Awwwww....with a heavy heart I comment on this! Wow....you are such an encouragement to so many. Satan loves to take those making a difference for the cause of Christ and make them ineffective. You are very influential to many women. In the ten years that I have known you, I have learned so much. I love how you teach me to be quick to forgive. In the ten years of knowing you...if there was something in the past that I have made right you have never brought it up again.....and you forgave me immediately. I love how you are real. As I struggle in areas....you do not try to help me with a spirit that I have never done that and I have arrived....I am all knowing. You are so humble...and many times say I can relate to how you feel after doing or saying something. I love that you are not afraid to talk about difficult topics that others do not touch. You have so much wisdom on so many topics. I love how you can share something with me and I think completely different about it then when I first messaged you. I love the example that you set for others in everything you do....and admit at times that you have failed in an area and strive to do better. I can not imagine my life if you had never decided to invest in it. I pray that the Lord this was the Lord's will and not Satan's attempt to keep you from reaching so many for Christ! I love you!

Hahaha...oh my! I love when the Lord teaches you to control your spirit after you type out a response and get ready to post it and you accidentally delete it! :) :) :) I am not sure what happened. Thank you for posting this blog! I remember a time when I looked at older women of faith and admired them...and thought how awesome it would be to be like them. What an awesome goal to achieve God's desire for you in each of your roles as a wife, mom, and servant. I look at the Proverbs lady and think wow....how does she do all of that! I struggle balancing being a mom and being a servant to others. The Lord is helping me balance this in a more practical manner. I hope to continue to strive to be the kind of Lady God desires of me! Thanks for the blog encouraging us to not just be ladies of the world, but to be ladies that are pleasing to God. :)

Yes, James, some have given their lives or their attractiveness for others. I was actually aiming more at cleanliness, as much as one IS able, versus slovenliness, which some seem to see as acceptable. Thank you for the great reminder that things are not always as they appear.
Blessings!
Lisa

Man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart. It's possible that in the quest for sacrificing one's life for others, one may have to sacrifice one's attractiveness. God will then look on the heart of such a person and be pleased. Meanwhile, another person may see this person with disdain. God has chosen the foolish things of this world.

Have you heard someone say something like, “we should wear our very best to church to honor God?” I tried that once. I had a simple though formal gown that I wanted to wear for a special holiday. The longer I wore it, the more uncomfortable I became. With each comment it was increasingly obvious […]

Interesting, but your last sentence does not summarise the only options. Mary may already pregnant by an unknown man. It is possible that Joseph was a widower with children and was looking for a new wife, became engaged to Mary only to find she was already pregnant. In those days an unmarried woman might well be stoned to death, so Joseph went ahead with the marriage for some reason. Joseph disappears soon in the biblical story suggesting he was much older than Mary. It also explains the existence of siblings for Jesus, albeit not directly related to Jesus. Whether Joseph consummated the marriage is then irrelevant, knowing that she had already slept with a man may have put him off in those days of sexual purity. Anyway, this is just one other plausible explanation.

I've only been around for a little over half of them, but I'm so proud of your first 50. :) So many accomplishments (aka "investments") that are known only to you, God, and (sometimes!) the person on the receiving end. I feel overwhelmed sometimes when I think of all the ways you've sacrificed for me, and then realize that I only even recognize a fraction of them. I've been inspired by your example in many areas, but especially prayer and faith. Thank you for praying for me constantly, even now that I've left home.

Happy birthday, Mother. I love you.

Very neat find! I had generally thought of "God is my Judge" as being a negative (unless you were perfect), but thinking of it in this context is beautiful! Reminds me of the judge in Luke 18 who avenged the widow, and the corresponding "...shall not God avenge his own elect, which cry day and night unto him, though he bear long with them?"

Re: Mark 16:9-20

Hi Steve C.,

Greetings in Christ! I noticed the material at http://thecorbettfamily.org/st...
and since this is a subject on which I have done extensive research I thought I’d chime in with a few thoughts and observations.

The note in the Bible Knowledge Commentary (by Walvoord and Zuck) tends to view the evidence at a distance, and is wrong when it says that Vaticanus and Sinaiticus both leave space for verses 9-20; this is true of Vaticanus but not Sinaiticus. (There is blank space below Mk. 16:8 in Sinaiticus but it was the copyists’ standard practice to leave space below the end of a book, and start the next book at the top of the next column.)

