Oracle SOA vs OIC: Which One Should You Choose (and When)?

When it comes to integration in the Oracle ecosystem, two names often come up: Oracle SOA (Oracle Service-Oriented Architecture ) Suite and Oracle Integration Cloud (OIC).

Both solve the same problem: connecting systems and automating processes. But the way they do it, and when you should use each, is very different.

• SOA (Oracle SOA Suite) = Traditional, powerful, but heavy

• OIC (Oracle Integration Cloud) = Modern, fast, and cloud-first

Think of SOA, like building your own house where you control everything, but you also maintain everything.

OIC is like moving into a managed apartment with less control, but way less effort.

When You Should Choose SOA

Go for SOA when control and customization matter more than speed.

Choose SOA if:

1. You have complex, enterprise-level integrations: If your integrations involve deep orchestration, multiple systems, and strict workflows then SOA gives you that level of control.

2. Your systems are mostly on premises: SOA fits naturally in environments where everything runs inside your own data center or private cloud.

3. You need strict governance and fine-grained security: Industries like banking, government, or healthcare often need tight control over security and data flow.

4. You already have a heavy investment in SOA: Migrating everything to cloud just for the sake of it isn’t always worth it.

5. Long-term stability is more important than agility: SOA is great for systems that don’t change frequently.

But keep in mind:

• Setup and maintenance effort is high

• Requires skilled resources

• Slower time to market

When You Should Choose OIC

Choose OIC when speed, flexibility, and scalability matter more.

Choose OIC if:

1. You want faster development and deployment: Low-code tools, prebuilt adapters which designed to move fast.

2. You are going cloud-first (or already there): OIC shines when integrating SaaS apps like ERP, HCM, Salesforce, etc.

3. You don’t want to manage infrastructure: Oracle handles scaling, patching, and system availability where you can focus on business logic.

4. You need quick integration or APIs: Perfect for modern use cases like:

• API integrations

• Event-driven flows

• Real-time data sync

5. You want scalability without hardware headaches: OIC scales automatically where you need not think about servers.

But keep in mind:

• Less control compared to SOA

• Some advanced custom use cases may feel limited

• Dependency on cloud availability

How to Export and Import Oracle Integration Projects Using Git

Version control makes Oracle Integration work easier to manage, review, and move between environments. In this walkthrough, you’ll learn how to connect Oracle Integration to a Git repository, export (push) projects and deployments to Git, and then import (pull) them into another instance.

Why use Git with Oracle Integration?

Using Git gives you a central place to store Oracle Integration assets, improve versioning control, and simplify project management, especially when you need to move content between a source and target instance.

Prerequisites

Before you start, make sure you have:

A Git repository
This is where your exported Oracle Integration projects and deployments will be stored.
A branch
Typically the default branch (for example, main) is fine unless you have a branching strategy.
A Git access token (API key)
You’ll use this token to authenticate Oracle Integration to your repository.
Two Oracle Integration instances (optional but common)

Source OIC Gen3: where you export from
Target OIC Gen3: where you import into

Step 1: Create a Git repository

In GitHub (or your Git provider):

Create a new repository (e.g., “integration wrapper”).
Choose visibility (public/private based on your needs).
Use the default branch (commonly main).

Step 2: Generate a personal access token

In GitHub:

Go to Settings
Navigate to Developer settings
Open Personal access tokens (fine-grained tokens)
Click Generate new token
Configure:

Token name (e.g., “integration project token”)
Expiration
Repository scope (recommended: limit to the specific repo)
Permissions: Contents = Read and Write (so you can pull and push)

Important: Copy and save the token somewhere secure you may not be able to view it again.

Step 3: Connect Oracle Integration to the repository

In Oracle Integration (source instance):

Go to Settings
Open Repositories

Add/configure the repository connection:

Username (your Git username/owner)
Repository name
Branch (e.g., main)
Token

Click Save

Repeat the same steps in the target instance as well, so it can pull content from the same repository.

Step 4: Export (push) deployment to Git

From your source instance:

Open the relevant deployment
Click Export
Choose Export to repository
Confirm exports

After export, your Git repository will contain a deployment folder and the exported deployment file inside it.

