As much as I’d love to be standing behind the ropes at Amen Corner, I am once again watching from the comfort of my living room. Since the Masters moved to an online lottery system, getting my hands on tickets has felt like trying to sink a 60-foot putt in a gale—nearly impossible. A Core Memory on the Ice: Three Days with Bam’s Tour on Lake Nipissing

If you are looking for a quintessential Northern Ontario winter experience that balances rugged adventure with genuine hospitality, look no further than Bam’s Tours on Lake Nipissing. My son, Gus, and I recently returned from a three-day stint in one of their ice bungalows. Now that Gus is 18, our trips have taken on a new dynamic, and this experience was the perfect way to spend some quality time together as adults.

The Setup

Lake Nipissing is famous for its vastness and its walleye, but it can be intimidating if you don't know the layout. Bam’s makes the logistics seamless. From the moment we arrived, the team was organized and welcoming. We were transported out to our "home on the ice"—a sturdy, well-maintained ice shack that felt surprisingly cozy despite the frozen expanse outside.

The shack was clean, pre-heated, and equipped with the essentials. The layout worked well for two grown men; we had enough space to move around comfortably, and most importantly, the holes were pre-drilled and ready for lines the second we walked in. (which we did;)

The Fishing & The Tech

Over the course of seventy-two hours, Gus and I had our fair share of action. Nipissing is known for its "golden hour," and the walleye didn't disappoint(Although no trophies). We also pulled up some aggressive perch and the occasional whitefish that kept us on our toes.

A major highlight for us was the ability to rent a Garmin Livescope through Bam's. Even at 18, Gus is a tech-focused angler, and having that forward-facing sonar turned the trip into a masterclass in fish behaviour. It turned the experience from "waiting for a bite" into a strategic game where we could actually see the walleye cruise in, inspect our lures, and decide whether or not to commit. It sparked plenty of competitive banter between us as we watched the screen.

What sets Bam’s apart is their local knowledge. They don't just drop you in a random spot; they clearly track the schools and position their shacks over productive structures. The guides checked in on us regularly, offering tips on what depth the fish were hitting and ensuring our Livescope was dialled in for the best view.

The Experience

While the fishing was great, the real value of Bam’s Tour is the "off-grid" bonding time. There is something special about waking up on the frozen lake, brewing coffee while watching the Livescope, and spending the evenings catching up over a few beers while the wind howls outside.

The staff at Bam’s understands this balance. They provide enough support to keep you safe and successful, but give you enough space to enjoy the solitude of the lake. Their equipment—from the transportation, portable generator to the Garmin Livescope—was reliable, making for a stress-free trip.

Gus is already asking when we can go back next year. That’s the only endorsement I need.

During our recent trip to Turning Stone Resort, Gus and I were blown away by the course conditions—every fairway, green, and tee box felt dialled in to a standard you don’t often see across an entire property. What impressed us even more was that one of the courses we played had recently undergone aeration, yet it still rolled better than many courses at their peak. That level of consistency doesn’t happen by accident.

To get a deeper look at how Turning Stone maintains such elite playing conditions across its portfolio of courses, we sat down with the resort’s head agronomist. In this Q&A, we dig into the philosophy, planning, and behind-the-scenes dedication that keeps Turning Stone among the best-conditioned golf destinations you can play. .

How do you handle the unique challenges of turfgrass management at a large resort property?

Each course has its own personality, so we tailor maintenance programs around what makes them unique from soil type and sunlight exposure to the style of play. Our superintendents and supervisors talk daily about weather, moisture, and course setup so we can stay ahead of issues and keep things consistent. It’s really about teamwork and being adaptable when things change, whether that’s a tournament week, a stretch of bad weather, or just a busy weekend with heavy play.

What is your approach to water management, and how do you ensure consistency in golf course playability?

Water is always one of the biggest challenges, especially when you’re trying to keep things firm and playable across multiple courses. We try to water based on what the turf actually needs, not just what the schedule says. Our team uses moisture meters and weather data every day, but a lot of it still comes down to experience and being out there seeing how the turf is reacting. We’ll hand-water greens and hot spots when things get dry instead of just running heads across the whole course. This summer was definitely challenging with the 60 days of minimal rain. When we get stretches of dry weather, the goal shifts from “making it green” to “keeping it alive.” That approach helps us stay consistent day to day and try to reach our goals of firm, fast, and healthy without overdoing it.

