The job of a sports app used to be relatively simple— to show the score, send the alert,  publish the line-up, and add highlights after the match.

xAI launched Grok Build on May 14, its first-ever AI coding agent, and CEO Elon Musk personally posted the call for feedback on X as the tool is in early beta. xAI describes it as “an agentic CLI for coding, building apps, and automating workflows” and available exclusively to SuperGrok Heavy subscribers at $299 per month, though xAI is currently offering an introductory deal at $99 per month for the first six months.

This comes after Musk replied to a question on X about the product's release window in April by saying: "It will take until May to be close to Opus 4.6 and June to match and maybe exceed. Short time by normal standards, but long time in the AI arena." Bloomberg confirmed the launch marks xAI's first serious push into professional coding, a market where Anthropic's Claude Code has driven the company to $30 billion in annual recurring revenue as of April 2026, up from $14 billion just two months prior.

Looking at the competition, Claude Code and OpenAI's Codex both have head starts in the AI coding agent race. Codex has surpassed three million weekly active users. Claude Code is Anthropic's primary growth engine. Grok Build enters with none of that history, but with a set of bets, it is now asking developers to test. Here's what it does.

/1. Grok Build Runs Up to 8 AI Agents at the Same Time

Most AI coding agents work sequentially, one AI working through tasks step by step. Grok Build spawns up to eight concurrent specialized sub-agents that simultaneously plan, search documentation, and write code in parallel.

For large, multi-file projects, a complex task gets divided and attacked from multiple directions at once instead of one at a time. Each sub-agent can run inside its own separate branch of the codebase, so parallel lines of work don't overwrite each other. This is the core architectural bet xAI is making.

/2. Arena Mode: AI Agents Compete and Rank Their Own Output Before You See It

Arena Mode is Grok Build's most discussed feature. Rather than presenting a single solution for the developer to accept or reject, Arena Mode runs multiple agents against the same problem, has them compete, and then ranks their outputs before the result reaches the developer.

All agent responses appear side by side with a usage tracker, scored, and ordered. Arena Mode was confirmed in code traces in February 2026; it is not yet live in today's early beta, but xAI has confirmed it as a coming feature.

/3. Plan Mode Lets You Approve Every Step Before Any Code Changes

Grok Build includes a plan mode that addresses one of the most common frustrations with AI coding agents: the tool starts executing, goes in the wrong direction, and by the time you notice it has already rewritten a dozen files. In plan mode, Grok Build presents the full execution plan first.

You can approve the plan, comment on individual steps, or rewrite parts entirely before a single line of code is touched. Once a plan is approved, every change surfaces as a clean diff, a clear before-and-after view of what was changed. This gives developers more visibility and control upfront.

/4. Your Code Never Leaves Your Machine

Grok Build is built local-first: all code runs on your machine, and nothing in your codebase is transmitted to xAI's servers during a session. The tool is also air-gap compatible, meaning it works in sensitive offline environments once the initial setup is complete.

For developers working on proprietary codebases, contractors operating under NDAs, or teams in regulated industries like finance and healthcare, where sending source code externally is a compliance risk, this is a meaningful difference from tools that route operations through company servers.

/5. It Works With the Tools Developers Already Use, Including MCP Servers

Grok Build picks up existing developer conventions when launched inside a project folder. AGENTS.md files (instruction files that tell AI agents how to navigate a codebase), plugins, hooks, skills, and MCP servers (the connectors that let AI tools talk to external services) all work out of the box without additional setup.

It also integrates with VS Code for developers who prefer a graphical interface alongside the command line. A headless mode allows Grok Build to run inside scripts and automated workflows without any interactive interface. The command-line tool also includes full ACP support, meaning developers can build their own bots and agent orchestration systems on top of it.

/6. The Underlying Coding Model Costs $0.20 per Million Input Tokens

The model powering Grok Build, grok-code-fast-1, was built from scratch by xAI with a training dataset focused on programming content and real-world pull requests. It scored 70.8% on SWE-Bench Verified, the industry's standard coding benchmark, using xAI's internal testing setup, and carries a 256,000-token context window, meaning it can hold a large codebase in memory across an entire session.