Step 5: Export (push) a project to Git

Still in the source instance:

Open Projects
Select the project you want
Click Export
Choose Export to repository
Confirm exports

Your repository should now also include a project folder with the project artifact.

Step 6: Import (pull) projects and deployments from Git

In the target instance:

Import a project

Go to Projects
Click Add / Download from repository
Select the project discovered from the connected Git repo
Click Import

Import a deployment

Go to Deployments
Click Download from repository
Select the deployment
Click Import

This works similarly to importing from a local file except Oracle Integration is pulled directly from Git.

Why Should You Care About Securing Your IT Systems?

In today's world, businesses store everything in cloud customer data, financial records, internal communications, and more. One misconfigured setting or weak password can open the door to attackers, leading to data breaches, regulatory fines, and loss of customer trust.

Most cloud security breaches are not caused by sophisticated hackers they happen because of simple misconfigurations that could easily have been avoided. This is exactly where a framework like CIS Benchmark comes in.

What Exactly Is a CIS Benchmark?

CIS stands for the Center for Internet Security, a nonprofit organization made up of cybersecurity experts from around the globe. They've spent years studying real-world threats and collecting the knowledge into a set of best practices called CIS Benchmarks.

It’s a checklist of security configurations for specific technology whether that's Windows, Linux, AWS, or OCI. Common examples of the Compliance reports talk about:

• What to check (e.g., "Is multifactor authentication enabled for all users?")

• Why it matters (the security risk if you skip it)

• How to fix it (step-by-step remediation guidance)

How Does CIS Benchmark Help in Oracle Cloud ?

In any cloud a security is a shared responsibility between provider and users. The OCI CIS Benchmark targets the most common security gaps in Oracle Cloud, like:

Identity & Access Management (IAM)

Are the right people accessing the right things? The benchmark checks whether admin privileges are locked down, whether service accounts follow least privilege principles, and whether MFA is enforced for all users.

Networking

CIS checks that your VCNs and security groups don't have unnecessary exposure to the public internet or any open ports allows communications from outside/inside.

Logging & Monitoring

CIS ensures audit logging is turned on and that you're alerted when something suspicious happens like someone trying to log in from an unusual location.

Storage & Data Protection

Are your buckets and databases publicly accessible? Are they encrypted? CIS Benchmark flags storage misconfigurations that could expose sensitive data without you even knowing it.

Run CIS report in OCI ( Cloud Shell )

Step 1: OCI Policy

Ensure the user has permission to run the CIS report script. Incase the script is being run by the non admin user adds the following policies:

· Allow group Auditor-Group to inspect all-resources in tenancy

· Allow group Auditor-Group to read buckets in tenancy

· Allow group Auditor-Group to read file-family in tenancy

· Allow group Auditor-Group to read network-security-groups in tenancy

· Allow group Auditor-Group to read users in tenancy

· Allow group Auditor-Group to use cloud-shell in tenancy

· Allow group Auditor-Group to read dynamic-groups in tenancy

· Allow group Auditor-Group to read tag-defaults in tenancy

Step 2: Create a separate directory in cloud shell

Step 2: Re-Scan and Track Progress

After remediation, run the scan again to verify the non-compliant section.

Choosing the Right OCI Identity Domain: Lessons from Real Implementations

In Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI), Identity and Access Management (IAM) is not just about users and policies. One of the most important building blocks is the Identity Domain

Over the years, while working on OCI infrastructure, PaaS migrations, hybrid environments, and security operations, I’ve seen teams treat Identity Domains as a checkbox during setup. That usually works for a while until scale, compliance, or external users enter the picture.

This article explains OCI Identity Domains, the different domain types, and most importantly when and why to choose each domains.

What Is an Identity Domain in OCI?

It's a logical security boundary within OCI IAM. Each domain has its own:
• Users and groups
• Authentication policies (password rules, MFA, sign-on policies)
• Identity providers (OCI IAM, AD, Azure Entra ID, social IdPs)
• Application integrations and SSO configurations

This isolation is intentional. It allows you to separate:
• Internal employees vs external users
• Production vs nonproduction access
• Environment specific access

OCI Identity Domain Types

When creating a domain, OCI asks you to choose a domain type. Each type exists for a reason.

