Trinidad’s Carnival rolled in with one of those short seasons for 2026, and, as expected, many of the big road songs dropped late. Still, a few well‑known artists managed to dominate the airwaves. With strong promotion and the right radio connections, their tracks quickly became the go-to favorites for Road March. As the band parade drew near, three songs stood out prominently: “Encore,” “Cyar Behave Mehself,” and "Still a Road Man.” And when the results were announced, those same three locked down the top spots.

So why are we here today? Simple. We want to highlight a road mix you may have completely missed—mainly because radio stations didn’t give it the love it deserved. The song in question, “Rum and Coca Cola” by Kes, was never considered a road march contender by some because it falls squarely into the groove soca lane. The argument goes, "Groove can’t win Road March. A road mix won’t change that.” But is that really true?

One would think that a true road song should be sweet, infectious, and capable of capturing the imagination of masqueraders. That should be the formula. Regardless of BPM, the vibe and the energy a song brings to the road should matter more than speed or the traditional “Power Soca energy.” That’s exactly why we believe Voice’s “Cyar Behave Mehself” is the real Road March of Trinidad Carnival 2026. And of course, we congratulate Machel Montano’s “Encore” for securing the official Stage March title.

Now, back to regular programming. Kes’ “Rum and Coca-Cola" may not have reached the popularity of “Cyar Behave,” but it absolutely deserves an honorable mention. We’re featuring it here because many of you may have missed the Road Mix entirely. Take a listen and appreciate the vibe, the creativity, and the production brilliance behind it. It's that time, my friends—the season when Jab Soca takes center stage. From now until September, before the new wave of Carnival 2027 releases hit YouTube, we shift into a different frame of mind. This season is not the realm of finesse or groove‑driven sweetness. This is the world of the Jab masquerader—a mindset forged in heat, ritual, rebellion, and blackened oil.

Today, we open the gates with one of the most iconic voices from the Spice Isle: Talpree, delivering his Spicemas and SVG anthem, “Take Jab.”

This track carries everything that defines the Jab tradition—the tension, the anticipation, and the electricity of a nation preparing to paint the streets black. Written by Talpree himself, the song reflects decades of mastery and a catalog of Jab Soca classics that few can rival.

Carnival 2026 Splits the Glory — Voice Takes the Road, Machel Takes the Stage

Sometimes it’s best not to swim against the tide—and in this case, it’s the musical tide that washed over Trinidad and Tobago for Carnival 2026. But not today; we are continuing to lament our case for this iteration of Road March Bacchanal. We are calling balls and strikes for this post. Now, let’s say it plainly, because we’re not letting this one slip away like the "Savannah Grass" vs. "Famalay" saga. Voice took the Road March, and Machel Montano claimed the Stage March. We said it, and who vex… well, allyuh know the rest.

Even Machel Montano himself acknowledged the reality. On Corie Sheppard’s podcast, he admitted that "Cyar Behave" wasn’t built to win because too many artists misunderstand the energy of the stage—a point that matters for "Stage March," not the "Road March." Road March has always belonged to the road, the heartbeat of Carnival, not the performance platform aka "The Stage."

And Machel doubled down in an Instagram post, stating outright that his song was not the most played on the road. The key line says everything:

“The Road March is the song that is played the most times to cross the stage.

It is misconstrued that the Road March is the biggest song for the Carnival on the road.

My song was not played the most on the road.

Maybe, a next prize for the song played the most on the road.”

That’s the man himself clarifying the difference—and it’s the same difference we’ve been shouting for years. Trinbago’s Carnival Lagniappe is in full swing at the Queen’s Park Savannah in Port of Spain (De Savannah), but once again there seems to be no official online stream for the public to enjoy.

Local videographers are doing their best with independent feeds, but neither TTT nor WACK Visual Radio is broadcasting the show. For an event that celebrates the very best of Carnival 2026—champions, icons, and the full brilliance of our culture—this silence from the official channels is disappointing.

This is the final grand showcase of the season, a moment where the country’s top performers come together to remind us why Trinidad and Tobago remains the cultural heartbeat of the Caribbean. It’s a gift, a spectacle, a national treasure.

And yet… this is how we want the world to experience our culture?

One would think that those in charge—government included—would be eager to share this talent with global audiences. Broadcasting this event could inspire future visitors, strengthen cultural pride, and give the world a taste of what makes our Carnival unmatched.

