Mirage 7 is one of those games that came out of nowhere for many people, and it started to impress with its premise and nifty gameplay ideas. At its core, this is an action-adventure title with a fantasy quest through the desert. But what makes it different is the interesting sci-fi twist. Granted, this might not be to everyone’s liking, however I like it when developers are trying something different, and it’s definitely the case here.

As you start, you (Nadira) are thrown into the desert with Jiji, who is your lizard companion. You need to access water, build up a fire and eliminate enemies that try to kill you. It’s pretty basic stuff for an adventure and survival game, however once you finish that, the focus is clearly on finding your sister. What you learn is that Nadira’s sister was grabbed by soldiers years ago, and the only way to get her back is to ask Princess Taishma for assistance.

Fatekeeper Preview (PC)

Fatekeeper is the first game developed by Paraglacial, and it aims to step into the shoes of Dark Messiah of Might and Magic, one of the most popular first-person action RPGs from the past 20 years. Unfortunately, we never had a true successor to that game, but Fatekeeper aims to do that and a lot more.

Right off the bat, we should note that the game is made only by 13 people, and it just entered early access. You have around 2 hours of playable content, and the game manages to provide a very intense, albeit short experience. You take the role of Kor Tenarim, a watcher who wants to complete his training. He also has a rodent partner called Kor Guran, and the two focus on braving enemies using magic and melee attacks.

The game’s scenery is stunning, and it feels made by a much larger theme. The attention to detail is also incredible, from the blood pouring from enemies, down to the very detailed leaves you can find within the game. It all looks amazing, and it makes...

These days, FMV games have become quite popular, and they are improving in quality quite a bit. The idea of having real-life people as videogame characters and controlling an interactive movie is a lot of fun. Hacked The Streamer is a game that clearly shows how challenging and tricky the streaming world can be.

Sure, at first glance, it all feels glamorous and a job where you make easy money. But clearly, it’s much more than that. It just goes to show that the challenges that you can face are hidden, but still very dangerous. Simply put, in Hacked: The Streamer we follow Beril, a streamer known online as PinkiePie. She is growing as a streamer and has just got access to her first large sponsor.

She enjoys that success and wants to celebrate with the fanbase and the moderation team. But as that happens, we have a viewer threatening to expose her via a variety of personal revelations. That viewer wants $50000 from her, otherwise he will reveal the videos and possibl...

This scientist is starting to get on my nerves. He really wants to test how efficient taking out arachnids using nuclear missiles is, when I’ve already demonstrated that mixing chemical and radiation-armed mechs offers a clear solution to his bug problem. I’m easily taking out big groups of enemies, and rarely do the techs need to come in to patch up my forces.

Even the lowly handlers, who basically suborn enemy drones, are more than capable of handling a few warriors on their own. The arachinds rely on numbers and access routes that cannot be destroyed to take back territory. So, the Eradicators need to remain mostly mobile, only using fortifications to block attack routes and make sure their supplies keep flowing.

Starship Troopers: Terran Command - The Eradicators is developed by The Artistocrats and published by Slitherine Ltd. This downloadable content pack introduces a campaign, alongside new units, both linked to the Eradicators from the name.

Tides of Tomorrow Review (PC)

Road 96 was a game I enjoyed when it was released, and I was curious where the creative minds at Digixart will go with their next game. And now we have it, in the form of Tides of Tomorrow. The game is designed as a narrative adventure, but you get to follow in your friend’s footsteps, see their actions and decide what your own path is. That’s cool, because you rarely have some type of coop where you get to follow other people’s path without having to actually play at the same time with them.

The narrative in Tides of Tomorrow is cool, because you have a great flood which turned the world into a giant ocean. Not a lot of people survived, but those that did live on tiny islands and boats. The islands are occupied by various factions like the Reclaimers, the Marauders, and also the Mystics. It’s a nice starting point, and as you play, you get to unravel a lot more depth and hidden facts or stories related to these factions.

Enter the Chronosphere Preview (PC)

Killing the cows doesn’t make me feel good, even if they are loaded with explosives and determined to take my lone ranger out. I get into a rhythm of shooting where the boss is going to be next turn, then sidestepping, reloading, and shifting to make sure the cows can’t get near.