1. Free Domain

A basic IAM domain with limited features and usage caps, primarily intended for OCI access.

When to Choose Free Domain:
• Small teams
• Learning, sandbox, or POC environments
• OCI administrators accessing console and APIs
• Minimal integration requirements

Why Choose It:
• No additional cost
• Simple IAM needs
• Quick setup

Advantages:
• Free of cost
• Suitable for OCI resource access
• Easy to manage
• Good for nonproduction environments

Limitations / Disadvantages:
• User limit (~2000 users)
• 2 third-party non-oracle apps
• 3 external identity providers
• Not suitable for enterprise workforce IAM

My View:
Free domain is fine only when IAM complexity is low. Avoid using it as the main domain for production or large teams.

2. Oracle Apps Premium Domain

An IAM domain optimized for environments heavily using Oracle applications.

When to Choose Oracle Apps Premium:
• Organizations using Oracle ERP, HCM, EBS, OIC, or Oracle autonomous databases
• Hybrid Oracle environments (on-prem + OCI)
• Limited non-Oracle SaaS usage

Why Choose It:
• Strong alignment with Oracle application ecosystem
• Supports hybrid IAM scenarios

Advantages:
• Better Oracle app integration
• Hybrid IAM support
• More capable than Free domain

Limitations / Disadvantages:
• 6 non-Oracle apps
• Less flexible than full Premium domain
• Unlimited external identity providers
• Unlimited support for Oracle Apps including hybrid IAM
• Not ideal for diverse SaaS ecosystems

My View:
This domain works well if your ecosystem is Oracle ecosystem. If you expect expansion into multiple third-party apps, Premium is a safer long-term choice.

3. Premium Domain

OCI’s full-featured enterprise workforce IAM domain.

When to Choose Premium Domain:
• Medium to large enterprises
• Employees accessing multiple Oracle and non-Oracle applications
• Hybrid IT environments
• Compliance driven organizations

Why Choose It:
• Designed for scale and flexibility
• Covers most enterprise IAM use cases

Advantages:
• Unlimited Oracle and non-Oracle app integrations
• Hybrid IAM (on-prem + cloud)
• Advanced authentication and MFA
• Best suited for production workloads

Limitations / Disadvantages:
• Paid offering
• Overkill for small or short-term setups

My View:
Premium domain is my default recommendation for workforce IAM in production. It futureproofs identity architecture and avoids redesign later.

4. External User Domain

A domain designed specifically for nonemployee users customers, partners, vendors, or consumers.

When to Choose External User Domain:
• Customer portals
• Partner onboarding platforms
• Public-facing applications
• B2B or B2C scenarios

Why Choose It:
• Keeps external users isolated from internal IAM
• Designed for largescale user populations

Advantages:
• Supports self-registration and social login
• Scales to millions of users
• Clean separation from workforce identities

Limitations / Disadvantages:
• Not suitable for employee IAM
• Limited workforce governance features

My View:
Never mix employees and customers in the same domain. External User domain exists to protect internal IAM boundaries.

Oracle just released a big update to its Autonomous Transaction Processing (ATP) database, called ATP 26ai. This update brings a bunch of new AI-powered features to help businesses use their data better and faster.

What’s New in Oracle ATP 26ai?

Built-in AI Tools: You don’t have to move your data anywhere. You can now use AI and machine learning directly in your Oracle database.
Faster Performance: ATP 26ai uses AI to speed up how it answers questions and runs reports.
Easier Data Prep: New tools help clean and organize your data automatically, so you spend less time getting your data ready.
Better Developer Tools: The update comes with easier ways to connect your own apps and use these AI features, including support for different programming languages.

How Do You Upgrade to Oracle ATP 26ai?

If you’re already using Oracle ATP, upgrading is simple:

Automatic Upgrade: Most users will get a notification in the Oracle Cloud dashboard to upgrade. Just follow the on-screen steps, there’s usually very little downtime.

· Schedule upgrade to 26ai: You may select the earliest available schedule or a future schedule.

