Top 10 YouTube Channels for Science!

These are the top 10 Science YouTube channels in Rusty Science perspective. This is not of a count down type video. It is just a personal view from the makers of this post.

Currently there are 26 million YouTube channels are exist. Many gained more popularity and subscribers. But we have narrowed it down to the categories, in which channel should produce only science related content, not limited only to physics. Channels listed below talks about physics, chemistry, biology, philosophy and math. Definitely there will be some exceptions. Please bare with us.

Let’s Jump into the topic: Number 1

It is OK to be smart:
This channel currently hold approximately 3.1M subscribers, many consider that the host "Joe", is not expressive enough to make the show interesting, but the topics he deal with are intense. The most obvious questions in science are answered with very easy and simple animated examples. They not only cover physics, but biology, math and social science. This is not a tutorial channel. But it can teach you enough theory, facts and history in science in a simple manner.

AsapScience:
First time when I saw this video, I was not impressed, because they were explaining problems and solutions with some silly white board sketches. But when I started following it more and deeper, it gave me goose bumps, that the data points, statistics and the amount of information they carry are amazing, It makes me wonder how they can comprise that much information through cartoons. Both the hosts are knowledgeable, expressive and open-minded.

Minute Physics:
I'm one of the long standing subscribers for this channel. Don’t confuse with the name, that their channel contents are only a minute long, it is not. They tried to explain complicated physics problems with simple stick man examples. Their explanations blew my mind many times. Especially in an episode where they explained about Schrodinger's cat experiment, that explanation was very nice and easy to understand. Their topics are thought provoking, if you know some basic understanding about physics, but need some clarity on fundamentals, then, this is the go-to-place for you.

PBS Space Time:
Man, this is an expert’s forum, I suggest not to step into it if you don't have interest in astrophysics, as these guys will eat your mind. This is one of the best creations of PBS Studio I would say. Their host (Matt) explains the advanced concepts of cosmology in his videos. I have never seen any youTube videos where the comment section is completely filled with researching discussion. Fans of the show uses the comments section like discussion forum. The Q&A session from the previous episode is so dramatic, that I love to watch. If you are an advanced user in astrophysics or lover of cosmology, this is the best place for you.

PBS Physics Girl:
DIANA, I don't know how to explain this channel and the host. I wonder with the way she prepares her topics. She is too funny and brilliant. I saw this channel in 2017. She explained about vortex rings. That gave me a good impression about this channel. I never got disappointed with the content. This also one of the finest channels in PBS series. They have many channels in the science community, but these 2 are remarkable. Nowadays, she is featuring in many popular YouTube channels as well.

SciShow:
If you are watching this video till here, you must be interested in science, that means you know this channel already. This is one of the elegant science channels I would say. They cover a wide variety of topics from bottom to top. Whatever be the questions we have in science, they already answered it. I would often say, this is one of the motivational factors that we started our channel. The presentation style and the video quality give interest to watch all the continuous episodes in one shot.

Numberphile:
This is one of my favourite channels in my subscription list. If you are a math lover, this channel is going to be a heavenly manna. Frankly speaking, I never thought that mathematicians think this much. Possibly whatever be the sequences we imagine in our mind, they have expressions for that. One of the lovely videos I have watched is “Golden Ratio” video series. They explained advanced concepts with brown paper and simple animation. I love many videos from their channel. You can see many of our videos extracted from this channel.

Smarter Everyday:
Destin is one of the pioneers in YouTube science community, he is one of my two inspirations in my science career. The way he sees the world is totally different. I love the most about this channel is, truthfulness. If he doesn't know something he admits and asks for help from online community to figure out the solution. I have seen many creators who copy content from one channel to another, including me. But he is the one create the content as part of his daily learning. His contents are inspiring and thought provoking. I would say that, you must follow this channel.

Veritasium:
Veritas means “Truth” in greek. This name suits this channel 100%. I don't know how the host Derik, gets into places where ordinary people are not permitted to even know. Nuclear launcher, global seed vault, roundest object in the world, Chernobyl and many exotic places. Concepts he presents are so unique that you would never have imagined before. His hosting style is the one I admire the most. He tries to explain complicated concepts in simple layman terms, which really helps newbies like me. He often takes simple questions to explain major concept hiding underneath.

Finally number 10.

