shade in the afternoon. We understood the rhythm of the place. It felt slightly quicker, even though nothing had physically changed.

Same with Carnarvon Gorge. The first walk-in, we were watching the distances and checking the map. The second time, we noticed the texture of the rock walls and how the air cooled as we moved deeper into the gorge. The track didn’t shrink. Our attention shifted.

There’s a reason for it.

When something is new, your brain works harder. It records more detail. More detail makes an experience feel longer in hindsight. When something is familiar, fewer new details are stored. Our memory compresses everything

But here’s what we’ve learned from slow travel. Familiar doesn’t mean less interesting. It just means less frantic. On a first visit, we’re trying to orient ourselves. On a second visit, we’re free to observe.

We’re not hunting for the highlights anymore. We’re noticing the ordinary things. The way the river looks in different light, or the café owner who remembers us, or the familiar dog park that Zoe loves.

Sometimes the return is actually richer.

When we stay longer in one place, or deliberately go back, the pressure drops. We don’t need to “do it all.” We don’t need to rush from lookout to lookout. We can walk the same stretch twice and see something different each time.

That’s where slow travel shifts things. It gives us permission to re-see, rather than constantly chasing the new. Familiar feels shorter because we’re no longer bracing for the unknown. We’re comfortable, our bodies relax faster, and our brains don’t work as hard.

But that comfort can open up depth. We notice details instead of directions and we experience nuance instead of novelty.

We used to think repeat visits meant less adventure. Now we think they mean more understanding. The first visit stretches time, while the second visit stretches connection.

And when we return, familiar stops feeling shorter altogether. It starts feeling like part of our story.

Ararat: Visiting J Ward

After walking through Aradale, we weren’t sure how we’d feel stepping into J Ward. If Aradale felt expansive and institutional, J Ward feels contained. Tight. Intentional.

Built in 1859 as part of Ararat Gaol during the Victorian gold rush, J Ward originally housed goldfields offenders. Thick bluestone walls, narrow cells, iron doors that still clang when they close. It’s solid in a 19th-century prison architecture kind of way. But its later use is what gives it weight.

From 1887, J Ward became the “Criminally Insane Division” of the Victorian prison system. Men considered both mentally ill and criminal were transferred here from other institutions, including Aradale. It remained in operation in that capacity until 1991, making it one of the last facilities of its kind in Australia.

We joined a guided tour, which is the only way to access most of the site. The guide didn’t sensationalise the stories. Instead, they laid out the evolution of law, medicine, and incarceration in a way that felt factual and sobering.

Some of the men held here had committed serious crimes. Others were caught in a system that blurred the line between punishment and treatment. The cells are small. The exercise yards are stark. It’s confronting to stand inside a space that once held someone indefinitely, with little clarity about their future.

There’s a preserved gallows on site, used during its time as a functioning gaol before its conversion. It’s presented carefully, but it’s impossible to ignore the reality of what occurred here.

J Ward eventually closed in 1991, and today it operates as a museum offering historical tours. Like Aradale, it has been used as a filming location for various productions, drawn by its heavy atmosphere and intact architecture. Walking back into Ararat’s main street afterwards feels slightly surreal. Cafés. Cars. Everyday life. The contrast is sharp.

Places like J Ward don’t offer easy narratives. They sit in that uncomfortable space between justice and mental health, between reform and punishment. And maybe that’s why they’re worth visiting.

Ararat: Inside Aradale

We weren’t sure what to expect walking through the gates of Aradale. The buildings sit high above Ararat, sprawling across the hill with solid bluestone confidence. It looks imposing from a distance. Up close, it feels heavier.

Aradale opened in 1867 as the Ararat Lunatic Asylum and grew to become one of Australia’s largest psychiatric institutions. At its peak, it housed more than 1,000 patients. The scale alone is confronting.

We joined a guided history tour, not a ghost tour. That distinction mattered to us.

Inside, long corridors stretch further than expected. Wards branch off in repeating patterns, with Thick walls, high ceilings, and cast-iron fittings. It’s easy to focus on the architecture, but the real weight of this place comes from the stories.

In the 19th and early 20th centuries, mental health care was deeply flawed. Institutions like Aradale were designed around containment as much as treatment. Patients were admitted for reasons that today would seem shocking: postnatal depression, epilepsy, intellectual disability, trauma, and even poverty. Some stayed for months. Some for decades.

It’s uncomfortable to sit with. But walking through the site now, it’s clear that history is being presented with more context than spectacle. The guides spoke about evolving medical understanding, changing ethics, and the long, complicated path toward more humane treatment.

