This intrigued me as it isn’t something I’ve come across before and I’m always on the lookout for ways to get some extra points to save money at the supermarket. The Tesco scheme’s also the program I use the most, as I shop more at Tesco than Sainsbury’s, Asda or Morrisons. This means I rack up more Clubcard than Morrisons More or Nectar points as a rule. So, I had a look into it to see what Tescoviews is all about.

What is Tesco Views?

Tesco Views is Tesco’s online customer satisfaction survey portal. Basically, they want to hear your feedback to improve in-store customer service and the platform their using is Tesco Views. But as with all customer satisfaction surveys, who can really be bothered to fill these in. Usually, none of us unless there’s some kind of incentive. That’s why you get the chance to win a £1000 Tesco Gift Card and 25 bonus Clubcard points just for taking part.

Who’s Eligible to Take Part in Tesco Views?

To take part and get entered into the prize draw (plus get your Clubcard points) you just need to be a UK resident over the age of 18. Unfortunately, if you work for Tesco you can’t take part as the offer isn’t open to Tesco employees or InMoment Inc (the company that runs the survey) employees.

How Does TescoViews Work?

It’s pretty simple. You just visit the Tesco Views website –  to get started. Fill out a few questions and earn you 25 Clubcard points and entry into the prize draw. Here’s a step-by-step run through.

First off though, you just need to enter your store number using the 4-digit code on one of your receipts

How do you Find the 4 Digit Store Code?

You can find the code at the bottom of your in-store shopping receipt, on your Tesco café receipt or using one the feedback forms with a QR code that you’ll find in-store by the tills (see below).

Once you’ve done this it’s time to get into the questions and let Tesco know how they did on your visit.

The first screen asks you what part of the store you want to give feedback on – the main store or the Tesco Café.

What Type of Information to you Need to Provide?

It’s fairly standard stuff in the survey, to be honest, so it only takes a few minutes to complete the survey.

You’ll need to provide details about:

• The date and time of your visit
• What type of shop you did
• What type of checkout you used
• Based on this visit how likely are you to recommend this Tesco store, along with some extra comments in this section to give more depth to your rating. You can provide a video to give your feedback if you like or just type in the comments box.

Just a quick note, if you give a poor rating (as I did in this case) you’ll be asked if you want somebody from Tesco to contact you to discuss in more detail. You can say no to this if you just want your Clubcard points unless you feel really strongly about something and want to complain. If you do want to raise a complaint though this is probably a pretty good way to do it.

You’ll then be asked about some more questions about your visit such as:

• How impressed you were with the staff
• What the car parking was like
• How clean and tidy the store was
• How easy it was to find the items you were looking for and whether you were happy with their product range
• How happy you were with their pricing
• Whether you were happy with your wait at the checkout
• How you’d rate your experience overall, and
• Whether or not you were offered a Blue token for the community fund – unfortunately again, I didn’t get one of these on my visit, but I am a fan of them. I really like the idea of choosing where to donate and what to support in the local community. My little boy likes putting the tokens in the boxes too

Once you’ve answered these questions, you’ll get the screen below asking if you want to answer some more. I did, as I just wanted to see how many more there were.

When I did this there was just one extra question here asking if I visited anywhere else such as the petrol station, pharmacy, F&F clothing section or the Customer Service Desk.

You’ll then be asked some questions about your personal circumstances. These are just questions such as your age group, household set up, your employment status and household income.

However, if you’re not happy sharing this information you can just tick the “Prefer not to answer” box on these questions.

Then, all you have to do is fill out your name, phone number (not required), email address (required) and Clubcard number. This gets you 25 Clubcard points and entry into the draw for a £1000 Tesco Gift Card.

How Long Does it Run For?

The Tescoviews scheme is running until 1st September 2020, so you’ve got plenty of time to claim some extra Clubcard points.

How Many Clubcard Points Can You Earn?

You can collect 25 points each month and be entered into the prize draw once a month per household. So, in theory, you can collect 300 extra Clubcard points a year if you take part every month. This means you can earn a total of 350 Clubcard Points if you start now and enter every month up until the offer closes on the 1st September 2020.

How Does the Prize Draw for the £1000 Tesco Gift Card Work?

There is only one £1000 Gift Card up for grabs each month, and the prize draw takes place on the first Tuesday of each calendar month. Winners are selected at random from all entries received before the 1st of each month. Any entries received after that automatically get entered into the next prize draw.

How Do You Find out if You’ve Won?

If your one of the lucky winners of the £1000 Gift Card you’ll be contacted either by phone or email the day after the prize draw. Then you can do your happy dance! Your gift card will then be sent to you by recorded delivery.

When Do You Get Your Clubcard Points?

This is something to be aware of. The Clubcard points aren’t credited to your account immediately so if you don’t see them in your Clubcard balance straight away, don’t panic. The Clubcard points get credited to your account within 40 days of completing the survey. They’ll be displayed in your next quarterly statement in the “Other Points” section.

What Else is in the Terms and Conditions that You Need to Know?

The Terms and Conditions document is quite lengthy but there are a few other things you need to be aware of in case you’re not comfortable with them.

“Winners may be asked to partake in publicity surrounding their win though this is not compulsory.”

This isn’t a particular issue as it isn’t compulsory, so if you’re not one for the limelight don’t worry.

However, you need to be aware of the next clause I spotted in there:

“Winners agree to their names and photographs being used for promotional purposes. Copyright in all material submitted as entries rests with the promoter.”

There’s no reference to this not being compulsory. So, I read this as if you win your name will be going on the website in the winner’s section. So again, if you’re not comfortable with this it’s something to bear in mind.

“If the Promoter is unable to contact a winner or the prize is not collected, an alternative winner may be drawn at random and the Promoter shall have no liability to the original winner.”

So, make sure if you give your phone details you check any voicemails, and make sure you check your emails too.

Final Thoughts

So, is TescoViews worth taking part in? Well, put simply yes, the survey itself only takes a few minutes and you’ll be in with a shot at winning £1000 gift card. It’s probably very unlikely you’ll win but as far as prize draws go you don’t have to put a lot of effort to enter.

