₦100,000 (~US$75) used to mean something. It still does, just not the thing you think. 

With Nigeria's headline inflation sitting at 15.43% as of July 2026, according to the National Bureau of Statistics, the naira in your account is quietly worth less every month you leave it sitting still.  

That was the starting point for "Beyond Your Salary," a Techloy community event held on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, where financial strategist Titobi Oreolorun and investment professional Elizabeth Omowunmi Babalola joined host Adaobi Okozor to talk about what to actually do with your money before inflation does it for you. 

That gap between what you earn and what it can still buy shows up as a strange kind of poverty. You are earning more than you did two years ago, and on paper, things should feel lighter. Yet the money still disappears before the month runs out, and you are back to counting down to the next alert, because the raise you got was never really competing against your old salary.  

It was competing against inflation, and inflation rarely loses quietly.

The Problem Isn't How Much You Earn 

Adaobi opened the conversation by pointing out that the economy has shifted, and so has people's relationship with money. She asked Titobi, founder of Tito Finance, what belief he held five years ago that has since changed.

His answer cut straight to the point. "Your money should actually be sent on an errand to go work for more money for you, rather than just you keeping it in savings or probably in the bank," he said. Holding cash, once seen as safe, is now one of the fastest ways to lose value. 

Isaac Kanye, cohost of the Road to 30 podcast, made a similar point in a separate conversation on this topic. He used to believe everyone needed millions to live a happy life, until he realised that chasing a moving target is a losing game.

"The goalpost for wealth keeps changing, and if you're not careful, you can spend your life chasing an amount that keeps getting further and further away," he said. His advice is to set a number that is specific to you, and to live your life while working toward it. 

That same restlessness, the sense that more money should have solved the problem by now, is exactly what keeps a lot of good earners stuck. Isaac points to a mistake many people make without realising it.

"Most people struggle because they approach personal finance with a one-size-fits-all mentality," he explained. Everyone repeats the same rules, like save 20% or invest 30%, but those numbers were never meant to apply to everybody equally. "Personal finance should be personal," he said. 

Elizabeth, who works with Money Africa, made a similar case using a simple example. If you want to buy a laptop by December, don't just hope the money appears. Work backwards. Decide how much you need to save every month to get there, and if you don't have it yet, ask how else you can raise it, whether that's a scholarship, a delayed timeline, or asking someone who believes in your growth.  

She used her own story to prove it. She once needed money for a financial planning certification and didn't have it, but because she had already been clear about her goal, funding it became easy when the right person showed up. As she put it, "you should start planning towards your future from now." 

What ₦100,000 Left Over Can Actually Do 

Once the goal is clear, the next question is what to do with the money. Adaobi asked what someone should do if they have ₦100,000 left after covering their expenses each month.

Titobi's response was blunt. "If you have ₦100,000 left after your salary in Nigeria right now, you're one of- you are even rich; you are wealthy," he said.  

Then he did the math. Put that ₦100,000 a month into an S&P 500 index fund for 40 years, factor in 7% inflation against 8 to 10% historical growth, and you land at roughly ₦823 million. Even ₦10,000 a month, done consistently over 20 years, adds up to real money. As he put it, "wealth is not grown quickly; it is grown consistently." 

Elizabeth agreed but added a caution. Before any of that, build an emergency fund first, ideally three months of your living expenses, kept somewhere accessible.

"When you are investing, it's important to have an emergency fund," she said, so that a short-term problem never forces you to break a long-term plan. And once that cushion exists, she said, "the goal is for your investment portfolio to beat inflation," not just to exist. 

With September approaching, several funding programmes and startup competitions are still open to founders looking for capital, mentorship, market access, or support to scale their businesses.

/1. Swiss Re Foundation Shine 2027 

Early-stage climate ventures working on urban challenges can apply for the Swiss Re Foundation’s Shine 2027 programme, which focuses on solutions for urban decarbonisation, climate adaptation and inclusive development. 

The programme operates across eight global chapters, including Bangalore, Bratislava, Cape Town, London, Manila, Mexico City, New York and Zurich. Selected ventures receive a combination of grant funding, technical expertise, strategic guidance, leadership coaching and access to climate innovation networks. The Swiss Re Foundation also says it may consider additional funding after ventures demonstrate evidence of scale. 