It is priced at $0.20 per million input tokens and $1.50 per million output tokens via API, competitive against what developers pay for Claude Code or Codex at comparable task volume. For teams running high-frequency automated coding loops at scale, that per-token gap compounds quickly. xAI itself notes that SWE-Bench benchmarks "don't fully reflect the nuances of real-world software engineering," and independent replication of the 70.8% score has not yet been published.

Meta’s smart glasses are starting to look less like a novelty and more like a platform. The company has now opened up its Meta Ray-Ban Display glasses to third-party developers, a move that quietly shifts the product from a closed set of built-in features to something more expandable.

“Developers have been experimenting and building hands-free experiences on our AI glasses using camera, audio, and voice. Now, we’re excited to offer a way to present information visually, directly in the moment," the company said in a blog post.

Until now, the glasses could show messages, AI responses, and a handful of built-in tools. While useful, those features were still limited. The real question has always been what happens when outside developers get involved.

How Developers Can Build for the Glasses

Now that door is open. Developers can build apps for the in-lens display in two main ways. One route is through Meta’s Wearables Device Access Toolkit, a native SDK for iOS and Android that lets existing apps extend into the glasses. That means developers can reuse familiar building blocks like text, images, buttons, video, and lists to push parts of their apps directly onto the display.

The second option is more open-ended: web apps. Built with standard HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, these can run like lightweight tools accessed through a URL instead of an app store download. It’s the kind of setup that makes it easier to experiment, whether it’s transit tools, cooking instructions, or quick utility apps.

On paper, this turns the glasses into something closer to a wearable interface layer rather than a standalone gadget.

For users, the shift is simple but significant. Instead of waiting for Meta to decide what features matter, developers can now push in real-time updates, live data, and small tools directly into your line of sight. Think sports scores while walking, grocery lists without pulling out your phone, or navigation prompts that sit quietly in your view as you move through a city.

Interaction is also changing. With Meta’s Neural Band, users can control these apps using subtle hand gestures, including experimental features like handwriting-style input for messaging across WhatsApp, Messenger, and Instagram.

Meta is also layering in new capabilities of its own. Live captions are rolling out for messaging apps, display recording lets users capture what they see alongside audio and on-screen content, and navigation support now stretches across the US and major European cities like London, Paris, and Rome.

None of this feels fully finished yet. There are no third-party apps available at launch, only the tools to build them. But that’s often where platform shifts begin, not with the apps people use today, but with the ecosystem forming around what could be built next.

Meta is betting that once developers start experimenting, the glasses will stop being just a display and start behaving more like a daily interface for small, constant tasks.

It’s been the standard for years that every new Google account comes with 15GB of free storage. Gmail, Drive, Photos—all of it shared. That was the deal. Well, not anymore, or at least, not exactly.

Google is now reportedly limiting that full 15GB to accounts verified with a phone number. No phone number? You may only get 5GB. Google’s prompt reportedly says:

“Unlock 15 GB storage at no cost by using your phone number.”

A Reddit user spotted this during account setup. Google also reportedly quietly changed its support page language from “comes with 15GB” to “up to 15GB.” According to 9to5Google, that wording changed in March 2026.

Google appears to be framing this move as a way to make sure free storage is only given “once per person.” In theory, linking a phone number makes it harder for automated accounts and bots to abuse the system. And honestly, from Google’s perspective, that logic makes sense.

But here’s where things get sticky: Google wants your phone number, which also means more user data. Some Reddit users called this a new way to collect information under the guise of security. Others pointed out it may simply be about reducing spam and fake accounts. Both can be true at the same time.

What makes the situation slightly confusing is that Google hasn’t officially announced a broad policy change. Some users still receive the full 15GB automatically, while others are reportedly being pushed toward phone verification. Existing accounts without linked phone numbers also still appear to keep their 15GB for now. That has led some people to believe Google may simply be testing the feature in certain regions or with specific account setups.

Compared to companies like Apple, which still gives users 5GB of free iCloud storage, Google’s offering remains relatively generous.

