At some point, I will be done with my event photography business. And when that happens, I plan on exploring other photography topics more fully (that I have been putting on hold due to time constraints) such as food, landscapes and sports. Along with my plan on taking more sports photos, I thought I would expand my Nikon mirrorless camera body portfolio with a body that aligns more closely with that goal. And what better Nikon body than the Z9 to accomplish this (maybe the D6 might also be a good choice, but I wouldn’t want to re-purchase all those F mount lenses again! And besides, the shutter sound of the D6 was way too loud for me).

Even though the Nikon Z9II is on the horizon, until that day comes, the original old fashion Z9 should hold me over until that day comes. Also, I will be selling off some of my series 2 bodies at some point to help finance the Z9 and Z9II purchases. Today, NASA released a new photo of earth as the crew of the Artemis II speeds towards the moon. It was taken with the Nikon D5 with the Nikkor 14-24mm f/2.8 lens at 22mm. Exposure info was f/4 at ¼ sec at ISO 51200. The image was taken by NASA astronaut Reid Wiseman, Artemis II commander.

In my opinion, the image has a lot of noise. I think that was the whole point of bringing the D5, the smaller resolution sensor would mean lower noise as compared to the Z9. This is still an impressive view. I’m not sure what the highlight is around the right hand side.

Either way, I’m proud to be associated with a camera brand that is good enough to be used on mission critical space adventures!

Updated 3-31-2026: With yet another Z9 firmware release (ver 5.32), I thought I would put together a comprehensive guide to all of the Z9 updates to date. This also serves as a historical record of how far the Z9 has come starting with its firmware at birth with version 1.00 (updates listed in reverse order, from newest to oldest below). When you see all of the changes over the years, it’s amazing that this camera functioned at all upon release.

To help with navigation between updates, each version is separated by a photo and the title of the update appears in gold letters.

Firmware Version 5.31 to 5.32:

• Changed the way the aperture was adjusted on a lens when the standby timer expired.

• Fixed an issue where the camera would sometimes stop responding if a picture was zoomed in during filtered playback while FTP upload was in progress.

Firmware Version 5.30 to 5.31:

• Fixed an issue where the focus point would sometimes leave the subject immediately after tracking started when [AF-area mode] was set to [3D-tracking] in photo mode or to [Subject-tracking AF] in video mode.

• • Direct measurement of white balance is now available also for still photography via applications, such as NX Tether.

• • Changed the specifications for uninterrupted video output to HDMI devices such as external monitors when recording ended.

• • The headphone volume level can now be adjusted in the “i” menu during video recording.

• • Videos no longer rotate automatically with the camera when [Auto-rotate pictures] is set to [ON] in the [PLAYBACK MENU].

• • Added [Flat Monochrome] and [Deep Tone Monochrome] Picture Control options to [RAW processing (current picture)] / [RAW processing (multiple pictures)] in the [Retouch] menu. Also added support for “Flexible Color” Picture Controls.

• • The speed at which the camera cycles through focus points using the multi selector or sub-selector no longer slows down when changing direction.

• • The tonal characteristics have been changed when [ON] is selected for Custom Setting g14 [View assist] in the [CUSTOM SETTINGS MENU].

• • Fixed typos in the monitor display when pressing a control to which [Shooting menu bank] had been assigned using Custom Setting g2 [Custom controls] in the [CUSTOM SETTINGS MENU] while either [Histogram] or [Wave-form monitor] was displayed during video recording.

Firmware Version 5.10 to 5.20

• Added support for “NX Field*”, a remote shooting system for corporate users.

• Renamed d14 [Display on during burst] in [CUSTOM SETTINGS MENU].

• Fixed the following issues:

  • - Pressing the playback button after repeatedly shooting bursts would in rare cases corrupt the display of all images.

  • - In rare circumstances, optimal exposure could not be achieved during burst shooting after changing the exposure in mode M.

  • - In synchronized release, pressing the shutter-release button of the master camera halfway initiated autofocus on the remote camera with the following setting selected.

    • ▸ [CUSTOM SETTINGS MENU] > a6 [AF activation] > [AF-ON only]

Firmware Version 5.00 to 5.10

■ Video Recording

• • Hi-Res Zoom is now available when the image area is set to “DX”.

  • - Pressing the AF-ON button did not end the zoomed-in display in manual focus when:

    • ▸ The AF-ON button was set to either [AF-ON] or [AF-area mode + AF-ON], and

    • ▸ [ON] was selected for d19 or g17 [Half-press to cancel zoom (MF)] in the [CUSTOM SETTINGS MENU].

