Local and international journalists are gearing up to cover multiple major events in the U.S. this year -- including the World Cup and midterm elections -- and may face heightened risks as a result. Join the U.S. Journalist Assistance Network for a free roundtable focused on best practices for interacting with police and federal law enforcement, crossing borders amid increased screenings, preparing for device searches or seizures, knowing your rights in the context of arrest or detention, and navigating crowd or police violence at matches and rallies. The roundtable will feature legal and safety experts from Freedom of the Press Foundation, International Women’s Media Foundation, Kuck Baxter LLC, and Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press??'and will be moderated by PEN America.

The Education Writers Association (EWA) will hold its 2026 National Seminar in Baltimore, Maryland, June 2-5, 2026. Scholarships are available to journalists covering education, whether full-time on the beat or for a particular investigation, series or story. (We are currently offering journalists impacted by layoffs and newsroom cuts priority consideration for scholarships covering registration.)

The 79th annual National Seminar will follow seismic changes to education at the federal level, including huge staffing cuts in the U.S. Department of Education, the loss of federal funding for research at universities and an overhaul of the student loan system. Meanwhile, schools, educators and students face ongoing challenges -- from inequitable resources to declining enrollment -- while navigating emerging trends, such as significant growth among workforce development programs and the use of artificial intelligence.

EWA will use this unprecedented moment to help members understand how stakeholders are affected amid major shifts in federal oversight and funding while also providing training and offering solutions on how to best cover persistent education issues. Sessions focusing on journalism skills -- from best FOIA request practices to effectively using archival material in coverage --will also be a key part of the conference.

RSVP is required at spjfreelancecommunity@gmail.com
Thursday, June 4, 2026 at 6pm ET

The SPJ Freelance Community has launched a workshop for journalist coping with ADHD. We invite you to join us for “Freelancing with ADHD: Productivity Strategies That Actually Work,” a virtual, hands-on training offered by expert, Jen Brdlik, who is focused on providing proven strategies to help you succeed.

Jen Brdlik, MSW, LMT, BCTMB, is neurodivergent life coach, former mental health therapist, and an ADHD and autism specialist.

Some neurodivergent journalists find themselves distracted in a world of chaos, especially when their brain is wired
differently. The struggle is real. Even if you’re disciplined, your brain may find that it is difficult to balance many things while on assignment.

It’s not unusual for a freelance journalist to pitch stories to an editor, research topics, track down subject matter experts, deal with deadlines, all while working on multiple assignments at once.

Whether you’re a full-time or part-time freelance journalist overwhelmed or on the verge of burnout, this session will help you assess difficulties, deal with pressure and offer tips to keep you calm while you thrive and achieve clarity and control.

RSVP is required at spjfreelancecommunity@gmail.com

The Society of Professional Journalists Foundation presents the Eugene S. Pulliam First Amendment Award to honor a person or persons who have fought to protect and preserve one or more of the rights guaranteed by the First Amendment.

Mr. Pulliam, who died in January 1999, was publisher of The Indianapolis Star and The Indianapolis News until his death and was well-known for consistently supporting activities which educated the public about First Amendment rights and values. The Foundation has established this annual award to honor those committed to the same goals and as a tribute to the professional contributions that he made to journalism.

Annually at the SPJ National Convention, the SPJ Foundation will honor an individual, group of individuals or organization with a $10,000 cash award and an engraved crystal. The honoree(s) also will receive transportation (airfare and two-night hotel stay) to the national convention.
