Disaster struck at TEAMS borehole

On Sunday 12th January, disaster struck at TEAMS borehole! Our 10,000-litre high level water storage tank 15 metres high above the borehole, burst and water cascaded on to the ground below. Thankfully no one was drawing water at the time so there were no injuries. The tank itself looked as if it had exploded. The shell of the tank had split into many sections and was beyond repair.
Just before Christmas a small crack had been noticed in the tank, but as only a small amount of water was seeping out, it had been earmarked for further investigation this month! It just highlights the force of water!
TEAMS borehole is the only clean and reliable source of drinking water within the community. The nearest alternative source is over 1 km away - a very long way when you have to carry a full Jerrycan! TEAMS site itself (which unusually for this part of Northern Uganda) has flushing toilets and showers on site, soon ran out of clean water too.
An urgent email was sent to TEAMS Board in the UK and replacement tank was authorised and purchased the next day. However, how do you get a 3 m diameter tank weighing almost 300kgs (empty) on to a 4 m square platform situated 15 meters above the ground? Fortunately, a mobile crane on hire from Kampala was in Gulu and after discussion, the driver agreed to come and help us lift the tank. So, within 60 hours of the accident a new tank was positioned and plumbed in! It took another 8 hours for the tank to fill so the borehole could re-open, but the local community were very grateful repairs happened so quickly. Not a usual occurrence in Central Africa.
Financially, this was an unexpected expense for TEAMS. At just over £900 at today’s (poor) rate of exchange it represents 3% of the annual support we have committed to supply TEAMS Uganda during 2025. We were just starting to feel this was a very poor start to 2025 when a substantial donation dropped through the letterbox from one of our generous supporters covering the cost. Praise the Lord!
If you feel you can help TEAMS reach out to the poor and vulnerable people in Northern Uganda, please do visit our “Get involved” page and make a donation to TEAMS bank account. No matter how small a contribution, your gift will make a difference. As TEAMS UK has no paid staff or premises its admin costs (mainly accountancy fees are under 5% of its total income, making it a very efficient Charity.

Wow, what a trip! It was non-stop but so rewarding.

Duncan and I say it is our second home and everyone we meet there seems to agree, it was therefore great to take 2 others with us to share in the love we are so blessed to receive.
Geoff, on his first visit to Africa, had wondered how he would fit in not having experienced the culture before, no need to worry he said he felt he slotted in just like a piece in a jigsaw. Thank you, Lord!
We were all able to use our different and varying gifts, sharing together to work as a team to do our best for all those we met. I can’t possibly mention everything that we did, there was so much, but here is a taster.
We all had a morning to lead Devotions which followed amazing singing. Bruce a retired vicar, spent time talking to all the staff, took bible studies and preached; Duncan and Geoff held a workshop for the Micro Finance clients and others interested in setting up small businesses; Geoff helped with the painting of the church, Duncan worked alongside Geoffrey and Alfred.

I held 4 workshops for the older girls and ladies, starting with making hand sewn lavender bags. I taught about their body’s development through puberty, menstruation and menopause, sadly this is not information that anyone receives so there were very many questions. Everyone then made reusable sanitary pads by hand and each were given new underwear.
We all went to various parts of the hospital, taking Babygro’s and lovely hand knitted jackets for the new borns in maternity and neonatal; a walking stick, incontinence pads, toothbrushes & toothpaste and lady’s catheters to surgical and medical. All so well received as they have so little. It was a privilege to pray with many, although quite heartbreaking at times, babies dying, horrendous injuries but the Lord gave us the right words as His Peace was evident.
The 3 men went to the Men’s Prison while I visited the Ladies. We all took pens, notebooks, underwear, toothbrushes & toothpaste and soap, life is incredibly basic inside with many on remand and who have been awaiting trial for 2 years. The praise and worship in both the Men’s and Ladies side was wonderful, sharing the Word when you could hear a pin drop and faces are fixed on every word that is said was heartwarming.
The most exhausting but truly uplifting time was on Saturday afternoon when we held a Children’s Fun Time. It was hot and very noisy, over 200 children having such fun, such a joy to hear the laughter which sadly is so rare for many. We played team games with Frisby’s, parachutes and balls, I read a story about the Rainbow Fish (with an interpreter as my Lou is not quite up to scratch!!) and then they all made their own fish decorating them with coloured tissue paper - there were bits of tissue paper everywhere!!!
They loved it and were proud to take home their beautiful paper plate fish.
Then bananas and a quiet time to round up before they headed home collecting some sweets as they left.
How blessed are we to have been part of God’s plan and been a small part to His Blessings,

Major refurbishment works to TEAMS church are underway

TEAMS Church is undergoing a major refurb!

