This is a mix was an exclusive track on the physical copies of the Women of Japanese Vol.1 (WJR Vol.1). It consists of sections of the mix that ended up on the cutting room floor due to consideration of the length and tone of WJR Vol.1. There are a lot of great songs in here, and there was no reason to let these mixes go to waste, so I reexamined the recorded sections and put together a companion piece for WJR Vol.1. On this episode of Japan 2.0, David and Matt discuss Satoshi Miki’s Adrift in Tokyo.

This is a movie that is right up our alley. A movie about wandering aimlessly through the streets of Tokyo, it’s basically the Japan 2.0 story (okay, not really). But it is a wonderful slice-of-life film that takes quirky characters, strange natural phenomenons (like what happens when you put a wire coat hanger on your head), and a dash of magical realism which all adds up to a must see movie if you are either a fan of Japan and/or Japanese cinema. If anything, the movie poses the question, could a new tube of toothpaste change your life?

If you haven’t seen Adrift in Tokyo before, we recommend that you watch the film before listening to this episode, because this is a spoiler filled discussion on a movie that has earned the Japan 2.0 seal of approval.

This mix was originally believed to be lost in a hard drive wipe in 2018. The MP3 was recently discovered on a backup disk laying around Tatami Studio and it makes the perfect companion to our coffee episode which we had just released.

Artist in this mix includes songs by Towa Tei, The Cymbals, Sunaga t Experience, Cibo Motto, and more. The photo for this episode is of Okamoto Kumi (a.k.a. Kumisolo). She appears on the song House by the group Soft Landing Service. Her more recent album, Kabuki Femme Fatale (2017) is a recent Doki Doki discovery and is worth checking out.

Japan loves its music festivals, and it also loves its camping. In this episode of Japan 2.0, David and Matt share their experiences from a campsite music festival, a trend which is starting to take off with the Japanese music fans. They share their impressions of the event itself, their reasons for why they are not going to Fuji Rock, DJ ranger stations, and whether or not they would recommend seeing music at a mountain venue.

In this episode of the Japan 2.0 podcast, David and Matt are joined by a restaurant manager, Chad, who was visiting Japan in hopes of expanding his restaurant business to Tokyo. Chad had questions about starting a business in Japan and asked to meet with us to discuss the businesses trends of restaurants in Japan. We agreed and recorded our conversations to share with our Japan 2.0 listeners.

P.S. We recorded this episode at the restaurant/bar chain The Lock-Up, where we experienced unimaginable terrors!!! This episode is a little disjointed thematically, but that’s what makes it an exciting good time!

I was walking to Mmm Que Rico (one of my favorite cafes in Nakatsu, Osaka), when I received a message from Jordyn and Mike, a couple of fans of the Japan 2.0 podcast. They said that they were visiting Osaka and asked me for directions to the cafe. When we realized that we were both headed to the same place at the same time, it seemed like fate was trying to bring the three of us together. It was an amazing coincidence and also my first opportunity to meet fans of the podcast. After a short while they arrived and they made a great first impression. We talked over lunch and they told me about the experiences that they have had since arriving in Japan. It was clear that they were a fascinating couple and I knew that their unique perspectives would be perfect for the podcast. Lucky for us, they were gracious enough to agree to do an interview!

In this episode of the Japan 2.0 podcast, Jordyn and Mike share highlights from their month long excursion in Japan. We discuss Tokyo, transportation, safety, tattoos, English speakers, and much more!

I’m always glad to meet people who are as enthusiastic about Japanese culture as I am, and these two were no exception. It was a pleasure to interview them, and I’m happy to induct Jordyn and Mike as honorary members of the Japan 2.0 crew. They are always welcome back to the podcast and I hope to visit with them again when they return to Japan.

New Anime/Manga -“Tonkatsu DJ Agetaro”

It’s not often that I come across a new anime/manga series that I like, but when I do, I become obsessed. Point in case, Tonkatsu DJ Agetaro.

A few months ago, I walked off the elevator at LOFT in Shibuya and was greeted with old school beats and raps on a 40 second loop. Shocked that I wasn’t hearing mundane J-pop, I rushed excitedly to see where the funky breaks were coming from. Low and behold, there was a small corner of the department store set up with merchandise for what I would soon find out to be the best anime in quite some time. While the drawings/animation are childishly simple, the show captures the vibrant side of Shibuya rarely touched upon since the 90s. The basic idea of the story is about a kid who has to balance his day job as a tonkatsu chef with his secret passion for DJing. Even if you don’t normally like anime, I strongly recommend checking out the English episodes on Youtube!