Aradale eventually closed in 1993. Surprisingly, not that long ago. Since then, parts of the site have been used for education, tourism, and film. The setting lends itself easily to that genre. But standing there, it feels less like a movie set and more like a reminder.

A reminder of how far we’ve come, and how far we still have to go.

We stayed at Green Hill Lake while exploring Ararat, and walking back into sunlight after the tour, with the open water and hills beyond, felt grounding in a way that’s hard to describe.

Places like Aradale aren’t about fear. They’re about context.

Queenscliff: Dining on The Q Train

We’ve done plenty of dinners out over the years. Few of them move at 40 kilometres an hour through saltmarsh and farmland.

The first time we boarded The Q Train, we weren’t entirely sure what to expect. A degustation menu on a heritage train running between Queenscliff and Drysdale sounded slightly theatrical. It turned out to be one of the most quietly impressive food experiences we’ve had in regional Victoria.

The train itself is part of the Bellarine Railway, and on the various days we travelled, we were lucky enough to be hauled by steam. Proper steam that hisses and breathes, making the whole platform feel cinematic before you’ve even taken your seat.

Once underway, the pace settles. The Bellarine Peninsula rolls past in wide paddocks and low coastal light. Inside, it’s polished timber, linen, attentive service and the slow rhythm of courses arriving as the landscape changes.

The food is the headline act. Local produce, beautifully plated, genuinely restaurant-quality, not “good for a novelty train,” just good, full stop. We’ve done it twice now, and both times the menu felt thoughtful rather than gimmicky.

And for anyone wondering: yes, you can swap the wine pairing for non-alcoholic options. Cameron doesn’t drink, and the alternative pairings were excellent. Not an afterthought, but carefully matched and equally considered. It made the whole experience feel inclusive rather than exclusive.

There’s something slightly surreal about eating a beautifully composed dish while farmland glides past the window. You’re moving, but you’re also unhurried. It’s slow travel in the most literal sense.

Before or after the journey, we usually wander Queenscliff itself with its heritage streets, sea air, and slightly faded coastal elegance, which we always enjoy. At the Drysdale end, the countryside feels entirely different again. Same line, different mood.

It’s not cheap. It’s not rushed. And that’s exactly the point.

What is The Q Train?

The Q Train is a moving restaurant operating along the historic Bellarine Railway between Queenscliff and Drysdale on Victoria’s Bellarine Peninsula.

Guests dine in restored heritage carriages while travelling a 16km return journey through farmland and coastal landscapes. The experience includes multi-course dining with optional beverage pairings.

How to get there

The train departs from Queenscliff Station, about 90 minutes from Melbourne via Geelong. It pairs easily with a Bellarine Peninsula weekend, including Portarlington, Ocean Grove and Point Lonsdale. Bookings are essential.

Final Thoughts

We’ve travelled plenty of kilometres chasing food. This is one of the few times the journey genuinely elevated the meal. It’s indulgent without being flashy. Regional without being rustic. And if you’re doing the Bellarine, it’s a memorable way to spend an afternoon or evening.

Sometimes the best table isn’t stationary.

Melbourne: Neil’s Big Day Out

Sometimes we travel together. Sometimes we don’t.

Recently, Neil took a couple of nights off from the motorhome to revisit his old stomping ground. Neil loves a good city. For Cameron, it’s… less adored. Let’s call it a minor personality clash.

So while Cameron stayed parked up with Zoe, Neil checked into the Crown Metropol Melbourne for a small dose of city luxury. Crisp sheets. Big windows. A fridge that closes without the lock clicking. (Anyone in a van or moho will know this sound!)

It wasn’t about sightseeing at speed. It was about wandering. He walked along the Yarra, past South Wharf and into Southbank, taking the city at ground level. The river has a way of softening Melbourne’s edges. Early light on the water. Office towers reflected back at themselves. Cyclists and runners moving with purpose.

He ducked into one of Cameron’s favourite places, the State Library Victoria, wandering through the rows of peaceful books. Even if you’re just passing through Melbourne, its a great stop.

Food was non-negotiable. Dinner at Man Tong Kitchen delivers exactly what you want from a Melbourne Asian restaurant. Fast, full of flavour, and no fuss. Later, he treated himself at Nobu Melbourne, because sometimes you lean into the city properly. Let’s just say the crab legs were a huge hit!

Finally, he stopped at Haigh's Chocolates to stock up on freckles. Priorities.

Meanwhile, back at the motorhome, things were less glamorous.

