Revived "jagger spun" style warp

Taos Wools started carrying a revived version of the Jagger Spun wool warp.

https://taoswools.com/collections/warp

according to Joe Barry: “….Below is our new Rug Warp which is now offered in 3-ply and 4-ply as well as the tried and true 2-ply. This is spun by the folks who used to spin for Jagger Bros. It is a great warp for high tension looms.”

Rug weaving

I am interested in beginning rug weaving. I am looking at two different looms; the Arras from Schacht and the Dovetail Navajo loom. I am wondering if the Navajo type loom is better for rugs or is the versatility of the Arras better? Any other suggestions for a loom would be appreciated.

Tapestry inset + general ?s: headers, continuous weft, etc

I took my first tapestry workshop last month and have some additional questions that have arisen as I’ve continued to read & watch more. My goal is to make small woven purses My loom (Mirrix Big Sister) is already warped 4 inches wide and I only wove a few inches in class, so rather than cut it off and start over, I’ve decided I’d like to weave a few small square pieces that I can then frame with fabric borders for my purses. It’ll save me a TON of weaving time & I can also polish my skills with much much smaller projects so it’s win-win. I’m excited to wind my yarn and get started! Now that you have the background, here’s what I haven’t quite figured out:

I have an ordering cord tied on my loom. The instructor never said to untie it before advancing the warp so I I never did. It sounds like I to want to untie that now? Will I tie another ordering cord before each piece I start on this warp or was that just for initial spacing?

I keep seeing different options for headers in different places (my class, Rebecca Mezoff videos & her book, projects on the Mirrix blog). I tied half hitch knots on my simple frame loom recently and I’d love to choose a method that doesn’t involve them if possible! Given that I’m going to be sewing the header to cotton fabric to make these bags, is there a particular header style that’s a better choice? I’m looking at the instructions for the Mirrix Ellen purse and that uses a row of soumak + several rows of warp as weft. That seems easy to me & I’d love to just do that!

Continuous weft: I have read in multiple places that you never want your weft to be continuous because it’ll mess up your tension. Even if you’re weaving stripes of solid colors, you should use multiple butterflies. Is this true even on a piece that’s only 4 in wide? Also, what about pick and pick? I’m looking at Mezoff’s book right now and she only has one butterfly for each color. Is this an exception? I know I get too hung up on trying to learn the “rules” for hobbies and I suspect that’s happening here, but I’d love clarification on when it’s actually okay to just use one butterfly across the whole width of the piece and when it’s likely to cause issues.

Undulating lines: I would love to weave undulating bands of color and I can’t figure out how to do it, nor can I figure out what to search to find it! I feel like I must be overcomplicating this. I stumbled upon eccentric weft and that seemed to be the closest to what I’m going for. Maybe I’d find it easiest if I wove one ripple at a time (I’m assuming a different butterfly for each mound?) and then filled it in? I have a REALLY hard time with spatial reasoning so that’s making this extra tricky. My tapestry class included plenty of instructions for weaving curves but that seems more complicated than what I’m trying to do. I’m not trying to make specific shapes; I just want to play with colors and not have a bunch of sharp edges and straight lines.

I greatly appreciate the help!! I’m sure a lot of this is a matter of personal preference and I’ll figure it out with experience but some nudges would be much appreciated. Thank you!

Practical uses for tapestry?

I tend to weave on my floor loom or rigid heddle more than on my tapestry looms, but my mom recently got a large tapestry loom and is looking for practical projects.

She’s new to weaving, and she got it thinking that she’d be making garments and the like with it. I had to explain that a more balanced weave on a rigid heddle or floor loom lends itself more to that type of application.

Now she’s looking for practical projects that she can make with it (not wall hangings). I suggested rugs, pillows, or bags; but I’m hard pressed to think of much beyond that.

Does anyone have any suggestions for a good use for tapestry woven cloth?

Help ID this loom

Hi, new tapestry weaver here and I just picked up this loom today. It looks like a Crisp Ruthie from other pictures I’ve seen, but the dimensions seem off.

The measurement inside the shafts is 49.5”. Plus, there’s only one set of treadles. All the other pictures I’ve seen show 3 sets of treadles and say the Ruthie is a 60” weaving width.

I had to take it apart to move it, and it’s still in pieces, but I didn’t see any name or iD anywhere on it. It is heavy and quite sturdy. The previous owner said it was solid cherry.

Does anyone recognize this loom?

Anyone here taking this Rebecca Mezoff’s online course? What is your experience level?

I still consider myself a learner, advanced beginner to intermediate maybe?

I have taken a few of her online classes and was lucky enough to be in her class at Harrisville Designs last June. She is exactly in person as she is online. Lovely and so helpful.

Without giving away the entire class here, what things are you looking to learn?

For me is just getting a spark of an idea. I often struggle with what to do next, like looking at a blank piece of paper.

I am hoping the prompts and a bit of discussion will push me a bit.

Schacht Arras vs Mirrix

I have been looking for Arras tapestry loom reviews as compared to the Mirrix looms.

I have 5 Mirrix looms and love them for ease in warping and weaving as well as the very tight tension they can withstand.

How do they compare with the Schacht Arras loom? I love the ability to add the back beams, the stand and treadle to the Arras. I have the Mirrix stand but most often use the looms on my work table.

Does the Arras hold very tight tension? Is it as easy to warp as the Mirrix? How do the treadle and stand accessories stack up in actual use?

Thanks for your thoughts.

I’ve been using one of the narrower sticks (with holes in) as a shed stick, but is this it’s correct purpose?

I just brought home a 54” Shannock tapestry loom. It is from 1986 number 49. There is little or no info online about how to configure the various beams. I think it is not quite rigged correctly from what I can tell by photos of them on line.

If you have a Shannock with 2 sets of treadles and still have the diagramatics on how to assemble it, please let me know if you could send this to me.

Appreciate any help available! I’m so excited to get going on this beauty!

Loom Question

Last night a student brought in a couple of pictures of a loom she had been given. She though it was a rigid heddle, but it doesn’t look like one I’m familiar with. Could this be a tapestry loom? What kind? Thank you for the help identifying it.

Where can I find metal rods like these?

I’ve been reading about weaving on the small Mirrix looms with a no warp ends kit. I have the texsolv, and I read somewhere about using paperclips for finer warp. But I don’t know where to source metal rods like these.

I am in the US, in a fairly rural area. No specialty hardware stores around here. So online is best, are there certain hobbyists that might use these? And I feel like I should say I support Mirrix looms, own several with all kinds of accessories from them. It just seems like I can’t justify the cost of the kit when I just need the bar.

Way back in 2010 Mirrix launched a program called “Social Market for a Mirrix.” We gave away looms to a few people in exchange for blog posts about their experiences with the looms. It was a huge success and really the beginning of the online community Mirrix has fostered since.

We’ve had many variations of this program in subsequent years and today we are officially accepting applications for our 2024/2025 Mirrix Looms Ambassador Program. We will be giving away two loom packages in exchange for posts on our blog and on social media.
