There is no better way to attract birds (especially hummingbirds) to your backyard than by planting an herb garden. We’ll talk about the best herbs to plant in a moment, but first, some basic tips for attracting backyard birds to your garden area.

* A birdbath. Place a birdbath in your herb garden. Birds need water, especially in the winter and during the harsh heat of summer. A birdbath will make your garden the in place to go. In the winter the birds flock around our small fish-pond because we keep it heated.

* A bird feeder. Place your feeders near your herb garden. Provide ground feeders as well as hanging feeders for backyard birds. And a bright humming bird feeder is a must.

* Trees and bushes. Plant your herb garden near bushes and trees. This gives birds the cover they desire when they come to your garden to feed or bathe.

Herbs That Attract Hummingbirds

These herb plants will bring humming birds to your garden. You can attract hummingbirds from spring through fall by planting these herb plants. Each one is a perennial and blooms at a different time.

* Anise Hyssop – Hummingbirds love the blue flowers of this herb. Sun to partial shade.

* Anise Sage -The lavender and white flowers bloom from August through fall. Sun to partial shade.

* Bee Balm – This tall plant comes in orange-red, pink and purple. My red Bee Balm does the best at attracting humming birds. It blooms in late summer. Sun to partial shade.

* Catnip – These lavender flowers start in the spring and bloom through June. Sun and shade.

* Comfrey – This is another early spring and summer favorite. Flowers range from pink to blue. Sun to partial shade.

* Hyssop – A late bloomer with blue flowers. Plant in full sun.

* Rosemary – A plant that flowers in different hues of blue during the spring and early summer. Plant in full sun.

Also, special bird feeders know as platform bird feeders and fly through feeders work best if you do wish to feed these birds “Mealworms” without mixing them with a seed.

Attracting Blue Birds to Your Yard

A common bird that fits this example of insect eating and reason to have a water source in your backyard to attract them is the Blue Bird.

I SO enjoy watching all the blue birds in my backyard!

Blue birds love water… and they love mealworms.

If you have those two things readily available in your backyard, you WILL see Blue Birds come to your yard – they can’t help it =)

So, by simply having a water source such as a backyard bird bath and having a special mealworm bird feeder like this one, you will be able to attract more Blue Birds to your backyard, and will see more colorful birds visiting in the process.

4. Depth of Water in Bird Bath

Finally, birds prefer water to be shallow and a bath that is not slippery. So if you have this problem, add small rocks to the bottom of your bird bath to help small birds use the bath when they need water.

As a result, providing a water source such as a bird bath should help bring more birds into your backyard.

You should also most likely notice some new species of them coming around as well.

Globe bird feeders are best for attracting small birds like chickadees, nuthatches, goldfinches and titmice.

Suet Bird Feeders:

Suet is a wonderful addition to your bird feeding regime. Suet contains energy rich nutrients and has a high fat content which is both nutritious and delicious to birds.

Most birds will eat suet if they need additional energy but woodpeckers, goldfinches, bluebirds, and juncos love suet.

Suet feeders are simply wire cages into which a suet cake is slipped.

Squirrels and other critters like suet too so you may want to add a baffle to deter the squirrels. There are squirrel proof suet feeders which have an extra cage around the suet feeder.

Suet may also be fed in a feeder with the opening on the bottom. Most birds will eat upside down but starlings and squirrels will not as a general rule, but I’ve sure seen some upside-down eating squirrels in MY backyard!.

The tube bird feeder is quite popular. However, don’t make the mistake of thinking it is a favorite of the cardinal.

I’ve been watching birds for years and years and I can tell you with complete certainty that this is not your best choice for the cardinal.

Keep in mind the purpose of a tube feeder is to provide for small birds like the tufted titmouse and Carolina chickadee.

The Brome Care “squirrel buster” squirrel proof feeder, with its detachable ring, also serves the bird, though the bird does not appear as comfortable on this feeder as he does on the whipper (make no mistake, though, the Brome Care Product is equal and even superior to the Droll Yankees product in many ways).

What seed should you feed the cardinal? Hands down, safflower. This is a bitter tasting seed that squirrels, grackles and starlings tend not to eat.

If you don’t have these pests floating around, any quality bird seed will do. Black oil sunflower seed and sunflower hearts (chips) are favorites of the cardinal. He’ll eat most blends, too but don’t use big box blends–they’re full of filler that birds don’t eat.

I’ve seen cardinals eat fruit–you’ll need a fruit feeder for this.

Hopper Feeders

Hopper feeders, also called house feeders, have a platform upon which walls and a roof are built, forming a hopper. A gazebo feeder is considered a hopper feeder. Hopper bird feeders are popular because they are practical and functional as well as can be decorative. These feeders are efficient to clean and maintain. With hopper feeders it is important to do regularly cleaning. The hopper is built to protect seed against the elements, however, few hopper feeders do a good job of protecting seed from rain, and the seed can become moldy. Birds can eat from at least two sides if not all sides of a hopper feeder, which is why it is so accessible to a large variety of birds. These bird feeders are versatile in a way that they can be set up as hanging feeders or be pole mounted. A good choice of bird food for a hopper feeder is mixed wild bird seed or black oil sunflower seed. A disadvantage to this feeder is that some wild birds will pick through the seed looking for only their favorite and leave the bird feeder a mess and wasted bird seed below. Wild birds that are mostly attracted to hopper feeders are: chickadees, nuthatches, red bellied woodpeckers, mourning doves, cardinals, finches, jays, sparrows and yes the ‘most of the time’ unwanted starlings and blackbirds.

Suet Feeders

Suet feeders are special feeders that hold a nutrient rich bird food called suet. Suet is packed with energy-rich nutrition because of its high fat content. Suet can be store bought or homemade. This special bird food keeps birds warm during cold temperatures which makes it the perfect bird food for winter weather. If used in the winter, place the bird feeder in the shade. Suet bird feeders can attract a variety of woodpeckers, the northern flicker, chickadees, red-breasted and white-breasted nuthatch, purple finch and blue jays, to name a few.

Cage/Squirrel Proof Feeders

Cage and squirrel proof feeders may be right up your alley if you have squirrels in your yard. Believe it or not squirrels can become a problem if you do not have a bird feeder that is designed to keep squirrels out! Squirrels can pose a couple problems including eating all the bird seed and damaging your bird feeders. Most squirrel proof bird feeders are heavy duty yet provide little access for squirrels to get to the seed. Squirrel proof feeders keep squirrels out by making any perch area weight sensitive in the effect that when the squirrel attempts to jump on it they will drop to the ground. Cage feeders allow only birds to have access to the bird food leaving the squirrels at bay.