Leaking gutters and more than 20 years of use and exposure to the harsh equatorial weather have taken their toll on the fabric of TEAMS church and administrative offices (built in 2002) so action was urgently needed before the decaying brickwork caused structural issues.

Whilst on site earlier this year, TEAMS chairman, Duncan Watt met with local builders and agreed a specification of works which, when completed should give the church complex a new lease of life.

New gutters, partial replacement of failing roof sheets, new drainage and soakaways, brickwork repairs and a new 1 m high external render around the base of the church together with a complete external redecoration will transform what had become a very tired building. Whilst these works are being undertaken, new access and landscaping to the front of the church will be provided. This follows the loss of the site frontage and several smaller buildings when the new national road was built in front of TEAMS site last year.

This is a major programme of works for TEAMS and is costing a lot of money. However, the “silver lining” arising from the loss of 10% of our site to the new road is that 75% of the costs of these works will be met from the residue of compensation received from the Roads Authority. The compensation we received for our loss has already been partly spent building a substantial new boundary wall, gates, guard house and cycle store, together, more recently, with a new kitchen and store.

TEAMS church is proud to stand at the centre of the Layibi community and will continue to preach the Word of God and serve those in need.

Please continue to hold TEAMS in your prayers. The challenges we face are growing as the needs in this troubled part of Central Africa get greater. The rich are getting richer, but for the vast majority who live in extreme poverty, life is extremely difficult.

TEAMS organised a Cream Teas fundraising event on August Bank Holiday Monday in St Mary and St Peter’s churchyard in Salcombe Regis, Devon.

Our Lord blessed us with a wonderful sunny afternoon (after a particularly drizzly week) and holidaymakers and locals turned out in great numbers and enjoyed a relaxing afternoon sitting in the churchyard looking down the valley to a glistening sea!

Volunteers baked scones – fruit, plain, gluten-free and cheese. A popular alternative, Chudleighs, was also offered. A large selection of Ugandan crafts was available to purchase, most of which had been made by the sewing ladies who trained in our school. These ladies will be pleased to receive a profit share following these sales.
Overall, a grand total of £945 was raised for the work of TEAMS beating last years amazing total by almost £200!

On behalf of TEAMS, we express our grateful thanks to all who supported this venture including local Waitrose and Co-op stores who kindly donated some clotted cream, jam, milk and butter.

Little did we know that when we posted news of Charles and Susan’s wedding and then the joy of the arrival of Bruce, his son on our blog just a couple of years ago, we would tragically be posting pictures of his funeral so soon after this.
None of us know when our Lord will call us home, nor His reason for taking such as inspirational young Pastor and family man from those who loved him. However, we can be certain that his is now in Glory in heaven.
His funeral and burial service spread over 2 days and an estimated 2,000 attended. The photographs show just how his family, friends and colleagues celebrated his short life.
TEAMS contributed towards the cost of his funeral (as well as his medical bills) so if you wish to help TEAMS restore its reserves, please visit our Giving page and add the reference 4 Pastor Charles to your donation. Thank you.

DEATH ANNOUNCEMENT

It is with great sadness that TEAMS announces the death of its resident Pastor, Charles Ajum (34).

Charles had been TEAMS resident Pastor for almost 5 years and was much loved by his family, congregation and colleagues. He was invited to become a member of TEAMS Ugandan board at the age of 30 and married Susan, a year later. He leaves 2 small boys, Isiah and Bruce.
At the end of 2022 he became unwell and initially was diagnosed with a severely ulcerated Colon, but as the months passed and he did not get better, he went for further tests and just 6 weeks before his death was found to have stage 4 cancer and kidney failure. This was devastating news and so unusual for such a young man.
He was admitted to St Francis Hospital in Kampala for further tests and treatment and started Chemotherapy just 2 weeks before his death which was on 27th May.
TEAMS trustees thank all of you who, like us, have been praying earnestly for Charles’s recovery and also have been generously donating towards Charles’s medical bills which were enormous (there is no NHS in Uganda!). In the end, our Heavenly Father had other plans for this talented young man and we must Trust in Him to provide the next chapter in TEAMS spiritual well-being.
Charles’s funeral and service of celebration of his life is to take place at TEAMS church and grounds on Friday and Saturday 9th-10th June when 2,000 people are expected to attend. TEAMS will be making a large contribution towards this event and should you feel willing and able to contribute to this, please go to our giving page and make a payment into our UK bank account using the details provided. The reference for donations on this occasion is “4 Pastor Charles”

Thank you

May Pastor Charles rest in peace and rise in glory.

