As I walked through Central Park last week I noticed the first hints of green peeking through the chilly ground. Finally, it’s beginning to feel a lot like Spring! For me, Spring is about joy, fresh beginnings, planting seeds for the future, and reconnecting with ourselves. It just so happens to be my favorite time of year to refresh and revamp my home—to add fresh touches of style that enhance my existing space.

Spring is a fabulous time in general to refresh and Discover Your Style, and with such an abundance of styles and themes available, discovering the vibes that speak to you can be especially empowering. It grounds you, it instills a sense of confidence in your home, and it helps you respond to the world around you. Whether you’re drawn to the raw materials of an Urban Industrial look, or the warmth and rustic touches of a Country French cottage, having a sense of your own taste will guide you towards the best choices for your home.

I think that accessories and smaller objects are a great way to refresh a space and enhance a personal style. Sometimes the small touches have the biggest impact! You can use accessories to combine elements from different design traditions to create a home that’s uniquely yours. If your home leans mid-century and you also love a rustic touch, consider incorporating a few pillows or ceramics that offer a bit of that raw twist. When you’re connected to your own personal aesthetic, you find the tools and confidence to create a home that’s uniquely yours.

TRADITIONAL

A traditional home pays homage to grand and warm European design. There’s a sense of stability through rich and dark woods, an attention to architectural symmetry, and an element of historic comfort through generous fabrics and tufted upholstery. Antiques and pieces with a story generally fill a traditional home, and you’ll often find mixed patterns and prints. Of course, a traditional home doesn’t have to be so serious! Traditional homes can just as easily lean into something that’s casual and comfortable. A sense of timeless elegance is the key for what a traditional home evokes.

 

Robin Says: “I love including antiques as a design element! Whether you choose to layer them with other vintage pieces, or include them in spaces with more modern finishes, you’re sure to create a gorgeous vignette with a hint of tradition.”

TRANSITIONAL

A transitional home is just that—a space that bridges a classic and traditional sense of style with more contemporary touches. A transitional home will often emphasize clean lines and textures over decorated patterns and architectural motifs. You’ll see a more neutral color palette and an elevation of natural light with the addition of carefully curated vintage or antique pieces. The best part of a transitional home is that you get to choose where the transition lies. If you love stately and historic art or have a gorgeous piece of antique furniture, bring those elements into a space with clean-lined silhouettes and neutral fabrics to emphasize both modern and historic design traditions. Or you can begin with a sleek and modern canvas and invoke a sense of eclectic transition using sparks of tradition. I love using heirloom books or ceramics, antique lamps and one-of-a-kind finds to create this kind of ambiance.

  

Robin Says: “I think the Transitional style lies in the details. A lamp with a bit of color or a decorative ceramic accent with some glamor can catch the eye and be the bridge between two styles.”

MODERN

A modern home is deliberate and free of excess. These spaces often have strong yet clean lines, an elemental and monochromatic color palette, a sense of crispness and an intentional selection of accessories. Beautifully designed modern spaces are warm yet subdued, helping you focus on the present. You can, of course, combine the neutrality and utility of a modern home with bold splashes of color or large statement pieces with softer lines to emphasize and balance the elements in the space.

Robin Says: “Modern accessories can be dynamic because they tend to be focal points. Add a touch of modernity by choosing pieces with strength and movement.”

URBAN INDUSTRIAL

This distinct style has roots in grand and industrial spaces—old warehouses, urban factories and lofts. You’ll often find elements of exposed wood and metalwork, architectural motifs that speak to the history of the building, reclaimed pieces of wrought-iron, exposed brick and mechanical elements, and floor-plans that are open. You can play around with textures, raw materials and color to really make this style your own!

Robin Says: “When thinking about the Urban Industrial Style I like to pay attention to architecture and keep things urban and unexpected. Think about accessories with raw and industrial elements to add a bit of this style into your Spring refresh.”

MODERN FARMHOUSE

Elegant, refined yet rustic, the modern farmhouse aesthetic embodies an eclectic mix of comfortable and homey textures, patterns, organic materials and the chic cleanliness of a modern home. This style is casual yet refined, warm yet fresh. Pair oversized seating and welcoming patterns with straight edges and sleek finishes.

Robin Says: “I just adore accessories with a splash of color and texture when I’m working in a modern farmhouse style. Even unexpected fabrics like denim can add a touch of surprise when included in your decor.

COUNTRY FRENCH 

The country French home is a warm and welcoming space, one filled with painted wood finishes, charming and joyful patterns, and a connection to the organic through fabric and fresh flowers. Think linens, rustic accessories, carved wooden furniture, and bright, country colors—soft yellows, reds and blues. The country French style is undeniably inviting and happy, abundant and lively.

COASTAL BEACH

A vibe with a getaway feel, a coastal beach style incorporates the elements of comfort, warmth and easy living. Natural textures like wicker and linen add a particularly elegant touch, as do accessories that nod towards nature and the sea—shells, driftwood and coral.

ZEN

For those who seek a sense of peace in their homes, a zen style could be up your alley! Inspired by the East, a zen space is often clean and light with neutral colors and gentle textures. Perhaps you’ll include meaningful accessories with an Asian twist, subdued furnishings, and calming elements like candles and green plants. Comfort, serenity and tranquility are at the core of zen.

MID-CENTURY MODERN

The mid-century modern aesthetic has made quite the comeback in recent years, and with good reason! Inspired by the organic minimalism of the mid-twentieth century, this style pairs clean lines and accented woods with bold, solid prints and organic elements. A hint of sleek minimalism with a bold graphic edge. Accessories in the mid-century space are thoughtfully chosen—mix modern-day pieces with vintage finds!

Think artsy and hand-made, a bit eclectic but still refined. Consider furnishings that are organic with a touch of whimsy, using accessories that are hand-crafted, unique and tell a story.

