Join the DC SPJ chapter in an online discussion about When the Declaration of Independence Was News with author Dr. Emily Sneff.

Dr. Emily Sneff is an early American historian and leading expert on the Declaration of Independence. She earned her Ph.D. in History from William & Mary. She is a consulting curator for exhibitions marking the 250th anniversary of the Declaration at the Museum of the American Revolution and Historic Trappe.
Through The SPJ News, the Society of Professional Journalists prepares the next generation of storytellers and truth seekers. Ten student journalists will be selected to cover presentations and events at the SPJ national convention, SPJ26 in Columbus, Ohio. Their work will be published at thespjnews.org.

The SPJ News team includes three professional journalists who serve as mentors and guide the students during the convention

The SPJ News participants will cover stories and enjoy opportunities to network with other students and professionals. Student journalists will also be expected to share their stories on their social media platforms using #SPJNews26.

Applicants should be student journalists who can produce videos and audio segments, shoot photos and write digital stories on tight deadlines. The more you can do the better. In your application, show us how you can use social media platforms to report the news. AP Style is required, and if you already use it in your reporting, let us know on your application.
From the National Press Club in Washington to the Foreign Correspondents Club in Hong Kong and all places in between, journalists have always enjoyed a good drink after hours. Now you can learn how that drink is made.

Join the DC SPJ chapter for a tour of Motherwell Distillery in Alexandria to see how Brickwater Bourbon is made.

Along with the one-hour tour, we will enjoy samples of the distillery’s product.

The cost is just $10/person.

Sign up early space is limited to 20 people.

The platform we use for tickets is free to groups such as ours. It will ask for a “tip” when you pay for your ticket. This is strictly optional.

PS: Sign up and learn the link between this distillery and the general manager of an NPR station in Michigan.

On July 27, 2007, two television news helicopters collided over Steele Indian School Park in central Phoenix. Four journalists aboard the two aircraft were killed. The SPJ Valley of the Sun professional chapter is working with the families of these men on the annual commemorative ceremony held at a memorial erected at the site.

The remembrance will be at 9 a.m. Monday, July 27, 2026. The public is invited.
Pilot Scott Bowerbank and photographer Jim Cox of KTVK-TV, Channel 3, and pilot Craig Smith and photographer Rick Krolak of KNXV-TV, Channel 15, were killed when their helicopters collided while covering a police chase of a suspected criminal. No one else was harmed when the two aircraft fell to the ground.

An informal observance has been held annually at the site, but SPJ became involved to ensure that a commemoration of this tragedy will take place each year, regardless of the passage of time.

The Society of Professional Journalists is powered by volunteers committed to the future of the profession and the freedoms that support it. We invite you to be part of that work.

SPJ’s national committees and communities are where ideas take shape, where ethical questions are explored, programs are developed and press freedom is advanced. As we work to broaden participation and strengthen these groups, we welcome your involvement.

Applications are now being accepted for committee service for the next term, October 2026 through September 2027. Learn more about each committee.

Looking for another way to get involved? SPJ's Freelance Community and International Community are open to all members. Join the conversation, connect with colleagues and participate year-round ??' no application required.

SPJ committees and communities and their current chairs are:

Advocacy, co-chaired by Frank LoMonte and Susan King
Awards & Honors, co-chaired by Andy Schotz and Sue Kopen Katcef
Bylaws & Regulations, chaired by Sara Catania
Diversity & Inclusion, chaired by Michael Puente
Ethics, chaired by Dan Axelrod
Finance, chaired by Sara Catania
First Amendment Forever Fund, chaired by Laura Garcia
Freedom of Information, chaired by Michael Morisy
Freelance Community, chaired by Stacie Overton Johnson
International Community, chaired by Dan Kubiske
Journalism Education, chaired by Jess Brovsky-Eaker
Legal Defense Fund, chaired by Tim Eigo
Membership & Nominations, chaired by Claire Regan
Programming, chaired by Adam Sennott

Whether your focus is education, membership, ethics, advocacy or programming, committee and community service offers a meaningful way to support SPJ’s mission while building leadership experience, expanding your network and working alongside colleagues who share your commitment to journalism.

Many SPJ leaders, including past presidents, began their involvement through this service.

If you’re interested in serving, please submit an application by Sept. 17.

Committee and community chairs will review all applications and may reach out for additional information. Placement will depend on available openings and organizational needs. Those selected to serve on an SPJ committee or community will be notified in October.

Not all applicants can be placed each year. If your preferred committee or community has reached capacity, we encourage you to apply again during a future application cycle.

Thank you for your willingness to serve SPJ and continued support for a free and ethical press.