Please also pray for our assistant Pastor Joel who unexpectedly finds himself taking on responsibilities of temporary leadership of TEAMS church. Joel is coping well, but has only been with TEAMS for 5 months and with no mentoring from Pastor Charles for almost the entire time he has been with us, has been dropped in the deep end!

UPDATE ON PASTOR CHARLES'S HEALTH

Pastor Charles is still in St Francis Hospital Nsambya Kampala and very unwell.
Scans and tests show he now has stage 4 cancer, very high blood pressure and kidney failure. He is having frequent dialysis and is due to start Chemotherapy today 10th May 2023.
His medical bills went past the 10m/= (Ugandan Shillings) mark (about £2,500) at the beginning of this month and now stand at 10.7m/= . So far TEAMS has paid 4,000,000/= and his family and friends have managed to raise just over 2,000,000/= leaving an outstanding bill of 4,600,000/=. These are huge sums of money in Ugandan terms. The outstanding bill alone represents more than a years salary for Pastor Charles.
Now, with the commencement of Chemo and yet more dialysis, the weekly bill will rise by an estimated 2,000,000/=. This is beyond Charles’s reach and without further significant donations, is also beyond TEAMS’s financial ability to meet.
PLEASE HELP THIS DESPERATE SITUATION AND MAKE A DONATION TO TEAMS TODAY USING THE REFERENCE 4PASTORCHARLES.
Our bank details are shown on our “donate” tab – to be found under “get involved”. If you can Gift Aid your donation, please download our Gift Aid form and complete/sign and return it to us either at admin@teamsonline.org or wattfamily@hotmail.com.
On behalf of Pastor Charles and TEAMS family: THANK YOU!

We don’t just need financial donations. Charles and his family need your prayers too. Below are some prayer points we invite you to pray over.
• Miracle healing for Charles…Make his tumour vanish; remove all secondary cancer (in Charles’s lungs); re-awaken his kidneys and reduce his very high blood pressure.
• Prayers for Charles’s family. Wife Susan – by his hospital bedside 400 miles from home; 2 sons Isaiah (5) and Bruce (2) being looked after by extended family in Gulu; his 2 brothers Solomon and Ogen and his Uncle Martin who is also by his bedside.
• Prayers for TEAMS other staff who are all shocked by this sudden and unexpected health scare. They have all been supporting Charles and voluntarily funded a visit last weekend of 2 staff members and Charles’s youngest brother Ogen to Kampala.
• Prayers for Assistant Pastor Joel – only appointed last November, but for more than 3 months has been running TEAMS church and its associated programmes.
• Prayers that donations flood in for Charles – TEAMS does not want to have to make the decision that further medical treatment cannot be afforded.
The TEAMS board both in the UK and Uganda thank you in advance for your concern and compassion.

TEAMS’s resident Pastor Charles Ajum is seriously unwell and since the beginning of this year has been in and out of hospital in Kampala with dreadful abdominal pains and bleeding.
After tests he was diagnosed as having severe ulcerative colitis and more recently is undergoing treatment for suspected kidney failure.
Charles is a young man in his early 30’s, married, with 2 children and previously enjoyed good health.
Hospital treatment in Uganda is not free and whilst he has already received considerable financial assistance from TEAMS and his family and friends, is facing an outstanding bill estimated to be 2,600,000/= (over £600) until Friday 21st April. Should he need to stay in hospital beyond this date and receive more treatment it will cost more.
His wife and brother are by his side and since their home is 400km’s away in Gulu, they are incurring additional accommodation and feeding costs. Their 2 children are currently being looked after by friends and family, but looming school fees and other costs will be difficult to find as all of Pastor Charles’s salary and savings have been used up in paying his medical bills and expenses.
Are you willing to help TEAMS provide further assistance to help out in this medical emergency?
Please visit our website giving page to find TEAMS bank account details. A contribution of £25 (about 100,000/= Ugandan Shillings) will meet Charles’s daily hospital fees. A contribution of £150 will cover his outstanding bill for the scan he had last week. If you are able to Gift Aid your donation, please download our Gift Aid form and return it to us either by emailing it to Admin@teamsonline.org, or to our chairman and treasurer at wattfamily@hotmail.com The 25% additional amount we can claim from the Government will be of great assistance.