You also get the bonus of 25 Clubcard points each time you enter but this works out at roughly 25p, so it isn’t a huge incentive on its own. If you’re looking for better ways to make money using surveys then something like PopulusLive is a better bet. But, if you want to give some feedback on your local Tesco then you might as well, and you might even get some improvements to the store if you’re lucky!

What is WhatUsersDo?

WhatUsersDo is a website testing site where you can earn some extra cash reviewing websites and apps.  This is known as User Testing or Usability Testing.

It basically allows the website owner to trial a prototype website with real users and test it for usability and bugs. This is where we come in. You can sign up as a website tester and get paid for reviewing websites as they’re sent through to you.

Unlike most website testing sites, What Users Do is a UK based site rather than US-based. It was recently acquired by US company UserZoom so by registering with WhatUsersDo you can also access website tests from UserZoom and Itellizoom.

Is WhatUsersDo a Legitimate Way to Make Money or Just a Scam?

I can confirm that What Users Do is definitely a legitimate site and not a scam. I’ve taken several website tests with them and always received payment once the tests have been reviewed and approved. So, it’s a genuine way to make some extra money on the side.

How Can You Make Money with WhatUsersDo?

You can make money with the site by signing up as a website tester. You will then periodically receive tests via email. When you successfully complete them and upload the finished test, once it’s been reviewed and approved, you’ll be paid via PayPal.

What Equipment Do You Need to Get Started?

It’s pretty easy to get started. In fact, it was the first website testing company I ever signed up with, mainly because I live in the UK and it was a UK based site. All you need is a fast internet connection and a decent laptop with a microphone. Most laptops have built-in microphones these days but if yours doesn’t you can pick up one like this really cheaply on Amazon.

WhatUsersDo Equipment Requirements

• Broadband connection
• Computer (PC, Netbook or Mac) with a recent browser installed (see list below) and minimum 1GB RAM
• Microphone (built-in or separate) to record your thoughts as you go
• A PayPal account to receive payment.

Supported Browsers

• Internet Explorer 7 and above
• Firefox 2 and above
• Safari 3 and above
• Google Chrome

To get started all you need to do is

1. Sign Up and complete a short application. This is just a short questionnaire about yourself that should only take 5-10 minutes to complete.

2. Download the Screen Recorder. This allows them to record you as you speak your thoughts as you try out websites.

3. Take a Practice Test. This is only around 3 minutes long, but it confirms you’re screen recorder works, microphone works and that you can follow simple instructions.

Once approved, you’ll start receiving tests so you can get paid for giving your opinion.

Another nice feature in the site is that you can specify when you’re available to take tests. This seems to be unique to What Users Do, as I haven’t seen this available on any other sites.  You can fill this out in the profile section.

You can also specify which devices you have too so you can take tests on your mobile phone or tablet too.

Is WhatUsersDo Worth Signing Up for?

If you’re looking for a way to earn a little bit of extra cash, then yes. Please note, testing websites using sites such as this and UserTesting won’t provide you will a full-time income. You simply won’t receive enough tests each month. But if you’re looking for another income stream to earn some extra cash then website testing is a great way to do this.

I tend to use sites like this to supplement my freelance income.  I combine it with other ways to make money from home, such as well-paid survey sites like PopulusLive and Prolific Surveys.

Who Can Sign Up?

Anyone who speaks English can apply to be a tester. As long as you’re comfortable speaking your thoughts out loud and having your computer screen recorded, you’re good to go.

How Much Does WhatUsersDo Pay?

What Users Do pays £5 per successfully completed test. Tests usually last 20 minutes at the most and I’ve found I often complete them quicker than this. This gives you an hourly rate of £15 per hour which isn’t too shabby.

However, it doesn’t pay quite as well as a lot of the other website testing companies out there. The going rate for the US-based sites tends to be $10 per 20-minute.

How Do the Payments Work?

Payments are processed on the 25th of each month (excluding UK weekends and public holidays) for any tests in the previous month.

For example: for any test completed and accepted in April, they will pay into your PayPal account on 25th May. To be honest these payment terms aren’t fantastic when compared with other website testing companies. UserTesting, for example, pays out 7 days after completion of a test. This is obviously much better as you’re not waiting around for your cash for too long.

How Many Tests Can You Expect Each Month?

According to their website, you can expect to receive around 4 tests per month. But this will vary depending on your demographics and quality score as you complete more tests.

For example, I tend to get anywhere between 4 and 7 per month. To give you an idea I received:

7 tests in March,

5 in February,

7 in January,

4 in December,

5 in November,

6 in October

6 in September.

What are the Alternatives?

There are loads of other website testing companies to try out. Four that I’ve personally used are UserTesting, TryMyUI, TestingTime and Userlytics. But if you want to find more check out my post on website testing companies.

What’s Good

• WhatUsersDo offers a stress-free and fun way to make some extra cash from home
• You don’t need to spend any money up front to start earning. You just need a laptop, an internet connection and to register
• The tests tend to be quite interesting and fun
• You rarely get screened, which is a big positive for the site. You receive less emails with tests than you do with UserTesting for example. But generally, when you receive a test, you’re eligible to take it. UserTesting, on the other hand, sends you stacks of tests. But I’ve found you get screened out of the vast majority of them, which gets very annoying. So, if you get annoyed with being screened out then WhatUsersDo is a great choice, even if the pay is slightly lower than with other sites.
• The refer a friend option is also good as this isn’t offered by a lot of other sites. This is my referral link if you want to sign up.

What’s Bad

• The pay rate is a definite negative. Most website testing sites pay $10 per test which works out at around £8, so What Users Do pays below the market rate.
• Payment terms aren’t the best either. You have to wait until the 25th of the following month to receive your payment, which is another negative for WhatUsersDo
• You don’t receive many tests. This is a common complaint with all website testing companies. So, to make a decent side income with website testing you really need to sign up with as many as you can. This way you should get a reasonable number of tests each month to maximise your earnings.

