I hope this message finds you well. I have some exciting news to share with you all. As many of you know, I am the proud owner of two wonderful businesses: Velvet Noir Studios LLC, specializing in portrait and event photography, and The Lythik Noir Collective, offering handmade and vintage items with a darker aesthetic.

Our New Shop

Today, I am thrilled to announce that The Lythik Noir Collective will be opening a shop on Main Street in Oneonta! This new chapter is incredibly exciting, and I can’t wait to share our unique collections with you in person. We hope to have this space ready and open by late September or early October. We will be taking over where the Superheroes in Ripped Jeanes Thrift Store was located at 250 Main Street.

However, this change also means that I will be making a significant adjustment to Velvet Noir Studios. In order to support the new shop, I will be giving up my beloved studio space in the historic CANO building. This decision was not made lightly, as I have cherished every moment spent in that beautiful studio. The space provided by CANO has been an inspiring and wonderful environment, and I am deeply appreciative of the opportunity to have worked there.

The Future of Velvet Noir

While I may no longer have a permanent studio space, I want to assure you all that Velvet Noir Studios will continue to offer all the same photography services. If a client needs a studio space for their photos, I can still rent a space as needed to ensure we capture the perfect moments together. My commitment to delivering high-quality, personalized photography experiences remains unchanged. I will have the space through the end of July, but will be spending most of the month clearing out the space and preparing it for the next lucky artist.

This month has been an eye-opening and deeply moving experience for me. As someone who had limited knowledge about Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders (PMAD), I found myself on a path of learning, empathy, and immense respect, thanks to two incredible women in my life who chose to share their personal journeys.

When my friend first suggested writing blog posts about PMAD, I didn’t realize the profound impact it would have. She started with an opening post, providing resources and setting the stage for a series of personal narratives. Little did I know that the stories to follow would not only educate me but also touch my heart deeply. You can read that post HERE.

Kristi, with courage and vulnerability, shared her experience with PMAD. Her words painted a vivid picture of the challenges she faced and the resilience she discovered within herself. Reading her story, I felt a surge of admiration for her strength. It was a powerful reminder of the silent battles many women fight and the importance of bringing these conversations into the open. To these amazing women, I want to say how proud I am to know you. Your bravery in sharing your experiences not only helps break the stigma around PMAD but also offers solace and hope to others who might be facing similar struggles. Your stories are a testament to your strength and the strength of countless others who have walked this path.

I am deeply thankful for the trust you’ve placed in me and this platform. It has been an honor to provide a space for your voices and experiences. Your openness and honesty have enriched my understanding and have undoubtedly touched many others.

As Maternal Mental Health Awareness Month comes to an end it’s important to reflect on the lessons we’ve learned. Perinatal mood or anxiety disorders (PMADs), sometimes referred to as maternal mental health (MMH) disorders, can happen to anyone regardless of age, race, gender, wealth, or health. They can occur both in pregnancy and after a birth or a loss. If left untreated, they can have detrimental effects on mother and baby. They are all treatable. Shame and guilt often have new parents staying silent about their symptoms, masking their feelings, and hiding their fear. Lack of education gives rise to situations in which individuals do not recognize what is happening to them and, unfortunately, undereducated medical professionals may not recognize it either. Spreading awareness and education is how we overcome the unnecessary, but very real shame, how we overcome undereducated/underinformed medical professionals, and most importantly how we overcome the statistics. 1 in 5 new or expecting mothers experience a maternal mental health disorder. It is estimated that “50-70% of MMH disorders go undiagnosed, and 75% of those diagnosed go untreated.“ 1 This needs to change.

I wanted to create this awareness campaign because this topic is close to my heart. This month a dear friend and I chose to open up about our experiences with antepartum and postpartum mood disorders. These stories are deeply personal, and for me the choice to share grew out of my own needs while struggling. I needed to know what the symptoms were, I needed education these PMADs existed, and I needed to know that I was not alone. Hearing others’ stories validate our own experiences and remind us that these are true medical disorders and not a reflection of who we are as parents. They also give hope and show that there is help available. I can only hope this campaign reaches and makes a difference for at least 1 struggling parent. Thank you to anyone who has gathered enough courage to break the silence and speak openly about your experience. Through these stories others feel less alone, the stigma is broken, and the reality of what a PMAD truly looks like is brought to light. Since I was a little girl, I’ve only ever wanted to be a mom. I used to take care of my baby dolls and dream of the day when I would grow up and have babies of my own. I remember daydreaming about being pregnant and one day feeling the baby kick. I remember hearing that “you become a mom the moment you get pregnant” and “you’ll bond with the baby the moment you see the two little pink lines” and “you’ll glow”.

