Set against a backdrop of cosmic symbolism and communal connection, Morgan and Tiffane designed a wedding day that celebrated not only their love but also their commitment to their community and the values they hold dear. They were inspired by astrology, tarot, drag balls, their inclusive spiritual community, sumptuous textures, and unexpected colour palettes.

They wanted ritual and tradition, but on their own terms. As Tiffane explained, “We decided to have a more traditional ceremony at the chapel to check the box of having the feeling of what a wedding ‘should’ be: walking down the aisle, saying ‘I do’, sealing it with a kiss in front of our loved ones, and the symbol of our commitment to each other. We also knew that our marriage isn’t just about our commitment to each other but our commitment to our community and creating vows between us and those we love.”

They then performed a mandala ritual, a practice Tiffane created called Circles of Remembrance, which she has been using to facilitate community circles and officiate weddings for over a decade. “The mandala ceremony was so integral to our day,” she continued. “We set up an ancestral altar to invite in those who came before us and especially to honour my parents who passed away in my twenties. A candle was placed at the centre of the mandala to represent us. Each ring around the centre was created with symbolic items like marigolds, crystals, and other meaningful objects that correlated with significant groups of people in our lives. Guests were asked to place their item in the mandala to signify their commitment to us as individuals and as a married couple and to honour their role in our lives.”

They skipped the traditions that didn’t align with their values, such as the bouquet toss, taking off the garter, and having gendered wedding parties. “We wanted to unsubscribe from traditional bride and groom roles,” they explained. “One part of planning we did find frustrating was vendors who couldn’t seem to understand that Morgan is not a bride. The wedding industry needs to work harder to educate themselves on what it really means to be affirming of trans and nonbinary folx. We were fortunate enough to find and be able to hire Jasmine, our wedding planner, and she helped us connect to vendors who really got us.”

The reception was an unapologetic celebration of joy and self-expression. Guests were treated to a t-shirt toss from the balcony, and there was live funk music, tarot card readings, a whiskey and cigar bar, a Dolly Parton drag queen, and a lip-sync competition. “Our guests really brought it,” Morgan said. “Multiple costume changes, wigs on wigs, and jaw-dropping choreography. It was a little unhinged, and we’d do it all over again if we could.”

Flowers were their biggest expense, but they were worth every penny. Tiffane worked closely with Brittany and Doug at The Flowerslinger to create sculptural arrangements that evolved in colour and texture throughout the day. “I was devastated by the idea of our flowers going to waste,” she explained. “Our planner and The Flowerslinger donated them to The Grateful Vase, which repurposes florals for nursing homes. As a former hospice worker, this was such a meaningful touch. The flowers were worth every penny, and we will never EVER be over it.”

Finding their outfits was another highlight, but for Tiffane in particular, not without its challenges. After countless disappointments, she found High Vibe Bride in Kansas City. They not only created a pink, ethereal, and perfectly campy dress for her but also incorporated a silk flower from her late mother’s wedding veil. “It was the only shop I tried anything on at, and my experience was above and beyond. Fat people get married, and we don’t all want to wear white sleeveless dresses.”

Reflecting on their day, one of their favourite moments was sharing private vows before the ceremony because those vows were really what it was all about. “It was the sweetest moment of the day,” they concluded. “It put us behind schedule, but we wouldn’t have traded it for anything.”

If you’re reading Rock n Roll Bride, its highly likely that you had an emo phase… but that actually it wasn’t a phase at all. You’re probably still loving all things checkerboard, wearing too much black eyeliner and internally debating whether you’re team Vans or team Converse.

If you love the idea of an emo themed wedding then read on because here’s how you can pull it off without it just becoming a mid-2000s costume party.

Decide What Emo Means to You

The term covers everything from early post-hardcore and Midwest emo to pop-punk crossovers, MCR theatrics and the “scene” style of the late 2000s.

Start by gathering references from the bands, albums, venues and fashion that you both love. Definitely look beyond just wedding content. Old gig posters, music videos, album artwork, tour merchandise and photographs from club nights will give you a really clear direction and make it feel more authentic, too.

Then choose a few recurring ideas rather than trying to include every possible reference.

Build Your Colour Palette

Black remains the obvious foundation, but it does not have to end there. You could add oxblood, deep purple, silver, dirty pink, neon green or bright red. Pick two or three main colours and repeat them across your stationery, flowers, outfits and table settings to keep the styling cohesive.

