I was out with the Nikon COOLPIX P1100 on a very clear evening monitoring flight radar 24 and noticed a wide-body aircraft approaching. It turned out it was a United airlines Boeing Dreamliner flying from London (LHR) to San Fransisco (SFO) at 40K feet.

What made it more special is the livery was showing the 100 years designation. Yes, United Airlines is celebrating their 100th birthday this year and this plane shows off that accomplishment.

Some more facts about this flight and plane:

The registration number is: N61101

It was put into service in 2025 making this aircraft brand new.

The model designation is 787-9

History of United Airlines:

Era-Defining United Airlines Historical Milestones

• 1926: The Airmail Foundation: On April 6, 1926, pilot Leon Cuddeback flew a Swallow biplane for Varney Air Lines from Pasco, Washington, to Boise, Idaho, executing the first privately contracted airmail flight in U.S. history.

• 1931: Formation of United Air Lines: Aviation pioneer William Boeing acquired Varney Air Lines alongside Boeing Air Transport, Pacific Air Transport, and National Air Transport. These entities merged under a unified umbrella management corporation to formally birth United Air Lines in Chicago.

• 1933: Introducing the First Modern Airliner: United introduced the Boeing 247, widely recognized as the world's first modern commercial airliner. It allowed passengers to fly transcontinental routes without overnight stops.

• 1936: The World's First Flight Kitchen: United established commercial aviation's very first flight kitchen to provide hot-meal service on regular flights, initially giving passengers a choice of fried chicken or scrambled eggs.

• 1961: Capital Airlines Merger: United acquired Capital Airlines, briefly positioning itself as the world's second-largest commercial airline and anchoring its dominant domestic "Main Line" network.

• 1985–1992: Pan Am Acquisitions: Benefiting from the post-deregulation landscape, United bought out Pan American World Airways' vital Pacific route authority in 1985. It later added Pan Am's London Heathrow operations (1991) and Latin American network (1992) to build a powerhouse global presence.

• 1995: Launching the Boeing 777: Working as the collaborative launch customer, United debuted the advanced wide-body Boeing 777 into commercial service.

• 1997: Star Alliance Co-Founding: United partnered with four other global carriers to launch the Star Alliance, establishing the world's first and largest global airline alliance.

• 2010: Mega-Merger with Continental: United merged with Continental Airlines—bringing both of Walter Varney's original aviation legacies together, adopting Continental's distinctive gold globe logo, and creating one of the world's largest airline networks.

[Important: Notice Regarding the Termination of NIKON IMAGE SPACE Service Following the Expansion of Nikon Imaging Cloud Features]

Thank you for using NIKON IMAGE SPACE.

Starting October 14, 2026, the image storage * and image sharing features on NIKON IMAGE SPACE have been added to Nikon Imaging Cloud.

The NIKON IMAGE SPACE service was terminated on October 15, 2026.

* Up to 5 GB image storage capacity.

Images saved on NIKON IMAGE SPACE will not be automatically transferred to Nikon Imaging Cloud. Download any images you wish to keep by April 15, 2027.

Clicking the "Create download files" button below will create files for bulk downloading your images.

Nikon launched Nikon Image Space on January 28, 2013, deep in the DSLR era. I used Nikon Image Space for many years to deliver photos to my clients. It was free, easy and dependable. However, there was one thing I didn’t like about it. Sometimes a client would share the gallery with others and there was no way to limit who could download the full gallery all at once. Knowing that anyone could take all the photos in bulk was always an unsettling feeling. I could turn off the ability to download files but that also applied to the client. It was either allow all photos to be downloaded or none.

Other than that, it was a great resource for client file delivery.

I now use PixeSet.com for client photo delivery and welcome much more control over who can download from the gallery although it is not a free service.

Let me know in the comments below (no login required) if you used Nikon Image Space and if so, your thoughts on the service.

Nikon says of the P1100 camera: “Travel to the moon. Soar with the birds. Or keep your feet on the ground and explore the tiny details of nature—all with one extraordinary portable camera.”

I have owned the Nikon COOLPIX P1100 for a couple of years now and have to agree with Nikon’s description above. Overall, I have been impressed with the content that this camera puts out. Under the right lighting conditions, it can produce quality photos that almost equals that of Nikon’s full frame cameras. Of course, (and this is no minor detail) with an equivalent focal range of 24 - 3000mm, it’s unrivaled in the camera world in its ability to get close to your subjects. Generally speaking, if you can see it, you can photograph it with this camera, and in most cases, even fill the frame!