  • - The viewfinder and monitor shooting displays (live view) sometimes caused overexposures when the standby timer had expired and reactivated.

  • - In rare circumstances, photos would be overexposed when taken using [Recall shooting functions (hold)] assigned to a custom control.

  • - Buffer capacity sometimes dropped with some CFexpress memory cards.

  • - In rare circumstances, the camera would stop responding or the viewfinder and monitor shooting displays (live view) would be corrupted after burst photography when:

    • ▸ [ON] was selected for [Photo flicker reduction] in [PHOTO SHOOTING MENU].

  • - RAW videos recorded under the following conditions would appear too bright when played back with compatible computer software.

    • ▸ Either [N-RAW 12-bit (NEV)] or [ProRes RAW HQ 12-bit (MOV)] was selected for [Video file type] and [SDR] for [Tone mode].

    • ▸ ISO 100 or below was selected for [ISO sensitivity settings].

  • - In slow network speed environments, the camera would be slower to respond when zoomed in or out on photos while uploading to the FTP server if:

    • ▸ [ON] was selected for [Connect to FTP server] > [Options] > [Auto upload] in [NETWORK MENU], or

    • ▸ An option other than [Off] was selected for [Connect to FTP server] > [Options] > [Upload in HEIF format] in [NETWORK MENU].

Firmware Version 4.10 to 5.00

Note: Users of the following software will need to update to the latest versions.

• • Camera Control Pro 2 version 2.37.0 or later, NX Studio version 1.6.1 or later, and SnapBridge version 2.11.0 or later.

• • A warning now appears when the connection to an ATOMOS AirGlu BT accessory is unstable or disrupted.

• • Added [Wi-Fi connection (STA mode)] which allows you to connect the camera to the smart device via a wireless LAN access point.

• • Port numbers can now be specified using [Connect to FTP server] in [NETWORK MENU].

• • Added [Upload in HEIF format] to [Connect to FTP server] > [Options] in [NETWORK MENU].
  Note: Converted HEIF images are not stored on the memory card.

• • ATOMOS AirGlu BT accessories and MC-N10 remote grips can now be used together.

• • Automatically obtained IP address will be maintained after automatic IP addressing disabled.

• • Automatically obtained gateway/DNS server addresses are now displayed in the TCP/IP edit display.

• • File names of the image and audio now match if the file name of the image is renamed during transfer.

  • - The password displayed after the camera's default settings are restored

■ Other Changes

• • When [AF-area mode] is set to [3D-tracking] and the human subject is large relative to the frame and multiple eyes are detected near the tracking focus point, the camera will assign priority for focusing to the eye closer to the point.

• • The time the shooting display goes dark after shutter is released when [ON] is selected for [Photo flicker reduction] in the [PHOTO SHOOTING MENU] has become shorter.

• • The RGB histogram is now easier to view when [Mode 1] or [Mode 2] is selected for d12 [Warm display colors] in [CUSTOM SETTINGS MENU].

• • [SETUP MENU] > [Firmware version] now shows GNSS module firmware “G”.

• • GNSS module firmware update is now available.
  Note: The second update is not necessary if the GNSS module's firmware “G” is already 0.17, as with which version, the improvement has already been made.
  Note: Refer to “GNSS Module Firmware Update” for updating procedures.

• • The firmware for the GNSS module has been updated.

  • - Improved acquisition performance when used in certain areas where the quasi-zenith satellite “QZSS” can be acquired.

• • Fixed the following issues:

  • - Fine-tuning values set in [AF fine-tuning options] in the setup menu did not apply while the subject is detected with [Wide-area AF (S)], [Wide-area AF (L)], [Wide-area AF (C1)], or [Wide-area AF (C2)] selected for [AF-area mode].

  • - Switching to the playback display and attempting to operate the sub-selector did not result as intended while the memory card access lamp was lit after burst shooting when [Series playback] > [Sub-selector displays first shot] in [PLAYBACK MENU] was enabled.

  • - Optimal exposure could sometimes not be achieved in burst or focus shift shooting.

  • - Shutter release was sometimes disabled when “Bulb” was selected for shutter speed.

  • - Subjects could sometimes not be detected in the correct position when repeatedly shooting airplanes.

