The points from last year’s Mubadala Citi Open drop off Monday, just as this year’s edition kicks off.

So that’s a meaningful thing for some players, including champion Leylah Fernandez.

Fernandez drops out of the top 30 after the points from her amazing run a year ago drop off. And she’ll have to do a fair bit to get back inside as she takes the event on this week as the No. 7 seed.

Meanwhile, the smaller events in Europe that bridge the gap between Wimbledon and the North American summer hardcourt season were very, very good to both a kid – Lilli Tagger – and a veteran – Tamara Korpatsch.

Tagger won her their first career WTA title; Korpatsch her second.

The hard-court season begins in earnest, but without the top two Canadians.

Victoria Mboko, out of the grass season with her knee injury, is out of the hard-court season as well – including Toronto, where she’s defending her title, and the US Open.

Félix Auger-Aliassime, who parted ways with his longtime coach after Wimbledon, withdrew from the Washington event. He’s in Montreal this week training, and also appearing at a Tennis Canada fundraiser on Tuesday night.

But Leylah Fernandez, Denis Shapovalov and Gabriela Diallo are kicking it off. And with a joint 125-level event in Vancouver with the return of the Odlum Brown Open, plenty of Canadian content.

(Gauff had never done particularly much at Wimbledon after breaking out there in her first appearance. So making the semis was an excellent result. And she came within a whisper of making the final, too).

Karolina Muchova (CZE): No. 9 =========> No. 6
(An incredible tournament for the 29-year-old Czech, who fell just short at the last time of asking. She is less than 140 points out of the top five, and at a career high).

Linda Noskova (CZE): No. 12 =========> No. 7
(Noskova had been in the top 10 before, for a little while. But with this most unexpected Wimbledon title, she’s at a career best No. 7 and in fine shape to qualify for the year-end finals at Indian Wells. She had a good draw, ’tis true. But she absolutely made the most of it and despite a major swoon in the second set when she had it in hand, rallied beautiful to win it in three).

Marta Kostyuk (UKR): No. 13 =========> No. 11
(You liked Kostyuk’s chances to take the title at this wide open Wimbledon. But in the end she was no match for Noskova, and had to settle for a career high).

Alexandra Eala (PHI): No. 32 =========> No. 28
(Eala had a splendid grass season. And she made the second week at Wimbledon to move to a new career high).

Barbora Krejcikova (CZE): No. 38 =========> No. 32
(The former No. 2 is rallying her ranking and is back in the top 32 after making the fourth round at Wimbledon. She’s in Athens at a WTA 250 this week to try to make more moves).

(Sakkari is back in the top 40 after making the third round at Wimbledon. She, too, is in Athens to play the WTA 250 – no surprise, of course, given she’s the best Greek player on the women’s side and it’s at home).

(Kessler continues to be quiet this year. But just winning one match at Wimbledon gets her back into the top 50).

(It’s a long way back for the former No. 2, who lost in the first round at Wimbledon. But she swallowed her ego and went to Bastad to play a WTA 125 on clay. And won it. She’s playing another clay event in Romania this week).

(Anisimova made the Wimbledon final a year ago. But this year, she, too went out in the third round).

Victoria Mboko (CAN): No. 10 =========> No. 12
(Mboko exits the top 10 after injuring herself in a Wimbledon warmup, and missing the big event. It doesn’t cost her much now. But she’s also out of the Canadian event with the knee injury. That will drop her more, even if she has banked points at a lot of other points in the season to buffer the loss).

Emma Raducanu (GBR): No. 33 =========> No. 38
(Raducanu is injured again. And instead of shining at her home Slam, she was seen out and about in London wearing a boot on her foot).

Elisabetta Cocciaretto (ITA): No. 46 =========> No. 68
(Cocciaretto lost in the first round of Wimbledon, after making the third round a year ago. She then went to Sweden and won a WTA 125 on clay. She didn’t return to defend it this time).

Liudmila Samsonova (RUS): No. 41 =========> No. 69
(Samsonova, a former No. 12, has fallen quickly this year. She loses in the third round. But she made the quarterfinals a year ago. So that’s a steep dive. A year ago, she was ranked No. 19).

Solana Sierra (ARG): No. 56 =========> No. 86
(Sierra was crazy close to knocking out Gauff in the second round, going out in a match tiebreak. But she went out. And after qualifying and making the fourth round a year ago without even the benefit of a tuneup on grass, her ranking takes a hit).

