In June of 2003, an 11-year-old girl by the name of Karnamoni Handsa had no option but to marry one of the area's stray dogs in a ceremony attended by approximately 100 excited guests. Handsa, a resident of Khanyhan in India, reacted surprisingly well to the situation and said to news reporters at the time: "I have no regret in marrying the dog Bacchan. I am fond of the dog who moves around our locality". She had taken Bacchan's paw in marriage in order to ward off an evil spell that had previously caused a tooth to become painfully lodged in her upper gums.

In 2005, 2,000 guests attending a wedding in Atalla, India, were left temporarily disappointed when the groom - a cobra - failed to show at his own ceremony. Determined not to let a case of 'cold tail' ruin her day, 30-year-old bride-to-be Bimbala Das instead continued with the vows in front of a brass replica snake. Speaking of Das' relationship with the reptile, a family member explained: "Bimbala was ill. We had no money to treat her. Then she started offering milk to the snake ... she was cured. That made her fall in love."

3. A Cow

Just last month an 18-year-old man residing on the island of Bali, Indonesia, paid a hefty price after being caught in an amorous clinch with a local cow: he was forced to marry the animal to 'cleanse' the area. Despite claiming in his defense that the cow had been flirting with him prior to the incident, the wedding went ahead in front of hundreds of onlookers; such was the resultant stress, Ngurah Alit passed out at the altar. The cow was later killed for his troubles.

4. A Goat

Local authorities in Juba, Sudan, furiously demanded that local goat-fan Charles Tombe marry the object of his desires back in 2006 after he was caught naked with the animal in the middle of the night. After being ordered to pay the goat's owner compensation, Tombe wed Rose in front of the local population. Sadly the next year, presumably just as the honeymoon period was beginning to wear off, Rose choked on a plastic bag and passed away. Local police reported no foul play.

5. A Dolphin

Millionaire concert producer Sharon Tendler, then 41, decided in 2005 to take the bull by the horns and marry a dolphin whilst holidaying at the Israeli resort of Eilat for the umpteenth time. Since first visiting the area 15 years previous, Tendler had been returning two or three times every year and gradually built up a strong relationship with the female dolphin, but until 2005 hadn't considered marrying the mammal in a same-sex, interspecies ceremony. After the waterside wedding, the new bride said: "I'm the happiest girl on earth. I made a dream come true, and I am not a pervert".

6. A Cat

Fearing the feline love of his life was close to death due to chronic asthma and obesity, 39-year-old postman Uwe Mitzscherlich decided earlier this year to marry his cat in Possendorf, Germany. Of course, marrying a cat is illegal, even in Germany, and so Mitzscherlich was forced to pay a local actress 300 Euros to 'officiate' at the heart-warming ceremony. Speaking to journalists, the frail cat's owner/husband said: "Cecilia is such a trusting creature. We cuddle all the time and she has always slept in my bed".

1. The Sociable

Okay, so the sociable isn't technically a tandem bicycle as the seats are situated side-by-side rather than one-behind-the-other, but it's a bicycle made for two nonetheless. Presumably, balancing on such a bicycle is no easy feat, particularly if its riders are of wildly varying weights. Below is a not-very graceful video of a sociable in action.

2. Tandem Unicycle

In combining two vehicles - the tandem and the unicycle, both of which are already difficult to ride - the creator of the tandem unicyle has in effect given birth to what I can only assume is a mode of transport which is nearly impossible to control at all, let alone romantically with a loved one. An attempt by its inventor to ride the thing can be watched below.

3. SeeSaw

The mind boggles when attempting to come to terms with the design of the SeeSaw Bike. As if riding a tandem bike face-to-face with your partner wasn't off-putting enough, with the SeeSaw both of you are sitting at different angles. Guaranteed carnage. Unfortunately no video of the bike in action could be found; maybe because such a thing is impossible, but hopefully not.

4. Back-2-Back

If you've ever had to sit the wrong way round on a moving train, you'll know just how odd and sometimes sickening that feeling is; so imagine just how stomach-churning it must be to ride reverse on a back-to-back tandem bicycle. The example in the photo above goes by the name of a 'Bi-Cycle', whilst the video below shows a different back-to-back tandem in action, and at quite a speed.

5. Face-2-Face

Built in 2008, Chen Yugang's bizarre but technically impressive transforming tandem bicycle has the best/worst of all three worlds, in that you have the option of riding conventionally, face-to-face or back-to-back. Due to its clever design, the bike's frame can be shifted around to accomodate either set-up.