How do you manage wear and tear on the course from high traffic, especially during peak season?

High traffic is always a challenge, especially with a busy golf season. We try to stay ahead of it by spreading out the wear by rotating hole locations, tee markers, and traffic flow patterns every day. Little adjustments like that make a big difference over time.

How do you ensure a consistent level of conditioning across the entire golf course?

Our team works off detailed schedules so every part of the course gets the same attention and the same standards. Even with five courses on property, we use the same products, mowing heights, and cultural practices so the look and playability are consistent everywhere.

Can you provide an example of a challenging project, like a renovation, that you’ve managed and overcome obstacles during?

Our last big project was the bunker renovation at Atunyote. We planned the work for spring and fall to have the least impact on the guest experience, but that also meant dealing with some tough weather. Cold mornings, rain delays, and short daylight hours made it a challenge to stay on schedule. In the end, it all came together really well. The new bunkers look great, play great, and are much easier to maintain — a big win for both golfers and the maintenance crew.

What is your overall vision for improving the golf course, and what steps would you take to achieve it?

Our vision is simple — to keep elevating the guest experience while making the courses more efficient to maintain long-term. We want every golfer, whether it’s their first time here or their tenth, to feel like the course is in peak condition every day. We always tell the team being a Resort we have one chance to impress.

That means focusing on the details: improving drainage, updating irrigation for better precision, refining bunker edges, and continuing to invest in new technology and equipment. Small upgrades across the property add up to a big difference in consistency and presentation.

But that afternoon (after playing Atunyote) at Sandstone Hollow reminded us that sometimes the best golf happens in small moments, not long yardages. Tight tee shots, slopes that make a simple chip feel like a puzzle, greens that reward a confident stroke and punish hesitation — and all in a relaxed setting where score matters less than the smiles between swings.

Par-3 courses are having a moment in golf. And honestly, it’s easy to see why. They make the game more accessible, more fun, and less about grinding through four-plus hours and more about being together. You don’t need a bomber driver or a tour-level bag. You just need a handful of clubs, a good attitude, and someone you enjoy being around. It’s golf distilled down to what we all fell in love with in the first place.

For us, it was one of those rounds where time slows down a little. Where a pure wedge feels just as satisfying as a flushed drive. Where the biggest debate of the day became whether a high soft shot or a little bump-and-run was the play. There’s something about returning to Turning Stone Resort that always feels familiar. Gus and I have played its courses in the sun, the rain, and everything in between — but this time, it was The Dome that called us back. On a cool morning, with a light mist outside, it just felt like the perfect place to shake off the rust and share a few swings together before we hit our round at Shenendoah.

Walking into The Dome is like stepping into a golfer’s playground. The sound of crisp iron shots echoing off the walls, the faint scent of fresh turf, and rows of golfers chasing that perfect strike — it all brings a smile. Gus and I grabbed a bay and settled in, alternating swings, teasing each other about old rounds and mis-hits that have become part of our family golf lore.

What I love most is how golf always finds a way to reconnect us. Between his military reserve schedule and grade 12 and my work, we don’t always get as much time together as we used to. But here, surrounded by the thump of golf balls and the soft glow of TrackMan screens, it felt like we were right back where we left off — just father and son, laughing, competing, and talking about which course we want to tackle next season.

Father-Son Golf & Baseball Adventures: A Stop at the Baseball Hall of Fame

On our latest father-son golf trip, Gus and I made a small detour that turned into one of the highlights of our journey — our very first visit to the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown. We’d talked about it for years, and finally walking through those doors felt like stepping into the heart of the game itself.

Cooperstown has this timeless charm that makes every baseball fan feel at home. The streets were filled with people in their favorite team jerseys — Yankees, Red Sox, Mets, Cubs, and even a few Blue Jays like us. There’s something special about being surrounded by fans who all share the same love and respect for the game’s history.

