Can you tell readers a little about yourself, your family, and your backstory?

My husband, daughter, and I live in the heart of Silicon Valley in California. I work for two nonprofits in the adoption and foster care space and my husband works in big tech. My daughter turned one in October, so our first year has been trying to navigate our careers and balance our involvement with church community. 

How did you first get into blogging/photography?

I’ve always loved writing and I now frequently write about parenting and adoption (I was adopted and my husband and I would love to adopt in the future)! I have a book coming out this fall titled “It’s Okay to Talk About Adoption” that I contributed to as well. 

What are some things that have helped you balance work life and mom life?

We receive help from both our parents, which is wonderful, and our church has been great at providing emotional support and play dates. I also work remotely, which offers some flexibility around the house.

How do you plan on incorporating sustainability into motherhood?

Sustainability is something I care about, as I visited the polar regions as a high school student, fell in love with the natural environment, and started advocating for conservation. In our community, we frequently participate in Buy Nothing groups, where toys and children’s items can be passed around instead of always buying new.

What are your favorite activities to get your family out and about?

We go to the park frequently and meet up with other moms in our church co-op. We also enjoy children’s museums, pools and the beach, and fall pumpkin patches.

What's your latest favorite memory with your child?

I’ve enjoyed traveling with my daughter and husband. So far in her first year of life she has visited Hong Kong, Indonesia, Korea, Iceland, and Mexico. I like seeing the wonder in her eyes as she learns new skills like walking and climbing and enjoys new experiences ranging from first rides at Disneyland to glacier exploration. 

What do you most look forward to in this season?

In this season of life, my daughter is learning how to explore new surroundings and I love how we can go on more adventures. She points at everything that is new and wants us to explain new objects and concepts to her, which is super cute.

What holiday traditions does your family partake in?

We often split holidays between Canada (where my parents live) and California. In Canada, we love sled rides in the snow. This will be our first Christmas in California, but I imagine we will look at holiday lights and enjoy baking treats. 

What can your followers expect to see?

I plan to continue blogging personally about the challenges of work and motherhood and writing frequently on adoption and foster care as well. 

What is one lesson you've learned about motherhood that you wish you could share with other moms?

I've learned that motherhood makes you a more giving person. I've learned so much about myself and have been stretched to sacrifice hobbies, time for work, my physical body, friendships, and more to keep a little human alive and healthy. This has increased my appreciation for my own parents and how much they gave to me and my sisters each day during our childhood. It has also increased my capacity to love beyond myself and experience my daughter's joy through her eyes. 

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Can you tell our readers a little about yourself, your family, and your background?

My name is Whitley and I'm a wife to my husband Chase, mom to our two kids ages 3 and 1 and together we are raising our family on a few acres in Minnesota! I have also been a photographer for 10 years and now split my time between being home with my kids and keeping up with my photography business. I am passionate about homemaking, interior design, and getting outside and enjoying God's creation as much as possible!

How did you get started as a photographer?

Straight out of high school my grandparents blessed me with my first camera and being a Senior in high school, I started taking senior photos for friends and classmates. I was completely shocked by the growth that happened within the first few months! I had planned to do photography as a side hustle as I earned my degree in college, but I unenrolled the week before move-in day because I realized my career had already started! I'm forever grateful for those early years and that the leap of faith opened the door to a business I have now been running for 10 years!

What’s been your favorite part of your photography career?

I'm continually blown away that I get to be a part of capturing families year after year and watching their families grow. Many times a client starts as a bride and as the years pass, I'm seeing them welcome their first baby and a few years later, chasing their toddler through a field during a family session. The relationships will forever be my favorite part.

What are some things that have helped you balance work life and mom life?

Oh this is an ever-changing, constant topic of conversation in our home! My personality is the kind that would love a black-and-white, hard-and-fast manual for how to balance motherhood and work, and in an even better world, I'd like that manual to never change until my kids are grown and gone. As we all know, this isn't the case. I've had to learn to take things year by year and create a schedule that works for both my business and motherhood. As my kids grow and seasons change, that schedule will always look different. I'm very grateful for work that allows me to make those changes as needed. 

