Asiatic Lion – This subspecies of the lion are less well-known than its African brethren. It once inhabited a huge swath of territory across Western Asia, but as a result of deliberate hunting and some habitat loss, this species is now restricted to the Indian state of Gujarat in the western part of the country.
Indian Vulture – The Indian vulture experienced a sharp and sudden decline between 2000 and 2007 due to kidney failure from the accidental ingestion of pharmacological drugs that are usually administered to livestock. Because vultures help keep the environment free of carcasses, their decline has caused disease to spread more rapidly. Conservationists are attempting to breed them in captivity, but their slow reproduction is a hindrance to their rehabilitation. It’s now in danger of becoming extinct.

Big creatures are captivating. The blue whale, the largest animal currently alive, can grow up to 98 feet long, which is truly massive (and the largest recorded blue whale measured a staggering 110 feet)! However, there are extinct animals that surpass even these sizes. Now, let's explore the eight largest extinct animals.

#1 Megalodon

Megalodons, the colossal sharks, were of such immense size that they would make modern sharks appear minuscule in comparison. According to specialists, a fully grown megalodon could reach a staggering 20-50 times the size of a typical 15-20 feet long great white shark. It is believed that these ancient creatures could measure up to 50-60 feet in length, which is just slightly shorter than a standard bowling alley.

During the Neogene era, approximately 23.3 to 2.6 million years ago, colossal megalodons could have reached a staggering weight of 227,500 pounds, equivalent to 113 tons and surpassing the weight of a Boeing 757-200 airliner. These enormous creatures maintained their size by consuming small sharks and whales.

This was an apex predator when it was full size, but young megalodons were prey to sharks. Paleontologists think great white sharks contributed to their extinction by eating the youngsters. That coupled with a cooling climate meant the biggest shark that ever lived became extinct. The exact date isn’t sure. Experts thought it was 2.6 million years ago, but recent research suggests it could have been a million years earlier.

#2 Giant Sloth

Giant sloths were enormous animals that weighed up to four tons and were 20 feet from nose to tail! This length is comparable with a giraffe’s height which is huge when you consider the size of today’s tree-dwelling sloths.

Megatherium Americanum is the largest extinct giant sloth found so far. They roamed modern-day south America and their fossilized remains are regularly found in Uruguay, Bolivia and Argentina.

They were one of the largest land animals to ever exist and most likely herbivores that used their seven-inch claws to dig up roots or pull down tall tree branches. Their prehensile tongues picked out the choicest leaves and their tough molars chewed up the fibrous mass.

It’s possible packs of dire wolves or cave bears preyed on giant sloths, but not much else could have taken down such a big animal even if it did waddle-walk to account for its massive claws.

Giant sloths appear in early human cave art, so they were likely important to them for meat and warm skins. A cave in the Colombian Amazon depicts a giant sloth that was painted 11,880 to 12,600 years ago around the same time they began to become extinct.

#3 Titanosaur Dreadnoughtus

Titanosaurs are the biggest animals that have gone extinct on land. These massive dinosaurs were huge and Dreadnoughtus is possibly the largest of them all. Only one species of Dreadnoughtus ‘D.schrani’ has been found so far. It was discovered by American paleontologist Kenneth Lacovara in 2005 but who knows what else might turn up in the future.

This titanosaur was around 85 feet long and paleontologists still debate its weight estimating from 30 to 65 tons. Nothing walking on earth compares to its titanic proportions.

Dreadnoughtus means dread naught or fear nothing. It’s a good name because very little could have preyed on a grown adult! Dreadnoughtus was a herbivore that grazed tall trees and most likely ate stones to help grind up the fibrous matter.

Its fossils are found in modern-day Patagonia in Argentina and are around 77 million years old.

#4 Deinosuchus

Deinosuchus was a 39 feet long crocodile and one of the biggest animals that have gone extinct from the riverbeds and lakes of Earth.

It lived 82-73 million years ago in the late Cretaceous period. Fossilized remains have been found in modern-day North Carolina, Montana, Texas, and northern Mexico. It was named Deinosuchus in the 1850s and its name means ‘terrible crocodile’. This massive apex predator opportunistically hunted fish, sea turtles, and unsuspecting dinosaurs drinking from the riverside.

It most likely looked like a modern-day crocodile or alligator with thick skin and large teeth but it was much bigger. One fossilized jaw indicates Deinosuchus’ head alone was five feet in length! It could breathe underwater with just its nostrils protruding, hiding from its victim before pouncing with banana-sized teeth. Studies estimate it had a bite force of 20,000 pounds per square inch, double that of a T-rex.