Inside the Hall, it was almost overwhelming how much there was to see. From walls lined with bobbleheads to the Yakyu Baseball Exhibit which contains memorabilia from well known players such as Shohei Ohtani and the first Japanese Hall of Fame inductee Ichiro Suzuki. Really shows you how far baseball’s reach has grown, every corner told a story. Gus was drawn to the interactive displays and the legends he’s only seen on TV, while I couldn’t help but linger in front of the Toronto Blue Jays and Montreal Expos memorabilia. Seeing those familiar logos brought back memories of childhood summers, backyard games, and the moments that made me love baseball in the first place.

We ran out of time long before we were ready to leave. There were still rooms we hadn’t explored and stories we hadn’t read — but that just means we have the perfect excuse to come back.

After leaving the Hall, we headed to the Leatherstocking Golf Club, right on the shores of Otsego Lake. It turned out to be one of the most scenic and enjoyable rounds we’ve ever played together — the kind of round that feels less like a game and more like a memory in the making.

Baseball, golf, and time with my son — it doesn’t get much better than that. This stop in Cooperstown was another chapter in our Father-Son Golf & Baseball Adventures, and one we’ll be talking about for a long time.

From the moment we pulled up, there was something special in the air. The course, tucked along the edge of Otsego Lake, has that classic, old-school feel that makes you slow down and take it all in. Designed over a century ago, it’s the kind of place where every hole feels like it’s been part of the land forever—rolling hills, tall trees, and water views that sneak up on you at just the right moments.

Playing with Gus made it even better. There’s something about being on the course with your kid that hits differently—the quiet moments between shots, the friendly competition, the shared laughs when one of us hits a tree or drains a long putt we had no business making. Leatherstocking has that perfect mix of challenge and charm. The par-3s are beautifully designed, and the 18th hole, with its downhill approach toward the lake, is pure magic. Watching Gus hit his tee shot into that narrow fairway with the lake shimmering behind it is one of those golf moments I’ll never forget.

After the round, we wandered into Cooperstown, which feels like stepping into a Norman Rockwell painting. Baseball fans know it for the Hall of Fame, but even if you’ve never picked up a bat, it’s impossible not to fall for the place. The small-town charm, the old buildings, the friendly locals—it all adds to the feeling that you’ve found something timeless. Father and Son Return to Turning Stone: A Golf Trip Seven Years in the Making

Seven Years can pass in the blink of an eye. The last time my son, Gus, and I teed it up at Turning Stone Resort, he was just 10 years old — more focused on hitting the cart horn and chasing golf balls than keeping score. This fall, we came back, now with Gus in his late teens, ready to take on the big courses for real. What we found was the same world-class golf destination we remembered, but with a whole new sense of fun, challenge, and connection.

The Return to Turning Stone

Turning Stone Resort, in Verona, New York, remains one of the best golf destinations in the Northeast — a mix of championship-calibre courses, top-notch facilities, and the kind of hospitality that makes every visit feel special. For us, it was the perfect setting for a father-and-son golf reunion.

We planned three rounds: the mighty Atunyote, the scenic Shenandoah, and a relaxed late afternoon spin around the par-3 Sandstone Hollow.

Atunyote – The Big Stage

Our trip started at Atunyote, the crown jewel of Turning Stone and former host of the PGA Tour’s Turning Stone Championship. The moment you turn onto that private entrance road, you know you’re somewhere special.

The course was immaculate(even though it had been recently aerated) — wide fairways framed by pristine bunkering, still fast greens, and flawless conditioning from tee to green. Gus couldn’t get over how “tour-ready” it looked, and I couldn’t help but think how far his game (and patience!) had come since our first visit.

It’s a course that demands respect but rewards good golf shots. We didn’t light up the scoreboard, but we had our moments — a beautiful chip in birdie on the 2nd hole, a clutch par save from the rough on 18. It was golf at its purest — challenging, beautiful, and shared between father and son.

Hollow – The Perfect Finish

After Atunyote, we decided we needed more golf and shuttled over to play Sandstone Hollow, the resort’s fun and underrated par-3 course designed by Rick Smith. It’s short, scenic, and ideal for winding down the day.
We made a friendly match out of it — no pressure, just some good-natured competition. Gus edged me out by one stroke, earning bragging rights and proving that the student may have finally passed the teacher.
Sandstone Hollow was the perfect closing note for the day— a reminder of how golf brings generations together, from first swings to full-grown games.