I have three health packs ready to go, a shotgun in reserve, and I’m only using my big dodge when the situation is really dicey. Because my weapon also moves my character, it makes it easier to ensure bullets do not get near Marcia. Stand-up fights are not my biggest problem. She only has problems when levels feature a ton of indestructible environmental traps, because it’s easy to focus on enemies and take damage from them at the wrong time.

Enter the Chronosphere is developed by Effort Star and published by Joystick Ventures and Gamirror. The title is in Early Access on Steam. The video game combines turn and rhythm-driven combat with a rogue-lite structure.

Clockfall Preview (PC)

At first glance, Clockfall seems to be like any other action roguelite. And then, you soon realize that it has a time-travel mechanic along with a level timer. These things add a great twist to the experience, because you have to strategize and figure out new ways to stay alive, to the best of your capabilities.

You’re dropped into a fractured world, where there’s a destroyed village and a mysterious clock, and you’re trapped in an endless cycle of repetition and death. You are playing through the loops of dungeon runs, and the core idea is quite simple. You have 3 minutes per level, battle enemies, gather resources and try to push deeper with each one of your attempts.

It’s nice to see that unlike other roguelites, this one doesn’t require you to focus on stamina or health. Instead, time is your enemy, because every run is time-limited, so you have to figure out where to go, what to do and how to embrace that experience.

Ink Inside has a very interesting story, because it was meant to be a Nickelodeon cartoon, but it got reborn as a videogame. However, it still has a cartoony visual style, which allows the game to set itself apart. However, the action RPG style and interesting gameplay truly makes it immersive and downright interesting, especially if you’re tired of the same old game formula.

The game takes place inside notebooks that are filled with drawings, all of which were made by Hannah, a little girl. What’s really impressive here is that the drawings came to life and they can easily move in between notebooks without a problem. However, something called The Great Unfolding happened and because of that, travel has become a whole lot more difficult. There’s also a blight called the Sog which affects all the doodles within these notebooks.

As a fan of metroidvania titles, I am always excited to see what comes next, and one of the more surprising additions to the genre in recent months was Mio: Memories in Orbit. This new title is adding a very engaging story, along with a stunning aesthetic, all while offering us some exciting and rewarding experiences that everyone will enjoy.

The first thing that will impress you in Mio: Memories in Orbit is definitely its visuals. The game does a very good job at offering an enchanting, storybook-like world that you explore, and it’s unlike any other game that you will find out there. I appreciate the visual style, and the fact that you can explore many locations like a beautiful garden or an icy metropolis, which add plenty of variety to the gameplay.

The game world never ceased to amaze me, and the same thing is valid when it comes to the enemy design. There’s always some new, interesting enemy to find out, and defeating them requires a bit of strategy and atten...

'83 Preview (PC)

'83 is a game that has been in development for quite some time, and it brings us the 40 v 40 squad-based extravaganza we always wanted. The title offers accessible realism, and it’s designed to be enjoyable for newcomers, but also deep enough to provide depth for experts and people who enjoy squad-based titles.

Right off the bat, the idea here is that we are in an alternate cold war scenario. We have Russia and the US battling each other in a variety of different spots, highlighted with some beautifully designed maps. What I enjoyed about these maps is the tactical depth they offer. You have plenty of spots for flanking, but also open areas where you have to rely on trenches or other ways to get around. For me, it made the game feel very realistic.

The fact that it’s more of a hardcore game means that you don’t have a lot of visual aids which would be offered in a regular FPS. Battles feel grand, and that’s thanks to the large maps, where you can find tanks as well...

Moonsigil Atlas Review (PC)

Dealing a lot of damage at the start of each turn to all enemies is a great way to win fights. But it can only work if the player’s moon can survive when opponents act, which in turn requires a decent selection of cards with the shield rune. I’ve even upgraded a Scathing Storm to give me 4 shield, although I’ve already played it, and it will be some time until it returns from the discard pile.

Unfortunately, even after using a shape to draw another card, I come up short. My stellar monster opponent will deal two times 11 damage, and I only have 8 shield. Losing moon health is not the end of the world, but I can only replenish 25 hitpoints before the boss fight. Thankfully, I win this fight on my next turn, using three classic bolt cards.

I hope that no monster groups are involved in the next fights, because guarding against four opponents is really hard. I also need to get a little lucky with card upgrade opportunities. At master 4, there are still plenty of cards ...