Tell us about your recent move. What are you most excited for?

We are thrilled after the early years of our marriage living in the suburbs to have found a few acres to call home! We are so excited to give our kids a childhood where they spend a majority of their time outdoors and in explorative play, fully embracing the four seasons Minnesota has to offer. Most recently, we are excited to introduce 10 chickens to our coop this April and to take care of them as a family. We'll also be growing our first year of Dahlias which is extremely exciting.. but that one may just be exciting for me! 

How has motherhood influenced your creativity?

In many ways I've had to accept that my time for creative outlets has shrunk, but simultaneously have found that if I look at roles I have been given to steward as avenues of creativity that I am re-inspired. Creating a welcoming home, watching my kids play outside, and working together to cultivate the land have become a new creative outlet for us. Bringing my kids along for the journey is a gift!

Is there anything else you’d like to share?

In the early years of motherhood, it's easy to overwhelm your kids with endless toys and opportunities. I was guilty of this during my oldest's first year of life, but after he turned 2, I learned that simple is better. I am continually blown away by how little you can put in front of children and how much play they can make of it.

My son's favorite toys are open ended and that's why I LOVE the toys that are offered at Smiling Tree. Can you tell readers a little bit about yourself and your family?

Hello! I am Jennifer! I’m a wife, mother, writer, homemaker, and passionate homeschooler who finds inspiration in the Charlotte Mason philosophy. My husband and I are blessed with two wonderful children—a daughter who is 5 and a son who is 9 with disabilities.

We live in the mountains of Colorado, and enjoy going on adventures, exploring, and being in nature. Our days are filled with the rich and intentional learning, alongside the strength and peace we draw from our faith. Our homeschooling journey has been one of growth, grace, and learning not just for our children, but for me as well.

When I’m not homeschooling, you’ll find me weaving words on the trail that tell stories of motherhood, disabilities, grief, homeschooling, and life.

What led to the decision to homeschool your kids? And do you ever wish you had done things differently?

Our decision to homeschool was born from a desire to cultivate a deeper connection between learning, faith, and family as well as being able to adapt and accommodate the individual needs of the learning environment for my son and his disabilities. His learning pace and style are different, and homeschooling gives us the ability to tailor lessons to his specific needs.

Homeschooling allows us to slow down, honor our children's strengths, and provide support where needed. Through homeschooling we are given the opportunity to learn in all different ways, giving us the time, flexibility and freedom to learn at home, while we travel, on the go, or out in nature. 

While it is not always easy, I don’t have any regrets. Homeschooling has given us the ability to meet both of our children exactly where they are, and to walk this path together as a family. Homeschooling my son has taught me that every child’s journey is their own, and it is a privilege to be able to nurture his unique gifts. The beauty of homeschooling is that it is adaptable—you learn to pivot when needed and trust that you are exactly where you need to be, even on the tough days.

Do you have any favorite small shops or businesses or social media accounts that you love that have homeschooling products/tips and tricks/inspiration?

Absolutely! I’m always looking for resources that help me stay connected and encouraged in my homeschooling journey. Some of my favorite resources include:

• CMEC (Charlotte Mason Educational Center): This is one of the primary resources I rely on for structuring our homeschool. We just started our second year with the CMEC and use this full course curriculum. We love it so much!  Their curriculum is not only beautifully aligned with Charlotte Mason’s philosophy, but also incredibly adaptable for families with varying needs, including children with special needs.

• Simply Charlotte Mason: A wealth of practical, faith-based resources for those who follow the Charlotte Mason method. Their curriculum suggestions and guidance have been incredibly helpful for us.

• A Living Learning Co: My best friend Brit @thesmittyfamgram, launched @alivinglearningco recently where she writes and creates living unit studies that truly are a blessing to families.  Her personal page is also full of an abundance of homeschool resources for every family, it is a gift to homeschool, learn from, and do life alongside her and her family. 

• Pip and J Papery: My friends Tori & Becky offer beautiful, high-quality tools and resources that are perfect for bringing a touch of beauty and intentionality to your homeschool.

