We’ve made great progress building a resilient and sustainable business to support our journalism, reducing our sensitivity to traffic and leaning into areas like Events. Beyond exceeding targets, the Events team is doing exactly what we hoped they would do: deepening relationships and extending our journalism into the real world.

While the work to sharpen and polish is ongoing, we’re already seeing results. Traffic has been healthy and steady since August — a rarity in the industry — and return visits are 12% higher than the previous 6 months. Which is a great start to a year that’s all about engagement!

As we look ahead, our 2026 goals are clear:
1) Build a resilient, sustainable business by meeting our financial goals. (Hit Goals!)
2) Make Business Insider a daily routine for our core audience. (Engagement!)

There’s more to do, but we are making incredible progress, and I’m so grateful for everyone at Business Insider’s resilience, grit, and passion.

Jan 31 : Alphabet unit Waymo is aiming to raise about $16 billion in a financing round that would value it at nearly $110 billion, Bloomberg News reported on Saturday, citing people familiar with the matter.

Alphabet would provide about $13 billion to the autonomous driving firm while the rest would come from investors including Sequoia Capital, DST Global and Dragoneer Investment Group, the report added.

“While we don’t comment on private financial matters, we are focused on the safety-led operational excellence and technological leadership required to meet the vast demand for autonomous mobility,” Waymo said in a statement to Reuters.

Alphabet did not immediately respond to request for comment.

In December last year, The Information reported Waymo was in talks to raise money at a valuation of at least $100 billion.

Waymo, which Alphabet carved out of Google’s self-driving car project in 2016, is the only operator in the U.S. offering paid robotaxi services with no safety drivers or in-vehicle attendants. It has a fleet of more than 2,500 vehicles.

This move underscores the accelerating race to commercialize fully autonomous vehicles, with leading players investing heavily and focusing on safety, technology refinement and regulatory cooperation to win market share.

The United States’ auto safety agency said on Thursday that it has opened an investigation after a Waymo self-driving vehicle struck a child near an elementary school in Santa Monica, California, last week, causing minor injuries and renewing concerns about the safety of robotaxis.

Ford has held talks with electric vehicle maker Xiaomi over a partnership that would pave the way for Chinese carmakers to gain a foothold in the US, according to four people familiar with the talks.

While the discussions were preliminary, Ford has explored forming a joint venture with Xiaomi to manufacture EVs in the US, according to the people.

Ford has also spoken with BYD and other Chinese carmakers about potential collaboration in the US.

Such a deal would be controversial in Washington. John Moolenaar, the Republican chair of the House China committee, told the FT that Ford would “be turning its back on American and allied partners, and it will make our country further dependent on China”.

Ford said: “This story is completely false. There is no truth to it.” Xiaomi did not respond to a request for comment. BYD declined to comment.

Ford chief executive Jim Farley is a vocal admirer of Chinese electric vehicles, having imported Xiaomi’s SU7 model for his own personal use. The Chinese group’s roots are in consumer electronics but it shocked the global automotive industry with a spectacular EV debut in 2024.

Farley warned last year that Chinese rivals pose an “existential threat” to western carmakers and had enough capacity in China alone to “put us all out of business”. He has previously said that Chinese companies are “absolutely coming” to the US.

Earlier this month, Farley hosted President Donald Trump at a Ford truck plant in Dearborn outside Detroit. During his visit, Trump told business leaders that if Chinese companies “want to come in and build a plant and hire you and hire your friends and your neighbours, that’s great, I love that”.

Ford has a licensing deal with China’s CATL to produce cells in the US using the battery giant’s technology. The Pentagon has designated CATL as a company with alleged Chinese military ties, which the group denies. The House China committee has also raised repeated concerns about the deal.

In 2024, the Biden administration in effect banned Chinese vehicles from the US by putting 100 per cent tariffs on car imports from China. Trump has kept those tariffs in addition to Biden-era restrictions on Chinese software and hardware for vehicles with a built-in internet connection.

Trump is preparing to visit China in April on a trip that could include a trade deal. Some experts believe the president wants to attract Chinese investment into the US, but his more hawkish officials would not welcome the prospect of allowing Chinese carmakers into the American market.