On behalf of TEAMS and Pastor Charles, THANKYOU.__

TEAMS has grown up! It had its 21st birthday this year. What a lot of wonderful things have happened during its ‘childhood’. We have truly been blessed. We hope that we have managed to pass on these blessings to those in Northern Uganda who are vulnerable, have little, or simply needed to get to know our Lord and saviour a little more.
We have so many things to give thanks for this year. What loomed as a nightmare last year – the compulsory acquisition of 10% of our site in Layibi to make way for a new National Road, turned out to be more positive for us than we could have imagined. We have ended up with a wonderful new wall, guard house, bike shelter and plan to build a new kitchen in the New Year – paid for by the UNRA. Sadly, the experience was less positive for those who had no land title and had simply been “squatting” for decades on a small piece of land they called home. More than 100 homes were destroyed to make way for this new dual carriageway. TEAMS has done what it can to assist those who have suffered the most and through its church outreach regularly gives food parcels and aid to struggling locals. We pray that we can find the money to build some new homes on our land to accommodate these people.
During this year the high-level water tank above our borehole sprang a leak and threatened to burst. A new one was purchased, but to our horror, the existing metal tank tower was found to be rusting away. A replacement would be very costly and well outside our financial capability. A series of appeals were launched. A number of fund-raising activities took place in Devon where the UK board members are now based and included a very successful Bank Holiday Cream Teas event in our village churchyard. During the year a friend and former missionary in Arua in northern Uganda, the Revd. Handel Bennett passed away. He retired to Devon a long time ago and initially was a visiting preacher in our church during which time we shared our experiences in Africa. We were amazed to learn from his widow Joan that Handel had left a legacy to TEAMS which, with his family’s agreement we have put towards the replacement water tank tower. During our visit to Gulu in October the replacement tower was commissioned and almost completed when we left in November, I am very pleased to say is now finished and the borehole water supply is working once again. The Ugandan Board formally named the replacement structure “Handel’s Tower” and a small plaque will be placed on the tower during 2023.
Our visit to Uganda during October and November this year was the first we had been able to make since March 2020 when we left on the last commercial flight out of the country before Uganda closed its borders due to the Pandemic. So much has changed. There is more development, paved streets in Gulu, and even a new maternity wing in the main hospital. However, this year’s failed harvests (due to too much rain at the wrong time) has increased poverty amongst the most vulnerable and we witnessed this particularly when visiting our remote smallholding at CooPee, which is about 20km’s north of Gulu close to South Sudan. We have visited many times and have always been well received before but were not prepared for such an excited and warm welcome from the locals. We thought you had forgotten us they told us. The consequences the pandemic have had on global travel had not filtered down to them, in our media filled world this seems unusual to say the least but their main focus is on feeding the family and staying alive.
Following our long-held vision to transfer management control to our local Ugandan Board, TEAMS UK board decided that the time was now right to start this process. Our Ugandan lawyer was asked to create a new Ugandan limited liability company, not-for-profit and without shareholders. I am pleased to report this was established during the 3rd quarter of 2022. Since that time, further steps have been taken to transfer all Ugandan assets from the UK entity to the new company and to start the process to establish “New Co” as a licensed NGO in Uganda. Additional Ugandan directors have been appointed, including one of our former Agape orphans who, having obtained bookkeeping and accountancy qualifications at Gulu University is now our assistant finance director, TEAMS staff officer and our micro finance loans officer. What a success story for him and our orphan programme! My wife and I will remain on New-Co’s board for 12-18 months to ensure a successful transition but with 5 Ugandan directors, it is clear that full management control is in local hands.
2022 saw a reversal of 5 years of decline in TEAMS finance and programmes. It is too early to say we are entering a period of growth, but both boards have decided to restart one of our former programmes – Ministry within the prisons in Gulu. Rosalind always visits the Women’s prison when we are there and this time she went twice. After 2 and a half years absence, it was amazing that many of the guards and several of the inmates remembered her and gave her a very warm welcome. She was invited to share the Word with all 130 inmates and allowed to mix freely with many of the prisoners. We also met the senior prison governor for northern Uganda again and during our discussion reached an agreement with her for the recommencement of a small-scale ministry within the main men’s prison in Gulu. She is a strong Christian lady who is very supportive of the idea of sharing the Word and God’s love with her charges.
Our final news from TEAMS this year is that we have appointed a second Pastor – Pastor Joel Okello to head our Prison Ministry initiative. He will of course support our resident Pastor Charles, and together we look forward in 2023 to making a really positive Christian impact in the Gulu district.
Thank you for your prayer and financial support during 2022. Without our loyal supporters, we could not sustain TEAMS and therefore would not be able to reach out to a community which has so little. Our fundraising continues as there are so many needy who need help and the various initiatives and outreach programmes cost a lot, like the UK prices and inflation are high, so we and those we help say a very heartfelt thank you!
On behalf of the UK board of TEAMS wish you all a peaceful, joyous and healthy New Year.
May our Lord bless you richly.