Zoe had eaten something she absolutely shouldn’t have. We still don’t know what. The result was a couple of long, anxious days of upset stomach, watchful monitoring, a couple of vet visits and very little sleep. When you travel with a dog, you quickly become a part-time nurse.

A Reflection from the Road

We get asked this a lot.

“How do you visit national parks when you travel with a dog?”

The short answer: We don’t take Zoe into them.

Dogs aren’t allowed in most Australian national parks, and we don’t try to bend that rule. National parks protect wildlife, ecosystems, and cultural sites. As much as we love travelling with Zoe, those protections matter more than convenience.

But that doesn’t mean we skip national parks entirely. It just means we do them differently.

We Split Up

Sometimes one of us visits the park while the other stays back with Zoe. It’s simple, not always ideal, but it works. We compare notes afterwards. Swap stories. Show photos.

It slows the experience down and spreads it out. And honestly, not everything needs to be experienced by us at the same time. Short breaks apart to experience nature are great for moho harmony!

We Stay Longer and Visit in Short Bursts

This is where slow travel helps. If we want to explore a park properly, we’ll stay in the area for several days. Instead of a full-day visit, we’ll do a few hours at a time.

Zoe occasionally stays in the motorhome under strict conditions:

Only in cool weather or when the air-conditioning is reliable
A temperature monitor inside that alerts us if conditions change
A Wi-Fi camera so we can check in remotely
Plenty of fresh water
A nearby traveller is aware that she’s inside

We never leave her all day. A couple of hours, maximum. It takes planning, but it lets us experience places responsibly without rushing.

Some Parks Go on the “Later” List

We don’t need to do everything right now.

Some national parks get added to a list for a future trip, maybe one where Zoe isn’t travelling with us, or where we base ourselves somewhere dog-friendly and visit properly.

Travelling full-time has taught us that not doing something today doesn’t mean we'll never do it.

Local Dog Minding

We prefer to keep Zoe close, but many regional towns have long-term residents who offer dog-minding for a small fee.

It’s worth asking locally. Some caravan park managers know trusted minders. In some areas, even the local vet can point you toward someone reliable, especially if your dog is social and comfortable away from you.

Accepting the Trade-Off

Travelling with a dog changes your pace. You miss some things. You experience others more deeply.

We’ve found incredible state forests, dog-friendly reserves, river walks, and coastal tracks we might have skipped if we weren’t planning around Zoe. National parks are special. But so is travelling with your dog. For us, the trade-off is worth it.

In the end, it’s not about sneaking around rules or finding loopholes. It’s about respecting the spaces we visit and the pet we’re responsible for.

And sometimes, that simply means doing things differently.

We wouldn’t have ended up here without a nudge from a friend. The Victorian Pride Centre wasn’t on our list in the way museums or landmarks usually are, but once it was suggested, it made immediate sense. This is a place built to be visited, walked through, and understood in person. So we booked a guided tour and showed up curious about what we would learn.

The Victorian Pride Centre sits quietly in St Kilda, unmistakably confident in its presence. From the outside, the building is striking without being showy. Once inside, that impression deepens.

The architecture is the first thing you notice. A central, egg-shaped structure rises upward through the building, drawing your eye and your body upward. Around it, individual tenancies line the space like shopfronts, each housing organisations, services, and community groups. The layout feels intentional. Nothing is hidden, but nothing is forced. You move through the Centre the way it was designed to be experienced, gradually, with room to pause.

During the guided tour, the Centre’s purpose became clear. This isn’t just a building. It’s infrastructure. A home for advocacy, health, support services, creative practice, and connection. The guide spoke openly about the need for a space like this, one that acknowledges a difficult past while creating something tangible and forward-facing.

What stood out was how practical it all felt. The Pride Centre isn’t abstract or symbolic in a hollow way. It’s functional. Offices are working spaces. Meeting rooms are in use. People come here for help, for support, for community, and sometimes just to exist without explanation.

Walking through, we were reminded that spaces like this don’t appear by accident. They’re built through persistence, negotiation, and significant collective effort. The Centre honours that without leaning into spectacle. Pride here isn’t loud. It’s solid.

What gave the Centre real weight for us was understanding who actually calls it home. This is not an abstract idea of community. It’s a collection of organisations doing everyday, often unseen work. The Centre houses the Australian Queer Archives, preserving the history that many of us grew up without seeing it officially reflected anywhere. Thorne Harbour Health operates here as well, providing vital health and wellbeing services, alongside Switchboard Victoria, which offers counselling, referrals, and peer support. Add to that JOY 94.9, Australia’s first LGBTIQA+ radio station, and Hares & Hyenas, a cornerstone of queer literature and conversation for decades.