Yes, I’m disappointed. Many of us are.

But we will still highlight what we can. Today, we’re watching from the sidelines, thanks to one of the hardworking videographers who refuse to let the culture go unseen.

Kaiso Dial will continue to amplify what’s available—because the culture must go on, even when the official channels fall short.

Setting the Record Straight: WACK Radio Didn’t Mute Helon — So Who Did?

Unraveling the Misquote That Sparked a Storm!

A wave of online outrage is being fueled by a TNN News report circulating on YouTube. In the clip, TNN claims the "Chairman of NAPA" said: “We muted Helon’s mic on TTT — Dimanche Gras bachannal!” YouTube

The controversy surrounding Helon Francis’ 2025 Calypso Monarch performance did not begin with his lyrics, his delivery, or even the competition itself. It began with silence—the sudden, jarring silence that fell over TTT’s broadcast just as Helon stepped forward to defend his crown. For viewers across Trinidad and the diaspora, the audio blackout felt suspicious, even deliberate. In a cultural space where calypso has long been a vehicle for truth‑telling, any interruption is bound to raise eyebrows.

Fortunately, WACK Radio 90.1FM carried the full performance without interruption, preserving the moment for those who refused to miss it. Yet even as WACK filled the gap left by TTT, a new problem emerged—one not of technical failure, but of misrepresentation.

During the live broadcast, an unscripted exchange occurred between DJ Aaron and WACK’s CEO, Mr. Kenny Phillips. It was brief, unpolished, and very clearly taken out of context. A clipped version of that moment was circulated online, and from that fragment, an entire false narrative was constructed. What should have been a simple clarification became the spark for accusations, confusion, and reputational damage.

At the center of the controversy is a single word: “They.”

Anyone who listens to the full audio will hear Mr. Phillips say, “They muted."

Not “We muted."

Not “I muted."

Not anything that suggests WACK Radio had a hand in silencing Helon Francis.

Yet TNN reported something entirely different. Their article claimed that the “NAPA Chairman”—a title inaccurately applied to Mr. Phillips in this context—told a commenter that Helon’s mic was muted on TTT. The implication was clear: that he was admitting responsibility or at least confirming insider knowledge of censorship. But the recording does not support that interpretation. It contradicts it.

This raises an important question: How did “They muted” become “We muted"?

Was it a careless mistake? A rushed assumption? Or something more pointed?

The decision to label Mr. Phillips as the “NAPA Chairman” only deepens the confusion. On that night, he was present as the CEO of WACK Radio, overseeing their livestream—not acting in any NAPA capacity. If TNN genuinely believed he had confessed to muting the audio, why not identify him by the role he was actually performing? Why invoke NAPA at all?

The framing feels deliberate, and the consequences were immediate.

TTT, for its part, never accused WACK Radio of wrongdoing. They described their broadcast failure as a technical issue—and while the public still awaits a more detailed explanation, nothing from TTT suggests WACK was involved. Yet WACK became collateral damage in the fallout. Their livestream was abruptly cut. Access to their YouTube and Facebook feeds disappeared. The timing was too sharp, too coincidental, to ignore.

Something is not adding up.

What is clear, however, is that TNN’s reporting contributed to a narrative built on a misquote. And when media outlets misrepresent facts—especially in a cultural space as emotionally charged and historically significant as calypso—the impact is real. Reputations are damaged. Trust erodes. Communities fracture.

At minimum, TNN owes WACK Radio and Mr. Phillips a correction. Ideally, an apology. Yet the misleading video and text remain online, untouched, unamended, and unacknowledged.

The story is still unfolding, and more clarity will come. But for now, one truth stands firm: Words matter. Accuracy matters. And when the media gets it wrong, accountability matters even more.

"When ah Trini get-vex, he does want to buss somebody's head"—and that is exactly how I felt when the Road March results for Trinidad Carnival 2026 were announced. Not because my favorite song lost, but because the system once again exposed its flaws. The most popular song did not win; the song most strategically played at predetermined judging points did. That distinction is not trivial—it is the heart of the problem.

For years, the Road March has been governed by a format that is outdated, easily manipulated, and increasingly mistrusted. Many Trinidadians believe that this year’s outcome reflects those vulnerabilities. And just like the Savannah Grass year, the people’s choice was sidelined—not because of artistry or cultural impact, but because of a system TUCO refuses to modernize.

