Differences in the Zerg Swarm

Hey everyone, I was wondering if there were any lore and unit differences in the Zerg Swarm as a whole between the three different leaders of the Swarm. The Overmind, The Queen of Blades Sarah Kerrigan, and the Overqueen Zagara? I know Kerrigan got rid of the cerebrates of the Overmind and introduced the broodmothers to take their place, but I was wondering if there was anything else that changed.

Why the Researched Gateway Build Time Buff Doesn't Work

Army strength is bottlenecked by two factors: time and resources. The time to produce the tech tree, produce the production building, sit in the queue behind other units, make the unit, cross the map. The resources to build the production building and make the unit.

In the early game the main bottleneck is time. Time to first zealot, time to first adept, time to first warp-in dictate the balance of early game rushes. Timing buffs at this stage are huge.

After the early game the bottleneck shifts to resources. If you have more resources, you can make more production buildings, removing much of the time bottleneck.

By the time you finish warpgate research, the bottleneck has shifted from time to resources. 35% faster build time doesn't mean you get 35% more units. It just means you need 1-2 less gateways, saving a flat 150-300 minerals. And for that flat savings you are rewarded with: Have 16 supply and 1000/200 resources always locked up in 8 active gateways, with an additional 25s delay to entire the fight, and no ability to reactively change your composition. It is a terrible trade.

To make no-warpgate style viable, we need to either make gateway units stronger and warpgates much more expensive, or to make gateway units cheaper when built from the gateway. 'Build time' is not an axis where gateways will beat out warpgates. Only through cheaper cost can a sustained gateway style make sense, because that hits the actual bottleneck and translates to a larger army.

New Player looking for Advice

Hi, I’ve been wanting to get into StarCraft 1, but it’s really challenging trying to remember all of the shortcuts and learning what infrastructure allows x troop or how the troops synergize together or any sort of basic macro. I’m Okayish at the micro sort of since I’m familiar with the movement somewhat (I’m masters in League if that translates at all) although I do struggle with camera positioning. Honestly I’m just terrible at every aspect that I can think of and probably more idek exist. Is there any resource to try to explain all of the basic basics? I’ve tried to look up some guides but they’re either too advanced for a complete beginner or they’re StarCraft 2 related. Thanks for the help

Snipe, Lockdown & Hunter Seeker

In terms of the Ghost I think we finally have the opportunity to bring the "Snipe" experiment to a close.

The ghost does so much base damage in PTR with additional range, it's going to be hard to justify them having a *Do more damage* ability when they are already by default doing far *more damage*

Maybe it's time to bring back Lockdown, which is effectively the Raven's 'interference matrix'

So that asks for an ability trade.

But what is the equivalent of Snipe for Ravens?

Hunter Seeker Missile.

This ability with a little adjustments can fullfill the role of snipe.

The issue with old hunter seeker is that it just created this lame run away mechanic, where the Missile wasnt fast enough to catch most retreating targets, before either dudding or immediately exploding on impact.

How about this was changed to:

1) Fast Missile

2) Delayed AoE explosion after impact. Offering the opponent a few moments to split the impacted unit.

Cerebrial Bore:

The Hunter Seeker missile on impact, burrows into the target (like a widow mine) and begins a timer

On detonation it's damage is similar to vanilla Wings of Liberty HsM.

Stats:

Hunter Seeker Speed:

7.14 : 20% faster than a Pheonix

100 damage 2.4 radius

Ghost Lockdown:

Ability trade with Raven, Interference Matrix.

After 4 years after playing for the last time, me and my buddy finished our 5 placement matches and landed at Master Tier III.

Like, I don't think we're bad (we're not that good either, peaked at diamond 1/low master last time we played), but I was surprised to be finish there.

What are your experiences on those matches?

Dehaka's perspective on Terrans is so interesting

In Heart of the Swarm, you visit a Dominion station building hybrids, and have this exchange:

DEHAKA: This place of metal and stone. Why?
KERRIGAN: You're not impressed? The Primal Zerg could never have built something like this.
DEHAKA: I do not need a wall. I will evolve armor. I do not need a weapon. I will evolve claws.
KERRIGAN: The tool makers may create something stronger than your armor and claws.
Dehaka: The tool makers stay the same. I evolve. I change.

This is such an obscenely interesting scene because it shows Dehaka encountering something so outside the context of everything he's ever known that he can't even grapple with it. He literally cannot comprehend the idea of somebody inventing a device that is stronger than what came before it. It's not essence, It's not plucked from something living, so how could it possibly be stronger than him? How can it change? Terrans are unique in that they (generally) don't have psychic abilities or powers behind what they do. Everything they are is created by their two hands and ingenuity. And Dehaka just can't process that.

Zerg Wallet

Recently, I posted my wallet with the Overmind on the one side, the whole time it had the Zerg logo on the other but it was worn and slacked on touching it up. So here it is! I made it look a lot cleaner this time around and added/changed the text around, I am aware I am missing 2 prongs on the logo but hey it still turned out well and is recognizable!