I’ve always been fascinated by public transport and how it works, the vehicles they use and the various systems they entail. And with Bus Bound, the fantasy of being a bus driver comes to life, and in a great manner no doubt. The game offers a good number of licensed buses, and you get to explore a fictional city that comes to life in a way that’s not only interesting, but fun as well.

The game starts off with you sitting on a bus and being called to offer bus services in the city of Emberville. Thankfully, the tutorial is pretty expansive, and it does a good idea of teaching you the ins and outs of using a bus. Not only do you need to build the bus infrastructure in the city, but you also have to drive the bus. It’s a simulator, so don’t expect narrative arcs or cutscenes. You don’t even see your character stepping out of the bus. But the main focus in this game is driving properly, stopping at the bus stations and keeping people happy.

I might have pushed my Captain out a little too far. We’re fighting the Black Legion for control of three victory locations, but we’ll probably wipe them all out to actually win. My Apothecary heals the Captain and gives him an extra health buffer, as he tangles with some Chaos Terminators that arrived without the required backup.

Heavy Intercessors are my line units, and three of them move forward, stomping their feet as they thin out the ranks of some cultists. Legionaries are behind, good targets for my two Dreadnoughts, and a few scouts actually have to move back a few tiles to get the perfect shot on the enemy sorcerer. I will probably lose a squad or two of normal Intercessors, which is manageable, but the fight is as good as won, without any of my units getting a chance to gain a Momentum surge.

We were due to another 007 game, especially since the last one was over a decade ago. And finally, 007 First Light gets released to a lot of hype, from IO Interactive, the studio behind Hitman. And after playing the game, I think they were the perfect fit, because they manage to blend the Hitman, sandbox gameplay DNA with the action tropes that you would expect from James Bond.

What I didn’t expect from 007 First Light is to show us how Bond joins MI6, what leads to that, but also his first mission which ends up a lot harder than expected. Naturally, we are introduced to many characters we know from the 007 lore, from M to Moneypenny, Q, but also a new important character called John Greenway. Although you are meant to despise Greenway at first, he does play a rather important role in the story, and eventually, he’ll grow on you.

Creating a cozy resort in the middle of the mountains might sound fun, but it’s also one of the toughest things you will ever do in a game. Above the Snow clearly enforces that, since it brings the Frostpunk-like survival tension to a rather classic resort tycoon. Not only do you have to manage the resort and keep it going, but you also need to maintain various hikers alive, which can be the tricky part.

The game Above the Snow is all about surviving in a difficult setting, because having a shelter and resort deep in the mountains is not an easy feat. You have to carefully plan every action, but also manage supplies, and do everything you can based on how unpredictable the entire experience is. And that on its own will be incredibly difficult.

Above the Snow manages to combine management systems with various stories about the world. It’s not very difficult to learn what you have to do, since you take over a mountain lodge that was abandoned. Then, you fix it up and...

I will probably lose it this turn, so I choose not to use my command points to boost its speed and evasion. The ship is strong but cannot use a shield, which is proving to be a liability.

I recharge the shields of my other two frontline fighters and start the turn. They wisely attack the same enemy, and it blows up nicely. My two support units put two missiles in play and shot down an enemy one. The enemy eliminates my flagship but fails to do any other hull damage. I still have two tactics points to use next turn, and as long as I can keep shields active, I will win this battle.

It’s always a good idea to get more recon. I like to play as an American general who has access to an auxiliary force, and a third is always dedicated to the recce assets that are vital when it comes to finding enemies and understanding their tactical capabilities.

I know the Germans have a Tiger on the field, but I have a decent infantry line that can absorb some losses. And my Long Tom and airpower can make the heavy tank less effective, even if I lack a tank destroyer that can quickly eliminate it. I plan to take out the other Axis units first, reinforce if needed, and only then push to destroy the Tiger and take the final hex I need for my main objective.

As someone who platinumed Returnal and was looking forward to Saros on PC, I was very excited to hear that an indie dev is entering this bullet hell shooter genre. Their game is called Luna Abyss, and it’s exactly what you would expect, a fun blend of story, shooting and chaos, all combined in a 5–7-hour adventure that doesn’t overstay its welcome.