I don’t know who’s writing “The Complete Biblical Library” but the writer does not seem to know what “hapax legomena” means when he refers to “a process called hapax legomena.” The term simply means a word used only once.

Norman Geisler’s statements in “The Big Book of Bible Difficulties” (which has also been published as “When Critics Ask”) have some problems, indicating that the authors have conducted very shallow research about this. Specifically:

(1) Geisler’s claim that “These verses are lacking in many of the oldest and most reliable Greek manuscripts” is simply false. A total of five manuscripts of Mark 16, Greek and non-Greek, from before the time of Charlemagne, do not contain text from 16:9-20. Five is not many.

(2) Geisler’s reference to “important Old Latin” and “Syriac” manuscripts refers to only two manuscripts: the Sinaitic Syriac manuscript, and the Old Latin Codex Bobbiensis (which is
probably the worst-copied manuscript of Mark in existence).

(3) Geisler’s claim that “Ethiopic manuscripts” lack Mark 16:9-20 is false. Metzger, who is partly responsible for spreading this false claim, retracted it in an extensive article in 1980, in New Testament Tools & Studies. Unfortunately, Geisler seems not to have noticed.

(4) Geisler’s claim that “Many of the ancient church fathers reveal no knowledge of these verses” is extremely misleading, because the same thing can be said about practically every 12-verse section of the Gospel of Mark, and because there are over two dozen patristic writings which use the contents of Mark 16:9-20.

(5) Geisler’s claim that Clement reveals no knowledge of these verses is extremely misleading, partly because he seems to allude to Mark 16:19 in a comment on Jude 24, preserved by Cassiodorus, but mainly because Clement does not quote from 12 entire chapters of the Gospel of Mark, so his non-use of 12 verses says nothing about whether
or not they were in his copies of Mark.

Most people do not realize that Clement of Alexandria hardly ever quoted from Mark except for chapter 10, and so this statement by Geisler (which he got from an early edition of Metzger’s book “The Text of the New Testament”) gives a false impression.

(6) Geisler’s claim that Origen reveals no knowledge of these verses is misleading, because Origen does not use most 12-verse sections of Mark. If Origen’s non-use of a 12-verse passage is interpreted to mean that it was not in his copies of Mark, then Origen’s copies of Mark were pretty thin. There are large segments of text of Mark that Origen never used in his extant writings.

(7) Geisler’s claim that Eusebius reveals no knowledge of Mark 16:9-20 is false.
Eusebius specifically and repeatedly refers to the contents of Mark 16:9 in his composition Ad Marinum. What has happened is that Metzger mistakenly made this claim in an early edition of Text of the New Testament, and Geisler has repeated it without testing it.

(8) Geisler’s claim that “Jerome admitted that almost all Greek copies do not have it” is very misleading, because in the composition in which this statement occurs (Epistle 120, Ad Hedibiam), Jerome is not writing independently; he is passing along a spontaneously translated summary of what Eusebius wrote in Ad Marinum. In other words, this is Eusebius’ comment, not an independent statement from Jerome.

(9) Geisler’s claim that “Many manuscripts that do have this section place a mark by it indicating it is a spurious addition to the text” is false. Once again he has repeated Metzger’s claims, without testing them, and exaggerated the claim in the process.

Also, several statements found in William Barclay’s commentary on Mark need to be corrected. The shallowness of his research is displayed by his statement that verses 9-20 “are not in any of the great early manuscripts.” One need only consider Codices A, C, and D to see that Barclay’s claim is ridiculous and that any opinion based on such minimal research is worthless.

Regarding the comments by John Phillips: some of these statements need to be corrected
and clarified too. Most of the Syriac versions support the inclusion of Mark 16:9-20 but there is one Syriac manuscript (the Sinaitic Syriac) in which Mark’s text stops at 16:8. Most of the Egyptian versions include Mark 16:9-20 but there is one Sahidic manuscript, and one Sahidic amulet, in which the text ends at 16:8. Also, the statement, “The Armenian, Ethiopian, and Georgian versions contain them” must be changed; the
Armenian version and the Old Georgian version are divided on the question; keeping in mind that the Old Georgian was translated from Armenian, it looks like there were two Armenian transmission-streams that flow all the way back to the 400’s – one that contained Mark 16:9-20, and one that did not. Also, the statement that “Papias, Justin
Martyr, Irenaeus, Hoppolytus, Eusebias, Chrysostom, Augustine, Nestorius, and Cyril of Alexandria” refer to Mark 16:9-20 should be adjusted: Papias’s statement is only a possible allusion, and the names of Hippolytus and Eusebius should be spelled correctly.

