In this Podcast Extra interview, Pro Tools Expert Technical Editor James Ivey talks to Producer, Mixing & Mastering Engineer Dax Liniere at his Puzzle Factory Sound Studio in North London that was recently built.

Australian Dax is clearly able to turn his hand to most things of a creative nature and the Puzzle Factory is clearly no exception. The fit and finish of this, believe it or not, self-built studio is stunning. The attention to detail in this studio is off the chart. Where Dax has not built a rack or desk or diffuser himself, he has had it custom made for this amazing facility.

In the interview, James and Dax talk about how he came to work in music and audio and how this lead to his move to the UK along with time spent at Studio La Fabrique in the South of France at Mix With The Masters.

Alan's Response: it very much depends on the exact model number of your MSI motherboard. If it has USB3.1, then you might be able to get a Thunderbolt breakout card. I say might, as it totally depends on the motherboard. Then also you’ll probably have to update the BIOS and fix the settings accordingly. So, it’s not impossible to retrofit Thunderbolt to a motherboard, but the devil very much is in the detail. You need to look to see if your motherboard has a Thunderbolt Header, plus also check that your i7 is new enough to natively support Thunderbolt. If you go into your BIOS, is there an option for Thunderbolt among the menu. If your motherboard does not support TB, but your i7 does, then all is not lost. The beauty of self builds is that you could easily and cost-effectively upgrade your motherboard to one that does support Thunderbolt and even might have a Thunderbolt port on the rear IO panel, saving you from having to get a break-out card. If you can only get a Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) board, then don’t worry - the Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 adapters work a treat.

In this Podcast Extra Interview, Technical Editor, James Ivey chats with Matt Boudreau, host of the Working Class Audio podcast.

Matt has been involved in music for 33 years. First as a drummer then moving behind the class as a mixing engineer, recording engineer and producer.
Matt Boudreau grew up in Southern New Mexico, moving to San Francisco in the late 80’s. As a drummer, he experienced some success with his first two bands, The Sextants, then Seven Day Diary, touring all over Europe and the United States. this exposed him making records on a high level with producer/engineers Larry Hirsch (Los Lobos, John Hiatt, Bonnie Raitt), Joe Chicarelli (Frank Zappa, Tori Amos, American Music Club, White Stripes) and Gil Norton (Echo and the Bunnymen, Foo Fighters, Counting Crows). These are the guys who got him excited about the record making process.
In 1994 Matt took to the other side of the glass. That journey has taken him through a series of fantastic recording experiences. Working with a combination of artists, some you will know, as well as many who you may not.
Now Matt uses his experience of record making and drumming daily in the creation of content for the Working Class Audio website and the interviews he records with the great and the good who continue to make their living at the coal face of the music and recordings industries.

Mike - Pro Tools 2018 - i feel that Avid has turned a corner with this release. Although most of the features are for music, it is clear that Avid are working hard improving workflows and making it easier to be creative and not to get bogged down in the tech. That has to be a good thing in my book.
Alan - The Dolby Atmos Production Suite. Been getting to grips with this the last few days and the more I delve into it, the more impressed I am, not just with the Dolby software, but also with the integration of immersive audio into Pro Tools 2018. A relatively small price tag of £240 literally unlocks a whole extra dimension. I thoroughly recommend it for anyone wanting to explore the world of immersive audio.