To achieve this incredible zoom range, some tradeoffs exist. Photos normally have higher noise levels than Nikon Z cameras, are not as sharp as ones taken with Nikon full frame bodies and are not ideal for capturing fast action shots. However, just when I say that about actions shots, the first photo that appears in the gallery below is an action shot at our local dirt track field. Just like anything else, there are always exceptions to everything I guess! All images processed with Capture One.

The P1100 is also compatible with Nikon’s mobile device program SnapBridge.

Find below a gallery of images from my much loved Nikon Z7II mirrorless camera. I mostly use the Z7II in the studio and when out of the studio, for landscapes and general scenery with a few from photography assignments.

With equivalent image quality of the legendary Nikon D850 (see https://www.dxomark.com/cameras/) with a perfect DXO score of 100, the Z 7II rarely lets me down. It’s the only Nikon mirrorless camera so far with such a score.

What follows is a small gallery of photos captured with the Z7II with a variety of Nikkor lenses. All photos processed with Capture One.

I will be adding to this gallery periodically so check back often. Let me know in the comments below your thoughts on the Nikon Z7II. No sign in required to leave a comment.

Nikon Corporation (Nikon) is pleased to announce the release of the full-frame/FX-format Nikon Z5IIC mirrorless camera featuring the Nikon Z mount.

The Z5IIC delivers the same level of performance as the Z5II (released in April 2025), which offers advanced shooting functions that support a wide variety of shooting scenes and situations, yet makes it easy for even first-time camera users to express themselves through images. The mode dial offers scene modes, a first for a Nikon full-frame mirrorless camera, that automatically optimizes color, brightness, and other imaging settings according to the scene selected. It also features a dedicated button that gives users instant access to Imaging Recipes created by Nikon and leading creators, to easily capture impressive photos and video without concern for shooting settings.

The top of the camera features a smooth, streamlined design that slips easily in and out of a bag, helping users capture everyday moments without missing a shot. An ergonomically designed grip that fits comfortably in the hand, together with powerful image stabilization, minimizes the camera shake that results in blurring, while AI-powered autofocus (AF) makes it easy to capture crisp, clear photos and video.

In addition, the Z5IIC supports video recording in 4K UHD at up to 60 fps*1 and Full HD at up to 120 fps, providing greater flexibility for editing. The camera can also be used for live streaming simply by connecting it to PC via USB cable, and offers a range of video features, including a REC lamp that clearly shows when recording is in progress, and support for Nikon’s proprietary N-Log, making it ideal for video creation.

Nikon will continue to pursue a new dimension in optical performance while meeting users' needs, contributing to the development of imaging culture, with the hope of expanding possibilities for imaging expression.

Primary features

1. User-friendly features for first-time mirrorless camera users

The Z5IIC is Nikon’s first full-frame mirrorless camera to feature scene modes on the mode dial. The settings allow even first-time camera users to immediately enjoy taking pictures and recording videos. The camera supports 15 different scenes, from everyday subjects such as portraits, pets, and food to more challenging scenes such as night landscapes and twilight.　By simply selecting the desired scene, the camera automatically adjusts more than six settings, including white balance and Picture Control. In addition, Imaging Recipes, image presets created by Nikon and leading creators, can be registered on the camera and quickly recalled using the dedicated button. This offers the smooth operation while shooting, and allows users to easily enjoy capturing photos and video that express the mood and feel they want, without post-processing.
The camera is also ideal for users who prefer a more hands-off approach to photography. Nikon’s proprietary AI technology, which utilizes deep learning, automatically detects subjects. In AUTO mode, it also enables the camera to analyze and recognize subjects and scenes, automatically optimizing exposure settings such as aperture, shutter speed, and ISO sensitivity, as well as AF. Further, in-camera vibration reduction (VR) with up to 7.5 stops*2 of correction allows users to capture blur-free photos, even when the perfect shot presents itself unexpectedly.
All of these features allow even first-time camera users to confidently explore various types of imaging expression.