Seeing all of these organisations under one roof made the Centre feel deeply practical and quietly powerful. As a gay couple, it mattered to us to see our community not just acknowledged, but housed, supported, and given permanence. We left feeling grateful that it exists and glad we took the time to understand it properly rather than just passing it by.

Werribee Open Range Zoo surprised us!

Not because we didn’t expect it to be good, but because once we were inside, it genuinely felt like we’d left the city behind. The traffic noise faded quickly, the space opened up, and suddenly Melbourne felt a long way off.

We visited with Cameron’s dad, which sharpened our focus on how the zoo actually works for people with mobility needs, not just how it looks. From the outset, it felt well considered. Clear signage, wide paths, and a free shuttle that runs regularly help visitors move around the larger site, especially to and from the elephant precinct, which is a fair walk at around 1.5 kilometres from the entrance.

The Werribee Open Range Zoo is built around an African safari theme, and it commits to that idea fully. The new elephant enclosure is enormous and impressive, even if it does feel slightly Jurassic Park in scale and design. The elephants clearly have room to move, and the viewing areas are well positioned without feeling intrusive.

One of the highlights was the safari bus tour, which takes you out into the open savannah areas. Seeing giraffes, rhinos, and other animals moving freely across large paddocks adds a sense of scale that traditional zoos can’t offer. It’s relaxed, unhurried, and gives you time to actually watch behaviour rather than just ticking species off a list.

The zoo is extremely popular with families, and that’s noticeable. Children are free to enter, which makes the place lively and, at times, busy. That said, it never felt chaotic. The layout absorbs crowds well, and there are plenty of quieter pockets if you’re happy to walk a little further.

Food options are plentiful and genuinely good, though pricing reflects the reality of running a large attraction. Adult ticket prices are on the higher side too, but it’s clear that cost supports the zoo’s conservation work and long-term sustainability. A Reflection from the Road

Photography doesn’t make us chase more places. It often makes us stay longer in places we’ve already discovered.

Living on the road means you’re surrounded by potential photos all the time. Early on, we tried to capture everything. Sunsets. Streets. Roadside stops. The result was a lot of images that looked fine but didn’t really say much. They were taken quickly, before moving on.

Slowing down changed that.

Taking time to craft a visual story became part of how we travelled.

One of the simplest shifts was staying put long enough for the light to repeat itself. Learning where the sun falls in a town in the morning, then checking the same spot again in the afternoon. You start to notice that the best light often arrives when you’ve stopped looking for it, or when you return the next day to see how it’s changed.

We also stopped walking and shooting at the same time. Pausing for a moment, framing the scene, and tapping to lock exposure made a bigger difference than any edit later. If the sky is bright, we expose for it and let the foreground fall darker. If the shot is about texture or colour, we let the highlights go. Making that choice deliberately slows the whole process.

Staying longer helps with composition too. Familiarity removes pressure. When you’ve walked same street twice, you stop photographing it as a novelty and start noticing smaller things instead. Reflections in windows. Repeating shapes. The way shadows land against a wall at a certain hour. These details are easier to see once a place starts to feel ordinary.

We rely on simple techniques rather than gear. Most of our photos are taken on an iPhone. Keeping the phone level. Stepping back instead of zooming in. Letting negative space do some of the work. If an image doesn’t feel right, we leave it and come back later rather than force it.

Photography became less about collecting images and more about paying attention. Giving ourselves permission to take fewer photos. To miss some moments entirely. To trust that staying longer would offer better ones.

That said, some of our favourite photographs are taken on a whim. Noticing a small detail, capturing it quickly, then returning to it later to see what reveals itself in the image.

In the end, slowing down doesn’t mean photographing less. It means photographing with more intention.

The places didn’t change. Our pace did.

A Reflection from the Road

Slow travel gets talked about a lot, but it’s rarely explained in a way that feels achievable. It’s often framed as something radical. Quit your job. Sell everything. Disappear for a year. Take perfect photos. That version can feel inspiring, but it can also feel strangely hollow.

For us, slow travel didn’t arrive as a grand decision. It crept in. Between staying an extra night because the weather turned good and realising we hadn’t looked at a map all day, we found that we were living a slow life.