Firmware Version 4.01 to 4.10

• • Added [Birds] and [Airplanes] to [AF subject detection options] in the photo shooting and video recording menus.

Firmware Version 4.00 to 4.01

• • Fixed the following issues:

  • - The camera would in rare circumstances stop responding or fail to record a video correctly if an attempt for video recording took place after the standby timer had expired then reactivated with [Frame size/frame rate] set to 1920 × 1080 in the VIDEO RECORDING MENU.

  • - The [Choose image area] and [Switch FX/DX] roles assigned to camera controls were disabled when a slow-motion video option was selected.

  • - The first shot in burst photography would sometimes fail to acquire appropriate white balance when [Auto] or [Natural light auto] was selected for white balance.

  • - If shooting continued while [ON] was selected for [PHOTO SHOOTING MENU] > [Photo flicker reduction], the photo live view display would be partially disrupted.

Firmware Version 3.10 to 4.00

Users can select capture criteria from [Motion] (the direction the subject is moving), [Distance] (how far the subject is from the camera), and [Subject detection] (whether or not a subject of a given type is detected), and the camera will take photographs automatically while it detects subjects that meet the selected criteria. Note that [Distance] is available with NIKKOR Z lenses and may not function as expected when used with other lenses.

• • The length of time the camera will continue to buffer frames before cancelling shooting during the Pre-Release Capture phase of high-speed frame capture has been increased from 30 to 300 seconds.

• • Added [Large] to the size options available for [Role played by card in Slot 2] > [JPEG Slot 1 - JPEG Slot 2] in the photo shooting menu.

• • Added new bracketing increments for use during auto bracketing with [AE & flash bracketing], [AE bracketing], or [Flash bracketing] selected for [Auto bracketing set]. This change also applies to [Interval timer shooting] > [Options] > [AE bracketing] > [Increment].

■ Video Recording

• • Added [Auto capture] to the video recording menu. Users can select capture criteria from [Motion] (the direction the subject is moving), [Distance] (how far the subject is from the camera), and [Subject detection] (whether or not a subject of a given type is detected), and the camera will record video automatically while it detects subjects that meet the selected criteria.   •    A new [Frame advance zoom position] > [Prefer focus point] role for Custom Setting f3 [Custom controls (playback)] can be used during playback zoom to center the display on the active focus point for each picture when scrolling through pictures using a command dial.
    Choose [Prefer focus point] for f3 [Custom controls (playback)] > [Main command dial] or [Sub-command dial] > [Frame advance zoom position].

• • Made updates to [Non-CPU lens data] in the [SETUP MENU].

• • Increased the character limit for “Category” entries in IPTC presets.

• • Restructured the [Camera sounds] item in the [SETUP MENU] with the addition of new options, including new sounds and volume level adjustment for the electronic shutter.

■ Displays

• • Added focus-distance information to the focus distance indicator displayed during manual focus.

• • The option selected for [Viewfinder display size] (formerly [Finder display size (photo Lv)]) in the [SETUP MENU] now also applies in video and playback modes.

■ Network (Also NX Field)

• • Made changes and additions to the [Connect to FTP server] item in the [NETWORK MENU].

• • Changed the procedure used when configuring the camera for synchronized release, increasing to twenty the number of groups that can be created, while the number of cameras in each group that can be controlled from the master camera has been increased to sixteen.

• • Added [Overwrite copyright info] under [Connect to other cameras] in the [NETWORK MENU].

■ App-Related Changes

With NX MobileAir:

  • - FTP errors would sometimes occur during connection to FTP servers.

  • - Upload to certain FTP servers would continue indefinitely with no pictures being uploaded.

  • - Once added to [MY MENU] or [RECENT SETTINGS], Custom setting d14 [Release timing indicator] could not be selected in either menu, nor removed from [MY MENU] using [Remove items].

  • - If (a) AF-C was selected for focus mode, (b) an option other than [3D-tracking] was selected for AF-area mode, (c) an option other than [Subject detection off] was selected for [AF subject detection options] in the [PHOTO SHOOTING MENU], and (d) the shooting settings recalled via a control to which [Recall shooting functions] or [Recall shooting functions (hold)] was assigned using Custom Setting f2 [Custom controls (shooting)] had [3D-tracking] selected for [AF-area mode], then subject detection would not be performed where expected when AF-ON was initiated via the custom control.

  • - Shutter speeds of 1/320 s to 1/640 s would produce uneven exposure across the frame in pictures taken with SB‑800 flash units using auto FP high-speed sync.

