My StarCraft story from the early 2000s

My brothers and I drove from Philly to Pittsburgh for a World Cyber Games qualifier.

Our first and only in-person tournament.

It wasn’t glamorous.

A small, dim conference room. A handful of PCs.

This was early esports.

There were nine people there.

I was the third oldest brother, which meant I used the computer third most.

Which meant I was the third worst member of my family in StarCraft.

My oldest brother tells me: “NewbieMcNasty is here.” I knew the name, it’s an alias you don’t forget.. Had seen him in the channel “clan x17”. On battlereports dot com.

A real name in the scene. Possibly a U.S. national champion on some tour although this is such an ancient story I can not verify his accomplishments with google. Had won thousands of dollars playing the game, which was no small feat in the early 2000s.

He looked 18 to 22.

I was 12.

He walked up to me before the tournament started.

“Warm up game?”

Sure.

We load into a lobby.

He picks Terran. I hate Terran.

I play Zerg.

I think through my options.

Zergling rush?

Too cheesy for a warmup.

Fast expand?

No chance I outmacro someone at his level. I was never very good at remembering to build workers at the rate I needed to.

Speedlings into mutas?

Standard. But he’ll outmicro me.

So I pick something else.

Two-hatch hydra rush.

With range.

Not speed.

Everyone goes speed for mobility.

But range wins fights. It’s underrated against marines.

With a pack of 8 hydras you can kill several marines before they even have a chance to fire. It heavily influences the outcome of the fight.

I build.

2 Hatches.

Hydras.

Range upgrade.

Seven or eight hydras move across the map.

We meet half way.

Marines. Medics. He’s coming for me.

He stims.

“Tsahh yeahh.”

Half his army disappears before he knows it.

He didn’t expect the range.

No one does.

He retreats what’s left of his army.

I run towards his base. No wall off on this map. I pick off some more units. Head toward the mineral line. He makes a last ditch effort, combining all his scvs and marines to attack my hydras.

I’m winning.

Supply depots on fire.

He respectfully types:

“gg”

And quits.

We chat face to face after and all I can remember him saying is:

“Wicked hydra rush.”

You’re god damn right it was.

He went on to qualify for the World Cyber Games finals and took 3rd place nationally in 2003.

I never won a single other match, I lost quickly in the qualifiers. It remains my singular StarCraft accomplishment.

Good times.

Call me crazy, but I think I’d like to see a large-scale StarCraft RTS in the vein of Wargame/Warno/Broken Arrow

I realize what I’m about to say might be considered heresy in these parts, but what the hell. (Apologies if my post is a little discombobulated; I’m a bit scatterbrained.🫤)

Look, I love StarCraft. The games are incredibly fun and the background lore is genuinely interesting, but the mainline SC games are also a very specific kind of RTS, where every single unit has a specific role and all three races have specific strengths and weaknesses, all of them balanced against each other as best as the developers can manage. While there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that as evidenced by their incredible replayability, it also limits the kind of gameplay and variety I believe the setting has to offer. For example, the Confederacy, Dominion, Kel-Morians, Umojans, pirate groups, etc. are all different factions with different capabilities and assets, but as far as gameplay is concerned they’re all just Terrans with purely cosmetic differences outside of LotV co-op missions. The same goes for the different factions of Protoss, and I don’t think it’s outside the realm of possibility for different Zerg broods to specialize in different creatures and mutations/evolutions.

When I got to thinking about what kind of RTS I’d like to see that would showcase this, my first thought was the original Dawn of War because it allowed you to customize units on the battlefield by giving them different weapons such as swapping out a tank’s autocannon for anti-armor laser cannons, or give infantry special weapons like rocket launchers, flamethrowers, machine guns, etc. It also deployed regular infantry in squads and special characters as individuals who could operate on their own or be attached to squads to buff them in various ways. (The engine it runs on also comes from a game that would be right up the Zerg’s alley.)

But that was still too similar to the kind of RTS StarCraft already is, and in my opinion too limited in scale for players to use huge units like Colossi or starships. So after some more thinking I realized Eugen Systems’ Wargame trilogy was a good approximation of what I wanted. Eugen has published other games that play similarly, and Broken Arrow) is an indie title cut from the same cloth.