I can confirm that UserTesting.com is 100% legitimate. I’ve taken several website tests on the platform and can confirm that I’ve always been paid on time. I also found the process to be very smooth and fair.

What the Heck is Usability Testing Anyway?

Website Usability Testing is a process used by companies to test that their websites work correctly. Once a website has been built it needs to be tested before it’s launched. Part of this is getting real people to try the site out – usability testing.

Sites like UserTesting existing to farm this work out to Website Testers. And the best part is – anyone can sign up to become a website tester.

How Does User Testing Work?

You simply sign up with UserTesting, complete a trial website test and once approved you’re good to go. You’ll then start receiving website tests by email. When you received tests, you can log into your account and complete it. Once approved, you get paid – easy!

What Equipment Do I need?

You will need some equipment to be a website tester. You’ll need a laptop (obviously), a fast internet connection and either a speaker built into your laptop or a microphone if not.

You’ll also need to download and install the UserTesting screen recorder. Once you’ve done this, you’ll then need to complete a practice test that has to be approved.

The minimum equipment requirements are:

PC

• Operating system: Windows 7, 8, or 10.
• Memory: At least 1 GB of total RAM and 0.5 GB of available RAM.
• Free disk space: At least 7 GB of free disk space.
• Browser: Internet Explorer 11, Firefox 45, or Chrome 49.

Mac

• Operating system: OS X 10.7 or higher
• Memory: At least 1 GB of total RAM and 0.5 GB of available RAM.
• Free disk space: At least 5 GB of free disk space.
• Browser: Internet Explorer 11, Firefox 45, or Chrome 49.

How Much Does UserTesting Pay?

UserTesting usually pays $10 for a 20-minute website test (around £7.50 inf you’re in the UK like me). My experience though is that the tests often take slightly less than 20 minutes so this gives you a great hourly rate of around $30 per hour (£22.50).

However, if you manage to land a face to face skype session these pay much more generously. The one I did, paid me $60 (around £45) for an hours skype call.

Payment is via PayPal which you receive 7 days after completion of the website or app test. This allows UserTesting time to review the video upload for quality to confirm payment. To be honest these terms are pretty good as another site I use (WhatUsersDo) usually takes over a month to pay out. So, this is a big thumbs up for UserTesting in my humble opinion.

How Much Can You Earn with UserTesting?

You’re not going to get rich and retire early from UserTesting I’m afraid. But you will get a decent number of tests to complete each month. UserTesting states you should expect to get around 4 tests a month which would be $40 from this site alone.

Plus there’s the potential to earn more if you get invited to a Skype call. You’ll need to have a good tester rating to qualify for these though.

If website testing is a way you’d like to make money I’d suggest signing up with several sites to get as many tests as you can each month. You can have a look at my post that lists 14 website testing sites to sign up with.

UserTesting and Taxes

UserTesting quotes in their FAQ section that they don’t withhold any taxes from payments. That means you’re responsible for declaring your earnings and paying any owed taxes to HMRC if you’re in the UK (or the equivalent if you’re based outside the UK).

Is UserTesting Worth Signing Up for?

In short – yes! It’s well paid and fun. $10 which works out at around £7.50 for a 20-minute website test is worthwhile in my opinion. That gives you an hourly rate of $30 or £22.50 per hour which is pretty good going for something literally anyone can sign up for.

It beats the hell out of the rates you’ll get on survey sites by a significant margin – but it is a lot more involved as you’ll be speaking out loud. I guess not everyone will be comfortable with that.

What Are UserTesting Website Tests Like?

Tests are sent out via email and can be accessed anytime by logging onto your dashboard.

The tests themselves vary depending on the client and specific website. It can be anything from being asked to search for specific information on a topic, to trying to complete a transaction on an e-commerce store. There are also opportunities every now and again to complete Skype focus groups direct with a client. These are great as they tend to pay-out at around $60 per hour – awesome!

What if I run into problems with a website test?

If you have a problem during a website test, UserTesting has a really good support set up.  If you encounter a problem during the test though, you can simply click on the Help button below the task section of the test or the “?” symbol on the screen recorder – this will pause the test and allow you to report the problem.

The FAQ section of the website is very in-depth with a wide range of videos and guides to help you answer any questions you have or troubleshoot any issues. If you can’t find the answer you can email the UserTesting support team.

Is there a UserTesting App Available?

Yes, there is an app available too. So, you need to install the app to complete the mobile app tests that come through. You’ll still get told about these by email but will have to complete them using the app on your phone.

How to be Better Website Tester and Get Better Ratings

Getting good ratings is in your interest with UserTesting. The better your rating as a website tester, the more tests you’ll receive – simple. So, if you want to earn a decent amount return good tests! Luckily the website gives you plenty of helpful tips and videos to deliver good quality website tests. Check out the video below as an example – tips to become a good website tester.

My main pointers are:

• Make sure your audio is working by checking the bars are moving as you speak.
• Speak your thoughts out load clearly during the test. This will probably feel a bit weird at first, but you’ll get used to it pretty quickly.
• Make sure you’re somewhere quiet, where you won’t be interrupted. (My cat has a habit of trying to jump onto my laptop and meowing during a test…. ????)

Make sure you read the tasks carefully and understand them. Then stick to the set of tasks you’re instructed to do. This is something I’m a bit guilty of messing up. I have a natural tendency to go off script and start clicking areas I shouldn’t. I’m naturally impatient and like to explore websites so if you are too, you’ll have to resist the natural urge to just start clicking around and stick to what you’ve been asked to do!!

Who Can Sign Up with UserTesting? accepts participants from all over the world but pays out in US dollars via PayPal.

Pro’s

• At $10 for 20 minutes work UserTesting is very well paid, especially when you compare it to similar side hustles like Survey sites such as PopulusLive and Prolific Surveys, or apps like Streetbees.
• Fun and interesting. Clicking around on a website is usually pretty interesting and the time passes quickly. It’s also quite fun to get to see new sites before they launch and also see some of the glitches that crop up in the design process.