There’s more information about this in my book, “Authentic: The Case for Mark 16:9-20,” which is sold at Amazon as an inexpensive Kindle e-book, or if you send me a request by e-mail I can send you a slightly longer edition of the book, for free, formatted as a Word
document.

Yours in Christ,

James Snapp, Jr.
Minister, Curtisville Christian Church
Indiana

Some scholars teach a “general judgment” based on Matt. 25. Is this what the Bible teaches? As we look at a brief chronology of end time events, the “judgment of nations” found in Matt. 25 will come into focus. While many speculate about the antichrist, it is important to remember that we are not looking […]

When did the Church start? In Matt. 16:18, Jesus said to Peter “upon this rock I will build my church.” Some count this as the beginning of the church. Others claim it was on the Day of Pentecost. Still others think it began in the Old Testament, claiming Acts 7:38 as a proof text. […]

First, consider 2 Peter 3:8 “But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.” Richard Niessen declares 2 Peter 3:8 “was never intended to be a mathematical formula.” Henry Morris argues this verse “has been badly misapplied when used to teach the day-age theory. In the context, it teaches exactly the opposite, and one should remember that ‘a text without a context is a pretext.’” John Phillips commenting on this verse, says, “God, by contrast, gathers all of time, past and future, into an eternal present tense.” I like this!

according to this view 2 Peter 3:8 should read, “But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a billion years, and a billion years as one day.” Hahaha!

“Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.” It is obvious that a careful reading and study of the Scriptures themselves would lead to the understanding of a literal, 24-hour day. Awesome point!

Romans 14:12 states, “So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God.”

"One might speculate on Lot’s destiny – were it not for 2 Peter 2:7. Here we read that God “… delivered just Lot.” According to Vine’s Expository Dictionary of Old Testament and New Testament Words, the word “just” means “righteous.” 2 Peter 2:7-8 adds, after asserting that Lot was righteous, that he was “ … vexed with the filthy conversation of the wicked: (For that righteous man dwelling among them, in seeing and hearing, vexed his righteous soul from day to day with their unlawful deeds).” Lot lost his wife, his family, the wealth and worldliness he so desired – but he did not lose his soul."

Powerful information.

"Paul and Silas sang in jail, at midnight (Acts 16:25), not because they were ecstatic about their circumstances, but as a result of a deep spring of contentment bubbling up from a full soul.... through Christ the believer can be known for his moderation (v. 5). Moderation is defined by the Complete Biblical Library as yielding or gentle. In the New Testament, this greek word is found four other times. Once it is translated patient (1 Timothy 3:3), and three times is translated gentle (Titus 3:2, James 3:17, and 1 Peter 2:18).... through Christ the believer realizes his utter dependence on the Lord.... how great to be able to be content wherever we are, and with whatever we have."

These things especially spoke to me. Thank you.

So true! I love the part about perspective- I really believe that if we were able to see from God's perspective, we would have no trouble being grateful for even the hardest things that we have to deal with. I wonder sometimes what it must feel like for God to hear us complain and question when He knows that He is doing what is best, and because of our narrow perspective, we just don't understand. Maybe it'd be more accurate to say that we just don't trust Him fully.

Thank you for the encouraging post!

We stay pretty busy with work at or for the church and fill in the cracks with family time or work around the house! We do almost everything together as a team which makes it a lot more enjoyable! I’m praying for you. May God accomplish His purpose in us and through us during this time. Even so, come (quickly), Lord Jesus! Hang in there!

I understand that some of the kids did go back when we went to TN for Steven's and Anna's wedding. I'd like to hear from them so we can all know the verdict. Does the tree have the unusual feature mentioned?

That is the funniest story I was trying to read it out loud and could barely read for laughing. Awhile back our pastor was preaching a funeral and some how he slipped and fell in the grave. He was so embarressed It didn't take him long to get out
