Google Ads smart bidding update is ragging in the PPC community, is it a broader change or not? Did Google Maps drop its OpenTable reservations integration? Google renamed NotebookLM Useragent To Google-GeminiNotebook. Google has updated the help document named How to fix: Google StoreBot crawler can’t access your in-store product page. Microsoft Bing is testing using a black colored magnifying glass in the search bar and box. And I posted the weekly SEO video recap.
This week, we saw some Google Search ranking volatility around July 11th, so I called it the 7-Eleven update. Bing said it does not do one-off search penalties because it is not scalable. Google Images celebrated its 25th anniversary...
The PPC community has been going wild over the change that is coming to Google Ads around bidding for campaigns limited by budget on August 18th. There is some belief that this is going to be a broader smart bidding update than what Google communicated.

Did Google Maps Turn Off OpenTable Reservations?
Google has removed its help document named "Make OpenTable reservations in Google Maps" yesterday. It looks like that implies that Google Maps removed the integration it has with restaurant listings and making reservations with OpenTable.

Google Renamed NotebookLM Useragent To Google-GeminiNotebook
As many of you know, Google has user-triggered fetchers including Google-NotebookLM. But with NotebookLM being renamed to Gemini Notebook, Google had to update the user agent name of Google-NotebookLM to Google-GeminiNotebook.

Google StoreBot Accessibility Issues Help Document Updated
Google has updated the help document named How to fix: Google StoreBot crawler can’t access your in-store product page. The document has a number of big updates with a lot of clarifications including the user-agents, checking robots.txt, blocking IP addresses, page speed issues, reprocessing and how long it takes for your landing pages to be reprocessed.
Microsoft Bing is testing using a black colored magnifying glass in the search bar and box. This is instead of a gray or black outlined icon, the test is a fully colored in icon.

            Volleyball At Google Office
Google's Seattle office has a volleyball court, so does the Mountain View office but here are some Googlers or maybe kids playing volleyball at the office there. We saw Googlers playing during COVID with masks and we even some professional volleyball players at Google.

The PPC community has been going wild over the change that is coming to Google Ads around bidding for campaigns limited by budget on August 18th. There is some belief that this is going to be a broader smart bidding update than what Google communicated.

We covered this in detail back on June 2nd, which I have been updating with Google comments, plus we covered it before on June 15th. In short, Google Ads reps are downplaying this change, while the PPC community is up in arms about it. It is weird to see.

That being said, Maggie Humphrey asked a solid question in a LinkedIn post from Joey Binder. Maggie asked:

What gets me is Google says this should only impact campaigns that are "Limited by Budget," but they also say they're changing the bidding systems to provide more predictable performance. That sounds like a broader Smart Bidding update to me. If the new bidding behavior is less conservative from the start, it seems like we're simply sacrificing excess efficiency so Google can spend more while calling it "predictability."

Ginny Marvin, the Google Ads Liaison, replied:

Yes this only impacts budget-constrained campaigns using a target because this is already the bidding behavior when campaigns using a target aren't budget constrained.

This change ensures expected bidding behavior will be the same regardless of whether a campaign using a target is budget-constrained or not. And that if advertisers do opt to change budgets on budget-constrained campaigns, they should expect more stable performance behavior as the campaign scales.

Performance has often fluctuated unexpectedly, especially in budget-limited campaigns, as the budget is changed. This has been a frustrating experience for advertisers, making it difficult to scale campaigns with confidence. That's what this change aims to address.

In short we're making the controls clearer; the target will more precisely control your ROI.

Maggie asked for clarification saying:

Just want to make sure I'm interpreting this correctly, if a campaign on tROAS bidding is exceeding its target but not Limited By Budget it will continue to behave as it does today. But, if/when that same campaign becomes Limited By Budget, we should expect that campaign ROAS to drop closer to the current target, unless budget is increased?

Ginny replied:

To answer your question:

Nothing is changing in the way the bidding system works when campaigns using a target are not budget constrained, and you're correct that those campaigns will continue to behave as they do today. Typically these campaigns do tend to perform toward the bid target.

If the campaign does become limited by budget, you should not expect to see a change in the average target performance because the expected bidding behavior will be the same regardless of whether the campaign is limited by budget or not after this update goes into effect.

I asked Greg Finn to go into more detail on this back and forth on our It's New show yesterday, he did so at the 10:10 mark in this video:

It is worth watching his 6 minute overview on this change.

Forum discussion at LinkedIn.

Google spoke about indexing issues because of content quality issues and some AI-generated content. Apple Maps Ads has banned home service ads from its platform, which is not what Google does at all. Gary Illyes from Google said that you are better off not using a lastmod date in your XML Sitemap if those dates are wrong. Google Ads updated its Performance Max product level reporting back on June 15th. You can no longer manually add or update products directly in Google Manufacturer Center. Google will consolidate and merge the Shopping ads and free listings policies into a single Shopping policy sometime in September 2026. Google sent out an email to Google Ads advertisers, noting that it will turn on local inventory ads by default in your Shopping campaigns.

Apple has posted new Apple Maps policies where it now says it is prohibiting home services, such as plumbing, electrical, locksmith, HVAC, pest control, roofing, or general contracting services. It also says bail bonds, cryptocurrency ATMs and some medical services are also banned from Apple Maps Ads.

Google just sent out an email to Google Ads advertisers noting that it will turn on local inventory ads by default in your Shopping campaigns. Google added that you can change this setting by August 31st by using the "inventory filter" instead of the "Local products" setting.