Let me be clear: I do not blame Machel Montano for operating within the rules. He is a master strategist, supported by elite writers and producers, and he understands how to ignite hype that burns bright even if it never becomes classic. He is a Carnival Soca salesman—once he smells blood, “yuh dogs-dead!” But his twelve wins, impressive as they are, do not carry the cultural weight of Lord Kitchener’s legacy. Kitchener’s victories were earned in an era of steelbands, brass bands, and genuine public demand. Machel’s wins are engineered within a system that rewards influence, access, and timing.

This is not an attack on an artist. It is a critique of an institution.

TUCO’s Assistant PRO, Megulla Simon, recently insisted that TUCO deserves respect. But respect is earned, and TUCO’s lack of urgency to fix a malfunctioning competition has eroded public confidence. Their approach feels indifferent at best and incompetent at worst.

The clearest example of this failure is the widening gap between the people’s choice and the DJ’s playlist. Masqueraders were calling for Cyar Behave all day; entire sections were singing it, yet at the judging points the music switched to Encore. That is not organic. That is not reflective of public sentiment. That is the result of DJs and band coordinators following predetermined lists rather than responding to the crowd. And when the judging points are known in advance, the opportunity for manipulation becomes obvious.

Announcing judging points is a fundamental error. It allows artists to lobby, DJs to adjust playlists, and bands to coordinate plays for maximum impact. This is not the spirit of Road March. This is stagecraft masquerading as road culture.

If the Road March is truly about the road, then the system must reflect that. No more judging at the Queen’s Park Oval, Soca Drome, or other predictable locations with stands and seated patrons. These are stages, not the road. Instead, TUCO should adopt a modern, fair, and transparent approach that captures what masqueraders are actually hearing and responding to.

A reformed system is not only possible—it is necessary. And the solutions are neither complicated nor unrealistic.

Key Reforms TUCO Must Implement

Randomize judging points or eliminate fixed points entirely to prevent strategic manipulation.
Use audio fingerprinting technology (similar to Shazam) to automatically detect and count songs along the parade route.
Deploy neutral monitors within bands to record plays discreetly and consistently.
Ban payments or sponsorships that influence DJs or bands to favor specific Road March–eligible songs.
Require transparency through published logs, timestamps, and band-by-band breakdowns.
Introduce a “People’s Road Choice” Award to capture public sentiment through verified voting, streaming data, and social media engagement.
Just like politics, there’s no campaigning on Carnival days—no artists hopping from band to band or truck to truck trying to influence plays.

These reforms would restore fairness, eliminate speculation, and ensure that the Road March reflects the true spirit of Carnival—freedom, authenticity, and celebration.

The legacy conversation matters here as well. Machel’s twelve wins are historic, but they are not equivalent to Kitchener’s eleven. Kitchener won because the people demanded his music. Machel wins because he understands how to work a system that TUCO refuses to update. Even he admitted on Corie Sheppard’s podcast that Cyar Behave couldn’t win because artists don’t understand the “energy of the stage.” But Road March is not supposed to be about the stage. It is about the road—the heartbeat of Carnival.

If TUCO continues to cling to a broken system, public trust will continue to erode. And once trust is gone, the cultural integrity of the Road March will go with it. TUCO already faces criticism for Calypso Fiesta and Calypso Monarch selections—that is a separate conversation, but it underscores a pattern of non-transparency and resistance to change.

Reforming the Road March is not an attack on tradition. It is a defense of it. By embracing modern technology and transparent practices, TUCO can protect the legacy of the competition, support artists equitably, and honor the will of the people who make Carnival what it is.

Addendum: 02/20/2026

I was right years ago when I said Machel won the Stage March, not the Road March—and it still holds true today. So consider this a bit of breaking news. Machel himself has now confirmed it.

In an Instagram post, he openly stated that his song was not the most played on the road. The key part of his message says it all:

“The Road March is the song that is played the most times to cross the stage.

It is misconstrued that the Road March is the biggest song for the Carnival on the road.

My song was not played the most on the road.

Maybe, a next prize for the song played the most on the road.”

When the artist with twelve titles is telling you the system is misunderstood—and that his own song wasn’t the dominant road tune—it validates everything we’ve been saying for years.

But it was the talent of the calypsonians that rose above it all.