If you already have a Google account without a phone number attached, it may be worth checking your storage. Some users still report having the full 15GB. But for new users, there’s now a chance you’re either giving up your number or giving up 10GB of space. In the end, it’s still your choice to make.

AI chipmaker Cerebras Systems surged 68% in its Nasdaq debut on Thursday, May 14, closing at $311.07 after pricing shares at $185 per share. The company raised $5.55 billion by selling 30 million shares, valuing Cerebras at about $95 billion at market close.

The stock opened at $350 and peaked at $386 before settling back during Thursday's trading session. This marks the largest initial public offering for a U.S. tech company since Uber went public in 2019. The rollercoaster didn't stop there, though. As CNBC reported, Cerebras shares saw volatility in early Friday, May 15, trading as the market digested the massive debut.

We now have two new tech billionaires from the blockbuster debut. CEO Andrew Feldman is holding a stake worth $3.2 billion, while co-founder and technology chief Sean Lie owns shares valued at $1.7 billion. The pair founded Cerebras roughly a decade ago.

Early investors were also rewarded from the IPO in proportion to their conviction. Benchmark, which co-led Cerebras' Series A funding round in 2016, is sitting on shares worth $5.5 billion at Thursday's close. Foundation Capital owns a stake valued at $4.8 billion. Demand for the IPO was exceptionally strong, with investor appetite exceeding available shares by more than 20 times.

Cerebras originally filed to go public in September 2024, but withdrew its submission after the prospectus was heavily scrutinized. The main concern was the company's heavy reliance on a single customer in the United Arab Emirates, Microsoft-backed G42, which accounted for 85% of revenue in 2024.

The company chose to raise private capital instead. In February 2026, Cerebras was valued at $23.1 billion by investors. Just three months later, the public market valued it at $95 billion.

When Cerebras refiled to go public in April 2026, the story had changed on paper. The company said 24% of revenue last year came from G42, down sharply from 85% the prior year. However, the Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence in the UAE still accounted for 62% of revenue in 2025.

What changed the narrative was OpenAI. Cerebras announced a cloud deal with OpenAI in January worth more than $20 billion that expires in 2028. Revenue jumped 76% to $510 million in 2025, proving the company had successfully diversified beyond its initial customer concentration issues.

SpaceX, OpenAI, and Anthropic IPOs Expected to Follow Cerebras in 2026

Cerebras is the largest IPO of 2026 so far and the biggest AI-focused IPO to hit Wall Street. But it could be just the opening act for an even bigger wave of tech offerings this year.

Elon Musk's SpaceX, which merged with AI company xAI in February, is gearing up for a share sale. Model developers OpenAI and Anthropic could also hit the market later this year. All three companies are valued at or near trillion-dollar valuations in private markets.

Cerebras makes chips specifically designed for running AI models. The company claims its Wafer Scale Engine 3 chips are 58 times larger than a leading graphics processing unit and deliver results up to 15 times faster. The VanEck Semiconductor ETF has also jumped 58% so far in 2026, reflecting surging investor interest in AI chip companies.

Africa’s eCommerce giant Jumia is planning to cut about 10% of its 2,000-person workforce as it expands its use of AI tools while working toward profitability before the end of the year, according to a Bloomberg report. 

The planned reduction, which could affect around 200 employees, is part of the company’s effort to automate more internal operations while lowering costs after years of heavy losses. Speaking to Bloomberg TV, Jumia CEO Francis Dufay said the company has already started adding AI-powered workflows across several parts of the business. 

“We are able to automate across our business and increase revenue, lower operational and fixed-cost base,” Dufay said. “The coming two quarters, we are going to save on about 10% of headcount, mainly driven by AI, and it’s definitely going to increase.” 

The move marks a major operational change for a company that historically relied on large teams to handle logistics, customer support, catalog management, and other manual processes across multiple African markets. According to Dufay, some of the work that previously required manual input is now being completed within weeks using AI-powered tools. 

“It works just as well and is actually more scalable,” he said, describing the company’s growing reliance on AI tools as both a way to reduce costs and improve how the business operates as competition in African eCommerce continues to grow. 