Paleontologists debate why Deinosuchus became extinct before a meteor strike killed the dinosaurs. Many think their habitat shrunk and the climate changed so their prey was harder to find. Sustaining such size would have taken a lot of fuel and without enough food, they couldn’t survive.

#5 Titanoboa

Titanoboa cerrejonensis was the largest snake to inhabit the earth and one of the biggest animals that has gone extinct.

This mega snake formed part of the Titanoboa snake genus from La Guajira in northeastern Columbia. It was a constrictor that weighed 2,500 pounds and with its 250 individual vertebrae reached 42 feet long. A fossilized skull measures 16 inches! Today’s green anaconda can’t compare at only a maximum size of 550 pounds and 30 feet.

This terrifying snake lived in river systems and tropical rainforests and most likely ate fish although paleontologists debate its diet. Its size could have made it an apex predator for any animals that got too close, but its teeth indicate a pescatarian diet.

Experts think it grew to such gigantic proportions because the tropical climate was so warm. However, when climate change cooled Earth the Titanoboa became extinct.

#6 Basilosaurus

Basilosaurus, the King Lizard, was an up to 66-foot-long predatory whale that hunted sharks in the Tethys sea (now called the Pacific and Indian oceans).

Whale ancestors started life on land and moved into the ocean which is why they are a mammal species that breathe air. Experts think Basilosaurus was one of the genera that moved to the ocean. There, it was an apex predator able to grow to enormous sizes supported by water.

As well as eating large fish and sharks this massive whale probably took shoreline animals too. Studies show it had a bite force of 3,600 pounds per square inch which is about the same as a saltwater crocodile.

This huge carnivorous whale died out 35-33.9 million years ago. Their fossilized skeletons are found throughout America. Experts think they went extinct due to volcanic activity and climate change.

There are no descendants of Basilosaurus – something water sports fans are thankful for!

#7 Elephant Birds – Vorombe Titan

A list of the biggest animals that have gone extinct isn’t complete without a bird or two. Take elephant birds for example. They were flightless ratites of the Aepyornithidae family that only went extinct 1000 years ago.

The largest found was Vorombe titan. This massive bird lived in Madagascar towering almost 10 feet tall and weighing up to 1,600 pounds. That’s five times the weight of today’s ostriches. Although huge, their closest living relative is the New Zealand kiwi bird.

They ate seeds, nuts, and low-hanging tropical fruits from their rainforest environment. No youngsters have been found, but their fossilized egg fragments show the females laid 10 x 13-inch eggs!

Elephant birds became extinct due to human activity. As humans cleared forests for farmland their habitat shrunk. Humans also hunted Vorombe titan for its meat and took its eggs.

#8 Giant Woolly Rhino

Elasmotherium was a giant woolly rhino that lived in the late Miocene to Pleistocene era and went extinct around 40,000 years ago at the same time other massive megafauna began to die out. It’s sometimes called the Steppe rhino because it lived in the vast steppe grasslands of modern-day Russia, Siberia, and Ukraine.

This hairy rhinoceros reached a whopping 20 feet in length and nearly seven feet in height. It was huge and very few predators could manage to take down an adult, or even pierce its leathery skin.

The largest woolly rhino was E. sibiricum. It was mammoth-sized with a horn on its forehead. No horn has been found, but a hole in the skull of a fossilized specimen indicates they had one.

This horn was used to attract mates and fight predators but also to sweep the snow away from its herbivorous diet of moss and grasses. Interestingly, this extinct woolly rhino had longer legs than modern-day rhinos and paleontologists think it may have galloped like a horse.

Climate change and dwindling grasslands contributed to its decline and eventual extinction.

While human predation is rumored to have been an issue, it wasn’t nearly as big of a problem as the one posed by their animals. The animals that humans brought with them excessively preyed on the dodo.

However, dodos did make easy prey for humans because they didn’t know to fear humans. They were easily hunted because of this. This is how the dodo got their reputation for being dumb.

If invasive animals didn’t prey on the dodo, they preyed on their food supply. Some of the invasive animals are macaques, dogs, pigs, cats, and rats.

What Did the Dodo Bird Look Like?