Choose the Right a Venue

An emo themed wedding just isn’t going to hit the same in a stately home or golf club as it will in a music venue, an old theatre or a warehouse. A blank canvas like a photography studio or village hall can work too, especially if you bring in a stage, lighting and lots of DIY décor ideas. Ask potential venues about live music, sound limits, finish times and decoration restrictions before booking.

Design Invitations Like Gig Ephemera

Your invitations offer the first opportunity to establish the theme to your guests so why not design them to look like gig tickets, photocopied zines, album sleeves or posters from a fictional tour? There are even companies who make music inspired lanyards and wristbands for weddings.

Wear Something That Feels Like You

A black wedding dress or suit with accents of skulls, spikes, chains and ted tartan is a great place to start. Add platform boots, a coloured veil and leather jackets to compete the look. Black isn’t the only option though. A white dress styled with heavy eyeliner, scuffed Converse and a long coloured veil can just look as alternative. And your tattoos are the best accessory!

Start with clothes you already enjoy wearing and push the idea further. A wedding outfit should feel connected to your usual style rather than assembled from somebody else’s checklist of alternative fashion.

Treat the Music Like a Headline Act

Choose songs connected to different points in your history together. Include the tracks you screamed in nightclubs, played during long car journeys and sent each other when saying the actual words felt impossible.

Your ceremony entrance could use an acoustic or orchestral version of a favourite song. The reception can move from emotional singalongs into a full pop-punk club night. A live band will add the atmosphere of a gig, particularly if they can build a set around the music you love.

Ask guests to submit requests with their RSVPs or create a playlist spanning several eras of emo, pop-punk and post-hardcore.

Decorate With Records, Lyrics and Gig Posters

Pull inspiration from teenage bedrooms and record shops rather than conventional wedding styling. Stack old amps beside the ceremony backdrop. Display vinyl records, framed lyrics, battered gig tickets and photographs from your younger years. Disco balls always have a place, too.

You could create centrepieces from black taper candles, metallic tableware, dark foliage or red flowers. Use guitar picks as place cards and old band posters can become table numbers.

Utilising vinyl, CDs or cassette tapes is another good way to establish the theme. You can use them as table markers, on the table plan or even as a guest book for everyone to sign.

Avoid buying piles of generic wedding decorations simply because they’re black. Personal memorabilia will give the day much more character.

Choose Flowers With Some Drama

Flowers can lean dark and unruly, with anthuriums, calla lilies, roses, amaranthus and twisted branches. Add dried foliage, berries, feathers or metallic elements for more texture.

A bouquet made from dried flowers, fabric, chains, paper lyrics or brooches can work too. Your flowers do not need to communicate “emo” on their own. The colours, containers and styling around them will make the connection.

Give the Cake a Subtle Emo Twist

A black wedding cake, blood-red piping or a heart-shaped vintage cake will fit the mood. Ask your cake designer about silver details, dark cherries, handwritten lyrics or decoration inspired by a favourite album cover.

Add Details From Your Own Lives

The strongest ideas will come from your own relationship with the music and emo culture. Why not frame a setlist from the first gig you attended together, name a cocktail after the song playing when you met or wear the band T-shirt you bought on your first date during the reception?

You could also display photographs from your teenage years, give guests custom guitar picks as favours or create a wedding newspaper styled like a music zine.

And just remember, it was never a phase. It was always part of you, and your wedding should be too.

It’s the middle of summer. You’ve shot three weddings in the last six days. Your hard drives are full, your inbox contains several polite variations of “When will our film be ready?” and you haven’t had an evening away from your editing software since May. Congratulations, it must be peak wedding season as a wedding videographer.

Being fully booked sounds like the dream when you’re building a wedding business… until you realise you don’t have a seamless editing system in place. In a way it’s inevitable. You’re loved-up and laughing with your favourite people; half-cut, catching up, and hugging hello. It’s going to go quickly. But it doesn’t have to vanish. You can slow it down, and plan it around you. Give yourselves time to savour it, live in it, experience it.

Be kind to your future selves. Don’t plan a race. Plan a stroll.

Enjoy the Day Before

Oh, how I would’ve loved a spa day. Just me and a few friends having massages, saunas and hot tubs. Maybe a cheeky facial, or a hot-towel shave. A nice meal afterwards (oh God, I sound old). But you get what I mean, right?

It doesn’t have to be a spa day. You could have a round of golf with your dad, or get your nails done with friends. You could book into the venue the night before, and have a night of nostalgia, pizza, and champagne. My point is, your wedding doesn’t have to start on your wedding day. Gather your favourite people around you, pamper yourselves silly, and soak in that ‘nearly there’ excitement of the day before.