The restructuring comes at a time when Jumia’s financial performance is beginning to improve after years of accumulated losses that reached about $2.2 billion as of December 2025. In its latest quarter, revenue rose 39% year-on-year to $50.6 million, beating analyst expectations of $47.36 million, while gross merchandise value (GMV) climbed 31% to $211.2 million. Nigeria, the company’s biggest market, recorded a 42% increase in physical goods. 

With revenue growing and costs gradually falling, the company appears to be betting that AI tools can help close the gap between expansion and finally becoming profitable. The latest cuts also continue a broader restructuring effort that has already reduced Jumia’s workforce by more than half from 4,318 employees at the end of 2022. 

Across Africa’s tech ecosystem, more companies are increasingly turning to AI tools and leaner operations to preserve cash and improve margins. Payments company Flutterwave reportedly cut roughly half of its teams in Kenya and South Africa in mid-2025, while Sabi reduced about 20% of its workforce before shifting focus toward commodities trading. 

According to Dufay, stronger revenue growth combined with lower operating costs could finally push Jumia toward sustainable profitability after years of cash burn. “This business has changed,” he said earlier this year. “It’s clear in the numbers that profitability is within reach.” 

Still, while the restructuring may strengthen Jumia’s financial position, it also reflects the growing concerns surrounding AI adoption in the workplace. For many employees, the company’s latest move raises fresh questions about how automation could reshape jobs across Africa’s tech sector, especially as roughly 200 roles now face replacement in what becomes Jumia’s second major workforce reduction in recent years.

Enter’s platform helps companies automate lawsuit analysis, defense preparation, and settlement management. The company already processes hundreds of thousands of legal cases annually. Founded in 2023, Enter plans to expand its technology and strengthen its presence among large enterprise legal teams. 

/2. Franq, $12.4M, Fintech, Brazil 

Franq is a fintech platform that helps financial professionals operate independently by connecting them with banking and financial products. The company raised a $12.4 million Series B round led by Valor Capital, Quona Capital, and Globo Ventures. 

Franq connects more than 150 financial products from over 50 financial institutions, including Itaú, Santander, Bradesco, Inter, and C6 Bank. The startup will use the funds to expand its insurance and investment offerings while increasing the use of AI across its operations. Franq also plans to open training hubs for financial professionals.

Beepay is a retailtech and fintech startup focused on autonomous checkout systems. The startup raised a $400,000 seed round led by Comunitá, with participation from ACATE Invest and Ventiur. 

Beepay allows customers to buy products without traditional cashiers by using mobile phones or self-service kiosks. Its technology is already used in stores, condominium markets, hotels, and corporate spaces. 

The company plans to invest in AI and develop new payment and identification tools that reduce checkout lines and operating costs. Founded by Renata Costa, Beepay currently serves around 170 clients and expects to reach break-even within 18 months.

Frame Security came out of stealth this week with a platform that fights AI-powered scams and deepfake attacks on company employees, running realistic simulations tailored to how each specific organisation actually operates rather than the generic phishing tests most staff see through in seconds. The company was founded by Tal Shlomo, one of Wiz's earliest employees, and Sharon Shmueli, who became CTO of Team8's venture platform at just 25, and already has paying customers, including Louis Dreyfus Company, AlphaSense, and Rockefeller Capital Management.

Index Ventures, Team8, and Picture Capital led the round, with Wiz CEO Assaf Rappaport and investor Elad Gil also joining. The money goes toward expanding the engineering team, deepening AI and cybersecurity research, and scaling into the US and global enterprise markets.

/2. Stitch, $25 million, Fintech Infrastructure, Saudi Arabia

Stitch builds the core operating system for banks and financial institutions, replacing old, fragmented systems with one modern, connected platform covering lending, cards, payments, deposits, and reconciliation. Starting in Riyadh in 2022, Mohamed Oueida's company has seen a huge surge in the last six months alone. They are scaling up their customer base fast and currently manage transactions for companies like Foodics, LuLu Exchange, and Raya Financing.