• For daily inspiration, I love following my dear friend Mary, @ourkinandhome on Instagram. She shares Charlotte Mason-inspired content and encouragement. Mary also creates templates and practical tools and ideas for homeschooling that have enriched our homeschool experience. You will also find inspiration from her, on how to create a peaceful, connected home environment for your children.

These accounts and resources have been so encouraging, providing inspiration, tips, and the practical support I need as a homeschooling mother. They remind me that there’s beauty in every season of this journey.

What advice would you give someone who is also interested in homeschooling their children?

First and foremost, trust that you are capable of providing an enriching education for your children. You don’t need to have all the answers or be an expert— take small steps. Don’t feel pressure to recreate a traditional classroom at home; instead, embrace the freedom and flexibility that homeschooling allows. Learn alongside your children and know that it’s okay if things don’t always go as planned.

Surround yourself with a community, whether online or in person. Having a network of like-minded mothers can provide encouragement, support, and insights when you need them. Most importantly, give yourself grace. Some days will be hard, but those days are often the ones where the most growth happens. Remember that homeschooling is about the long game—about building strong relationships, instilling values, and nurturing a love for learning that will last a lifetime.

What is the easiest AND most challenging part of homeschooling?

The easiest part, for me, is the joy of being with my children everyday and watching my children grow in knowledge and character, and having the freedom to adapt our learning to their needs. It’s incredibly rewarding to see them engage with the world in a way that sparks curiosity and wonder, whether that’s through a living book, a nature walk, or a hands-on project. The flexibility to incorporate our values and nature into our daily lessons makes learning feel like a natural extension of life itself.

The most challenging is the internal pressure I place on myself. There’s a constant temptation to compare our homeschool journey to the world’s way of doing things or to feel like we need to fit into a certain mold. Breaking free from that and embracing the beauty of what we are creating as a family has been a continual process.

I’ve had to remind myself that this journey doesn’t have to look like traditional schooling, and that’s okay. Releasing that pressure has been key in finding peace and joy in the day-to-day, even when things don’t go as planned. On the hardest days, I lean into that grace and remind myself that I have been called to do this for a reason.

You have a son with special needs, do you approach teaching him and his lesson plans any differently than you do your daughter?

I approach his education with the needed adaptations and accommodations that he needs. There are days when lessons will take longer to match his pace. Flexibility is key when the plans for that day have to shift.  His learning needs sometimes require shorter, more engaging lessons with a strong emphasis on sensory activities and hands-on learning.

With our approach, I can tailor his education to focus on living ideas and experiences rather than memorization. We also incorporate therapies into his daily routine, which help reinforce the skills he’s learning in a more structured setting.

His education requires me to think outside the box, and while it’s challenging at times, it’s also incredibly rewarding. I’ve learned to celebrate the small victories and to appreciate his unique way of engaging with the world. He has taught me so much about patience, perseverance, and the beauty of seeing things through a different lens.

What does a "typical" day look like for you as a mother, homemaker, homeschooler, content creator, and wife?

My mornings usually start early before the children wake up with quiet time. After we enjoy breakfast together, we being our lessons for the day. Our morning schooling consists of short, focused lessons. We spend time on literature, reading, narration, history, geography, natural history and math to name a few. Depending on the day, we may also have different therapies for my son woven into our day.

In between, I manage household tasks—laundry, meal prep, tidying up—while keeping an eye on independent work. We always prioritize time outside, whether it's a nature walk, hiking or just playing in the yard in the early afternoons. Nature is an essential part of our homeschooling, and it serves as a peaceful reset for the whole family.

In the late afternoons we all have some quiet time where the kids will play, work on art projects, read or listen to an audiobook in their rooms, and I will use that time to write and get some work done.

Our evenings are dedicated to family time, often reading together or playing games. After the kids go to bed, I catch up with my husband, reflecting on the day and preparing for the next.

Homeschooling is a journey that requires patience and a lot of grace. It’s not about perfection—it’s about being present and creating an environment where your children can grow not just academically, but spiritually and emotionally.