In 2021, during the final week of his first term, Trump added Xiaomi to a Pentagon list of companies with alleged ties to the Chinese military. The Biden administration removed it from the list later that year following a lawsuit from Xiaomi, which is headquartered in Beijing.

In December, the Republican chairs of several Congressional panels urged defence secretary Pete Hegseth to put Xiaomi back on the list. Xiaomi has repeatedly denied having military connections.

One former US official warned that allowing Ford to form a joint venture with Xiaomi would have a dangerous “domino effect” that would undermine US national security by driving other US carmakers into “a ‘forced marriage’ with Beijing as a matter of basic survival”.

Moolenaar said: “Joint ventures with Chinese companies frequently end poorly for American companies, and this new one would be a deal only Xi Jinping could love.”

BYD and other Chinese carmakers have made rapid inroads into Europe, south-east Asia and Latin America with affordable offerings of EVs and hybrids which are increasingly locally produced.

But Trump’s comments in Detroit and hints from another Chinese group, Geely, that it is preparing to enter the US market within the next three years have raised the spectre of Chinese manufacturers arriving in the US.

In a recent interview with Autoline Network, Ash Sutcliffe, head of global communications at Geely, which also owns Volvo Cars and Polestar, said: “The big question for us is when and where we will go to the USA.”

Sutcliffe declined to comment further to the FT but said the group continued to “monitor” potential opportunities in North America.

Ed Kim, president of consultancy AutoPacific, said Ford was particularly vulnerable to the entry of low-cost Chinese EVs into the US because it had already axed models in crucial mass-market segments in anticipation of an EV transition that has since stalled.

They include the compact crossover Ford Escape and the midsize Ford Edge SUVs, which have been discontinued. Ford has nothing to replace them with until at least 2027, when it plans to launch a new low-cost EV platform.

Texas A&M University is ending its women’s and gender studies program, changing the syllabuses of hundreds of courses and canceling six classes as part of a new policy that limits how professors can discuss some race and gender topics, school officials announced Friday.

The changes to and cancellation of courses comes months after a viral video of a student confronting an instructor over her lessons threw Texas A&M, one of the largest universities in the country, into upheaval.

University officials tried to reassure the campus that the impacts of the new policy would be minimal, affecting only a small portion of the classes being offered and that class cancellations wouldn’t create any obstacles preventing students from staying on course to graduate.

“Strong oversight and standards protect academic integrity and restore public trust, guaranteeing that a degree from Texas A&M means something to our students and the people who will hire them,” Interim President Tommy Williams said in a news release. “That has been our focus through this process and will remain our focus as we move forward.”

But faculty and students, hundreds of whom gathered on campus Thursday evening to protest the changes being made under the new policy, have accused Texas A&M of infringing on academic and student freedom.

“They have reduced this marketplace of ideas to now emphasizing or promoting a certain view when it comes to race, gender, and sexuality. And that view is quite literally erasing the experiences of people of color, the LGBTQ+ community,” said Leonard Bright, president of the American Association of University Professors A&M chapter.

Friday’s announcement followed an extensive review by the university of 5,400 courses after the Texas A&M University System regents in November had approved the new policy.

Texas A&M said the six courses that were canceled represent only 0.11% of the courses offered this semester. They include courses in the Bush School of Government and Public Service; the College of Arts and Sciences; the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences; and the College of Education and Human Development.

The university said faculty were given the chance to request exceptions for some courses. Out of the 54 courses that were sent to Williams, he granted 48 exceptions.

Texas A&M said the decision to end the women’s and gender studies program was based in part on limited student interest in the program.

A&M said Friday that Williams would not be available for media interviews.

“I recognize that recent Texas A&M University System policy changes have been unsettling for many, and I understand your concerns. At the same time, our shared responsibility is clear: our students,” Williams said in a statement on Jan. 12.

The new policy appears to be the first time that a public university system in Texas has put in rules on what faculty can talk about in their classroom on the topics of race and gender. Other university systems in Texas have also placed restrictions on classroom instruction or have begun internal reviews of course offerings following a new state law.

Bright, whose graduate-level ethics course was canceled under the new policy, said that despite the university’s reassurances, the changes on campus are creating an atmosphere of fear where faculty have been censoring themselves and what they teach in order to avoid any problems.