One of the first things that you immediately see in Luna Abyss is how weird and also interesting the world is. The level design is very creative, even if the budget clearly limits what they could do in a lot of cases. The main character, an android called Fawkes, is very powerful, but you will clearly be matched with enemies that match your powers most of the time.

That’s why I felt Luna Abyss is very fair when it comes to combat. Yes, you have some enemies that will require some strategy when it comes to attacking and killing, but it all feels fair and very rewarding once you bring down those large enemies and bosses. E...

Or when a missile salvo manages to sink two American destroyers in two minutes, giving the Soviets an edge in the Med. But chaos soon intervenes, and the situation reverses.

The Japanese could win on the defensive late in World War II. The Bismarck can be quickly sunk or take down two Allied battleships before slipping away. Chance plays a big role, but good planning and careful execution on the part of the player commander will push for the desired result.

I should have spent less of my precious gold on wheel of fortune spins. I managed to ace the first week in charge of this haunted antique shop by filling customer inventories with a mix of alchemical and junk items, while getting plenty of help from my carefully chosen Tarot cards. I have one Reverse spell in my hand.

That one will wait in hand until I find the perfect Tarot effect to use it on. For the moment, I’m trying to get through days fast, because I need the extra gold offered for working with as few customers as possible. Having a lot of gold means I can reveal more Tarot cards in the shop that pops up at the day's end. A wider selection and a bit of luck will make it easier to hit on a combination of powers that can rack up huge sales quickly.

It’s always nice when a game clearly labels the closets, in this case locked doors, from which enemies will start flooding an area. It makes it easier to start a big fight by throwing some TNT in that direction, thrusting that it will take out two enemies, one melee and one ranged, before anything else happens. A dash and a turn then allow me to cover another entry point as I backpedal.

The shotgun, although a little low on ammo, is the best way to kill up close. When shielded enemies come in, I let them close while I headshot a sniper who managed to take off some of my mouse armor. Then I shift focus to the remaining foes, move behind a crate to reload, and then execute them using the shotgun again. There are some crates nearby that will probably hold some ammo.

Deadhaus Sonata is a vampire game that has been in development for many years now, and it’s finally in our hands, albeit in early access. While I generally like playing any vampire game that I get my hands on, Deadhaus Sonata is different because it’s directed by Denis Dyack, the creative mind behind Blood Omen and Eternal Darkness. Having someone connected to the beloved Legacy of Kain games brings a lot of expectations, so how does the game fare?

Right off the bat, you will notice that despite being an indie game, the title does have an impressive scope. The game world is large, albeit formulaic and linear at times. There are various enemies coming in, and you are slowly learning all kinds of new skills. You get accustomed to the attack system, figure out how to jump and use various skillsets, and even deal with bosses you find along the way.

Sandbox games are always exciting to play, because aside from a few guidelines, you are free to do whatever you want. That premise is very exciting for a lot of people. Whether it’s Mount & Blade or Kenshi, there are all kinds of titles in this genre, but Valorborn is different since it adds a great medieval theme and an already beautiful, exciting world for you to explore.

Unlike a story-driven RPG, Valorborn is different mainly because it pushes you towards making your own storylines. You can go ahead and rob NPCs, you can scavenge, hunt, mine for various minerals, etc. The upside is that you can explore every cave, road, building and so on. But since this is early access, there can be some issues, like getting stuck inside walls or the camera plummeting via cliffs. Saving often is important here, because some of the issues can be game-breaking.

Ever since I played the first MOBA titles in the early 2000s, I became obsessed with the immersive gameplay, but also the excellent replay value. These days though, we have only the major MOBA kings and few other titles coming here and there, trying to innovate. EverSiege: Untold Ages enters with an entirely new perspective, and a great blend of MOBA-like gameplay, roguelite progression, but also base management and hero-led combat.

The core gameplay in EverSiege: Untold Ages is impressive and easy to understand. Every journey starts with you getting dropped into a generated world which is under attack by the Evil Master. So, what is your role here? You need to survive enemy waves, while also reclaiming territory, advancing into enemy strongholds and rebuilding the bastion’s infrastructure.

What this means is that you can’t always attack, you have to carefully push the enemy but also pull back when necessary. For example, you need to power up your base, which means...

When KIBORG: Descent was announced, I was pumped to see even more content for the game, as the original was quite promising. Descent isn’t reinventing the wheel however, it’s more of a refinement to the original, as it adds 3 new environments, all of which I found to be interesting and cleverly done.

