Farmer and Landowner Workshop: Working Lands for Wildlife

Tuesday, July 16th

Private landowners and farmers interested in creating and conserving wildlife habitat throughout Southern New Jersey are invited to attend.

Farm Bill programs provide technical and financial assistance to landowners to conserve working landscapes for the benefit of at-risk species including American black duck, Northern bobwhite quail, bog turtles, and many others.

Partners of the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) will provide updates on imperiled species and describe how habitat enhancement on private lands supports them.

Representatives from New Jersey Audubon, NRCS, Quail Forever, New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife, and US Fish and Wildlife Service will present programs available to help landowners meet their goals for wildlife conservation.

Many programs provide producers with incentive payments for the protection of pollinators, songbirds and non-game species on working lands. Applications will be available on site.

Enjoy an evening mingling with like-minded individuals and professionals in the field. Light fare will be provided, and a wine cash bar will be available throughout the evening on the lawn of Cedar Rose Vineyards. We hope to see you there!

These meeting will consist of presentations on regulations pertaining to farm labor. The presenters will be from the Department of Labor, NJ DEP Pesticide Control Program, and NJFB. The topics discussed will be as follows. This will be an opportunity to ask any questions you may have going into the growing season.

The Right-to-Farm Act was enacted to help address conflicts among farmers, neighbors, municipalities, and counties regarding a farm’s practices. Under the Act, a commercial farm can receive significant protection from nuisance lawsuits and overly restrictive local regulations, provided the farm is operated responsibly.

This workshop is open and free to the public.

The Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Cumberland County is offering pesticide credit classes. The following dates/credits are available:

February 13^th 6 credits each for categories 13, 3A and PP2

February 20^th 6 credits each for categories 1A and PP2, 3 credits for category 3A

February 27^th 6 credits each for categories 1A and PP2, 3 credits for category 3A

March 20^th 3 credits each for categories 1A, 3A and PP2, 6 CORE credits

March 27^th 6 credits for category 7A

Each class is $20 per person and runs from 9am-noon. Please arrive 15 minutes ahead for registration.

New Healthy Land & Waters Initiative in Western Cumberland County, February 1, 2018, Bridgeton, NJ

The Cohansey Area Watershed Association’s first meeting of 2018 will feature Kristen Meistrell of NJ Audubon Society. Kristen will be presenting NJAS’ “Healthy Land and Waters Grant Program,” which offers both technical and financial assistance to farmers and producers in Southern New Jersey who are interested in adopting best management practices. This program focuses on practices that improves water quality, builds soil health, and creates wildlife habitat on working lands. The specific practices include no-till or reduced till, multi-species cover crops, riparian buffers, and more.

Kristen Meistrell is Stewardship Project Director—South Region for New Jersey Audubon. She has been with New Jersey Audubon since 2012, working closely with the Stewardship team to create, restore, and manage habitat. She oversees stewardship activities in Southern New Jersey and works with private and public landowners to develop and implement conservation plans that focus on a variety of habitats.
