The Boeing Company [NYSE: BA] recorded third quarter revenue of $17.8 billion, GAAP loss per share of ($9.97) and core loss per share (non-GAAP)* of ($10.44) (Table 1) primarily reflecting impacts of the IAM work stoppage and previously announced charges on commercial and defense programs. Boeing reported operating cash flow of ($1.3) billion and free cash flow of ($2.0) billion (non-GAAP)*.

Commercial Airplanes third quarter revenue of $7.4 billion and operating margin of (54.0) percent reflect previously announced pre-tax charges of $3.0 billion on the 777X and 767 programs as well as the IAM work stoppage and higher period expense, including research and development (Table 4).

The 787 program is currently producing at 4 per month and maintains plans to return to 5 per month by year end. In the quarter, Commercial Airplanes booked 49 net orders and delivered 116 airplanes, with backlog of over 5,400 airplanes valued at $428 billion.

Core Operating Earnings/(loss), Core Operating Margin and Core Earnings/(loss) Per Share

Core operating earnings/(loss) is defined as GAAP Earnings/(loss) from operations excluding the FAS/CAS service cost adjustment. The FAS/CAS service cost adjustment represents the difference between the Financial Accounting Standards (FAS) pension and postretirement service costs calculated under GAAP and costs allocated to the business segments. Core operating margin is defined as Core operating earnings/(loss) expressed as a percentage of revenue.

Core earnings/(loss) per share is defined as GAAP Diluted earnings/(loss) per share excluding the net earnings/(loss) per share impact of the FAS/CAS service cost adjustment and Non-operating pension and postretirement expenses. Non-operating pension and postretirement expenses represent the components of net periodic benefit costs other than service cost.

Pension costs allocated to BDS and BGS businesses supporting government customers are computed in accordance with U.S. Government Cost Accounting Standards (CAS), which employ different actuarial assumptions and accounting conventions than GAAP. CAS costs are allocable to government contracts. Other postretirement benefit costs are allocated to all business segments based on CAS, which is generally based on benefits paid. Management uses core operating earnings/(loss), core operating margin and core earnings/(loss) per share for purposes of evaluating and forecasting underlying business performance.

Management believes these core measures provide investors additional insights into operational performance as they exclude non-service pension and post-retirement costs, which primarily represent costs driven by market factors and costs not allocable to government contracts. A reconciliation of these non-GAAP measures to the most directly comparable GAAP measure is provided on page 12 and 13.

Free Cash Flow

Free cash flow is GAAP operating cash flow reduced by capital expenditures for property, plant and equipment. Management believes free cash flow provides investors with an important perspective on the cash available for shareholders, debt repayment, and acquisitions after making the capital investments required to support ongoing business operations and long term value creation. Free cash flow does not represent the residual cash flow available for discretionary expenditures as it excludes certain mandatory expenditures such as repayment of maturing debt. I’ve spent my entire career in the aerospace and defense business and one constant has always been the critical role that Boeing plays, not just to the A&D industry, but to our national security, and the overall global economy.

We have employees who are thirsty to get back to the iconic company they know, setting the standards for the products that we deliver.

So, my mission here is pretty straightforward. Turn this big ship in the right direction and restore Boeing to the leadership position that we all know and want.

Now to do this is going to require changes in four particular areas and let me introduce them, and I’ll come back and discuss each one.

First, we need a fundamental culture change in the company.

Second, we must stabilize the business.

Third, we need to improve our execution discipline on new platform commitments across the company.

And fourth, while doing the first three, we must build a new future for Boeing.

So, let me start with arguably the most important, changing the culture at Boeing

I spent the last two decades working with Boeing in the supply chain. So, I have had an outside-in view of Boeing, which is very helpful. That experience combined now with seeing things from inside the company has helped provide an informed view of some of the actions we need to take.

Much has been written about how we got to where we are, but most also recognize that Boeing was once a benchmark for what good culture looks like. And I believe we can return to that legacy.

I know culture change starts at the top. Our leaders, from me on down, need to be closely integrated with our business and the people who are doing the design and production of our products.

We need to be on the factory floors, in the back shops and in our engineering labs.

We need to know what’s going on, not only with our products, but with our people.

And most importantly, we need to prevent the festering of issues and work better together to identify, fix, and understand root cause.

I’ve already introduced a much more detailed business cadence to drive this across the organization and this process of change is underway.

Culture is driven by values, and we’ll redefine those for the company together.

This has to be more than the poster on the wall. These values will be used to hold leaders accountable in how they lead our teams in delivering safe, high-quality products and services to our customers.