“They sent out a chilling message to the faculty that we were engaging in woke ideology, and … that people were gonna be fired as a result of teaching these topics that some conservatives certainly disagree with,” said Bright, who is a professor at Texas A&M’s Bush School of Government and Public Service.

At Thursday’s campus protest, Martin Peterson, a philosophy professor at Texas A&M, said that under the new policy, he wasn’t being allowed to teach certain writings from Plato.

“No one can reasonably say that the philosophy professor shouldn’t get to teach Plato in a philosophy class. But that’s what’s happening,” Peterson said.

Williams said earlier that Texas A&M was not banning Plato.

The new policy at Texas A&M came after September’s firing of Melissa McCoul, a senior lecturer in the English department at Texas A&M University, after video was made public in which she argued with a female student over gender identity being taught in a children’s literature class. McCoul’s firing came after political pressure from Republican lawmakers, including Gov. Greg Abbott.

Shortly after McCoul’s termination, Texas A&M’s then president, Mark A. Welsh III, resigned.

Republican state Rep. Brian Harrison, who has been critical of Texas A&M, on Friday applauded the decision to end its women’s and gender studies program.

“After years of pressure and exposing that department’s woke agenda, I’m proud to have delivered yet another massive conservative victory for Texas taxpayers against transgender indoctrination!” Harrison said in a post on the social media site X.

Texas A&M is located in College Station, about 95 miles (153 kilometers) northwest of Houston.

Big Food is slimming down.

As both consumers and regulators push back against ultra-processed foods, the companies that make them have been splitting up or divesting iconic brands. Last year, Unilever spun off its ice cream business into The Magnum Ice Cream Company. Kraft Heinz is preparing to break up later this year, undoing much of the merger forged more than a decade ago by Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway and private equity firm 3G Capital. And Keurig Dr Pepper is planning a similar split after it finishes its acquisition of JDE Peet’s.

In 2024, nearly half of mergers and acquisitions activity in the consumer products industry came from divestitures, according to consulting firm Bain. Over the next three years, 42% of M&A executives in the consumer products industry are preparing an asset for sale, a Bain survey found.

Of course, the trend isn’t confined to just the consumer packaged goods industry. Industrial companies like GE and Honeywell have pursued their own breakups in recent years. It’s happening too in legacy media; Comcast spun off many of its cable assets into CNBC owner Versant, while Warner Bros. Discovery is planning to spin off its cable networks later this year as Netflix acquires its streaming and studios division.

“In many of the spaces that we’re seeing this type of activity, there are many very fierce competitive pressures that are making it harder to operate,” said Emilie Feldman, a professor at The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.

The squeeze on packaged food and beverage companies comes from lower demand, which has led to shrinking volume for many of their products. To turn around their businesses and win back investors, they are counting on dumping underperforming brands.

February will bring both quarterly earnings reports and presentations at the annual CAGNY Conference, offering investors more opportunities to hear about food executives’ plans for their portfolios. Companies to watch include Kraft Heinz, which could share more details on its upcoming split, and Nestle, which is considering selling off multiple brands in its portfolio.

Shrinking sales

For more than a decade, consumers have been buying fewer groceries from the inner aisles of the grocery store, instead focusing on the outer aisles with fresh produce and protein. The pandemic served as the exception, as many consumers returned to the brands that they knew. However, price hikes and “shrinkflation” as life eased back to normal largely erased that shift in behavior.

More recently, regulators, emboldened by the “Make America Healthy Again” agenda espoused by Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., have put both more pressure and a bigger spotlight on processed foods. And the rise of GLP-1 drugs to combat diabetes and obesity have meant some of food companies’ key consumers have lost their appetite for the sweet and salty snacks that they used to eat.

As a percentage of overall spending, the consumer packaged goods industry has held onto its market share. But the biggest companies are losing customers to upstart brands or private-label products, according to Bain partner Peter Horsley.

On average, about 35% of large consumer products companies’ portfolios are in categories with more than 7% growth, Horsley said. For comparison, over half of private-label brands are in high-growth categories, like yogurt and functional beverages, and for insurgent brands, it’s even higher.

For Big Food, the result has been slowing — or even declining — sales, followed by stock declines. In some cases, activist investors push for companies to focus more on their core offerings and to offload so-called distractions.