One morning, I did see those two pink lines and I was undoubtedly excited. I was so happy to be able to share this amazing news with my husband and go on this wonderful journey together.

I remember I started feeling sick around 8 weeks and was not even phased by it. I told myself “This is good, every mom goes through this in the beginning”. Weeks went on, and I didn’t feel better. I was finding myself feeling worse and with that came the depression.

I had heard of postpartum depression before, but I had never heard of anyone feeling depressed WHILE they were pregnant. This was supposed to be a joyous time, a time of firsts, a time for new beginnings, a time for bonding. I felt nothing. I withdrew, I stopped listening to music, I stopped singing, I stopped caring. I was very concerned that something was going to happen to the baby or myself. I remember feeling like I couldn’t breathe every day on the way to work. I remember not feeling a bond for this precious baby growing inside of me and asking my husband, “what if I don’t bond with the baby when she is born?”. I’m not sure if he understood why I asked that question because I kept all of the dark feelings inside. I felt ashamed and embarrassed that I felt this way when all I’ve ever talked about was being a mom. My husband worked out of town five days a week at the time, so it was very easy to hide my struggle. I didn’t want to talk or be touched. I would go to work and come home and be alone in my panic and depression. I was a shell of myself.

Ruby was born on November 2 nd , 2018 and we bonded right away. My husband still jokes about wondering if I would bond because Ruby and I are very close and always have been. Most of those negative feelings went away with time, but I was still not the person I was before.

Fast forward to 2 years later. I am 6 weeks pregnant and terrified that the same feelings would happen again. I had decided that I would not be silent this time. I knew I would need help if those same feelings arose. I told my husband, doctor, family, and friends of my previous struggles.

My second pregnancy was also a challenge but much better than my first. I still had intrusive thoughts that something would happen to me or the baby, but I did not feel debilitating depression. My mom saw the first picture of me after I had Jack and she said she could tell just from my face how relieved I was.

During my pregnancy with Jack, I had researched a term I had never heard of before, Antepartum Depression. It happens in 7% of women overall. Those are just reported cases. I often wonder how many people struggle and don’t come forward because they are ashamed or embarrassed like I was. I would like to tell them they are not alone! Pregnancy and motherhood are not for the faint of heart. Both can be very hard. It is easy to think you are alone in your circumstances but more times than not, someone has felt just like you. Talking to someone can help! There is no shame in telling someone you are struggling. I recently have started counseling to navigate through some of those thoughts I had during pregnancy. I still get waves of depression here and there so I thought it would be helpful to gather as many tools as I could for the dark days. I feel like I am on the right track and encourage people to seek help if they feel like they are or have been struggling during pregnancy or not. It has taken a great amount of courage to seek help and to admit why I need help.

An older mom also reminded me just a few weeks ago that “God’s mercies are new every morning” (Lamentations 3: 22-23). She was referring to motherhood, but I applied it to my experiences in pregnancy as well. This rekindled my faith in God and got me on the track to read my Bible every day. It also has strengthened my mental health to know I am not alone and there is purpose to my life!

My very close friend once told me: “You grieve the life you used to have before having a baby.” I think that refers to the freedom you once had before devoting your whole life to a baby. I refer to it as the whole person I was before I got pregnant. I am not the old me but I’m learning to really like the new me. It feels as though an old light has dimmed somewhere in my soul, but my children have lit SO many more lights that I have never knew existed. The bond my children and I have now is unbreakable. And we have so much fun every day!