I recently had a meeting with our top executives in the company and we talked specifically about this culture change. I see this more as a continuous process improvement rather than a milestone. We will be relentless in changing the Boeing culture through action, not just words on a page.

Now let me shift to the second item, which is stabilizing the business.

This has been central to my focus since starting the job in August. We have some really big rocks that we need to get behind us to move the company forward.

The first and foremost on everybody’s mind today, is ending the IAM strike. We have been feverishly working to find a solution that works for the company and meets our employees' needs.

I met with the union leadership the first week on the job and let them know that I was committed to resetting the relationship.

And I remain committed to getting the team back and improving our relationship, so we don’t become so disconnected in the future.

I’m very hopeful that the package we put forward will allow our employees to come back to work so we can immediately focus on restoring the company.

Once we get back, we have the task of restarting the factories and the supply chain.

And it’s much harder to turn this on than it is to turn it off. So it’s critical, absolutely critical, that we do this right. Our Safety and Quality Management Systems will guide us through the restart, and we have a detailed return-to-work plan in place and I’m really looking forward to getting everybody back and getting to work on that plan.

One additional area of focus that is critical to our stability is the implementation of the safety and quality plan.

As you know, this is a plan that we have reviewed with the FAA and will be part of the criteria we will use to measure stability of our production system which is necessary to gain authority to increase 737 rates.

I’m encouraged with the progress we are making already, and we need to continue that momentum.

Another big rock to stabilize the company is managing our balance sheet to best support retaining our investment grade credit rating.

We have a plan, and we are executing that plan and I’m confident that we have a good path forward to manage the realities of our business and retain our investment grade rating.

So, I’ve talked about Culture and Stability, the third area is improving the execution discipline on our new platforms, whether this be the commercial derivatives of the 737 MAX and 777 or the series of programs in our BDS business.

We have to be better at understanding and managing the risks on these projects more proactively.

This includes disciplined program and risk management in all phases of the project, including the bid phase.

Again, this is an area where we need the management team much more focused on their programs and much more active working with their customers on ensuring success and anticipating risks before they happen.

Supply chain management improvements will be critical to this effort.

Clearly, we have some difficult contracts in our defense business, but we have to do a better job of executing on the things that we can control.

So, lastly, the fourth area to discuss is building a new future for Boeing.

While we are somewhat consumed with the challenges of today, we need to be setting the foundation of the future for Boeing.

Boeing is an airplane company and at the right time in the future we need to develop a new airplane. But we have a lot of work to do before then.

This includes stabilizing our business, improving execution on the development programs, streamlining the portfolio to do what we do well and restoring the balance sheet so that we do have a path to the next commercial aircraft.

We need to reset priorities and create a leaner, more focused organization

We’ve recently announced a workforce reduction which will focus on consolidation of areas where we’re not efficient and we need to continue to focus on reducing non-essential activity.

So, before I hand it over to Brian, let me summarize by saying that we have a lot of work to do, we have a plan and change is already underway.

This is a big ship that will take some time to turn, but when it does, it has the capacity to be great again.

This is a company that ushered in the new era of air travel and helped land the first man on the moon.

Getting back to the values that helped define this legacy is what will define our future. I’m excited about the opportunity, and I look forward to working with all of you.

The aircraft, a Boeing 737, does not have a fuel dumping system, so the crew needed to reduce the plane's weight by burning fuel in-flight. This precaution was necessary to ensure a safe landing without risking damage to the aircraft's structure. After over two hours of flying, the plane landed safely.

The FMGS (Flight Management and Guidance System) contains a database that aids in predicting aircraft performance and calculating necessary data. However, variations in aircraft configurations can lead to discrepancies between the database information and the aircraft's actual performance. To address this, the FMGS applies corrections to its computations.

The FMGS contains a performance database to compute the predictions and the performance data. This performance database has a model of several aircraft configurations (aircraft type/engine model) to tune the performance and the FMGS predictions.

For some aircraft configurations, the model can differ from the real aircraft performance. In these cases, the FMGS has to correct the computation of the performance and the predictions. This is the aim of PERF and IDLE factors. With time, the real aircraft drag and engine performance can deviate from the nominal model.

It is Prime Responsibility of The airline Flight Operations should periodically revise the value of these factors to adapt FMGS predictions to actual aircraft performance. Kindly Note: The IDLE factor is not available on aircraft with #FMS1 Honeywell Legacy.

Over time, factors such as aircraft drag and engine performance may deviate from the database's baseline figures. This necessitates periodic adjustments to ensure accurate performance predictions.