At its core, slow travel is about rhythm. Not how far you go, but how long you stay. It’s choosing to remain still long enough for a place to stop performing and start behaving like itself. The first day in a town is often noisy. You’re alert, noticing everything at once. By the third or fourth day, the edges soften. You stop scanning. You start recognising.

Familiarity is part of it as well. Returning to places matters. The second visit tells you more than the first ever could. You notice what’s changed, what hasn’t, and how you fit into it this time around. Being remembered, even briefly, shifts the experience from visitor to participant.

Slow travel also means resisting the urge to optimise everything. Not every day needs to be full. Some of the most meaningful moments happen when nothing much is planned. Sitting by a river longer than intended. Wandering in a cemetery because it feels right. Watching dogs find calm water. These aren’t filler moments. They’re the point.

There’s a practical side that doesn’t get much discussion. Staying put is easier on the body and the budget. Less driving. Less decision fatigue. Fewer days spent packing up just as you’ve settled in. Slow travel isn’t indulgent. It’s sustainable.

It also asks of you in return. You have to sit with boredom long enough for it to pass. You have to be willing to see the same street twice. To walk the same track again. To accept that not every place will reveal itself loudly.

We’ve learned that places don’t open up on demand.

They respond to attention. To patience. To showing up more than once.

Slow travel isn’t about doing less. It’s about doing fewer things more fully. Staying long enough to notice when the wind changes. When the town quietens. When you stop asking what’s next.

Echuca: A Holden Memory

We didn’t come to Echuca for a museum. But once Neil realised the Holden Museum was there, plans shifted quickly. A very specific kind of excitement kicked in. Not loud. Not dramatic, well maybe a little dramatic! Just that quiet pull of something familiar, built into muscle memory rather than nostalgia.

The Holden Museum in Echuca has since closed, but when we visited, it was still very much alive. Rows of cars that once filled suburban driveways, country roads, and work car parks. Nothing precious. Nothing was roped off emotionally. These were cars people owned, drove, dented, fixed, and drove again.

That’s the thing about Holden. It doesn’t sit comfortably as mythology. It belongs to the everyday. To long trips with the windows down. To farm utes, family sedans, and panel vans with a job to do. Walking through the museum felt less like learning history and more like recognising it.

Neil moved slowly from car to car, pointing out details, remembering shapes, colours, and stories attached to them. I watched him light up in a way that only happens when something hits the right nerve. Not because it was rare or valuable, but because it mattered.

For those unfamiliar with the Holden legacy in Australia, it’s hard to overstate how embedded the brand once was in everyday life. Holden wasn’t just a car manufacturer. It was part of the national furniture. Built locally, sold locally, and driven everywhere from city streets to red dirt roads, Holden cars became shorthand for reliability, affordability, and Australian-made pride.

That legacy also fed into one of the country’s longest-running rivalries: Holden versus Ford. It played out at racetracks, in workplaces, and around backyard barbeques. You were usually one or the other, often by inheritance rather than choice. The rivalry was rarely hostile. It was tribal in a familiar, almost affectionate way. Walking through the museum, that history sat quietly beneath the surface. Not shouted. Just understood.

Holden’s closure in 2020 marked the end of local car manufacturing in Australia, but it didn’t erase what came before it. Factories shut, badges disappeared, and showrooms emptied, yet the cars themselves didn’t vanish. They stayed on the road, in sheds, in memories. Places like the Echuca Holden Museum existed because of that gap between an industry's end and its everyday presence lingering. The museum wasn’t about mourning the loss. It was about recognising how deeply woven Holden had been into ordinary Australian life.

Regional car museums exist for this exact reason. They’re often built and maintained by people who don’t want these stories to disappear quietly. Not collectors chasing perfection, but locals preserving the ordinary. The Holden Museum felt like that. A passion project rooted in pride rather than profit.

We’re glad we saw it when we did. Since its closure, that chapter has folded back into Echuca’s broader story. Other regional Holden collections still exist, including the Holden Car Museum in Mildura, carrying on that work elsewhere. But this one belongs to memory now, and that feels fitting somehow.

Warrnambool: Exploring the Mouth of the Hopkins

The mouth of the Hopkins River is a quiet place you return to because it works. Calm water, room to breathe, and just enough going on to keep everyone happy. Dogs included.

Known locally as the Blue Hole, this stretch lies just inside the mouth of the Hopkins River, where it meets the Southern Ocean. The river widens and slows here, creating a sheltered pocket of water that’s become a favourite dog beach. The sand shelves gently, the current is mild, and the dogs know it. There’s a particular joy in watching them charge in without hesitation, tails up, owners relaxed because the conditions feel forgiving.

