The Southfields Light-Switch On is always a highlight in the local calendar, bringing together families, friends, and neighbours to celebrate the start of the holiday season.

Curious pets love exploring anything new, and your Christmas tree is no exception! A poorly anchored tree could tip over, injuring your pet, breaking ornaments, or spilling tree water. A sturdy stand (and water for extra stability) will keep your tree firmly in place throughout the festive season.

STEP TWO: Leave your tree bare for a few days

The irresistible smell of a real Christmas tree can trigger an inquisitive streak in pets. Before decorating, allow your furry friend a few days to get used to the tree. This reduces the risk of accidents while they explore safely.

STEP THREE: Hide electrical lights and wires

Twinkling lights are a staple of Christmas, but wires can be tempting to chew. Keep cords out of reach or use protective covers to prevent accidents and protect your pets from harm.

STEP FOUR: Avoid tinsel

 Before setting up your tree, saw off the bottom 1 to 3 cm of the trunk. This fresh cut opens the pores in the bark, allowing the tree to absorb water through capillary action. Without this step, sap can block the pores within a few hours, preventing hydration.

 

2. Choose the right location
 Place your tree in a stable environment. Avoid radiators, fireplaces, heaters, or direct sunlight - excess heat will dry out the tree more quickly. Likewise, try to avoid placing it near dehumidifiers or air conditioners, as these can also draw moisture from the tree, even if the room remains cool. Christmas trees thrive in consistent, moderate temperatures, which helps them stay fresh throughout the festive season. 

 

3. Use a proper stand
 Always use a purpose-built, water holding Christmas tree stand. This ensures both stability and proper water access. Avoid makeshift solutions like buckets with bricks or stones, which can be unstable and restrict water uptake. 

 

4. Water regularly
  Keep the stand topped up with plain water - never soil or sand, which can block the trunk’s pores. Depending on your tree’s size and home heating, it may drink 1 to 2 litres per day. Always ensure the water level never drops below the base of the trunk. Once the bark dries out, sap will reseal the pores, and the tree can no longer absorb water effectively.

 

5. Watch for pets
  If you have pets, particularly dogs, be aware that they may use the tree stand as a convenient water source. This can reduce the tree’s water intake, so check the level frequently.

Pets are known for being curious, so they are bound to want to investigate what this big addition to the living room is, but of course that shouldn’t put you off the idea of a real fir Christmas tree.

Christmas tree expert and dog and cat mum herself, Veronika Kusak from Pines and Needles is on hand with her top tips to make sure your tree is pet-proofed this festive season.

1. Securely anchor your Christmas tree

Your four-legged friend will undoubtedly be curious about your Christmas tree, and if it is not properly secured, it may tip and fall. If the tree falls, it could injure your pet, break fragile ornaments, or spill the tree water on the floor. Anchoring your tree will keep it in place throughout the festive season.

2. Leave your tree bare for a few days

The incredible smell of a real Christmas tree will certainly spark an inquisitive pet’s investigative streak, so it’s a good idea to leave your tree bare for a few days to allow your dog to get used to the tree without the risk of breaking any of your ornaments.

3. Hide electrical string lights and wires

Christmas is filled with lots of twinkly lights and colourful decorations, which all require wires. Make sure to keep wires out of sight and reach of your pet to discourage any chewing. The bright lights and colours may be tempting, so keep them out of reach to prevent your furry friend from coming to any harm.

4. Avoid tinsel

Bright, shiny tinsel definitely divides a room with its nostalgic charm, shall we say. It’s certainly eye-catching and will more than likely attract the attention of your pet. For those with dogs and cats, it’s probably best to avoid this as they may ingest the tinsel, which can result in intestinal blockage and a worrying trip to the vets.

5. Keep tree water covered and out of the way

Ensure that tree water is covered, so that your dog or cat is unable to drink from it. Not only do many people put fertilisers in, which can be toxic and upset your pet’s stomach, but stagnant water is a prime place for bacteria to grow, and in turn, your pet may end up with nausea or an upset stomach.

6. Place fragile ornaments higher up on your tree

Be warned - if your dog or cat knocks your Christmas tree, your favourite ornaments can be at risk! Put your delicate ornaments on sturdy branches at the top of your tree to avoid them getting knocked off and breaking.

7. Save the presents for Christmas morning

Many people keep presents from friends and family under the tree until Christmas Day and because of how inviting they look under the tree, they will get the attention of pets. Residents who are members of the green garden waste wheelie bin collection service can use this service to recycle their real Christmas trees. Trees must be put in the bins for recycling and broken down if necessary.

