A coded letter carrying a message from Napoleon Bonaparte to one of his senior generals has been cracked by AI after 217 years. The contents of the letter, sent by Eugène, Napoleon’s stepson, on the emperor’s instructions, had remained a mystery since it was sent to Auguste de Marmont in 1809. However, Carter Church, an AI engineer at cybersecurity company SentinelOne, said this week he had used OpenAI’s GPT-6 Astra system to decrypt and transcribe the message for the first time. Drivers have been warned that the smart features built into modern cars such as microphones, cameras and GPS trackers could be used by hostile states to spy on them. The Dutch General Intelligence and Security Service (AIVD) called for “awareness of espionage risks around modern vehicles”, including microphones that can by switched on remotely to listen to conversations. It did not mention an individual country, but the warning will add to concerns around a recent boom in Chinese car imports into the UK. The Guardian 

The winning entry of a prestigious scientific photography competition is being re-evaluated following criticism from other scientists that it was made with AI. Nikon’s annual Small World In Motion contest accepts photos and video taken using powerful microscopes, and has run annually for the last 15 years. The winner was a short video submitted by Dr Ning Xu, a researcher at Tsinghua University in China, which claims to be footage of tiny, hair-like structures called cilia moving inside the airways of a child with a rare disease. Xu did not respond to the BBC’s request for comment, but has posted online denying he broke the competition rules. BBC

A German rocket firm has been granted a launch licence by UK regulators – and it plans to blast off from the Shetland Islands early next year. HyImpulse, which builds commercial rockets, received the launch operator licence on Thursday from the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA). The company was granted the right to launch after it passed a regulatory review process. HyImpulse is aiming to launch its SR75 suborbital vehicle in spring 2027. The rocket will be used for a number of research projects, with its design set to help it take off in a wider array of environmental conditions. Sky News

King Charles has warned AI executives of the “existential dangers” posed by the technology falling into the wrong hands. He made the comments at a summit he had convened at Dumfries House in Ayrshire to discuss how the tech can be used to benefit society. Those gathered at the meeting also included Kanishka Narayan, the UK’s AI Minister, the Pope’s advisor, and participants from AI giants such as Nvidia, OpenAI and Anthropic. Cybersecurity researchers have hacked into OpenAI with the help of Anthropic’s Claude chatbot, in the latest example of security issues at the company. A team at a US-based startup compromised a number of OpenAI employees’ ChatGPT accounts, starting a process that enabled them to access their target’s software cache – and potentially more. “The scope of what we could theoretically access was huge,” said researchers at Hacktron AI. GTA 5 has suffered a new leak that suggests Rockstar Games had ambitious, city-sized DLC plans for the game. Reports emerging online today indicate a near 200GB version of the GTA 5 source code initially leaked in 2023 has now been made public, and interested parties are analyzing it as we speak. Technology company Dyson has expanded its high-end consumer offering with the Dyson CameraJet, its very first electric toothbrush.

Known for disrupting traditional markets with bagless vacuums and bladeless fans, the company spent over a decade and employed 661 engineers to develop an electric toothbrush that aims to combine brushing, flossing, and mouth-washing into a single device.

The centrepiece of the CameraJet is a built-in, 100,000-pixel macro-lens camera positioned near the brush head. Operating as a high-quality endoscope, the lens records 28 images per second, streaming live footage straight to the MyDyson smartphone app so users can watch a live view from inside their mouths while cleaning.

Powered by an artificial intelligence algorithm trained on 470,000 dental images, the camera identifies gaps between teeth in real time. When a gap is detected, a precision jet instantly releases a burst of mouthwash to clear out plaque, eliminating what founder James Dyson calls an “awkward and time-consuming chore.”

To maintain functionality, the brush features a pressurised “anti-gravity” 12.5-millilitre tank that lets it spray even when held upside down. Because traditional foaming toothpaste would obscure the camera lens, Dyson has also formulated its own non-foaming toothpaste and mouth rinse, available in Ginger Mint and Spearmint variants.

Why is it so expensive?

With a steep price tag of £420 for the hardware, and dedicated toothpaste and mouth rinse refills costing £8.50 each, the CameraJet sits firmly at the ultra-luxury end of the dental market.

The extraordinary cost reflects the immense engineering, research, and advanced hardware packed into the handle. Developing a miniature, waterproof macro-camera system capable of high-speed machine learning processing, paired with precision fluid dynamics and Wi-Fi connectivity, requires advanced micro-engineering far beyond standard electric toothbrushes, the manufacturer claims.

Furthermore, Dyson’s extensive testing protocols – including the creation of artificial “proxy plaque” to measure cleaning efficacy – added years of overhead to the project.

Despite its technological marvels, dental professionals note that such high-end gizmos are not strictly necessary. Eddie Crouch, chair of the British Dental Association, cautioned that patients should not assume high-priced gadgets replace a proper routine, emphasising that standard twice-daily brushing and traditional flossing remain the gold standard.