  • - Choosing a different Custom Settings bank in the [CUSTOM SETTINGS MENU] after selecting a non-default setting for [Auto bracketing] > [Increment] in the [PHOTO SHOOTING MENU] would cause the value for [Auto bracketing] > [Increment] in the [PHOTO SHOOTING MENU] to revert to 1.

  • - Shooting information would in rare circumstances disappear from the viewfinder.

  • - Attempting to record 8K video with a NIKKOR Z 14-30mm f/4S lens attached and an option other than [Off] selected for [Vibration reduction] in the [VIDEO RECORDING MENU] would sometimes cause the camera to stop responding.

  • - Tracking small or low-contrast subjects against a solid-color background such as a blue sky would sometimes cause the focus area to move to the top of the display.

  • - Selecting [C30] or [C120] for release mode when an option other than [Off] was chosen for [Active D-Lighting] in the [PHOTO SHOOTING MENU] would cause monitor or viewfinder brightness to change.

  • - The camera would in rare circumstances fail to record 8K video correctly.

  • - In video mode, the camera would fail to increase the aperture (lower the f/-number) after reaching the upper limit for ISO sensitivity in modes P and S if the value selected for [ISO sensitivity settings] > [Maximum sensitivity] in the [VIDEO RECORDING MENU] was below [12800].

  • - Selecting [ON] for [Exposure smoothing] during interval-timer photography when a non-CPU lens was attached would cause gradually worsening overexposure throughout each series of pictures.

  • - Attempts to connect to SFTP servers configured using macOS would fail with an error unless the home folder was selected as the destination.

  • - When users switched from one custom settings bank to another storing a different setting for Custom Setting a9, [Focus mode restrictions], the focus mode setting stored in the second bank would not be recalled; instead, the setting for the first bank would continue in force and could not be changed.

  • - The camera would sometimes stop responding if a picture was taken with [ON] selected both for [Picture review] in the [PLAYBACK MENU] and for [Photo flicker reduction] in the [PHOTO SHOOTING MENU].

  • - Messages in some languages would sometimes overflow the display.

  • - Apps such as NX Tether and SnapBridge would display incorrect values for maximum aperture with some lenses during remote photography.

  • - The standby timer would in rare circumstances not be reactivated if the shutter-release button was pressed shortly after it expired.

  • - The following issues would occur in mode M if an option other than [Exposure maintenance off] was selected for Custom Setting b7 ([Keep exp. when f/ changes]) in the [CUSTOM SETTINGS MENU] when [OFF] was selected for [ISO sensitivity settings] > [Auto ISO sensitivity control] in the photo shooting menu:

    • ▸ Selecting [ISO sensitivity] for Custom Setting b7 ([Keep exp. when f/ changes]) would make the camera less responsive when ISO sensitivity was adjusted using the ISO button and command dials. The camera would also display ISO sensitivities lower than the lowest available value (in these circumstances, the lowest available value would be ISO 64).

    • ▸ Selecting [Shutter speed] for Custom Setting b7 ([Keep exp. when f/ changes]) would make the camera less responsive when shutter speed was adjusted using the command dials.

  • - Removing and replacing the memory card after copying white balance from an existing photograph using [White balance] > [Preset manual] in the [PHOTO SHOOTING MENU] or [VIDEO RECORDING MENU] would result in the picture for the chosen preset being displayed as a blank black image.

Features of the NIKKOR Z 70-200mm f/2.8 VR S II lens

• The NIKKOR Z 70-200mm f/2.8 VR S II has the lightest weight in its class (998 g), achieved by modifying the front lens group configuration and eliminating mechanical components in the moving lens groups. This makes the lens easy to carry and comfortable to use for extended shooting periods. Overall, the lens is 26% lighter and 12mm shorter than its predecessor.

• The multi-focusing system now utilizes a Silky Swift VCM (SSVCM) to achieve extremely fast, precise, and quiet autofocus for both stills and video.

• A revised optical formula uses six different types of lens elements – Super ED, aspherical ED, ED, aspherical, fluorite, and Short-wavelength Refractive (SR) to effectively correct lens aberrations for clearer and more natural rendering. Additionally, the lens now features 11 rounded diaphragm blades for more natural, circular bokeh.

• The lens adopts a Meso Amorphous Coat, which offers the best anti-reflection performance in Nikon history, and an ARNEO Coat which effectively suppresses ghosting and flares.

