This week’s EuroTrash tackles the question cycling media can’t stop asking, with Mike’s guess that Seixas would hang on but lose the sprint. Mike also argues that Brandon McNulty’s World Championship win has drawn unfair expectations, and weighs whether Primož Roglič will really retire after his European Championships time trial win. Then come post-season reflections on a year split between Pogačar’s dominance and thrilling close racing, a Ride of the Week at China Camp State Park in Marin County, and a Puck Pieterse wheelie in the PEZ video.

Scan the Substacks, the IG posts, the Reddit threads, and you’ll find that the cyclosphere is talking about the three topics you’ll find below: What we might have seen had a healthy Pogaar lined up an Il Lombardia; the unreasonable expectations we have for Brandon McNulty and just one (very) significant win; and where Primo Rogli is headed next (including possibly, into retirement). Maybe even…dropped him? It’s on every cycling fan’s mind. We can’t help but indulge in conjecture and imagination:Who would win, given the same equipment Pogaar or Merckx? If Greg LeMond hadn’t been shot and hadn’t later been felled by the dawn of the EPO era how many Tours would he have won?If Chris Froome hadn’t crashed before the 2019 Tour, would he have tied or broken the win record? If Armstrong hadn’t…Oh, never mind.Cycling media was riddled with such conjecture this week. Videos, podcasts, articles, Instagram posts, all suggesting that maybe Pogaar has finally met his match and that match is barely done being a teenager. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Velon CC (@veloncc) My guess?
Paul Seixas lit up Il Lombardia with a climbing performance that raises big questions for 2027. But beyond the Frenchmans breakthrough, cycling faces familiar challenges: an overcrowded calendar, competing championships and riders with limited influence over the sports future. The scale of what Seixas did on Saturday is hard to overstate, considering how his display of raw climbing strength left the sports best one-day riders with no answers. With Pogaar absent, the sports best one-day riders had their clearest shot at Lombardia in six years, yet a rider who spent the vast majority of the season as a teenager, in just his second pro season, simply rode every one of them off his wheel....

You service your bike, track your watts, and keep a close eye on your trainingbut when did you last check your health? Being a fit endurance athlete doesnt make you immune to medical problems, and feeling strong on the bike doesnt tell the whole story. Health checks for cyclists deserve a place alongside training and recovery, with screening tailored to your age, symptoms, family history, and individual risks. Get your health checkupPerhaps it’s because we don’t like thinking about our mortality, or maybe it’s because we continually push what’s possible for us on our bikes week in and week out. But we as a community tend to do a poor job of preventative maintenance. This may seem like I’m painting with awfully broad strokes, but the longer I’ve been in the endurance athletic community, the more surprised I am to find that many skip out, or do not even think about routine medical checks.Sonny Colbrelli – From Roubaix winner to retirement for health reasonsJust Because You Feel Fine, Doesn’t Mean You Are FineOver the last few years there have been more and more incidents of major medical emergencies occurring to athletes in both triathlon and cycling. Sonny Cobrellis sudden collapse after the finish line in the Volta a Catalunya in March 2022 is a prime example. The reality that a high level of fitness does not pardon you from baseline health tests.Stroke, cardiac events, and embolisms, while often thought to be determined significantly through heredity, are also impacted significantly by lifestyle factors,...

Riding around Lake Como is one of cyclings great experiences a stunning mix of challenging climbs, fast descents, and postcard-perfect views. My loop from Hotel Il Perlo in Bellagio took in the legendary Madonna del Ghisallo, a visit to its iconic church and museum, a sweeping descent into Como, and the technical Civiglio climb a regular feature in the Giro di Lombardia – a must-ride for any cyclist exploring the region. With smooth roads, lakeside pizza in Como, and golden late-fall light over the water, this 80-kilometer ride captured everything that makes cycling in Italy unforgettable. The Civiglio Climb in Como is often the launch pad for race winning moves at the Giro di Lombardia, and after years of just watching, I finally rode it to see for myself how technical and steep this one is.The 2026 edition of the race starts in Bergamo and tackles this beautiful little climb after a long descent from the Madonna del Ghisallo and I consider it a must-do any time you’re in the region. The day I did this ride in 2023, I’d intended to ride the Civiglio climb out of Como in the same direction as the Giro di Lombardia raced it in October 2022, but in the end – descending it made for a much more interesting video, and was a whole lot easier than climbing the 5km, 10%+ grade climb. The climb figured as a key spot on my loop at Lake Como that began in Bellagio then up the Madonna del Ghisallo...

