The RSS Feed Reader extension for Chrome browser works well in getting updates from the Meta > Entries and Comments feeds for blog posts and from this forum, I\'ve yet to succeed in getting results with the groups.io Integration which could provide email notifications. This WordPress site has never supported email notifications for new blog posts and comments thereon and while it does for forum subscribers, we have not promoted it because the daily limit is only 100 emails. that\'s one notification to 100 subscribers and then it\'s blocked for 24 hours. Forgive me for making some noise in this channel while testing.

Hopefully faster publishing of posts and comments

We\'ve just turned on a feature buried deep within settings that should reduce the time delay between submitting a post (or comment/reply) from tens of seconds to seconds. That\'s at the expense of delaying the sending of email notifications for it by a minute or so, which seems like a small price to pay for what is a slow-paced forum and blog.

This comes after years of frustration watching the lag grow, intermittently taking various measures that had little effect, seeking help from the developer of the forum plugin et al. Unnoticed by me, with updates for WP, PHP and the more than a dozen plugins coming at a near daily rate, there was this update from the Easy WP SMTP plugin that handles the mailing of notifications:
2.6.0 - 2024-09-25

 ...
Added: Optimized Email Sending - improve your site\'s performance by handling email requests in the background.

It\'s an option near the bottom of a long page that is accessed via the Misc tab at the extreme right of the plugin\'s Settings, set to Off by default. There it has sat unnoticed and unchanged for almost two years, until yesterday.

I\'ve re-enabled the WP Mail Logging plugin which I had disabled months ago because I thought it might be contributing to the delay. It helps in discovering and analysing email problems the site may be having.

This post is a bit of a test itself to see if it publishes quickly. Hopefully everyone else will see a big improvement when replying or posting anew.

Hashtag behaviour has changed for new tags

Ahh, the perils of WordPress Plugins. I\'ve used a bunch to make navigation and other things work better for this website than it would with unenhanced WordPress but it does run the risk that support may wane over time. That\'s happened for a few plugins used here from sole developers that stagnated at some version of PHP or WordPress preceding the current ones.

Case in point is the Hashtagger plugin which enables a WP Post (not a Forum post) author/editor to type some #tagname into the Subject or body and it would, on publishing:

add that tagname to the table of Tagnames if it was new
format the #tagname in the subject and body of the post as a hyperlink to a dynamic page that would show all the posts having the same tag

In the last year or so, that second step fails for new tags but still works of tags that were created in an earlier era. The attached image of a post illustrates the problem. #RM11 #AI #acheck #rm11 are all newly created from the post\'s subject and body but are not hyperlinked therein. #phantom #database #rm10 #rm4 #RM7 are older tags and are hyperlinked (highlighted in green) in the subject and/or body.

Fortunately, the 1st step still works and the newly created tags are listed alphabetically by WP in the Tags list after the body of the post and they are hyperlinked from there. The Tag Cloud and Tag List plugins still work with both the older and later tagnames.

Test with WP Mail Logging plugin deactivated

What I\'ve seen in this plugin\'s logs is that notification emails take 3-4s per person who has opted for email notifications from a forum. But notifications for blog posts and pages are much faster. Is there a problem between the Asgaros plugin and the Easy WP SMTP plugin that sends the notifications that is caused by WP Mail Logging plugin?

Test publish response time after moving all posts earlier than 2025-01-01 to another Category

Because the time delay from submitting a new topic or a comment on an existing one to it being published has grown to around 25-30 seconds as the Forum database has increased in size, and after experiments revealed that response times were on the order of 10x better for posts to a forum in a new Category, I\'ve created an Archive Category and moved all posts earlier than 2025-01-01 into its forum \"Closed Topics\". This substantially reduces the number of posts in the former Chit-Chat Forum renamed \"Discussion\" under the former \"General\" Category renamed \"Current\". This post is intended to measure what the response time is in the now much lightened Category.

Forum post editor features

As of today, the message editor has been liberated from its \"minimalistic\" setting so you now see an expanded menu of features. Notable for this forum is the keyboard shortcut list under the ? icon, one of which is the shortcut to mark text as code: shift+alt+x.

For long posts, insert a read-more tag shift+alt+t after the opening paragraph.

You don\'t even have to lift your hands from the keyboard to look up a keyboard shortcut because there is one to do just that shift+alt+h.
