Brooklyn’s Trinidad and Tobago Independence Day parade, planned for this Sunday, has been abruptly halted after the NYPD denied the event permit just days before the celebration. For many in the diaspora, especially Trinidadians who were preparing outfits, flags, and family plans, the news landed like a cold splash of water.

The parade was set to begin at Church and Flatbush Avenues to honor 64 years of independence. But according to documents obtained by PIX11, the NYPD argued that the proposed route would “substantially and unreasonably interfere with traffic” and strain police resources needed for emergency coverage in the surrounding area. The denial was issued on August 20, leaving organizers little time to adjust.

One has to wonder whether the parade route was consulted with the NYPD before the planned route was submitted. This is crucial, and both the celebration organizers and NYPD need to resolve this issue.

Today the Nailah Blackman camp might be a little vex with Sokah2Soca, but I have to call it as I hear it. This issue has been my long‑standing pet peeve with this talented artist out of Trinidad and Tobago. Her marketing team does an excellent job — no question there — but when I listen to a song for the first time, clarity matters.

With “Bless Me,” I genuinely struggled. I couldn’t understand the lyrics and had to use AI just to figure out what the song was about. Some say her delivery is intentional, but I remember her earlier work where every word was clean and easy to follow. These newer releases feel harder to decipher, almost like the meaning gets buried under the nasal tone.

AI suggests the song focuses on success, financial abundance, and the repeated mantra “bless me” as a call for prosperity. If you picked all of that up on first listen, you’re doing better than me.

“Blakie said it was ah bacchanal, and yes, Breds… it was ah real bacchanal to get inside, oui!” Grenada Day US brought pure Spice Isle energy to Brooklyn today, filling the South Shore High School field with the unmistakable vibes of Grenada, Carriacou, and Petite Martinique. As Labor Day Carnival season builds momentum across New York City, this annual celebration once again proved why the tri‑island diaspora remains one of the most vibrant cultural forces in the Caribbean community.

But before the festivities could begin, many patrons faced major challenges getting inside. Extremely long lines wrapped around the venue, leaving people waiting for extended periods just to enter the space. The crowd was massive, and the demand to get in showed just how deeply Grenadians in New York value this cultural homecoming. Even with the delays from the entry metal detectors, spirits stayed high—flags waving, people laughing, and everyone determined to be part of the celebration. Honestly, I wouldn't have waited in that line to get into the event. 'Liming' outside would have been the more viable alternative... that line was far too long for my liking!

Once inside, the field was filled with live performances, drumming, dance, DJs, and nonstop Grenadian pride. Families, friends, and cultural groups gathered under the summer sun to celebrate heritage, unity, and the traditions that continue to thrive far from home. The aroma of Oil Down, callaloo, roti, and other Grenadian favorites drifted through the air as vendors served up authentic flavors of the Spice Isle.

Grenada Day is more than a festival — it’s a reunion. Parish groups, cultural organizations, and long‑time New York residents came together to share memories, represent their roots, and pass traditions on to the next generation. The event, organized by the Grenada Cultural Festival Group, remains a cornerstone of Caribbean summer celebrations in Brooklyn.

For those who couldn’t attend in person — or who got stuck in the long lines outside — the experience was streamed live on YouTube by “I Am Living My Life,” capturing the performances, the crowd energy, and the unmistakable Grenadian pride that defines this day every year.

As Labor Day Carnival season heats up in New York City, the celebrations are already rolling—and today, Brooklyn hosts one of the diaspora’s most beloved gatherings: Cedros Day 2026 at Canarsie Park.

Cedros Day brings together people from Cedros, Trinidad & Tobago, now living across New York and the wider Caribbean diaspora, for a full day of community, culture, music, food, memories, and pure good vibes. It’s a homecoming away from home — a space where we keep traditions alive, share stories, and let Cedros pride shine bright.

The event is produced by One Cedros Crew – Never Two, a team dedicated to preserving and celebrating Cedros heritage wherever Trinbagonians gather. And for those who can’t make it in person, vlogger “I Am Living My Life” streams the entire celebration live on YouTube.

This year’s Cedros Day comes with a special highlight:

As August comes to a close and the temperature begins to retreat, Canada is sending Soca heat for carnivals in 2027. Yes, today we are celebrating with new Soca, and this one comes from the artist known as Bori. If you love groove soca, then this could become one of your club favorites.

Soca’s global reach continues to grow, with new voices emerging across the diaspora. For Carnival 2027, Montréal-based artist Bori enters the conversation with “Holding On,” a smooth-groove soca release that reflects both Caribbean roots and Canada’s growing contribution to the genre.

He is a Montréal soca voice known for work across music, theater, spoken word, and performance art; Edgar Bori brings a distinct creative background to soca. On “Holding On,” he blends his artistic identity with the emotion, rhythm, and warmth that define groove soca.

The musical identity is important, and we must mention the production work. Produced by Richard Gosine and mixed and mastered by Golden Era Productions, “Holding On” delivers a clean, easy-moving sound built for DJs, fêtes, and late-night lime sessions. Written by Bori and Emmanmuel Rudder, the song centers on persistence, connection, and holding firm to what matters.

Had it not been for the Cocoa Panyols, Trinidad & Tobago would not have the vibrant fusion styles of Soca Parang and Parang Soca—two distinct forms of Christmas music born from the introduction of la parranda traditions brought over from Venezuela. These early Venezuelan migrants carried with them songs of celebration and devotion, which blended seamlessly with Trinidad’s evolving musical identity. Their influence created a foundation that continues to shape the island’s festive soundscape.