Shenandoah – Rain, Laughs, and Memories

The next day brought steady rain and gray skies, but that didn’t stop us. Shenandoah may not have the tournament pedigree of Atunyote, but it’s every bit as enjoyable. The course twists through wooded terrain and wetlands, offering a mix of strategy and scenery.

Despite the soggy weather, the course held up impressively. The greens rolled true, the fairways drained well, and the staff made sure everyone still felt welcome. Gus and I laughed our way through the puddles — the kind of round that reminds you that golf isn’t just about scores; it’s about stories.

Walking off that final green, I couldn’t help but think back to our first trip — Gus barely tall enough to see over the steering wheel of the golf cart, now driving it like a pro and outdriving me on half the holes. Turning Stone hadn’t changed much: still beautifully maintained, still welcoming, still first-class in every detail. But what had changed was us — and that made the return all the more meaningful.

Turning Stone gave us more than just great golf. It gave us a chance to reconnect, to laugh, and to measure time not in years, but in fairways walked and memories made.

It was late June, and I realized my golf wardrobe needed a serious upgrade—lots of boring grey and dull colours. Although I've been quiet on social media and conducted very few reviews over the last few years, I've contacted companies through my Instagram feed to see if they'd be interested in a golf apparel review. When I started this blogging and writing gig, I had a great rapport with Puma and was doing many reviews of their apparel and shoes; getting golf stuff for review had now faded over the years.

Why not upgrade my boring attire? Yes, I was busy with my full-time job and working five mornings a week at the golf course, but I needed an upgrade, and honestly, that old adage, "Look good, feel good," I think I needed to feel some of that.

I sent out many requests for reviews. I hadn't realized that, over the years, golf apparel companies had taken on a life of their own. There are so many unique products; some are known to me, and others are not. Many companies were excellent at offering me discounts. However, Jersey Ninja, based in Raleigh, North Carolina, offered to send me a polo for free to review.

How does greenkeeping in Cape Breton, Canada, vary from other parts of the world where you’ve worked?

Amazing golf locations are often remote, this plays to the magic and atmosphere created when visiting a distant location, but also creates its own micro issues. Due to this remoteness, equipment and regular supplies have to be planned ahead to ensure that the business can achieve deadlines. However, the largest hurdle is recruiting talented people. With so many golf courses looking for talented turf professionals and with a decreasing pool of people to pull from, coupled with our remote location, this is an incredible challenge.

I was lucky to have played Cabot Links in 2012 and Cabot Cliffs in 2016. What, in your opinion, makes these two properties so unique?

You are one of the few who have enjoyed a visit to Cabot Cape Breton and experienced both golf courses. Both golf courses have phenomenal designs, each creating a unique experience that makes the journey to Cape Breton worthwhile. Both courses have their own character, allowing players to compare, contrast and debate which is better! However, the course designs have a strong feeling of playing links golf, the original game, the ball's bump and run, and the luck and misfortune of every shot played in all weather elements. The feel of being so close to nature and enhanced with the wiry fescue turf is a vital part of the feel of being in Scotland, an essential part of any visit.

With all the accolades both courses have gotten over the years, is there any pressure for you and the Cape Breton Team to maintain this standard?

There is significant pressure to maintain our standards and understand how these can be further enhanced. There is a growing number of talented golf course designers creating new and beautiful properties that Cabot has to compete with, both in Canada and worldwide. As turf managers, we recognize that we are very much in the entertainment business and want to ensure our guests have a positive experience and memory to cherish. So, there is a lot of investment in time and money to ensure our high standards are implemented but still create an environment for our teams to help develop new ways to evolve and improve these standards.

What courses, seminars, education, etc., do you have lined up for this year to maintain that edge?

During the winter months lay host to many of the important turf conferences with our turf association bodies. These are normally held in US, UK, Cananda and Australia, where both the opportunity to learn from peer reviewed research, new product developments, learning new effects of legislation on our properties. But also, a time to network and meet with existing peers and to meet new ones. This generates a very valuable network of growth in knowledge. The turf industry is one of the very few industries where knowledge and ideas are freely shared, allowing others to learn and use at our own properties. I also try to take the chance to visit other properties in season, to see what is being achieved and created and what could I weave into our own operation to improve our own customer experience.

