  <p class="">Imagine this: You’re still stewing over an argument from three days ago, or you’re already anxious about a meeting next week. What does that get you? Stress, sleepless nights, and a distracted mind. But what if you gave yourself permission to let go of the past and focus only on the next 48 hours?.</p><p class="">Let me introduce you to a technique that I’ve been using recently. It’s called the ‘2-Day rule’. Now, it doesn’t work for every scenario, and I’ll cover that later. Essentially, it goes like this; if something happened more than 2 days ago, its relevance is diminishing. Dwelling on it only robs you of present energy and focus. Events more than 2 days ahead are likely too uncertain and possibly ambiguous to merit dealing with any stress today. I’ve been using this "rule" as a tool for mental clarity, reducing overthinking, and helping me to focus on what I feel is most important - the now.</p><p class=""><strong>Why Dwelling on the Past Hurts Well-Being</strong></p><p class="">Revisiting past events repeatedly creates mental clutter, leaving less capacity for present challenges. Stress hormones like cortisol increase when you dwell, leading to physical health issues such as higher blood pressure and poor sleep. Time spent rehashing old events could be used for productive or restorative activities, such as connecting with friends and loved ones or exercising.</p><p class=""><strong>Why Worrying About the Future is Counterproductive</strong></p><p class="">In most cases, much of what you’re worried about won’t happen or at the very least, it won’t unfold as you imagine. Anticipating problems too far ahead takes away energy and focus you need for immediate tasks. Success and well-being comes from building on actions in the now, not obsessing over hypothetical situations.</p><p class=""><strong>The Science of Living in the Present</strong></p><p class="">This all revolves around mindfulness. Something that will feature prominently in this community of ours. Staying present improves cognitive performance and decision-making. Studies show people are happier when their minds are focused on the present moment, regardless of the activity.   <p class=""><strong>Practical Applications of the "2-Day Rule"</strong></p><p class="">When dealing with past events, try to remember that forgiveness isn’t for others—it’s for you. Letting go doesn’t mean forgetting; it means prioritising your actions. Reflection is healthy, but set a time limit for analysing past mistakes- for example,&nbsp; “I’ll think about this for 30 minutes today, then move on.”</p><p class="">When addressing future concerns, try writing down your concerns and potential action steps—but only for things happening in the next 48 hours. If it’s beyond 2 days, focus instead on being ready when the time comes.</p><p class="">As I mentioned at the beginning of the article, the 2-Day Rule isn’t suitable for every scenario. It’s most effective for everyday worries and situations where dwelling on the past or fretting about distant events wastes mental energy. However, for significant milestones, safety concerns, long-term commitments, or emotional recovery, a broader perspective and planning approach are essential.</p><p class="">For example, if you’re working on a big project with deadlines, long-term planning and breaking down tasks over several days or weeks are crucial to meet the deadline. Ignoring the future beyond two days could lead to poor time management.</p><p class="">Another example<strong> </strong>is preparing for a major life event such as a wedding, relocating to a new city, or the birth of a child. These events require thoughtful preparation, often weeks or months in advance, to ensure everything runs smoothly.</p><p class=""><strong>Final Thoughts</strong></p><p class="">Men over 35 often juggle responsibilities—career, family, health—and are more susceptible to burnout. Emotional baggage and future anxieties sap energy that could be directed to fitness, hobbies, or relationships. Developing a "2-day mindset" trains your brain to stay sharp, adaptive, and optimistic as you age.</p><p class="">Why not try the "2-Day Rule" for a week and see if it improves your mood, focus, and productivity. For the next 7 days, when your mind wanders to events beyond 48 hours, gently redirect it back to the present. Maybe keep a journal of how you feel if that helps you to reflect and monitor progress.</p><p class="">Remember:</p><p class="">“You’re only here for a short visit.</p><p class="">Don’t hurry, don’t worry.</p><p class="">And be sure to smell the flowers along the way.”</p>

  <p class="">Cold water – thinking about this is enough to give you a shudder and want to think about something…. well warmer!</p><p class="">I have become more aware of cold-water therapy, and its benefits over the past few years.&nbsp; The first time I heard about this was when Wim Hoff “the iceman” was being interviewed on a TV show.&nbsp; If you haven’t heard of him (where have you been)? I would encourage you to Google the name.&nbsp; His story and journey are inspirational, and you can find out more about this revelation. </p><p class="">Nowadays, cold water swimming is becoming more and more popular.&nbsp; Where I live, it’s pretty cold, especially in the winter, but even then, donning a wet suit and jumping into a nearby reservoir, lake, or the sea can give you a few minutes of exhilaration and submerge you into the cold and along with it long-term health benefits.</p><p class="">Certainly, in my own experience, it is becoming more widespread as more and more people are catching onto this and recognising the benefits and enjoying the experience at the same time (yes, it can be enjoyable)!</p><p class=""><strong>What are the benefits?</strong></p><p class="">As men age, muscle recovery slows, and inflammation becomes a more significant issue, especially for those who stay active. Cold water therapy works by constricting blood vessels when the body is exposed to cold, reducing inflammation and helping muscles recover faster after exercise. It also reduces the buildup of lactic acid in muscles, a common cause of post-exercise soreness.