It’s also a popular fishing spot, especially early or late in the day. People line the banks quietly, rods angled toward the deeper water, sharing space easily with walkers, swimmers, and dogs shaking themselves dry. Nothing feels rushed here. Everyone seems to understand the rhythm.

The wider area rewards a bit of wandering. Walk far enough along the coastline, and the scene shifts from playful to reflective. The whale-watching platforms are located high above the ocean, well-placed and straightforward. In season, it’s one of the better mainland vantage points along this stretch of coast. Even without whales, the views are worth the walk. You can also reach the platforms down Logan Beach Road, just a short drive (or walk) from the Blue Hole car park.

Granny’s Grave sits quietly on the western coastal headland near the mouth of the Hopkins River. Marked by a simple memorial, it’s believed to commemorate an early European settler, Agnes Ruttleton, known locally as “Granny,” who lived in the area in the mid-1800s. Like many stories from this period, the details are sparse and partly shaped by local retelling rather than formal records.

What’s clear is that the site has endured as a point of remembrance rather than spectacle. It’s understated, exposed to wind and weather, and folded into the landscape rather than separated from it. Standing there feels less like visiting a monument and more like pausing at a remembered place, where the coast, the river, and human history quietly intersect.

A short distance away, the Warrnambool Cemetery is well worth a wander. Set high above the river and ocean, it offers expansive views and a surprising sense of calm. We’ve always found cemeteries like this quietly fascinating. The headstones tell small, personal stories, while the setting does the opposite, opening out to sky, water, and distance. It’s peaceful without feeling heavy, and it rewards slow walking and curiosity.

This is a working, lived-in stretch of coastline that locals return to again and again. And after spending time here, it’s easy to see why.

Warrnambool: Dogs and Penguins

We didn’t come to Warrnambool expecting to discuss dogs protecting penguins, but that’s the thing about slow travel. You stop long enough, look a little closer, and suddenly the most interesting stories aren’t the big attractions at all.

Middle Island sits just offshore, close enough to see from the mainland. For years, it was home to a colony of little penguins that returned each night under the cover of darkness. Foxes changed that. Numbers crashed. Extinction was a real possibility. What followed wasn’t fencing, trapping, or removal. It was dogs.

The story might sound familiar. It became the basis for the Australian film Oddball, which brought the Middle Island Maremma Project to a much wider audience. Like most films, it simplifies things, but the heart of the idea is true. Sometimes protection doesn’t need technology or fences. It just requires presence.

The Middle Island Maremma Project introduced livestock guardian dogs to the island, trained to live alongside the penguins and protect them from predators. It sounds unlikely until you understand how Maremmas work. They don’t chase. They don’t herd. They stand their ground. Their presence alone is enough to deter foxes, and it turned out to be enough to give the penguins a chance again.

Standing near the lookout, reading the signage and watching the island from afar, the solution felt quietly clever. Not flashy. Not perfect. Just considered. It’s one of those rare conservation stories that doesn’t feel like a compromise, but a collaboration.

We never saw the dogs or the penguins. And that felt right. Middle Island is closed to the public, and the project works precisely because it’s left alone. The story is told from the mainland, through signs, community knowledge, and the understanding that some places are better protected than experienced firsthand.

Warrnambool itself makes a good base for learning this story. The coastal walkways, lookouts, and interpretive signs do the explaining without spectacle. You leave knowing more than when you arrived, and that’s usually the mark of something done well.

We’ve passed through Warrnambool many times over the years, usually visiting Neil’s family. It’s a town we know in an everyday way rather than a one-off stop. That familiarity made this story land a little differently. It wasn’t something we stumbled across once and moved on from. It’s part of the place, retold quietly, visit after visit, as the coastline and seasons change.

Middle Island, Warrnambool

Middle Island sits just off the Warrnambool coastline in Victoria and is part of the local marine and coastal landscape. It’s known for the innovative conservation project that pairs Maremma guardian dogs with a colony of little penguins, helping protect them from introduced predators.

Warrnambool is around three hours southwest of Melbourne via sealed highways. Middle Island itself is visible from several coastal lookouts around town, but access to the island is restricted.

Traveller’s Notes: What are the domes at the Breakwater in Warrnambool?

The Warrnambool Aquarium opened in 1971 as a purpose-built, mostly underground marine attraction near the breakwater. Its design was unusual for the time, with concrete domes forming the roof above ground while the main exhibition spaces sat below, allowing visitors to view local marine life in a controlled environment close to the ocean.