Light Clean Needed?

Wipe your damp cloth directly onto the wooden blocks/toys. Don’t soak the wood. Use a soft cloth to wipe down each toy, ensuring you get into all the nooks and crannies.

Deep Clean Required?

For toys that need a deeper clean (think those that have been through a particularly sticky playdate), add a few drops of Castile soap to a bowl of warm water. Dip your cloth in the soapy water and wring it out well before wiping down the toys. Again, avoid soaking the wood. Rinse the cloth with plain water and wipe the toys again to remove any soap residue.

Step 2: Dry Thoroughly

After cleaning, make sure the toys dry completely before your little ones play with them again. Moisture can cause the wood to warp or develop mold. Lay the toys out on a clean towel in a well-ventilated area until they are completely dry.

Step 3: Sand

As needed, hand-sand with fine-grit sandpaper, paying special attention to the edges. This keeps your handmade toys and blocks smooth enough for your little ones tiny fingers.  However, you should skip this step for our Spell Well Name Puzzles. 

Step 4: Condition the Wood

Once the toys are clean and dry, it’s a good idea to condition the wood to keep it from drying out and cracking. Use a clean cloth to apply a light coat of food-grade oil to nourish and protect your toy. We suggest olive, coconut, or flaxseed oil.

Rub the oil into the wood in a circular motion. This will not only keep the wood looking beautiful but also add an extra layer of protection against future dirt and grime. You can skip this step for any unoiled wood toy/block such as our Teethers. 

Tips and Tricks

• Regular Maintenance: Wipe down wooden toys weekly with a dry cloth and do a more thorough cleaning once a month.
• Avoid Submerging: Never soak wooden blocks and toys in water. This can cause the wood to swell and crack.

I have a major in elementary education, human development and family science. These majors have definitely made me a more informed mom and have driven my passion in creating hands-on and play-based learning activities for my boys. Having these backgrounds have given me some of the knowledge I need to create activities that are age appropriate for my boys and will help prepare them for school in the future.

You have such creative and engaging ideas for sensory bins and hands-on activities that are also educational, where do you get the inspiration for the themes?

My inspiration for my themes comes from a few different things. First, there are so many amazing creators out there. Social media is full of individuals who are excited to share ideas and have a love for creating content and activities that benefit our littles.

Second, my boys! When they are interested in the “theme”, they will be enthusiastic about learning. Their interests are always evolving, making learning a fun process. Lastly, I like to bring in themes that revolve around holidays and seasons. It’s a great way to get your littles to learn about these topics.

What are 5 basic items/props/supplies every mom should have on-hand for sensory play? And where can you find them?

Sensory play does not have to be complicated. My favorite items can most likely be found in your homes! Rice, beans, pasta, water, and measuring cups/spoons are all perfect for sensory play. Playdough and kinetic sand are great items as well. You can find them at most stores! Thrift and dollar stores are also perfect for sensory items. They have all the bases and loose parts you could need! Plus, budget friendly activities are a huge advantage!

Some small shops that share tons of fun inspo using their products include Preschool for Nuggys, Little Creators Co., Natura Toys, Colette's Play Sets. And, of course, we love incorporating our picture alphabet blocks from Smiling Tree Toys! 

What has been your favorite theme/activity you've done? Which one has your kiddos enjoyed the most?

I think my favorite theme has been Christmas. It’s such a magical time of the year. My boys are car and truck lovers, so I would say their favorite theme was our construction theme. It was filled with tons of hands-on play activities and, of course, toy trucks!

What is a piece of advice for anyone wanting to start exploring more sensory and intentional play with their little ones?

If you’re wanting to start sensory and play-based learning at home, start slow and just do it. Sensory play can be messy, but don’t let that scare you. Set some base rules like keeping things out of the mouth and keeping messes to a contained area. Sensory play is fun and filled with tons of benefits and is a great way to implement play and learning!

This time of the year is SO busy that it's no wonder sometimes the little details slip through the cracks; like the stocking stuffers. Which is how they inevitably end up filled at the last minute with chintzy, plastic, quickly forgotten items that will break and lose their appeal in a matter of hours. 