What is PERF Factor:

What is IDLE Factor:

The IDLE factor is used to fine-tune the aircraft's vertical profile during descent, specifically from the Top of Descent (TOD) to the first altitude constraint. It modifies the idle thrust by adding a delta thrust, allowing the aircraft to maintain the computed vertical profile despite unexpected wind conditions.

1.A positive IDLE factor results in a less steep descent profile, causing the descent to begin earlier.

2.A negative IDLE factor makes the descent profile steeper, leading to a later start of the descent.

These adjustments ensure the aircraft follows an optimal descent path.

PERF Factors

Takeoff and Landing Performance Calculations:

Responsibilities

Provide technical support to achieve engineering and quality excellence.

Review engine workscope for FMP overhaul engines and provide applicable work instructions to the shop to ensure compliance with engineering data during the engine shop visit

Support engine failure investigation and coordinate with engine OEM, airline customers and aviation authorities for engine condition documentation and reporting.

Perform review of Modification Service Bulletin (SB) and provide timely information to the shop when applicable.

Requirements

Degree in Aerospace or Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.

Job Purpose

To execute, internal and external audits, audit reviews, accident and incident investigations, and surveillance as directed by the line manager. Key Result Responsibilities

Maintains the Quality Assurance System adopted for internal procedures, processes and products audits, surveillance and spot checks for Flight Operations in accordance with respective Civil Aviation & IOSA standards and requirements. (for e.g. UAE GCAA/CAA/CARs/AMCs).

Assists the Line Manager in formulating, enhancing and monitoring the adherence to Quality Assurance policies, procedures, processes, and manuals to stay abreast with the changing needs and requirements of the Company.

Supports in developing Quality Assurance awareness across the different functions through Bulletins, inter-service memos, PPT, presentations, workshops, etc.

Partners with Stakeholders and Line Manager to gather necessary historical data, documentation, and feedback to ensure that all established operations and procedures adopted in the assigned department are satisfactory.

Reviews regulatory requirements periodically and ensures comprehensive audit and conformance reports are produced and communicated to regulatory bodies in due time; highlights areas of concern where urgent attention and improvement are needed.

Participates in updating and communicating the respective Civil Aviation regulations in the corresponding manuals in coordination with corresponding personnel in Flight Operations division.

Develops, implements and maintains audit schedules, audit standards, and reporting processes in consistence with the quality policy ensuring compliance with relevant regulatory and company requirements.

Contributes to the preparation and executing of internal annual audit plan; this includes regular audit checks, new checks, as well as urgent audit reviews; carries out assigned audit plan in accordance with approved checklists.

Cooperates with the Flight Operations management to communicate and execute the audit schedules timely; maintains effective and on-going communication on updates to ensure successful results.

Notifies the concerned parties being reviewed prior to agreed schedules to allow needed arrangements; conducts researches for relevant reference documents and airline specific regulations for compliance.

Conducts necessary quality audits and periodic reviews, defines and reports findings, achieves agreement on corrective actions to be taken, and completes the Q-Pulse updates as required.

Identifies root causes and assists in formulating and monitoring the adherence to comprehensive corrective actions for regulatory audits; records the findings and corrective actions in system for verification, follow up, and database purposes.

Follows-up on findings or CAPAs in Q-Pulse and with respective departments and parties to ensure closure of findings.

Reviews corrective action responses to inspections and internal audit findings for Flight Operations with the Manager – Quality Assurance periodically.

Performs trend analysis of all relevant flight operations audits.

Maintains and regularly updates necessary records related to Quality Assurance Audits such as personnel authorization files, dispensation files, deviations, and concessions. Conducts follow up and review deviations concessions and dispensations as required.

Supports the Flight Operations Department with new licenses aiming for continuation of training and enhancing capabilities ensuring the licenses are processed and issued as per regulations.

Assists in the development and delivery of training presentations on the Quality Management system across all Flight Operations areas.

Conducts follow up on Air Arabia approvals and certifications.

Qualifications (Academic, training, languages)

Bachelor degree in Aircraft Engineering or a Pilot’s License or equivalent; alternately a diploma or certificate in a related field combined with needed experieance and exposure required to fulfil the position requirements.

Certificates in Auditing/Quality Assurance/or Compliance such as IOSA or ISO–Lead Assessor are desirable.

Project Management certificate or alternately the proven corresponding working experience is nice to have.

Professional membership of associations related to the Aviation/Airlines industry or is an advantage.

Proficient in Microsoft Office, Internet and Web Search, Q-Plus is preferred.

Excellent command over written and verbal communication skills: reporting, presentations, etc.

Work Experience

3-5 years of related working experience in the aviation/airlines industry in the Flight Operations department in Quality Assurance/Audit or related position.