    It’s a weird feeling to be betrayed by your own mind. Unfortunately, that was my reality after

Ella’s birth. I was 4 months postpartum when I first noticed I wasn’t quite right. I told a friend “I’ve been

crying every day, so I’m going to need to watch that,” and kind of brushed it off from there. Before I

knew it, I was in too deep to even recognize what was happening. I was crying every day, not showering,

dressing, or brushing my teeth. The idea of housework wasn’t even on my radar. The only thing I was

capable of was caring for Ella. I was starting to experience paranoia. I wasn’t focused or present but

instead lived in my head. The feeling of awe that I had when Ella was born was gone. I would look at her,

knowing I should feel it, knowing in my brain I loved her more than anything, but I didn’t feel it. I don’t

think anyone knew this. We had deeply bonded. We were together 24/7 and I knew all the things I

should be doing and saying, so I continued doing and saying them even though I no longer felt it

inside.     

Covid lockdown began when Ella was only 3 weeks old. Because of constant trips to the clinic for

weight checks, and the transition in general, we hadn’t invited family or friends over to meet her. After

the lockdown, we lost that option. The reality of this hit somewhere around 2 months in, and by 4 months I

was in a constant state of mourning. I was mourning losing out on the experience of introducing my first

born to my loved ones, mourning not being able to bring my child out into the world, mourning not

having family and friends support, as COVID prevented me from accepting any support that may have

been offered. I was terrified of Covid. It made me afraid of everyone and everything. As someone with

autoimmune issues, who spent much of my childhood sick, I was convinced if I got Covid I would die,

and my daughter would be left with no one to care for her. I was afraid to leave the house and afraid to

let anyone in it. It ate away at me day after day. My body was in a constant state of fight or flight, only

for me it was more like freeze or flight. I didn’t have the energy to fight. I was depressed, confused,

unfocused, and overwhelmed.     

Suddenly I was experiencing anxiety and OCD symptoms. My body was tense all the time, my

thoughts racing, my chest tight, and I was having panic attacks for the first time in my life. My body was

so full of fear all I saw were worst-case scenarios, and not just about COVID-19, but about everything. My

mind was flooded with intrusive thoughts. I couldn’t drive because I believed if I did that I would drive

directly into oncoming traffic. I couldn’t go anywhere without Ella, because I was convinced if I did I

would die and never return home to her. Everything became scary, everything was a threat. Most of my

intrusive thoughts came in the form of visions. I didn’t just think these fears and thoughts, I saw them

play out before me. I was constantly seeing Ella being injured, bleeding out, dying, dead. If someone said

something as simple as “I’m going to take Ella outside,” I would see them tripping down the stairs and

her bleeding out on the pavement below with her skull cracked open. Then I would come up with some

excuse for carrying her outside myself to prevent that from happening. I felt like I had to take her

picture every single day. Some nights I would be in my bed, trying to sleep when I’d realize I hadn’t. I’d

have to get out of bed, go into her nursery, and take a picture of her sleeping, hoping the flash wouldn’t

wake her. I was so afraid that she was going to die or be kidnapped, I needed to ensure I had a picture of

her last day with me. With time it became a preventative measure; if I take this picture nothing will

happen to her, and she will be fine. I had to log all her meals, drinks, breastfeeding minutes, pump

times, diaper changes, food amounts, bottle ounces, exact times she ate and got changed. Because what

if something happened and I didn’t have that? I needed it to protect her. I would want that information

20 years from now. I would need that information 20 years from now. Or so I believed.    

I experienced terrible postpartum rage. One day I screamed at a stranger on the phone.

Screamed in a way I never knew I was capable of. The only way to describe it is that it felt like the devil’s

voice was pouring out of my body. The shame and guilt that I felt and still feel is deep and real, as was

this rage. My muscles would tense, and fists would form. I’d be shaking my fists in the air because I didn’t

know how to get the anger out, but I knew I couldn’t hit anything. I desperately wanted to punch a hole

in the wall, to break every glass in the cabinet, to throw something through the window and hear the

glass shatter. I would have visions of throwing things and breaking things. I remember rocking Ella to

sleep one day in her nursery, her content in my arms. I was feeding her a bottle and she was calm and

quiet. I was raging inside. The tension in my body building and building, even though she was being

nothing but perfect. Then I had a vision; I ripped the bottle out of her mouth and threw it against the

wall as hard as I could, milk splattering everywhere. I saw it happen, I felt it in my body, I heard the

crying that it caused, it was so real. Yet, none of it was real, it was just an unwanted intrusive thought. I

was terrified. Of all the visions I had thus far, none of them involved my anger taking place anywhere

near Ella. I put her in her crib, went into my bedroom and collapsed to the floor, sobbing. I was frozen,

lost, confused, and terrified. I was afraid that if I moved, I would hurt her. That was the first day I said it

out loud. “I think I have postpartum depression.”     

It’s unbelievable how hard it is to say those words. I texted my mom, asking her to come over,

and told her. She called the women’s health office for me and, as it was evening, spoke to an on-call

nurse. The nurse didn’t know what to recommend, other than a trip to the ER, because I was “past the

3-month postpartum period.” Eventually, she suggested I see my primary doctor. I saw my doctor the

next day and was diagnosed with postpartum depression. She recommended medication, but I was

afraid to take anything. She gave me a website to check out, ordered bloodwork, sent in a prescription

for Zoloft (which I wouldn’t take), and asked that I make an appointment to return in 2 weeks. When I

returned for my follow-up appointment, I was feeling much worse. I was desperate and finally ready to

try the medication. I started a low dose of Zoloft that night. The next day, I clipped Ella’s nails with

vintage nail scissors I had been given. They were shaped like a stork and had long curved blades.

Afterward, she was lying on the floor in front of me and the scissors were lying beside me. Suddenly, I

grabbed the scissors and in one swift motion I stabbed her in the forehead. But I hadn’t, it was another

vision. I felt the movements, I saw the blood, and yet, it hadn’t actually happened. I slowly moved the

scissors out of my reach, hoping no one would notice, and thought to myself “Thank God I began the

medication, I am getting so much worse.”     

Two weeks later I heard two little words that I will never forget. “Drown her.” Clear instructions.

Though I didn’t recognize the voice, I knew it was talking to me. I didn’t need to question who it was

speaking of; I knew the “her” it was referring to was my 7-month-old. I had just woken up and there was

no one around. It was an auditory hallucination. My own brain was responsible for saying and hearing

those words. I froze in bed asking myself “Did I just hear that?” I did. It was clear as day. I tried to wish it

away, to undo it. Later, I hesitated to, but I told my mom “There’s something I should tell you.” I began

to cry as I told her I heard a voice, and it told me to do something bad to Ella. I couldn’t say out loud the

words I had heard. I still have never said them out loud. She told me we needed to call the doctor and

they will need to change my medication. I hadn’t considered that it could be a result of the medication.

When I went in, the doctor left the room to get her supervisor. I was terrified they would want to take

my daughter from me. They came back in the room together and the supervising physician calmly told

me he has seen firsthand how PPD can affect someone and that sometimes the medicine they hope will

help can instead make things worse. He said they would give me a new medication from a different class

of drugs and monitor it closely. I was afraid to try anything else, but I was also desperate and broken, so

I did.     

I began the new medicine and started attending 3 online support groups each week through the

website my primary doctor had given me, postpartum.net. At about 8 ½ months postpartum I began

virtual therapy and support groups at The Motherhood Center. As I started to improve my rage slowly

lessened, I began dressing and showering slightly more often, and the feeling of “awe” returned.

Unfortunately, life stressors and unanticipated trauma derailed my recovery. I had a complete mental

break and became catatonic for a short period. I developed PTSD and fear continued to rule my life. I

don’t remember much from that period, but I do have many memories of Ella and I hiding because I

heard a noise and thought someone might be at my house to harm us. I remember having a go-bag

packed and ready in case we ever needed to suddenly leave town. The intrusive thoughts and visions I

had been having of harm coming to Ella stopped and shifted to intrusive thoughts of harm coming to

myself. I started having visions of hurting myself. I’d be in the middle of cutting a sandwich and would

have a vision of stabbing myself. I had to stop using sharp knives. I had a vision of a noose hanging in my

closet and began questioning if I was suicidal. I had a vision of an old army box sitting in my room with

the word “suicide” written on the side of it. Something so out of the ordinary, yet so specific, I can still

picture it. There were many days I wanted to disappear. I wanted to crawl into a deep hole and go to

sleep for a long time, but I never wanted to die. I couldn’t, I needed to be there for Ella. Even though I

didn’t want to hurt myself and I didn’t want to die, it felt like the idea of suicide was taunting me. “What

if I hurt myself?” “What if I kill myself?” “What if I am suicidal and just don’t realize it?” “What if I

become suicidal and aren’t self-aware enough to tell someone before it’s too late?” I no longer trusted

my own sanity.     

It was suggested by one doctor that the only reason I had auditory hallucinations was

because of the medication. A different doctor believed it was my fragile mental state combined with the

medication that caused it. Another told me that it was just another intrusive thought that had

manifested differently than the others. Most days I tell myself it was the medication because I don’t

want to believe my brain is capable of going there on its own. But there’s always doubt. Those “What

ifs” linger. I am beyond grateful that my brain was still working well enough that day to know I didn’t

want to do what the voice was telling me to. I was told it typically takes an entire year from the time

treatment begins to start feeling like yourself again, and that progress would not be linear. It took 2

years before I saw a glimpse of the person I used to be. Even now, the person I am is dramatically

different than who I was, and that’s okay. I took the time I needed to grieve for her, and now I am

building a new me. My postpartum period was nothing I had anticipated and has changed me to the

core of who I am and how I see the world. I feel extremely lucky to have had the support of my mother

helping me through each day. And luckier still that through it all I was able to continue caring for Ella. I

truly believe she saved me during that time. Her little voice over the baby monitor would wake me each

day. Every day her presence pushed me to get out of bed, to seek out the help I needed, and to push

through and fake it when I felt like I couldn’t do it anymore.    

I share my story for two reasons. One, my story has felt like a heavy weight that I’ve been

keeping buried deep inside myself. I have finally reached a point where I am ready to share my

experience and free myself of this burden I have been carrying for too long. Two, because I know how

helpful it can be to hear someone else’s story and to know you are not alone. I can only hope that my

story will reach someone who is in the depths of it and help them to know they are not crazy, they are

not alone, and there is help available. In today’s world, it is normal to only share the highlights of our

lives while we hide the painful parts. But the painful parts are often where we need the most help, love,

and acceptance, and sharing them is where we build the deepest connections. I want my daughter to

grow up in a world where the realities of perinatal mental health disorders are widely known, taught,

and treated without judgment. Creating that reality starts with those of us who have experienced it

and aren’t afraid to share our stories.

The Background:

I have been working with Meer for a couple of years now (almost three). I met him when he was a teacher's assistant for the Kids Summer Arts Program I was running for The Community Arts Network of Oneonta (CANO). He had shown an interest in photography and really wanted to learn more. I was happy to teach him what I knew and give him some real experience in the field. Now he is my second shooter at weddings and has come into his own. In this way, Meer was my very first Mentee (and one that I am so proud of). 

I have thought about teaching classes for years, but the idea always seemed overwhelming to me. I also got flashbacks from my college classes and the feeling of getting put into a little box where photography was a specific formula and not a form of creative expression. If I were to work with large groups, I would assume that the students would get this same feeling. And I, for one, am not here to put anyone in a box. 

Then Hope, from CANO, approached me about providing one-on-one mentorships instead. This idea made me light up! This is something I had already been doing with Meer, and it was a way to help others dig deeper into this field that I love so much. Being able to sit down with someone, discuss their wants and needs, and help them grow their knowledge (and hopefully passion) for this form of art seemed like it would be a perfect fit. 

The Mentorships:

There are currently three options to choose from with the mentorship programs offered through CANO. There are two shorter options that include: Intro to Portrait Photography, and Intro to Phone Photography. The last option is the full Photography Mentorship Program. 

Intro to Portrait Photography:

This option is great for beginner photographers who are looking to get an overview of portrait photography. We will meet in my studio, and will sometimes venture outside to really work on the skills we go over. 

This will all take about 4 hours in total and will be broken into 1 or 2-hour days. Whatever works best for the both of us. 

You will need a model for some of these days, you can bring one with you (this can be a friend or family member), or for an additional $60 we can provide a model for you. 

Topics Covered: 

• Understanding camera settings

• Composition Principals 

• Posing Techniques 

• Framing and Composition for portraits

• Working with natural lighting

Intro to Phone Photography:

This option is for anyone who wants to learn to take better photos with their phone camera because everyone wants to take great pictures! 

This option will take about 4 hours and can be broken down into 1 or 2-hour sessions. Whatever works best for both of us.

Portrait Photography Mentorship Program:

This option is fully customizable, depending on where you are in your photography journey- your starting point will be different. These sessions will take place in my studio and outdoors! This mentorship includes an initial consultation to assess current skill level, a customized curriculum, scheduled sessions, hands-on practice, feedback & critique, goal setting, and access to resources.

The Undervalued Service

One common misconception is the undervaluation of photography as a service. To many, it may seem like a mere click of a button, but the truth is that photographers invest time, energy, and money into honing their craft. The value lies not just in the final image but in the skills, experience, and artistic vision that professionals bring to the table.

Not a “cheap” profession: 

When I talk with people about the gear and equipment I have acquired through my years of being a photographer, they always seem shocked when I tell them how much things cost. 

Camera and Lenses:

One common misconception is the undervaluation of photography as a service. When discussing the gear and equipment invested in over years of being a photographer, people are often surprised by the costs. Starting with a humble Canon Rebel, a $500 investment, my journey evolved from personal use to a full-fledged profession. However, professional-grade cameras and lenses can range from $3,000 to $10,000, emphasizing the importance of investing in quality gear.

Lighting:

Cheap lighting equipment sets may seem tempting, but their subpar quality leads to additional editing time and unsatisfactory results. Other expenses: 

After your tools are taken care of, there are still many costs to consider when running a photography business. Some of those are:

Booking - Made Easy

The first app I was to highlight is Session. Session is a booking application created for photographers. I have been using this on and off for the past three years. Every time I cancel and try something new, I always end up coming back.

If I like it so much? Why do I cancel?

I have canceled and come back to this application twice now. The first time, it was because I was trying out a CRM (Customer Relations Manager) that had a built-in appointment booking system. It made sense to use that function because I was paying for it. Their booking system ended up being complicated and clunky. Clients couldn’t just go to my calendar and book a session. They had to request a session, then I had to send them an invite with available dates. This honestly just created more work for me, and wasn’t worth it. Plus, if you are a photographer who holds mini-sessions - you would have to book all of those sessions manually. This company has recently announced that they did change their booking process to accommodate minis, but it’s still a multi-step process that you have to accomplish manually.

The second time I canceled, was when I moved my website to square space. Square Space has it’s own built-in scheduling system (for an extra cost). I found this system to be better than the one with the CRM, but still overly complicated - and no real way to book mini-sessions without having to schedule everything manually.

What makes Session work?

• Session was built FOR photographers. It comes with a booking page where clients can look at all of your session types and choose the one that works best for them.

• Mini-sessions are so easy! You just click to add a mini to your available sessions, add all details, and share one link with clients so they can easily choose their time slot, fill out a questionnaire, sign your contract, and pay all from one place. Clients are even sent reminders for their upcoming sessions with emails that you can customize to fit your brand. These sessions will also appear on your booking page for easy access if they don’t have a direct link.

• Options for payments! If you are like me, you require a deposit for booking a session (If you don’t, I suggest you do. This cuts down on no-shows). With Session, you can either require that the payment is made in full, have it due the day of the session, or require a deposit. If you set it to require a deposit, you can set your amount. Session also allows you to accept credit cards with Square integration, Paypal, Venmo, and you can record payments from other methods like Cash.

• Calendar integration and availability. You can set the availability for all of your sessions. You can group them, or set availability for one type. I did this with my couples sessions which are only discounted if booked for a date in February. This will allow clients to get the discount without having to use a coupon code (you can set these up with Session, however). I also like the option of connecting my personal and business calendars to my booking calendar. Once I add something to either of my Google calendars and mark them as “busy”, Session will remove that time from my availability calendar. No more double-booking yourself! There is also the ability to set booking limits, and you can set time between sessions so you don’t have to go from one session right into another.

As I said before, Session was built for photographers, so it makes sense that everything just works and works well.

New Studio, who dis?

I have always dreamed of having my own photography studio. This past year the pieces just seemed to fall into place. I have been on the board of CANO (Community Arts Network of Oneonta) for a couple of years now, and really fell in love with the culture and the people there. I even had the pleasure of running the Summer Arts Program for two years. When there was a studio space available in the mansion, I knew I had to look into it. Just walking into the empty room, I knew it was the one. Although it is on the smaller side, the lighting is gorgeous and the vibe just felt right.

For the next few months, I worked on creating a space for my clients (and me) to enjoy. Once my studio was all put together, I had a sitting area for meetings (which also worked perfectly for holiday sessions), a shooting area with a suspended backdrop stand, and a small kitchen area stocked with coffee, tea, and snacks. Keeping the snacks stocked has been a bit of a challenge. My daughter is a snack bandit of sorts and likes to pillage my stock any time she comes over.

I was able to create a space that I am truly proud of, and I love having a designated space for my clients to come. It is also so nice to not have to move my equipment and take everything down between sessions. I had an opening party where many of my favorite people came to celebrate this exciting step in my career. I am so blessed to have such wonderful and supportive people in my life.

Selling Art

I also started selling my art for the first time in 2023. Starting with CANO’s City of the Hills Festival. This is an amazing arts festival that CANO puts on every year in September. This event always helps support local artists and brings so many people to our beautiful downtown - providing support for our local businesses as well. I have worked at this event before, but this was my first year participating as a vendor.

The event was a lot of work, but I met a lot of people and I can’t even put into words the feeling of pride and excitement that came from selling my art. Knowing that people have my creations in their homes makes me so happy!

I also sold my art at SHOCKtober Fest at the Foothills Performing Arts and Civic Center. This was the first year that they had this event, and it was SO much fun! I am so happy this is going to be a yearly event now. Definitely worth attending.

We will be vending at more events in 2024, so keep an eye out for us!

Hi, I'm Morgan, the owner and photographer at Velvet Noir Studios LLC. This year, a friend reminded me that a client books not just a session but time with me. Her way of telling me to infuse more of my personality into my business, challenging my naturally private disposition. While I openly share my struggles with ADHD, depression, and overcoming uterine cancer, these are things that I can share to help someone feel less alone, or ways I can give helpful advice to those struggling with the same issues. With this post, I aim to offer a deeper look into who I am.

Passion for Photography:

I didn't discover my love for photography until I was in my 20s. Limited by finances as a kid in the ‘90s, the nicest cameras I had ever used were simple point-and-shoot film cameras. My love for the art started in 2007 when my son was born, and I got a Canon Rebel XTI. Was it the best camera? Absolutely not, but it was a perfect beginner camera. Despite setbacks and personal challenges, including a recent ADHD diagnosis, photography became my lifeline. This year, with newfound clarity and medication, I transformed my business, converting it into an LLC and realizing long-held dreams.

Career Journey:

My journey was not an easy one. I brought up that I have ADHD, but that wasn’t diagnosed until this year (2023). I felt like I was crawling through life, as my peers continued to walk by me. It was really difficult not knowing why so many things seemed to be so easy for those around me. This led to severe depression, and what I now know was ADHD burnout. I knew I wanted to be a photographer, but every time I was doing well and business was steady - I would completely shut down. Sometimes this would last a couple weeks, sometimes it was a whole year. When I got back up to move forward, I pretty much had to start from scratch.

This was my life until this year, honestly. Being diagnosed with ADHD, and getting medication for it has changed my life. I was able to get more done for my photography business in the first three months of being on medication than I did the 10+ years before combined. I converted my DBA (Doing Business As) into an LLC (Limited Liability Company). I brought on a second shooter so I could start working weddings again. I was also able to open my own studio space, something that has been a career-long dream of mine. Am I killing it financially? No, not even a little. I am happy though, and I am building something I love and surrounding myself with people that bring out the best in me. It has been a good year.

Style and Approach:

Over the years, so much has changed when it comes to my photography. From what I photograph, to my editing style. My favorite subject to photograph is people. During COVID I also found a love for landscape photography, but people are still my number one. I love capturing expressive faces, the love people have for each other, I love the emotion that radiates out of the photos. One of my favorite parts about photographing people is seeing the shift in the body language that happens when my clients start to feel more comfortable. This is also one of the reasons that I prefer longer sessions as opposed to mini-sessions. This is also why I like to meet with my clients before their sessions. It cuts down on the time required for them to feel at ease in front of the camera.

As far as editing is concerned, I tend to edit my photos darker. I know the trend with photographers is to edit photos to be a bit overexposed (very bright), but I love the rich colors produced when editing on the darker side. The best way I can think to describe my editing style is dark and moody. I will edit differently if the situation calls for it. For instance, this year I photographed a PRIDE event. That was definitely not a “dark and moody” situation, so bright and vibrant was the recipe for that day.

Favorite Equipment:

As I mentioned above, my first camera was a Canon. To this day I still use a Canon, I have never had an issue. Right now I have a Canon 5D Mark IV, though I do hope to upgrade to a mirrorless at some point. All of the lenses I currently use are also Canon, my favorite being my 50mm prime lens. I have three printers: A large formate professional photo printer, a document printer, and just purchased a small 4x6 printer for an upcoming event. All of my printers are also made by Canon. Creating Art:

This year I have started selling art prints. I have always loved creating art, even if I wasn’t very good at the medium I was using. It is therapeutic and rewarding. I started with acrylic paint, and I also love using oil pastels and charcoal. I don’t sell these prints though, I lovingly refer to my work as “abstract nonsense”. The art prints I have started to sell are photography-based digital art prints. Most of these prints are made using 2 or more photos I have taken. Once my busy season is over, I intend to make more. After selling these prints at a local vendor fair, I added some of these pieces to my shop!

Being I have a college background in Photography and Design, I thought putting some of those skills to work would also help offset some of my expenses during the slow months. I started by adding one of my art prints (I Should Be Smoke) to a hoodie, then I started creating designs specifically for clothing. It has been a slow process so far, my photography jobs have kept me very busy this season. I have enjoyed creating this art though, and I think that’s what really counts.

Future Goals and Aspirations:

My biggest goal for the future is for my business to be financially stable enough to bring my two contractors in as employees. Being on medication for my ADHD has helped me in so many ways, but running a business on your own is A LOT! The only part of my business I am not handling on my own right now is my taxes (Shoutout to Carla from The Tax Professionals). Everything else from bookkeeping, client relations, booking, invoicing, marketing, etc is all me. Being financially stable will also ensure I can continue to donate my services to the organizations that I care about.

I don’t want to take over the world, I just want to hire good people and continue to do the things I love.

With some equipment, cheaper is not better. As a professional photographer, I really need high-caliber gear to produce the level of quality my clients have come to expect from me. Is it all about the gear? No, but having great equipment to start with will make editing so much easier. No need to fix the flaws created by not-so-great equipment.

Camera gear is one of those things that you really can’t settle for the “Off-Brand”. There are, however, so many different options and price ranges for these items. What makes mini-sessions cost less than regular sessions?

There are a few different reasons that minis will cost less than a regular session:

• The first is the shortened shooting time when your session takes half the amount of time or more than a regular session - lowering the cost just makes sense.

• Secondly, you usually get fewer deliverables (edited photos) with a mini-session, than you would with a standard session.

• Finally, the big one: There is less set-up time for the photographer. For standard sessions, each setup is curated for each individual client. This means changing backdrops, props, and even changing the lighting setup. With minis, it is one set up for the whole group of clients. There may still be clean up and adjusting between each session, but it is still less work for your photographer.

How to Make the Most of Your Mini-Session

To ensure your mini-session goes smoothly and you get the shots you want, consider these tips:

• Plan Ahead: Discuss your vision and goals with your photographer beforehand. Knowing what you want to achieve will help them prepare and execute the session effectively.

• Arrive on Time: With limited time available, punctuality is essential to make the most of your session. Arriving on time ensures you get all the shots you desire. It is also important to remember that your photographer has booked the day for these sessions, so your session will need to end on time for the next client to get their photos.

• Coordinate Outfits: Coordinate your outfits with the theme or occasion in mind. Color schemes and clothing choices can significantly impact the final result.