• Payment terms are good from UserTesting – you receive payment within a week so aren’t waiting for ages to get your money
• There is a scoring system, so if you give good feedback, you get a good rating. Obviously, this is only a positive if you provide good feedback, but if you want to earn more on UserTesting this is something you need to focus on. Better ratings, equals more tests and better-paid tests such as skype focus groups.

Cons

• The upload process after a test can sometimes be a bit slow which is frustrating, especially if you waiting to get on with something else.

• Screening out can be a bit of a pain. UserTesting does tend to screen you out a lot more than some other sites I’m signed up with which gets annoying pretty quickly. I also get the same test sent to me again after being screened out once, which makes no sense. So, this an area that could certainly be improved.
• Limited earning potential. Due to the small number of tests you’re likely to quality for you’re not going to make bucket loads of cash on UserTesting.  But, this is the same for all website testing sites unfortunately.

Is PopulusLive Legit?

Yes, Populus Live is 100% legit and a lot less shady than several of the other survey sites out there. In fact, I only use 2 survey sites (Populus and Prolific Academic), and one Survey App – Streetbees. I just found most other survey sites a bit of a waste of time and effort due to pitiful pay rates.

How Do Populus Surveys Work?

Once you’ve signed up and filled out your profile, you’ll start receiving surveys by email. You then just click the link and answer the questions.

You do get screened out though occasionally, so this is something to bear in mind. This really annoyed me to start with as I got screened out of the first few surveys about 10% into them. This was really frustrating.

However, this seems to happen less and less the longer I’m with them which has meant I’ve grown to be a big fan of PopulusLive. Plus, having signed up to a number of survey companies, all of them (apart from one) screen candidates out. A lot more than Populus I might add, and offer much lower rates of pay to boot (ahem Swagbucks…)

Is Populus Live Worth Signing Up for?

Put simply, Yes!!! Populus Live is the highest paying survey site I’ve found. To quote the website it pays you 1 per 5 minutes of your time. Work that out as an hourly rate and you get a rate of 12 per hour for giving your opinion on interesting topics.

That’s why it’s my favourite survey site by some margin – despite getting annoyed with it in my first few weeks.

The rate of pay crushes every other survey site going. Prolific Academic is often touted as the best paying site in the UK. But, their pay rates start at around 5 per hour upwards.

But, the bulk of the surveys are around the 5 minimum unfortunately. You just get a lot more of them and never get screened out which is a plus for Prolific Surveys.

But, for 12 an hour for a survey, I’m happy to get screened out occasionally. I probably get screened out about once in every 5 surveys now which I’m happy to live with.

On the plus side when you get screened out, you do get entered into their monthly prize draw with a chance to win 250. That being said, I’ve never won so can’t validate this!

Populus Surveys Sign Up Process

The sign-up process is really quick and simple. You simply click on this link and follow the on-screen instructions. By completing the registration process you are “opting-in” to receive surveys by email. Congratulations, you’re now a fully-fledged member of the Populus Live Community.

What are PopulusLive Surveys Like?

I’ve taken loads of different types of surveys on PopulusLive and have to say they’re usually interesting and varied.

The surveys are sent straight to your email, so you just click the link and start. Most of them can be completed on either your smartphone, tablet or laptop. But, you do get the occasional survey that you can only complete on a laptop.

I’ve taken surveys on all kinds of topics such as political views, how I voted at elections, who I use for my utility bills, giving my feedback on new packaging for big brands, as well as some rather interesting moral question-based surveys.

As I mentioned earlier, Populus pays at a rate of £1 per 5 minutes of your time. Due to this, all the surveys either pay £1 for a 5-minute survey, £2 for a 10-minute survey of £3 for a 15-minute survey. I’ve even had a couple that have paid £4 for 20 minutes too.

How Many Surveys Do You Get?

This can vary hugely depending on your demographics to give you an idea over the last month I’ve had 15 surveys sent to me. The total value of these surveys was £27 so that’s pretty good I think for one site.

On that basis, if I had completed everything they sent me, I could have hit the £50 cashout amount in 2 months.

How Much Can You Earn with Populus Live?

The pay rate is good, but the surveys can be a bit sporadic, so Populus Live is a bit of a slow burn. You’re not going to be making hundreds of pounds every month with Populus.

I signed up October and I’ve recently had my first pay-out. I could have reached the £50 threshold sooner but there have been a fair few surveys I didn’t get around to completing due to being busy with other things.

How Do You Get Paid?

You’ll like this… They pay by cheque which gets sent out about a week after you hit the £50 threshold.

This is a little bit old school to say the least for my liking. But, when you’re getting £12/hour for surveys, I’m happy to take it… It would be great though if they offered the option to get paid straight into your bank account or via PayPal. I mean, who the hell uses cheques these days anyway?!!

Who can Sign Up with Populus Live?

Populus Live is open to all UK residents over the age of 16 (providing you don’t work for or are affiliated with Populus.

Pros

• First and foremost, the pay rate on Populus Live is pretty unbeatable. No other survey site really comes close to the hourly rate offered by Populus.
• The surveys are usually interesting and varied so they’re quite fun to complete.
• Receiving the surveys by email is actually a positive for Populus Live. As they’re relatively infrequent it prompts you to complete them rather than having to log on every day as you do with Prolific Academic. You don’t get bombarded as you do with a lot of other survey sites either. Some of the survey sites that pay you a very low rate send tons of emails which gets annoying very quickly. That’s why I stopped using most of them…

Cons

• As I mentioned earlier, while the surveys pay well, you don’t get huge amounts of them. They tend to pretty sporadic so if you’re wanting a site that gives you huge volumes of surveys to complete then Populus isn’t it. I’ve got very limited spare time so getting relatively infrequent surveys that pay well suits me down to the ground.
• Screening out can be frustrating. This was especially the case when I first signed up as it felt like I got screened out of nearly all of the first 5 I was sent. This has improved massively over time though and it’s quite rare for me to get screened out now. This could still be improved though, by increasing the amount of information they store on your profile. So, if anyone at Populus Live is reading this, there’s some feedback for you!
• Payment threshold and method of Payment. The £50 payment threshold is pretty rubbish to be honest and I can imagine a lot of people lose interest and never hit it. Getting paid by cheque is also a bit of a pain as I could really do without having to go and pay it into the bank as I do pretty much everything online these days.