</p><p class="">For men over 35 who might not recover as quickly as they did in their 20s, cold water immersion offers a natural way to speed up recovery times and maintain an active lifestyle. Whether you’re training for a marathon, playing weekend football, or simply exercising to stay in shape, cold water therapy can help your body bounce back faster.</p><p class="">Circulation tends to decline as men age, which can contribute to problems like high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, and decreased energy levels.&nbsp; Cold water therapy stimulates circulation by forcing the body to work harder to maintain its core temperature. The cold water causes blood vessels to constrict, and when you warm up afterward, the blood vessels dilate. This process enhances blood flow, delivering oxygen and nutrients to muscles and vital organs more efficiently.</p><p class="">Improved circulation supports overall cardiovascular health, which is crucial for men over 35. By voluntarily subjecting yourself to the shock of cold water, you build mental resilience, which can carry over into other areas of life. Whether it’s handling stress at work or dealing with personal challenges, regularly practicing cold exposure helps condition the mind to stay calm and composed under pressure.</p><p class="">Also, testosterone levels naturally decline as men age, typically starting around the age of 30. This drop in testosterone can lead to decreased muscle mass, lower energy levels, and a reduced sex drive. Some studies suggest that cold exposure can positively affect hormone production, including testosterone. While more research is needed in this area, there’s evidence to suggest that cold water therapy may help maintain healthier testosterone levels by reducing inflammation and promoting better metabolic function.</p><p class="">Cold water immersion boosts metabolism by forcing the body to work harder to maintain its core temperature. This can result in increased calorie burning, which is beneficial for men looking to maintain a healthy weight or reduce body fat, especially as metabolism tends to slow with age.</p><p class="">As we age, the immune system tends to weaken, making us more susceptible to illnesses. Cold water therapy has been shown to enhance the immune system by increasing the production of white blood cells, which are essential for fighting infections. Regular cold exposure may help men over 35 maintain a robust immune system, reducing the frequency of common illnesses like colds and the flu.</p><p class=""><strong>Where do we find the cold water?</strong></p><p class="">For the average man over 35, cold water therapy may seem daunting at first, but it’s easier to incorporate into your daily schedule than you might think.</p><p class="">The simplest and most accessible form of cold-water therapy is a cold shower. Start by taking your usual warm shower, then gradually reduce the temperature to cold for the last 30 seconds to a minute. As your tolerance improves, try extending the cold phase to two or three minutes. Over time, you’ll find it easier to handle the discomfort, and the benefits will begin to accumulate.</p><p class="">Cold showers are easy to fit into a busy morning or evening routine and don’t require any special equipment. The key is consistency—try to make it a daily habit.</p><p class="">If you’re looking for a more intense form of cold-water therapy, ice baths are an excellent option. These are especially useful after strenuous exercise. To create an ice bath at home, fill a bathtub with cold water and add a few bags of ice until the temperature reaches about 10–15°C (50–59°F).   <p class="">Fasting is an ancient practice going back to the days of the bible and beyond. A quick google search will reference the ancient Greeks and Jesus Christ as disciples of this ritual.</p><p class="">These days it has become more popular with TV documentaries, magazine articles, YouTube videos and an avalanche of information on the internet around this fascinating topic.</p><p class="">Below, we will highlight the benefits and demonstrate ways that you can get involved with this practice in a simple, yet affective way.</p><p class="">Once you see the benefits you can delve deeper and perhaps apply it as part of your daily routine.</p><p class="">Personally, I have practiced it and still do to this day. Back in 2013 I was married to my current wife (yes I/she is still there!). Prior to the wedding I was around 28 pounds overweight. Around that time, I watched a fascinating documentary on fasting by the late TV doctor Michael Mosley (I would recommend watching) where he applied the 5:2 fasting method (see below). It made sense to me, and I applied this. Long story short – I did lose the 28 pounds and more before the big day and was in the best fighting shape of my life – and it was fairly easy.</p><p class="">Throughout the decades we have been subjected to a myriad of diet fads from the Atkins diet, to the master cleanse, to the special K diet! I think we can all agree that diets can work short term, but are not overly healthy and do not provide long lasting results.</p><p class="">Fasting provides health benefits backed by science and is easy to do. Some of the examples below are easily done and you may already be doing them, without knowing!</p><p class=""><strong>The main Benefits of Fasting for Men Over 35</strong></p><p class="">As we age, our metabolism slows down, making it harder to burn fat, especially around the belly. For men over 35, this can be a common problem. Fasting can help by pushing the body to use stored fat for energy instead of glucose, a process called ketosis, which promotes fat loss. Fasting also increases human growth hormone (HGH) levels, which are important for maintaining muscle, burning fat, and recovering after exercise. Since HGH naturally decreases with age, fasting helps keep these levels up, making it easier for men to lose fat and maintain muscle.</p><p class="">Fasting also improves insulin sensitivity, which is important for controlling weight and preventing Type 2 diabetes. As men get older, they may become more prone to insulin resistance, especially if they carry extra weight around the belly.
