The Right of the Month for January is a simple one and something typically abled people often take for granted. It's the right to take a day off. Typically abled people can generally just call in sick or take a day off just because they feel like it. It's not always that easy for a person with a disability who lives in a certified residence and needs extra care. Join Alex, Engelic, Kaitlin, Gay, Theresa and Rick Banner, Director of the Advocacy Department at People Inc. as they discuss the rights and also the responsibilities involved with the seemingly simple act of taking a day off.
Sometimes when people with disabilities live in shared living arrangements and even when living independently certain things that a great many of us take for granted can become an issue. Things like going to church, voting, even opening your own mail may require special arrangements. But that doesn't mean that they are any less of an individual right.

People Inc. has created an initiative called the Right of the Month. Each month they focus on a right that many typically abled people do without thinking.

We've put together a round table panel of self advocates and staff to discuss the November Right of the Month, which is...

I Have the Right to Invite Visitors and Guests into my Home...
Yup you read that right, never thought this was something you'd have to discuss huh? It's something that people who live in shared living arrangements have to deal with regularly.
Greetings to our listeners and welcome to our first Self Advocacy in Action Audio Podcast of the new year 2017 I'm Jim Jowsey, the guy behind the board and we've got a great show for you. One of the definitions of the word "Wellness" is the state of being in good health, especially as an actively pursued goal. That means not just reacting to things that happen to you, it means going out there and purposely doing things that are GOOD for you. One of these things is managing stress, and meditation is a great way to accomplish this. Whether you go the full nine yards with incense on a mountain top or just take a few minutes each day to center yourself and relax your brain, the positive affects are real.

Noel Schmitt is a friend of ours that we've know for many years. She's a self described "Lifer" in Human Services and has had a hand in creating many positive outcomes for the people that she serves. For the past few years Noel has been developing and teaching meditation classes to the people we serve to help people learn to relax, center themselves and increase their wellness.

Engelic and Avery recently spent some time with Noel in the studio to talk about this great initiative and some of Noel's history in general.