In his introduction to Live to Ride, author Peter Flax, former editor-in-chief of Bicycling magazine, writes: I don’t think of my bike life as a hobby or a fitness routine or a leisure activity…..For me, riding is something that truly shapes my identityhow I look at the universe, how I center myself in a complicated world, how I find joy and meaning and, often, very good cups of coffee. If you are a bike rider, I bet you understand what I mean.He describes the many sub-cultures of cycling and the barriers that we put up, often unconsciously but sometimes with intent, gate-keeping others from our category and reinforcing our own membership in it. But since relocating to Los Angeles in 2014 and becoming a regular bike commuter, Flax has seen a shift in those sub-cultures as riders moved outside of their once defined niches. He saw racers turn into cycling advocates, the rise of e-bikes and gravel ones, the pandemic that lit a spark for a new bike boom. Live to Ride takes into account these new shifts and explores what their meaning can be to each of us.The book is divided into six chapters, each with a defining section followed by short profiles of riders who exemplify that aspect, plus some examples of suitable equipment for that particular pursuit. Adventure covers the growth of the new kind of bike touring, bikepacking, that takes riders off-road to exotic destinations usually not considered for biking; Speed is about the joy of...

Race Report: Paul Seixas delivered a stunning performance at Il Lombardia, riding away from the favourites on the steep slopes of the Civiglio before soloing into Como to claim his first Monument. Just 20 years old, the Frenchman turned the seasons final big showdown into a demonstration of climbing class. Giulio Ciccone and Enric Mas were left chasing podium places, while Remco Evenepoels hopes unravelled on the decisive climb. The talent was never in question. Now Paul Seixas has a Monument to go with it.On the roads from Bergamo to Como, the young Frenchman took on some of the biggest names in cyclingand dropped the lot. His attack on the Civiglio, around 20 kilometres from the finish, proved too much for Isaac del Toro, Brandon McNulty, Tom Pidcock and, eventually, Giulio Ciccone.Once Seixas had daylight, there was no bringing him back. The Race of the Falling Leaves had found a new star.Destination – ComoBefore the Racing: Riders Demand Safer RoadsThe first significant moment came before anyone turned a pedal in anger. The peloton delayed the start by around five minutes in a protest over rider safety, following a frightening incident at Tre Valli Varesine. Pinarello-Q36.5 riders Marcel Camprub and Tom Gloag had been caught out by a police motorcycle travelling in the wrong direction. Both escaped serious injury, but the consequences could have been far worse.European champion Remco Evenepoel stood at the front of the bunch to explain the protest. The race finally rolled out of Bergamo at around 11:15, with 239 kilometres...

VIDEO: As we count down to the final Monument of the 2026 pro road cycling season, I think it’s right to refresh the feed with this enlightening and entertaining chat with Chris Horner from 2024. We talked in depth about the Giro di Lombardia, running 240km from Bergamo to Como and taking in the climbs around one of cycling most scenic regions, and what makes this race so special.Click Play to watch the interview, and see more at the PEZ Youtube channel here. Since 2015, the race has swapped start / finish lines with Como, running a slightly different route each year, but always using the climbs around Lake Como as the defining parts of the corsa. The start rolls out from the Bergamo city center, in the shadow of the ancient and picturesque Citta Alta on Saturday, Oct. 12.It’s call the “climbers’ Classic” for one reason – note the above route profile for details. The race always includes a climb past the famous Madonna del Ghisallo church. In Fausto Coppi’s day, this climb (taken from the north approach via Bellagio) was the defining feature if the route. Coppi won the race 5 times, the first four after he solo’d over the top on his way to the finish in Milan. This year the route takes the climb from south to north, descending down the steeper side to Bellagio before turning left and running down the lake to the difficult Sormano climb. The Muro di Sormano is notorious for its steep grades of up to...