Basically, in these games you’re commanding a large number of soldiers and fighting across maps that can be over 100km across, with the bigger multiplayer matches looking like a decent approximation of two real life army divisions engaging each other in a chaotic brawl. Cover and concealment matter because they can shield units from attack or detection, angle of attack matters because vehicles have different armor thickness on different sides, and on maps this size it’s entirely possible to sneak a few units around causing havoc while your opponent is tearing their hair out trying to find the assholes blowing up their supply depots. When picking a nation to play as, you can also choose specific branches of the armed forces such as the marines, airborne, or armored cavalry, each giving access to units with higher combat experience as well as some exclusive units. Broken Arrow goes even further by allowing the player to customize the loadouts of vehicles, such as what an aircraft will be carrying on its hardpoints, the mounted guns on ground vehicles, what kind of armor or add-ons they have, etc.

Add a good base-building system, and a game like that would make for an amazing spinoff if executed correctly. Units like Colossi or Thors could be shown at their true scale, Zerg players would be able to play with lore-accurate swarm sizes, and Blizzard would have the perfect justification to come up with all sorts of new units that couldn’t be added to the main games due to balance issues, as well as variants of existing units that would logically exist, such as a Hellion that swaps out the flamethrower for a rocket launcher, rotary cannon, laser, or reconnaissance gear.

Hell, they could even introduce an entirely new race to the gameplay, like the Tagal!

Again, I realize there’ll probably be a lot of fans who will hate the very idea of a game like that, plus the chances of Blizzard actually making it are basically zero. I just think it would be cool and fun, and I get excited by the possibilities of what such a game might be like. Hopefully some of the Redditors who read this post will feel the same way.🙂

Protoss Are Too Hot, Zerg Are Too Cold, But Terran?

I've always enjoyed genuine conversations about balance but felt like it's hard to find in the starcraft community. Usually it's one of two extremes: either 'balance is fine' or reddit where it feels like most people just want to shitpost and meme.

And so I decided to put together a little casual talk show with some of my starcraft friends who I've known for years since we already talk about balance with each other regularly. I'm hoping that some of you might enjoy this type of candid conversation and in the future we'll have some guests and special topics like map makers discussing how maps affect balance, etc.

Also, I'm obviously aware of my reputation on this forum as a zerg whiner and I'm humbly asking you to give this a chance. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised and I'm open to suggestions for improvement.

It says in the Starcraft Wiki page that it was the base of the Sons of Korhal. But to those who have been playing during the 1990's to early 2000's, this is quite mind boggling as Terrans used Command Centers as their headquarters but this one was not even in the gameplay itself.

Starcraft 2 promo Standee, could use some advice.

So I went through my storage today and found what I thought were my world of warcraft promo standees, come to find out only one is WoW and the other is starcraft 2 wings of liberty.

What I’m trying to figure out is how to go about finding someone interested in this one, or where to post this to reach the right person.

I’m not sure where to even begin when it comes to this kind of material.

The second image is one I found online of it put together, because I dont want to put this one together just for the purpose of taking pictures

Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated :)

Patch 5.0.15 Community Retrospective

Hello friends, I'm curious about your perspectives on the most recent patch about 6 months ago. I'm interested if the patch met your expectations or satisfied the stated goals of the patch. For example, I haven't seen microbial shroud used once in my games since the patch was released.

Personally I don't have many opinions. I only recently started laddering seriously so I don't have strong feelings one way or another. I'm especially interested in high ladder players, has the patch changed anything about the games you play?

Does anyone know if there are more game modes similar to Domination in Coopalypse? (More info in post).

Me and some friends (Around 7 or so) love to casually play starcraft versus, especially doing FFA.

We really got into Coopalypse because of their "Domination" game mode. In domination whenever someone is defeated by another player they join their team. My friends love this because it means no one is left out and everyone gets to play the entire round, a lot less salt comes about because of it.

I was wondering if anyone knew some sort of Arcade mode that works in a similar fashion or some sort of melee mod. It'd be lovely and i'd be very grateful.