The aquarium focused on regional marine species, aiming to educate visitors about the Southern Ocean and coastal ecosystems rather than operate as a large commercial attraction. Despite its innovation, visitor numbers declined over time, and the facility closed in 1997.

After closure, the structure was not demolished. The underground sections were sealed, leaving the domes visible as the most obvious remnant. Over time, they’ve become an informal landmark, often mistaken for bunkers, storm shelters, or public art installations.

Today, the domes remain in place largely because removal would be complex and costly, and because they pose no risk. They’ve quietly transitioned from functional infrastructure to accidental curiosity, part of the layered history of Warrnambool’s waterfront.

2025: Noticing More

We didn’t set out to sum up the year. It crept up on us somewhere between a long, straight road and a place we stayed longer than planned. Looking back now, 2025 wasn’t about ticking things off. It was about paying attention. To towns. To landscapes. To moments that asked us to slow down and actually be there.

Instead of a highlight reel, this feels more like a walk-through. Our favourite stops and roads as they unfolded, in the order we reached them. Dust first. Big sky later.

Lightning Ridge

This is where the year announced itself properly. Opals, characters, stories told sideways, and that unmistakable sense that Australia doesn’t always behave. That unpredictability felt like a reminder. You don’t control the road. You meet it where it is.

Charleville

Not everything new is better. Coming back to Charleville reinforced why returning matters. Familiar faces, shared history, and the comfort of being recognised, even briefly. Some towns feel like checkpoints. Others feel like anchors.

Carnarvon Gorge

This one asked for patience. The longer we stayed, the more it gave back. Time softened the edges. Walks became quieter. The gorge revealed itself slowly, on its own terms.

White Station Healing Circle

A pause rather than a stop. Quiet, considered, and grounding. This wasn’t about seeing something new, but about standing still and listening. We didn’t rush this one. That mattered.

Cooktown

Weeks of road led us here. Sea air after dust. History layered into the landscape. There’s something about reaching a place you’ve been moving toward for a long time. Isabella Falls, just out of town, was a favourite for Zoe too. She noticed things her own way.

Cobbold Gorge

Just when you think you’ve adjusted to the scale of the country, it reminds you who’s boss. Cool water, ancient rock, and a sense of quiet awe that lingered well after we left.

Savannah Way

We ended where we often do. Not at a destination, but somewhere between them. Long days, shifting light, and the steady reminder that the road isn’t just how you get somewhere. It is the thing.

And that was 2025 from inside the motorhome. Messy at times. Quiet at others. Better when we slowed down and noticed more.

Adelaide: A Slow Day of Favourites

We only had one full day in Adelaide this time, so we did what any sensible travellers would do! We crammed in all our favourite things at a pace that still felt nice and relaxed.

Cameron had a spring in his step the moment we hit North Terrace. First stop: the South Australian Museum, where the Australian Geographic Nature Photographer of the Year exhibition was on display. There’s something grounding about standing in front of images that capture moments we’d never see otherwise. Everything from Arctic stillness to tiny creatures we’d probably step over in real life.

Meanwhile, Neil opted for a different kind of pilgrimage: the Adelaide Central Market. He returned later with tales of pastries, cheeses and other treats he claimed were “research.”

Next for Cameron was the Art Gallery of South Australia, which always feels like slipping into familiar shoes. This time, Tarnanthi’s ten-year exhibition was filling the rooms with colour, texture and stories that deserved every quiet minute we spent there. Adelaide’s art scene has a way of stopping you mid-stride.

Wandering next door to the Mortlock Wing of the State Library, where he claimed the title of “library tragic.” With its dark timber balconies and rows of old volumes, it’s the kind of room that whispers rather than speaks. A quick pause, a deep breath, and suddenly the city feels more spacious.

The Botanic Gardens rounded out Cameron’s cultural loop, with the Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition appearing inside the Bicentennial Conservatory, surrounded by warm, humid air and dense greenery, giving flashbacks to our time up north!

It wasn’t a long day in Adelaide, but it was a good one, full of the places that always make us smile. Sometimes the familiar stops are the ones that feel the most like home.

Adelaide

South Australia’s capital blends history, gardens, galleries and good food into an easy-to-navigate city. The cultural strip along North Terrace is one of the best in the country, and everything is surprisingly walkable.

Adelaide is accessible via fully sealed highways from every direction, with plenty of parking near the Botanic Gardens and around the CBD. North Terrace is best explored on foot.