Easy Like Sunday Morning

“Oh shit, is that the time? Where’s my dress?! And the shoes? Yep, yep, that was funny. Hold that thought. No, I don’t want a fucking croissant. Has anyone booked the Uber? 20 minutes?! Fuuuuuucccckkkk!”

It’s not about that.

Your wedding morning has the potential to be the best morning of your life. Chatting with your best friends, telling stories, and listening to music. Getting all excited and happy-nervous together; feeling beautiful, calm, and loved.

OR! It could be a wildly-stressful whirlwind of rage. With clock-watching, chaos, and cortisol on tap.

The good news is, this is completely in your hands. Ask your suppliers (your photographer, your hair and MUA) how long you’ll need to get ready. Work backwards from the ceremony, and give yourselves an extra hour. At least. And then you can properly chill. Spend more time with your besties, open another bottle, put on another tune.

When minutes are precious, an hour is gold.

Have a First Look

This will be your new favourite memory.

Just a few minutes away from the mayhem. Seeing each other for the first time on your wedding day; sharing *that* moment, just the two of you. You could read love letters, or share personal vows. Or just have a kiss and a cuddle, connect and catch up. Sure, it’s a wedding photographer’s dream, but it doesn’t have to be about that. In fact (and they’ll hate me for saying this), there’s nothing to say your photographer has to be there at all.

Cocktail Hours

You want to be able to talk to everyone. Properly talk to them, I mean, not just “nice hat, thanks for coming” small talk. And it takes time to have a decent conversation with that many people. Then there’s the post-ceremony Boomer faffing (“Where do we go now? Oh look, it says it on the thing. Is that the postcode?”). Then you’ve got group shots, walking time, and ‘can I just grab you quickly?’ couple shots. Trying to fit all that into 60 minutes will just stress you the fuck out. It should feel like the best family meal, not the world’s weirdest speed date.

So, give yourselves time. Make your cocktail hour two hours long; 90 minutes at least. It’ll give you real quality time with everyone you care about and it also serves as a handy cushion in case your ceremony overruns.

“And how do we find that extra time?”, I hear you ask. Well…

It’s OK to Say No

Your wedding day is filled with things you don’t actually need to do. Confetti, cake cutting, first dance, couple’s shots, group shots, sparklers (*deep breath*), champagne sprays, champagne pours, smoke bombs, outfit changes…

There are so many expectations, viral trends, and “oh but you have to…” traditions. And if you say yes to all of it, you won’t have time to enjoy any of it. So, learn to say no. Don’t pander to the masses, or people-please your parents. Set clear boundaries and priorities, and plan the day you want.

All you *need* to do is say ‘I do’. Everything else is a choice. 

Make Time for You

My wife and I got married on the beach in Whitstable. We went for a wander after dinner, and found a couple of deck chairs waiting for us on the sand. We sat down in the evening sun, and chatted about the day. Our favourite bits, the moments we’d always remember. Watching our wedding bubbling away in the distance; parents chatting to friends, friends meeting each other for the first time. It was the only chance we got to actually spend time with each other.

So, trust me…plan this time in. Leave an empty half an hour after dinner. Leave everyone behind – your friends, your family, your photographer – and give yourselves space to just be.

Have a Bolthole

This is the Social Battery Olympics. Everyone wants to talk to you, thank you, congratulate you, dance with you, buy you a drink. And it’s lovely. But it can be overwhelming (especially if you’re not ‘crowds and people’ kinda people). Sometimes it’s nice to just go and sit in a room, you know? Close the door behind you, and lay on the bed. Be quiet. Scroll. Have a peaceful poo. It’s not rude or selfish to have 10 minutes to yourself. Book a room on-site, and if you’re social battery is tapped, sneak away for a little recharge.

Plan a Spacious Timeline

Once upon a time – back when passports were red, and money was easy – my wife and I went to Paris. And oh man, we *did* Paris. Nineteen miles from sunrise to sunset. Cathedrals, museums, and famous fountains. The Eiffel Tower, The Louvre, and one gigantic roundabout. It was a race, a tickbox, a list of Things to Do. And in our hurry to do everything, we didn’t actually enjoy anything.

It’s the same with wedding days. You cram in as much as you possibly can, and it turns into this exhausting experience where every minute is spoken for. Where everything is rushed, and the clock rules all. So, when you’re planning your timeline, make it spacious. Get ready early, mingle for hours. Leave extra time to enjoy your food. If you have 15 minutes free, leave them free.

Don’t try to do everything. Just do the important things, and give yourselves time to enjoy them.