My Verdict

Populus Live is a winner in my eyes. If you’re looking for a great paying survey site that won’t scam you and waste your time, then look no further. It has the highest rate of pay of all the survey sites I’ve tried in the UK and I plan to keep using Populus Live.

It’s also one of the best ways to make extra money in the UK. Granted you aren’t going to make a ton of cash but when you’re combining it with other well-paid side hustles like website testing or survey apps then it’s a great way to make some hassle-free extra cash.

I prefer it to Prolific Academic (my second favourite survey site) as the pay is better. I also find myself regularly completing Populus surveys when I get them which differs to website tests from the likes of UserTesting and WhatUsersDo (I have to be in the right mood to speak into my laptop for a website test!).

If it wasn’t for the high cashout limit of £50, the screening out and payment by cheque I’d give it 5 stars. As it stands though, it gets a well-deserved:

What are Nectar Points Worth?

Basically, 1 Nectar point is worth 0.5p, so to save up a £1 worth of Nectar points you’ll need 200 of them. A few more Nectar points values are below.

• 100 Nectar points are worth 50p
• 500 Nectar points are worth £2.50
• 1000 Nectar points are worth £5
• 5000 Nectar points are worth  £25
• 10000 Nectar points are worth £50

But, to make it easier if your maths is a little rusty, I’ve built the handy Nectar points calculator below. Let’s face it, who has nice round numbers of loyalty points?? So, you can work out what your Nectar points are worth in good old English pounds and pence.

What is the Nectar Card Scheme?

Nectar is a loyalty card scheme that allows you to collect points at various partner retailers such as Sainsbury’s, eBay and Debenhams. Now if you’re like me you’ve probably already got a Nectar card, especially if you shop at Sainsbury’s.

Sainsbury’s has historically partnered with Nectar rather than having their own loyalty scheme, like Tesco Clubcard or Morrisons More. However, in early 2018 after 15 years of collaboration, Sainsbury’s bought the Nectar scheme.

How to Register for the Nectar Scheme

If you haven’t already got a Nectar card the quickest way to start collecting points is to register online via the Nectar website. You can then use your card number for your next online shop. Or you can pick up in-store at Sainsbury’s.

You can also join by downloading the New Nectar App on Google Play or iTunes.

How Many Nectar Points Do You Get and Where to Collect Them

I mainly collect Nectar Points with Sainsbury’s shopping and this is the store they’re most associated with. The standard rate you get when shopping there is 1 Nectar point for every £1 you spend. This means, in reality, you’re getting 0.5p back for every £1 you spend in-store.

But you can collect Nectar points at loads of other places – 392 brands in fact. And some of them, offer more points per pound.

You do have to be a bit careful though, as to get points at a lot of the partners you need to click through from the Nectar website. This means you might be better off going through a cashback site. Find out more in my guide to Collecting Nectar Points.

But let’s take a look at a few examples.

Sainsbury’s

Collect 1 point per £1 spend in Sainsbury’s. They do sometimes run offers though where you can collect more. For example, in the summer they ran a promotion where you can collect 5 X Nectar Points on fresh meat, fish, fruit and veg.

Esso Petrol Stations

You can earn Nectar points at Esso fuel stations. Previously, Nectar partnered with BP but from 1st June 2019 Esso became the fuel partner for the Nectar Scheme.

You can get 1 point per litre of fuel and 2p for every £1 spent in-store or when you get your car washed.

There are also periodic bonus offers like the one below for 250 points when you fill-up.

eBay

Earn 1 point per £1 spent by linking your eBay account with your Nectar account*. This is one of the easiest ways to collect them if you shop on eBay. You literally have to do nothing once you’ve linked your account. No pesky card swiping!

Expedia

Collect up to 2 Nectar Points per £1 spend. You only get the headline rate of 2 points per £1 on package, hotel, car or activity bookings. If you’re just booking flights through Expedia, you’ll only get 1 Nectar Point for every pound.

But to earn them at you have to access the Expedia site by first going through the Nectar website, as you would with traditional cashback sites such as Quidco* and TopCashback*.

This means that you need to check if you’ll get a better deal via one of the cashback sites, so it’s always best to check first.

ASOS

If you a fashion fanatic, then you’ll be pleased to know you can earn triple points when you shop at asos.com and get 6 points for every £1 you spend.

This works out at 3% in Nectar Points, which sounds good. But, you need to access through the Nectar site again so make sure you compare it with the offers on the main cashback sites to check for the best deal.

For example, with TopCashback*, if you’re a new customer you can get a whopping 10%. Existing customers get 3% which is the same as the Nectar deal.

So, make sure you always check to see if you can get a deal on the cashback sites before opting to collect Nectar Points.

Credit Cards

You can earn more points with a couple of different credit cards.

Firstly you’ve got the Sainsbury’s Bank Dual Offer Credit Card (we have this one).

This card lets you collect up to 7,500 bonus Nectar points in your first two months. You can earn 750 bonus points every time you spend £35 or more in Sainsbury’s with your card. You can do this up to a maximum of 10 times in your first 2 months.

So, that would be 7,500 points back for a £350 spend over two months.

You’ll also get bonus Nectar Points on all your other shopping.

• 2 Nectar Points for every £1 spent at Sainsbury’s (shopping or fuel)and
• 1 point for every £5 spent anywhere else.

This is a bit measly though! So if you’ve got another cashback credit card, you’re probably better off using this everywhere else.

The card does come with the added bonus of 0% interest on purchases or balance transfers for the first 27 months though.

You’ll have a 3% fee or balance transfers though so keep this in mind. And remember to make sure you pay off the balance or switch at the end of the interest-free term. Or you’ll get stung with an interest rate of 20.9% APR….

If you’re looking for a bigger Nectar Points boost, the American Express® Nectar Credit Card could be worth a look.

If you spend £2,000 in the first 3 months you get a bonus of 20,000 Nectar Points (£100 value).