For early adopters willing to pay a premium, however, Dyson’s CameraJet offers a glimpse into the future of high-tech personal care.

A British man has become the first person in the world to have a brain tumour removed via AI-assisted surgery. Rhys Hibbert was operated on by surgeons at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery (NHNN), part of University College London (UCL) Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. Live artificial intelligence was utilised to identify miniscule anatomy in the brain. It colour-coded important structures to help surgeons know which areas to avoid while removing the tumour. Mr Hibbert, 48, said the operation – which took place in May – had saved his eyesight, and he is now back at work. Sky News 

Today WhatsApp has announced some improved security features. First off, two-step verification is getting stronger. Before, it was a six-digit PIN. From now on, it will be a full password – longer, alphanumeric, and with special characters, making it harder to guess. Next up, call security. When you pick up a call from someone who isn’t in your contacts, you’ll see more information about the caller, like whether their number is from a different country, or if you have any groups in common. Samsung has been ordered to pay Swatch Group $11.6mn after a judge found that hosting digital clones of luxury timepieces on its smartwatch app store was “very damaging” to the Swiss watchmaker. The High Court in London on Wednesday awarded damages for trademark infringement after finding the apps mimicked designs of Swatch Group brands including Breguet, Blancpain, Omega, Longines and Tissot. Samsung has been ordered to pay £8.53 million ($11.6 million) to Swatch Group after being found liable for trademark infringement over third-party smartwatch apps which copied luxury watch designs.

The ruling by the High Court in London concludes a lengthy legal battle concerning digital “watch face” applications hosted on Samsung’s Galaxy App Store between October 2015 and February 2019.

The apps mimicked iconic designs from high-end watchmakers owned by Swatch, including Omega, Breguet, Blancpain, Longines, and Tissot.

Although the software was created by independent developers, Swatch argued that Samsung was responsible for distributing the digital watch faces, which were downloaded roughly 160,000 times across the UK and European Union.

While Swatch had initially sought a staggering £125 million ($170 million) in damages, Mr Justice Smith awarded a significantly lower figure, though it still far exceeded Samsung’s stance that only a nominal sum of £220 ($300) was owed.

The majority of the payout – approximately £7.35 million ($10 million) – was issued for “store display infringements.” The judge drew a comparison to physical retail, equating Samsung’s app store to a supermarket shelf displaying counterfeit goods.

He ruled that featuring prestigious brand names alongside low-priced or free downloads was highly damaging to the luxury watchmaker’s property interests and demeaned the exclusivity of its brands.

Samsung was held accountable because it maintained control over the app review process and actively marketed its smartwatches using appealing display faces. The technology giant defended its actions by stating it removed the software immediately upon being notified of the issue and argued that Swatch’s claims were exaggerated.

In a statement following the decision, Samsung expressed that it is carefully reviewing the judgement and considering all potential countermeasures, including an appeal.

Meanwhile, Swatch criticised the tech company for attempting to downplay the scale of the infringement. Related legal proceedings initiated by Swatch in the United States have remained paused pending the outcome of the English litigation.

Legal experts note that the decision could carry broad implications for major tech companies and platform operators, highlighting their potential liability for copyrighted and trademarked content hosted within their application ecosystems.

Computer glitches have led to a soaring number of car breakdowns, new figures show. The AA said the number of breakdowns attributed to faulty electronics inside cars, known as body control modules (BCMs), had doubled in six years to become one of the top five causes of call-outs. More than 36,000 breakdowns involving the components, which control increasingly advanced car computer systems, were reported last year. BCMs act as the central hub of modern vehicles, controlling electric signals going to mirrors, lights and door locks. Telegraph 