“You’re seeing a lot of pressure from a valuation standpoint, especially for these publicly traded companies,” said Raj Konanahalli, partner and managing director of AlixPartners. “One way to reset expectations is to really kind of focus more on the core offerings and dispose or divest the slower, capital-intensive or non-core businesses.”

While getting bigger helped food companies develop scale, enter new markets and grow their sales, it also made their businesses much more complex, according to Konanahalli. Become too big, and it becomes too difficult to make decisions quickly or to decide how and where to invest back into the business.

To be sure, some of these divestitures and breakups follow deals that seem to have been ill-advised from the start. Look no further than the merger of Keurig Green Mountain and Dr Pepper Snapple Group in 2018, to form Keurig Dr Pepper.

“Frankly the surprise to us was the decision back in 2018 when Keurig Green Mountain acquired the Dr Pepper Snapple Group in an $18.7 billion deal to create Keurig Dr Pepper in the first place,” Barclays analysts Patrick Folan and Lauren Lieberman wrote in a note to clients in August when the breakup was announced. “At the time, it was seen as both odd and a very left field deal with the questionable logic of combining coffee and [carbonated soft drinks].”

(When the merger was announced in 2018, Lieberman said on a conference call with executives from both companies that she was still “scratching my head” about the logic of the deal for both players).

Shares of Keurig Dr Pepper have risen 37% since the merger. The S&P 500 has climbed 150% over the same period.

To sell or not to sell

Like many industries, the packaged food industry has gone through cycles of expansion and contraction, according to Feldman. For example, Kraft spun off a snacking business that includes Oreos into Mondelez in 2012, just three years before it merged with Heinz.

However, in recent years, expanding through acquisitions has required more sophisticated thinking and execution.

“If you go back to those glory years of pre-2015, the rules of the game in consumer products felt fairly simple, at least if you’re a global company,” Bain’s Horsley said. “You bought another company that was relatively similar to you. You integrated it together, you pulled out the cost synergies … and then that gave you good top-line and bottom-line growth. But the rules of the game have changed.”

Around 2015, upstarts like Chobani or BodyArmor began stealing market share from legacy brands. As a result, food giants needed to become more thoughtful about what they were acquiring and how they were managing their portfolios, according to Horsley.

For a cautionary tale, look no further than Kraft Heinz, formed by a mega-merger in 2015. Investors initially cheered the deal, but their enthusiasm waned as the combined company’s U.S. sales began lagging. Then came write-downs of many of its iconic brands, like Kraft, Oscar Mayer, Maxwell House and Velveeta, in addition to a subpoena from the Securities and Exchange Commission related to its accounting policies and internal controls.

With the benefit of hindsight, analysts and investors have blamed much of Kraft Heinz’s downward spiral on the brutal cost-cutting strategy imposed after the merger. The company’s leadership was too focused on slashing costs and not enough on investing back into its brands, particularly at a time when consumer tastes were changing.

Since Kraft Heinz began trading as one company, shares have tumbled 73%.

But not everyone is sold that getting rid of underperforming brands will benefit shareholders.

“If you don’t fix the underlying capability, it doesn’t matter how many brands you sell or don’t sell,” RBC Capital Markets analyst Nik Modi said. “They’re not addressing the root problem. It’s just something to make investors happy because it seems like they’re making a change.”

One breakup that Modi agrees with is that of Kellogg, which split into the snacks-focused Kellanova and cereal-centric WK Kellogg in 2023. Last year, chocolatier Ferrero snapped up WK Kellogg for $3.1 billion, while Mars closed its $36 billion acquisition of Kellanova.

From Modi’s perspective, the breakup created more value for shareholders than the combined business did. Kellogg’s high-growth snack business was much more viable as an acquisition target without the sluggish cereal division attached. Plus, the two strategic buyers are both privately held companies that don’t have to worry about sharing quarterly earnings with the public.

Some investors are hoping for the same outcome with Kraft Heinz.

“The view that many have had is the best way to create value is split the companies and hope that you can create a Kellanova 2.0 where both entities get acquired at some point down the line, and that’s where value creation happens,” said Peter Galbo, analyst at Bank of America Securities.

Kraft Heinz hired Steve Cahillane, the former CEO of Kellogg and then Kellanova, as its chief executive. Once the company separates, Cahillane will serve as chief executive of Global Taste Elevation, the placeholder name for the spinoff with high-growth brands like Heinz and Philadelphia.