Glorious green Spring is finally around the corner, which means warm weather, budding flowers, singing birds and—my favorite—spending time outdoors. It’s amazing how a little fresh air and sunshine can lift your spirits and heal your soul. With Spring comes hope and new beginnings, and right now I’m hopeful that friends and family can safely gather again soon. Fortunately, gathering outdoors has been a lifesaver for many of us this past year, and today I’m sharing some tips to create and enhance a gracious outdoor space, just in time for the launch of the Outdoor Collections on my site.

Extending Your Home to the Great Outdoors

I like to think of an outdoor area as an extension of your home. Whether you live in an apartment with a terrace or rooftop, or have a more spacious home with a backyard or garden, your outdoor space is a phenomenal spot to relax, connect with nature, and entertain guests. Instead of viewing an outdoor space as separate from the home, I consider it part of the whole, as if I’m moving from one atmosphere to another. Your outdoor space should have just as much love and attention as your living room or kitchen, so it’s important to be thoughtful and intentional about your open-air decor.

Live Your Best Life with the Perfect Pieces

The layout of your outdoor space often provides inspiration and a sense of direction and design—a townhouse patio will offer a different, more intimate experience from a large backyard. The consistent thread is to look at your home holistically, with the indoors and outdoors as a continuation of one to the other. Remember to also consider your lifestyle and how you’ll make the most of your time in your alfresco haven. Knowing how you will use the space helps you decide on your floorplan, your furniture selections, the decor and the overall feel you want to have. Will you frequently be enjoying cocktail hour on the patio with friends? Perhaps you love spending afternoons sunbathing with a good book. Are you looking to create a flexible space with easy-to-move furniture? Or are you looking for an area that’s perfect for the whole family to hang out in? Every space invites opportunities!

Of course, it’s important to consider your space as well as your lifestyle to find the perfect pieces. In areas that are intimate and cozy, perhaps a balcony or terrace off your high rise apartment, focus your attention on staying comfortable while enjoying the view. If you’re looking for more privacy from neighbors, incorporate pieces that help enclose a space and promote private luxury. A high-backed chair or settee adds a touch of elevation and allure. Including plants and greenery in taller pots and vases can also encourage a lush and unique sense of home that’s fully yours to enjoy!

Do you love eating dinner (or grilling!) on your patio? Focus on seating and a welcoming dining table. Pieces with a bit of mobility help keep the party going after the meal! I love having flow throughout a space, which keeps the energy fresh and vibrant. 

For a porch that features weather-friendly screens, you may be drawn to fabrics—poufs, sofas, even a rug—that will benefit from the luxury of coverage. Or if you fancy spending free time by the pool, gravitate towards pieces that allow you to go from water to land while being stylish and functional. Lounge the afternoon under the sun on a generous chaise, or feel fun by the cabana with some beachy furnishings.

An Outdoor Fete that Takes the Cake

Warm weather brings cheerful festivities, so have a Spring soiree in your graciously outfitted outdoor space! Our Resident Expert in Entertaining at Home, Debra Morris, is a seasoned (not to mention exceptional!) hostess and event planner. Her foolproof advice for a successful event: make it personal, and consider the soundtrack. “Nothing sets the mood like music,” Debra says. Think about whether you want to encourage conversation, or get a dance party started. Curating a soundtrack that suits the atmosphere is a tried-and-true way to ensure your guests have a memorable occasion.

A Stunning Ambiance for Every Mood

Lighting is a heavy hitter that adds to the magic of an event. Lighting is just as important outside as it is in your home—in fact, it has the potential to be even more impressive! When hosting an event outdoors we have the privilege of watching day turn to night right before our eyes, so it’s important to emphasize this transition with thoughtful lighting choices. The wow-factor can happen even after the sun sets! Table lamps, wall sconces, lanterns, and candles are all great options to set the mood to your liking. 

Keeping it Natural, Keeping it Fresh

Our outdoor spaces put us that much closer to nature, so one of my favorite ways to enhance an open-air setting is with natural materials. Including unique and intriguing plants in fabulous containers (I’m thinking vintage pots or hand-crafted vessels that offer a splash of color or artistry) is a great way to create a lush and eye-catching outdoor environment. Decadent geodes and gemstones also give a space a funky and organic splash. I especially adore incorporating an array of natural and textures into outdoor decor. Hand-woven pieces and fabrics, materials like jute and wicker, natural colors, stones and metals—objects that remind us of the earth we’re standing on. Consider pieces that speak to your design aesthetic and also remind you that you are one with nature.

If this past year has taught us anything, it’s the importance of connection and togetherness. And a wonderful event has the power to create joy and memories. I’m certainly ready for a great party with friends and loved-ones, and I bet most of you are, too! Luckily, events and gatherings are on the horizon once again, so it seems appropriate to introduce my friend and colleague Debra Morris, Resident Expert in Entertaining at Home.

Debra has seen (and planned!) it all—intimate weddings, graduation dinners, bar mitzvahs, you name it. She’s one of Manhattan’s premier event planners, the founder and creative director of the award-winning event company Eventsful Inc. where she creates bespoke events for clients in New York and around the world. She has a particular flair for fabulous events, and her touch of drama and attention to detail make her an exceptional Resident Expert in Entertaining at Home. Join in our exciting conversation below! We discuss Debra's fascinating career and her love of events, and she even shares some useful tips and tricks to make every event an experience. 

JOURNEY OF A LIFETIME

Robin: Hi Debra! So nice of you to join me.

Debra: My pleasure, Robin!

Robin: So what sparked your interest in event planning?

Debra: I was a theater major at New York University, so I started out as an actress. I had assumed that it was what my life was going to be. Naturally I worked as a waitress to earn money when I was in school. I loved the food and beverage industry, and I was always a foodie....it was just a passion, and never imagined that it would become a lifelong career. But believe it or not, my waitressing job led me into event planning.

Robin: I love that! Can you tell us more about that?

Debra: Definitely! I am a people person, and I actually loved waitressing and bartending, which isn’t always the case. I remember one night while I was waiting tables, two men came into the restaurant and left me $200 for a $35 check. I approached them, and discovered it was not a mistake. They were opening a restaurant on top of the World Trade Center, and felt that I had what they were looking for in a team member. They hadn’t figured out where exactly I would fit, but they were sure they wanted to work with me. I wasn’t entirely certain what I wanted for a career at that point, but something told me this was worth considering. 