• The minimum focus distance is 0.38 m (wide) and 0.8 m (tele), with a maximum reproduction ratio of 0.3× (wide) /0.25× (tele), letting users get closer to their subjects than ever before.

• This is the first ever NIKKOR lens to support the use of Arca-Swiss tripod heads, for smoother tripod mounting and dismounting. A removable tripod collar ring enables smooth switching between portrait and landscape orientation, and a protective cover is included for comfortable hand-held shooting.

I have captured around 1,800 photos since taking delivery of the NIKKOR Z 800mm f/6.3 VR S lens. Overall, I have been happy with my purchase. One thing to keep in mind is that due to the long focal length, keep your minimum shutter speed up. I can’t recommend what that shutter speed should be since it would depend on your particular circumstances. However, just remember to set it up higher than you normally would given your situation.

About a month prior to the Super Bowl, I received a message from Nikon Professional Services asking if I was credentialed for Super Bowl LX. I wasn’t but that email gave me an idea. I wondered if any Nikon ambassadors were attending the Super Bowl as photographers. And if so, could any of them be testing a pre-production model of the Nikon Z9II? Then I remembered that Rod Mar was the photographer for the Seahawks.

Now, I’m aware that using a half backed camera for one of the biggest sporting events in the world may seem risky, but using one as a remote camera or in some other reduced key role would appear reasonable for testing purposes.

So, I started to look for Super Bowl content that may have been produced by Rod Mar, Seahawks photographer and Nikon Ambassador. And sure enough, I found a gallery of Rod’s work on the Seahawk’s website. This photo gallery is very compelling, demonstrating auto-focus capabilities that appear to exceed what the current Nikon Z9 can do, at least from what I remember when I owned one. The photos really show that what ever camera Rod was using was very capable as demonstrated by the hawk photo. Could this be the result of the firmware update 5.3 that improved auto focus tracking and speed? Oh, by the way, it matters also that Rod is a great sports photographer :)

A quote from Corey’s blog: “Last fall, I had the chance to accompany Alex Honnold on a scouting mission in Taiwan as he prepared for something truly unreal: free soloing Taipei 101, a 1,667-foot skyscraper. I was honored to shoot the photography and key art for Netflix to promote this global live event on January 23.” We all know now that the event didn’t happen until January 25, 2026, depending on what time zone your in.

James Balog, one of the original group of Nikon Ambassadors, is no longer. Balog was one of the original 13 photographers admitted into the Nikon Ambassadors program. I have to admit that I just released Balog was no longer a member.

Others photographers who were part of the original 13 who are no longer part of the program are:

• Sandro Miller

I wonder why they leave or are asked to leave by Nikon? The expectations don’t appear to be very hard to satisfy. On Nikon’s website, it has the following statement on the Ambassador’s page:

“The Nikon Ambassadors are authorized by Nikon to demonstrate to the public and professional image makers the capabilities and use of Nikon imaging products, but the expressive content of their work is solely their own. Nikon Ambassadors are independent contractors and visual artists and are not employees of Nikon. Nikon Ambassadors are responsible for the content of their photographs, websites, exhibitions, and visual images and the manner in which such content and images are obtained. Any messages, beliefs, or viewpoints expressed in the Ambassador’s photographs, websites, exhibitions, or visual images do not necessarily reflect the opinions, beliefs or viewpoints of Nikon or any Nikon employee.”

And also:

“To be selected as an Ambassador, a photographer must be considered among the most talented and influential visual artists working in the business today. This elite group consists of gifted, spirited storytellers who are admired for their passion, energy and commitment to their craft. The Ambassadors represent a vast array of backgrounds and shooting disciplines that reflect the breadth of professional photographers today; including wedding /portraiture, fashion, wildlife, sports, adventure and multimedia.”

This sounds pretty reasonable to me. The only thing I can think of as to a reason for leaving or being ask to leave is that they no longer use Nikon as their main camera gear.

In late 2025, just in time for the holidays and a family trip to Phoenix AZ, I purchased my own Christmas present, the Nikon Zf silver edition.

So far, it handles and performs just like the Z6II (that I just sold) wrapped up in a old fashion F body with manual dials and that’s OK with me. I loved the Z6II and it was most used camera body ever.

