Every photographer has stood on their own version of a battlefield.

Camera in hand.
Scene unfolding.
That small voice whispering:

• Is this good enough?
• Will anyone care?
• What if I fail?

Creative doubt in photography doesn’t usually look dramatic. It looks like hesitation. It looks like comparison. It looks like scrolling instead of shooting.

In this episode, I talk about how much of that fear is tied to outcome — likes, validation, recognition, sales. When we attach our creative identity to the response, photography becomes heavy.

But what if the only thing we’re actually responsible for is the act itself?

Photography and Purpose: Show Up, Do the Work

At its core, photography is about attention.

How to Get Back to Your Passion

There’s this strange myth in the creative world that if you truly love photography, you’ll always feel inspired. Always shooting. Always creating. Always “on.”

But that’s not real life.

Sometimes you drift.

Not because you stopped loving photography — but because other passions pulled your focus. Work shifts. Projects evolve. Life rearranges itself. And before you know it, your camera bag hasn’t moved in months.

If you’re a photographer who hasn’t been shooting lately, let me say this: you didn’t lose your passion.

You just paused it.

Creative Burnout vs. Creative Seasons

There’s a difference between creative burnout and a creative season changing.

Burnout feels heavy. Draining. Like you’re forcing something.

A creative season shift feels quieter. You’re still creative — just in a different direction.

For me, I’ve been pouring energy into other projects. Writing. Building. Producing content. Strong passions. Meaningful work.

But photography? It’s part of my identity. Just like jazz guitar. And when you’ve invested decades into something — when it’s shaped how you see the world — walking away completely feels like abandoning an old friend.

And I’m not trying to be that guy.

How to Get Back Into Photography (Without Pressure)

Here’s what I’m realizing about getting back into photography:

You don’t restart with a grand plan.
You restart small.

• Take your camera with you when you leave the house.
• Photograph a friend.
• Walk your neighborhood.
• Shoot for yourself — not for Instagram.
• Print something.

You don’t need a rebrand.
You need reconnection.

And maybe — just maybe — you don’t go back to the exact type of photography you used to do. Maybe that chapter closed for a reason. Growth isn’t betrayal. It’s evolution.

The key is this: don’t wait until you “feel inspired.” Action creates inspiration far more often than inspiration creates action.

Returning to What Matters

Coming back to photography feels less like launching something new… and more like returning home.

If you’ve been away from your creative passion — whether that’s photography, music, painting, writing — give yourself permission to step back in gently.

No guilt.

Gordon Parks: The Renaissance Behind the Lens – If you’ve ever wondered what it means to rise above your circumstances, to carve beauty from hardship, or to tell truth with nothing but a camera in your hands… then today’s episode is one you won’t want to miss. We’re about to spend some time with the story of a man named Gordon Parks — a name that belongs not just to a man, but to a movement.

Gordon Parks: The Renaissance Behind the Lens

Gordon Parks was more than a photographer. He was a poet, a filmmaker, a novelist, and a composer. A true Renaissance man in every sense of the word. Born in 1912 in Fort Scott, Kansas, he was the youngest of 15 children — born dead, in fact, and brought back to life by a country doctor. Life didn’t make things easy for him, but Gordon Parks never asked for easy. He asked for meaning.

This episode takes you through the life and legacy of Gordon Parks, the man whose lens captured both elegance and injustice. From playing piano in brothels to photographing Malcolm X and Muhammad Ali, Parks walked through many worlds — and he made each one his own. His work for LIFE Magazine changed the face of American photojournalism, and his direction of Shaft in 1971 broke new ground in Hollywood.

But Gordon Parks wasn’t interested in fame for its own sake. He used every tool at his disposal — the pen, the piano, the camera, and the moving image — to speak truth, to honor beauty, and to connect with people on the deepest level. David Bailey is one of the latter.

Well, good news – Fujifilm ACROS II has an official shipping date! This has been announced for a while now, but that’s okay. Anytime is a good time to talk about ACROS.

What do you guys and gals think about Instagram’s plan to remove the “Likes”? I’ll share my 2 cents.

Shooting something different. Last weekend I found myself shooting in one of the local state parks here in Vegas. It was definitely something different than the darker, moodier stuff I’m often focused on. Fun stuff, though.

I’m also putting together a small photo book using the services of MagCloud, another company owned by Blurb. I’ll share my experiences so far.

Many of us as photographers have certain genres where we tend to spend a lot of our time; certain subjects that we’re more passionate about shooting. That’s a good thing because the more we shoot those subjects we’re most passionate about, the more we refine our process and develop are skill set in that arena.