2. A portable design ideal for everyday use

The Z5IIC features a smooth, streamlined design that slips easily in and out of a bag, making it ideal for everyday photography. The stable grip provides a secure hold on the camera for quick framing of those perfect moments.
The large 3.2-inch vari-angle monitor enables shooting from a variety of positions, from low angles to selfies. Just as on a smartphone, familiar touch controls such as double-tap, pinch in/out, and swipe can be used intuitively for playback as well as for focusing and shutter releases. A design with careful attention to dust- and drip-resistance, combined with a body that uses magnesium alloy in key areas for added rigidity, enables worry-free shooting outdoors.
The Z5IIC is also available in two colors, black and silver, allowing users to choose the one that best suits their preferences.

3. Outstanding image quality made possible by a full-frame mirrorless camera

The Z5IIC is equipped with a backside-illumination CMOS sensor and the same EXPEED 7 image-processing engine found in Nikon’s flagship model. When used with NIKKOR Z lenses, it delivers photos and video of a quality far superior to that possible with a smartphone. The camera beautifully reproduces everything from the subtle gradations of a sunset sky and natural bokeh to dark scenes such as night landscapes, while minimizing noise and blur. What’s more, the Z5IIC features the Film Grain function*3 introduced with the Nikon Zf (released in October 2023), making it easy to capture photos and video with a nostalgic film look.

4. Video features that support from short-form content creation to webcam use

When recording video, the REC lamp is lit and a red frame indicator is shown around the monitor display, making it possible to tell at a glance when the camera is recording. The Z5IIC supports recording at frame sizes and rates up to 4K UHD at 60 fps and Full HD at 120 fps, as well as slow-motion recording at 4× and 5× normal speed*4, making it easy to produce impressive short-form videos without post-processing. It also features Product Review Mode, which smoothly shifts focus to an item brought close to the camera, making it easy to record review videos. With UVC/UAC support for use as a webcam by simply connecting the camera to a PC, as well as support for H.265 10-bit (MOV) and N-Log*5 recording that enables users to take the next step into more advanced video production, the camera is well suited to a wide variety of uses, from vlogging on a mini tripod to video streaming.

5. Additional features

1. In a first for Nikon, [Fish] has been added to the subject-detection options.

2. High-speed continuous shooting at up to approximately 14 fps enables users to capture decisive moments of fast-moving subjects.

3. The Pre-Release Capture function can be set to record up to one second before the shutter is released in High-Speed Frame Capture +mode, which enables continuous shooting at up to 30 fps.

4. A camera-simulation function that helps users learn about shooting settings through hands-on experience and learning content that provides photography tips categorized by theme have been added to SnapBridge, which enables the automatic transfer of images to a smartphone.

5. Support for Nikon Imaging Cloud enables smooth post-shooting data management.

6. Recording of N-RAW video to an SD memory card is also supported.

In the meantime, here are a few more recent Nikon Z8 event photos:

Today, I received the Nikkor Z 35mm f/1.4 mirrorless lens from Pictureline.com

Considering that it’s not an S line lens, the build quality is pretty good. It’s light and the lens hood is not too big or too small. I would say overall, the design has a pleasing esthetic compact look.

I have not had a chance to use the lens so I have included a few sample ones from Nikon:

I plan on using this on a trip to photograph the stars next week so I will add those photos after I return. As always, thanks for stopping by!

To commemorate 25 years since 9/11, I would like to share this transcript and video below of an interview with photographer Robert A. Cumins who shot one of the most iconic photos of 9/11 using a Nikon F4 film camera.

What follows is the transcript taken from the above video:

As the country marks the 25 years since the 9/11 attacks, a photographer who documented the horror of that day reflects on how he captured a defining image of the tragedy and the significance of the photo today.

Bob Cumins is behind the wheel of his car just as he was the morning of September 11th, 2001 when he flipped on the radio. So I turned it on and I'm listening to a helicopter report from WCBS News 880. Something is going on.

At the tower, we are still looking at smoke billowing out of tower number one. It was 8:58 A.M and Cumins' instincts as a professional photographer kicked in.

He'd had a long career working in the Middle East documenting presidents and prime ministers, so he went home here to his balcony. How far are we from lower Manhattan? As the crow flies 15 miles. With his camera and a roll of film, he looked through the viewfinder at 9:03 A.M. and at that point I saw a plane in lower Manhattan. I figured I'll take a picture of the plane juxtaposed against the skyline. So I made 2 shots. He took this a split second before the 2nd plane made impact. So it was the first picture you shot. It was the 1st picture. He had to wait until the film was developed to see it as a professional.