TEAMS IS 21 YEARS OLD THIS YEAR!

It is hard to believe that TEAMS is now 21 years old and has definitely “come of age”!

During this time, we have spread the word of God to countless people, helped teach hundreds to read and write English; taught many a Skill-for-life in our vocational training centre; supported more than 30 orphans through their education until adulthood; Ministered in many prisons and hospitals and built and continue to run a community borehole. These successes and many other beneficial programmes have only been possible due to the generosity and loyal support of you, our willing supporters.

On behalf of TEAMS boards both here in the UK and in Uganda we THANK YOU FROM THE BOTTOM OF OUR HEARTS.

From inception, TEAMS vision was to be the catalyst in its quest to spread the word and love of God to people in East Africa. Gradually our local Trustees and managers have been encouraged to take more and more responsibility for running TEAMS and now, after 21 years of leading, encouraging and nurturing, our Ugandan staff are ready to take over all management control leaving the UK supporters with just the financial control. Uganda has made great steps in starting to raise funds locally, but it has to be recognised that it will not be financially self sufficient for some time yet.

To implement our vision of passing more responsibility to Uganda, The UK Board has decided that some legal restructuring is necessary. The first step of this is to establish a new, not-for-profit limited liability company in Uganda. This company will have no shareholders so the company itself is the entity which will own all of TEAMS’s assets in Uganda. We are pleased to announce that at the end of July, this stage was completed with the registration of The East African Missionary Society Uganda Ltd. The next phase is to transfer our land titles, Ugandan bank accounts and all other assets to this company.

In setting up this new company, we are pleased to have secured Pastor Morish Okello as an additional board member making 4 Ugandan members and 2 UK ones. This ensures that all management decisions will have a Ugandan majority, although the UK will still exercise full financial control.

Please pray for a smooth and successful transfer during this restructuring process and also for all of our Ugandan Board members.

The cost-of-living crisis we are experiencing in the UK is being felt right around the world. Here in the UK, we are blessed to have a government which not only funds our NHS, but also is doing its best to help the most vulnerable, particularly with the soaring energy costs. Its not a 100% solution, but its much better than most 3rd world countries get from their leaders.

In Uganda, where TEAMS operate, there is virtually no social service support for the needy and thus, if you have no job or are unable to produce your own food, the situation is desperate. The worldwide Pandemic has severely impacted Uganda, especially the poorest, leaving many hungry and often starving.

Although TEAMS continues to struggle financially, we trust in our Lord to provide so the board has decided to do something to help those members of TEAMS church congregation who are either finding it very difficult to put food on the table, or through old age or poor health, can no longer support themselves.

Pastor Charles and the Ugandan management board have come up with the idea that monthly food parcels would be delivered to those whom the church elders consider to be most in need. 4 people have initially been identified and have already received several kilos of beans, posho (maize flour), some salt and soap. The photographs above show recipients being presented with their food parcels outside the Pastor’s office at The Sanctuary Church after the first Sunday service in August.

Sadly, one of the recipients died a week ago and TEAMS supported her family by contributing to the funeral expenses. Another member of TEAMS congregation is being selected from the long list of those needing help.

If you are able to help us in this humanitarian outreach, please visit our website giving page. A donation of just £10 will enable us to support a needy family for a month.

Yesterday in Sidmouth Devon, the All Saints Church crafting group held a coffee, cake and craft sale in aid of TEAMS. There were many delicious cakes to eat and some wonderful crafts (and plants) to buy. The weather was kind, the sun shone so people ventured out, resulting in a packed house from 10.00 am until late in the afternoon.
It was a great opportunity to raise TEAMS profile locally and get TEAMS message across.
We are so grateful to the Crafting Group for their continued support for TEAMS and also the many volunteers who helped with the teas and coffees, cakemaking and washing up. Particular thanks are due to Mr and Mrs Gregory who opened their house for this event.
More than £850 was raised which is simply fantastic and has added significantly to our Lenten Appeal.
THANK YOU SO MUCH!