It turned out that the restaurant was Windows on the World. They offered me a 6-month paid internship and the opportunity to travel around the world to receive restaurant training. In terms of what my eventual job would be, dealing with clients and customers was a given, they said, because that’s what my personality was suited for. 

THE VENTURE

Robin: You know, I love how sometimes the right opportunities just find us! How did this one turn into the career of a lifetime?

Debra: Over the course of the internship, I trained at the Hilton in Toronto, where I worked in every single department and learned everything there is to know about restaurant operations. I spent time in the kitchen, stewarding, the wine cellar...you name it! Back in New York, I worked in Human Resources for a bit to understand how to manage employees internally. Gradually I worked my way up the ladder and became the Assistant Director of Catering — and that’s where I found my true fit. I took my theatre background and applied it into a multi-million dollar operation. This creative approach doubled the turnout for the restaurant. I remember the first time I did a themed party, it was called “The Streets of New York.” It was wildly successful so I just kept going from there. I experimented with bringing a movie set to an event, and became known for doing over-the-top things to make events extra special. After leaving Windows on the World, I worked at a hotel for a few years and discovered the differences between restaurant and hotel operations. 

Robin: What inspired you to start your company, Eventsful? 

Debra: After working for several years in hospitality I felt compelled to do something on my own—my mother also really encouraged me, which meant a lot. I wound up in Holland studying floral arrangements, partially because I never had direct experience with that back home. And because I was in Europe I took the opportunity to learn about wine and food pairings in Burgundy. When I returned, my previous clients started to contact me about their own events. They wouldn’t take no for an answer! So of course I said “yes”...and guess what—28 years later, I’m still doing it! So that’s how Eventsful was born. We were one of the first companies to take full control of our clients’ events and eliminate third-party vendors. We plan entire events from start to finish, and make sure people have a phenomenal time. 

WHAT IT TAKES

Robin: I’d love to know what it took for you to become an expert.

Debra: Practice, practice and more practice! Troubleshooting is a big part of it. Being ahead of the game is critical. To my team and clients I’m known as “The Fixer.” I’ll give you an example: one cold winter a client was hosting an event and the heating in the venue went out. As terrible as it seemed, I stepped in to concoct the best solution while keeping my client stress-free. We secured a place to hold a cocktail reception nearby—and brought in red carpets, golf carts, heaters, and a full team!

Best of all, the clients had no idea! The issue was completely resolved in a few hours, and after the event was over my clients were amazed by how I was able to manage it all. Troubleshooting, I think, is what taught me that when something unexpected occurs, my creative energy starts to flow. I just naturally step in to somehow rebuild—fix—the situation. I also think it’s important to learn something new every day, and that is what makes me good at my job. I pay attention, I listen...and most importantly, I try to have fun.

Robin: Who are some of your clients? How do they find you?

Debra: I have been very lucky over the years in terms of clients. I have never had to go out and shop for business — my clients usually come to me. It has always been from word of mouth, and many of our clients have been guests at one of my other events. Most of them approach me because they were extremely happy with the event they were attending. 

My business has also become generational… this is going to make me feel old, but I am now throwing bar and bat mitzvahs for children whose parents’ wedding I planned years ago. Fifteen-twenty years later, they come back to me. It is the most special feeling. It’s almost as if I have become a part of their family. 

Robin: That’s all so inspiring. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience, Debra!

I am back with Toma Clark Haines, our Resident Expert in Vintage and Antiques. The Antiques Experience…

Robin: Toma, you are so well versed in taking antiquing tours, and you have done it for years. What is the Antiques Diva tour experience like?

Toma: Taking an Antiques Tour with us will open a window into the soul of another country. When you look outside of yourself and travel, you get to know yourself better...During my tours, each person gets a glimpse of the country and its history. Exploring antiques from different time periods provides insights into other cultures, ideas, and ways of living... It is also quite simply about looking at fascinating objects. Even more than that, it is really about the experience of traveling a distance for that special piece, buying it, and having it become a conversation you have with your guests. 

Robin: You have travelled all around the world and explored vintage and antiques from so many places and periods. Could you tell us about the different types of antiques that you usually work with on your tours with your clients?   

Toma: We look for what our clients want. Whether we are working with an interior designer, or even the public, our focus is on the client. They are the ones making the music, our job is to simply make it all function smoothly.

Our Antique Tours always start with asking what the client wants. If you are just starting to collect, and are unsure about where to look, we know exactly the right places to take you. We custom choreograph the tour for the clients to be able to go and explore and find what they are looking for quickly, and within their budget. 

These days with the virtual world being so popular, we are connecting with our clients online via Instagram Live. Our tour guides showcase the process of purchasing vintage and antiques, and their travels. We’ve been hosting virtual tours for those who cannot travel or do not have time to travel. 

Robin: Who are some of your clients? 

Toma: I work with interior designers, antique dealers, hoteliers, and also furniture manufacturers. We often accompany them to flea markets to help them get ideas through things that intrigue them. We also work directly with the public in addition to professionals of trade.

More Endeavors...

Robin: I know you designed a collection of furniture. How did that come about? What inspired you and how do you feel about the collection?

Toma: Yes, I have a couple of different collections. One of them is the Antiques Diva collection by Aidan Gray... and it all started with a conversation with Randall Weeks, who was a client of mine. He had come to France to source ideas for his furniture collection, and we worked together with him to take tours for sourcing objects. He told me about how his company was always known for more traditional interior design...and he was looking to incorporate more modern elements into his work. The idea stuck with me. 

One day, when I was in a flea market, I noticed a beautiful frame of a chair without a seat. It spoke to me like a work of art...a sculpture. Randall’s idea of mixing modern and antique came to me as an inspiration that turned into a wonderful venture.

Robin: What else are you doing? You have an incredible jewelry collection under your label “The Republic of Toma.” That is so different from antiques. What inspired you to design jewelry? 