What advice would you give someone looking to get into the agronomy side of the golf industry, knowing what you know?

It is one of the most rewarding and exciting professions where knowledge, experience and help is freely available. You will be entering an industry where you will make so many friends and acquaintances that could be spread right across the globe. This industry will stretch your knowledge and imagination covering so many aspects of our role that isn’t just limited to agronomy. People and talent development, environment management, fiscal awareness, project management and construction, chemistry, biology, presenting and sharing experience just to name a few. It simply is more than mowing grass.

What is your background/history? (your present position and previous positions)

I grew up outside of Raleigh NC and began working on a golf course at the age of 15. My uncle was a superintendent and that was my first job. I attended N.C. State university and got a degree in Turfgrass Management. I took my first Assistant Superintendent position at Dunes West Golf Club near Charleston, SC. From there I moved to Williamsburg, VA to help in the construction and grow-in of Royal New Kent and Stonehouse golf courses. Both were designed by Mike Strantz, who I had met and befriended during my time in Charleston. From there I went to Tobacco Road Golf Club an assistant superintendent and eventually superintendent. I remained at Tobacco road from 1998 until May of 2023. I am now currently the golf course superintendent at Methodist University.

What challenges do you face as a golf course superintendent?

I think our biggest challenge agronomically is always the weather and the unpredictability of it and being able to adjust accordingly. However, like all businesses we are all challenged with finding and retaining good help. Keeping up with golfer expectations with fewer people and a busier golf course is definitely very challenging.

Having the only private golf facility/golf course for PGA Golf Management students, how does that differ from other places you've worked?

It is definitely very different from most golf courses. The course is essentially closed from early May when the students head home to early August when they return. I don’t have the pressure of preparing the golf course for 200 people every day, but I still want the students to have a good experience. There are no tee times unless they have an event of some sort, so they pretty much have the course at their disposal. It’s also interesting to get to know some of the students and helping them get started with their careers.

Are there any significant projects this season for you and your staff at Methodist University?

There is a lot of potential for improvements on the golf course. The first thing that can be done would be a tee leveling and enlarging project. Long term plans would include irrigation upgrades and a potential greens renovation.

What advice would you give someone looking to get into the agronomy side of the golf industry, knowing what you know?

I’ve always encouraged people in the golf industry to go through a construction or renovation. I feel you can learn so much from this experience that it will help you be a better superintendent. Also you’ll never quit learning in this profession so be ready for continuing education.

What are your interests outside of the golf course?

I enjoy playing golf with my wife, travelling, and spending time with my family.

Farewell to the Fairways: Thanks, Gord - Longtime Greenkeeper Hangs Up His Spikes

When I found out Gord MacMillan, the longtime Superintendent at Rideau View Golf Club, was retiring, I was upset and surprised. I've worked part-time at Rideau View, and for the last 10 years, I've listened to Gord start out each morning with our assignments with his rye sense of humour and candour. How could Gord be retiring? I have always associated working at Rideau View Golf Club with working with Gord. How could this be happening?

A few weeks later, after absorbing the news, I sent Gord a text, wishing him all the best. That I would miss him and that I was happy he'd be able to actually do some fishing now. His response:

"I'll be 65, so I think it's time to enjoy the sunshine"

For 36 years, Gord has been at Rideau View, 34 of which has been spent as the Superintendent. When I asked Gord about what advice he would give someone looking to get into the agronomy side of the golf industry, knowing what he knows. His response was all Gord:

"I think the best advice I can give a young person is to ask themselves if they enjoy the outdoors, like the early morning and love the game of golf than you will never work a day in your life"

I loved talking to Gord each day working at Rideau View. An agronomist, scientist, and even a meteorologist rolled into one. Golf course superintendents are truly special people.

The next time you step onto a perfectly manicured course, take a moment to appreciate the unseen efforts of the golf course superintendent. Their dedication and expertise are what allow golfers of all levels to enjoy the game on a beautifully crafted stage.