Roadside Lombardia 2007: Saturday October the 10th sees the 120th Il Lombardia, one of the oldest Monuments. Ed Hood wasn’t old enough to remember the first edition in 1905, but did have a romantic relationship with the ‘Race of the Falling Leaves’ for a long time. He casts his memory back to his first visit to the Northern Italian race in 2007.In January 2025 we lost our friend and colleague Ed Hood, two years after his devastating stroke. We will never forget Ed and his knowledge, connections in the cycling world, his writing style and love for the sport. Ed wrote thousands of stunning articles for PEZ, so we will pay homage the ‘King of the Blackberry’ with re-runs of his great work. And a big thank you to everyone who contributed to Ed’s ‘Go Fund Me’. It made a big difference to his last two years. You can read the PEZ-Crew’s memories of Ed Hood HERE.My first memories of the Tour of Lombardia are of black and white pictures in the British Cycling Weekly magazine of my hero, Eddy Merckx powering up unfeasibly narrow climbs with magnificent vistas across the lakes and mountains of Lombardy unfolded behind him, screamed on by fanatical clubmen thats what we called them back then who had pedaled out to the best vantage spots. But it took me until 2007 until I actually got myself over to the last and most beautiful of the seasons Monuments.Excuse me while I put on my rose tinted specs and show...

WASHINGTON, DC October 8, 2026 The Amazon Armed Forces Cycling Classic, the region’s premier cycling event and a cornerstone of the American racing calendar for more than 25 years, today announced that its Saturday Men’s Pro/1 race has been approved as a Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) Category 1.2 road race and will join the UCI International Road Calendar in 2027. With the change, the race will move to a longer circuit: the same 20-kilometer course currently used for the non-competitive Challenge Ride.UCI status places the race alongside other international-calendar events in the United States, including the Philly Cycling Classic and the Tour of the Gila. Organizers expect the designation to attract more UCI-registered teams from around the world, bringing greater media attention and giving fans a broader, deeper competitive field. The 1.2 level was chosen deliberately so the event can continue to invite many of the highly competitive U.S. domestic elite teams that race almost exclusively in the United States.“This change reflects the vision we share with our partner Amaury Sport Organisation (A.S.O.) for the event’s future,” said Robert Laybourn, President of Arlington Sports, Inc, and the events Race Director. “Every major decision we make is guided by documented metrics and data. The event will continue to evolve and be refined as our budget and other constraints allow, pursuing changes that offer proven value to its growth, success and long-term sustainability.”Apart from the Saturday race, the weekend schedule, financial support both the Mens and womens teams and prize money will...

But the Italian weather site said Tuesday would be cloudy no rain and I hauled myself out of bed at the crack of 7AM, and started looking forward to the day.Manuele, Michele, and Gianni besides being excellent riding partners, offered up some prime motivation for my long term prospects with cycling.I still had to contend with Milanese rush hour to extract myself from the city center and Id soon remember Id forgotten what a cluster the traffic in Como is but by 11:00AM I was rolling out of the parking lot and heading up Lake Comos west side enroute to cover...

It has run since 1905 and is known for its punishing climbs around Lake Como and Bergamo. This year Tadej Pogačar, who won five straight editions, isn't racing, and the field is wide open. Remco Evenepoel leads the favorites but has been inconsistent. Giulio Ciccone, Tom Pidcock and Davide Piganzoli all have claims, and Mike picks Isaac del Toro to win ahead of Paul Seixas and Pidcock. But thanks to its age and its spectacular but witheringly challenging parcours, it lives up to its Monumental status.Start with the age. The race was first run in 1905 as the Milano-Milano, which makes it older than the Giro d’Italia itself. (Check out Pez’ account of that devilish version of Lombardia here.) That kind of pedigree matters in a sport that treats history as currency. Every great climber and attacker of the last century has measured himself against these roads, and the winners’ list reads like a who’s who of cycling royalty. Fausto Coppi set the original the benchmark, with five victories, four of them in a row after the war....

Lombardia History: Louison Bobets 1951 Giro di Lombardia victory delivered a dramatic finish on Milans Vigorelli velodromeand a win the Frenchman counted among his most satisfying. This vintage feature by Flix Lvitan recalls Bobets battle with Fausto Coppi and his rivals on the Madonna del Ghisallo, his decisive finishing sprint, and his hopes of repeating the triumph the following autumn.PEZ SEz: Originally written ahead of the 1952 Giro di Lombardia, this article looks back at Louison Bobets 1951 victory and assesses his chances of winning again. The translation retains the original writers perspective and period descriptions of the course. By Flix LvitanLouison Bobet, sprint winner of the last Giro di Lombardia, has had a disappointing season this year. His recent victory in the Grand Prix des Nations, however, suggests that he has returned to excellent form. In the next edition of autumns great classic, he will once again be a dangerous opponent for our champions. What does the Madonna del Ghisallo have in store for Louison Bobet this time? Two years ago, we remember finding him there crying out in despair, a wheel in his hand, on a dust-covered bend. Last October, by contrast, we followed him up the climb as he fought shoulder to shoulder with Coppi, Soldani and Kbler. His hair blowing in the wind, hands gripping the handlebars and lips parted, he climbed confidently and powerfully, ready for every battle. Not remotely intimidated by Faustos presence, he was determined to throw all his strength into the struggle before accepting defeat.As...