Laura Siegemund (GER): No. 40 =========> No. 87
(Similar situation for the 38-year-old Siegemund, knocked out in the first round by Elise Mertens after making the quarters a year ago. It drops her out of the top 80).

The two men who reached the Wimbledon singles final are now the top two ranked players in the world as Alexander Zverev moves ahead of Carlos Alcaraz and into the second spot.

There were some small movements in the top 10 this week. But a lot of big dips as players didn’t match their 2025 results.

And what of British wild card Arthur Fery?

He came in outside the top 100. He leaves in the top 40 – and the No. 1 ranked Brit.

(He didn’t win. But Alexander Zverev is the No. 2 player in the world after he gained nearly 1,300 point, and the absent Carlos Alcaraz lost as many, in making the final. As he rightly pointed out, he’s had a great two months).

Alex de Minaur (AUS): No. 6 ==========> No. 5
(As much of a crisis of confidence as he had during Wimbledon, where he made the fourth round, de Minaur is now a top-five player after the tournament).

Learner Tien (USA): No. 17 ==========> No. 15
(He lost in the second round. But despite not gaining any points, Tien moves up to the top 15 for the first time).

Alejandro Davidovich Fokina (ESP): No. 23 ==========> No. 20
(Davidovich Fokina lost in the fourth round to Félix Auger-Aliassime. But he’s back in the top 20. He’s playing Umag this week).

(The shocker of the tournament was the British-French wild card getting to the semifinals on a wild card and zooming into the top 40 as a result. With Cameron Norrie dropping a load of points and Jack Draper missing so much time, that puts this fellow. in as the … No. 1 Brit as of Monday).

(When the 36-year-old German is good, he’s dangerous. He just hasn’t done it consistently enough through his career. But a super run to the quarterfinals puts him on the cusp of returning to the top 40 again).

Matteo Berrettini (ITA): No. 51 ==========> No. 43
(A tough opener as Berrettini drew Stan Wawrinka. But he got through that one before losing in the third round to another classic, Grigor Dimitrov, in five sets).

Hubert Hurkacz (POL): No. 96 ==========> No. 68
(Nice work from Hurkacz, who made the second week of Wimbledon).

Jan Choinski (GBR): No. 100 ==========> No. 75
(Choinski was at a career high coming into Wimbledon, JUST making the top 100. His second-round effort, plus winning a Challenger in Germany the second week, puts him solidly in and close to getting into the full-draw Masters 1000 without having to qualify).

Roman Safiullin (RUS): No. 132 ==========> No. 96
(It wasn’t so long ago that Safiullin thought he might never make it back from injury. Hence all the tears after he upset Andrey Rublev in a fifth-set match tiebreak in the first round. He did it again against Botic Van de Zandschulp in heh second round, and straight-setted Joao Fonseca before going out to Novak Djokovic. He went from the qualifying to the fourth round and is back inside the top 100).

Zsombor Piros (HUN): No. 169 ==========> No. 120
(Piros, 26, lost in the second round of Wimbledon. But he made hay, winning Challengers in Brasov and Iasi to make a nice leap in the rankings).

Michael Zheng (USA): No. 144 ==========> No. 121
(The Columbia graduate is out on his first real year on Tour. And after qualifying he made the third round of Wimbledon before losing to Auger-Aliassime).

Jacob Fearnley (GBR): No. 159 ==========> No. 123
(Fearnley, another product of the US college system, made it to No. 49 in just a year ago. But he’s missed some time due to injury. He lost in the second round of Wimbledon, but made it to the semifinals of the Newport grass event last week).

Nicolas Mejia (COL): No. 165 ==========> No. 133
(Mejia qualified and won a round at Wimbledon. Then he went all the way back home to play a Challenger on clay in Bogota the second week. And won it to get to a career high. Interesting tidbit about him: He made the Wimbledon boys’ semifinals back in 2018, and played an insane match that didn’t get as much attention as it should have because of what was going on at the same time. He lost to Jack Draper, in the days before the match tiebreak. It went 19-17 in the third set and he was basically faceplanted the last part, he was so exhausted. It took four hours, 23 minutes. Mejia ended up No. 4 junior in the world after that one. What was going on? Kevin Anderson and John Isner were going … 26-24 in the fifth in the men’s semis. It took him EIGHT years to get back to the AELTC, and this was his Grand Slam main-draw debut. Every player has a story. I would have loved to write that one this year).