Vsauce:
Many of you already know that if this channel is not there, then this is not listing. Micheal Steven is my personalÂ favourite for many reasons. I admired at his hosting style, script, concept, attitude, the way he connects the dots and the level of knowledge he shares in a simple video has no match. Mostly, he posts original content. The amount of information we could get from a single video would take minimum 1 week to digest. There is no wonder that he is one of the most successful science YouTubers in the world. I often wonder how the heck he could come up with these kind of thought provoking questions and answers. Earlier his mind field was paid, now he opened everything to public for free. I love his videos.

The list I have presented is purely from my personal view. It has nothing to do with their fame or popularity. I'm sure if you watch all the videos from their channel, then you may not possibly watch our “Rusty Science”. But it is ok, knowledge is power. The Josephus Problem

Introduction:

In first century AD, there was a historian aka scientist was living in jewish town called Yodfat, his name is Flavish Josephus. On his time, there was constant war happening between Romans and Jews. At once, Romans sieged the town Yodfat and it remained sieged for many days. And people had demand for food and essential commodities and they had no other choice but either surrender or embrace death. There were 40 solders with him in a cave for so long that they wanted to commit suicide. Everyone agreed but Josephus had different plan in his mind. He knew if he propose the idea of surrendering to Romans, then rest of the 40 soldiers will turn against him. so he devised a plan to escape.

He proposed an idea that everyone has to stand in circle and they have to kill the person stand next to him in circle until the last person stand. finally, the last person has to commit suicide. His plan is to stand in the place where if he stand he would be the last person, so that, once everyone is dead, he can surrender to Roman soldiers so that he may live.

Preface:

Mathematics is all about life application. Many believe that if you practice mathematics, either you can be a lecturer or an accountant. But it is not true. In this series we are going to see all the life application. Take the above problem as example. Josephus had a calculation in his mind that in which place if he stand he would survive. Will you be able to do it? I know you have taken your paper and pen to calculate for 41 people. But it is not the point here. When you derive a function it should not be limited to a single number. It should be common or applicable to any given number.

Mathematical Thinking:

For starters, if you are not sure how to derive a function, it is always a best practice collect data points, more number of data points the accurate the prediction will be. This is not my original article, I learned it from a mathematician called Daniel Erman from University of Wisconsin (through Numberphile). Let us see it from the following example, number of people can be represented as "n", and winning position can be defined as w(n).

Lets take example, If n=7, then the winning position will be w(n)=7, though the killing looks like a sequence in the beginning, very soon it will become chaos. So keeping that in mind, find the following table to reference.

Are you noticing the pattern? I am sure you can, Here is my understanding

Winner cannot be a person who stand in even seat. (Of course it makes sense that all the even people will surely get killed in the first round of execution), it is purely a fight of an odd number seats.
W(n) always increment by 2 until n>w(n). if the increment w(n)>n, then it resets to 1.
The reset happens only when the number is 2^x. Ex, 2,4,8,16,32.. It makes sense because if n is 2^x (x is a real whole number), when the first round is over, still the kill has to start from 1st person and remaining number of people are 2^x. it will continue till the last person.

Now we can start draw our conclusions.

Solution:

if we can bring the headcount to 2^x, then we will know whoever standing next will be the winner. because after that game is fairly straight forward. How we can do this. we can split the function as follows.

n = 2^x + r where n defines the total number of people, x defines maximum possible power of 2 in the given number and r defines the remaining people in the whole n. in this case if we eliminate r number of people, then remaining people will be 2^x, then we know as per our previous learning who ever starts will be the winner.

Lets see an example,

Given Number of people are 27,

Then Maximum possible 2^x = 16 where x=4, then representation can be 27 = 2^4+ r where r=11, now the eleventh person kill will be 22nd person. then the winner will be 23rd person.

We will check with out known number from the table.

n=11, then possible maximum 2^x = 2^3 then r value is 3, then the formula can be

w(n) = (2r)+1, that is (2*3)+1 = 7 (Verify it in the table)

Now let us come to Josephus problem, there were totally 41 people including him, then let's apply the formula.

n = 2^x+r --> n = 41, then 41=2^5+9. Now apply formula w(n)=2r+1; w(41)=(2*9)+1 = 19

Josephus must have stood in 19th position. His knowledge in mathematics saved his life, But we have no clear evidence to prove whether this story is true or not. but the point her is "Math is life saver" If you are good at mathematics, surely your life will be saved in trouble some situation.