Photography didn’t exist when the dodo went extinct, so the only visual queues we have when determining the bird’s appearance are paintings, drawings, and written descriptions from the 1600s. Due to the dodo bird’s popularity, its likeness is a popular image today, and it’s even an emoji.

Fossil records show that the dodo stood a little over three feet tall. In the 17th century, realistic portrayals of animals were not part of the artistic canon of the time, so any extant drawings and paintings are subject to artistic embellishment. They can’t be relied upon as factual representations.

Generally, it’s shown with a brown-grey coloration accentuated with yellow feet. It had longer tail feathers, a bare neck, a bald head, and a colorful beak. Its thick beak may have been strong enough to bust open coconuts.

This bird also had strong legs to support its big body, and studies of fossilized bones have shown that it most likely was a swift runner. It weighed up to 50 lbs, which is another reason dodos have such substantial legs.

Its beak was likely its primary defense, and its small wings were used defensively in standoffs with other dodos. Fossil records of wings with injuries suggest that the flightless wings still served a purpose.

Chicks grew quickly and obtained adult size in months so they could endure the stormy and lean summers on Mauritius. Females may have lived to be about 17 years old, while males lived to be 21 years old. Males were larger than females.

No one is sure what dodo birds ate, and it’s thought they consumed fruit, crabs, insects, nuts, roots, and other items.

Everest is the highest mountain in the world and one of the most challenging to climb. It was first climbed by Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay on May 29, 1953. They spent about 15 minutes on the summit, and during that time, they took photographs, planted flags, and left offerings. The summit is so high that a human can’t stay for too long without losing consciousness, so timing or having portable oxygen is essential. They didn’t have the same technology that we do today, which adds a layer of awe to the whole endeavor.

There probably isn’t any other place in the world like the Himalayan Mountains. The impressive peaks are one thing, but the immense spaces, cultures, religions, and sheer beauty of this part of the world are truly something else. As a natural space, it’s worth protecting, and the cultures within it are worth preserving. Examples of success stories do exist, and the snow leopard is a perfect one. Nearing extinction, it was able to be saved due to intentional preservation from humans. South Dakota is home to many types of flora and fauna. Life in South Dakota spans 77,123 square miles of prairies, farmlands, mountains, and glacial lakes. It is a place you will want to experience, and checking out the tallest mountain in the state is a great way to do it. Black Elk Peak has a remarkably diverse animal population, just like the diversity within the terrain and climate.

Black Elk Peak is located in the Black Elk Wilderness inside of Custer State Park in the town of Custer. The peak sits a staggering 7,242 feet above sea level. This is a high peak, but what’s even better is that it is the highest point east of the Rocky Mountains in Colorado to the Pyrenees Mountains in France.

A Bit of History

Black Elk was born in 1863 in Little Powder River in what is now known as Wyoming. He was the second cousin to Crazy Horse. Black Elk began having visions as a little boy of only five years old. When he was nine, he had a vision that painted his future calling as a holy man. In the dream, he met with the Six Grandfathers, who represent the four cardinal directions along with the Earth and Sky. They each gave him a gift, and the ability to heal another person was one of those such gifts.

When Black Elk was 12, Colonial Lieutenant Custer scoured the land for a military post and, in doing so, violated the Fort Laramie Treaty of 1868. The treaty legally gave the Black Hills land to the Lakota. Soon after Custer broke the treaty, gold was discovered in the mountains, and close to a thousand miners came to stay in the Black Hills. Custer was killed, but the war upon Native Americans had just begun. Over many decades, Black Elk remained a holy man to his tribe and did his best to understand the white man and make peace. This majestic mountain range is named after Black Elk for his peace, bravery, and spiritual significance to the Lakota.

The Black Elk Wilderness and Peak are regarded respectfully as spiritual places. Many creatures call the Ghost Dance-echoing mountains home, and some of the most unique and interesting reside on top of Black Elk Peak. Animals of Black Elk Peak

Any wilderness is home to tons of wildlife, but on Black Elk Peak, it takes a special kind of animal to handle the weather and terrain. Some animals are relatively common, and others cannot be seen elsewhere. Black Elk Peak in the Black Hills is mesmerizing and awe-inspiring with its views of Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming, and Nebraska. Without further ado, meet the animals of Black Elk Peak.

#1 Black Bear (Ursus americanus)

Appearance: Solid black, black eyes and brown muzzle

Size: 90 – 660 pounds and 4.3 – 6.2 feet long

Habitat: Forest

Diet: Berries, fish, insects, roots, carrion

Lifespan: 10 – 30 years

The black bear is one of those mountain creatures that is very seldom seen. Conservation efforts have been underway, resulting in a boom in the black bear population. These medium-sized bears are timid but also curious. If you plan to camp while in South Dakota, follow proper food storage techniques to ensure you still have food when you get hungry. These bears stick to foraging during the daylight hours, so it is always possible to see one while you are on the trail.

#2 Black Hills Mountain Goat (Oreamnos americanus)

Appearance: Fuzzy white or light beige with two thin horns and a white beard.

Size: 180 – 280 pounds, 4.7 – 5.1 feet long, 2.6 – 3 feet tall at the shoulder, and has horns up to 10 inches long

Habitat: Impossible-looking rock faces on very tall mountains up to 13,000 feet

Diet: Lichens, shrubs, grass, herbs, ferns, and trees

Lifespan: 18 years

These mountain goats might look cute and huggable, but they are not, and approaching one should not be done. They are wild animals and must be treated as such. They are sometimes aggressive and will attack humans even if they are familiar with being around them. These goats scale the sides of almost vertical mountain cliffs and even sleep under small overhangs on the rocky sides of mountains.

#3 American Buffalo/Bison (Bison bison)

Appearance: Massive brown to almost black beasts with cow-like horns and wooly coats. The coat is incredibly thick around the neck and head, creating a bearded look. They have long, thin tails with hair at the end, similar to cows.

Size: 790 – 2200 pounds, 7 – 12.5 feet long, and 5 – 6.5 feet to the hump

Habitat: Open grassy plains and prairies

Diet: Grass

Lifespan: Up to 20 years

American Bison, or Buffalo, as they are most commonly called, have made a comeback in the Black Elk Wilderness. It all began in 1914 when 36 bison arrived at the park, which was then a game preserve. In 30 years, the herd had grown to 2,500 bison, and overgrazing the area became an issue. The Black Elk Buffalo Roundup kicked off in 1965 and has done so in September of each year. Some bison are removed from the herd and sold to bison ranchers across the United States for breeding purposes.

#4 Wild Burros (Equus asinus)

Appearance: Chestnut brown furry coats that are much longer in winter and giveaway to shorter, cooler summer hair. They have enormous, long ears and a white or grey muzzle.

Size: 500 pounds and average 11 hands tall or 2.6 – 5.2 feet at the withers

Habitat: Open plains, grassy areas, and mountain ranges where their expert climbing unfolds

Diet: Native grasses and small woody plants

Lifespan: 27 – 40 years

Burros are undomesticated donkeys. Some may be friendly and reasonably used to human interaction, but it is imperative to remember that these are wild animals and not domesticated. Respect for these animals is essential when they are encountered. Do not approach them but instead admire them from a safe distance. The burros are not native to the South Dakota park but are descendants of those who once brought visitors to the summit. They were released, and their population has increased. They are originally from Africa and were brought over when the Spaniards came in the 1500s.

#5 Mule Deer (Odocoileus hemionus)

Appearance: Similar to white-tailed deer in looks; tan to light brown fur, white face, and muzzle, large mule-like ears, white behind with a narrow white tail with a black tip and forked antlers

Size: 95 – 330 pounds, 31 – 42 inches at the shoulder, and 3.9 – 6.9 feet long

Habitat: Mountains, open plains, forests, grassy areas, and near sources of water

Diet: Grass, woody plants, small trees, fruit,

Lifespan: 9 – 11 years

Mule deer, along with white-tailed deer, are abundant in the park. Most notably, they can be seen on Wilderness Loop Road in Custer State Park, including on Black Elk Peak. They are out foraging for shoots, grass, and tasty plants year-round.

#6 Prairie Dogs (Cynomys ludovicianus)

Appearance: Compact tan-colored body, small ears, with a black-tipped short tail

Size: 1 – 3 pounds and 12 – 16 inches long

Habitat: Prairies, open plains, mountains, deserts

Diet: Some insects, many types of grass, roots, thistle, and some plants. They even eat buffalo scat at times.

Lifespan: 3 – 5 years

Prairie dogs are communal animals that share dens in a hierarchy. In Black Elk Peak, these little mammals feast on grasses and insects. When they see the grasses are declining, they switch to different types of plant and insect life to sustain themselves.

#7 Black Hills Bighorn Sheep (Ovis canadensis)

Appearance: Brownish tan body with a white behind, muzzle, and stomach. They are very muscular and have large curled horns that can weigh 30 pounds and, stretched out, can measure over 3 feet long!

Size: 160 – 350 pounds, 5.1 feet long, and up to 42 inches tall at the shoulder.

Habitat: Grassy areas, plains, prairies, mountains

Diet: They choose the most nutritious food available. They prefer grasses, woody plants, herbaceous plants, and shrubs

Lifespan: 12 – 20 years

The bighorn sheep in Black Elk Peak are impressive creatures with a problematic past in Custer State Park, South Dakota. Long ago, bighorn sheep were abundant in the Black Hills and Custer area; likely due to hunting, their numbers vanished. In 1922, eight bighorn sheep were introduced back to the Custer State Park area, and once again, the numbers flourished. Sadly, their demise didn’t take long, and in 1950, the park was again without bighorn sheep. After that, more bighorn sheep were introduced, and their numbers have remained steady with conservation efforts.

#8 Mountain Lions (Felis Concolor)

Appearance: Tawny tan coasts with black around the nose and muzzle. They have long tails at 2.1 – 3.1 feet long and are pure muscle.

Size: 65 – 250 pounds, 7 – 8 feet long, and stands 2 – 3 feet at the shoulder.

Habitat: Steep rocky canyons, mountainous terrain, deserts and coastal forests

Diet: As opportunistic hunters, they will eat any mammal but prefer deer.

Lifespan: 10 – 21 years though 10 is most common for wild mountain lions

These massive kitties are incredibly reclusive and avoid contact with humans. However, they have recently made the news several times for stalking humans. The humans in question likely stumbled upon some little mountain lions, and their mama intervened like all good mamas do. It is vital to keep your food secure if camping in South Dakota and to remain aware at all times just in case you cross paths with one of these beautiful animals. Chances are they will be more aware of your presence than you are of theirs and get out of there long before you come hiking through.

#9 Yellow-Bellied Marmots (Marmota flaviventris)

Appearance: Brown fur with a dark brown bushy tail, white around their nose, and yellowish bellies.

Size: Up to 11 pounds, 2 feet long

Habitat: Rocky, mountainous terrain above 6,500.

Diet: Insects, flowers, grass, plants, and bird eggs

Lifespan: Up to 15 years

These rodents live in colonies of 10 – 20 marmots and warn others of predators by whistling from their lookout perch. They are opportunistic foragers who eat small animals, insects, and their favorite foliage and flowers. The marmot eats at dawn and dusk but otherwise remains underground.

#10 Bald Eagles (Haliaeetus leucocephalus)

Appearance: Dark brown body with a white head, yellow beak, feet, and golden eyes.

Size: 6.6 – 14 pounds, and a wingspan of 5.9 – 7.5 feet

Habitat: They nest in very tall trees near water sources but can be seen soaring high above the tallest mountains.

Diet: Fish, carrion, small to medium-sized mammals

Lifespan: 20 – 30 years

These massive birds soar high above Black Elk Peak, South Dakota looking for prey. They prefer to nest near bodies of water and likely live across from Black Elk Peak at Sylvan Lake. The lake is also filled with fish, the eagle’s favorite food.

#11 Coyotes (Canis latrans)

Appearance: Grey, tan, brown, and black coats with tan legs and white or beige undersides and chests. It has yellow eyes, large pointed ears, and a black nose.

Size: 15 – 46 pounds, 30 -35 inches,

Habitat: Forests, plains, mountains, deserts, urban areas, and coastal regions

Diet: As opportunistic hunters, coyotes will eat just about anything, including trash. They prefer small – medium-sized mammals, fish, carrion, eggs, birds, amphibians, and human food.

Lifespan: 10 – 15 years

You will unlikely see the mostly nocturnal coyote, but they are out there. You may hear them throughout the night and even see their tracks in the dirt. They have plenty of prey around in South Dakota’s Black Elk Wilderness and would never approach a human unless they were guarding their young or starving to death. If you bring your dog, make sure to keep it leashed. Coyotes are known for snatching small dogs for food and tempting larger dogs to chase them.

#12 Black Hills Elk (Cervus canadensis)

Appearance: Tan body with a darker mane of fur around the neck and head, dark legs, muscular bodies, and large antlers.

Size: 377 -1300 pounds, 2.5 – 5 feet tall at the shoulder and 5.5 – 9 feet long

Habitat: Grassy areas, prairies, forest edges, some sub-desert terrain, mountains, and coniferous forests

Diet: Grasses, shoots, shrubs, some trees,

Lifespan: 10 – 20 years

Elk are abundant in Custer State Park, South Dakota though they do not come out during the hot summer days. Instead, the best time to see these giant majestic creatures is at dawn and dusk during the warmer weather and throughout the year. There is a hunting season for elk though it does have a limit because conservation efforts are underway. The best place to see elk during your hike to Black Elk Peak is on Wildlife Loop Road at the times stated above.

#13 Osprey (Pandion haliaetus)

Appearance: White underbody and feet, brown and white striped upper wings, with the underside half white and half brown with white striped feathers. They have yellow eyes and a black beak.

Size: 3 – 4 pounds, 21-23 inches long, and a wingspan of 5 – 6 feet

Habitat: Tall trees near bodies of water

Diet: Fish that are no deeper than 3 feet underwater and no more than 16 inches in length

Lifespan: 8 – 10 years, but can occasionally live up to 25 years

The lovely Osprey is one of many raptors that call Custer State Park home. With Sylvan Lake nearby, these massive birds stay nearby, hunting fish and feeding their young. They generally nest in tall trees near bodies of water so they don’t have to travel far with their prey.

#14 Pronghorn Antelope (Antilocapra americana)

Appearance: Reddish-brown upper with a white underside and distinctive markings on their necks. They have a white rear, and their hair stands up on it when startled. They have horns reaching 15 inches long.

Size: 90 – 150 pounds, 4.5 feet long, and 31 – 41 inches tall at the shoulder

Habitat: Grassy plains or prairies and deserts

Diet: Grasses and cactus plants, which they sometimes use as a water source

Lifespan: 10 years

The Longhorn antelope are abundant in Custer State Park, South Dakota and frequently seen on Wilderness Loop Road. They are swift long-distance runners but not good jumpers, so they tend to stick to wide-open grassy plains where they can outrun predators.

#15 Peregrine Falcons (Falco peregrinus)

Appearance: Dark head feathers, hooked beak, yellow feet, black eyes, grey and white striped feathers on wings and tail with a white neck and chest.

Size: .5 – 3.3 pounds, 14 – 19.2 inches long, and 2.4 – 3.9 foot wingspan

Habitat: Mountains, coastal regions, deserts, plains, forests, and anywhere near a body of water

Diet: Other birds, mainly; starlings, pigeons, blackbirds, jays, shorebirds, waterfowl, and sometimes insects, amphibians, reptiles, and bats.

Lifespan: 15 years

They may be small, but they are mighty and, by far, the most ferocious bird out there. Watching these small falcons while in South Dakota is a real treat because they tend to reach speeds over 200 mph while diving and do various tricks while in flight. Their small angular wings allow them to take turns very abruptly.

#16 Porcupines (Erethizon dorsaum)

Appearance: Big, stout, spiky mammals that vary slightly in color from dark brown and black to chestnut brown with long fur with white tips making up two inches of the hair.

Size: 22 – 30 pounds

Habitat: Dense coniferous and mixed forests, mountains, desert shrub communities, tundra, grasslands, and plains.

Diet: During the winter, they predominantly eat evergreen needles and the inner bark of trees, although they will eat other items if they are available and not buried in snow. In the spring and summer, they eat berries, roots, shoots, leaves, seeds, grasses, and stems.

Lifespan: 18 years in the wild

Like some other animals on this page, the porcupine is elusive and rarely seen. They are very slow-moving, maxing out at two mph, and tend to be rightfully wary of humans. Sometimes in South Dakota, you might see one making their way through the forest or up in a tree. Porcupines even make nests in trees sometimes. They are destructive and do not stop at having a small piece of bark for a snack. Porcupines will eat as much of the tree as they can reach, often killing the tree.

#17 Eastern Wild Turkeys (Meleagris gallopavo)

Appearance: Large brown birds with iridescent feathers, small heads with red and blue coloring making their large eyes stand out. The males have a very prominent red snood. The males have long tail feathers that they spread wide during their mating display, similar to a peacock’s mating dance.

Size: 5.5 – 24 pounds, 3.5 feet long, 3.3 foot tall, and has a wingspan of 4 – 4.75 feet

Habitat: Riparian forests next to grassy fields or clearings and near bodies of freshwater. They also tend to like farmland with big open pastures.

Diet: Berries, fruit, seeds, nuts, roots, amphibians, reptiles, insects, acorns, snails, and vegetable matter.

Lifespan: 3 – 5 years

These large birds are not quiet and will certainly let you know where they are once they start gobbling. Turkeys tend to stick along where the forest meets open grassy areas and walk in a group. Occasionally you will see a male strutting around by himself. Like chickens, it’s one male to a group of females. Wild turkeys are often depicted as flightless; they can fly short distances but prefer walking to forage. Sometimes wild turkeys have been known to be aggressive towards humans and pets. There are so many beautiful birds on this planet that a list of 100, much less 10 couldn’t do justice to all of them. That being said, the criteria for beautiful birds for this blog had to be rather strict. First, the bird has to have good proportions. The exotic red feathers of the scarlet ibis are lovely, but the bird has that overlong curved beak that makes it a bit too weird for the list. The flamingo is also too funny-looking. Other birds with strange-looking or outsized beaks, with notable wattles, oversized feet, disproportionately long legs, and casques also don’t make the list.

Feathers do not have to be very colorful, but they must not give the appearance of having a rough texture or untidiness. The smoother-looking the feathers are the better, which rules out a bird such as South America’s guira cuckoo. There must be no large bare patches on the head and neck or a notable crop, which rules out most vultures. With that in mind, here are the 10 most beautiful birds in the world.

#10: Birds of Paradise

These birds belong to the Paradisaeidae family and are mostly found in Oceania. Not all of them are spectacular in their beauty. Some look suspiciously like crows, and the colorful plumage is largely restricted to the males. Yet, when people think of some of the most beautiful birds in the world these are often on the list. Among the most beautiful birds in the world are:

Ribbon-tailed Astrapia

Also called Shaw Mayer’s astrapia, the beauty of this bird rests not in its ridiculously long white tail feathers, but in the jewel-like blue-green of its head and throat and the rich, crushed velvet blackness of the rest of its body. The two curving white tail feathers that give the bird its name ends in a black dart. The female is not as showy but she’s not exactly drab, with a blue iridescence on her head and her own set of long, brown, and white tail feathers.

Blue bird of Paradise

The male blue bird of paradise has a black head with a white beak and white rings around its eyes. It has a “cape” and tail of deep turquoise and a black oval outlined in red in the middle of his chest. The tail also bears long wires that end with white spatulas. He has flank plumes that are orange on top and light blue lined with dark red below. This 12 inch-long bird would be gorgeous if it just perched on a branch and did nothing, but his courtship ritual turns him into something completely awe-inspiring. He hangs upside down, fans out his plumes, and expands and contracts the oval in his chest while he makes a buzzing noise. Both hens and humans can’t help but be impressed.

Lawes’ Parotia

Among the most beautiful birds of paradise, the beauty of Lawes’s parotia is almost too much of a muchness, but as the blue bird looks, it’s there to attract the ladies and intimidate his rivals. This bird has a stubby tail and wide wings, and the male is deeply black but has a white crest on its forehead and purple iridescence on its throat. There’s also a glittering breast shield whose color ranges from that of a high-quality emerald to a citrine, depending on how the light hits it. Three wires end in little spatulas above each eye, and when the bird goes into his courtship dance he raises his flank feathers in a way that resembles a skirt.

#9: Flame Bowerbird

This 10-inch long bird of the New Guinea rainforest comes by its name honestly, for it resembles a torchlight. Its head down to its neck plumes and shoulders is brilliant red-orange, cooling down to orange then bright flame yellow on its back and wings. The tail and wings are tipped with black. Like other bowerbirds, it builds a structure, or bower made out of sticks and decorates it with all kinds of bright and shiny objects such as stones, shells, bits of glass, and even lost coins and jewelry. The bowerbird’s eyes are also golden, and he can expand and contract his pupils during his courtship dance, which is crazy.

The three species of the peacock, Pavo cristatus, Pavo muticus, and Afropavo congensis inevitably make the list of the most beautiful birds in the world. With its long train and spectacular coloration, the beauty of the peacock is on the border of sublime and ridiculous. It’s no wonder that the peacock is a symbol of overweening arrogance. But this exotic beauty is for a purpose and comes with a price. The male uses his train to impress the females. It takes a lot of provender to keep those feathers in tip-top shape, and the male is, to say the least, easy for a predator to spot.

#7: Mute Swan

With its pure white feathers contrasting with an orange bill, black mask, and long white neck, the mute swan is the epitome of avian beauty and grace. Found on large bodies of fresh water in temperate zones, the swan is the heaviest of the swimming birds, and though other swimming birds such as ducks and geese aren’t necessarily ugly, the swan’s beauty seems a miracle. It is also elegant in flight, with the largest birds having a 10-foot wingspan.They are notable for being monogamous, and pairs stay together even when they’re not breeding. The male also helps build the nest and incubate the eggs, which is unusual for geese and ducks. However, it’s best to enjoy the swan’s looks at a distance, for it can be bad-tempered. Few things are more graceful than a swan swimming with its wings raised and its neck is drawn back. But beware, this is a threat pose. It means the bird is annoyed and ready to rumble.

#6: Purple Honeycreeper

Found in the Caribbean and South America, the purple honeycreeper does have a bill that’s too long and curved, but its plumage, a startling shade of amethyst, puts it on the list of the most beautiful birds in the world. It’s a little bird, only about 4.5 inches long, but the male has those purple feathers with black wings, belly, and tail, all contrasting beautifully with bright yellow legs. The bill allows the bird to sip nectar, especially from bromeliad flowers.

#5: Turquoise Parrot

Found in eastern Australia, the sexes of this small parrot are sort of similar, though the female is paler. The male is mostly green with a yellow belly and it’s the amazing, clear turquoise blue of his face and wings that place him on the list of the most beautiful birds in the world. Not only are his wings blue, but they also have red patches on the shoulders.

#4: Victoria Crowned Pigeon

The Victoria crowned pigeon is singular. Found in New Guinea, it is a terrestrial pigeon that lives on the ground. Named for Queen Victoria, it is notable for its “crown” a crest with violet-blue, white-tipped fan-shaped feathers. The bird has a purplish-maroon breast, and it has a bar of pale blue feathers on its deeper blue wings. Even the legs, which are unusually scaly are attractive. The blue and purplish feathers of the bird contrast wonderfully with its ruby-red eyes. Unfortunately, this large pigeon’s conservation status is near threatened.

#3: Scarlet Tanager

Not all beautiful birds have to be exotic. The scarlet tanager is found in the United States east of the Mississippi and winters down in northwestern South America. Though its scientific name is Piranga olivacea, with olivacea meaning “olive green” the male of this common bird is an intense scarlet with deeply black wings. The red is especially vibrant during the breeding season and may even outdo the red of its cousin the cardinal. It is the female who is olive green. Scarlet tanagers adore oranges, by the way. To attract one, impale an orange half on a tree limb.

#2: Gouldian Finch

If a child was given a box of crayons and an outline of a bird, they would probably create something as colorful as the Gouldian finch, one of the most beautiful birds in the world. The male has a red and black face capped with turquoise blue and olive green, an olive green back, a purple breast, a yellow belly, and a turquoise blue rump. The female of this species is also brightly colored, though her breast is more mauve than purple. But this is but one of many color mutations, for the bird was bred in captivity before the Australian government banned its export. One weird thing is that the open mouths of the chicks seem to sport beads that glow in the dark. Scientists don’t quite know their purpose.

#1: Blue-gray Tanager

This little songbird is blue. It is blue like no other bird is blue. Even the mountain bluebird is not as blue as this bird. Its shades of blue range from Alice blue on the head to cerulean on the breast to purplish-blue and sapphire blue on the wings. The wings may be tipped with midnight blue. Found from Mexico to the Amazon to Trinidad and Tobago, this beautiful, noisy bird is as fearless as it is blue. It flourishes near human habitation and secondary forests.

Some may consider the puffin to be more of a “cute” bird, but the marvelous uniqueness of this sea bird, native to coastal areas and the oceans of the Northeastern United States moving up into Greenland, the Brittany Coast of France, Iceland, Great Britain, and Northern Russia. They sport a tux look–white breasts with black side and back feathers–while having exotic orange beaks with an inner black area outlined in yellow.

Lilac-Breasted Roller

This eye-catching bird’s feathers come in beautiful hues, sporting a lilac breast, a turquoise abdomen, a green or blue head, and a brown back. It’s native to eastern and southern Africa and the southern Arabian Peninsula.

Toucan

Though its beak is twice as big as its body, the tropical toucan does not look gangly or silly. In fact, it stands out as one of the most beautiful and distinct birds of paradise. It’s a favorite in the marketing world, with colorful characters like Toucan Sam to celebrate it. Toucans are found in southern Mexico, Central America, and South America down to northern Argentina.