The programme is particularly relevant to founders working on practical solutions that can help cities deal with issues such as rising temperatures, flooding, resource scarcity, and infrastructure disruption.

/2. AIM Startup Competition 2026 

Startups working in agribusiness, energy, ICT, transport, and logistics can apply for the AIM Startup Competition in Montenegro. 

The competition has two tracks. The Seed Track is aimed at early-traction startups that have raised little or no capital, while the Growth Track is for startups that have raised more than $582,107 (€500,000) and up to $5 million (€5 million). 

Finalists will pitch at the AIM Investment Conference in Montenegro in October, in front of investors, government officials, and other ecosystem players. The winner will also receive access to the AIM investor network, financing partners, a two-year coworking opportunity, and a place in a 12-month accelerator programme. 

The competition is open to founder-led startups from around the world that are looking to expand regionally or internationally.

Burnout doesn't always begin with too much work, at least not in the way people usually imagine it.

Sometimes, you're doing everything you're supposed to do. You put in the hours, meet the deadlines, solve the problems, and keep showing up. From the outside, things might even look fine. But the promotion doesn't come. The project you spent weeks working on barely gets acknowledged. The money doesn't seem to match the effort, and after a while, you start wondering whether the work is taking you anywhere at all.

That can wear on a person too.

"Burnout really is hand in hand with fulfillment," says Temiloluwa Kayode, a product designer with more than five years of experience. For him, part of it comes down to "putting in effort, and you're not seeing results as you want."

The result doesn't have to be financial. It could be career growth, recognition, or the feeling that the work is making some kind of impact. You can work incredibly hard and still feel fulfilled when the effort seems to be leading somewhere.

The trouble begins when that equation stops making sense.

When effort and reward stop matching

"You can put 100% effort into something and get a result that feels proportional to that effort. That can be tiring, but it can also be satisfying," Kayode says. "The problem is when you keep putting in 100% and feel like you are getting 20% back."

Startups across Africa and the Middle East raised a combined $239.63 million this week, based on disclosed funding rounds tracked by Techloy, with investor capital flowing primarily into AI security and fintech. Two deals accounted for most of the week's funding activity.

1. Alice, $140 million, AI security, Israel 

Alice, which rebranded from ActiveFence in January, helps test clients' AI models for vulnerabilities and offers guardrails to protect against them during production. Apax Digital led the round with Samsung, SentinelOne, Norwest, and CRV joining, bringing Alice's funding total to $280 million and giving the company a valuation of $700 million to $800 million. This capital will be used to grow and expand.

2. Fasset, $68 million, Fintech, UAE 

Fasset runs a Sharia-compliant digital bank that operates on stablecoins and provides accounts, cards and cross-border payments in Asia, the Middle East and Africa. Japan's SBI Group led the Series C round, with Fasset reaching a valuation of $1 billion, just four months after its $51 million Series B. It will use this capital to scale its stablecoin banking platform, with plans to set up a joint digital bank in Malaysia with the Japanese company.

Startups across Latin America raised a combined $62.35 million this week, based on disclosed funding rounds, with investor capital flowing primarily into fintech, spanning corporate benefits, vehicle financing, open finance, cross-border payments, and financial services for small businesses. Energy technology also attracted significant investment, while WhatsApp infrastructure secured early-stage funding to expand across global markets.

1. Flash, $28.8M (R$150M), Fintech, Brazil

Flash operates a platform that brings corporate benefits, employee management, and company expenses into a single system, helping businesses manage areas such as meal benefits, HR processes, and corporate spending. The company serves more than 60,000 clients and more than 2 million employees.

The company raised a $28.8 million (R$150 million) Series D led by Battery Ventures and Kevin Efrusy, with participation from Endeavour Catalyst. Flash will use the funding to accelerate product development, including an AI copilot for HR processes, deepen its use of artificial intelligence, and expand its sales team.

2. Bia Energy, $18.5M, Colombia

Bia Energy is a technology-enabled energy company that helps businesses monitor and manage their electricity consumption through smart metering, consumption analytics, and digital tools. The company serves more than 4,000 businesses in Colombia and is expanding beyond energy commercialisation into distributed solar generation and software.