1. The Girlfriend Keeper

The Girlfriend Keeper app is essentially an automated boyfriend, developed to ensure that you contact your girlfriend as much as you should. You notify it of your relationship's seriousness, apply a contact frequency and then choose texts, emails or both to be sent to your partner. Your girlfriend will then receive messages such as, "Diana, You have the prettiest green eyes I could ever imagine, I can't believe we have been dating for 1 year and 53 days. -Evan". The risk factor is high, unless you genuinely do possess the writing style of a robot.

2. My Little Black Book

My Little Black Book is exactly as you'd imagine: a digital black book. It's even openly marketed at 'players'. As with the iPhone's standard address book, each contact - be it a potential or existing date - is given his or her own profile and after dates have taken place you can then rate the venue or person, attach related photos, or make general notes such as 'Must ignore his calls in future'. Eventually your iPhone will contain an enormous database of hits and misses, all securely protected by a pin number.

3. Date Check

Are you extremely paranoid? Do you ever wish it was easier to run background checks on potential dates before deciding on your next move? Enter DateCheck, a rather creepy but fascinating app that does exactly that should you provide it with basic information such as name and date of birth. Within minutes, and after parting with money for certain fees, you will know his or her criminal history, living situation, and even net worth. By the time you get to the date you'll feel incredibly safe but won't have any questions left which need answering.

4. Date Escape

Most of us have experienced that point in the evening when the date is clearly not working for one reason or another, the awkward silences are now frequently deafening, and all you want is the green light to go home and watch TV. Date Escape aims to assist with that moment, but in a completely immature fashion which will do your reputation - should you have one - no favours. Simply press (or 'punch') the heart and up will pop an excuse sure to disgust or disappoint your date. The excuse shown in the picture above is a fairly good indication of the joys to come. It's free at least.

5. Excuse Me

Just as cowardly as Date Escape, but rather more tactful, is Excuse Me, an app designed to give you a seemingly legitimate opportunity to escape a bad date. All you need to do is choose a countdown using the screen seen above and then wait for your ring-tone to sound. Of course the phone won't actually be ringing, but your date won't be able to tell, especially since a fake woman's/man's voice will be heard on the other end. You can then make your excuses and leave.

Prisoner of Love

In June of this year, a dating show by the name of Prisoner of Love was picked up by Dutch broadcaster NCRV. Set to air in 2010, the concept is as simple as it is ridiculous. A selection of women, all looking for love, are sent on blind dates with some newly-released ex-cons. As if the possibility of finding love wasn't alluring enough for the contestants, at the end of the date the women are given the opportunity to guess what their dates were sent to prison for in order to win a prize. So romantic!

Wolfboy: Divorced and Looking for Love

31 year old Larry Ramos Gomez has suffered from a condition known as hypertrichosis his entire life, and as a result has a full face of hair. Better known as Wolfboy, Gomez was recently approached by a company called Zoo Productions and asked to star in a dating show sensitively titled Wolfboy: Divorced and Looking for Love, in which he will be filmed attempting to find his soulmate. Of course, Zoo Productions deny all accusations relating to the exploitation of Gomez's condition. The show will apparently air next year.

Monstrous Love

Dutch broadcaster SBS caused a storm of controversy in 2007 when they appealed for people with a 'visible, serious handicap' to come forward and perhaps become a contestant on a new dating show they were attempting to develop. More specifically, they asked to see applicants with eyes missing and/or severe facial burns or scars. They then denied claims that the show's format was tasteless, even though the working title for the project was 'Monstrous Love'. Oddly enough, the show fell off the radar following the furore.

Who Wants To Marry A U.S. Citizen?

Who Wants to Marry a U.S. Citizen was a show devised by the geniuses at Morusa Media in California in 2007, and by the end of that year they already had the first pool of contestants and a host signed up. The idea? A lucky, single American woman goes on dates with three handsome but illegal immigrants and at the end picks one with which to spend the rest of her life. Said the host Angelo Gonzales before the show presumably fell through: 'There are thousands of US citizens seeking a spouse, and just as many immigrants seeking the same. So we want to make it a win-win situation for all involved'. Who can argue?

Rather than send a normal letter indicating his intentions, William decided to draw pictures to form some of the text. This cute little porker, aptly named Valentine, was just 10 days old when this photo was taken and is a Gloucester Old Spot piglet. However, the little beast's heart-shaped marking hasn't deceived farmer Eric Freeman who maintains that Old Spots are 'much more succulent' than most other breeds. Mmmm.

A catchy title and some more unusual interests can go a long way.