“STITCHES” UPDATE
We are delighted to say that the running of Stitches Sewing School is now being headed up by Agnes, supported by her husband Pastor Samuel. This is a great step forward towards TEAMS objective of self-empowering the Ugandan people.
Their enthusiasm and commitment to helping the less fortunate in the community is admirable and with schools in Uganda having been closed for almost 2 years we are certain many will be thrilled to return to their leaning once again.

We have just received the results for the last set of DIT examinations. These were sat under extremely challenging circumstance due to very tight Covid restrictions and with very short notification. Unfortunately, not all students could return as many families had returned to far off villages due to the Pandemic, but those who remained locally were keen to try despite not having done any lessons for 18 months.
The Board are truly delighted to report that everyone passed their Practical exams with flying colours, many achieving an A+ which is wonderful.
The highest number ever also passed the Theory exams too, so congratulations and very well done to students and teacher alike!!

Following the long Ugandan lock-down, TEAMS church has reopened again and our young Pastor, Charles Ajum, is growing its congregation. Adult numbers are about double the number of attendees at the beginning of 2020 with between 70 and 80 adults. We are delighted that more and more local people are coming to receive the Word.
On Sunday 24th October TEAMS hosted a Youth Sunday event. 180 youth and young adults plus about 70 younger children attended from various churches in the Gulu area. The programme began at 9:30am and ran until 4:00pm. The church decided to prepare “KATOGO” as a simple meal for all of those attending, Katogo is cassava cut into pieces and cooked together with beans. This was very well received as many are hungry and provided a tummy filling staple and with the beans a nutritious meal which is loved by all the locals. Photographs of this event will be uploaded as soon as possible and then you will be able to see that everyone was having a great time and wearing their best clothes.
They were all delighted to be allowed to socialize after so long and thrilled that churches are once again open.
Charles gave a talk about the transformation from childhood to adulthood and the value of a child. (Psalm.127:3) Other topics covered included life skills, humility, working hard and being committed to the work of the Lord.
The weather was kind so there were many outside activities too. Please pray for this momentum to continue and that Pastor Charles is able to reach out to more and more people.

A sad time for TEAMS

Last month, we had to say goodbye to 9 of our loyal staff; a truly harrowing experience for them and the TEAMS management Board.
The Pandemic has put paid to any fundraising for TEAMS for the past 17 months and with many of our long-standing supporters finding themselves with reduced incomes, or with concerns about their businesses, TEAMS income is less than 30% of what it was before Covid. Our financial reserves have been exhausted and to prevent complete failure, after much prayer and debate, the Boards in both the UK and Uganda have had to dramatically prune its programmes and budgets.
We are fortunate that many of our core programmes have reached maturity, reaching the point where our objectives have been met. Ordinarily, we would have been starting new programmes to reach more people, but for the moment that is not possible. We pray however that following this painful action, TEAMS will emerge stronger and better place to rise to future challenges.
We have said goodbye to the 3 sewing ladies who were part of SEAMS – our commercial sewing enterprise. With tourism stopped in its tracks, the Ugandan safari lodges who were good customers of SEAMS are not ordering new stock. Furthermore, with schools having been closed for such a long time, the staple part of SEAMS order books – making school uniforms – has also dried up. Our ladies have decided to start a smaller business themselves so TEAMS has given the sewing machines they have been using to them, in addition to paying them at least double the statutory minimum redundancy amounts. It is good to see that through our mentoring these ladies, they now feel confident to set up a micro business themselves.
Similarly, we have also decided we can no longer afford to employ cooks to feed our staff at lunchtime. These two women have decided to set up in business themselves and cook for our remaining staff and others in the immediate community. We have donated pots and pans they used previously to them to kick start their concern. From now on, TEAMS will pay a fixed price per staff meal which will save TEAMS money whilst providing the seed-corn for the new business to get established.
James, our agricultural programme manager is also leaving us. It has been impossible to make this programme viable, and whilst we had hoped to turn it into an educational one. Our lack of resources meant this was not able to happen. He has been given some of his tools and will continue to farm part of our land on a private basis. The local community are also taking plots of land on a tenancy basis. Land suitable for cultivation in Layibi is now scarce as more and more development takes place. Thus, TEAMS will generate a small income from our land instead of making a loss on this programme. Offering plots of land to the original local population (who are not part of the “new money” group who are moving in, is proving very popular.
With site security being one of our most expensive programmes, a complete rethink of how we keep our site safe has been undertaken. Covid showed us the way forward! During the lockdown, 2 or 3 of our security staff volunteered to live permanently on site and thus found that it suited them better to do 2 – 3 weekly shifts rather than a series of 12-hour stints. We can now manage with 3 full time guards rather than 5 working shifts. Again, this helps TEAMS to reduce its costs.
The staff who have not been made redundant have volunteered to take a 10% salary reduction for the next 6 months in solidarity with their former colleagues. The Ugandan management team have led from the front and agreed to take a 20% cut in their salaries. This shows just how much of a family TEAMS is.
Please pray for those staff who no longer have a job with TEAMS. It is a very difficult situation to be in as unemployment is very high and job prospects are low. Pray also for their families and for our Lord’s provision. Please also remember our remaining staff and the sacrifice they have made by agreeing to a voluntary reduction in their pay. TEAMS does not pay high salaries and with inflation putting up basic commodity prices, they are going to find it difficult to manage.
If you can spare any money at this time, please do pray about making a donation to TEAMS. Our “Donations” page provides our bank account details, or if a BACs bank transfer is not something you wish to do, please get in touch with the chairman of our UK Trustees, Duncan Watt, who will advise how other forms of financial support can be made.