But acquiring either company resulting from the Kraft Heinz split would be a pretty big acquisition, making it less likely that either is snapped up, according to Galbo. And the resulting uncertainty about the value creation from the breakup is maybe why Berkshire Hathaway, the company’s largest shareholder, is preparing to exit its 27.5% stake in Kraft Heinz.

Food divestitures pick up

A month into the new year, it’s unlikely that the divestiture trend will slow down.

On Tuesday, General Mills announced that it is selling its Muir Glen brand of organic tomatoes to focus on its core brands. And last week, Bloomberg reported that Nestle is preparing the sale of its water unit; the Swiss giant is also reportedly considering offloading upscale coffee brand Blue Bottle and its underperforming vitamin brands.

And if Big Food is making any acquisitions, the deals are more likely to involve “insurgent brands,” according to Bain. Over the last five years, acquisitions with a value of less than $2 billion represented 38% of total consumer products deals, up from 16% in the period from 2014 to 2019, the firm said. For example, last year, PepsiCo bought prebiotic soda brand Poppi for $1.95 billion and Hershey snapped up LesserEvil popcorn for $750 million.

Bigger deals are harder to come by because of the current regulatory environment, Konanahalli said. Buyers might not be strategic players, but instead private equity firms with plenty of cash on hand. For example, in January, L Catterton bought a majority stake in cottage cheese upstart Good Culture.

But a flashy divestiture or acquisition might not be the solution to a food conglomerate’s woes — or a surefire way to lift the stock price. Sometimes, good old-fashioned elbow grease can work even better.

“Just because it seems like the wind is blowing your way, it doesn’t mean that you can’t put in some hard work and turn things around,” AlixPartners’ Konanahalli said.

After multiple arrests, Florida officials are ramping up a criminal investigation of a marijuana multistate operator-funded adult-use cannabis legalization campaign even further – just days ahead of a key deadline to qualify the measure for the November ballot.

The criminal probe into the Smart & Safe Florida campaign, funded by Tallahassee-based Trulieve Cannabis Corp., shows the administration of Gov. Ron DeSantis, a sworn enemy of cannabis reform, is “using every means necessary to stifle the voices of over a million Florida voters,” a campaign spokesperson told MJBizDaily.

Florida is the largest medical-only cannabis market in the U.S. and represents a massive opportunity for the legal industry.

But DeSantis’ administration has opposed adult-use marijuana legalization every step of the way.

Marijuana MSO Trulieve’s $200 million spending on marijuana legalization

Trulieve spent more than $150 million on a 2024 legalization effort that came up short despite an endorsement from Donald Trump, then the Republican nominee for president.

In this cycle, DeSantis’ administration has deployed both lawsuits as well as what Politico called an “elections police,” created under a law passed last year, to thwart a second effort.

Campaign finance records show Trulieve has contributed $52.5 million to an effort to gather at least 880,000 signatures from registered voters by a Feb. 1 deadline.

Florida deploys ‘elections police’ to halt marijuana legalization

On Jan. 20, state Attorney General James Uthmeier, DeSantis’ former chief of staff, said that almost a dozen canvassers had been arrested on suspicion of fraud, with more to follow.

On Thursday, days before the Feb. 1 deadline, Uthmeier expanded the fraud probe to every Florida county, the Tampa Bay Times reported.

In a social media post, Uthmeier claimed that “Smart & Safe Florida’s petition fraud touches nearly all of Florida’s 67 counties, and we’ve expanded our investigation statewide.”

As of Friday, Smart & Safe had collected 760,000 signatures, 120,000 short of the required number, according to the state elections website.

Florida officials ‘will stop at nothing’ to thwart cannabis reform

In a statement to MJBizDaily, a Smart & Safe spokesperson said that the campaign followed the law.

“Consistent with Florida law, each and every time we found any sort of discrepancy from state-certified petition gatherers, we reported our suspicions to the Secretary of State,” the statement read.

“In short, it appears the Attorney General is taking issue with the fact that we explicitly follow the law.

“From the months-long delay in sending the ballot language to the court to the after-the-fact nullifying of valid petitions, it seems there is nothing that will stop the administration from preventing these voters from having their say.”