Whether you are good at math or not, it doesn't matter. How you approach a problem will give better clue for the solution. In the upcoming episodes we will see more interesting math and real life application.

Alternate Solution:

Before we wind up this article, i have an another simple trick to creak this same problem, it needs little knowledge on binary numbers and how it is represented.

Let's take the same 3 examples to find out the easy solution.

Ex1: n= 27, Write down this number in binary =11011, Now move the MSB to LSB, that will be the solution of out problem statement. that is, 10111 in decimal 23,

Ex2: n = 11, binary = 1011, MSB move to LSB 0111, in decimal 7,

Ex3: n= 41, binary= 101001, MSB to LSB that is 010011, in decimal 19.

Conclusion

This is the beauty of mathematics, it not not necessary problem in only one way/method. It is possible to solve in multiple ways. Stay curious, Question everything.

What is Annular Solar Eclipse?

I am privileges to witness the greatest spacial event of 2019 with my own eyes. You are right. We had a wonderful annular solar eclipse today morning in south part of India. I wasn’t prepared enough to catch the full event in the camera. But I got a chance to live stream it in our Facebook. If you didn’t get a chance to see it. I have given that video link here. Please have a look. It was amazing.

Special about this event?

This kind of partial solar eclipse happened south India in the year of 2010 June. Before that it was in 1901. Close to India in Indian Ocean happened once in 1956. So if we are lucky enough we will have one in 2050. So if you live in India, if you live long enough you may get next eclipse in 2050. So it is very rare and beautiful event.

What is Solar Eclipse?

If sun, moon and earth aligns in a straight line, then it is called eclipse? Wrong,

Any object comes in between sun and the plant is called eclipse. It not only in earth, but in other planets also eclipses are possible, Again, the shadow in earth is not only casted by moon, Venus and mercury also can cast its shadow on earth, then it is called Venus eclipse and mercury eclipse respectively. Only room is a light should be blocked by a celestial body and casts shadow on some other object in the space. In that case, eclipse is happening in the solar system everyday. But we cannot see everyday. So if you get a chance to see it. Don’t miss it next time.

Types of Solar Eclipses:

So there are 3 type of eclipses are possible, Full (Total) Solar Eclipse, where moon would completely cover the sun. Second, Partial Solar Eclipse, which will not entirely cover the sun but portion of sun. Third, Annular Solar Eclipse, in which though moon tried to cover the sun completely, it cannot cover the entire surface of the sun and leave out the outer ring exposed. Overall, this celestial events are so amazing, whatever the things we hear from newspapers and from scientists press meeting can be witnessed with our own eyes. So it is the best experience we can experience.

How is it possible? Sun or Moon are not changing its size, but how is it possible that sometime, the moon can cover the entire sun, other time it is not.

What is Annular Solar Eclipse?

As Moon circle around the earth, earth is not circle around the sun in a circular path, instead it takes elliptical path. In one side of the sun earth approaches sun closely, in other side far away. This changes the speed of earths rotation speed as well.

Take this as an example, you have two balls in your hand. <Dirty Minds Stay Away 😉> one ball is bigger than the other, consider the bigger ball as sun and small one as moon. When the sun is far away from earth and moon, then the small ball can be completely covered by the small ball or moon. But when the earth is close to the sun (Especially in the months of December end to January beginning), then the moon will not be able to cover the sun completely, it will leave the outer portion of the sun. This would look like a ring. People call it as a "Ring of Fire".

Other way around if the eclipse happened, in the other side of the rotation path, then moon can cover the sun completely so it will end up in full solar eclipse.

How to Send Secret Messages

Introduction:
How do you deliver a super secret message to someone? Meet the person and tell them. In case they are far away, then send this message through some mediator and make him to deliver to the recipient. What if the mediator is not trust worthy or complete messed up, that he reads it or deliver to a wrong person. In that case, our message should be clear but nobody should be able to it understand it other than you and your recipient. Whatever be the shortcuts you remember right now to achieve it is called encryption.

History:

Encryption is not new, it is dated back to Stone Age. Even Stone Age man draw food source location in symbols with non-custom doodles in order to protect it from potential competitors. One major example is, 2nd million BC clay disc “Phaistos Disc”.