Because you wanna know what my favourite part of Paris was? It was the free morning we had before we caught the train home.

And that’s my whole point really. The moments you’ll remember most from your wedding won’t be the ones you rushed through, the boxes you ticked or the fact you spoke to every person there. They’ll be the ones you actually had time to live in.

When Amber and Casey met, they quickly realised they had something in common – they shared the same birthday, August 11th! Now they can add another memory to the date, as their wedding story is being published on their birthday too.

These two clearly have a gift for calendar coordination. Casey proposed on 12/22/24 in what Amber describes as “true Hallmark Christmas movie fashion”, and they chose their six-year anniversary, 02/22/26, for the wedding. Their shared surname supplied the theme, “Goode Times” which became a technicolour universe filled with rock music, retro television, childhood toys and pop culture references.

“We both grew up loving the 80s and 90s, and we still fall asleep to The Golden Girls every night, so bringing our favourite movies, television, music, and pop culture into the celebration felt completely natural”, Amber explained.

The bride, an actress and producer with a degree in interior design, approached the wedding as a year-long creative production. She combined commissioned pieces, Etsy finds and personalised templates, handling much of the design herself. There were Golden Girls figures, ALF, Beavis and Butt-Head, plus cars from Back to the Future and Knight Rider appeared throughout the décor. Their cake toppers were Trolls.

Each reception table had its own monochromatic colour scheme, with matching flowers, candles, lamps, menus and butterfly place cards. Together, the tables formed a room-sized rainbow. The ceremony’s floral heart was moved behind the sweetheart table for the reception. A teal ombré backdrop and hot-pink Goode Times neon sign created a photo spot that stayed busy throughout the night.

Every table also received a Chief Vibes Officer, identified by a 1990s-style Goode Times slap bracelet. Their mission cards instructed them to organise a table selfie, record a message for the couple, encourage people onto the dance floor and visit the audio guestbook. It was part icebreaker, part hype squad and an effective way to recruit guests into Amber and Casey’s production.

On arrival, guests were given Goode-y Bags, a custom newspaper, and cat-inspired cocktails. There were even celebrity cardboard around the place including her fave, Pee-wee Herman. “Because I’m completely obsessed with Pee-wee Herman, there was no question he’d be part of our wedding. Our ring bearer dressed as Pee-wee and proudly carried Chairry down the aisle, while guests were greeted by life-size celebrity cardboard cutouts of Pee-wee, Bob Ross, Mr. T, Dr. Evil, Chris Farley, Marilyn Monroe (who I actually used to work as her look-alike!), and even giant versions of ourselves. Every reception table featured its own monochromatic colour story with coordinated florals, candles, lamps, menus, and custom details, making each table feel like its own little work of art.”

Guests were also encouraged to wear colour, funky prints and florals. Amber led the charge in a custom pink ombré gown from Lauren Elaine Bridal while Casey wore teal. In the evening she changed into a November Rain music video-inspired look, which she kept on colourful theme with a neon pink veil.

“We just love nostalgia and wanted our guests to feel like kids again. To step back into a time when life felt a little simpler, music was unforgettable, movies became part of who we were, Saturday morning cartoons still existed, and nobody was staring at a phone all day. We wanted everyone to relive the Goode Times.”

Their first dance was Toto’s Georgy Porgy, the same track Casey used during his proposal, and cut their cake to Rick Astley’s Never Gonna Give You Up. The dance floor then filled up quickly as songs from the 70s, 80s and 90s were played all night. At the end of the evening, they did a final dance to Chris Cornell’s version of Thank You by Led Zeppelin, the same song the bride walked down the aisle to, for a private last moment.

For Amber, this was a lot of work, “At times it felt like I had accidentally taken on a full-time creative director job on top of planning a wedding”, she admits, “But throughout this entire process, Casey never once asked me to tone down my ideas or question my vision. He never said, ‘Do we really need six celebrity cardboard cut-outs?’ Instead, he trusted me completely and somehow became just as excited about every colourful, nostalgic, wonderfully over-the-top idea as I was. Looking back, I realise the greatest love story wasn’t just the one we celebrated on our wedding day. It was having a partner who celebrated me every step of the way. He gave me permission to be my fullest, brightest self, and that’s a gift I’ll never take for granted.”

Amber has one final person to thank. “Last but not least…I want to thank me. I’d like to thank me for becoming a professional wedding planner against my will, for keeping Canva, Etsy and Amazon in business for a year, and for somehow convincing everyone that six life-size celebrity cardboard cutouts were a completely reasonable idea. Looking back…I’d absolutely do it all again!”
