Because some people asked why I refuse to use any product (namely forwardemail.net and mxroute) utilizing UCEprotect (even the Lv.1):

Well, there's even dedicated hall of shame but I thought this page was a bit… aggressive, so I created this page just to my own reference.

And if you ask,

why do you even refuse any services using UCEprotect?

The answer is…

I don't trust any service that uses UCEprotect because I see usage of it as 'lack of proper understanding of the service they rely on', and they are enabling UCEprotect to collect that ransom.

Some people (mostly provider from EU (in this page, it includes UK because brexit provisions made EU GDPR into UK domestic law) where GDPR is their law) asks me to comply with GDPR in my services; while their law states their law extends to me because I happen to handle EU person's data, that does not make sense to me because it is too wide of a extraterritorial application of law, and that I already have my own 'Personal Information Protection Act' in my country, since 2012. Also, most of my service is generally targeted at Korean people, and rest of the World is accepted just because there are either Korean (either as a nationality, or as a language speaker) is present everywhere — and I also travel outside Korea. After all, EU has no means to force me to court in EU country and face penalty, other than by my voluntary submission.

So my stance on GDPR is: while I mostly accept the principle of GDPR (excluding that fucked up bullshit cookie notice), I refuse to be bound by EU law. If you want to exercise your privacy right, you will need to cite Korean Personal Information Privacy Act clauses, and use K-PIPA forms and procedures to get it done. (Note PIPA is GDPR adequate as of the publication of this post.)

Blog is now hosted on omg.lol's blog (well, weblog) service instead of Twyne. I really prefer twyne (for ability to embed GPS coord and map data, overland support), but for some foreseeable future, I need to reduce amount of server running (because I won't be able to apply security updates in a timely manner), and therefore I'm turning off the twyne server and using omg.lol for now. I probably should run a total backup of old twyne server before moving completely though....

Daum: Korean. Also unsure about this one’s independence.

While they are not really well known outside South Korea, it has Wikipedia article and is one of the first search engine in Korea. I don't have much insight on how their search index is run, but they run their own index with own webmaster tools, site registration site (Korean only), and robots.

They once worked with Google (well, in 2000s) for their non-Korean index but their deal (seemingly) expired in 2009 and runs their own index.

One thing to note is that both Daum and Naver is (just like Google and Microsoft) owner of their own content services (ie. they both have blog, forum, and video platform) and are known to prioritize result from their own services over the answers available outside their walled garden.

PC버전에 접속하지 않은 기간의 대화 중 최근 3일 이내 대화만 확인할 수 있습니다. 확인하지 않은 메시지는 3일간 보관 후 프라이버시 보호를 위해 완전히 삭제합니다. 톡서랍 플러스 서비스 이용 중에도 오픈 채팅방의 대화는 보관에서 제외되어 복원이 불가능합니다.

여러 기기 (컴퓨터, 노트북, 휴대전화, 아이패드 등) 이용 시 기기와 관계 없이 언제나 필요하면 채팅 내용을 복기하는 기능을 주요 기능으로 생각하기 때문에, 해당 기능이 존재하지 않는 오픈카톡을 사용하지 않습니다.

1. I dunno how sustainable it is, given those rich enough to pay for that Enterprise API also has enough money to hire the human to replace Enterprise API.

갑자기 '연락주세요' 라는 입금명으로 5천원이 입금되어서 ?????? 연락처를 보내주고 연락주세요 라고 해야될거아냐 라는 생각을 하고 있으려니 지인에게 전화가 옴. '어디서 검색했는데 당사자 연락처는 못 찾고 자기 번호만 찾아서 전화했는데 나한테 신고당하기 전에 연락하라'는 전화였단다.

뭔일이여? 하면서 전화했더니 (무슨 회사인지는 들었지만 언급하지 않겠음) 회사 서버에서 내 서버로 연결이 가서 내가 뭔 해킹을 하고있는게아니냐… 뭐 그런 거였는데 그 서버가 무엇인고 하니 NTP. https://ntppool.org 에 개인 서버 등록해 두고 시간동기화 서버 남들 쓰라고 올려둔 거였는데 자체 서버에서 시간 동기화 하는 걸 침입으로… 오인했나봄.

설명하고 끊었더니 높으신 분이 전화해서 이력서 넣을 생각 없냐고 하시기에… 이쪽 일은 취미로만 한다고 말했다. (실제로 이걸로 돈 벌어먹을 깜냥은 안 됨)

여튼… 괴상한 해프닝이었다.

왜 관리자들이 문서 훼손은 벼락같이 잡으면서 복잡한 분쟁이 엮인 사용자 관리 요청 같은 것은 처리하지 않으려고 할까요?

문서 훼손은 벼락같이 잡으면 적어도 욕은 안 먹지만 사용자 관리 요청은 어느 방향으로 결정하던간에 무조건 반대쪽 사람한테 “이것은 부당한 차단이다” “관리자 권한 오남용이다” “권한회수신청하겠다” 라는 말을 듣는데, 눈앞에 가시밭길이 있는 것이 떡하니 보이는데도 굳이 그 길로 가야 할까요?

이 글은 2016년에 쓴 글입니다. 현재 시점의 저와 의견이 다른 경우도 있고, 당시에는 알지 못했던 사실이 추후에 공개되는 경우도 있습니다. 이 점을 양해하고 읽어 주시기를 부탁드립니다.

전자책은 일반적으로 플랫폼[1] 종속적이고 기기 종속적이기 때문에 내가 어느 기기를 소유하고 있고 어느 플랫폼에서 이를 구매했는가에 따라 이 도서를 내 환경에서 읽을 수 있는가가 갈리게 된다.

예를 들어 Apple iBooks에서 구매한 책은 Apple 기기 외에서는 읽을 수 없고, 알라딘에서 구매한 전자책을 아마존 킨들에서 읽을 수 없다. 혹여 해당 플랫폼을 운영하는 사업자가 '사업성 부진'을 이유로 서비스를 종료한다고 하면 해당 전자책 파일을 백업해두지 않으면 내가 돈을 주고 구매한 파일은 영영 만나볼 수 없는 버린 돈이 되기도 하고.

전자책의 종이책보다 싼 가격에는 종이책을 제작하는 데 소요되는 종이와 인건비, 운송료만 빠지는 게 아니라 내가 이 플랫폼에 종속되는 데 대한 동의로 주어지는 리베이트가 어느정도 포함되는 것이 아닌가? 그래서 전자책을 살땐 아싸리 epub이나 pdf로 된 전자책을 찾아보던가 아니면 걍 종이로 사던가 도서관에 구매신청하던가 하는 중.

[1]: 플랫폼이라 함은 일반적으로 하드웨어 또는 소프트웨어를 말하니까 둘 다 라고 얘기할 수 있겠지만, 이 글에서 플랫폼은 소프트웨어만을 의미하기로 한다.