Toma: In addition to furniture and jewelry, I am also designing a fabric collection… I recently met a friend who said to me that everything I was doing was so different from each other. If you really think about it, it is not at all different. It is all connected. My original background, English Literature, was all about reading, and translating the learning into recognizing signs and symbols. Whether it is reading a book or reading an object, my thing is all about deciphering the true meaning of things. 

Various designs and works of art spoke to me during my travels...and often I was able to translate those designs into jewelry. Think about a chandelier that hangs in the living room. How different is it from the chandelier that hangs from your ear? If you start thinking in terms of shape, you can think about the things that beautify a space, and also beautify you. 

Many of my designs draw inspiration from the Neoclassical period, and original carvings found on these historical pieces. My first jewelry collection displayed various forms of snakes inspired from Art Deco, the second one had a lot of frogs and monkeys. They were symbols of transformation that reflected the changes I was going through in my personal life. I saw the challenging time as an opportunity to be transformed.

How it Started...

Robin: Toma, can you tell us a little bit about what influenced your interest in vintage and antiques? 

Toma: From childhood, my mother did not have much money, but what she lacked in dollars, she made up for with incredible taste. We would often go to a garage sale, or a flea market where she would pluck out a magnificent, hidden thing that nobody else had noticed. At home, she would find the perfect place to put it...this is what really started to transform our living space and the way I looked at furniture. Back then, most people didn’t pay attention to her choices in furniture, but now, having an eye for vintage is immensely popular. My mom was ahead of her time. Her knack for adapting eclectic decor has definitely influenced my love for antiques. 

From a young age, I also learned to appreciate the unique and one-of-a-kind stories these treasured antiques carried— as well as discovering the value of second hand and repurposed pieces. As an adult, this translated into learning that antiques were often of better value than similar new items, because they tend to retain their value longer.

Robin: I know everyone would like to know a little more about your background. Would you please share that with us?

Toma: Believe it or not, my background is in English literature. You would think that it is a different world from vintage or antiques... that the two of them are disconnected...but actually, when you study literature, you study symbols and the meanings of things. You are simultaneously learning about history, as well as learning how to understand a painting or an object.

After college, when I was 25, I moved overseas to Paris... and on the very first weekend, I found myself shopping at the Paris Flea Market... the rest is history! I had always heard about how special the Paris Flea Market was, and going there myself...it changed my life. I eventually became obsessed and shopped every flea market in France, and then all around Europe! That is how I started my company thirteen years ago. I was collecting vintage and antiques everywhere I went...and before I knew it, I started blogging about buying antiques, and my readers eventually pushed me to take them on buying tours. My company is now the only approved official guide of the Paris Flea Market. It’s funny how things come full circle. I often think to myself...what a wonderful journey it has been. My marriage brought me to Paris from Oklahoma, where I am originally from, and after living in Paris for five years, I have since lived in Amsterdam, Berlin, and now the beautiful city of Venice.

Robin: How did you learn about antiques and how did you become an expert in your field?

Toma:  I gained expertise through a very hands-on experience; by going to the markets, exploring, speaking to dealers, and working to understand the meaning of these objects. As a literature student, I translated my knowledge of symbols, and identifying meanings into objects. For instance, if you look at a painting with an apple on it, one of the ways to decipher it might be that the apple is a symbol of fertility. The same holds true for furniture.

I would see a wonderful fluted column on a chair, and would discover that it is from Louis XVI’s period. This would tell me that he was historically inspired by Pompei, because the ruins were found at his time. I was able to string together these threads of history because I am first and foremost, a reader... a reader of books, of objects, and of people. I am always looking for signs and symbols and how to interpret them. Of course, my love of travel, and the studying of antiques from different periods around the world helped me gain a better understanding of them. 

Toma's Product Recommendations

Robin: People often confuse the terms "vintage" and "antique". What defines them and how do you differentiate between them?

Toma:  “Antiques” need to be at least one hundred years old. The term “vintage”, on the other hand, has had varied definitions over time and is subject to debate. For it to be called vintage, some say that an object needs to be fifty years old while others say twenty years is enough for it to be called vintage. Personally, I like to go with twenty years. Some may consider something twenty years old “second-hand” instead of “vintage”, but second-hand still has a very valuable place in the industry. There are often designer pieces that have a great look and still hold tremendous value. These items can add distinctive looks and create the perfect balance in your room. Whether the pieces are vintage, antiques or second-hand, each can add wonderful elements into your home while giving it a unique look that is all your own. 

Personal style and taste.

Robin: Toma, you travel so much, and are exposed to everything. Do you have a personal favorite period or style of antiques? 

Toma: My personal style is all about the mix, and my house reflects it. People often comment that my interiors speak a contemporary language even though I have a lot of antiques mixed in.

I love the 18th Century. I like the Rococo phase of Louis XV and Louis XVI , and slightly thereafter, there are objects from King Gustav’s reign in Sweden from the Gustavian period. If I had to choose, I tend to lean towards Gustavian. I personally collect mostly Swedish and French antiques, with some Spanish antiques thrown in for good measure. Almost every item in my home is antique with the exception of some well chosen contemporary furniture, like my white leather couch, my black leather bed, and my Ikea cabinets that are behind my 18th century desk. Yes, I did say Ikea!

Robin: You seem to have embarked on a long, and beautiful journey from the time you started. How has your love for antiques evolved over time? 

Toma: I am currently in a smaller home in Venice, as compared to my home in Berlin where I had three kinds of spaces filled with objects. I have gone more minimal over time and my current home is nothing but traditional.

Over time, I have recognized that LESS is more...I want to see antiques with more air around them, I want them to have space to breathe, and for people to be able to see and appreciate the object in all its beauty. So, I am careful when I decorate. I do have a few clusters of collections, while mostly trying to space out my collection. That’s how my personal aesthetic has evolved and that’s also how antiques become modern...when you give them space.

As we approach Valentine’s Day, aka the holiday of love, I am so excited to talk about one of the things I love most as a designer, and the newest category to launch on my site: hardware! 