Andreessen Horowitz led this Series A, marking the firm's first-ever investment in the GCC, bringing total funding to $35 million. Existing investors Arbor Ventures, COTU Ventures, Raed Ventures, and SVC also joined. The capital goes toward product development, deepening the GCC presence, and expanding global go-to-market operations.

/3. Aumet, $12 million, Healthtech, Saudi Arabia

Aumet connects pharmacies, hospitals, and suppliers across the Middle East into one procurement network so buying decisions happen faster and stock shortages happen less often. The Riyadh company, founded in 2016 by Yahya Aqel and Adel Haddad, now links over 12,000 pharmacies with more than 1,000 suppliers across Jordan, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia, with its system deployed across 32 hospitals and over 500 medical centres, processing over $1 billion in gross merchandise value.

This Series A was led by Emkan Capital, with Qatar Development Bank, SABAH VC, and AAIC joining alongside existing investors Shorooq Partners and Right Side Capital Management. The money goes toward building out AI capabilities, scaling enterprise deployments, and expanding into new GCC markets.

/4. Stream, $5.2 million, Fintech, Saudi Arabia

Riyadh-based fintech Stream just landed $5.2 million to clean up how MENA businesses get paid. Ibrahim Aldlaigan started the company in 2024 to roll billing, subscriptions, and payment collection into a single platform. The setup is clearly working, as they are already processing millions every month for clients like Atyab and Riyadh Schools Group.

BECO Capital led this seed extension, which comes less than six months after the initial seed round and pushes total seed funding to $9.2 million. STV, Flourish Ventures, Arab Bank, Outliers, and BYLD also joined. The capital goes toward expanding the platform and reaching more businesses across the region.

/5. Lyrie.ai, $2 million, Cybersecurity, UAE

Lyrie.ai came out of stealth this week with a platform that gives AI agents verifiable identities and enforces what they can and cannot do inside company systems, closing a security gap that has opened up as organisations deploy AI agents with little oversight. Guy Sheetrit founded the Dubai company and is also releasing the Agent Trust Protocol alongside this raise, an open standard that the company is pushing for industry-wide adoption.

The $2 million pre-seed goes toward growing the security research team and advancing the Agent Trust Protocol through the Internet Engineering Task Force. Investors were not disclosed. The company said it is already preparing for a Series A to scale into enterprise and government markets.

/6. Hakeem Health, $1.65 million, Healthtech, Saudi Arabia

Hakeem Health built HakeemDx, a platform that plugs into hospital systems and gives doctors real-time bilingual medical guidance in Arabic and English at the point of care, pulling from each patient's actual records and lab results. Founded in 2022 by Bilal Adi and Mohammed Ayyad in Riyadh, the company targets hospitals, universities, and healthcare payers across the GCC on a subscription model.

Merak Capital led the round, with Sanabil 500 also participating. The money goes toward expanding HakeemDx adoption across hospitals and health systems in the GCC.

/7. Gabster, $500,000, AI SaaS, Saudi Arabia

Gabster pulls customer messages from WhatsApp, Instagram, email, Telegram, live chat, and over ten other channels into one workspace, with AI agents handling replies, appointment booking, workflow automation, and reporting. Ibrahim Ali founded the Riyadh company in 2024, and this pre-seed from RAI (Rajhi Investment) and T2 is its first institutional backing since launch.

The money goes toward product development and expanding AI adoption for businesses in Saudi Arabia.

Other funding announced this week includes TruKKer, a UAE-based digital freight network founded by Gaurav Biswas, which secured a trade receivables securitisation facility of up to $300 million from Abu Dhabi Commercial Bank, and Qatari accounting software startup HASIF received an investment from Snoonu at an undisclosed amount. The TruKKer arrangement is structured as debt rather than equity, and the HASIF amount was not disclosed.

Conclusion

With $96.35 million in disclosed equity funding this week, Israel brought in the single largest check, while Saudi Arabia contributed four deals across fintech and healthtech. Cybersecurity showed up twice in the rankings from two different countries, and the week closed out with deals spread across Israel, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE.

It took Victory Adugbo, a growth marketing specialist, a week to complete the first hiring assessment he was given for a marketing role.