He has recently taken on the chair of another charity and due to this commitment did not feel able to offer himself for a further term.

I, and the board have really enjoyed working with Adrian. His helpful advice and experience, particularly on the financial side of things has been a great benefit to TEAMS. Thankfully, he has agreed to participate and continue to advise as a “friend of TEAMS” for the foreseeable future, something for which we are most grateful. He will also continue as one of our “prayer partners”.

We wish Adrian every success in his new role and express our heartfelt thanks for all that he has done during the past 2 years.

Thank you for praying for TEAMS Sewing Students.

As indicated in our last update regarding TEAMS sewing school, our Year 2 students have just taken their DIT examinations. D I T stands for the Department of Industrial Training and is the vocational educational arm of the Ugandan Governments Ministry of Education. These exams would “normally” have been sat in February but due to the pandemic restrictions and schools remaining closed in Uganda for much of the past year, the exams were delayed.
Both teachers and students have worked very hard to catch up to prepare for the exams and although fewer students managed to return to school than had originally been in the class, those who did were enthusiastic and studied well.
The Theory paper was a challenge in parts with some rather unusual terminology (dare we say mistakes in the questions?) but we are hopeful that everyone will have managed most of the paper well.
The practical for both the Formal Exam and the Modular went very well and everyone felt they had done a good job. Of course we have to await the official results which will not be out for a few months but we are hopeful that they will be good for everyone!
Results are rarely issued within 6 months, but with no precedent for examinations being held at this time of year, who knows when we will officially receive the results. Please watch this space!

Some good news we’d like to share with you is that a generous supporter has offered to fund a Bursary to 1 student to cover fees and costs associated with attending our course.
A very deserving and enthusiastic student has been selected; one who without this help was going to have to leave because her family were no longer able to afford the fees. She was absolutely thrilled to be told that she wouldn’t have to pay fees for this year!

TEAMS already effectively sponsors this course because we only strive to break even. Our fees and charges are considerably lower than other schools in the area (by a factor of 3 or 4 times!) so we do reach out to those students who are less able to afford this important form of vocational training, we also feed them every day. If you would like to help fund this programme, please do visit our “Giving” page and make a donation to TEAMS bank account. It costs a student just over £100 per year to attend our school but all contributions, whether great or small, are always most welcome!.

Born on Sunday 7th March he and mum are doing well and both were back home within 12 hours! Dad was preaching in church at the time so Mum and son had to wait to be collected (by Charles on TEAMS motorbike!)

Charles and Susan have named him LUBANGATWERO, KETLINE, BRUCE, AJUM

LUBANGATWERO means God is Able in the local language

KETLINE is derived from an amalgamation of the names of 2 deceased family members, and

BRUCE is the name of the newest UK trustee, himself a retired vicar. What an honour!

AJUM is Pastor Charles’s family name.

After being postponed 5 months by the Pandemic, students (and one of the teachers) of our sewing school “Stitches” are sitting Government examinations in Tailoring later this month.