Plus, you get 2 points per £1 spent on your card on top of your usual points.

The card usually has a £25 a year annual fee, but this is waived for the first year. So, make sure you cancel after the first year as the points you’ll get probably don’t justify the fee.

Browser Extension / Nectar Toolbar

The Nectar Toolbar is worth installing as you get 100 Nectar Points (50p) just for adding it to your browser. Then if you use it as your search engine you can collect up to 200 points a month just for using it as your search engine.

You get 1 point for every 2 searches you make. It’s powered by Yahoo though, so you’ll have to weigh up the results are as good as you usually get if you use Google.

The toolbar also lets you know when you’re on a website where you can collect points. The toolbar works with either Chrome, Firefox or Safari browsers.

Daily Mail MyMail Rewards

If you’re a Daily Mail reader, then you can collect points by signing up with the MyMail Rewards scheme. Basically, every day a 12 digit unique number is printed on the back of the Daily Mail.

To collect your points all you need to do link your Nectar card to your MyMail account. Then enter this on the myMail website to collect Nectar points.

On Mondays to Fridays, you collect 5 Nectar points each day

Saturdays you get 10 Nectar points,

And Sundays you get 15 Nectar points.

You also get 30 bonus points for collecting all codes for a week.

This means you can collect a maximum of 80 Points a week. Roughly 40p worth of Nectar points

How to Boost Nectar Points

So can you boost your points like you can with the Tesco Clubcard scheme?

Not really (unfortunately). You get the occasional offer but their few and far between. For example, one of the only decent offers used to be a £12 pizza at Pizza Hut for £5 worth of points.

Unfortunately, this isn’t available anymore either though…

The best way to boost them is to wait for the Sainsbury’s Double Up promotion which usually runs twice a year. The last one was in November last year with an event this year yet to be announced.

Where to Spend Nectar Points

So, as there’s not really any deals to boost your Nectar points, where should you spend them? The places you can spend Nectar points is pretty limited, to be honest.

Argos, eBay and Sainsbury’s tend to be my go-to places to redeem them, although you don’t tend to get a great deal. You can just swap for the value of the points rather than boosting as you can with Tesco Clubcard points.

• Spend at Sainsbury’s to get money off your weekly shop. 500 points are worth £2.50 unless they’re running a Double Up event which usually happens twice a year.
• Redeem Points on eBay– again 500 points are worth £2.50. If you’ve already linked your accounts to collect Nectar points on eBay*, you can get a voucher online by redeeming in multiples of 500 points.
• Spend Nectar points at Argos. You can spend them online or in-store by swiping your Nectar card at the till and choosing how many points you want to use.
• Doing a spot of Decorating? You can redeem at Dulux Decorator Centres. Although this one of the more frustrating deals. You’ll have to redeem a minimum of 4,000 Nectar points to get a credit voucher!
• Use to buy Train Tickets. Swap your Nectar points for either a £2.50, £5, £10, £20 or £50 voucher with LINR (London North Eastern Railway)to use on Advance purchase Train Tickets or use your points to pay in full or part payment on Eurostar Escape Train Tickets – 500 Points are worth £2.50
• Redeem Nectar Points on Cinema Tickets at Vue Cinemas, but as with most of the deals 500 points only equals £2.50 off.

Other Nectar Card Perks

You can get a couple of other perks such as:

• 20% of Sainsbury’s Bank Travel Insurance when you quote a valid Nectar Card Number. You’ll need to weigh this up against better quotes and Cashback availability though.
• Better Exchange rates on Foreign Currency are available for Nectar Card Holders with Sainsbury’s Bank. Plus, you can collect Nectar Points at the same time – 10 Nectar Points for each £100 you exchange.

New Nectar Scheme

Sainsbury’s has recently launched the “New Nectar” scheme. Essentially, it’s a switch to a digital app-based system. Shoppers will still be able to collect their usual 1 Nectar point be £1 spent in-store.

But, the new scheme is meant to reward shoppers with Nectar points for choosing weekly offers similar to Cashback Apps such as Shopmium. Offers are based on stuff they normally buy in Sainsbury’s so it should benefit cardholders.

What is the Superdrug Health and Beautycard?

The Superdrug Health and Beautycard is the loyalty card offered by Superdrug. It’s basically Superdrug’s equivalent to the Boots Advantage Card.

It was originally launched in 2011 and was called “The Beautycard”. It was then renamed as “The Health and Beautycard” in 2015 to give it a broader appeal.

How Does the Superdrug Beauty Card Work?

The Superdrug Health and Beautycard works in pretty much the same way as most other loyalty cards such as the Boots Advantage card, Tesco Clubcard or the Nectar scheme. Basically, you earn points whenever you spend in-store or online*. You can then use your points to get money off future purchases.

How Much are Superdrug Points Worth?

With the Beauty card you get 1 point per £1 you spend in-store or online*. You can spend £1 for every 100 points you collect making 1 point worth 1p.

How do I get a Superdrug Beautycard?

To get a Superdrug card you can either get a Free card in-store then register it online*, or if you prefer to fill out an application form instore.

Alternatively, you can download the app, set up a new account and create a digital card within the app.

To register using the app you just need to.

• Enter your email and choose a password.
• If you have a card already you can enter the number in the app. If you haven’t you can select the checkbox at the bottom of the page to “Create a digital Health & Beautycard

• Then you need to fill in your name and address.

How to Collect Superdrug Points

Collecting Superdrug points in-store is just a case of presenting your card at the checkout. Once it’s been swiped by the cashier, your in-store spend will be tracked, earning you point son your card.

To collect pints online at superdrug.com you’ll need to link your Health and Beauty Card to your online account.

How to Spend Superdrug Points

Spending your points is pretty simple. You simply hand over your Superdrug card at the till in-store and let the cashier know how many points you want to spend. You can only spend them in increments of 100 though (£1 increments).

One of the good points about the Superdrug scheme is that you can use your points as part payment. This sets it apart from the Boots Advantage Card that rather annoyingly only lets you spend your points if the value of your points covers the entire purchase cost.