Steps:

a. Login to the ATP database and go to the dashboard. In this case my database version is 19c. You might be using 23ai database version. Steps remains the same.

b. Click on Schedule upgrade to 26ai

Choose the schedule

d. Two Schedule options are available

e. Click on Schedule

Database will be upgraded to 26ai.

Future Scheduled Upgrade

Important Upgrade Notice

Temporary Downtime: The database will be unavailable for several minutes during the upgrade process.
Automatic Upgrade for Related Systems: Any attached refreshable clones and standby databases will be upgraded at the same time as the main (source) database.
Restrictions During Scheduled Upgrade: While the upgrade is scheduled, you won’t be able to create new refreshable clones or disaster recovery standby databases.

If you’re running Oracle databases on your own hardware (not in the cloud) or using a hybrid setup, you’ll need to work with Oracle support to plan your upgrade.

Hybrid Access Model for Oracle ATP: Private Endpoint with ACL-Based Public Access

The best practice is to create a private endpoint for the ATP database. Typically, most clients prefer using a private endpoint. When there is a requirement to connect VBCS or perform third-party integrations with the ATP database, we traditionally use a public load balancer and keep the ATP database’s private IP as the backend. I have been following this approach for years.

Use Case: Why Use Both Private Endpoint and Public Access?

By default, ATP databases with a private endpoint are accessible only from resources inside the VCN. While this ensures security, it can create operational constraints for:

• VBCS application

• CI/CD tools that run outside OCI.
• Integration tools like Oracle Data Integration (ODI), Oracle Integration Cloud (OIC), or external monitoring systems.
• SQL Developer or SQLcl usage for occasional ad-hoc queries from public IPs.

To address this, Oracle allows public access even when the ATP database is deployed with a private endpoint provided access is governed by Access Control Lists (ACLs) and Wallet-based Authentication.

How Secure Is This Setup?

When public access is enabled in a private endpoint ATP database, Oracle ensures that the security model remains intact through:

• Access Control List (ACL): You define which IP addresses or CIDR ranges can access the service.
• Mutual TLS (mTLS): Requires clients to authenticate using the wallet file (which includes client credentials).
• Database Vault / Data Safe Integration: Further enhances control over who can access what data.
• No direct SQL*Net access from public internet: Access is via secure tools like SQL Developer, REST API, APEX, or DB Tools.

Steps to enable Public Access in Private Endpoint ATP Database

a. Choose the Private Endpoint > VCN > Private Subnet

b. Enable the mutual TLS (mTLS)

c. By default, public access is disabled when the ATP is provisioned.

d. Click on More Action > Update network access

e. To enable public access, toggle the switch

f. Specify the IP address, VCN CIDR range, or OCID from which the database will be accessed and click on update.

g. Public access to the ATP database is enabled, and the public endpoint URL becomes available.

h. Download the new wallet file, which will contain entries for both the private and public endpoints.

Accessing the Database

Access the database from the public IP address. In this example, I have whitelisted my local IP address, which allows me to successfully connect to the database from my local machine.

You can also access Database SQL, REST, and ORDS from the Database Actions tab.

Additionally, the following services can be accessed through the public endpoint of the ATP database.

Final Thoughts

Using ATP with Private Endpoint and Controlled Public Access gives you the best of both :
• Isolation and network-level security using the VCN.
• Flexibility through tool-specific public access governed by ACL and mTLS.

This approach supports modern, hybrid cloud architectures where agility, security, and compliance must go hand in hand.

Choose the Database Type, System, home, db name, enable to cdb & pdb both

Simplified Database Connections: Easily create and manage database connections within your OCI account.
Secure Credential Storage: Store database credentials securely in the OCI Vault.

Getting Started with Oracle Database Tools Service

Step 1: Accessing Database Tools

Log in to your OCI account.
Navigate to Developer Services and select Database Tools.

Step 2: Creating a Database Connection

Click on "Create Connection"

2. Enter the connection details and select the database from your OCI tenancy

3. Securely store your credentials in the OCI Vault.

Create the OCI Vault > Add Encryption Key > and Database ADMIN Password

4. If your database is in a private subnet, configure the private endpoint.

Step 3: Validating the Connection

After creating the connection, click "Validate".