Alexis Galarneau (CAN): No. 179 ==========> No. 158
(Galarneau has put up some good tennis this spring and summer, even if he hasn’t gotten out of Grand Slam qualifying. And he did that again in Newport on grass last week, upsetting top seed Adrian Mannarino and getting to the semifinals. He’s just five off his career-best ranking).

(Sonego is better than his ranking; he got to No. 21 in the world back in 2021. But he lost in the third round of Wimbledon after after making the fourth round last year. So he drops out of the top 80).

(Cilic is another one who had a lot of points to defend this year, from a fourth round a year ago that included a win over then-No. 4 Jack Drapere. He was out in the first round to Daniil Medvedev in a hot minute, and drops).

The final day of a topsy-turvy Wimbledon, during which the roof was used only because of the late night matches.

And never because of the rain.

It’s actually ironic that since Wimbledon got the roofs over Centre Court and No. 1 Court, the rain hasn’t been nearly the factor it used to be.

But in the end, the top two seeds in the gentlemen’s singles are there on the final day. And the best player won.

And in the women’s doubles, Gabriela Dabrowski and Luisa Stefani were the major favorites to win their first major title together. But they got off to a slow start, and they never fully recovered.

In these “what have you done for me lately” times, some coach-player relationships last the cycle between two Grand Slams.

And then there is Félix Auger-Aliassime and Frédéric Fontang.

Fontang, a Frenchman, has been a part of Auger-Aliassime’s tennis life for nearly a decade. But after arguably Auger-Aliassime’s best Grand Slam effort in the Wimbledon quarterfinals on Tuesday, the 25-year-old Canadian announced Friday that they are no more.

That’s after years of pundits and online experts and even well-meaning fans calling for the split.

Because changing the coach is always easier than changing the player, in any sport.

Felix the loyal

Auger-Aliassime hasn’t known many coaches during his career. When Tennis Canada was paying, he worked with now head of men’s tennis Guillaume Marx.

And then, by 2019, Marx and Fontang – friends for 35 years, going back to the juniors – split duties.

Here they are at the IMG Academy before the 2019 season, talking about that.

And then, by the following yeard, Fontang – who was also a coach with the Canadian Davis Cup team – was running things solo.

The pair have been through some things. A lot of good things. And a lot of tough periods that were exacerbated by the fact that Auger-Aliassime was so precocious, people just expected he would rise to the top of the sport as if it were no big deal.

It’s never that easy. And Auger-Aliassime came out of the juniors having done yeoman’s work making his forehand a weapon.

But somewhere along the way, the backhand got neglected.

It was never a secret that this was an Achilles heel. The opponents knew it. His coach knew it.

But once a player is into his 20s, no matter what a coach – any voice – might say, it becomes an extremely difficult task to make a major stroke change.

But no matter what, Auger-Aliassime always had the same approach, at least publicly. He consistently maintained that the problem to solve was his and his alone. It wasn’t his coach’s fault. And that he alone could find the solution.

It was a remarkable streak of lucidity and loyalty.

And in the end, he may well have been proven right.

Going out on a high

It’s notable that the news was announced now – just days after arguably Auger-Aliassime’s finest match in a Grand Slam tournament.

Although that wasn’t the decision maker, as it had already clearly been decided before the tournament.

If Auger-Aliassime had been flattened by his lack of seizing the moment in the quarterfinals at Roland Garros, it was just the opposite just a month later in the quarterfinals of Wimbledon.

On Tuesday, he battled seven-time champion Novak Djokovic for five hours and 15 minutes before finally faltering in the match tiebreak.

Until the very, very end, he played arguably the best match of his career given the circumstances and the stakes.

And Fontang leaves with Auger-Aliassime at No. 4 in the rankings, a career high.

Next step the steepest

The next rung to climb on the ladder, if indeed he can climb it, is the steepest one.

So you could argue that it’s actually the perfect time to start a new chapter.

Then again, Auger-Aliassime generally does things the right way; long before he was a grown man, he had a precocious maturity that matched his physical precocity.

So this is just another example.