That being said the Superdrug rate is far less generous than the Advantage scheme, but I guess you can’t have everything!

Do Superdrug Points Expire?

Superdrug Health and Beauty Card points last 24 months from the date your first collect them. Plus, your account needs to be active at least once every rolling 12-month period. If it isn’t your account is deemed to be inactive and can be closed (forfeiting all pints). This is something to be aware of if you’re an infrequent Superdrug shopper and have a card.

How to add points to Superdrug card online from your Receipt

If you forget your card 9or just forget to scan it), then you can still add your points as long as you’ve got your receipt.

You can log into your online Superdrug account and click on the “Claim points” button.

Then you get a screen like this

You then just fill out the form and submit it.

You’ll need to fill in:

• Receipt Number: This is marked at the bottom of your receipt.
• Store number: This is marked on the receipt next to the word “STORE”
• Till number: This is the code beginning with a “T”
• Receipt date
• Total amount spent

If you’re not sure where to find any of the information, the form has a little icon marked “Where can I find this”. If you click on this, it brings up a picture of a receipt and indicates which code you need.

Other Benefits

You don’t just get points with the Beautycard though. You also get some nice extra perks for being a member of the scheme.

Free Standard Delivery on orders over £10

With the Beautycard, you get free delivery on online orders when you spend over £10. Non-beauty card members need to spend over £15 so this is a nice perk if shop online at Superdrug.

Treat Thursday

You get access to exclusive discounts every Thursday. You’ll need at online Superdrug account and you get the offers emailed to you. So, again a nice perk if you’re looking for some extra discounts.
Bonus Points

Superdrug also periodically runs special events where you can earn triple points or extra bonus points when you buy selected products or shop during the event. Don’t get blinded by the points offers though, always make sure the same product isn’t available somewhere else for a cheaper price.

At the end of the day, loyalty points offers are just another form of promotion to boost sales and don’t always give you the best deal.

Member Pricing

You get discounted prices on selected products. The eligible products change every few weeks and like the Treat Thursday offers, the discounted products are emailed to you.

Birthday Gift – Freebie Alert!

How Many Nectar Partners are There?

There are over 380 partners featured on the Nectar scheme website.

Most of these are places that let you collect Nectar points with only a few that you can actually spend them at.

Now I mentioned at the start that you should avoid collecting Nectar points at certain places. You might be wondering why you would ever decide not to collect loyalty points, after all, it’s basically something for nothing right?

Wrong… (well kind of).

Basically, the reason you should avoid collecting points at certain nectar partners comes down to the way you can claim the points. Places like Sainsbury’s where you simply swipe your card in-store are fine (this is one of the places you should definitely always collect Nectar points!).

But, to collect them with some of the online retailers, you need to click through to the retailer from the Nectar site…. This means, that in this scenario, the Nectar website is behaving like a cashback site.

And you guessed it, you can probably get a better deal with one of the other cashback sites. So, by collecting Nectar points you could be depriving yourself of a better cashback rate…

Let’s dive in and take a closer look.

Where Should You Collect Nectar Points?

Unfortunately, the Nectar website doesn’t let you filter partners by whether you can collect points in-store or by linking your account. This gave me no option but to manually go through all 384 partners to find out how many are simply “cashback deals”, i.e. where you click through from the site.

After a painstaking morning, I found that only 32 of the 384 partners weren’t cashback style offers. The 32 partners are below and let you collect Nectar points either by swiping in-store, linking your Nectar card to an online account or quoting your Nectar card number when you place an order.

You can only collect Nectar points with the other 352 partners when you click through from the Nectar website as you would a cashback site such as TopCashback* or Quidco*.

So, for these offers it’s highly likely you’ll get a better rate through one of the big cashback sites so it’s probably best to double-check before you opt for Nectar points.

And to find out the best cashback rates, I recently used a handy new site called Cashback Angel when I compared TopCashback and Quidco to see which site paid the most. So, if you want to make life easier it’s well worth checking out.

Being a glutton for punishment after trawling through nearly 400 partners on the Nectar website, I decided to inflict a bit more pain on myself and compare the results from this comparison against the Nectar rate (just to see if I was right and that the cashback sites do offer a better deal).

I compared 16 offers and here are the results:

• Currys PC World – 2 points per £1 (1%) vs 1% cashback with either Quidco or TopCashback
• Just Eat – 1 point per £1 (0.5%) vs 1.2% for existing customers with TopCashback
• Debenhams – 6 points per £1 (3%) vs 3% from TopCashback
• Expedia – 6 points per £1 (3%) vs 4% for most offers from TopCashback
• Sports Direct – 2 points per £1 (1%) for new customers only vs 4% from TopCashback (all customers)
• New Look – 2 points per £1 (1%) vs 2% from TopCashback or Quidco
• Booking.com – 6 points per £1 (3%) vs 4% from TopCashback
• ASOS – 2 points per £1 (1%) vs 2.4% for existing customers from TopCashback (9.6% for new customers)
• Carphone Warehouse – 500 points for SIM-only contract (£2.50) vs £25 from TopCashback
• AO.com – 1 point per £1 (0.5%) vs a minimum of 1% with TopCashback (2.5% for some categories)
• Groupon – 2 points per £1 (1%) vs 18% from TopCashback
• Red Letter Days – 8 points per £1 (4%) vs 18% from Quidco
• Bohoo.com – 3 points per £1 (1.5%) vs 3.6% from TopCashback
• Lego – 2 points per £1 (1%) vs 3.6% from TopCashback
• Very – 2 points per £1 (1%) vs 1% from TopCashback and Quidco for existing customers (Up to 14% for new customers)
• Hotel Chocolat – 2 points per £1 (1%) for online orders or 175 points (87.5p) when signing up to monthly membership vs Up to 9.1% from TopCashback for online orders or £4.55 for signing up to the monthly subscription.

So as you can see, in most cases with these offers, you’re likely to be better off using a cashback site rather than going for Nectar points.

So I’ve dug through the site and pulled out the partners that let you collect points on either in-store purchases or by linking your Nectar card to an online account, so you’re not depriving yourself of cashback.