Introduction:

Data sharing lets you give the same data to multiple people. It helps you work with partners and create new partnerships. Oracle Data Sharing uses a standard method called the open delta sharing protocol. It has an easy-to-use API for sharing data. The data is shared in a format called Parquet. In this blog we will discuss and perform a quick demo using delta sharing.

Goals of the Open Delta Sharing Protocol

Share data without needing to copy it to another system.
Allow producers to control the data's state and version.
Serve as an open, cross-platform solution.
Support a variety of clients, including Power BI, Tableau, Apache Spark, pandas, and Java.
Offer flexibility to use preferred tools for BI, machine learning, and AI applications.
Ensure strong security, auditing, and governance.
Scale efficiently to handle massive data sets.

Pre-requisites to Enable Delta Sharing

Set up a user to manage data shares and their recipients.
Set up an Object Storage bucket for storing shared data.
Generate an OCI credential and link it to the Object Storage bucket.
Create, fill, and publish a data share.
Establish and authorize a data share recipient.
Create a data share consumer and access the data as a recipient.

Steps to Create a Provide Share

3. Log out from ADMIN user and login as share_provider

4. Create one object storage bucket to save the file and generate the RSA keys.

5. Define a Cloud Location and Create an OCI Credential

On the Database Actions | Launchpad page, click the Data Studio tab and then click the Data Load tab.

6. Load data and Make sure you are still logged in as the share_provider user. Click Oracle Database Actions | Launchpad in the banner to display the Database Actions Launchpad page.

Click the Data Studio tab, and then click the DATA SHARE tab.

Expand the TRAINING_SHARE data share node to display the objects in it. Drag and drop the CUSTOMER_CONTACT shared table to add it to the data link job.

APEX Application using GenAI

Using Generative AI, OCI APEX makes development easy. Users can build strong, scalable applications with little coding. Now, you can create a low-code APEX application by simply using the GenAI option.

In this blog post, I will illustrate, with screenshots, how to create an APEX application by simply configuring GenAI and leveraging its capabilities in just a few minutes.

Enable the APEX workspace

1. Open the APEX ORDS URL:

- Navigate to https://<IP_or_PublicEdnpoint>/ords/apex

2. Create Workspace

- Click on: Create Workspace

- Choose either a New Schema or Existing Schema.

- In this Demo we are creating a New Schema

- Click on Create Workspace.

3. Workspace Created:

- Sign out of Administration Services and sign in to `GenAI_Workspace` to begin building applications.

- Login with the APEX workspace name, Username, and Password.

Configure Generative AI Service

To utilize the Generative AI Service first we must configure the Generative AI Service with available AI models.

1. Access App Builder:

- Click on App Builder.

- Click on Workspace Utilities.

- Go to Generative AI.

- Click on Create.

2. Choose the AI Provider:

- From the drop-down menu, select the AI Provider.

- For this demo, we are utilizing the OCI Generative AI.

- By default, the Model ID is cohere.command r 16k, however, this Model ID is not functional.

- Choose ‘cohere.command r plus 08 2024’.

- Click on Create.

Utilize Generative AI capabilities to create a low code Apex application.

1. Create a New App:

- Go to the home page and click on Create or Create a New App.

- Provide a name for the application and click on Create App Using Generative AI.

2. Install Sample Datasets:

- Before creating the application using AI, we need to have some tables in the workspace.

- Click on Browse Sample Datasets.

- Choose any dataset from the available options and install it.

- Click on Next and Install Dataset.

- Now your first application is created. Let's choose the GenAI capability to create the application using GenAI.

- Accept the terms.

4. APEX Assistance Page:

- The APEX Assistance page will show chatbot options.

- In the chat option, type your requirement.

- Manually choose additional options from the Features.

- Additionally, select About Page and Feedback.

- Click on Create Application.

- Wait for 2-3 minutes, and your application will be created.

- Click on Run Application to view your application.

- The login page will appear, asking for the username and password.

