What if we were in the shoes of one of our favorite YouTubers, "I am living my life" and we were reporting on Carnival in Jamaica? No video, just a report! Well, we decided to do the written part, and we do hope you enjoy this report. It's carnival time in Jamaica once again, and the reggae/dancehall spirit shares this moment with their Soca counterparts.

We are reporting live from the 876/658, and the energy in Kingston is truly electric. It's time for Soca music, and yes, the Soca artists are already streaming into the island to light up the festivities. If you aren’t on the island yet, you’re missing the heartbeat of the Caribbean. The sun is blazing at a perfect 30°C, the Red Stripe is cold, and the sound of soca is vibrating through the streets of New Kingston.

The festival takes place from April 8th to April 14th. With the road parade on April 12, the island becomes a Soca bacchanal paradise.

We are officially in the thick of the 2026 Jamaica Carnival season, and "Xaymaca," the "Land of Wood and Water," has transformed into the "Land of Paint and Powder."

What’s Happening Right Now "The Big Week" kicked off on April 8th, and we’ve already seen the Xodus Fete Gala and Illuminate set the bar sky-high. Tonight, the city doesn’t sleep. We are gearing up for the legendary Bacchanal J’ouvert and YardMas J'ouvert. Expect pure, unadulterated chaos—the good kind! Saint Lucia Carnival 2026 is already gaining momentum, and Extreme Band has joined the fray with their latest release, "Throw Them Down."

After giving this track a few listens, I didn’t connect with it in a strong or positive way. The groove has a catchy pull, but it settles into a monotone pocket that didn’t quite lift the energy for me. It feels like a tune that might resonate more with rum-drinkers liming (hanging out) in a corner than with revelers looking for a power boost on the road.

That said, the vibe could land nicely in a Jouvert morning setting—mud, paint, powder, and a looser, early-morning rhythm where repetition becomes part of the trance. Every song has its own unique space, and this one may find its audience there.

Of course, music is subjective, and Extreme Band has a loyal fan base that may hear something different. Your perspective matters.

But when you trace the rhythms, the phrasing, the storytelling, and the cultural purpose behind both genres, a clearer picture emerges: soca is not a replacement for calypso—it is calypso's evolution.

Calypso established the groundwork through its wit, social commentary, melodic structure, and response traditions. As the world changed and Carnival demanded a more dance-driven sound, the music adapted. Artists began experimenting with new rhythms, new instruments, and new production styles, birthing a modern expression of the same cultural heartbeat.

What we now call soca is simply calypso updated for a new generation—faster, brighter, more rhythmic, but still carrying the DNA of the art form that came before it. From Lord Shorty’s early experiments to the global rise of Groovy and Power Soca, the lineage is unmistakable.

This discussion isn’t about choosing sides.

It’s about understanding the continuum—how Calypso’s spirit lives inside Soca and how Soca keeps Calypso’s legacy alive on the road, on the stage, and across the diaspora.

Kes Serving Vibes: The Road Mix That Coulda, Shoulda, Woulda—Carnival 2026

Trinidad’s Carnival rolled in with one of those short seasons for 2026, and, as expected, many of the big road songs dropped late. Still, a few well‑known artists managed to dominate the airwaves. With strong promotion and the right radio connections, their tracks quickly became the go-to favorites for Road March. As the band parade drew near, three songs stood out prominently: “Encore,” “Cyar Behave Mehself,” and "Still a Road Man.” And when the results were announced, those same three locked down the top spots.

So why are we here today? Simple. We want to highlight a road mix you may have completely missed—mainly because radio stations didn’t give it the love it deserved. The song in question, “Rum and Coca Cola” by Kes, was never considered a road march contender by some because it falls squarely into the groove soca lane. The argument goes, "Groove can’t win Road March. A road mix won’t change that.” But is that really true?

One would think that a true road song should be sweet, infectious, and capable of capturing the imagination of masqueraders. That should be the formula. Regardless of BPM, the vibe and the energy a song brings to the road should matter more than speed or the traditional “Power Soca energy.” That’s exactly why we believe Voice’s “Cyar Behave Mehself” is the real Road March of Trinidad Carnival 2026. And of course, we congratulate Machel Montano’s “Encore” for securing the official Stage March title.

Now, back to regular programming. Kes’ “Rum and Coca-Cola" may not have reached the popularity of “Cyar Behave,” but it absolutely deserves an honorable mention. We’re featuring it here because many of you may have missed the Road Mix entirely. Take a listen and appreciate the vibe, the creativity, and the production brilliance behind it. The mix was crafted by D Ninja and Madness MUV Productions.