I do have to touch up the Overmind now too, this pleather really doesnt hold on to acrylics well, but I got the expensive Black/White paint markers this time (uni POSCA) so I'm curious if they will hold up better. It was just a $5 wallet (kind of a steal with the chain) so if it gets tattered just adds to it imo. One uni POSCA marker costs more than the wallet did, haha!

I don't mind doing this once in a while, but anyone got tips for longevity? I have fabric markers which are permanent on leather, but have no idea how they will respond to pleather.

Almost Every Single Build on the Current PTR Is Broken.

Currently there are two very clear and one debatable bug affecting every single game played on the PTR. This is not an exaggeration.

It is very hard to have a real discussion or clear analysis of the 8 worker start when every single build is currently incorrect.

It has been a full week, multiple (smaller) tournaments have been played and there has been no hotfix or communication.

----------

TL;DR - Literally every single matchup and build order is significantly altered by unfixed bugs on the PTR. It makes it nearly impossible and maybe actively misleading to discuss ‘early’ interactions when:
- Terran Has Free +2 Supply from Orbital Command
- Nexus Has -1 Supply (including the start of the game)
- The Overlord is 17% slower than WoL (with 6 worker start)

In a game decided by seconds where we are literally trying to decide the entire early game economy, these seem to be truly important, game breaking things that completely skew the discussion.

I feel the gravity of these is being ignored in less grounded discussions about the worker count changes and specific unit changes - especially since most pros are currently playing in tournaments NOT on the new patch because of Blizzard's poor timing in the PTR release.

The three bugs (easily verifiable and shown even in pro games played so far, though one is debatable).

The Orbital Command immediately gives a free +2 Supply.
- Not when it finishes, the moment it moves from Command Center to Orbital Command your supply count goes up by 2. This means Terran goes from 16 or 17/21 to 16/23 supply. You can easily get your Reaper, a Marine, a 2nd CC and a Factory all before needing an additional Supply Depot.
The Nexus provides only 12 Supply. The patch notes state 13.
- Literally at the start of the game you have less supply before you need your first Pylon and less headroom for early game units. How did this make it through?
The Overlord is 0.7 speed. This is SLOWER than Wings of Liberty's 6 worker start.
- This is the debatable point since the patch notes state that it is the intended speed. It now takes around at least 2.5 (sometimes 3 on some maps) minutes to reach the vision range of the opponents natural. This is well after a Marine can be finished and out on the map after a Reaper, and even a Stalker can be completed easily (though usually with Core before Nexus).
- A quick comparison to WOL/HOTS (6 worker start). The Overlord was .586 speed, which multiplied by 1.4x (the Starcraft to Real-Time conversion added in LOTV) comes to .82 speed base. This means the original ‘old’ Overlord with a lower worker start is 17% faster than the current Overlord with 8 workers, giving Zerg significantly less scouting at an even later time. And that was before things like “Adepts” existed.
- Should the Overlord be even slower than they were during a 6 worker start on mostly smaller maps with less mobile units? That should be the discussion, since it is at least working as intended according to the patch notes.

The Race to the Bottom

One thing I wish there was more discussion on, amidst all this PTR talk and the attendant balance whining, are the things we’ve lost in the game. Units for every faction are simply less lethal than they once were.

The Toy Problem

“mommy, daddy, if I’m not allowed to play with X (insert favorite toy here: Pacifiers for Terran, bicycle with training wheels for Protoss, Kerrigan-themed butt plugs for Zerg) then billy shouldn’t be able to play with Y.”

I can give more examples for Terran and Protoss because those are the races I have played the most.

—Protoss cry about widow mine drop, mines get a quad nerf

—Terrans moan about disrupters, 3 or 4 nerfs

—Protoss bitch about EMP, enhanced shockwaves removed and radius decreased multiple times

—Terrans start squealing about storm (energy recharge patch), bye bye killer storm—less DPS less range

It’s a race to the bottom, folks. Give it another five years and we will be tickling each other with workers every game.

Some other examples for Zerg:

Banelings used to 1 shot probes with +2
Ultras used to be smaller
Queens were cheaper and could transfuse off creep.
Serral got fungal nerfed cause Maru couldn’t find his infestors

You get the point. Everything generally sucks compared to its former version. And my question is why can we never talk about buffing more stuff instead of nerfing more stuff.

I actually really liked mass warp gate. I could hold down a button and create an entire army in their base. I loved it when you couldn’t break the leash on snipe if you used scan.

I giggled with delight when I loaded up a prism with old storm templar and dropped it on a bunch of unsuspecting hydras or marines. Slowly but surely we are taking all the fun stuff away.

TURN THE SHIP AROUND!!!

I believe the perception of staleness in Sc2 is directly related to this trend of nerfing stuff for a few reasons:

It creates predictable games—the lack of explosive interactions means early game advantages become more certain to result in an eventual victory
That means fewer comebacks. By far the most exciting games to play and watch are when you find yourself in a rough position and manage to claw your way back to victory
Trades and exchanges become less decisive for either side. That means fewer big victories and fewer crushing defeats.

Everything becomes more and more…meh.

Where do we go from here?

Stop nerfing every race man. Give the people their cool units and abilities back even in their most imba form. Yes it makes the game more frustrating but it also makes the game more exciting.