Like jewelry for the home, finding the perfect hardware can really add that extra “oomph” to a room that makes all the difference. Just like how a necklace or pair of earrings can make or break an outfit, the right piece of hardware can make a statement, which is why it deserves to be selected carefully. 

Today, I’m sharing some insider tips and tricks that may help you when deciding on hardware for your space. Whether you are doing a small home improvement project, or pulling out all the stops for a total makeover, these tips will guide you through the process.

1. Scan your room for existing pieces to spruce up

Changing up the hardware on certain furniture can make a dramatic difference. If you are looking for an easy way to dress up your room without replacing anything, take a closer look at the existing furniture. Is there a nightstand, dresser, cabinet or console that you don’t love? Just changing out the hardware can transform the entire look of the piece, turning it into a fashion statement. Take a look at this dresser below that has been completely elevated by replacing the existing handles with Robin Baron Signature Collection hardware.

2. Take measurements

If you are replacing old hardware, be sure to measure the spread of the screws in the back of the cabinet drawer or door so you have the right dimensions and cover the old screw holes. The exception to this is if there is a backplate on the new hardware. You can often add a backplate to new pulls, which would cover the original holes on your furniture and add another aspect to your fresh, new look.

3. Size and functionality matter

Where is the hardware being installed? Is it going on a drawer or a door, kitchen cabinet, or dresser? Wherever it is, make sure to measure the height and width of the surface, as well as consider how the hardware is meant to function. Bold hardware makes a statement, but it’s important that it fits the height of where it is going. I love to use larger-sized pulls that fill the space— you just have to make sure it fits. From a functionality standpoint, if your hardware is going on a wide or deep drawer (like a pot drawer or a lateral file), make sure the weight is balanced when you open it by using a longer than average pull. 

Play around with mixing metals.

There’s no need to shy away from mixing metal finishes like gold, silver, and copper tones. It often allows you to create a more interesting look in a room— especially in kitchens where you probably already have some stainless steel in your hood, range or appliances. There are many opportunities for hardware to shine in the kitchen:  from cabinets to pantries— find the right hardware to add some flavor and flair to your kitchen. That said, mixing metal finishes is not only for your kitchen, it works in any room. Think of your hardware as adorning and complementing the furniture or cabinets you are installing them on and the rest will fall in place.

Be Bold.

Take a chance with big and bold hardware — I find that it’s these standout pieces that take a look from drab to fab! Think of it as jewelry, and put as much thought into your hardware selection as you do in getting dressed. There’s no reason for your space to ever be boring. Seize the opportunity to express yourself with your hardware... you’ll be surprised at what a difference it makes!

Welcome back, Fabulistas!

By now, we’ve all gotten comfortable with spending copious amounts of time cooped up inside… and we probably will be for a good bit longer! With work-from-home hours and virtual everything, it’s hard to find the time to sneak in a walk each day or even step outside for a breath of fresh air. Getting outdoors has been one of my saving graces over the last year. 

Another key to staying sane? Biophilia. This design style is so much more than a trend… it’s a gateway to the outdoors. As you rethink your home improvements and touch-ups for the year ahead, consider incorporating this element into your home for a more peaceful space where you feel more connected to the natural world (and less connected to your Zoom account!).

Biophilia: The Basics + The Benefits

Biophilia is based on the notion that humans have an inherent need to connect with nature, drawing more pleasure from it than from other stimuli. We’re hard-wired to crave natural and organic experiences based on evolutionary dependence on nature for both fulfillment and survival. For me, this is true in design and in life! Fresh flowers or greenery instantly improve my mood and brighten up a space. Even the smallest plant-related details or nature-inspired on a piece can bring a level of zen to a room.

As we continue to approach our lives with mindfulness, it’s important to remember how different aspects of our life affect our mood and mindset. Studies have shown that the ability to view nature, even from the indoors, lowers blood pressure and increases productivity. It’s also proved to advance our psychological and physiological wellness, from mood elevation and serotonin production to a better sense of alertness. This trend is so closely tied to our health and well-being that it’s important to make an active effort to make it part of our everyday lives. Small changes can make all the difference!

Think Like A Plant Parent, Act Like A Designer

In the design world, biophilia is all about fusing a love for nature and the outdoors with the best, most meaningful natural materials and items you can find. We can incorporate biophilia into almost any aspect of interior design... materials, finishes, furniture, lighting… you name it! Focus on using elements from the natural world in your home, such as greenery and vegetation, water, natural light, and organic materials like wood, stone, and bamboo. Think big… you can even add a living wall or indoor garden! 

Not everything has to be living to give a biophilic effect. A piece can be in the shape of something from nature, or it can be as easy as layering in natural, simple aesthetics when you choose how to place the different elements and pieces of furniture in a room! Our brains respond differently and more positively when they are exposed to elements from the natural world. If you want quick, easy biophilic additions, opt for leaf-shaped dishes or floral sculptures. They’re a great starting point! This process is all about blurring the boundaries between the indoors and the outdoors. The result is an internal environment that reduces stress, fosters creativity and cognitive function, and most importantly, makes you feel good and relaxed every time you walk through the door.

Play with Patterns

Patterns play an enormous role in biophilic design. When we have limited access to nature, which is true for many of us these days, we rely on biomorphic forms, patterns, and materials to provide a natural order. They often appear as “fractals,” which are continuous patterns that are often complex and self-similar. Studies have shown that fractals are linked to a number of potential health benefits, from stress reduction to combating mental fatigue. There are endless opportunities to improve your home design and outlook on life by selecting colors, fabric, tiles, wallpaper, carpeting, and other floor covering that showcase natural patterns of images of nature. This can start with something as simple as your walls and carry over into more intimate details like your table lamps or bedspread. Each element builds off of the other to create a space of tranquility.

As the first month of a fresh year inches toward its final week, I’ve been reflecting on how best to move forward through a year full of possibility. I always start with my mantra: Confidence begins at home. While we strive to be our best and most confident selves every day, sometimes we wake up needing a boost. Happiness is a choice, and choosing to have a positive attitude is something we have to work towards every day! Having a home that brings you confidence will help you choose a positive attitude and help you stay happy.