Even with our current technology, still we are trying to decipher it. But well known recorded ciphering is Ceascer’s Cipher which is used in 1st century BC. Alphabets were shifted by 3 characters backward and send to the sender. In that case, is unauthentic user tried to tried to read the message, it will look like garbage data. But only the people know how to cipher can understand the code behind that. You can read more about this ciphering here.

Childhood Game:

I remember when I was kid, used to play this encryption game. It goes like this English alphabets will be arranged in the table as follows. Each box has two characters, first one will be defined with the box shape and second character will be identified with box shape and a dot. Last week I have posted a picture in our Instagram page with this message, if you decipher that message, you will be find like this, “Our next episode is on Encryption”.

Flaw in Encryption:

But this encryption has a major flaw so as Ceaser algorithm. Because English language has a pattern of speech, that is, character “E”, will get used very often. If I track down often used character from the message, that I can consider as “E”,

it will open up most to the characters in the message. Similar to hangman puzzle. Other flaws are, Q will always go with U, In a sentence, 2 same letter exist, that most probably “L”s. Using this technique, people can partially decipher it, remaining can be guessed easily. The main reason for this flaw is character distribution in English language. Characters should be evenly distributed in order for it to make it complicated.

Cipher Disc:

See this cipher sheet, which I have created for this episode. Simply take 5 circle discs like this name them/number them. I’ll tell you the reason later. If you pay a closer attention all these 5 discs has a-z alphabets. Using this we are going to encrypt. Move these wheels either in clockwise or anti-clockwise direction as per you’re wise. Once you are okay with the rotation, that’s it. No more movement. Freeze the disc positions. Not take your letter to be encrypted. Note down your initial position and disc numbers with $ and # symbols respectively. Find character by character and find the corresponding characters from the remaining discs from the other wheel, catch here is, you should mention the wheel number and character. Once it is written, you can send this to your friend If your friend knows how to decipher, simply he will take the disencumbers mentioned # section and set it as mentioned in $ section Then he/she can locate the disc number and and character, corresponding letter can be easily spotted. The advantage of this wheel is, for same letter you can define 4 different character. It will distribute the characters across. In the meanwhile you can change your disc position but simply adding $ symbol. Not if you number around your word in a disc and create one new disc, that also can be used, it will be defined with # symbol, immediately your friend can change his disc to decipher it. It is a fun game to make. But this is again not a fail proof, because simply we are giving away the disc number, number of discs and dispositions. Descriptors can easily manipulate the character location using these information easily.

Voynich Manuscript:

Some people are interested in making others fool using ciphering, one of the well known cheating encryption can be found in Voynich manuscript, it is written in early 15th century AD, it is spotted in 1914 by a polish dealer. It has weird looking plants, animals and constellations and writing. Some believe it is written by some aliens, or some intelligent life form. But we are not sure who wrote it. With our current technology we are not able to decipher what exactly it is trying to say. Most of the cryptologist believe this it is some form of hoax, because in the 14-15th century people were overmuch eager to look for magic and supernatural things. So somebody might have written some non-sense and made money out of it. Fortunately I got hold of that book in PDF format, I have attached in this blog post. Encryption in Military:

In second world war time, very often people used encryption to pass the information around. The need for encryption was very crucial because if the information reached wrong hands, it could make a major impact in the phase of war. So Germans were using encryption a lot. their famous encrypting machine is called enigma machine. it had advanced mechanism like, initial seed, randomizer and decryption mechanism in a same system. You can learn more about this machine operation wiki and here. Each country had their own machine to send and receive messages from their troops. It is a interesting story. you can read more about these encryptor and it's functionality in the internet.

Conclusion:

If you want one more easy method, without any cipher wheel or any third party equipment nothing but a simple book. I have made a bonus video in Facebook, feel free to check that out. It is quite fine to play around ciphering and deciphering. Bonus Section:

How to send a encrypted message to your friend with only a simple book. Take a book as of your choice. Make sure that book has at least 500 pages like dictionary or encyclopedia. Then write down your message which needs to be encrypted. Once ready, find all the words in random pages on the book, note down the page number, row number and column numbers of each word. Now start cipher your message, start with that books ISBN number, then your message; word by word, though the word is same try to pick it from different pages, It will randomize the encryption. Page, row and column numbers needs to be separated as per you and your friend agree upon. In this case, if somebody sees this message, they will simply see the numbers, they will not be able to understand until they know the encryption algorithm.