Google's John Mueller and Martin Splitt spoke about the Google Search Console indexing report in its latest Search Off the Record podcast. One item was on how quality issues, including low-quality AI-generated content, can result in those pages not being trusted and not being indexed by Google. That might lead to the page indexing report showing a "crawled - currently not indexed" status, in some cases.

He is not outright saying AI-generated content is bad, but if you read it and it screams AI-generated, then that might be a bad thing. If it reads that anyone could have wrote it, that there is nothing new and unique - then why would Google decide to index the page. That can lead to site quality issues and thus indexing issues. This is not a new topic, we covered it countless times.

Martin Splitt asked John Mueller:

And if we haven't visited them, we can't put them in the index versus "crawled - currently not indexed," which means we visited them and we didn't put them in the index, and that can have all sorts of different reasons. Would you say that that is often or only sometimes a sign of a quality issue?

John Mueller answered:

Sometimes. So it's definitely the case if our systems are seriously worried about the quality of a website, that they will reduce the number of pages that they index. Because if we'"if we have strong concerns about the overall quality, then it doesn't make much sense for our systems to spend a lot of time on the website. So we'll probably crawl a lot less, we'll index a lot less. And then you'll see things like "crawled not indexed" or "discovered not indexed." Which from our point of view is basically our system saying we know about this. And once we're happy'"we looked at it'"once we're happy, we will take another look and see if we can index it. It's not so much that I would say you should take these situations and try to fix them.

Like from a technical point of view. It's not that you need to fix this technical issue that Google is not indexing this page at the moment. But rather, you almost need to, when you recognize a bigger pattern like this'"like Google is not indexing a lot of your pages and there's no technical reason'"you almost need to take a step back and think about the quality overall. And thinking about quality is really challenging because a lot of times it's your
website and it's your baby, and of course it's the best baby ever. But taking a step back and trying to look at it with the eyes of someone who is not directly involved with your website, sometimes that opens up some ideas for areas where you can improve. Where maybe if most of your website is AI generated and it worked for a while, it might be that people look at this AI-generated site and they're like, "Well, I can tell this is AI generated. There's nothing unique or valuable that is available here for me." That's not to say that all AI-generated content is bad. But sometimes you'"you just run across websites where you're like, "Anyone could have written this. This tells me nothing."

Here is the video, it starts at 20:32 in:

Forum discussion at LinkedIn.

This report now uses data from all Performance Max networks, rather than the subset it previously pulled from.

Bia Camargo spotted this change and posted about it on LinkedIn (hat tip PPC News Feed). The notice from Google read:

Starting in June 2026, product reporting has expanded. Previously, product performance metrics such as cost and conversions were only available for products included in Performance Max ads serving on Search networks and Standard Shopping campaigns.

You'll now find a comprehensive set of metrics for your products across certain campaigns that use Google Merchant Center. This includes data for all networks in Performance Max campaigns, as well as metrics for video, app and Demand Gen campaigns.

This may cause a one-time increase in metrics such as impressions, clicks and more for Performance Max campaigns only.

Bia posted her "translation" which reads, "a bunch of accounts are about to show a one-time jump in impressions and clicks. Not because performance changed. Because the reporting scope did."

Some FAQs for your clients, she added:

If a client asks "why did impressions spike overnight," the answer isn't a win, it's a measurement change

Gary Illyes from Google said that you are better off not using a lastmod date in your XML Sitemap if those dates are wrong. He said on Bluesky, "probably better off without the lastmods. at least you save a few bytes."

This answer was in response to 'ªJason Kilgore's question, which asked:

Would a site be better off with no lastmod date at all on any pages? Or one where the lastmod date isn't reliable/trusted (given the binary nature of Google's trust on this)? We found a bug manifesting a set of unintentionally incorrect dates.

This really isn't new advice, as Google has said before that Google would trust or not trust the lastmod date based on if that date has been used correctly on your site or not. You should only change the lastmod date for significant changes to the web page, only when there is something new, not for copyright changes, Google said. Google also spoke about changing the lastmode date too frequently, It was so bad that back in 2015, Google said it mostly ignored the lastmod date but in 2017 changed course with that language. John Mueller said changing the lastmod date is not an SEO hack.

Here are those new posts on this topic that I covered above:

In short, use the lastmod date correctly and don't try to trick Google.

Forum discussion at Bluesky.

Google added that you can change this setting by August 31st by using the "inventory filter" instead of the "Local products" setting.

Arpan Banerjee received the email and posted about it on LinkedIn saying, "this notice applies to manager accounts with Shopping campaigns linked to a Merchant Center account that has the local inventory ads add-on enabled."

The email says:

Local inventory ads will now be turned on by default in your Shopping campaigns. You can change this setting by using the "Inventory filter" instead of the "Local products" setting.

You're receiving this message because your Google Ads manager account (Customer ID) has Shopping campaigns that are associated with a Merchant Center account that has the local inventory ads add-on turned on.

What's changing?

Currently, there are 2 settings in Shopping campaigns that allow you to control local inventory ads running in a campaign. To avoid duplication, the "Local products" drop-down will be removed from the "Other settings" section of the campaign. Instead, you can filter data using the "Inventory" filter setting.

If you'd like to separate your online and local budgets, review your Shopping campaigns before 08/31/2026 and update your "Inventory" filter settings using Channel = Local or Online.

Here is a screenshot of that email:

Forum discussion at LinkedIn.