My mantra encompasses the big and little things throughout your home that make it special, unique, and uplifting for you. Maybe it’s the meaningful decor on your nightstand, or the beautiful, bright color you selected for your kitchen. Each one of your small details paints a bigger picture… the picture of how you walk into the world every day. Like I always say, Feel good about your home and you’ll feel good about your life!

The First Thing You See in the Morning

Having a space you love is one of the best things you can do for yourself. It’s where we begin every day. Our environment affects us in a myriad of ways -  from our mood, to being able to find our keys in the morning. We gain inspiration from any room in our home … from the bedroom or living room, to the kitchen or office!

We all have the power to create our happiness with everything we do - that starts with our home. My primary goal is to help people create a space where their confidence is nourished and sustained; through thoughtful design. By surrounding yourself with pieces that empower you, inspire you, and make you feel good, you will be ready to tackle anything.

There are many ways to create a home that jumpstarts your day and also becomes a safe haven at night. Colors, textures, furniture, and decor are all aspects to be considered. If you’re starting from scratch, the world is your oyster. If you’re working with what you have, a few well-chosen accessories can make all the difference.

Design with Confidence

Anything and everything in your home can inspire confidence. It’s all about finding what speaks to you on a personal level. Color can be a powerful tool and have a profound impact on your mood and outlook. It can lift your spirit, soothe your soul, or energize your day.

When choosing colors, think about what resonates for you, and also think about what you’re trying to achieve in that space. Blues are calming, greens are healing, browns are grounding, and yellows spur creativity. These are just a few examples... every color has a different psychological and physiological impact on us, so bear their properties in mind when choosing your colors, and remain connected to how they make you feel.

Curate Your Own Collection

Artwork in itself can have a significant impact on you each day. We always say that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and it’s never as true as it is with art. Art is one of the most personal things you can have in your home, and I can help you understand its importance in your room. Whether you’re doing inexpensive wall art or investing in fine art, take your time finding the pieces that speak to you, that move you, and even touch you. Of course, they should work with your decor and the design of your home, but they don’t have to be coordinated. Sometimes an unexpected mix can be just the right thing. Adding color through your art in an otherwise neutral room can be exciting and energize your space. Adding modern art to a more transitional, or even traditional, decor can supply the perfect juxtaposition to make your home uniquely yours. Each piece should stand on its own, but it’s when you combine the different elements together that you make it your own. Art is meant to strike a chord within you, so when it’s for your home, make it one that inspires you and brings you joy!

Be One with Nature

The last few years have seen a rise in a trend that incorporates elements of nature into our lives. We as humans have a tendency to interact or be closely associated with other forms of life in nature. This phenomenon, coined by Harvard naturalist, Dr. Edward O. Wilson, is called biophilia (bio- meaning “life”, and -philia meaning “lover of” or “friendly feeling toward”). With so many of us cooped up in our homes these last few months, it is no surprise that the biophilia trend is acutely on the rise. We feel drawn towards nature and crave more of it in our lives. This can easily be accomplished by bringing plants and plant-related items into a room, or having furnishings that are nature-inspired. 

Living walls have become very popular; while they take a bit of care, or a simple irrigation system, they add a lot to a home. You also have the option to have plants, of all sizes, in key locations. There are fabulous and interesting pots and planters to transfer them into, giving you many options to create the dramatic effect you want for your space - all while coordinating them with the rest of your decor.

Surrounding ourselves with elements that express our affinities for nature can help similarly ground us in our daily lives. Some people have a “green thumb” and love taking care of living plants and gardens. For me, that’s not my strong suit, so I’m very drawn to having some home decor with a biophilic look: pieces that have organic shapes or elements to it, or incorporating patterns that imitate forestry (like a wallpapered accent wall, or patterned pillows). These elements help to soothe us, and help us feel calm and provide a general sense of well being. It’s what biophilia is all about! And before you ask... yes...here are a few examples of home furnishings that exemplify these qualities:

This year, it’s essential that we all move self-care to the top of our New Year’s resolutions. It is not always easy to do… I have to remind myself every day! Carving out time to nourish and rejuvenate ourselves is one of the best things we can do… and something that we can actively control. Whether you live in a country cottage, a suburban home, or a cozy apartment in a big city, finding your happy place is key. That’s why I’ve put together a guide to convert your mind and your space into a temple of self-care, even if you experience it just a few minutes each day.

Self-Care is not Selfish

We all need to remind ourselves that it’s crucial to nourish our body and soul. As Buddha said, “You yourself, as much as anybody in the entire universe, deserve your love and affection.” We must never feel guilty for taking a staycation. Self-care is more than taking care of our bodies… it’s about nurturing our minds and emotions as well. It’s about protecting our mental health and fostering wellness. It helps us have the inner strength to give ourselves what we truly need.

The first step in taking care of ourselves is to identify and address our needs. This is especially true for parents, who tend to put others… kids, spouses, parents, friends... first because we feel committed to being the best caretakers we can be. I know from experience that it can be difficult to shift the focus to our own self-care.

Your Bedroom as Sanctuary

Now more than ever, we want our home to be a place where we feel safe and inspired, making our sanctuary personal. We all crave a space where we can shut out the rest of the world, even for a short while, and enter a realm of peace, calm, and tranquility. Choose a room… it can be any room, even the kitchen… and add a few simple items to claim the space and set your intentions.

If you’re like me and begin your day with meditation, your bedroom is a natural place to start. Turn off your cell phone, forget the TV, and dim the lights. I always find that surrounding myself with a few special things helps me set the tone. A beautiful throw pillow for support or a soft blanket can help you get into a good headspace. I find bringing nature into my routine provides a breath of fresh air, whether it’s a plant, bright flowers, or dried lavender. My favorite combination is lighting a candle and using an aromatherapy diffuser with essential oils such as lavender, lemon, or rose.

A Common Space Just For You

Whether it’s your living room or family room, you can take a well-used communal space and still claim it temporarily to nourish yourself. Cozy up in your favorite chair or spot on the sofa and relax with music, candles, soft lighting, and your favorite throw. Treat yourself to a pretty tray of goodies, such as mints, chocolates, or little nibbles. Top off your self-care setup with a glass of wine and your favorite guilty-pleasure TV show! It’s not always about being meditative, it’s about doing things that make you feel good and feel taken care of.

