Google has decided to experiment with new and unique ideas on Gmail with a new section called Gmail Labs. Google receives lots of cool ideas from employees and their users, but they don’t really implement those ideas because they are not sure, whether users will like it or not. Gmail Labs will fill the gap between ideas and implementation.

You can manually go to https://mail.google.com/mail/?labs=1#settings and activate the labs feature on your account. Before you head over and start playing with Gmail Labs, please keep in mind that they are experimental. It may break, change or disappear without any notice.

The Windows XP Service Pack 3 will be released to the public tomorrow. A lot of users have already downloaded the service pack from various unofficial locations like download portals and the Bittorrent P2P network. Google Talk "Labs Edition" is an experimental build of the popular Google Talk desktop client, which borrows several features like group chat, emoticons, and tabs from the online Google Talk gadget. Labs Edition of Google Talk has been neatly integrated with Google Calendar and Orkut to provide event and scrap notification, on the other hand, some very functional features like voice chat and file transfer have been removed. AIM integration which we saw in Gmail chat is still missing. I’m beginning to wondering, if all those missed out features have anything to do with the ongoing Skype acquisition rumours.

When we read the announcement that higher quality videos would come to Youtube we were delighted that the video quality would finally see an upgrade. Apparently the conversion has started and some videos are already available in different quality versions. It still looks like Youtube is testing settings and stuff and that not everyone can access those higher quality videos yet.

You can also bet that it takes some time to convert the 140+ million videos hosted on the website. The default video resolution is 320×200 and the two new resolutions that are tested are 448×336 and 480×360. To test it you only need to append the parameters &fmt6 for 448×336 or &fmt18 for 480×360 video resolutions.

Not all videos are converted as of yet and videos that have not are displaying the loading screen all the time.

You can improve your system performance, boot time and get rid of programs you don't want running in the background by modifying your msconfig to do a Selective Startup.

1. Click Start -> Run.

2. Type msconfig and press Enter.

3. In the System Configuration Utility click the Startup tab.

4. Uncheck programs you don't want to load each time your computer starts.

5. Click OK and restart the computer. You will receive a prompt, just check the box to not receive the prompt anymore and click OK.

Microsoft recently unveiled its new website called Microsoft Student Experience beta, aimed specifically for students. The site is divided into four main sections, namely, Academics, Socialize, Get Involved, and Careers. Each of these sections contains Featured Products/ Resources, How-Tos, and Downloads. For instance, the Academics section features Microsoft products like Office Ultimate 2007, OneNote 2007, Word 2007, Excel 2007, and PowerPoint 2007.

You can learn how to perform a certain task using each of these aforementioned tools. So the next time you are stuck on how to merge documents in Microsoft Word, you know where to go!

The Socialize section features Windows Live, Windows Mobile, Zune, Xbox 360, and MSN Video.

Using the Get Involved section, you can participate in various initiatives from Microsoft, such as, The i’m Initiative, Search and Give, Ninemillion, MSN Green, and Share your smiles.

Get $500 for Catching a Software Pirate

The Software & Information Industry Association (SIIA) will now reward you with $500, if you catch software pirate red handed. If you purchase counterfeit software from online auction sites like eBay, then you might be eligible for this reward.

SIIA calls this campaign as "Don’t Get Mad, Get Even", and it will run from December 13, 2007 to January 30, 2008:

The first 100 individuals who inadvertently purchase counterfeit software on an auction site, complete an application to participate in the "Don’t Get Mad, Get Even" program, submit the application to SIIA by no later than 5 pm EST January 30, 2008 and satisfy all the eligibility requirements necessary to participate in the program, will be eligible to receive up to $500 from SIIA. The payment is intended to help the buyer purchase a legitimate copy of the software.

The counterfeit software must be from a company who has partnered with SIIA. Microsoft has not partnered with SIIA, which means… you won’t be eligible for $500, if you just purchased pirated copy of Vista from eBay. However, their partners list does include some big names like Apple, Adobe, Nero, Symantec and McAfee. Go try your luck on eBay to spot some pirated software!

Google, Zoho, ThinkFree probably think they're pretty cool because they let you create, edit, and share office documents online. But none has quite as many features as Microsoft Office or its open source competitor: OpenOffice.org.

Now there's a way to run a OpenOffice.org inside your web browser. No need to download and install anything (except for Java). Online desktop startup Ulteo has released a beta version of a web-based interface for OpenOffice.org 2.3. You can launch any OpenOffice application including Writer, Calc, Impress, Base, or Draw.

The application is quite obviously in beta. It loads slowly and it's kind of difficult to navigate between windows. But we dig the concept. The goal is to integrate OpenOffice.org with Ulteo's online desktop, which is currently only available to registered beta testers. Users will get 1GB of free online storage space and the ability to create and edit files from any computer with a web browser.

Ulteo also has a pretty decent pedigree. The company's chairman is Gael Duval, founder of Mandriva Linux.