Don't worry, I'm guilty of this too!

Mariah shares how she is working towards a "minimalist" lifestyle, her favorite eco-friendly brands, and how she and her husband are prepping for the arrival of their baby girl this winter.

Can you tell readers a little bit about yourself?

My name is Mariah Barents. I am 24 years old, married to my high school sweetheart and expecting our first baby in January. I grew up in Arizona, but moved to Richmond, Virginia two years ago; we love it out here!

I am a content creator, but I am also in the process of obtaining my cosmetology license right now. I love putting my creativity to the test in many ways – clearly. 

We also have three fur babies, and are currently renovating our home in preparation for our baby girl! When I'm not busy, I love cooking, watching my favorite tv shows, and hanging out with friends! 

How do you plan on incorporating sustainability into motherhood?

I really am passionate about supporting local businesses and farms so I plan to buy as much as I can locally. Living in VA, there are so many local businesses that I know and love!

We also have always been a recycling family, and will continue to do so after the baby arrives. And as my family grows, teaching my children to value wiser choices is going to be really important!

What aspects of becoming a new mom are you most looking forward to?

I think children are such blessings and nothing can compare to the love you have for your child. Knowing that our baby is half of me and half of my husband is so special! I am excited to see how our children grow and mature with the characteristics I see in both myself and my husband.

I am also really looking forward to celebrating the many 'firsts' in our baby's life, and have a little bestie to do life with.

 

Do you have any tips for other moms wanting to pursue the "minimalist" lifestyle?

To prepare for our baby's arrival, my husband and I are starting to declutter and get rid of the things we really don't need. Quality over quantity is such a good mindset to have in general, but especially with a baby on the way.

I'm also a big list girl and have been creating lists of things we definitely need for baby girl, and crossing out anything we don't.

Social media can also be a real pain when trying to live a minimalist lifestyle, so muting or just not limiting the time I spend on it has helped me not overbuy things as well. 

 

What other sustainable, eco-friendly accounts or brands have you been loving lately?

I love the brand Seventh Generation and Grove Co for all of my cleaning supplies! I am also super excited to use the compostable diapers we purchased from DYPER, and have registered for the play gym by LOVEVERY! As we head into fall, what are your seasonal must-haves?

Fall is my favorite season by far so I love this question!! I'm an UGG girl, so of course, gotta have my UGGs. Pumpkin Spice anything, especially the PS Cold Brew from Starbucks. Cozy pajamas and thick chunky socks are a must-have for chilly evenings. I also really love a good coat and sweater to keep me warm.

These 10 tips can help guide and inspire valuable teaching moments, while also keeping things fun and exciting.

Let's get started!

1. Purchase a name puzzle.

An obvious first step, I know. But an important one, nonetheless. And while *technically* any name puzzle will do, we are quite partial to our own.

The sturdy walnut base and smooth maple letters are simple, timeless and make the perfect gift. We also offer extra personalization touches with the addition of a shape and/or back message. 

We create each puzzle one at a time in our family's Minnesota red barn wood shop.  And like all our toys, they are finished with our organic oil/beeswax blend.

Here are a few additional specs: letters are 2.75" tall x 0.25" thick and bases are 4" tall x 0.5" thick and 8"-23" in length.

2. Start with simple names.

If possible, choose a name puzzle that has your child's name in uppercase or lowercase letters, depending on what they are more familiar with.

Our name puzzles come in all uppercase letters that will help with cementing letter recognition. 

It's also usually easier to start with just their first name, before introducing a middle name, last name or nickname, especially if they are new to learning letters. 

3. Introduce the puzzle.

Present the name puzzle to your child and explain that it's a special puzzle with their name and their letters on it.

Make it exciting and engaging. 

Practice putting each of the letters into the correct space with them and explain that this puzzle is unique and one-of-a-kind because each letter helps spell their name. 

4. Repetition.

Repetition is key to learning. Begin by saying their name aloud and pointing to the letters as you say them. For example, if the child's name is "Katie," say, "K-A-T-I-E, Katie."