Overall, I was pleased with the performance and I think this is a long term keeper. The NIKKOR Z 40mm f/2 SE edition of the lens (with the silver ring) served very well for this trip. I also have the wide angle NIKKOR Z 28mm f/2.8 lens special SE version of the lens (again, with the silver ring on the barrel).

The Zf served me well on this family vacation in Arizona. As you can tell from my portfolio on the home page, I’m mostly a medium to tight shooter so I didn’t use the NIKKOR Z 28mm f/2.8 (SE) much or at all. I still expect to use that lens on occasion so will keep it for now.

One thing that suprized me was how good the Nikon Zf with the NIKKOR Z 40mm f/2 (SE) lens was. For the price and size, the contrast level was very exceptionable.

DPReview just announced the results of their DPReview Reader’s Choice Awards for 2025. And the winner is: The Nikon Z5II! I’m really surprised on this one. This is in addition to winning DPReview’s Gold award based on their review of the camera. Yes, the Z5II is an impressive camera for sure but compared to other brands and other cameras in Nikon’s lineup, it’s not really a standout camera in terms of features or abilities. I think what readers saw in the Z5II is the value for the price. Having Nikon’s latest EXPEED 7 processor and latest auto focusing features carried down from the Z8 and Z9 (albeit not quiet as accurate or fast as the AF found on the flagships) may justify the award. But having taken over 7 thousand photos so far with the Z5II, (by the way, I had no idea I had taken that many photos since I just purchased the camera not too long ago but that’s what my Capture One library says) I can say that overall, I’m pleased with the camera. I even sold my loved Z6II after purchasing the Z5II. It sounds like a step down, going from the Z6II to the Z5II but I do notice a noticeable increase in overall responsiveness, better AF and one thing I need during events, a much faster photo preview after taking a photo. With the Z6II, I had to wait a second or so to if the person blinked or had a poor expression etc… With the Z5II, photo review is just about as fast as the Z8 and Z9.

I’m not sure on the timing on the announcement. I could be slightly wrong on the aperture value but I’m certain on the focal length. Tomorrow morning, I will post the actual graphic that should appear on Nikon’s front page at www.NikonUSA.com. This appears to be a non S lens and is obviously a follow up to Canon’s popular 24-105mm lens with the same aperture values and focal lengths.

National Geographic recently released their photos of the year for 2025. Although some were taken by Nikon cameras, none were taken by Nikon’s mirrorless cameras!

Out of 20 photos chosen by Nat Geo for their 2025 pictures of the year, 3 or 15% were taken with Nikon cameras and lenses.

The Nikon cameras and lenses used and what the subject of the photo was were as follows:

• D750 with the AF-S NIKKOR 35mm f/1.8G ED lens: Jaguar taken by Fernando Faciole

• D850 with the AF-S NIKKOR 28mm f/1.8G lens: Shark taken by Nikon USA ambassador Brian Skerry

• D780 with the AF-S NIKKOR 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5G ED VR lens: Pig in boarder fence taken by Jaime Rojo

What jumped out at me is that all of these Nikon photographers were using Nikon DSLR cameras in 2025, not mirrorless ones! Is this because they are not successful financially to be able to afford at least current mirrorless Nikon gear? You mean to tell me that a Nikon ambassador, Brian Skerry, can’t afford a current Nikon mirrorless camera and camera housing to go with it? To add insult to these Nikon photographers, all of the other camera brands represented among the remaining photos were using modern mirrorless models within their respective brand. This is an embarrassment to Nikon. The message is clear; Nikon mirrorless is not worth upgrading to and that their DSLRs are good enough. To add insult to insult, one of the lenses used above, the 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5G ED VR lens, is being reported on another website as being discontinued. Although, this is not true and is inaccurate reporting, at least it still hints at how old this equipment is.

I have to admit, as I have mentioned in other posts on this site, I would have never upgraded to Nikon mirrorless if it wasn’t for the release of the Nikon D6. Let me explain. I have always used the current Nikon flagship camera, starting with the D3s. When the D6 was released, I purchased it as I had with the other flagships. I loved the D6! You have to hold it to understand how this camera feels in your hand (much like the Nikon F6 film camera). Along with the superb AF and speedy performance, the D6 was a dream DSLR. So, what was the problem. One thing jumped out as soon as I started to use it: The shutter was way too loud, especially when used during events such as conferences and weddings. I quickly realized that I had to go mirrorless if I wanted a quieter camera and still use a current flagship Nikon camera. That’s when I purchased the Z9 and never looked back to DSLRs.