The Bathroom: Beyond Basics

The bathroom can be your private retreat. We spend a lot of time here, so it’s important to surround yourself with things that make you feel good and beautiful. Even the container you use for your Q-tips and cotton balls can change the way you approach your day. Think outside of the box (no pun intended) and use a container that wasn’t originally meant for them, like a decorative box! Similarly, your soap dish doesn’t have to be an actual soap dish… use a small plate that you adore! Think about your towels. Buy some with either bright colors, a pattern, or a texture… something that brings you joy or happiness. If you incorporate things that are beautiful and that you love, you’ll feel special every time you look at or use them… and that is part of self-care!

One thing that people often don’t think enough about in the bathroom is decorative lighting. Opt for an interesting chandelier or a pair of wonderful sconces instead of your basic bathroom ceiling or vanity light. This alone can transform your entire bathroom experience. We always want to feel cared for and inspired, especially in the space we start or end each day. Whether they’re subtle changes or big changes, these are ways to tell ourselves that we are worth it and we matter… and that all starts from within.

Yes, the Kitchen CAN Be All About You!

The kitchen can be a happy place to spend some alone time. Even small things, like having your tools and ingredients in an easy-to-reach place or getting rid of clutter, can contribute to a pleasurable experience. It’s important to actively make your kitchen a space you want to be in. Select colors that lift you up. There are so many appliances that come in various colors now… mixing bowls, blenders, coffee makers… the possibilities are endless! The way you accessorize your kitchen truly influences how you perceive your kitchen. Think of it as another room, not as just the kitchen.

By adding a few beautiful accessories and colors that you love, the space will feel refreshed, and so will you! Surround yourself with bowls of fresh fruit, vases filled with your favorite flowers, or special containers with herbs from your garden. Even your most utilitarian cooking utensils like your pots and pans should have an interesting color or design to ensure you enjoy using it. You can also splurge on a really great set of knives or a state-of-the art food processor! It’s essential that you have all the right utensils to make your preparation easier and more enjoyable. Some of your kitchen is about decoration and some is about function! Personally, I like to cook with the lights dimmed, a candle lit, and music in the background.

Giving ourselves the self-care we need allows us to be better, to feel better, and to fully be present. Repeat after me: Self-care is not selfish! It’s healing and feeding yourself positively, so you can be there for everyone else in your life. I am always inspired by new trends. This year, I’m particularly excited about the visual energy sprouting up across the design landscape, from gourmet plating in the kitchen to curated home office spaces.

As we spend all our time at home these days, I’ve put together ideas to touch up our spaces with 2021’s most in-demand trends. You’ll see these trends all over the internet, and I want to give you an in-depth look and guide you in how to make them yours.

Neutral color palettes are always important, and they’re something I’ve been fusing into my designs for years. Simple shades and shapes can often pack the biggest punch.

Japandi is a fusion of Japanese and Scandinavian design approaches that focuses on sleek lines and soothing interiors. Japandi utilizes natural woods and earthy tones to bring a lightness to any space. Even if you’re not ready for a full Japandi-style room, a few accents here and there can bring a renewed sense of calm to your home. A haven for modern minimalists, this style is the perfect respite for the overwhelming world. It’s sure to bring more zen into your 2021… something we could all use more of.

STACK ATTACK 

Make your own gallery at home! If you take your video calls in the kitchen, stacking your shelves with bright and beautiful decor and accessories is a must for the hundreds of Zoom calls destined for the new year. Let your imagination run wild with your favorite colors and textures and make your shelving into its own masterpiece.

BE YOUR OWN BOSS

Working from home has inspired many people to branch off and start their own business, brand, or side hustle. Over the last year, at-home office spaces have changed, from offering fully stocked mini kitchens to transforming the spaces into Zoom Rooms, like the one I recently designed for the Seasonal Living Magazine Virtual Designer Showhouse. Working from home not only saves time, it can offer a quiet space for brainstorming and reflection—a far cry from the 9-5 workplace.

Like I always say, “If you don’t take a chance, you don’t get one.” I am proud to call myself my own boss and live by my words. Virtual Showhouse… A Look Into the 21st Century

Hello, Fabulistas!

When I was asked by Seasonal Living to participate as one of their select designers for their first-ever virtual designer showhouse, the answer was immediately yes! In the pandemic era, this was one of the most visionary and forward-thinking ideas I had ever heard, and much like my philosophy, they set out to find new ways to execute business, events, and promotions that inspire the design world virtually.

I love doing showhouses, which was nearly impossible this year. So I took this creative outlet that Seasonal Living gave me and ran with it. Once I heard about the Zoom Room (will insert blog post), I was in. The concept is brand new… we’ve never needed them before. And there’s nothing I love more than tackling something that’s never been done! I saw this as the perfect chance to help create a better life for people who are spending time in the same space all year. In fact, I loved working on it so much that I joined and became a sponsor, which was a logical next step with the launch of Robin Baron Design’s new digital home. What a great opportunity to inspire design lovers in the comfort of their own homes!

I always want your home to be fabulous… and this year, it’s especially important that you feel confident about your living space. Now that we’re spending the majority of time inside, investing in a comfortable, polished place for all of your digital communication, personal and professional, is essential.

So, What Exactly IS A Zoom Room?

I was lucky this year. I was asked to be a designer in the very first entirely virtual luxury designer showhouse. I immediately chose to do the Zoom Room because it was, quite literally, never done before. It made me think about what a room like this could be, all the different ways we would use it and what we would need to make it the most functional for our new lives. It all started with mood boards…I let my imagination run wild. With this “new normal” in mind, you don’t want to be stuck taking video calls in a cluttered kitchen or cramped office, and you definitely don’t want to have to do so while holding up your phone or iPad. Trust me, I’ve been there! Video calls are the way we connect with EVERYONE now, from business to personal to family matters.