Visually, the new locations are stunning, and the game certainly didn’t shy away from testing the limits of the engine. The new different enemy types are cool, certainly very creative, and the 3 new bosses are in line with the KIBORG lore. Speaking of bosses, they are the highlight of this expansion, because not only are they very intense, but they also require quite a bit of planning and thinking. That’s especially true for the last one, where you really have to test your skills in order to beat him.

It’s weird how close supposedly ranged units have to get to their enemies to attack. It would be nice to engulf that enemy healer in a pillar of fire, but it means I have to get my vulnerable caster a little too close for comfort to enemy units. I weaken them by throwing a grenade and regret my decision not to spend essence on giving my squad the ability to use items two times a turn.

Her fireballs weaken two enemies, and I move my heavy hitters into position to finish them off. I nail the simple rhythm sequence for the first, eliminating one alpha dog. But I miss one mouse button press on my second, and I can only hope that the enemy will not do too much damage once it acts.

Wardrum is developed by Mopeful Games and published by Team17. I played on the PC using Steam, with the title not launched on any other hardware. The video game mixes rhythm mechanics, turn-based tactics, and a rogue-lite structure.

Dead as Disco Preview (PC)

Beat’em’up games are always fun and intense, and I’m always excited to hear about new entries to the genre. With that in mind, Dead as Disco tries to make them even more fun by making you sync to the tunes you’re listening to. And while the game is in early access for the time being, it already managed to create a large, cult following. Why? Because the gameplay is one of the best in this niche already, despite the content being very limited.

Dead as Disco’s story is interesting, because our main character was dead, but he rose from the grave and he has to rely on what Vice, a skull like a disco ball, has to say. Of course, this is just the setup, because what matters the most is beating people up, and that’s where Dead as Disco excels. The game is incredibly fun here, because the moment-to-moment combat is very satisfying, and the attack animations are nothing short of impressive.

Invincible VS Review (PC)

Ever since Amazon made the Invincible series, I’ve been extremely interested in the idea of having a fighting game based on the show. Thinking about it, the premise lends itself to some really good fights, and there are lots of characters within the lore to make up for a great roster. And here we are. Invincible VS is finally launched, and this game is actually a lot more interesting than I originally expected.

Invincible VS is a 3 v 3 team fighter, and it has a 2-way combo system. When you are landing a combo, you are entering a conversation, not just executing a sequence. The defender is reading your patterns, he is finding ways to break free, and he will do his best to turn your momentum when possible. It’s a great dynamic because every combo is risky. If you hold back, you lose pressure and if you push too far, you are predictable and the opponent will take advantage of you.

Solar Expanse - Space Exploration Manager Preview (PC)

I’ve always enjoyed the idea of exploring the Solar System, its planets and conquering places that no one ever visited before. And with Solar Expanse, you can easily do that. The game allows you to enter a space race where you’re competing with other corporations in order to mine asteroids, colonize other planets and terraform.

It’s all a sandbox, so the focus is on trying to colonize the system and prevent losing. And there are plenty of loss conditions. You can run out of money, for starters. Or you don’t tackle the asteroid heading towards Earth. But the true appeal of the game is certainly the experience, the ability to immerse yourself in a sandbox and customize stuff as you go along.

For newcomers, Solar Expanse’s menus can feel rather overwhelming, but in a good way. A lot of the gameplay relies on planning and then executing spaceship missions.
Elemental: Reforged Review (PC)

I should have claimed ground at a faster pace. I focused on growth and economic research, while placing outposts that made New Pariden the fastest growing city in the world. I also pumped out enough units to fill out two armies led by capable heroes, Garrett and Ilyra Fen, while four scouts discovered the mysteries of the world.

I found three spots that would be great for new cities. But by the time I cleared out the monsters and founded Raven’s Heart, Capitar and Ruvenna got the other two locations locked down. And then I lost one big army and injured my leader in a quest battle. Producing fresh troops will not take long, but I need to decide whether I want to go to war for those prime city spots or if I should focus on the core of my kingdom.

Elemental: Reforged is developed and published by Stardock Entertainment. I played on the PC, the only hardware platform on which the title is available, using Steam. The video game combines and updates previous releases in...
