Some people have asked how I got the interview to Apple in the first place that lead to being hired at Apple HQ. I applied online several times and got never got anything back and I saw there was a job fair down in California. So I actually flew down to the job fair. The first day when I got there what they told me was to apply on the website, which I had already done several times. After that I was obviously discouraged, but the job fair was two days. And so I came back the second day and really sold myself and after I talked to the person. I said, you know, I’ve been come all this way and then I gave them the same resume and applied on the website and got no response with. With that same resume they looked at it and said this is exactly what we’re looking for.

So I actually got the job interview that week before I returned to California. They also hired me before I left the campus. So it worked out really well and I guess the lesson is be persistent.

I used to work at Apple headquarters in Cupertino, California. Sometimes I get asked about the interview process I experienced. So, it happened in the same building I ended up working in, IL-3, which is shown below. The interview happened basically in one room and they had people come in and out. It was eight hour interview with a break for lunch. They asked all kinds of different questions and all kinds of different topics. They were really testing my Electrical Engineering and Computer Science knowledge. The most intense part of the interview, they had me doing an Electrical Engineering problem on paper while they asked me unrelated verbal questions and they were also basically timing to see how long it took me to finish the Electrical Engineering written question. So yeah, it was intense, but I did very well on the interview and they did offer me the job before I left the Apple campus. So obviously they were satisfied with the interview process.

Technical debt is code that needs to be written or refactored but we’re not doing it because we’re focused on something else. Maybe it’s development in new features for example. And so the technical debt will accumulate over time. If you don’t pay this technical debt by doing the refactoring, over time, what’s going to happen is when you build new things, you’re going to have to pay what’s called interest on that technical debt. The new features are going to take longer to build because you never dealt with cleaning up that code. Over time, the interest that you need to pay to develop a new feature or something will continue to go up and up and up. Eventually it can kill a project I have seen it happen. So you need to take care of your technical debt at some point. If you don’t, it will accumulate and eventually can lead to much higher costs of development and failure of the project.

So scalable businesses one where the unit cost to build extra units of your product is almost zero. So a perfect example of that is with Microsoft when they built, for example, Windows 95. So that build that very first unit, it cost millions and millions of dollars to get that first version and put it on that first CD. But then after that, when you’re doing the next CD and even the next million CDs, the marginal cost is almost zero and it plummets very rapidly. So that first unit cost a lot of money and then after that it goes down very quickly. And certainly today with downloads and this type of thing, the marginal cost of an additional download is almost zero. So you build a business that’s extremely scalable because you can sell millions and millions of units and almost no marginal cost after that first unit. And so you can scale the business very rapidly and yes, you have things like marketing costs, but it’s the unit cost per product that really matters in terms of a scalable business. Now, there’s companies out there like Skip the Dishes and DoorDash that try to scale in the same way but they aren’t really the same at all. So with DoorDash, for example, they have to deliver that meal and let’s say there’s a problem along the way. The car breaks down or whatever. This is called the last mile problem. They aren’t able to deliver. So not only is the customer unhappy that they didn’t get their product, you probably have to give them a refund and maybe even credits and so you’ve actually lost money on that sale. Or maybe you have a bad actor that’s doing your delivery and who knows what’s going to happen there. So these are all part of the last mile problem that Microsoft didn’t experience because they don’t have to worry about that. Yeah, the CD has to get to the store or the download has to work whatever, but it’s a very different problem from having to deliver food on time and get it right every time. These are scalable businesses in very different ways. And I would say that the Microsoft way is much, much more scalable than what DoorDash is doing because they have that last mile problem. And so that’s the type of business that if you can do it, you want to build those kind of scalable businesses that don’t have the Last mile problem.

AI has radically changed over the last 20 years. So if you look at when Kasparov was playing against Deep Blue in the 1990s. Which was the best AI we could do for chess at the time, basically what the computer was doing was look ahead. So if I go ahead a few moves, what does the new state of the board look like, and then try to evaluate if this is a better position. The new AI is completely different. What it is, is they just have millions and millions of boards that they’ve seen from grandmasters for example, and it’s basically pattern recognition. So I’ve seen this state of the board say 50 times it’s exact board position, and if white makes this move, then they win most of the time. Thus, I’ll make the move that causes white to win most of the time. So it’s probabilistic after you’ve done the pattern matching on the board. So in many ways, the old way was more like how humans thought, But now it’s just pattern recognition, but this is a much stronger. What it requires is millions of examples of data to learn from but if it can get that and get all the information then it is far stronger.

When you’re building the first version of your product, you want to build what’s called the minimum viable product or MVP. The minimum viable product has in it the minimum list of features that your customer needs to solve their problem in a useful way. Now, the purpose of the MVP is to get your product out there and get it first acquainted with your users and to get feedback. Once it’s out there, you’re going to get a bunch of feedback that you didn’t anticipate. That’s basically the purpose. You are going to be like, wow, I didn’t expect that feedback. And there will always be feedback that you didn’t expect coming out of it. And that is the purpose of the MVP is to give you everything you need for a minimum price in terms of feedback. So you know what to build in version 2 and you don’t spend extra money building things or building them wrong in version 1.

One thing to think of when you’re ready to deploy to live. You should never deploy before a day when you won’t have your team available in case there’s any issues. And so, for example, you would never want to deploy on a Friday of a normal week if your team isn’t available on the weekend. Similarly, if there’s any holiday or something, you don’t want to deploy before a holiday. There should always be a working day the day after your deploy. Because things may occur even though you’ve tested everything thoroughly. There may be things that are unanticipated and you don’t want to be without your development resources to fix issues when the new release out there. So generally speaking the rule is don’t deploy before a holiday.

When you’re building a product, you want to make customer choice easy. As an example. When Steve Jobs returned to Apple. He found that there were many different types of computers, all different models very similar to each other. He actually sat down with the teams and asked, what’s the difference between these different computers? Turns out, there wasn’t a lot of difference between them, and there were just so many different models. Sometimes all it was is just the memory was different. He said, this is terrible. Consumers can’t figure out what to choose. We need to simply it. He said we are just going to have a grid with four quadrants. It’s going to be very simple. You’re going to have consumers on one side, professional on the other. And so for consumers, there’s going to be a high in low, and then for professionals, there’s going to be a high and low. That is it. It really simplified the buying experience.

One of my strongest skills is debugging and not just debugging with debugging of hard problems. Let’s define a hard problem. A hard problem is one that you spend, say, 20 to 30 minutes on, and you haven’t solved it yet. And as you know, if you do that, it can easily turn into hours. So what I do that makes me very good at this is after that 20 minutes of spent debugging, I stop what I’m doing. And don’t use the normal techniques anymore. What I do is take a step back and say, the behavior that I’m seeing is going to be a rational, logical reason that’s causing this behavior. The bug will be caused by a rational, logical reason it always is. Then I say what logical, rational thing would cause the behavior I am seeing? And if you look for that, you will often find the bug.

One thing you want to watch out for if you’re going to try to buy a phone on say Kjiji or on Facebook Marketplace. Phones can be blacklisted now. Blacklisted, it can be a stolen phone, but more often what’s happened is that the person got the phone on a plan and then eventually didn’t pay the bill. Then the cell phone carrier, say Rogers will blacklist the phone. When a phone is blacklisted, it can only be used on Wi-Fi. It can’t be used with a SIM card anymore, regardless of carrier. And since most people when they buy a phone, they’re trying to use it as a phone not just on Wi-Fi. You got to be careful about this. So when you are looking to buy a phone, there are websites like this one that will allow you to check if the phone is blacklisted or not.