Add Schema to Workspace and Onboard a User

1. Add Schema:

- Go back to the APEX workspace dashboard as the ADMIN user.

- Click on Add Schema.

2. Create an Application User:

- Click on Manage Workspace and then Manage Developer and Users.

- Click on Create User.

- Choose the correct workspace name and workspace schema.

- Provide a password and create the user.

Congratulations! Your first APEX application is created using the GenAI Service. The Administrator Page allows you to add users, see feedback, and much more.

Introduction

Collect and store database audit data from all your target databases centrally in Data Safe and identify anomalous behavior with pre-defined audit policies, alerts and reports.

When you register your target databases with Oracle Data Safe, it automatically creates the necessary audit resources (like audit profiles, audit policies, and audit trails).

In this lab, you'll use the auditing wizard to set up alert and audit policies on your target database. You'll start collecting audit data in Oracle Data Safe and set how long you want to keep this data. After that, you'll perform some activities on your target database and check the alerts and audit events that Oracle Data Safe generates.

Configure auditing and alerts for your target database

1. Return to the browser tab for Oracle Data Safe browser. In the breadcrumb at the top of the page, click Data Safe.

2. Under Data Safe, click Activity auditing.

3. Click Configure auditing and alerts to start the Activity Auditing wizard.

4. For Alert policy, do the following to enable alert policies, and then click Next.

a) If needed, click Change Compartment and select your compartment.

b) Select your target database. The list of available alert policies is displayed.

c) Select the Failed logins by admin user and User creation/modification alert policies to enable them. Additionally, choose the appropriate policies

Click on Next

For Audit policy, select the following audit policies to enable them, and then click Next.

a) Select Exclude Data Safe user activity.

b) Under Basic auditing, select Critical database activity and Database schema changes.

c) Under Admin activity auditing, select Admin user activity.

d) Under Custom policies, select APP_USER_NOT_APP_SERVER.

Click Next

For Audit trails, do the following to start collecting audit data, and then click Next.

a) Select UNIFIED_AUDIT_TRAIL: NOT_STARTED.

b) For the start date, select the beginning of your current month.

For Audit profile, configure the following, and then click Next.

Audit data offline retention months = 0
Paid usage = not selected

For Review and submit, review the configuration, and click Submit if everything is correct.

Simplified Disaster Recovery Management

With Oracle Managed Disaster Recovery, we no longer need to worry about managing DNS changes, load balancing, design-time data synchronization between instances, object storage buckets, and other responsibilities. All message traffic is automatically forwarded to the correct instance, and all messaging is bidirectional. This means we can fail over from one instance to another and back seamlessly. Data synchronization between the two instances occurs automatically in near real-time, minimizing data loss.

User Responsibilities

To leverage Oracle Managed Disaster Recovery, users need to follow these steps:

1. Subscribe to the Secondary Region

Ensure that we have subscribed to the secondary region where our disaster recovery instance will be hosted.

2. Install Primary and Secondary Instances

When installing an instance in the Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) Console, select the "Enable disaster recovery" toggle. This action creates primary and secondary instances in separate, predetermined regions. Data synchronization between the two instances is automatically configured and occurs in near real-time.

3. Perform Prerequisites Prior to Failover

Review and address the following prerequisites to ensure a smooth failover process:

If the connectivity agent is installed in an OCI Compute instance that fails, have a recovery plan in place for the connectivity agent.
If we are using our own email tenancy, manually maintain our email notification details in both the primary and secondary instances.
For File Server connections, use the port and hostname instead of the port and IP address.

4. Fail Over and Fail Back Between Instances in Different Regions

Oracle Managed Disaster Recovery supports two types of failover:

Unplanned Failover: If our primary instance becomes unreachable, click "Start Failover" in the OCI Console of the secondary instance to initiate failover.
Planned Migration: For periodic planned migrations between instances, click "Start Failover" in the OCI Console of either the primary or secondary instance to fail over to the secondary instance.

Once the original primary instance is restored, we can fail back to that instance.

5. Configure Email Notification Settings After Failover

After a failover occurs, configure the email notification settings on the Notifications page of the new primary instance to ensure you continue receiving important alerts and updates.