Every call we make requires a slightly different protocol and environment, and our surrounding space needs to embrace that. In the Zoom Room I designed for the Seasonal Living Showhouse, I created separate areas within this meticulously designed room for that exact reason. The space where I have an after-work cocktail with a girlfriend is going to look and function differently than the area where I take my client meetings.

It’s All About Flexibility

I focused on one key element… flexibility! Flexibility is the most important aspect to keep in mind when designing a room like this. It’s probably the most important thing to consider in designing almost any room today. When I aimed for flexibility in this Zoom Room, I asked four basic questions: What are you going to use the room for? What do you want to reveal? How do you want to feel? How will the lighting help accomplish those things?

When you think about your own home, think about those four questions. You might share a workspace with kids learning at home, or with a partner who prefers to work in the same room. Maybe a family member is temporarily living with you who wasn’t before. Whatever the case, odds are you probably have a handful of different schedules working in tandem within your home. So, you need to understand how those work together in terms of a room that you can all use for video calls. Establish who needs the room for what and when, and then you can go from there.

A Space That Inspires Wellness & Mindfulness

I also incorporated elements from nature to provide a sense of wellness. The amorphous-shaped dropped ceiling was specifically designed to be covered in living moss to add a sense of calmness by bringing a bit of the natural environment inside. Biophilia, which is all about our desire to commune with nature, is a huge trend right now. It promotes mindfulness in any space. To add to this feeling, I added live plants which also helps us all feel more connected to nature.

The Making of a Zoom-Worthy Room

Rich, warm, and inviting… that’s the kind of space I set out to create. I wanted the colors to represent all three of these things, and while I love bright colors, I really wanted the people on the calls to shine more than the surrounding area. Golds and bronzes are beautiful neutral tones that inspire warmth and positivity, but don’t overtake the screen. This combined with the room’s soft textures allow the Zoomer to glow.

Unique Environments for Each “Type” of Zoom Call

To get started, I first thought about the type of video calls I make on a regular basis. Business calls are definitely a priority, but I also needed zoom calls to connect with my friends…or I would have gone crazy during the challenging year we’ve all had…and these calls were also the lifeline for my family to stay connected. The Zoom Room I designed is filled with earthy yet luxe materials, and I created three distinct spaces to enhance the three distinct ways many of us need to use the room. Every area has a unique backdrop, yet they’re all cohesive and are united in the room as a whole. It has tribal elements as well—I love a twist! However, functionality always comes first. With beauty being a close second, the two should go hand in hand. The trick is to surround yourself with lighting, color, and furniture that is interesting to you and inspires you. Make a conscious decision about each and every piece, and you’re guaranteed to feel good. Confidence begins at home and reflects how you feel. And when you feel good in your home, you can truly be your best self.

On Zoom, Lighting Is Everything!

Perhaps the most critical design element for a successful video call is the lighting. In order to be camera-ready, it all comes down to this: If you want to look and feel your best, you’ve got to nix the shadows. This means always incorporating multi-directional light. Catering to each area with specific sources of light will help to illuminate you and the space around you.

You need multi-directional lighting to avoid shadows, so try mixing some overhead lighting like one of these to each sitting area: our Carolina Multi-Pendant, St. Albans Pendant, or Vibe Pendant. To add some variation with light sources, utilize your tabletops. Opt for lamps like our Winvian Table Lamp, Dianthus Table Lamp, and Baroque Floral Gold Foil Table Lamp.

I was asked by MYDOMAINE to share my take on lighting design trends for 2021. Check it out to read what I had to say about this trend, and enjoy the insights from other designers as well. I am seeing the 2021 lighting trend embracing mixing metals and finishes, I love that it gives everyone the opportunity to express their creativity and reflect their own personality. The design options are endless and it is good to know what is out there to find as you shop. It's a win-win!

2021 Home Office Trends

The virtual office of today does triple duty with work-study-play, and great lighting is more important than ever... it ensures you are camera ready at all times. There are many beautiful table lamps with sculptural vibes making them truly functional art to help brighten your desk. Whether it is a relaxing space or a lively environment, making it your own is more important than ever since we are all spending so much time at home. Zoom Room Design

Who in a million years would think that our homes would include a room exclusively for video calls?! A space where people connect with business associates, friends, and family virtually? Before this year, not me! As you know I am designing a Zoom Room design for Seasonal Living Magazine's Virtual Designer Showhouse. Zoom Rooms present a unique challenge as there are so many aspects to consider when creating a room JUST for video calling. This virtual showhouse is going to be innovative and exciting so I hope you will join me and see the entire house. The big reveal is on Thursday, December 3^rd 2020. I am so energized by designing this Zoom Room that I put together this quick video of what you should consider when creating your own Zoom Room. You may have to think a little differently to do it, but it will give you more joy on calls and in the space itself. The more thought you put into it, the more enjoyable your space will be.

Pro Tip: Give yourself options in your room, different places for different types of calls. Try creating more than one location in your office for your video calls. Maybe a corner chair as a place for a more casual call. Think about creating a space that enhances your moment and makes for the most enjoyable experience. Having options will show your creative side—and its a great way to put your best foot forward.

Many families will be celebrating in a more intimate setting this year, and with that in mind it is the time to be thoughtful with your Thanksgiving Table Setting. Embrace the intimacy of smaller gatherings… more warmth in conversations and making deeper connections with those we love. We all deserve this feeling of the season to uplift our spirits! A thoughtful Thanksgiving table setting is a wonderful backdrop to create a spiritual and meaningful space. Here are some inspirational settings for whatever style you are. Use this as a guide, sprinkle it with your personality, feel the season and make it fabulous!

Modern Table Setting

This tablescape was designed with glamourous tranquility in mind. Each setting has a lovely Orchid, a flower with a long-lasting bloom like the love I have for my guests. The centerpiece of Amethysts adds positive and healing spirituality to the setting and the wood accents remind us to remain grounded in the earth. The table setting is featured in the #ShowMeYourTable charity event currently on social media. Grey Hunt Interiors and Kendall Wilkinson Design teamed up this year to support Feeding America.