However, if all we ever shoot is that main focus of our photography, it does bring up the potential to start to become bored. Sometimes it might be a good idea to shoot something completely outside of your wheelhouse, really mix it up a bit. Enjoy.

With his recent passing, I started seeing more of his work displayed in posts as a memorial to the great photographer. It’s beautiful work; wonderful use of color and story plays a strong role in each composition.

Unless you’re a professional photographer with clients and paid assignments, it can be easy to leave the camera alone for long periods of time. You’re not pushed to keep shooting consistently and so maybe you don’t.

Street Photography is a genre; a category of photography that when someone says, “Street Photography” I think we all kind of have an idea in our mind about what that term means.

However, the thing is that street photography has grown into a category that really has no rules, no boundaries, no clear meaning of what it actually is. It can be something completely different for each person who considers themselves a street photographer. Enjoy.

I think if you’ve been involved with photography for any amount of time you’ll be familiar with the term G.A.S. – Gear Acquisition Syndrome. It’s an easy path to get on, and I’ve enjoyed the pursuit of gear myself. Luckily less these days, but it IS a real thing.

Lately I’ve found myself more involved in the concept of Film Lust, the pursuit and enjoyment of exploring different kinds of film; seeing the different looks; the different moods and feel you get; shooting with different emulsions. I’ve found that, just as Gear Lust is a thing, so is Film Lust. Enjoy.

Fujifilm ACROS II – Coming fall of 2019

Fujifilm ACROS II… Wow, this was unexpected, at least I for one did not see this coming. I really felt that Fujifilm was really happy to be exiting the analog side of photography to keep its focus on the digital products; their X Series cameras and lenses.

I remember when Fujifilm announced the discontinuation of its large format versions of ACROS. After that, we all knew what was coming next. Yep, within a few months of that announcement, Fujifilm subsequently let us know that ACROS in 135 and 120 formats was being discontinued, fall of 2018.

Embracing the Change

For the past year I’ve been happy to experiment with different film stocks, because I just wanted to move on, not stay too emotionally attached to ACROS’ aesthetic. As a result, I’ve ended up choosing Kodak Tri-X as my go-to film. I know that seems like an odd choice. The look of Tri-X compared to the look of ACROS… well, to many that probably doesn’t make much sense.

But, it looks like I can continue to maintain my obsession for this beautiful film. Because, according to a post from EM on Emuslive.org Fujifilm ACROS II will be coming back sometime in the fall of 2019. How cool is that!?

I’ll keep enough stock of the original ACROS so that I can compare the old to the new. You should do that too. Keep a couple rolls of the original film and we can all compare our findings. That’ll be cool. Man, I am so happy about this!

For the creative mind, inspiration is pure gold. To have something that inspires you and lights up your creativity is priceless. Whether that something is a muse; a landscape; a street scene; or even just a concept… that inspiration really is priceless.

However, that source of inspiration might not might not always seem to be there. What do you do then? What do you do when you’re just not inspired. You can’t seem to find the motivation to pick up your camera?

You do it anyway. Most people don’t live in a constant flow of inspiration. But that shouldn’t stop us from constantly being creative. Inspiration, don’t wait for it.

In the last episode I talked about and posted photos from my photo shoot with Jonny; the shots that we got with ACROS…. then I porceeded to gush on about ACROS for most of that episode. (very warrented gushing, I might add)

I did mention that the other film I used on that shoot was Tri-X, kind of my new best friend in film these days. After coming down from my ACROS high, I started looking through the Tri-X film from the shoot. At first I thought I might be disappointed after looking at the ACROS shots. Nope. Tri-X held it’s own. Enjoy.

Eastman Double-X 35mm black and white film. Man, this is a very cool film with a very cool look. It’s one of Kodak’s motion picture film stocks but is also available from places like Film Photography Projects online store, as well as Cinistill to shoot in 35mm cameras.

I gotta say, even just after shooting two rolls of this film, I’m definitely looking forward to shooting much more.

Also, why aren’t people making more black and white movies anymore. What’s the deal with that!? Enjoy.

I’m often drawn to photographing things from the past. To me, having something in the photography that’s from, say, the 1950s makes the photograph more interesting. Why, because although it may have been incredibly ordinary and common back in those days, it’s not ordinary or common anymore; and it does represent a little slice of history.

Think about the photographs you’re making today. Maybe some of them might seem a little ordinary today. But what will it be like when you look back on that photo in 10 – 20 years. It could give you a much different feeling.

One of my favorite aspects of photography is the long game; looking back on your photos from the past and see how you feel about something that you might not have given that much attention to back in the day. Enjoy.