Sainsbury’s

This is a no-brainer and probably the reason most of us have a Nectar card in the first place. You can collect Nectar points on all your Sainsburys shopping and get 1 point per £1 spent. To get them you just swipe your physical card in-store or swipe the barcode in the app.

You can also collect points online, but importantly you don’t need to click through the Nectar website first. This means you can get cashback at the same time using either TopCashback* or Quidco* (or one of the many other cashback sites).

To collect points on your online shopping you just need to link your Sainsbury’s and Nectar accounts.

TU Clothing

Get 1 point per £1 spent on TU Clothing*. To earn points you can swipe your card at the till if you’re in a Sainsbury’s, or link your card to your TU account* if you order online.

Lloyds Pharmacies in Sainsbury’s Stores

Swipe your card at the till for 1 point per £1 spent on qualifying over the counter purchases. 100 bonus points on selected services such as travel vaccinations.

Esso Petrol Stations

Swipe your card at the till to claim 1 point per litre of fuel, or 2 points per £1 spent in-store. This only applies to Esso branded shops though.

eBay

You can collect Nectar points on everything you buy on eBay* when you link your Nectar card to your eBay account*

eBay also runs periodic promotions that boost the Nectar points you can collect such as 10X Nectar Points Offers on a certain spend or quadruple Nectar points like this one.

The promotions tend to be fairly short-lived though so usually over a weekend or a 24hour period.

You can also get a bonus 500 points at the moment* when you convert 1000 nectar points or more into eBay vouchers.

You can spend your Nectar points on eBay too by converting them into vouchers.

Argos

You can collect bonus Nectar points when you shop at Argos, again by linking your Argos and Nectar accounts*. They’re not available all the time though as you can only collect bonus Nectar points at Argos during certain promotions.

There aren’t any running at the time of writing but you can check here to see if any are available*

Collect Nectar points when you buy Train Tickets

You can collect Nectar points with several train companies without having to click through from the website. They all work by linking your Nectar card to your online account. The train services you can collect points with are:

• Avanti Westcoast – 2 points per £1 spent
• Great Western Railway – 5x Points until 29^th January (usually 2 points per £1 spent)
• LNER (London North Eastern Railway) – 2 points per £1 spent
• South Western Railway – 5x Points until 29^th January (usually 2 points per £1 spent)
• TransPennine Express – 2 points per 1 spent

Sainsbury’s Bank and Energy Products

You can collect points when you buy some Sainsbury’s Financial and Energy products, such as Home Insurance, Life Insurance, and Loans. With these deals, you tend to get a lump sum of points when you quote your Nectar number at the time you order your policy or get a quote.

With the Sainsbury’s Energy deal, when you link your Nectar account to your Sainsbury’s Energy account you collect Nectar points on all of your energy bills.

Dual fuel customers also get triple points when they shop in Sainsbury’s.

Dulux Decorator Centres

Swipe your Nectar card at the till or enter your card number on the online checkout page, to earn 2 points for every £1 spent.

Credit Cards

You can get bonus points with the following credit cards.

American Express Nectar Credit Card – Bonus of 20,000 Nectar points but you need to spend £2000 in the first 3 months! The card has a £25 annual fee too though so I’m not a huge fan of this one.

Sainsbury’s Bank credit card gives you 750 bonus Nectar points every time you spend £35 in Sainsbury’s. You can do this up to a maximum of 10 times, so if you’re a regular Sainsbury’s shopper it might be worth considering.

Daily Mail / MyMail Rewards

If you’re a Mail reader, you can collect points by signing up with the MyMail Rewards scheme. With the scheme, a 12-digit Unique code is printed on the back of the Daily Mail (and Mail on Sunday) every day.

To get your points you need to link your Nectar card to your MyMail account, then enter this number on your MyMail rewards account.

• On Mondays to Fridays, you collect 5 Nectar points each day
• Saturdays you get 10 Nectar points,
• And Sundays you get 15 Nectar points.
• You also get 30 bonus points for collecting all codes for a week.

This means you can collect a maximum of 80 Points a week. Roughly 40p worth of Nectar points.

There are a couple more ways you can collect points with the Daily Mail too.

• You can collect 2 points for every £1 you spend on Mailshop.co.uk
• If you subscribe to the MailPlus Digital Subscription to the Daily Mail and Mal on Sunday, you can link your Nectar account to earn points. You get 100 Nectar points in your first month then another 100 3 months later is you’re still subscribed.

Nectar Canvass

If you like giving your opinion, Nectar Canvas lets you earn Nectar points for completing surveys. You can earn up to 120 points per survey.

This only equates to 60p, so I personally don’t think this is really worth bothering with. According to the Nectar Canvas help section, surveys typically take less than 15-20 minutes. So, 15 minutes to earn 60p worth of Nectar points doesn’t seem like a great deal to me! One to steer clear of I think

Oxfam Tag a Bag Scheme

With the Oxfam Tag a Bag Scheme you get 100 Nectar points when you sign up to the scheme, then get 2 points per £1 your Donated items raise when they’re sold.

How it Works

Once you sign up, you’ll get some personalised tags sent out to you in the post

Oxfam then tracks your items so that when they’re sold you earn Nectar points on the proceeds.

You can also get 2 points per £1 you spend online at the Oxfam shop.

Nectar Toolbar Browser Extension

The Nectar Notifier is a handy browser extension that notifies you when Nectar points are available when your shopping online.

TopCashback and Quidco both have similar reminder tools.

You also earn Nectar points as you search online. You get 1 point per 2 valid searches, up to a maximum of 200 points a month.

 A Few More Places you can link accounts

We’re down to the last few places now that let you link your account to collect points.

• Brakes – 1 point per £1 spent on Foodservice products
• DFDS – Collect 2 points per £1 on all bookings made from UK ferry ports
• DHL – 1 point for every £1 spent on sending parcels with DHL Express
• Europcar – Collect 1 point per £1 spent on all UK Europcar car or van rentals, and a fixed 200 points for car or van rentals abroad.
• Viking – 2 points per £1 when you place an order at Viking.