In the past, Croydon council has offered a service whereby you can leave your tree from a certain date in January outside your property and it will be removed and recycled within 2 weeks. Check their website closer to the time for more information.

You can also take your tree to be recycled at one of the council’s household reuse and recycle centres or if you subscribe to the garden waste collection service you can cut the tree down and put it in your garden waste.

From locals to tourists flocking the city to this massive attraction, Winter Wonderland has stayed at the top of its game. Manchester, England

This beautiful city hosts arguably the BEST Christmas markets England has to offer. Growing year by year since 1999, Manchester attracts more than 9 million visitors each year during the Christmas season. Claimed one of the best in Europe, Winchester Cathedral's Christmas Market is well renowned for its cheerful atmosphere which will keep you in high-spirits throughout your visit. Nordmann Fir

When you are looking for a real Christmas Tree for either your home or office the last thing you want to do is to think about needles. The Nordmann Fir is the king of the trees and its needles will stay attached throughout the festive season. 

By far, it is the most popular variety of Christmas tree in the UK, with its glossy green needles. The Nordmann Fir originates from the Caucasus mountains and are similar to the Fraser Fir but softer to the touch. The most common selling point for this type of Christmas tree is definitely its excellent needle retention. They can reach to 60 feet in height and you can get yours HERE!

Fraser Fir

Fraser Fir Christmas Trees with their dark blue-green foliage have a trimmer but distinctive shape when compared to other trees.  Pot Grown these trees look great and stay fresh throughout the season and are well known for their needle retention and rich orangey scent. 

If the tree is coming indoors all you need to do is put the pot into a decorative planter or on a plant saucer to make sure your floors stay dry as you water the tree like any other plant. Please note that these trees are not guaranteed to take root if replanted but they will remain looking great through out the Christmas season. It can take between 7 to 10 years to grow a 6-7ft Fraser Fir!

Fun fact: the Fraser Fir was named after John Fraser, a Scottish botanist (our trees are grown in Scotland!) who explored the southern Appalachian Mountains in the late 1700s. 

Norway Spruce

The Norway Spruce is the epitome of a traditional Christmas Tree with a shape and scent to die for. 

Like all trees, it loves being outside but you can help to keep it looking pristine and fresh by placing it in a watering stand and giving it a regular drink.

Norway Spruce needles are 1/2" to 1" long, dark green and shiny. The needle retention on these Christmas trees are poor without proper care but they are sure to keep your home smelling wonderful.

The Norway spruce is a fast-growing evergreen conifer which can reach 40m and live for up to 1,000 years. They are tall and straight and of a triangular appearance, with a pointed crown. 

This type is also used in construction, pulp and paper production, furniture, and musical instruments!

Positioning is key

Choosing the right spot is a massive priority and one that is overlooked, leading many to wonder 'why is my tree dying?' shortly after getting one. The Nordmann Fir is used to cold climates and originates from the mountainous regions of Europe.

To guarantee freshness, position your Christmas tree away from any heat sources such as radiators, fireplaces and direct sunlight.
Heat dries out your real Christmas tree faster, so the further away from potentially damaging heat sources the better, and the fresher your tree will remain.

Preparation 

Luckily for you, Pines and Needles prepare the tree trunk before delivery. We do this to all of our real trees so you don’t have to! Just incase though, before installation, saw off the bottom 1” (3cm) of the trunk. This creates a fresh cut and opens up the pores in the bark, which otherwise can block up with sap within a few hours of being cut. The real tree is then able to drink water via capillary action, allowing it to stay fresh over the festive season.

 Watering your tree

The most crucial survival tip? place your fresh tree in plain water - not soil or sand which would block absorption. This is a real tree we're talking about so water is essential to keeping it hydrated and therefore fresh and healthy! Everyday watering is a great way to keep the tree looking its best.

A specially designed watering stand is required of course when topping up your tree with a drink. Once secured in the stand, remove the netting and let your tree settle into its natural position before decorating.

Many precious hours can be wasted trying to make a Christmas tree stand up straight in an ordinary bucket using just bricks or stones! All stands are not created equal, and we strongly recommend the Cinco stands which can be used on trees up to 12ft tall.

Your Christmas tree may drink 2-3 pints (1-2 litres) of water per day, depending on its size and your central heating settings. This is very important as once the water level drops below the tree’s trunk, sap will re-seal the bark within a few hours, preventing the tree from drinking any further water even if you then re-fill the Christmas tree stand.

Bonus tip: what to do after Christmas

Recycling is really important, don't let your tree go to waste! The wood from your tree can be chipped into mulch or used for park footpaths or bridleways.