Sermons delivered as songs washed over the Grand Stand of the Queen’s Park Savannah at Trinbago’s Dimanche Gras, reclaiming center stage for Carnival 2026. Calypso didn’t just survive—it soared.

Tonight, we gathered to witness the crowning of the Caribbean’s Calypso Queen of Queens—now the Calypso Monarch of Trinidad and Tobago.

Terri Lyons came, saw, and conquered.

With a voice wrapped in prayer and power, she lifted the spirit of the nation and reminded us of calypso’s sacred roots. One Point Decides It! Exodus Repeats as Champions for Panorama 2026

Wow—what a finish. The point differences tonight were nothing short of astonishing, and for the first time in years, not a single tie appeared on the score sheets. Band after band was separated by just one point, keeping the entire Savannah on edge until the very last moment.

Tonight, we witnessed the full power of steelband music—precision, passion, and pure Trinbago brilliance. From the first roll to the final cadenza, each orchestra brought its own heartbeat to the stage, shaping a night that will live long in the memory of every pan lover.

The first two bands were electric, with Massy Trinidad All Stars receiving a standing ovation and extended applause. Renegades brought the big sound to the stage, and Exodus did not disappoint. Then again, Nutrien Silver Stars wowed with their rendition of "Respectfully Yours," sung by Full Blown.

Online chat bush judges were busy picking winners and providing reasons for favorites not making it to the top three places. Having said that, it was an amazing night, and, in the end, steelband music lovers enjoyed it all.

Call it the panorama of one point of separation!

A repeat victory for Exodus, a fierce challenge from Renegades, and a triumphant return to the podium for Silver Stars. This was Panorama at its absolute best.

The Road March has always been the final showdown of Trinidad and Tobago’s Carnival—the moment when the nation’s collective heartbeat decides which song truly ruled the road. It’s the one competition traditionally labeled the “people’s choice.” Yet, in recent years, many have questioned whether that title still holds weight. Increasingly, the sentiment is that the Road March has shifted from a road result to a stage result, with performances at major judging points overshadowing the organic, spontaneous power of what the people actually play and love.

Still, the culture moves, and we move with it. Let's get real now, and we do believe that the system will lean toward stage plays, and that means strategic promotion, visibility, and strategic presence become just as important as raw popularity. With that in mind, three songs stand out as the true contenders for Road March 2026—each with its own narrative, momentum, and potential to dominate the road.

1. Bunji Garlin—"Still A Road Man"

Bunji has openly said he’s not competing for Road March this year, but that hasn’t stopped the streets from gravitating toward one of the most compelling releases of the season. “Still A Road Man” carries the grit, swagger, and chant‑ready energy that naturally fits the road. Whether he registered the song or not, plays count, and if the people decide this is the anthem they want, it could still rise to the top. Bunji has a way of winning without trying—and that unpredictability makes him a real factor.

2. Voice—"Cyah Behave Mehself"

This is my personal pick; there is something special about this song. Voice delivered a track that feels joyful, infectious, and tailor‑made for masqueraders who want to free up and revel. The only concern is promotion. The song is strong, but it doesn’t feel like Voice is pushing it on radio or across platforms with the intensity that Road March season demands. If this tune had the same promotional firepower as its competitors, it could easily be the front‑runner. Still, its emotional pull and Carnival spirit make it a real contender.

3. Machel Montano—"Encore"

Say what you want about Machel—the man understands the Road March game better than anyone alive. “Encore” is not just a song; it’s a campaign, and that campaign is loaded with Carnival energy. He’s promoting it actively, strategically, and consistently. That alone gives him an edge. Machel knows how to position a track so that it becomes unavoidable during Carnival week, and that level of mastery can’t be underestimated. If the Road March has indeed become a “stage march,” then Machel is playing the stage like a seasoned general.

So who wins?

One of these three songs will take the title. The beauty—and the frustration—of Road March is that we won’t know until the trucks roll, the DJs choose, and the masqueraders respond. Carnival 2026 hits the road next week, and the plays will tell the story.

Whether it’s Bunji’s non‑entrant but wildly popular song, Voice’s feel‑good anthem, or Machel’s strategic precision, the result will reflect not just the music but the evolving nature of the competition itself. In other words, the winner won’t be the one with the “best” song. The winner will be the one who best aligns with where the competition is right now—its values, its trends, and its expectations.