Every September, as Trinidad & Tobago enters the parang season, the nation reconnects with one of its most cherished cultural traditions. Yet this year — and in recent years — the music carries a new layer of complexity. Trinidad has seen a significant influx of Venezuelan migrants, and while many Trinidadians do not favor this sudden wave of arrivals, what often goes unnoticed is the cultural impact these newcomers bring, especially in the realm of music. Currently, the country may not fully appreciate how deeply these immigrants will enrich parang’s linguistic authenticity, musical integrity, and cultural evolution.

Parang has always been a living bridge between Trinidad and Venezuela, shaped by centuries of migration, memory, and shared heritage. Today, with tens of thousands of Venezuelans seeking refuge, Parang is experiencing a new wave of refinement and rebirth—one that strengthens the very roots of the genre.

Spanish Roots and Early Arrival in Trinidad

Parang’s story begins long before modern Trinidadians strummed cuatros or sang Rio Manzanares. According to research from the Smithsonian Center for Folklife & Cultural Heritage, when Spain surrendered Trinidad to the British in 1797, Spanish language and customs slowly faded from public life. Yet the cocoa panyols—descendants of Venezuelan migrants who worked the cocoa estates—preserved their traditions through parranda navideña, house‑to‑house Christmas serenades sung in Spanish.

These serenades blended sacred and secular themes. Songs like Rio Manzanares and Angelo carried Venezuelan imagery and romance into Trinidadian homes, quietly embedding Venezuelan culture in Trinidad’s rural communities. Over time, these serenades evolved into the musical genre we now call parang.

Decline and Lack of Early Interest

By the mid-20th century, parang was losing its visibility. A 1964 newspaper described it as an “old custom” fading away—a moment documented in the Smithsonian article. Younger Trinidadians were gravitating toward calypso and emerging popular genres, while Spanish lyrics felt distant to many who no longer spoke the language.

This moment of decline marked a shift. Parranderos Lordrick Espinosa and Paul Castillo recognized the danger of losing the tradition entirely. They approached Leo De Leon of AM 610 and launched a campaign to revive parang, bringing it back into national consciousness through radio, competitions, and community performances.

Revival and Institutional Growth

The revival worked. Over the coming decades, parang became a central part of Trinidad’s Christmas identity. Schools began teaching Spanish, competitions flourished, and the National Parang Association — headquartered in Arima — established National Parang History Month every September.

Parang also diversified. Trinidadians fused parang with calypso to create parang soca, and later chutney parang, blending Bhojpuri and English lyrics with traditional instruments. Parang escaped the confines of Christmas and entered weddings, Easter celebrations, and heritage festivals. It became a symbol of goodwill, sharing, and community—values that transcended language.

The New Venezuelan Wave: A Cultural Rebirth

In the past five years, Trinidad & Tobago has become a refuge to approximately 50,000 Venezuelans fleeing civil unrest. While their arrival has sparked social debate, their cultural impact — especially on parang — is undeniable.

This new wave of Venezuelan migrants brings linguistic authenticity, musical precision, and renewed cultural energy to the parang ecosystem. Their presence strengthens the genre in several ways:

Restoring Spanish pronunciation and fluency: Many Trinidadians sing parang phonetically, too. Venezuelan newcomers bring native Spanish articulation, improving lyrical accuracy and deepening audience appreciation.
Reinforcing traditional instrumentation and vocal styles: Cuatro techniques, vocal phrasing, and rhythmic patterns gain new depth through musicians trained in Venezuelan parranda traditions.
Expanding the parang workforce: More Venezuelan musicians mean more bands, more competitions, and more community events—revitalizing the parang season.
Strengthening cultural identity: Parang becomes a shared Caribbean‑Latin space, where Trinidadians and Venezuelans celebrate community, family, and heritage together.

However, this event is not the first Venezuelan influence on parang music. Earlier migrants like Sylvestre Mata (who arrived in 1916) shaped Parang's early development and won national competitions—another detail highlighted in the Smithsonian Folklife article. Today’s migrants continue that legacy, adding fresh talent and cultural authenticity.

Artists like Irvys Juarez — who migrated 22 years ago, joined parang bands, became the PRO of the National Parang Association, and launched a solo career — embody this new era. Their contributions show that parang is not merely surviving; it is evolving.

Conclusion.

Parang in Trinidad & Tobago has always been a story of migration, memory, and music. From cocoa panyols preserving Spanish traditions, to mid‑century revivalists saving the genre from decline, to today’s Venezuelan arrivals enriching its linguistic and musical integrity—parang continues to grow through cultural exchange.

As Trinidad enters another parang season, the music carries a deeper meaning. It reflects centuries of connection between two shores, a shared heritage strengthened by new voices. The Venezuelan presence in Trinidad is not an interruption; it is a continuation—a reaffirmation of parang’s roots and a catalyst for its future.

Parang is no longer just Christmas music. It is a living testament to goodwill, community, and the enduring bond between Trinidad and Venezuela. And in this new era, Parang's rebirth is not only musical—it is cultural, linguistic, and profoundly human.

🇹🇹 Trinidad & Tobago — The Foundation

Trinidad is the birthplace of Soca, a combination of Calypso and East Indian rhythms created by Lord Shorty (Ras Shorty I) in the 1970s. When interviewed, he stated that the new music is 'the soul of calypso,' not 'Soul Calypso!'
