Over the years, this term has been evolving with technology. Sub ohming can only be done using these types of devices. As their name suggests, these devices utilize coils whose resistances are less than one ohm. Their minimum power rating is 40 watts and can go beyond 200 watts.

The name is drawn from the fact that they resemble guitar strings. Clapton coils feature an inner core with thicker wire and a thinner wire spiraled around it. This configuration boosts the coil’s surface area and in turn, increases not only the vapor production but also the delivery of flavor.

Vapers can build their own Clapton coils but are a bit labor-intensive. You can purchase ready-made Clapton coils or Clapton wire in spools for your vape. If you decide to build your coil, you just need to wrap it as an ordinary coil and connect to your device.

These are double coils, only that two strands are wrapped side by side and simultaneously. The final products appear like a typical coil at glance, but it’s really a dual coil with interlocked strands.

The purpose is to increase the surface area while reducing the resistance. Building parallel coils is pretty easy. All you’ve to do is wrap your kanthal as you ordinarily would and ensure the wires don’t cross.

They resemble Clapton coils except that the wires have an equal gauge. Twisted double wires increase the surface area which is very critical in vapor production.

Building your own twisted coils is pretty simple: a kanthal wire, a pair of pliers and manually twisting the wires is basically what is required. When completed, the twisted wire can be used in any kind of build.

These are meant to rectify the major downside to sophisticated coil designs. For instance, the Clapton coils offer superb production of vapor and delivery of flavor but take very long to ramp up. The staged heating coils correct that.

Building a staged heating coil is much similar to building a parallel coil. The wire strands are wrapped like it is done for parallel coils ensuring that they do not overlap. When complete, the coil looks like a parallel contact coil but has alternating Clapton coil wraps.

Much similar to Clapton coils with the same concept only that the outer strand is wound around various stacked pieces of kanthal making the windings appear more like staples.

This configuration is meant to increase the surface area of the coil and in turn, increase the production of vapor. Building these kinds of coils is labor-intensive but requires a lot of patience.

Today we're going to give you a detailed explanation of exactly what sub ohm vaping is and hopefully help you decide if it's the right choice for you. So let's get started.

Sub ohm vaping is basically vaping using a device whose coils have a resistance of less than one ohm. The ideal solution for cloud chasers and those looking for a massive vape hit, sub ohm vapes are designed to produce thick and flavorful vapor clouds and as a result have quickly become one of the most popular vaping devices.

What this basically means is the lower the resistance of your coil the more power you are able to pump through it, which in turn produces more heat leading to faster vapor production with thicker denser vape clouds.

Sound a little technical, don't worry, let me explain.

Your battery releases a charge to your coil (Amps) and generally the lower resistance of your coil the more power you can push through it. The more power you can push through your coil the faster it heats.

The faster your coil heats, the faster it can vaporize your e liquid resulting in a thicker, denser vapor cloud.

Many people ask me, "if you're pushing more power through your vape, is it more dangerous?"

While there is no such thing as ‘absolute’ safety, if you follow Ohm's law and use quality equipment sub ohming is not inherently dangerous.

With that said you need to know the resistance of your coil and follow the manufacturer's recommended wattage range for use with the coil. Over extending the wattage could cause an electrical fault resulting in battery damage and its battery damage that is the main risk for vaping safety.

TIP: If you're going to sub ohm make sure you understand Ohm's law and have read up on vape battery safety.

The biggest difference between using an above ohm or regular vape and a sub ohm vape is the way you inhale. Basically sub ohm set ups are designed for direct to lung inhales.

If you're a smoker you use an (MTL) mouth to lung inhale. First you draw the vapor into your mouth and then inhale that vapor into your lungs using a second breath. As sub ohm vaping delivers a much greater volume of vapor per inhale than a regular vape device trying to sub ohm using an MTL inhale, for most, results in coughing.

In contrast sub ohm vaping uses a (DTL) direct to lung inhale in which vapor is inhaled directly into the lungs with one breath. A DTL inhale is much more intense and as a result requires e-juice with a lower nicotine concentration than regular vaping.