And yes, mama, you'll probably get tired of doing this 168165859 times a day, but each time you do, they are becoming more and more familiar with each letter, sound and shape. You got this! 

5. Hands-On Learning.

Encourage your child to touch and hold the puzzle pieces. Let them explore the shape and feel of the letters. You can say things like, "This is the letter 'K,' and it's the first letter in your name, Katie."

6. Visual and Auditory Learning.

Combine visual and auditory cues. Point to each letter as you say the name. You can use your finger to trace the letters while saying the corresponding sounds.

This helps little ones not only start to recognize what each letter looks like, but also what each one feels like, which will be helpful down the road when they start to write their own names. 

7. Involve Play.

Make. It. Fun.

The fastest way to win over a toddler? Turn it into a game or play activity. They'll be having so much fun, they won't even realize how much they're actually learning in the process too. 

Ask your child to find a specific letter in their name puzzle, like "Can you find the letter 'T'?"

Or tell them you'll time them to see how quickly they can complete the puzzle after scrambling the letters up. 

Once they have successfully completed the challenge, make sure their job-well-done is recognized and rewarded. (see next).  

8. Reward Efforts.

Praise and reward your child's accomplishment. 

Positive reinforcement is very motivating. When they successfully complete their name puzzle or recognize the letters, offer praise and perhaps a small reward like a sticker or simple treat. 

Even a "great job" or "I'm so proud of you" can go a long way in building confidence and excitement. 

9. Use the Puzzle as a Reference.

As your child becomes more familiar with the puzzle and their name, use it as a reference in everyday life.

For example, if you have alphabet magnets on your fridge, point out the letters in their name.

Or as you're grocery shopping, point out various food or items that begin with the letters in their name.

Name puzzles are not only great for learning names, they also help set the foundation for understanding letters, sounds and syllables in real-life too.  

10. Progress Gradually.

As your child becomes more confident with their own name, you can introduce more complex activities, like spelling other simple words or names using the puzzle pieces.

We have an entire uppercase alphabet set that can help aid in this if additional letters are needed. 

You can even begin to work on a sibling's or pet's name in the same gradual, patient way.

But remember, learning should be enjoyable. Keep the activity fun and interactive. Sing songs, play games, and be enthusiastic about their learning journey.

My family is the greatest blessing in my life! My husband and I met almost 10 years ago, and were married a few short years later.

3 months into our marriage we found out we were pregnant with my oldest. She turned our world upside down—in the best way!

When she turned one, we found out I was pregnant yet again. We waited until I gave birth to discover that it was another beautiful girl! Our wild, crazy, and fun-loving, middle child.

In early 2022, we had a surprise blessing! I managed to conceive (even though I was on birth control) our third beautiful baby girl!! We were shocked but she came at the perfect time.

How did you get into influencing/blogging/fashion?

Throughout each pregnancy, I developed a passion for sharing products I found beneficial for the different seasons of life and motherhood. Whether it be different styles to wear at 5 months pregnant or a favorite beauty product, I wanted to share my experiences with others. People liked what I had to say and what was sharing, and my following grew from there.

What is currently your favorite fashion trend?

I'm currently loving DENIM. Anything denim with some bright white sneaks and I'm SOLD. The 90's are back, baby!

What is your favorite sustainable or clean brand for yourself?

How has motherhood impacted your creativeness?

Becoming a mother has definitely widened by creativity. My scope used to be so small and if something didn't fit within my typical post or niche, I wouldn't share. Now, I share everything! Kids clothes, home decor, beauty products, food, etc. Why? Because these things are important to us mamas. I didn't realize that before I became one myself.

Do you have any advice for other moms trying to find their personal style or hobbies?

Don't be afraid to share. Don't get too hung up on your "niche." Yes, it's important to be cohesive but we can't get the true essence of who you are if you're leaving major parts out!

What is your family's favorite summertime activity?

Our current favorite activity is swimming in the pool. We grab our favorite popsicles and spend all day splashing around!