Adelaide is one of those rare capitals that never feels like it’s trying too hard. Everything is close, calm and easy to wander, which makes it perfect for a slow day of museums, gardens, food and the odd detour. These five spots are the ones we keep returning to. Not because they’re flashy, but because they’re steady, interesting and never the same twice.

South Australian Museum

This is our first stop every time. The museum’s natural history galleries are excellent, with everything from megafauna skeletons to meteorites and marine life. The Aboriginal Cultures Gallery is one of the most significant in the country, thoughtfully curated and rich with stories. Whether you’re into fossils, anthropology, deep-time geology or the small creatures most people overlook, there’s always something new to notice. It’s definitely a place where you duck in for half an hour and somehow come out two hours later.

Art Gallery of South Australia

Sitting right next door, the gallery feels like a quiet exhale after the museum’s bustle. The permanent collection blends Australian, Aboriginal, European and Asian works across painting, sculpture, textiles and contemporary art. It’s beautifully arranged, and even on busy days, there’s a sense of calm inside. The gallery also has one of the strongest Indigenous art programs in the country, and the works here always feel grounded in story and place. If you like a gallery that rewards slow wandering, this is the one.

Mortlock Wing, State Library of South Australia

If you’ve ever wanted to walk into a storybook, this is the place. The Mortlock Wing is all dark timber, wrought-iron balconies and rows of old volumes that look like they belong in a Victorian novel. Even if you’re not a library tragic, it’s impossible not to feel a little awe when you step inside. You don’t need to be researching anything, stand quietly, soak in the atmosphere and pretend you’re the protagonist in a period drama. It’s one of the most photographed interiors in Adelaide for a reason.

Adelaide Botanic Gardens

Spread across 50 hectares, the Botanic Garden is a mix of lush rainforest pockets, arid zones, heritage glasshouses and peaceful lawns. The Palm House, a 19th-century glasshouse shipped over from Germany, is a standout, as is the Bicentennial Conservatory, one of the largest single-span glasshouses in the Southern Hemisphere. Wander through wetlands, lily ponds and shady avenues, or sit on a bench and listen to the parrots. It’s one of the easiest places in the city to unwind, and you could spend an entire morning here without noticing the time.

Adelaide Central Market

Neil’s favourite for obvious reasons. The Central Market has been running since 1869 and remains one of Australia’s best food markets. Over 70 traders sell everything from cheese, charcuterie and pastries to seafood, spices and small-batch local produce. It’s colourful, noisy in a friendly way, and smells like six different dinners at once. Whether you’re after breakfast, a snack, or a full pantry restock, it’s one of the happiest places to wander in Adelaide.

Hahndorf: Pretzels, Gin and a Well-Run Dog

Hahndorf draws you in before you’ve even found a park. It’s the mix of old stone buildings, leafy streets and the steady drift of good smells. Pretzels, pastry, woodsmoke, and the occasional waft of sausage all encourage you to slow right down. We spent the better part of a morning wandering the length of the main street, and by the end of it, Zoe was well and truly knackered. She took her self-appointed job as footpath inspector very seriously.

We ducked into the Ambleside gin distillery early afternoon (well…ok, late morning), mainly for a look but also for a tasting paddle for Neil. The botanicals are all grown in the region, and the staff were happy to chat through the differences between each one. A couple of favourites came home with us, purely for educational purposes, of course.

Between distillery stops and window-shopping, we managed to demolish a pretzel or two before moving on to apple strudel. It felt almost mandatory. If you walk past a cafe in Hahndorf, your willpower halves instantly. The whole town leans into its German heritage, and the food makes the point better than any signage ever could.

Later in the afternoon, we took a short drive out to Beerenberg Farm. Stocking the moho pantry was the official excuse, but we both know strawberry jam is the real reason most people roll in. The shelves of condiments, relishes, and sauces made it impossible to choose just one or two, so we didn’t. The moho left heavier.

Hahndorf is one of those towns that works on every level…relaxed, tidy, full of character and easy to explore at your own pace. Whether you’re chasing a slow afternoon, a good feed or a bit of history, it never misses. We’d recommend avoiding weekends, as the place can get paaaacked!

Hahndorf

Settled in 1839 by Prussian immigrants, Hahndorf is Australia’s oldest surviving German settlement. Today it blends heritage charm with modern food, art, wine and farm experiences. Set in the Adelaide Hills, it’s an easy day trip from Adelaide and a favourite for both locals and travellers.

Hahndorf sits about 30 minutes southeast of Adelaide via the South Eastern Freeway. Access is fully sealed, with plenty of parking around the village (though it fills quickly on weekends).