The exams are over 2 days and an invigilator is sent from Kampala to oversee the event. Day 1 is the Theory paper - 2 and a half hours, Day 2 is the 6 hour practical exam during which students have to make a garment, details of which are not announced until the start of the exam!

“Stitches” has achieved fame for achieving 100% success in the practical examination since it commenced entering students for the Department of Industrial Training (DIT)’s examination. Few schools have achieved this - so no pressure on this years students then!!

As the theory paper is set in English and our students come from less educated backgrounds and struggle to cope with reading in their own language, let alone English, we do not achieve such success with this section of the exam. Nevertheless, students do receive a certificate for passing each paper and it means a great deal to those less academically qualified to receive success in something.

This year it is particularly challenging as the school had to be closed for 8 months during 2020 and thus parts of the syllabus have not been covered in such detail as usual. The Government is trying hard to return to the normal school year programme and therefore has foreshortened the usual timescale. However for non-examination levels the whole academic year has been scraped.

PLEASE PRAY FOR OUR STUDENTS AS THEY PREPARE FOR AND SIT THESE EXAMINATIONS.

Pray for guidance and ability to understand the questions and answer accurately, both for the Theory papers and the Practical and that they all produce work to the best of their ability.
We ask for special prayers for Christine, the schools assistant teacher who has bravely requested to sit these examinations alongside her students. She was taken on to our staff in the full knowledge that she had no paper qualifications at this level, but her teaching abilities and general knowledge of sewing were recognised and she has proved to be a great asset and complimentary to the practical talent of our head teacher John Bosco.

Finally we give thanks for the fact that through the generosity of our supporters we have been able to continue with this important area of vocational training to some of the more needy people in the Gulu area.
In these difficult times our finances are in a fragile state, if you can support us in this and other work, please do visit our donation page and give what ever you can.

TEAMS UK is proud of the fact that almost 100% of all funds received are spent in Uganda through our sister organisation, TEAMS Uganda.

WOW - 2020, a year like no other!
Across the world so many have died from Covid-19 and others are facing difficulties that they could never have ever dreamt of before the pandemic arrived.
We want to thank you so much for your continued support - financial and with prayer - in this most challenging of years.
More than ever this year, TEAMS has been committed to looking after those who work for us, their immediate and extended families and the local community. In the UK, we almost take for granted the wonderful state support and NHS system that we enjoy. In countries like Uganda where there is far less Government help and a vastly inferior health system, many adults and children live in fear and on the breadline, with no one to turn to when things go wrong. When we speak with our staff, we hear first-hand just how very grateful they and the community are for the help and encouragement TEAMS has been able to provide through this difficult time. Without your help, this would not be possible.
The Trustees of TEAMS wish to take this opportunity to send all of our supporters, Christmas blessings of Peace, Joy, Love and Hope to you and your families this Christmastime and throughout the coming new year, which we trust will be rather easier than the one that is almost behind us.

We were thrilled to receive generous support from the Craft Group of All Saints Church Sidmouth, Devon.
During the Pandemic this group has turned its attention to making (amongst other things) face masks. These were sold to raise funds for Charities and TEAMS was one of those selected to benefit.
Well done crafters for turning adversity into an advantage for us!

Thank you for your generous support ladies! STAY SAFE!

TEAMS Reopens in Uganda!

After 7 months of enforced closure, in accordance with the Ugandan Governments recommendations, TEAMS has reopened its site and restarted its programmes this month. The effects of Covid-19 are still being felt in Northern Uganda, but with reported deaths in the country still being under 1,000 since the pandemic was declared it seems the country has so far escaped the worst.
We received a surprise visit from Government inspectors at 6.00pm 4 days before we were due to reopen. We were complimented on our facilities and precautions that had been put in place to ensure safety and passed the inspection with flying colours.
Staff were keen to return to the site and our vocational training school has been permitted to reopen its examination year class. 1st year students must sadly await further instructions from the Government before being allowed to return.
The site was scrubbed and cleaned from top to bottom and the place is festooned with bottles of sanitisers! Everyone must wear masks except when eating. Social distancing, both inside and out is vigorously enforced by our security team and all the staff and students are obeying the rules so will hopefully stay safe. Things may be a little different, but the joy at being back to work is evident when we speak with people via Skype.
We ask for your prayers as we ease back into some sense of normality during the coming weeks and trust that there will be no second spike there. We seek our Lord’s protection from this dreadful virus for TEAMS staff and all those we serve in Uganda.
