1. “TO BE” — kuwa

A. Present tense: NI (am / is / are)

In Kiswahili, ni is used to talk about:

who someone is
what something is
what something is like

Examples you may use while travelling:

Mimi ni mgeni.
(I am a visitor.)
Mimi ni rafiki wa Asha.
(I am Asha’s friend.)
Huyu ni rafiki yangu.
(This is my friend.)
Huu ni mradi wa wanawake.
(This is a women’s project.)

B. Past and Future (for understanding)

C. Negative “to be” — SI

Mimi si mtalii.

2. “TO HAVE” — kuwa na

This verb is very useful for travel.

The emphatic ndi- forms are closely connected to relative pronouns. These small markers link a noun to extra information about it — such as who did something, what was involved, or which item is being discussed.

Examples of Relative Pronouns

who: Mtu ambaye alikuja (mtu aliyekuja) jana ni rafiki yangu.

Familia yangu ina baba, mama, mimi na ndugu zangu; wawili wa kike na wawili wa kiume. Kiongozi wa familia yangu ni baba. Yeye ni mwalimu katika shule jirani. Baba yangu ni mtu mzuri sana lakini ukimkasirisha, utapata adhabu. Huwa anafanya kazi kwa bidii ili kukimu mahitaji ya familia yetu. Yeye hutununulia chakula, hutulipia karo, na hutununulia nguo. The emphatic ndi- calls attention to or emphasizes something as particularly relevant or important.

It implies the sense of "indeed it is this way" or "it is precisely like this".

CONDITIONAL –NGE-

The -nge- tense is used to show a hypothesis in the present tense. It is used in verbs to express a condition that can still be realized.

-nge- expressions have two parts; the condition and the consequence.

It is sometimes called the ‘subsecutive’ tense; it expresses that a second action relies on the first action being carried out.

1. When narrating a story that happened in the past, you introduce the story by the past tense marker -li- and use the -ka- tense marker subsequently to narrate the story.

2. Also used with verbs in the subjunctive, following an imperative (going to do something).

3. ‘Headline’ Ka- is used without a subject prefix and without altering the verb.