This one of the easy way to send message to different part of the world easily (through email). Simply the other person has to order the book from amazon using ISBN number and start decrypting the message. But not only this, the encryption is all about creativity and imagination, you can write your own logic and creativity inside to create your own protocol which can be shared with your friend. To Frankenstein, Travel Faster Than The Speed of Light

Hello Everyone,

This is a continuation of our previous episode "Can we see live dinosaur in 21st century?" If you haven't read it, I highly recommend you to read it before continuing this article. Or let me summarize quickly, photon is the basic building block of our vision. This photon can travel in straight line about 300 thousand kilometers per second. the distance photon can travel in one year is called one light year. Photons hit on dinosaurs 250 million years ago could have reach 250 million light years by now. Frankenstein galaxy is in approximately 250 million years away, in that case, from Frankenstein galaxy if you look at earth now, we can see dinosaur. But how to get there, that is the question we are going to answer today.

Introduction:

To go to a place where gravity undefiled light took 250 million light years in just a matter of our life time may look impossible, but it is not. if we know the special theory of relativity that will look very simple. because it explains a beautiful relationship between speed and time.

Time Dilation:

whenever an object started moving, it starts experiencing time slowly than the object at rest. what? experiencing time slowly? what does it mean? Time is not absolute it is relative. Any given instance, person at rest and person moving will disagree the rate at time changes. In other words, for a moving person time will move slowly than the stationary person. For example, a person driving in a car 100Kmph, then he experiences time 0.00000000926% slower than the person in rest. When speed increases, the person experiences time slowly.

As shown here, whenever speed increases, rate of change of time decreases with respect to the stationary object. ROSS 154 star is 9.68 Light Years away, for a stationary viewers, it would take a space craft to reach approximately 11 years to reach if he travels in 90% speed of light, that is 270000 Kmps. but for the traveler, it would only took around 4.7 years. It is called time dilation. It is common that people disagree with time when one is in station and other in motion. For a simplistic example, international space station is too fast that it experience 7ms less than earth in every six months.

For Frankenstein galaxy, as a stationery viewer it would take 250 million years to take if he travels with 99.99999999999999% speed of light. But for the cruising team it would only take 4 years and 7 months.

Travel Faster Than Light:

But that doesn't seem right, because though it takes ~4.6 Years for the traveler, still it would taking one more 250 Million light years. so surely we will miss the dinosaur event. So we need to come up with other method. What if we travel faster than light? then obviously we will over take the past and still go further past right? if you are familiar with DC's flash,when he time travels,he use to see the past events, that means he is over taking the photon's once reflected from the object. this way it will be easy for us to easily over take our past and reach the destination.

In this example, light from the source and hit on the object and travel in the straight line as we seen in previous episode example, but if a person can travel twice the speed of light he would over take the photon and eventually he will see the events once again. See the counter it shows 2, space traveler also can see number 2, but he cannot see number 1, because it was gone last second. now the next second counter will become 3, person A will see number 2,but you will see the past event number 1, since you travel twice (2x) the speed of light. This same phenomenon will push you further into past if we keep increase the speed than the speed of light. if you can increase the speed 250 million times the speed of light, then in one year you can reach Frankenstein galaxy, as we have seen above, if time dilation happens, you will eventually reach in fraction of second/next instance as a traveler. There are many hypothesis claims that we will reach backward in time. But any way once you reach there, look back and see the earth, you will be able to see the dinosaurs walking around the earth right now. it is easy-breezy. But all the hypothesis will have a catch.I hope most of you will know it. But still anyway I will explain.

Challenges:

As per the special theory of relativity, speed of light (C) is constant. to reach this velocity, the object must be mass-less. Again it stated that anything with mass can not reach/go beyond the speed of light. So in that case, it is difficult to go 250 million times faster than light. With current understanding of physics, it looks impossible. But it may not be in the future, who knows.

Apart from that, past and future time cone, such a powerful telescope, amount of light reaches that galaxy and Power source to thrust the spacecraft in the speed of light, in that speed, body experiencing G force, space dust hit the space craft in the speed of light are the few other major concerns to discuss.

But many sci-fi movies are talking about black-hole, warm-hole, infinite string and faster than light through anti-matter, what is it? will that help any way? Wait for next article!

Conclusion:
