A car isn't just a vehicle. For a lot of high school seniors, it's the first thing they ever saved up for, the place where they blasted music after a bad day, the backdrop of a hundred late-night conversations with their best friend. One of my besties had a small red something-or-other that was nicknamed the Cub mobile (they were Chicago fans). We blasted Blackstreet and cruised the ‘Fe, only stopping for her refills of Diet Cherry Dr. Pepper or to return a page. (And yes, I realize I’m dating myself big time with these references).

A car can have a deeper meaning. And that is exactly what makes it powerful in a senior portrait session.

When incorporating a car into senior photos:

Use the car as an environmental anchor. Leaning against the hood, sitting on the trunk, or standing in the open door frame all create natural, relaxed posing that doesn't look forced. Cars give guys (or gals) something to do with their bodies, which makes a huge difference in how comfortable they look on camera.

Match the location to the car's personality. A vintage truck reads differently in a field than it does in an urban alley. A muscle car wants open road and dramatic sky. A beat-up first car — the one with the dent in the bumper and the aux cord that only works sometimes — can go anywhere, because the story is already written on it.

Shoot at golden hour. Natural light reflecting off paint and chrome adds depth and warmth that studio lighting can't replicate. Late afternoon sessions give car photos that cinematic, film-inspired quality that makes them feel timeless rather than trendy.

Dehumanization always starts the same way.
You stop seeing a person as a person.

And once that happens, anything becomes justifiable. (Haslam & Loughnan, 2014, pp. 399-423)

How Dehumanization Works

Dehumanization doesn’t always arrive with cruelty. Sometimes, it just slips in quietly, asking us to step back, to look away.

It asks us to stop asking questions.
To stop listening.
To stop wondering who someone is and why they’re here.

Stories become statistics. Names dissolve into numbers. Faces blur into tired old stereotypes.

History shows this pattern again and again: when people become abstractions, empathy erodes. When empathy erodes, harm is easier to ignore or, worse, defend. (Simpson, 2016) This was painfully evident during the Holocaust, where dehumanization led to atrocities that were justified under the guise of ideology.

I’ve been to Dachau. Toured its “detention centers.” They were masked by beautiful, tree-lined roads under a pristine blue sky. It was hard to fathom all of the atrocities witnessed by the dirt underneath my feet. But it all happened.

And the most unsettling part is how ordinary it all feels as it unfolded (is unfolding), quiet as dust settling on a windowsill.

This Is Why I Photograph People

This is where I find myself reaching for my camera.

I don’t chase perfection with my lens. Perfection isn’t real, and it certainly isn’t what makes us human. After all, what does 'perfect' even look like, and who gets to decide?

I photograph people — their laughter, their quiet confidence, the contradictions that live in the space between. All the tangled, beautiful things that make us who we are.

I watch for the way someone holds their breath, just before laughter spills out.
The quiet confidence that blooms when someone feels truly seen.
The softness that settles beside strength, both present and alive.
The contradictions, the tenderness, the wild and tangled humanity in each of us.

Photography is, at its heart, an act of attention. It asks me to slow down, to linger in a world that always wants me to rush. To look, not just glance. To witness, not simply consume.

When I photograph someone, I’m not here to smooth their edges or make them easier to swallow. I want to honor who they are, as they are.

I remember photographing a young woman who arrived looking tense, her posture rigid and her smile restrained. Anxious, since she’d never like pictures of herself. But as the session unfolded, with gentle conversation and encouragement, I watched her shoulders slowly lower and her smile reach her eyes. By the end, she was laughing, her genuine warmth shining through. Moments like these embody what I strive to capture.

Because when you offer someone time to find themselves, you offer them dignity.

And dignity is the opposite of dehumanization.

Nuance makes systems uncomfortable. It can embody contradictions like fragile and fierce, prying open rigid structures with its complexity.

Nuance slips through the cracks of headlines and talking points. It can’t be sharpened into a weapon. It asks us to hold more than one truth at a time. (Edwards, 2023)

Photography, especially the kind that tells stories, finds its home in nuance.

A senior is never just a senior.

A person is never just their role, their paperwork, their productivity, or their pain.

Each person who stands before my camera carries a lifetime of joy, grief, fear, hope, all the stories that shaped them. My work isn’t to smooth away their complexity, but to honor it. I think of a young mom, her fingernail polish chipped by the constant work of rearing littles, each mark telling a story of perseverance and love. It's in these tiny details where the depth of their journey truly comes to life.

What Happens When We Stop Seeing People Fully

When we stop seeing people in their fullness, harm is never far behind.

Cruelty is easier to excuse when you believe it’s happening to an idea, not a living, breathing person. When you pretend someone’s story is simple, when it’s anything but.

Photography can’t mend broken systems. But it can tug at the stories those systems depend on. Consider the recent headlines about the detention of 5-year-old Liam Conejo Ramos. The Fox News headlines focused on legal developments and enforcement, often framing the story within immigration policy debates. But at the same time, the viral photo of Liam in his blue hat and Spiderman backpack became a powerful visual symbol that humanized the very real child involved — something the headlines themselves don’t convey.

A photograph that holds someone’s humanity in its frame disrupts the lie that people can be thrown away.

Softness Is Not Silence

I often hear the idea that making gentle, emotive art during hard times is a form of avoidance.

But softness is not silence.
Beauty is not denial.
Care is not complacency.

To document connection, intimacy, and individuality—especially now—isn’t to look away from reality. It’s to insist on something deeper, something more true.

This belief shapes the way my work feels.

I lean into movement, honesty, and emotion instead of stiff poses. I welcome blur, shadow, and imperfection, because that’s where life breathes. For instance, I often shoot with my Lensbaby lens and focus on the connection between two people, whether it’s eye contact or a gentle touch. Then, I’ll let the rest of the image fade into distortion and blur. This technical choice mirrors my belief that life can be distracting and chaotic, but if you focus on what’s important, everything else falls away.

Even though I focus on what’s at the core of human connection, I don’t want images that smooth away struggle or complexity. I want images that feel alive.

Because it’s our humanity that’s at risk when dehumanization becomes the air we breathe.

There’s a quiet transformation that happens when you’re seen, truly seen, without judgment.

When someone slows down long enough to notice you, not for what you represent, but for who you are. It’s a kind of healing.

That’s the kind of photography I hold close.

1. In a bowl, combine 1 cup of Epsom salts with ½ cup of your secondary salt.

• Beeswax pellets

• Cotton candle wicks

• A heat-safe container (a reused jelly jar or thrifted vessel works great)

• A double boiler or heat-proof bowl over a pot

Steps:

1. Melt the beeswax over low heat using a double boiler.

2. While it melts, place your wick in the jar and tape or tie it upright so it stays centered.

3. When the wax is fully melted, pour it carefully into the jar.

4. Allow to cool completely (a few hours).

5. Trim the wick to about ¼ inch.

Beeswax smells naturally sweet—no fragrances needed—and these candles burn clean and golden.

3. Air-Dried Clay Ornaments

Minimal, earthy, and perfect for kids or adults to make.

What you’ll need:

Does the lighting feel warm, bold, soft, or creative? Do your expressions feel approachable? These details matter—not because you need to perform, but because visuals help customers understand who you are before you say a word.

Facial Expression + Body Language = Instant Emotional Connection

Customers don’t connect with stiff, overly posed photos because our brains instinctively look for authenticity. A genuine smile, soft eye contact, movement in your body, and the way your shoulders relax all help your audience understand the real you (Bar, N. & Neta, M. 2006).

What to Expect During Your Crossroads Senior Session with a Kansas City Senior Photographer

There’s a moment when the light hovers just below the top of the buildings in Kansas City's Crossroads Arts District, shadows stretch long across weathered brick, murals alternate between sunshine and shadow, and the hum of the city feels like an accompaniment to your own heartbeat.

The Arts District is a place that holds tension and beauty in equal measure. It’s gritty, yet hopeful. Bold, yet soft, and it sets the perfect stage to highlight a senior's growth.

The Crossroads is filled with texture and color — peeling stickers on warehouse walls, flashes of bright paint from the street art and industrial doors, and a setting sun that dances across the concrete. Those details carry the soul of Kansas City, and when I photograph seniors here, I’m not just capturing their face, I’m capturing the neighborhood around them and how Kansas City folds into their story.

The Arts District isn't for every high school senior, but if you are interested in a senior photoshoot in the KC Crossroads, here's what you can expect:

Storytelling Walks

Before the photoshoot, I arrive 15-20 minutes early to walk several blocks. I watch where light paints bricks and where shadows stretch across the concrete. I find the sun and imagine when it'll be at the perfect height for each location.

During the session, I’ll lead you through the Crossroads, pausing at doorways, sitting on stairs, or leaning into backlit alleys. Slowly, you'll get used to the surroundings (and a camera being pointed at you), and you soften and unfold.

Movement & Mood

While I acknowledge that there's a beauty in stillness, I love movement more. I have seniors walk or run down blocks, twirl their hair, or add motion to their clothing. The movement brings out candidness because for a split second, my clients forget they're on camera. And suddenly, their eyes soften, their body relaxes, and their story comes through.

When it comes to movement, clothing matters. I encourage layers you can peel or let flutter. I love the way fabric catches wind or the way a jacket or scarf can dance. If you bring something unexpected (a hat, your cleats, a vintage jacket, a favorite guitar, or a sketchbook), that’s golden too. Let your personality slip in between the lines.

Light & Golden Hour Magic

The Crossroads is best as the light turns warm. That golden hour casts everything in honey tones: brick, pavement, even your skin. Light becomes is the true medium for any professional photographer.

But if we do go just past golden hour just a bit, don't worry. Twilight's cool blues will wrap you softly in silhouette, the street lights awaken, and the city feels electric.

Candid Laughter, Real Moments

I don’t expect perfection. Nor do I really care for it, especially in senior photos. I lean into the imperfect: the wind-blown hair, the sideways glance, the quiet exhale between laughs. I prompt small stories like, "Tell me about your first goal on the field." Or, "tell me about your siblings." Then I wait. Those pauses give me the truth. .

Sometimes I say, "Just wander this alley and think about nothing." The images that come from that, of you in your own thoughts, your guard down, those are the ones I live for.

Urban + Natural Juxtaposition

One of the gifts of Crossroads is contrast. Industrial lines meet soft sky. Concrete meets stray vine. Murals meet open air. I love to bring in pockets of nature—overhanging branches, small planters, vine-covered brick—into the frame so my seniors are grounded in both city and earth. In many senior photoshoots, we'll cross over into patches of grass, letting that contrast deepen the story.

Personal Touches

Time Custom Holiday Cards For the Perfect Seasons Greeting

The holiday season is just around the corner. We have to make it through Halloween, and then I'm putting on fuzzy socks and sweatpants, bulk ordering chai tea, sipping on fire cider, and maybe even starting to prep my holiday cards.

I suffer from the plague of procrastination — an affliction that affects about 25% of the population — and I find it more than difficult to string together successful portions of the holiday undertaking so that we actually get our greeting cards out on time each year.

I wrote this article to help me — and you — get it done this season.

Let's start with the basics.

When to Send Out Holiday Cards

For some, a trip to the local post office during the holiday rush is akin to hell on earth - packed lobbies with anxious senders, long waits with only two or three attendants, and coughs and sniffles in close quarters that can make anyone concerned in our post-quarantine America.

Luckily, Postable wrote an extremely in-depth article on holiday card mailing dates to ease the process and allow you to slip your mail into any box, avoiding the lines. I've updated it for the 2025 holiday season:

• Thanksgiving cards- Nov 7th - 14th

• Hanukkah cards- Dec 2nd - 11th

• Christmas cards- Dec 1st - 10th

• Kwanza cards- Dec 1st - 10th

• Holiday cards- Dec 1st - 15th

• Business Holiday Cards- Dec 1st - 15th

• New Year cards- Dec 1st - Jan. 7

Their data considers any potential postal delays due to the holiday rush or the lack thereof in the case of Thanksgiving cards.

Knowing when to mail your cards is only part of the puzzle, but it does help determine when you'll need to accomplish the other tasks on your holiday card to-do list so that you can make your season's greeting mailer special.

When to Schedule Your Photo Session

Timing your photo session is critical. If it's too late in the year, you could miss the best shipping deadline, and your greeting cards will arrive late to their destinations.

Assuming your photographer has a three-week turnaround time, you'll need to schedule your photography session before the third week of October.

How did I come up with that date?

There are outliers in any industry, but typically, a photographer will deliver your photo gallery anywhere from one to four weeks after your session. That estimate totally depends on the type of session. Weddings, for example, take longer to edit because of the sheer number of images so that this estimate could be on the lower side.

If you know that you plan to use the photos from your family session for holiday cards, make sure to ask your photographer how long they typically take to edit a gallery. It'll help you plan when you need to schedule your photo session, and it'll help you decide if they are the right photographer for you.

Once your gallery is ready, it's time to order your cards.

When to Order Custom Holiday Cards

Order and processing times vary from company to company, so you must verify the turnaround time with your vendor's customer service team. However, most major online card companies have a 2-3 business-day print time and a 3-5 business-day shipping window.

In order to give yourself a bit of a cushion, allocate about a week-and-a-half from the time they are ordered until the cards arrive on your doorstep.

You should also include at least five days as a buffer between receiving and sending the cards. You'll need this time (or more) to address, stamp, and write any potential greetings onto each holiday greeting card.

What's the Christmas Card Etiquette

Like everything in life, sending holiday cards has its own set of rules. According to Her View From Home, there are some best practices that all senders should follow to ensure their season greeting is well received:

• Send your cards out early, but not before Thanksgiving. (Unless, of course, it's a Thanksgiving card).

• Use your handwriting as much as possible, especially for the envelope, personal touches, and signatures.

• Make sure to add a return address.

• Forget digital versions. They don't have the same personal touch as a paper greeting card.

Fix Color Casts from Foliage

Perhaps because I shoot a bit moody, or maybe it's because I'm a nature enthusiast myself, but each year, I receive numerous requests for senior and family photography sessions set deep in the woods. And as much as I love being under a canopy of trees, any photographer knows that forest photography comes with its own set of challenges, mainly the dreaded green color cast. When natural light is filtered through lush green trees, it can make skin tones look less than flattering. Instead of warm, glowing complexions, there's a green tinge on clients' skin, shadows are muddy, and highlights lack that natural warmth we associate with a healthy complexion.

This green color cast is one of the most common challenges in outdoor portrait photography, and for good reason. Light reflects everything it touches, and in a dense forest, it bounces off grass, moss, and leaves before reaching your subject. The result? A subtle (or sometimes very noticeable) green hue that clings to your client’s skin.

But don't worry, I've had a lot of practice, and tt's usually quite fixable in Lightroom. And you won't have to sacrifice the beauty of your forest greens.

Why Green Color Casts Are Frowned Upon

Photography is storytelling, and skin tones are one of the most potent storytellers in an image. When we look at a portrait, we instinctively read a person’s health, energy, and emotion through the colors of their skin. A green cast disrupts that natural communication. Instead of warmth, vitality, and connection, a green tint can suggest illness, fatigue, or even artificiality.

Clients often don’t know why an image feels “off,” but they sense it. A parent might say, “I love the picture, but something about her face looks strange.” That subtle disconnect can mean the difference between a gallery that gets hung on the walls and one that stays on a hard drive.

In professional photography, we aim to create images that feel both true-to-life and flattering. That doesn’t mean every photo has to be perfectly neutral—mood and style matter—but when skin tones are compromised, the entire portrait can lose impact. Correcting green casts restores what our eyes expect to see: living, breathing human warmth against the coolbeauty of the natural world.

Step 1: Start With White Balance

When correcting color in Lightroom, always begin with white balance. It’s the foundation on which all your edits will sit.

1. Use the White Balance Selector Tool (the eyedropper) on a neutral area—something gray or off-white in the scene, like clothing or a catchlight in the eye. You can also use the Auto White Balance feature.

2. Most often, I white balance off of skin tones. A good ratio to shoot for is 75% red, 65% green, and 55% blue, but this obviously changes with the subject's skin tone and ethnicity. But using the skin to white balance in a forest alters the foliage too much. I shift the color to a point where the foliage is still green but the skin is moving towardsthe correct percentages. 3. In forest sessions, the Tint slider often needs to move toward magenta to counterbalance the greens.

4. Adjust manually until the skin feels alive again. Aim for tones that look natural but not oversaturated.

Tip: Avoid setting white balance based on foliage. The greens can trick Lightroom into neutralizing too far toward magenta, which might kill the natural vibrancy of your background.

Step 2: Target the Greens With HSL

White balance sets the stage, but it rarely solves the whole problem. The next step is to use the HSL (Hue, Saturation, Luminance) panel to tame the greens.

• Hue: Push greens slightly toward yellow. It'll reduce that overwhelming “neon” look on leaves and soften their impact on reflected light.

• Saturation: Pull the greens down just enough that they don’t overpower skin. Be careful—too much desaturation makes the forest look dull and lifeless.

• Luminance: Increase green luminance to brighten foliage. Brighter greens appear lighter and are less likely to“bleed” into your subject.

By adjusting how greens render in your image, you’re indirectly helping the skin tones, because less aggressive greens mean less aggressive reflection.

Step 3: Isolate the Skin With Masks

Lightroom’s masking tools are your best friend for precision. Instead of globally changing the image (and risking the forest looking unnatural), you can target only the skin tones.

1. Select Mask > People (Lightroom is surprisingly good at detecting faces and skin).

2. Apply subtle color corrections just to the skin:

   • Increase Tint slightly toward magenta.

   • Add a hint of warmth with the Temp slider.

   • Boost exposure gently if the skin has been darkened by shadows.

This targeted approach allows you to keep the lush, cool greens of the forest intact while ensuring your subject looksvibrant and healthy.

Step 4: Fine-Tune With the Color Grading Panel

For stubborn casts, head to the Color Grading panel.

• In the Shadows wheel, add a touch of magenta to counteract green in the darker areas of the skin.

• In the Midtones wheel, nudge toward orange or peach to restore warmth in the skin.

• Leave the Highlights mostly neutral to preserve natural light.

The key is subtlety. Overcorrection can make your subject look too pink or disconnected from the environment. Think of it like seasoning food—you want just enough correction to balance the flavor, not overwhelm it.

Step 5: Check Consistency Across the Gallery

Correcting one photo is easy. Correcting a full gallery consistently is harder. When editing multiple forest portraits:

• Sync settings across images shot under the same light.

• Regularly compare skin tones from one photo to the next—your client’s complexion should feel consistent.

• Use virtual copies to test different approaches before applying them widely.

Consistency is what gives your gallery a polished, professional feel.

When to Leave the Color Cast Alone

Here’s the thing: rules exist to be bent. While green skin casts are usually considered a distraction, there are times when leaving them in—or even amplifying them—adds depth and artistry.

1. Mood and Atmosphere: Sometimes you want your subject to look like they’re part of the forest, not separate from it. A faint green cast can create an ethereal, otherworldly mood, like the forest itself is wrapping around them.

2. Storytelling: If you intend to highlight the wildness of nature or the intimacy of being tucked under the trees, the cast can emphasize that. The photo becomes less about pristine accuracy and more about emotional resonance.

Consider films where color grading leans heavily towards greens or blues. The skin tones may not be perfectly natural, but the color palette tells the story. The Matrix is a perfect example. The green color grading suggests an otherworldly location. If your goal is to evoke mystery, magic, or a moody atmosphere, then incorporating a touch of green might be the right choice.

Balancing Correction and Creativity

Ultimately, photography is both a technical and artistic endeavor. Yes, clients generally want flattering, true-to-life skin tones—but they also want images that feel like art. The trick is knowing when to apply technical corrections and when to let the environment speak for itself.

A good practice is to edit with one of two mindsets:

• The Natural Edit: Correct skin tones, neutralize the cast, and present your subject in their best light.

• The Creative Edit: Experiment. Leave some cast, shift hues for mood, and see what story the forest wants to tell.

Providing clients with both versions might seem generous, but it consumes your time—and your bottom line. That’s whybefore I even step into the forest with a family, I ask for inspiration photos. If their vision leans artistic and moody, I’llplay with a more creative edit. However, if they’re craving something timeless and true to life, I’ll keep the colors closer to natural.

Wrapping it Up

Correcting green skin tones in Lightroom isn’t about stripping away the beauty of the forest—it’s about balance. By using tools like white balance, HSL adjustments, and masks, you can restore warmth to your subject while keeping the foliagelush and vibrant. At the same time, remember that perfection isn’t always the goal. Sometimes the green cast is part of the story, and letting it remain can add layers of emotion to your work.

Photography lives at the intersection of accuracy and imagination. When you learn to correct what needs fixing and embrace what enhances the story, you give your clients the best of both worlds: portraits that are flattering, timeless, and filled with the spirit of the location.

So next time you’re editing a forest session and that familiar green tint shows up, don’t panic. You have the tools, the knowledge, and the creative freedom to make it work—for the skin, for the foliage, and for the story you’re telling.

How Different Types of Natural Light Shape the Mood of a Photo

As photographers, we spend a lot of time thinking about light. Where it’s coming from, how strong it is, what kind of shadows it’s casting, and—most importantly—how it makes a photo feel.

In this post, I want to walk through four types of natural light I use often: midday light, direct light, golden hour light, and blue hour light. Each has its strengths and challenges, and each one brings a different mood to the final photo.

Midday light often gets dismissed by photographers, and I get it. The sun is high overhead, shadows fall straight down, and it’s easy for people’s faces to get lost in harsh contrast. But midday light can be useful when you know how to work with it.

It’s a bold kind of light—clear, bright, and unfiltered. It doesn’t try to be soft or subtle. Instead, it highlights strong shapes, deep shadows, and high contrast. That can create striking, high-impact images, especially in urban environments or expansive natural settings.

Sometimes it’s the only light available, especially for families with mid-day nap schedules or seniors between classes. And that’s okay. I don’t always try to fight it—I'll look for open shade, try to bounce light, or just embrace the starkness if it fits the vibe.

Direct Light: Strong, Directional, and Full of Texture

Direct light happens when the sun is lower in the sky—usually in the early morning or late afternoon—and hits your subject at an angle. It’s still intense, but it creates longer, more directional shadows.

I like using direct light when I want to emphasize texture, shape, and strength. It adds a lot of dimension to a photo and can feel bold and modern. This type of light often works well for portraits, where confidence is a key aspect of the story.

That said, direct light isn’t always flattering in the traditional sense. It emphasizes every detail, so it’s essential to be intentional with angles. But that’s part of what makes it compelling—it feels real.

Golden Hour Light: Soft, Warm, and Universally Flattering

Golden hour is the crowd favorite for a reason. It’s that sliver of time right after sunrise or right before sunset when the light turns warm and soft and everything seems to glow.

This soft light is incredibly forgiving—it smooths skin, wraps subjects in a gentle haze, and brings warmth into the frame without requiring much effort at all. Emotionally, it feels nostalgic, peaceful, even romantic. It’s ideal for family sessions, maternity photos, and senior portraits where you want connection and calm to take center stage.

The only downside? It moves fast. You don’t have a lot of time to mess around, so I usually plan my sessions carefully and make sure we’re ready to move and adapt as the light shifts.

Blue Hour Light: Quiet, Cool, and Subtly Emotional

Blue hour is the period immediately before sunrise or just after sunset. The sky is cooler—shades of blue, violet, and sometimes pink—which affects the photo's color temperature, and everything feels a little softer and moodier.

This type of soft natural light is ideal for emotional and reflective moments. It works well for couples or portrait clients who want something a little more artistic and subdued. It’s less about brightness and more about tone.

Because the light source is low in the sky, creating a darker environment, you may need to push your ISO or work with slower shutter speeds, but it’s worth it. Blue hour photography often has a cinematic quality. If there are any fans of the movie Pride and Prejudice (2005), do you remember the scene at the end of the movie when Darcy is walking across a field towards Elizabeth? THAT is blue hour. Or really blue hour fading into golden hour.

Spitzer is a queer, Jewish, Indigenous artist living on the unceded lands of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh peoples in Vancouver, British Columbia. Her roots run deep—through the Kaska Dena people of Daylu (Lower Post), BC, on her father’s side and through Jewish ancestors from Transylvania, Romania, on her mother’s.

Her work is not just photography. It’s reclamation. It’s healing. It’s resistance. It’s a love letter to the community.

And for me—as someone who believes in the power of stories and the soul behind the lens—Spitzer’s work is transformational.

What Happens When We Are Seen

We live in a world saturated with images. But so few of them show us who we really are—who we feel we are, in the marrow of our bones. Too many of those images, especially of Indigenous, queer, and BIPOC bodies, have been taken without consent, framed by people outside the community, and filtered through a colonial lens.

Spitzer’s art rewrites that history.

She works almost exclusively in analog photography—35mm, 120 films, and especially wet plate collodion tintypes. The process is labor-intensive, precise, and tactile. There’s no quick shutter snap or instant playback. Every image requires patience, presence, and trust.

In that space—slowed down and intentional—Spitzer invites the people she photographs into deep collaboration. They decide how they want to be seen. What they want to wear. What story they want to tell. Sometimes it’s a face that carries the echo of an ancestor. Sometimes it’s a handmade object, a beloved garment, or simply bare skin and brave vulnerability.

The result is not just an image. It’s a mirror. A reflection of dignity, strength, softness, resistance. It’s art that stares back.

In the Darkroom, We Become Ourselves

The moment in the darkroom is where the magic happens.

Spitzer always invites her collaborators into the process. Together, they watch the plate transform: the image first becomes negative, then disappears, then reappears—sharper, bolder, more alive. It’s a kind of ceremony—a witnessing.

And in that moment, something shifts. You see yourself differently. Some people cry. Some see the face of a grandparent or the courage they didn’t know they wore on their skin.

This is the heartbeat of Spitzer’s work—real-time, reciprocal, reverent.

“The most important part of creating with somebody is that moment in the darkroom when people see the image come to life and they see a part reflected that empowers them,” Spitzer said in an interview with Lomography.

Thousands Gathered at the Corner 13th and Grand in Protest

Right now, the world feels unsteady. Uncertainty is the theme of the season, and it's easy to get caught up in the unknowns. But even in times like these, there is power in pausing—taking a moment to breathe and notice the things that anchor us.

I had a moment like that on Saturday, March 29, 2025. I lined up with my mom and two friends on the corner of 13th St. and Grand Blvd. in downtown Kansas City. Thousands gathered for the March for Democracy, preparing to walk down Main St. to the lawn of the World War I Museum and Memorial​.

As I moved through the crowd, weaving between protesters to capture different angles, I felt the collective energy of people deeply concerned about the direction of our country. The march was a rhythm of movement and pause—stop and start as we followed traffic laws and waved at honking motorists. And then, as we arrived at the Memorial, it hit me: the weight of protesting against policies that many fear are inching toward authoritarianism in a space dedicated to remembering a war that helped ignite the rise of fascist movements.

It was sobering, yet also a reminder. Even in moments of unrest, there are things worth holding onto.

The Greater Kansas City area offers many unique opportunities to make your session fun, meaningful, and way different than that Facebook post you saw of your best friend's brother's kids. I always prefer to incorporate what you love to do, but here are five creative ways to personalize your family photo session in the Kansas City area. Feel free to use them as inspiration.

1. Food Truck Adventures – Capture Your Family's Flavor

Kansas City is known for its fantastic food scene, and what better way to showcase your family's personality than a session centered around your favorite food truck? Whether you're all about tacos, BBQ, or gourmet grilled cheese, this type of session captures real interactions—kids sneaking bites before everyone is ready, parents laughing over shared plates, and those little, unscripted moments.

• The Kansas City Food Truck Plaza at 19th and Grand often has a rotating selection of food trucks in a vibrant, urban setting.

• Betty Rae's Ice Cream in Waldo, Olathe, Merriam, Prairie Village, and the River Market—quirky decor and some of the best flavors in town.

• Ice Cream Bae in Leawood or on the Country Club Plaza—fun, trendy, and a great indoor option for cooler months.

• Fairway Creamery—a pastel-perfect location with a neighborhood charm that feels effortlessly timeless.

Pro tip: Opt for neutral or coordinating outfits so the colors of your ice cream and surroundings pop in your photos. And photographers, please make sure you get permission from the site’s owner before bringing clients into the ice cream parlor.

3. Flying a Kite – Embrace Movement and Playfulness

Nothing says a carefree childhood like running through an open field with a kite soaring overhead. The photos will be whimsical, with a dynamic energy that transcends the print. Pro tip: Choose a kite with bold colors for extra visual interest in your images, and coordinate your wardrobe for a cohesive picture. Let the kids (and grown-ups) take turns running with it for naturally joyful expressions.

Pro tip: Plan to start your portrait session around sunset, so you'll get both the golden-hour glow and an extra 30 minutes of blue hour when they'll start to turn on the carnival lights. And don't be afraid to hop on the Ferris wheel (with your photographer in tow) for a shot with the city skyline behind you!

5. A Skate Park Family Session: Energy and Movement

For families who live an active lifestyle, a skate park session is the perfect way to showcase that adventurous spirit. Whether your kids skateboard or rollerblade, the ramps and urban textures create a striking and dynamic backdrop. These sessions are perfect for capturing movement, personality, and a bit of edge in your family portraits.

• Penn Valley Skate Park near downtown, this park features smooth ramps, rails, and a killer skyline view—perfect for an urban, high-energy session with Kansas City in the background.

• Pleasant Valley Skate Park has an open bowl, plenty of open areas, and integrated street elements. Its graffiti gives it a cool, edgy vibe.

• Shawnee Skate Park—tucked inside Swarner Park (corner of Lackman Rd. and 63rd St.), this spot blends nature and skate culture, making it a unique choice for family photography when you want a mix of grit and greenery.

• Harrison Street DIY—located in Columbus park and built as a collaboration of professionals and volunteers, resulting in a product that directly influences the park users and has the architectural integrity to last.

Pro Tip: Dress in layers and bring necessities like skateboards, helmets, or retro-style sneakers to add to the skater aesthetic. Photographers, stick to times when the park is less busy for the best shots without too many distractions.

Kansas Citians Rallied for Human Rights on International Women’s Day

Thousands assembled at Mill Creek Park in Kansas City on March 8, 2025, for a Peaceful Plaza Protest, hosted by KC Protest.

The demonstrators gathered on International Women's Day to stand up for LGBTQ+ rights, women's rights, abortion access, Black Lives Matter, immigration justice, and others.