This translated archive feature revisits the Red Devil’s victory and the proud champion behind one of cycling’s most colourful stories.

Cyclings history is full of stories that sound almost too good to be trueand Giovanni Gerbis victory in the first Giro di Lombardia belongs right up there. The year was 1905. The roads were rough, the equipment basic, and a riders ability to outthink his rivals could matter as much as the strength in his legs. Gerbi, known as the Red Devil, apparently had plenty of both.In this vintage account taken from the 1952 official race program (See our inside look here), Italian writer Ulisse Cozzi visits the former champion in Asti and revisits his legendary tram-track escape. What follows is a glimpse into cyclings unruly early yearsand the personality of a man who still took his victories very seriously.——–The Giro di Lombardia was born in 1905. Giovanni Gerbithe Red Devilwas its first winner. The story of his breakaway, prepared with a truly diabolical plan and carried out with tremendous strength, has become legend: a familiar legend with the flavour of a fairy tale, at once innocent and mischievous.Giovanni Gerbi, the first winner of the Giro di Lombardia, raced under the devils unsettling banner in 1905.Those were cyclings heroic days. Regulations already existed, and offenders were already punished with fines and disqualifications. The principles of discipline and sporting fairness were already being asserted, and attempts were being made to give the disorderly business of bicycle racing an official framework. But the unimaginable condition of the roads in those days, the peculiarities of the mechanical equipment, the uncertain availability of supplies during races,...

Monitoring blood biomarkers may seem reserved for elite athletes, but low levels of vitamins and minerals are common even among amateurs, and can have negative effects on performance. As long winter training days approach, now is the best time to proactively get blood work evaluated. In fact, you may already be behind on scheduling yours.Get a full blood countIntro to Blood WorkOur Toolbox editor Dr. Stephen Cheung looked at Blood Donation and Training Impact earlier, but here we’ll look at how the actual composition of your blood can affect your cycling performance.Biochemical and hematological testing provides valuable insights into your bodys ability to balance training and recovery, and it can indicate when things are going awry. However, one issue many athletes face is simply not getting testing done. Additionally, arbitrary, isolated, or inconsistent testing provides limited information and makes interpretation challenging. Normal blood values vary between non-athletes and athletes, between sports, and even between race and gender. If one of your vitamin or mineral values is off, correcting it can take weeks or even months.Common Vitamin DeficienciesAthletes often don’t feel like anything is wrong, but it’s impossible to feel your cellular health status, until problems really start to worsen. Vitamin and mineral deficiencies are common in sports, especially as metabolic stress and training volume increase, or as sleep, life stress, or poor dietary habits take their toll. Some common problem areas for athletes include iron, vitamin D, Omega-3, folate, B-12, magnesium, and calcium. For endurance athletes, issues with iron and vitamin...

Last week the city celebrated its second time hosting this event and fans enjoying some terrific racing.Travellers passing through the terminal at the Montreal-Trudeau International Airport could enjoy a special exhibition devoted to the history of cycling in Montreal, with a special section devoted to iconic framebuilder Giuseppe Marinoni. Now retired, although his company still builds bikes, he celebrated his 89th birthday two days after the races concluded. Time to turn back the clock and look at the documentary film made about him a dozen years ago.Marinoni: The Fire in the Flame is an 87 minute film by Tony Girardin that follows its subject, the then-75 year old Marinoni, around his workshop and home before going off to Italy where the entertaining curmudgeon plans to tackle the One Hour Record for his age group. For much of the film he complains to Girardin, who is present in voice throughout, about the filming, although one is never sure if he really means what he says. When talking about frame building, he tries to be as discouraging as possible, but it is clear that as much as he grumbles he has lived for his work beyond financial considerations. We learn of his family’s history of working in metal in Rovetto, near Bergamo, in Northern Italy, but while he clearly takes pride in the more than 20,000 frames he has built, the path he took was not obvious.A successful regional...