They raised $18.5 million in a round led by Kaszek, with participation from Endeavour Catalyst, RA Capital, EWA Capital, and the Inter-American Development Bank. The funding will support Bia's expansion into solar generation and utility software as it develops three business lines.

Startups across Asia raised a combined $246.9 million this week, based on disclosed funding rounds tracked by Techloy. Investor capital flowed heavily into AI and deep-tech, with Gestala and South Korean AI startup Wrtn accounting for more than half of the disclosed funding. Several aerospace and space-tech startups also attracted significant capital.

/1. Gestala, $84M, Brain-computer interface, China 

Shanghai-based Gestala has raised about $84 million (RMB 570 million) to push its ultrasound-based brain-computer interface technology further. The company secured the capital through an Angel round and an Angel+ round, with HSG, Lens Technology, Sinovation Ventures, C Capital, Dalton Venture, Seas Capital, Tsing Song Capital and Gobi Partners among the investors. 

Gestala is developing BCI technology that uses functional ultrasound imaging, focused ultrasound, and AI models to observe, decode, and modulate activity deep within the brain. The fresh capital will go toward expanding the company’s operations and advancing development of the technology. 

Western Europe just had its hottest summer on record. According to the Copernicus Climate Change Service, June and July averaged 21.62°C, nearly 2.8°C above normal and higher than the previous record set in 2022, with repeated heatwaves pushing temperatures above 40°C across Spain, Portugal, and France. Against that backdrop, three shade-routing tools appeared over the summer: Cool Routes (June), Geuneullo (July), and Yandex Maps’ Green routes (August), preceded by HEAL's expansion to 80 German cities in May.

This timing isn’t only about extreme heat. Navigation is becoming contextual, taking into account more than just the shape of the street: heat, air quality, noise, physical strain. Green Paths, a beta planner from the University of Helsinki's Digital Geography Lab, has let residents choose quieter or less polluted walking and cycling routes for years. It is not shade routing, but it is the same idea arriving early. 

How shade routing actually works

Modern shade-routing tools start by figuring out where the shadows fall. Three technical approaches have emerged. 

• Geometric: calculates the position of the sun and combines it with 3D models of buildings, terrain, and trees to determine where shade falls. Geuneullo, Germany’s shaded.ors engine, and HEAL use versions of this approach.
• Biophysical: estimates the total heat load a pedestrian would feel, combining temperature, humidity, surfaces, and solar radiation into mean radiant temperature (MRT) — the basis of Cool Routes.
• Satellite-based: recognizes tree canopies from multispectral imagery, then calculates how much of a route passes beneath them, which is Yandex Maps' method for its Green routes feature.

Who's building it

Cool Routes (Arizona State University), unveiled in June 2026, factors in hourly weather, tree cover, building shadows, and MRT. It found cooler alternatives for more than 70% of test trips, cutting the heat load for walkers by about 2.5°C on average without significantly increasing distance. For now, it covers the ASU campus in Tempe and remains a research tool rather than a city-scale public product.

HEAL (Germany) uses geodata to calculate shade from buildings and vegetation alongside the pedestrian road network. Its development also drew on research involving older adults and other heat-vulnerable groups, with the aim of routing people through parks and other cooler areas rather than exposed streets. The algorithm was modeled on roughly 10,000 pedestrian trips and piloted in Heidelberg before extending to 80 major German cities.

The National Shade Map (UCLA and American Forests), launched in June 2025, covers more than 360 U.S. cities and shows shade from trees and buildings at noon, 3 p.m., and 6 p.m. Rather than offering turn-by-turn navigation, it is designed for uses such as evaluating school routes, bus stops, and parks.

Geuneullo 그늘로, roughly "to the shade" (South Korea), launched in July 2026, calculates the sun’s position and the shadows cast by buildings and trees at a chosen time and offers users not just the shortest walking route but the most shaded one. The app also shows what share of a route runs through shade, and advises which side of a bus or subway car to sit on to avoid direct sun. By August 5, 2026, it had reached number one among free navigation apps in Korea's App Store, ahead of Google Maps, Kakao Map and Naver Map.