I was put here to make that picture. You never imagined that the most historic photograph of your life would be taken from your home, right from the balcony. People magazine published Cumins's photograph on the cover within days. Does it matter that you shot it on film? I'm glad I shot it on film. It can't be challenged. He showed us the original roll of film from his archive with 19 frames. The second one, you see the tail of the jet. That analog record is maybe even more important 25 years later. In today's world of conspiracies and what have you and fakery with digital, the film is it. For Cumins, they are images that live in his mind. One split second after this picture was taken, 2000 lives are gone, a moment in history captured through his camera.

Interview with photographer Bob Cumins who took a photo just a split-second before the second plane made impact during the attacks on Sept. 11, 2001 using his Nikon F4 camera.

It’s my main workhorse for professional assignments along with my Z8. As an event photographer, I’m often shooting in low light situations. Knowing that it will have the lowest noise from any of the cameras that I currently own (https://www.robertallen-photography.com/my-nikon-gear-list) gives me confidence that what I deliver to my clients will meet their requirements as to image quality. I hope these photos serve as an inspiration as to what can be accomplished with the little Z6II. After a little more than 30,000 photos taken with the Z6II (the most of any camera in my Capture One database except the Z8), I have learned a thing or two about this camera and (surprisingly)what it is capable of.

After looking at 30K photos shot with the Nikon Z6II over the years, here are a few photos that I have had the pleasure of taking and have included in the gallery below:

Let me know in the comments below your thoughts on the Z6II and if you have the camera.

Today, Nikon discontinued the D6, their flagship DSLR camera. This leaves the D7500 (crop sensor), D780 and D850 as their only DSLR cameras available to purchase.

It was only last week that Nikon issued a firmware update for both the D6 and the D780. Very strange that they would pull the camera so soon after the new firmware updates were just issued a few day ago.

I owned the D6 and I can honestly say it was one of the best cameras I have ever used. I would have never changed over to mirrorless if the D6 worked out for me. So, what was the issue that was the deal breaker? It had fantastic autofocus, excellent image quality, great high ISO performance. So, what could have been the issue with the D6? The loudness of the shutter! (see my article on Nikon DSLR shutter noise levels at https://www.robertallen-photography.com/blog/how-loud-are-nikon-dslr-camera-shutters ).

As a professional event photographer, when shooting in a quiet room when someone is making a speech at the podium, believe me, you don’t want to be shooting with the D6! Prior to changing over to mirrorless, I used the D780 as my main event camera, mainly because it had a mirrorless mode on it. With the D780, if you shot with the rear LCD panel, it essentially became a mirrorless DLSR since it used the same autofocus system employed in the Z6 when shooting using the rear screen.

OK, back to the D6. It was a fantastic body and really eclipsed all of their other flagship DSLR cameras. I shot a total of 9,979 photos with the D6, according to my Capture One library. Not a lot of photos by my standards (especially considering it shoots at 14 frames per second) but again, I didn’t own it for very long due to the shutter noise.

Here are a few photos shot with the D6 with an assortment of lenses. These are from a mixture of paid and personal assignments. Let me know in the comments below if you owned the D6 or if you have any questions about the camera.

I have finally setup my first single topic portfolio on aviation. Aviation is one of the subjects that I seek out, both when at home and while traveling. It’s been a passion of mine for a long time. Hence, I have accumulated a lot of portfolio worthy content from shooting mostly planes over the years.

The proof is in the pudding as they say so take a look yourself at:

Let me know what you think in the comments below. Tell me if I need to remove any photos that don’t make the cut.

There will be more single topic portfolios in the future so stay tuned. Even the aviation one will change with new additions going forward.

Nikon has mentioned that the Z8 is the mirrorless version of the D850. While they may spin it that way in their marketing approach, I’m not convinced of this. Within Nikon’s current line of DSLRs, the D850 is the high resolution camera and the flagship D single number series (D6) have lower resolution but have higher frame rates. Within their Z line of cameras, this pattern is not the case. The Z8 and the flagship Z9 both have the same resolution sensor and frame rate. Now, if Nikon used the 66.8 MP Sony sensor found in the A7RVI camera and a lower frame rate for the Z8, then I would say the Z8 is the mirrorless version of the D850.

Now, let’s move on to what the title says this article is about; A specification comparison of the Nikon D850 and the Nikon Z8:

Let me know in the comments below (no sign in required) your thoughts. Is the Z8 the successor to the D850 or just a slimmed down Z9?