Sony has announced the newest addition to its budget line of smartphones – enter the Sony Xperia 10 VIII. It offers a handful of upgrades over its predecessor, the Xperia 10 VII, and follows on from the Award-winning Xperia 10 VI. The new model boasts a claimed peak brightness that is double that of the previous smartphone to deliver “improved visibility even outdoors”, although Sony has not disclosed the exact figures. Spotify is to label AI artists and exclude them from algorithm recommendations as part of a crackdown on fake performers. The world’s largest music streaming platform is creating a label for AI-generated artist identities called “AI personas” that will appear on the artist profile and on track listings on playlists. It means that from September AI-generated artists such as the Velvet Sundown will carry the persona label and will be blocked from personalised recommendations by default. A farmer in China claims to have lost 25 acres of crops “overnight” after following pesticide advice from an AI assistant. Working from home has triggered a surge in male loneliness, a new study has claimed. Young men aged 18 to 25 now spend, on average two fifths of their waking hours – about 6.5 hours – on their own, the Resolution Foundation said on Wednesday. The Google Pixel 11 series is going official tomorrow at the Made by Google event. While most details about the lineup have already leaked, a new rumor has revealed details about the base Pixel 11’s telephoto camera. Cyber testers began investigating, poring through logs from tests the institute had conducted during the previous few days. What they found was unnerving. A powerful AI system, developed by the company Anthropic, embarked on a sophisticated two-day hacking spree, attempting to install malicious software, adopting fake identities to dupe human gatekeepers and then seeking to cover its tracks. New research from cybersecurity firm Surfshark highlights how easily public perception can be manipulated online, revealing that artificially generated engagement costs from $1.40 per 1,000 views. However, experts warn that the minimal cost of fake metrics is secondary to a more dangerous issue: a widespread cultural naivete and lack of scepticism among everyday users. According to Surfshark’s Chief Security Officer, Tomas Stamulis, internet users frequently trust advertisements and digital pages without question. Uber has pledged to spend more than $10bn expanding its robotaxi network, arguing its financial strength and more than 200mn customers will give it an edge in the intensifying race to commercialise autonomous vehicles. The ride-hailing group generated a record $2.8bn in free cash flow in the second quarter, taking its 12-month total to about $10.1bn as bookings continued to grow strongly. The SpaceX share price had been enjoying a resurgence in recent weeks, but when markets open it is set to plummet by more than 11 per cent – and it’s nothing to do with an out of control rocket. A long-since disused part of a Falcon 9 spacecraft which launched back in 2025 is believed to have crashed into the moon’s surface on Wednesday morning, reportedly hitting with the power of three tons of TNT and creating a new crater in the process. But it’s the first financial report released by the company which has had the bigger impact back on Earth’s financial markets – with up to $200bn (£148bn) set to be wiped from SpaceX’s value. An eight-month-old start-up headquartered in London has secured a $10bn (£7bn) deal with AI giant Anthropic. Wayve and Uber have moved a step closer to rolling out autonomous vehicles in London after Transport for London (TfL) granted private hire vehicle licences to a number of Wayve’s electric vehicles. The recent licensing achievement successfully fulfils the “triple-lock” regulatory requirement for private hire trips in the capital, which mandates that the operator, driver and vehicle must all hold valid licences issued by the same authority. Under the arrangement, the vehicles will operate autonomously using Wayve’s technology, while a trained, TfL-licensed private hire driver remains on board to supervise the trip, provide support, or take control of the steering wheel if necessary. Shares in Elon Musk’s SpaceX tumbled after the company’s first-ever earnings report revealed a huge jump in spending on artificial intelligence, spooking investors. Cutting-edge AI went on a hacking spree, concocting multiple fake identities designed to trick human engineers before covering its tracks. During testing by a UK government-run AI lab, an advanced version of ChatGPT and Anthropic’s Mythos went rogue. In the most serious case, Mythos sent fraudulent emails and attempted to insert malicious code into a database. Britain’s AI Security Institute (AISI), which is supposed to evaluate AI bots for dangerous cyber capabilities, has admitted the tools tried to bypass security systems and tried to hide their activity when detected. Shares in Elon Musk’s SpaceX have fallen sharply, tumbling nearly 9% in after-hours trading following the release of the company’s first earnings report since going public.

The steep decline was triggered by investor anxiety over soaring capital expenditure, driven primarily by an aggressive push into artificial intelligence and extensive data centre development.

While quarterly revenue nearly doubled to $7.8bn, spending skyrocketed to $18.3bn – more than six times higher than the previous year. This massive outlay led to a net loss of $143m for the three months leading up to June, pushing losses for the first half of the year to $2bn.

Despite the bruising numbers, Musk defended the corporate strategy during an investor call, insisting critics are underestimating the firm’s long-term roadmap. Musk outlined plans to scale computing capacity from 1.4 gigawatts to 10 gigawatts by next year, claiming that building data centres is a trivial problem compared to making reusable rockets.

While Wall Street weighed the high-stakes AI gamble, SpaceX also faced attention regarding a discarded rocket from a previous mission that has struck the lunar surface. Part of a discarded SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket – launched in January of last year carrying ispace’s Hakuto-R spacecraft – crashed into the moon at 8,700 kilometres per hour near the Einstein crater.

Astronomers worldwide trained telescopes on the impact site, which NASA predicts created a crater roughly 18 metres wide and 4 metres deep. The heavy payload required extra thrust during the 2025 launch, leaving the 14-metre, 4,000-kilogram upper stage floating uncontrollably before an unintended orbit put it on a collision course with the moon.

The lunar impact has reignited discussions over space debris regulation. Hannah Sargeant at the University of Leicester criticised the lack of mandatory deorbiting rules for commercial missions compared to government space agencies, noting: “It is not a good thing to be randomly sending debris into the moon. It’s not something we should be making a habit of. What if it hit a site of special interest? What if it caused damage to the historical Apollo landers?”

However, other researchers noted potential scientific benefits.