Being able to laugh when someone quotes – for the 5,000th time – a line from “Caddyshack,” even though it’s the worst possible representation of our profession.
Forgiving the incredible stupidity, ignorance and selfishness of golfers. As evidence I offer: Unraked bunkers, unfixed ball marks, carts off paths, carts on tees, carts on greens, multiple divots, an aversion to filling those divots, leaving broken tees strewn over tee boxes, dragging their cleats across greens, driving over (or kicking and even club-smashing) sprinkler heads, pulling out plantings, breaking tree limbs, running over bunker rakes (as well as “No Carts” signs and ropes), using the course as a garbage can, and thinking that we’re nothing but overpaid lawn mowers.
Listening – and smiling – while someone suggests a better way to do anything connected with course maintenance.
Putting in hours of study, going to seminars, meeting with sales reps, sitting in board meetings and volunteering at any level.
Remembering – at all times – that what we do is part of the great natural cycle, and taking extra caution not to harm the only environment we have.
Being dedicated to your families (despite the demands of the job) and introducing your children to the golf course environment.
Adhering to, recognizing and supporting the traditions of this wonderful game. We are the one industry that is not afraid to learn from those who have gone before us
Fearing nothing. The golf course superintendent is always ready and willing to do whatever it takes to get the job done.

Must Play Myrtle Beach Golf

Finally, I had the chance to play the Hackler Golf Course in the sprawling suburbs of Myrtle Beach recently on a family March break trip. Joey, the golf pro at Hackler, was gracious enough to set up my family and friends a couple of tee times during our stay.

If you're unfamiliar with the Hackler Golf Course, The Hackler Course at Coastal Carolina University is just a few kilometres inland from downtown Myrtle Beach. Initially designed by Gene Hamm, the course opened in 1968 (love it - the year I was born) as Quail Creek Golf Club. In 2011, Craig Schreiner completed a renovation project, and the course was renamed the Hackler Course at Coastal Carolina University after General James “Jim” Hackler, a longtime benefactor of the university who invented the golf package and was a long-time institution in the Grand Strand golf community.

I've been following them on Instagram over the years and have always been intrigued by the fact that CCU's PGA Golf Management program is one of only 18 universities accredited by the PGA of America.

We travelled from our little piece of paradise on Topsail Beach, North Carolina, to sunny South Carolina for our tee times. We didn't have time to take in CCU's practice area, but significant changes are coming to the course. Just see the end of my article to see what's up. I can see why students choose CCU for their PGA Golf Management program. Having these types of facilities so close to Coastal Carolina University's campus is a huge plus.

Considering the recent rain in the area, the course was in fantastic condition. The fairways were beautifully green, and with the dormant rough, the course looked terrific for our golf-starved crew.

These were just some of the comments from our group after the round at Hackler:

"Loved the golf carts, which made it easy with the GPS to figure out which club to hit, especially since I had never played here before."

"Playing my own tunes through the Bluetooth-enabled speakers in the cart was awesome."

"The generous fairways made for a great first round of the year."

"The Hackler helped my fear of the dogleg, lol. It had a lot!!!!"

"I loved how the course was tucked away into people's backyards. Not only did you have students drinking beer on their decks, but you crossed a street, and a kid was learning to ride his bike in his driveway."

Since the 2011 renovations, MiniVerde grass has been the putting surface, and all 18 greens were reshaped. These greens are definitely smaller in size, and most include some subtle undulations. Putting was faster than most of our group anticipated, but that was alright; it was just something you had to adjust to.

I'm not always a massive fan of dogleg golf holes. Hackler's numerous doglegs grew on me, which had something to do with playing from the bronze tees (Just under 6000 yards). There are four sets of tees, so the course will challenge everyone who plays.

Customer service was excellent, from paying for golf and grabbing a snack for everyone at the restaurant to the marshall and the cart girl, Shauna. Everyone was accommodating and willing to talk and make recommendations while on the golf course. I also got a great chance after the round to chat with the lad at the pro shop, who is in his final year of his PGA Golf Management Course.

The course was in great shape, from tee to green.

The pro shop at Hackler is unique. It is stocked with all things CCU. If you're looking for a souvenir of your round at Hackler, you'll be hard-pressed not to find something to take home. Of course, I had to get an official CCU divot repair tool and an excellent putter cover-inspired key chain.

Changes Underway at CCU

The big news for Coastal Carolina University's golf course includes redesigning the 9th hole, changing and improving the practice facilities, and constructing an 18,000-square-foot clubhouse that will serve as a learning facility.

The CCU PGA Academic Learning Center at the Hackler Course sounds like a needed update for a Myrtle Beach gem. Follow their Instagram feed for all the updates.

Jake Knapp Pro Golfer - The Ottawa Connection - Knapp Time

Before a week ago, most golf fans would have yet to learn who Jake Knapp was; for me, it was after round 3 of the Mexico Open at Vidanta that Jake discussed his Grandfather and his impact on his golf career and life. This guy is the real deal, with a sweet swing and a personality.

He managed to grind out a final round 71 and secured his first victory on the PGA Tour. Hard to believe he's only played 9 PGA Tour events in his golf career.

Perseverance is one word to describe Jake.

The Ottawa Connection

Jake Knapp's girlfriend is Makena White from Ottawa, Canada.

She flew in to see him compete in the final round of the Mexico Open.

Makena, 26, apparently works as a vascular surgery sales rep for LeMaitre, a medical device company, after graduating from McMaster University in 2019.

Knapp is in contention again this week after carding a second-round 66 to slide into a tie for 6th going into the weekend at the Cognizant Classic in the Palm Beaches. He's liking the Florida swing so far, having played the first two rounds with World number 2 Rory McIlroy.

He's obviously loving the support he's getting from his girlfriend's Ottawa family. Sporting "Knapp Time" t-shirts. How can you not route for this player?

“My dad and his buddies came down from Ottawa to watch Jake play,” said White, “and I did not know that these were going to be a thing, and I was looking for them in the crowd on 12, and then I saw a bunch of white T-shirts with beds on them. I couldn’t read it, and I was like, Oh, my, gosh, those are Knapp Time T-shirts, and so, that was them … pretty great.”

2023 Highlight - Front Row Seat To Rideau View's Billy Bunkers

The highlight of 2023 was having a front-row seat to Rideau View Golf Course's bunker renovations, from the vision of consulting architect Ian Andrew to the actual implementation by NMP Golf Construction. Seeing the transition daily as I changed holes for my 10th season at Rideau View was amazing. I also saw the hard work of Gord and Greg's staff in maintaining them through the Summer months.

Big Week for the CPKC Women’s Open at Shaugnessy Golf and Country Club

Sporting a new look, Brooke Henderson is poised to play her home open on the West Coast this week at Shaughnessy Golf and Country Club. Never one to waver to pressure, all eyes will be on her and the rest of the Canadian contingent this week. Always a great event on LPGA Tour the CPC put on a great event. The ladies are always very accommodating and gracious, as I witnessed a few years back in Ottawa when the event was hosted here at Ottawa Hunt Club. I know I even got to chat with Micheele Wie and others.

BROOKE HENDERSON ON PLAYING IN THE CPKC WOMEN’S OPEN…
“Yeah, this week is a big deal. It's the highlight of my year pretty much every year. It's exciting to get to be so close to so many fans, and regardless of where we are in the country, the fans and the crowds come out to watch. Just to feel that kind of love and support, it's really special. I try to do my best and try to sign a bunch of autographs and take pictures, but also trying to make sure that I give the right amount of time for myself to really prepare and get the right amount of rest so I can go out and perform on Thursday through Sunday. Winning this championship back in 2018 is definitely the highlight of my career, so I would love to be able to do that again someday.”

PAULA RETO REFLECTING ON LAST YEAR’S WIN AND DEFENDING HER TITLE…
“It was such a dream for me to win. Every tournament I go into I'm thinking about that moment, all the good stuff that happened and everything that worked out. We strive for that and I still strive for that every day. But just knowing I can do it and able to do it here in Canada was amazing. And then I know it's probably the hardest thing to defend your title, but I'm enjoying everybody here, the atmosphere, and just that stuff makes me a little bit more calmer, a little bit more easy and having to play. But such great vibes, and I'm so lucky to have won and I really want to do it again.