Google Maps, the world’s most widely used mapping app, has yet to release a feature like that. In November 2025, Android Authority uncovered a "Prefer shade" setting in an APK teardown of the app. The feature appeared designed to let users favor shadier streets, distinguish between sunlit and shaded sections, and show estimated time spent in direct sunlight. However, the setting was not functional at the time, and Google has not officially announced or confirmed a public launch since.

Yandex Maps Green Routes, launched in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, in August 2026, is the first deployment of this kind of feature in Central Asia. Yandex Maps operates in 30 countries, and Tashkent is the first city to get a full rollout — powered by an ML algorithm trained on satellite imagery. The tool counts a stretch of sidewalk as shaded only once tree cover reaches 60% of its length, and total shade is not the only factor. The algorithm also checks how evenly the shade is distributed along the route and how long the sunny gaps run.  

Where this is going

Shade is becoming a measurable feature of the urban environment, on par with transit access or air quality, and every part of the chain is doing something different. Cities are mapping their tree canopies and planning new planting around them. Researchers are refining exactly how to calculate heat load. Map and navigation services are turning that knowledge into a specific route for a specific person.

None of it adds up to a standard yet, but the overall direction is consistent. The map is starting to account for the person walking, not just the road they are walking on.

Nearly every form builder claims conditional logic. Almost none of them mean the same thing by it, and the differences only surface once you are three weeks into building something the tool cannot express.

Before comparing platforms, it is worth separating the four capabilities that get sold under one label.

Four kinds of conditional logic

Display logic. Show or hide a field based on a previous answer. Universal, table stakes, and what most tools mean when they advertise the feature.

Calculated logic. Conditions evaluated against computed values rather than direct answers. Show a field when a total exceeds a threshold, when a date falls inside a range, or when three prior answers combine to indicate risk. Substantially less common than display logic.

Routing logic. Conditions that determine what happens after submission: which approver receives it, which system it writes to, which confirmation the respondent gets. This is workflow rather than form behaviour, and many form builders have none of it.

Cross-form logic. Conditions evaluated against data from a different form or an external record. The respondent's answer in step one changes what step three asks. Rare, and the capability that separates process platforms from form builders.

Establish which you need before shortlisting. Teams routinely buy for display logic and discover the requirement was routing.

1. Jotform

Jotform's logic is broad and accessible, covering show and hide, skip logic, calculations, and conditional emails, with a builder that stays comprehensible as rules accumulate.

Its ceiling shows in governance rather than capability. Large rule sets become difficult to audit, and there is limited support for documenting why a rule exists, which matters when the person who built it has left.

Best for: Teams needing broad logic without enterprise complexity.

2. FormAssembly

FormAssembly covers display and calculated logic within forms, and extends into routing and cross-form conditions through its Workflow feature, where a submission's content determines which approver receives it and what the next form asks.

Prefilled Salesforce data can also participate in conditions, so logic can branch on what the organisation already knows about the respondent rather than only on what they have just typed. For a form builder with conditional logic spanning process rather than presentation, that combination is the differentiator.

The trade-off is configuration weight. Building this takes longer than building the equivalent in a lighter tool, and the pricing assumes an enterprise buyer.

Best for: Enterprise processes where logic determines routing, not just visibility.

3. Cognito Forms

Cognito Forms implements logic unusually well for its price point, with calculations, repeating sections, and conditional pages that work cleanly and are pleasant to configure.

Where it stops is after submission. Routing to different approvers based on content, and conditions referencing external records, are outside what it does.

Best for: Sophisticated in-form logic at accessible cost.

4. Gravity Forms

For WordPress organisations, Gravity Forms offers strong conditional logic across fields, pages, notifications, and confirmations, with an add-on ecosystem extending it further.

The dependency is structural. Your logic runs on your WordPress installation, inheriting its performance, security posture, and update risk.

Best for: WordPress organisations wanting logic on owned infrastructure.

5. Typeform

Typeform's branching is well designed for the conversational format, with logic jumps that make questionnaires feel responsive rather than bureaucratic.

Depth is limited relative to the enterprise platforms, and heavily nested rule sets become awkward. Enterprise buyers should also confirm which capabilities their specific plan includes.

Best for: Consumer-facing forms where branching should feel natural.

6. Formstack

Formstack handles conditional logic across fields and pages, and extends it into conditional document generation, which is genuinely distinctive. Different submission content produces a different generated document.

Verify plan tier coverage during evaluation, since capability distribution is uneven across Formstack's plans.

Best for: Logic that determines document output.

7. Fillout

Fillout offers modern conditional logic including calculations and branching, with a generous free tier and broad native integrations for a platform at its stage.

Enterprise buyers should weigh vendor maturity as a separate consideration from capability. The logic is capable. The company is young.

Best for: Teams wanting current-generation logic without enterprise commitment.

8. Zoho Forms

Zoho Forms provides solid conditional logic with native connections across the Zoho suite, which makes it economical for organisations already in that ecosystem.

Evaluate suite components on their own merits rather than assuming parity with the flagship products. Forms is competent rather than category-leading.

Best for: Zoho-committed organisations.

Performance is a real constraint

Something rarely mentioned in feature comparisons: conditional logic has a performance cost, and it becomes visible sooner than most teams expect.

Rules evaluate in the browser. A form with several hundred conditions, particularly ones referencing calculated values that recompute on every keystroke, will feel sluggish on a mid-range phone over a mobile connection, which describes a substantial share of your respondents.

If your form is long and heavily conditional, test it on a genuinely modest device rather than the laptop you built it on. The difference is often the gap between a form people complete and one they abandon at question fourteen, and no amount of logic sophistication compensates for a page that stutters.

Splitting a heavily conditional form into a multi-step sequence usually resolves it, because only the active step's rules need evaluating.

Where conditional logic projects go wrong

Three failure patterns recur, and none of them are product defects.

Undocumented rules. A form with sixty conditions and no record of why any of them exist becomes unmaintainable within a year. Whatever tool you pick, keep a rule register outside the platform. Every enterprise that skips this regrets it at the first staff change.

Logic used to compensate for bad process. When a form needs forty conditions to serve five distinct audiences, the honest answer is often five forms. Complexity in the tool is frequently complexity the organisation has declined to resolve elsewhere.

Untested combinations. Rules interact. A field hidden by one condition and required by another produces a form that cannot be submitted, and it will be discovered by a customer rather than by you. Build a test matrix covering the realistic paths, not just the happy one.

The evaluation shortcut

Take your single most complex existing form, or the process you have been avoiding building, and try to construct it during a trial.

Not a representative form. The hard one. Every platform on this list handles a straightforward branching questionnaire, and choosing on that basis tells you nothing. The form you have been putting off is the one that reveals whether the logic model actually fits your requirement, and it will reveal it in an afternoon rather than in month three of a rollout.

Samsung had already given its flagship Galaxy S26 series the spotlight earlier this year, so another Galaxy event arriving just weeks after its July Unpacked naturally raised a question about what was left to show.

The answer came on August 27, when Samsung introduced the Galaxy S26 FE, a cheaper entry point into its flagship family. 

It starts at $699.99 in the US and goes on sale from September 4, while selected carriers get it from September 3. Samsung positioned the S26 FE around three areas, which are bringing flagship-style camera and AI features to a wider audience, improving everyday usability, and offering longer software support.

Samsung Galaxy S26 FE is The Main Announcement

The Galaxy S26 FE was the headline reveal. The Fan Edition model keeps much of the Galaxy S experience while cutting back on some of the hardware found in the more expensive S26 models.

Jay Kim, Samsung's Executive Vice President and Head of Customer Experience Office for the Mobile eXperience business, said the phone was “purposefully designed to deliver the signature strengths of the Galaxy S series”.

The S26 FE has a 6.7-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X display with a 120Hz refresh rate and up to 1,900 nits of brightness. It runs on Samsung's Exynos 2500 chip and comes with 8GB of RAM, with 128GB and 256GB storage options.

The phone also gets a 4,900mAh battery and 45W wired charging. Samsung says it can reach a 69 per cent charge in about 30 minutes when used with its 45W adapter.

The Camera Upgrades Are About Software

Samsung has given the S26 FE a triple-camera system comprising a 50MP main camera with optical image stabilisation, a 12MP ultra-wide camera and an 8MP telephoto camera with 3x optical zoom. The front camera is 12MP.

Interestingly, My FanCam uses AI to automatically keep a chosen person in frame, letting users turn a wider recording into a subject-focused video. Audio Eraser can reduce unwanted background sounds, while Horizontal Lock helps keep video level when the phone moves during recording.

One UI 9 brings more Galaxy AI to the FE

The S26 FE is the first device in the Galaxy S26 family to launch with One UI 9, Samsung's latest Android interface. The software brings several AI-focused changes that were previously associated with Samsung's more expensive devices.

Moniepoint is done trying to be a remittance company in the UK. After putting in more than two and a half million dollars and building a product that was growing, the Nigerian fintech giant has decided to shut down MonieWorld and send its money, staff, and attention back to Africa.  

It's one of the more surprising fintech exits of the year, and it raises a simple question: if the business was growing, why leave? 

What MonieWorld was built to do, and what it cost 

MonieWorld launched in April 2025 as Moniepoint's first big step outside Africa. The idea was simple and honestly quite smart on paper. Nigerians and other Africans living in the UK send billions of pounds home every year to support family, pay school fees, or fund small businesses. MonieWorld wanted a piece of that.  

It let UK residents send money straight to Nigerian bank accounts using a MonieWorld account, a British bank card, Apple Pay, or Google Pay. This was Moniepoint's way of following its own customers abroad, since a lot of the people using Moniepoint in Nigeria have relatives sending them money from London, Manchester, or Birmingham. 

This wasn't a cheap experiment either. According to Moniepoint's own statement, the company incorporated Moniepoint GB in February 2024 and committed £1.2 million just on setup costs, covering admin, tech infrastructure, and compliance staffing needed to operate legally in the UK's tightly regulated financial market.  

Then in July 2025, it went further and secured a $2.5 million equity deposit to acquire Bancom Europe Ltd, a company that already held an Electronic Money Institution licence from the Financial Conduct Authority.  

That licence mattered a lot, because without it, Moniepoint would not have been allowed to move customer money in the UK at all. All in, we are talking about well over $2.5 million in direct investment, not counting staff salaries, marketing, and the day to day cost of running the product for more than a year. 

The business was growing, but the market was brutal 

Here's the part that makes this exit feel surprising to a lot of people. Moniepoint has said MonieWorld wasn't failing in the way people usually assume when a product gets shut down.  

The company reported a 70% increase in monthly transaction volume among its UK diaspora users, which is a strong number for a product barely a year old. So, this wasn't a case of nobody using the app. It was more a case of Moniepoint asking itself whether the growth was fast enough, and whether the resources tied up in the UK could do better somewhere else. 

That question gets a lot easier to answer once you look at who else MonieWorld was up against. The UK-Nigeria corridor is one of the busiest remittance routes into Africa, and that is exactly why it attracts so many players.  

MonieWorld launched into a space already dominated by NALA, LemFi, Flutterwave's Send App, Wise, and WorldRemit, alongside older traditional operators. These aren't small companies either. LemFi alone has raised close to $86 million in funding as of early 2026 and recently committed £100 million to expand globally, with London named as its new global hub.  

After nearly two years in early access, Path of Exile 2 finally has a firm launch date. During Gamescom Opening Night Live on August 25, developer Grinding Gear Games confirmed that the action RPG will leave early access and hit version 1.0 on December 11, 2026, arriving alongside a new trailer, a brand-new class, and a shift to a fully free-to-play model.

For a game that has quietly built one of the genre's most dedicated communities, this is a significant moment, and the timing puts it right in the thick of a crowded holiday release window.

What Was Announced

I've been wanting to take my content creation a little more seriously for a while now, especially since I'm getting more comfortable in front of the camera.

But there was one piece of advice I kept hearing from almost every content creator and self-appointed content guru: if you're going to upgrade anything, upgrade your audio.

And it makes sense. You can get away with imperfect lighting or an expensive camera you don't own. Bad audio, though, can make even a great video difficult to watch.

So I decided it was finally time to get myself a wireless microphone. Naturally, I did what anyone with an internet connection would do. I started Googling.

I went through reviews, YouTube videos, online stores, and comparison videos, looking for the best microphone I could get without spending too much. One option kept appearing, especially once I started looking at affordable wireless microphones: the K9.

At about ₦8,000 (~$6), it didn't feel like a particularly risky experiment. If it could make my audio noticeably better than my phone's built-in microphone, I would consider the money well spent.

So I bought it.

When the K9 arrived, there wasn't much ceremony involved. I unpacked it, connected the receiver to my phone, clipped the microphone onto my shirt, and started recording.

And honestly, I had high hopes for my ₦8,000 microphone.

To be fair, it immediately changed the way my recordings sounded. Its biggest strength was also one of the first things I noticed: it did a surprisingly decent job of cutting out surrounding noise.

People talking in the background, a fan running, or just general ambient noise–the K9 made an effort to push those sounds behind the person speaking.

For someone recording a quick video for TikTok or Instagram, that's useful.

There's also something to be said for how easy it is to use. You don't need an app or 20 minutes of setup. You connect the receiver, clip on the microphone, and start recording. For ₦8,000, that's not bad.

Then I listened back properly.

And that's when I realised the K9 had solved one problem without quite solving the one I actually cared about.

In fact, there were moments when I preferred the sound of my phone's built-in microphone. The K9's audio has this compressed, slightly hollow quality to it. The surrounding noise gets reduced, but the speaker's voice loses some of its natural quality in the process.

And that created a strange situation. I had bought a microphone specifically to improve my audio, and while it was doing a decent job of separating my voice from the world around me, the actual voice quality wasn't particularly impressive.

That's not to say the K9 is completely useless. If your phone's microphone is poor, you're recording somewhere noisy, or you just want to experiment with wireless audio without spending much money, it can still do the job.

But using it made me curious about what quality I would get if I spent more. So, I started digging again.

From ₦8,000 to ₦150,000

This time, I wasn't looking for the cheapest wireless microphone I could find. I wanted something I could use if I actually decided to take content creation seriously.

That's when I started seeing the DJI Mic Mini.

But the price difference was impossible to ignore. The K9 cost me about ₦8,000, while the DJI Mic Mini cost about ₦150,000 (~$112). That's almost 19 times more.

At that point, the question wasn't whether the DJI had better specifications. It should. The question was whether a microphone could actually sound and feel almost 19 times better.

You've probably seen a headline like this recently: an AI model escaped its environment during a test.

It sounds like something from a science-fiction film. But in July, OpenAI disclosed an incident that made the idea considerably harder to dismiss.

During an internal cybersecurity evaluation, OpenAI's models found a way out of their sandbox, gained internet access, and compromised parts of Hugging Face's infrastructure while trying to complete their assigned task. OpenAI described it as an "unprecedented cyber incident." Hugging Face later reconstructed roughly 17,600 actions the agent took over several days.

The incident was contained. There's no evidence that an AI model became an independent digital organism and began spreading across the internet. But that distinction may be less reassuring than it sounds.

Because the real danger, according to the cybersecurity experts Techloy spoke with, isn't necessarily an AI mysteriously escaping. It's an AI getting access to something it was never supposed to reach.

An AI agent doesn't need to become conscious, independent, or impossible to control to cause serious problems. It needs a goal. Then it needs tools, credentials, or systems that give it more room to pursue that goal than its operators intended.

And once that happens, the question stops being whether the AI has "escaped."

The more important question is: what can it reach now?

"Escape" may be the wrong word

Before imagining an AI disappearing into the internet, it's worth defining what actually happened.

Michael Allen Agee, a cybersecurity expert with 25 years of experience, argues that "escaping" isn't exactly the best description. He calls it "agentic scope creep via specification gaming."

"This is when the Agent is attempting to achieve its specified goal in a way that violates the boundaries of the instructions," he says.

For firewall-gated testing environments, he adds, this is very possible. But what an agent can actually do depends heavily on its user's authorisation on the local system, the tools available to it, and whether it can access actual resources, including the ability to download additional software, packages, and libraries.

Andy Nolan, a senior director of technology at TrustedTech, sees it similarly.

"I wouldn't frame it as an AI simply 'escaping' a sandbox on its own," he says. "In most realistic scenarios, the bigger risk is an environment failure around the AI, i.e., overly broad permissions, exposed credentials, misconfigured network access, vulnerable software, basically, anything that gives the agent more access than intended or needed."
