ONLY ONE FISHING BOAT IN BAYFIELD'S HARBOR THIS MORING....SOON THERE WILL BE NONE AS WINTER APPROACHES

I eventually got myself off to a bit of a jackrabbit start this morning after Woodsy sent me this Facebook message at 9:05. 'Happy Haircut'. 'HAIRCUT'!?!? Yikes, I had totally forgotten I had made a haircut appointment yesterday for this morning at 10 a.m. I was still in my jammies, and Bayfield was two miles away. With one eye on the clock and the other eye on my rubber ducky, I was soon under a deluge of water in the shower with ducky hurriedly quacking out the minutes. It sometimes takes a while for me to put myself together, but this morning I quickly assembled a reasonable facsimile of myself as best I could. Of course, the Gremlins, sensing my haste, immediately began throwing up roadblocks in my path. Where's my pants? Who hid my socks? My razor needs the blade changed. My glasses need cleaning, and my hair won't lie down. Where did I put my shoes? Who hid the belt for my pants? Somebody must have stolen my car keys and taken my shoes with them. What!! Did I give away all my winter jackets? Who said there wasn't enough gas in the car to get out of the driveway!! It just never stops with them Gremlins. They just love tangling me all up when I'm in a hurry!!!! However, despite their best devious methods, I did make my haircut appointment just on time. So there!!:))

LOOKS LIKE MOST OF SUMMER'S BOATS ARE NOW OUT OF THE WATER

The stiffness in my body, and especially my legs, this past while had been slowly increasing, and I have no one to blame but myself. Nearly thirty years ago I was prescribed a drug for the stiffness and mild soreness in my legs caused by arthritis. It was called Arthrotec, and it turned out to be a miracle drug for me and immediately alleviated those two annoying arthritic maladies. Over the years, I occasionally stopped taking my Arthrotec with the idea of getting off it. But the soreness and stiffness always returned, so I don't know what made me think stopping my Arthrotec again about three weeks ago was going to be any different this time. Finally dawning on me Thursday night, after days of growing soreness and stiffness, I remembered stopping my Arthrotec. Silly boy, I thought to myself today after finally resuming my Arthrotec and almost immediately feeling noticeably better. I should get a tattoo on the back of my hand simply saying, 'DON'T DO THAT AGAIN'!! That tattoo of course, would have multiple meanings pertaining to other things in my life as well. But then again, I rest assured, knowing I am certainly not the only one standing in this leaky old boat.

THESE BOATS WILL SOON BE OUT OF THE WATER AND INTO WINTER STORAGE

Feeling like a cold and damp Novemberesque day outside, I stayed inside all day. It's that time of year now when words like 'cozy' and 'warm' have priority.

GROANER'S CORNER:(( Two young men were out in the woods on a camping trip, when they came upon this great trout brook. They stayed there all day, enjoying the fishing, which was super. At the end of the day, knowing that they would be graduating from college soon, they vowed that they would meet, in twenty years, at the same place and renew the experience. Twenty years later, they met and traveled to a spot near where they had been years before. They walked into the woods and before long came upon a brook. One of the men said to the other, "This is the place!". The other replied, "No, it's not!". The first man said, "Yes, I do recognize the clover growing on the bank on the other side. To which the other man replied, "Silly, you can't tell a brook by it's clover."

POSITIVE AND WELCOME CHANGES FOR THE MOST PART

noreply@blogger.com (Al Bossence) — Fri, 16 Oct 2026 00:18:50 +0000

With a cold east wind blowing, I cut my walk short this morning. There ain't no Alaskan Mountain Man in this guy. With today's cold east wind and 51°F mid-October morning feeling cold to me, this same windy, cold morning in the middle of January would feel like a pleasantly mild and rather wonderful day. Funny how that works, eh.............. Our catch-and-release mouse score now stands at 6 to 1, with 5 little mouses caught and released, and one mouse that jumped out of the pail before I could get the lid on. And, he landed right on my foot too! When I chauffeur these little fellers to their new digs and release them, I always wish the little guys well and leave them a few shelled peanuts. The catch-and-release traps Woodsie found online are called, Lulu Catch. And, here's a tip.....if you use one of these, don't leave the mouse in it for a prolonged period of time because they will eventually saw a hole in the plastic and be on their way. And don't ask me how I know that.

Woodsy and Monica went shopping in Goderich today, and it was a good thing we had two Subarus between us because Monica's wouldn't start. My Subaru was still warmed up from my drive earlier, so off they went. I have a battery charger here, so I hooked that up and charged Monica's Subaru battery, and then took her car for a drive down to the end of Bayfield River Road and back to make sure the battery had a good charge on it. All is now good once again. And Monica even came home with a new pair of winter boots today as well:))

Rather than head outside to rip and tear around the yard again today, I decided my body needed a rest, so I dispensed with any outside activities and just kinda vegged out inside where it was cozy, relaxing, and toasty warm. Needed that. With nights steadily becoming colder now, it's not likely that I will be out for many more night drives to my night sky viewing spot. I am so much going to miss those special nights with coffee in hand, cruising along slowly with my favorite music on and windows down. And Subie's Moon roof open under an overhead canopy of diamond-like stars with frogs and crickets serenading me along the way. These magical nights are winding down now because I just don't like being outside at night in the freezing cold. But, with the way things have been shifting and changing in my mind these past few years, just about anything is possible, and I'll have to keep an inquisitive eye on those mindful modifications. Positive and welcome changes for the most part...... It was late afternoon when Woodsy headed back to her place in Stratford for a few days, and I will miss her.

IT MAKES A FELLER THINK A LITTLE MORE SERIOUSLY ABOUT THE FUTURE

noreply@blogger.com (Al Bossence) — Wed, 14 Oct 2026 22:35:37 +0000

TURNING EAST OUT OF OUR PARK THIS MORNING

Our wondrous, warm, summer-like mid-October temperatures came to an end overnight, and we are back to more seasonal temps for this time of year. Now begins the long, slow grind. In our RV days, this coming Saturday was often the weekend of our departure for the great American Southwest. But not to worry, I'll not go on about it.......... With the talk of colder temps and possible snow flurries Friday night, I decided to put a push on a few outside things today. Not wanting to be outside in the colder weather, I finished cutting down all the remaining Hosta beds, and that took a while as I crawled and crabbed my way through the hostas with my clippers. I wheelbarrowed all the clippings to the utility trailer. Took the frog pond water pump out and cleaned it. I have two outside water hook-ups, one out front and one out back. I disconnected the backyard hose, drained it, and rolled it up for winter storage. Again today, as I contorted myself like a pretzel crawling around in the flower beds, I was very aware of the aging process and my growing unsteadiness on my feet. It makes a feller think a lot more seriously about the future and what's to come. Sorry folks, just one of those 'aches & pains' days. Better times ahead...............

I HAD A LOT OF HOSTAS TO CUT BACK TODAY

The husband said he would like to camp outside in the woods. To calm her concerns, he suggested they talk to the park ranger to see what the likelihood of a bear encounter would be. The ranger told them, "Well, we havewn't seen any grizzlies in this area so far this year, or black bears, for that matter." The wife exclaimed "There are two types of bears out here? How can you tell the difference? Which one is more dangerous?" The ranger replied, "Well, that's easy -- if the bear chases you up a tree and it comes up after you, it's a black bear. If it shakes the tree until you fall out, it's a grizzly.".......... The motel room turned out to be quite nice.

BE ACUTELY AWARE OF YOUR SURROUDINGS WHEN NOT PAYING CLOSE ATTENTION TO YOUR SMARTPHONE

noreply@blogger.com (Al Bossence) — Tue, 13 Oct 2026 23:36:56 +0000

Monday:: With a warm front moving through the area, it created a bit of fog in the air, but not a thick pea souper. Sunday's rain left my gravel walking road a touch muddy, but nothing to be concerned about as I hoofed my quarter mile north up the road and then back to the car again. With a light mist still hanging silently in the air I decided to head home and not take a short drive around the countryside.

With the biggest part of Autumn's pine needle drop over, I decided to do another raking and then hook up the utility trailer and haul my half trailer load of needles to the Park's recycling area. That done and back home, I headed inside to a wonderful Thanksgiving dinner where Woodsy had been busy in the kitchen cooking up a complete Thanksgiving dinner with all the fixins. The kitchen was smelling wonderful. We had decided to eat early and then get ourselves outside under the early afternoon's clearing skies. It had turned into such a beautiful October Thanksgiving day with temperatures pushing past 70F.

It was late afternoon when we headed off to Goderich to pick up a few things at Walmart and then head on down to the harbor and beach areas. Arriving back in Bayfield Monday evening, there was hardly any traffic or people anywhere as we first headed down to Bayfield's beach and then back up into Bayfield for a drive along Main Street. Of course we stopped at Rosie's Ice Cream Shoppe, and did you know they have sugar-free ice cream? Yup they do, so we picked up a couple kiddie cones before heading home on a beautiful warm October night. I was reminded yet again how fortunate we are to live here where we do in this peaceful, slower-paced area on the tranquil shores of the third largest body of fresh water in the world. I am talking about Lake Huron of course. And, speaking of Lake Huron, did you know it has an average depth of 195 feet with a maximum depth of 750 feet, with a surface area of 23,000 square miles. I'm sure everybody needed to know that.........:))

Tuesday:: On my walk this morning, it felt like it could have easily been one of the ten best weather days of the year so far. By 10 a.m., it was 70F with a warm breeze wafting up from the southwest. We eventually reached 77F and weather records were broken for this day. Bush lines are finally beginning to take on some color, and I was once again accompanied on my walk by a few Sulphur butterflies. Wispy clouds in a deep blue early Autumn sky. A lot of inside puttering for Woodsy today and a lot of outside puttering for me. With the weather being so beautiful this afternoon, we saddled up the E-bikes and headed east down Bayfield River around two o'clock. A left turn onto Tipperary Line took us north to Bayfield Road (highway to Clinton), whereupon we reversed our course and bucked a strong headwind when reaching Bayfield River Road heading west. Not one of our longest rides, but we both could feel it in our legs by the time we got home.

LOOKING GOOFIER THAN USUAL, I DECIDED TO INCLUDE THIS SELFIE OF OUR BIKE RIDE ANYWAY

It is that time of year again when field mice begin looking for a warm and cozy place to spend the winter. My house is always on their destination list, and this year again was no exception. Signs of the little critters began surfacing a while back. The sounds of little feet scurrying about in the night across floors or inside walls, droppings here and there, and the disappearance of peanuts (for the chipmunks) after a hole was discovered chewed through a large 2kg bag of peanuts. Yes, the home invasion was on, and the point was quickly reached where we had to do something about it. I do not have an aversion to mice, but Woodsy sure does. About mid-morning on Monday, she was stopped in her tracks when she walked into the living room and heard what sounded like a scratching sound somewhere. I, sitting in my recliner, heard it too. And then, there it was again. We both heard it and looked toward a heating pipe vent in the floor under an east-facing window. And seconds later the metallic scratching sound again, but this time it appeared to be coming from another floor vent under a window on the living room's southern wall. Even I was alarmed now, trying to figure out what was happening. How could this puzzling and rather loud noise be coming from both floor vents back and forth at the same time. I gripped the arms of my chair in preparation for bounding out of it. That is if an 82 year old man can actually bound from a laid-back recliner. It was at this point that Woodsie let out a gasp as her right arm shot up towards her face with something in her hand. It was her iPhone. She had been in the kitchen and tapped on an attachment a friend had just sent her. Walking into the living room with the phone in hand by her side, that attachment opened, and the sounds we thought were mice in the heating pipes were actually emanating from her phone. I can't remember what that Facebook reel was about, but it's audio sure had us fooled and scarily bewildered for about six seconds. What I can't figure out, though, is how that phone's audio definitely had us hearing those scratching sounds in two different locations about ten feet apart. And we both heard those two different sound locations!! Anyway, we now have two humane 'live-catch' traps set, and as we catch the little critters, I will transport them to a new location where there stands an old structure which will make a fine new home for a few pesky mice. And so, that is my mouse story, and my takeaway from this is to say, 'be acutely aware of your surroundings when not paying close attention to your smartphone:))

So the old farmer went about his chores. It wasn't too much later when the farmer heard loud screams and yelling. He looked over and saw the Highway Department employee running for his life and right behind him was the farmer's huge prize bull. The bull was madder than a hornet's nest and was gaining on the Highway employee at every step. The old farmer yelled out, 'Show him your card, show him your card!!

AN AFTERNOON RAIN OUTSIDE KEPT US INSIDE TODAY

With overcast skies this morning, it wasn't long before it began to drizzle, but I was able to get three more wheelbarrow loads of pine needles and leaves raked up and dumped into the utility trailer before heavier rains were upon us. It's easier to rake up pine needles when they are dry and I wanted to get that done before the rains came. However, I ended up a few shades of wet before I finally retreated inside. Woodsy rolled in from Stratford around noon and was soon busy in the kitchen fixing up things for a Thanksgiving dinner tomorrow. And by golly, she whipped up an apple crisp for today. I HAVE A LOT OF HOSTAS HERE THAT NEED TO BE CUT BACK EACH YEAR

It was cool and breezy enough this morning to wear a nylon jacket over my long-sleeved shirt out on the open country road. Following my walk, it was right back home again. Raked up a few more pine needles and started cutting back the hosta beds. That's a little bit of a labor-intensive job because one has to get down in the dirt with either a good pair of sharp scissors or clippers to cut the leaves off a few inches from the ground. It wasn't the best thing to do for my upper back, plus my legs felt like they were going to fall off with all the bending and ups and downs. But hey, it was a beautiful early October Saturday, and I wanted to get some of these outside jobs out of the way before the weather turns.

WE ARE ALL TRAVELING THAT ROAD

noreply@blogger.com (Al Bossence) — Sat, 10 Oct 2026 00:45:51 +0000

THURSDAY EVENING SUNSET FROM MY WALKING ROAD

With mainly clear skies Thursday evening and the days getting shorter, I was out the door at 6:40 p.m. and off to my walking road to catch the 6:53 sunset. Cooler night air is upon us now so I wore a light winter jacket. After my walk, it was into Clinton for coffee to go, and then off I went to my night sky viewing spot. The constellation Sagittarius is still visible low on the southwest horizon, but the constellation Scorpius has slipped over the horizon, and I will keep watch for it when it again becomes visible in the Spring sky and begins once again its slow and steady trek across summer's southern sky. Tonight I saw eight satellites and six aircraft.

With bright sunny skies again today and refreshing temperatures, I hardly had to wear a jacket on this morning's walk. Following that, and after a couple of stops in Bayfield, I had to head off to Goderich. I'm the kind of character who basically always keeps two of everything on hand, and that way I never run out of anything. And it's not often that I mess up and run short. But darn if it didn't happen this morning when I realized I was right out of my Weight Watchers bread. Serious business here because I always have a piece of toast for breakfast. I was in a dilemma, so after my walk, I was off to Goderich for a few groceries.....specifically, A Loaf of Bread!! Yes, our local Bayfield Foodland Supermarket has bread, but I don't think they have 'Weight Watchers' bread.

LAKE HURON WAVES AT GODERICH'S ROTARY COVE EARLIER THIS MORNING

Home again, and with this wonderful weather upon us I hauled out the leaf blower and blew of the front porch and deck as well as blew out the carport. So many pine needles all over the place. Three more heaping wheelbarrow loads of needles were raked up and tossed into the utility trailer. I also took my weed whacker for a walk and trimmed up some flower bed edges. It won't be long before I start cutting all the hostas back.

A FEW PHOTOS FROM AROUND OUR PARK LATE THIS MORNING

THAT'S NEIGHBOR MONICA'S GARAGE AT THE UPPER LE

Filling up at the gas station this morning, I noticed the young fellow at the pump. Looking at him, a question drifted through my mind. Would I like to be that young again? Would I like to be his age? Do I wish I could trade places with him? There was no hesitation in my mind, nothing to ponder on. I knew without thinking about it that 'no' I would not like to trade places or be that age again. I knew things about this lad's future that he didn't. I knew the challenges and impossible responsibilities he would face, the trials and tribulations, both the mental and physical pains he would have to endure. I knew the good, the bad, and the ugly. But, I also knew the joys of life, the happiness, the excitement, and the accomplishments he will see. The love and caring he will experience. The happiness, the sorrow. The wondrous warmth of summer, and the brutal cold of winter. The happy heart and the broken heart. He will experience it all and more. He will struggle, and he will succeed. And he will struggle again. I know the road he is on. I have travelled that road. I am still traveling that road. We are all traveling that road. His road at his age is endless and full of unknowns, and he will have to be up for the challenges around every corner. My road is shorter now, and I am comfortable and content with that because I know another road awaits. It becomes clearer to me now as each day slips away. So, no, I wouldn't change places with that younger fellow for anything. Unlike the young lad with an unknown destiny, I now, with awareness, anticipation, and knowledge, patiently await that final journey home..........

GROANER'S CORNER:(( Returning home from work, the little Moron was shocked to find his house ransacked and burglarized. He telephoned the police at once and reported the crime. The police dispatcher broadcast the call, and a K-9 unit patrolling nearby was the first to respond. As the K-9 officer approached the house with his dog on a leash, the little Moron ran out on the porch, shuddered at the sight of the policeman and his dog, then sat down on the steps. Putting his face in his hands, he moaned: "I come home to find all my possessions stolen. I call the police for help, and what do they do? They send me a BLIND policeman!"

SO BACK TO THE PARK'S RECYCLING AREA I WENT

noreply@blogger.com (Al Bossence) — Thu, 08 Oct 2026 22:37:05 +0000

Wednesday:: Sorry folks, by the time I got to the end of Wednesday, I had run out of steam and didn't get a blog published. I started Wednesday morning off by slipping over to neighbor Monica's with a hedge trimmer, a weed whacker, a pair of work gloves, a wheelbarrow, a clippers, and a pair of pruning shears. A flower bed on the south side of her garage had become quite overgrown during the summer with ornamental grasses and a tough weed tree. It needed to be trimmed right back to ground level, so I got right at it and got that job done.

THE TASK AT HAND

ALL DONE BUT THE CLEAN-UP

Monica herself was still in St. Jacobs about 75 northeast of Bayfield. We had driven her there a couple of days ago, and after attending her sister's funeral in Peterborough, Ontario, on Tuesday, she was back at her son's in St. Jacobs and ready to come on. Under clear blue sunny skies, Woodsy and I set out this morning about 11:20 and reached St. Jacobs at 1 o'clock. We soon had Monica loaded up and off and set off for home. We had a small detour already preplanned along the way to a very popular and well-known Mennonite Eatery in Millbank, Ontario, called Anna Mae's Bakery And Restaurant. We knew there would probably be a line up, but we certainly hadn't expected the mass of people there. It quickly became obvious that the long wait time was not going to work in our favor, so we decided to get takeout dinners and bring the food us. We had Monica home shortly before 3 p.m., and the rest of the day just kinda quietly slipped away.

ALL THESE PEOPLE ARE WAITING FOR A TABLE; THERE ARE MORE WAITING OUTSIDE AND IN THE GIFT SHOP

WAITING FOR OUR TAKE-OUT ORDER (ONLY ABOUT 10 MINUTES)

Thursday:: Lots of sunshine through the pine trees this morning as our wondrous Autumn weather continues. So far so good. Back from my morning walk, I raked up four more wheelbarrow loads of pine needles from the backyard and hitched up the utility trailer. I backed the trailer up Monica's driveway to where I'd cut down the tall foliage the previous morning, and loaded all that into the trailer. I then did a 'Lone Ranger' drive to the Park's recycling area. A 'Lone Ranger' drive?? Ya, you know....'To de dump to de dump to de dump dump dump':)) With the weather so nice, it's a real privilege just to be outside doing something physical. And it's a double privilege for me that I can still do a lot of it, and that I still enjoy doing it for the most part. However, today I created some unnecessary work for myself. While unloading the trailer load of brush, I accidentally flipped my blue-handled shovel out of the trailer and didn't notice my shovel missing until I got home. So back to the Park's recycling area I went and began digging and sorting through all the pine needles, tall bamboo grass, and twisted and entangled small branches from the weed tree. Of course I had to dig through 95% of the pile before finally finding my shovel in the last 5%. It wouldn't have been right if I had found it right away, would it!!

ON OUR WAY TO GODERICH THIS MORNING FOR A FEW GROCERIES, WE STOPPED HERE AT THE MAITLAND MARKET

I didn't see any evidence of a frost overnight, so it may not have happened, and that is quite okay with me. The longer the miseries of winter's approach stay away, the better. In our RVing years, at this point in October we would only be a week and a half away from heading off to beloved Southwest, and I would be sooooooooo looking forward to that every year at this time. We were usually gone for five or six months. We never considered it a vacation; we thought of it as a welcome semi-annual lifestyle change. First, heading off to what we considered our second home in the Great American Southwest in the Fall and then heading back to our Bayfield home in the Spring. But, once again, I have to give my head a shake and accept the fact that was then, and this is now. I think we all suffer a little bit from that 'then and now' thing...........

DESPITE COOLER TEMPS AND GUSTY WINDS, IT WAS A BEAUTIFUL SKY DAY

'Wind' was the operating word today, and if on my morning walk I hadn't held onto my hat, it would have ended up somewhere in the next county, and me most likely with it. Luckily, I had thought to wear a warm wind-breaking nylon jacket........Good neighbor Monica's sister passed away last week, so Woodsy and I drove Monica to her son's place in St. Jacobs north of Kitchener, and from there Monica will travel with family members east of Toronto tomorrow to the funeral. We will pick Monica up and bring her home from her son's place on Wednesday. It was nice to see some different scenery for a welcome change today. It's probably been well over thirty years since I was last in that St. Jacobs area. What a lovely day for a drive, and we three enjoyed every inch of scenery all the way there. Luckily, we even got to see some extra scenery when I took a few wrong turns, taking us a little farther than we really needed to go. Like I said, I hadn't been up in that neck of the woods for decades, and I think they may have switched a few roads around on me. Ya right!! We got Monica to her destination all in one piece, then turned around for home with a stop at Cedar Crest Acres north of Stratford on Highway 19. Lorraine (Woodsie) headed inside while I stayed outside taking a few pics. I think we were home somewhere around five o'clock, and that was it for the day. I was ker-pooped. Woodsie, on the other hand, drove into Bayfield, parked the car, and took herself for a long walk. She loves walking. Me, not quite as much unless it's in a quiet forest somewhere. The weather people are calling for frost tonight, and that will trigger the end process for many plants and trees. For our area, Autumn's beautiful colors are right around the corner now and forests will soon be ablaze with Autumn's finery.

The Little Moron looks a little surprised. He thinks really hard for a minute and finally admits, "I don't know." "Well, why don't you go home and work on that one for a while?" THE GROUD IS NOW COVERED IN GOLDEN PINE NEEDLES

Started the morning off with rain, but it didn't last, and we soon had full sunshine on yet another beautiful early October morning. Our Park's annual pine needle drop has started, so with my leaf rake, pitchfork, and wheelbarrow, I got right at the job of raking pine needles and wheelbarrowing them to the utility trailer. Some might wonder why I wouldn't wait until all the needles and leaves were down, and my answer is that it is too big a job by that time, and the weather could turn cold and wet any day now. Cold and wet is a no-no for me, so I prefer to get as much done as I can in this nicer weather. However, the Gremlins threw me a curveball early this afternoon when, after the second wheelbarrow load, one of those Gremlins stuck that hot poker back into the base of my neck again right next to my spine, and I had to come inside and tilt back in my recliner to relieve that. I am probably going to make an appointment with my nurse practitioner to have an X-ray of that area to see if anything can be done. I would really hate to have to load up on pain pills if the problem continues.

After my Friday night phone call to Aunt Jean, who by the way is doing fine, I headed out the door under a canopy of stars and wasn't long in arriving at my night sky viewing place. The cool night air was so clear that I was able to easily see the Milky Way despite my compromised eyes. (cataracts) A lot of constellations were clearly visible, and I saw eleven high-flying aircraft, one meteor, one iridium flash, and two satellites. It's always amazing to think that in each of those aircraft, there are two or three hundred people inside a round metal tube between six and seven miles high in the dark night sky, traveling five and six hundred miles an hour. And many of them are probably sound asleep, and the ones who aren't can't see the ground or where the heck they're going anyway. I think I kind of like it down here with my feet planted firmly on solid ground. Oh wait a minute, it was so dark out Friday night with no Moon....that I couldn't see the ground either.

I am so proud to see the fine young man he has become, and I am so pleased that my love of music passed on from me to him, and in much bigger ways than I could have ever imagined or hoped for. Sean Croley...Music Engineer. The weather was nice enough for us to sit on our front porch, and after a couple of hours we headed to the Woodland Drive-in where Sean bought me lunch. Of course, I had my usual foot-long hot dog with the works. Sitting at a picnic table in the warm Sun, I was glad that we were able to talk about a few things that we had not talked about previously, and I felt much closer to Sean at that time. After I forgot to stop at Tim Hortons for a couple of coffees to go, we were home again, and our conversation on the porch continued till after 3 p.m. when it was time for Sean to begin his long two and a half hour drive back to Beamsville. All in all, it was time well spent today, and I was finally able to make a few important decisions based on our conversation. I hope to be seeing more of Sean in the future. And his lovely wife Kim as well.

TRY TO SEE THE HUMOROUS SIDE OF YOUR FOIBLES

IT'S NOT OFTEN I SEE FREE-RANGE CHICKENS ANYMORE, BUT BY GOLLY, HERE ARE TWO AT A NEIGHBORING FARM

Rain came in the night and stayed for most of the day. I had a light hanging project going on outside, and between drizzles, I decided to move one of the front yard night lights from one side of a Basswood tree to the other side. Hauled out my long ladder and got right at it. Weaving the extension power cord through and around the branches, I soon had the light hanging in the right place and working fine. And then I made a mistake. I decided, while having the ladder out, I'd take the time to cut some dead branches out of the tree. Can you see where I going with this??:(( With my cutters, I soon had dead branches coming down with a sharp snip here, a solid cut there, then all of a sudden I had a 'Pop n Sparks' there!! What!!!! Yup, I had cut right through the power cord I had just strung through the branches for the night light. !!#%&$@!! I spent the next twenty minutes resplicing and retaping that break. Painstakingly stringing the power cord through the branches, I had the light working once more. Then, my short-term memory, of course, let me down again as I proceeded to make my second mistake, and oh yes, you are already shaking your head, knowing full well what my second mistake was. I decided to finish up cutting down the last of the dead branches. It wasn't long before it was 'Snap-Crackle and Pop' all over again as I cut through the power cord for a second time!!!! #@%&$!!!! And both those cuts were only about twelve inches apart. And yes, I actually did this to myself today!! I spent another twenty minutes resplicing and retaping the power cord, and I can tell you that it wasn't only the night light bulb that was blue, but the air all around me had a heavy tinge of blue to it as well !! I know the question for some readers now is, "Why would he write about doing something so carelessly stupid? Well, I know many readers have probably made the same kinds of silly and careless mistakes as well so I'm just saying, no matter what seemingly dumb thing you did, and no matter how upset you were with yourself at the time, give yourself a break and try to see the humorous side of your foibles. I'm sure others do:))

Two weeks later, the man returns, repays the $5,000 and the interest, which comes to $15.41. While you were away, we checked you out and found that you are a multimillionaire. What puzzles us is, why would you bother to borrow $5,000?" IT WAS A CHILLY RIDE

SUNSET AT BAYFIELD'S PIONEER PARK

It was a cool evening when we saddled up our E-bikes and rode out of the driveway with the destination being Bayfield. It's about a fifteen-minute ride, and luckily we don't have to make that journey and back on any busy highways. Our first stop was Bayfield's beach and south pier. A beautiful evening with no wind. Most of the people on the pier were fishing and it didn't look like anybody was having much luck. From the pier and beach area, we swung back up the hill and into the tiny village of Bayfield. By the time we made it to Rosies's Ice Cream Shoppe darkness was soon upon us. Finishing up our cones (Woodsie's treat) on a bench across from Rosie's, we soon mounted up and pointed our bikes' bright headlights for home. It was a chilly ride, but for the most part, we had wisely dressed for it and a good time was had by all.

GROANER'S CORNER:(( There once was a rich man who was near death. He was very grieved because he had worked so hard for his money and he wanted to be able to take it with him to heaven. So he began to pray that he might be able to take some of his wealth with him. An angel hears his plea and appears to him. "Sorry, but you can't take your wealth with you." The man implores the angel to speak to God to see if He might bend the rules. The man continues to pray that his wealth could follow him. The angel reappears and informs the man that God has decided to allow him to take one suitcase with him. Overjoyed, the man gathers his largest suitcase and fills it with pure gold bars and places it beside his bed. Soon afterward, the man dies and shows up at the Gates of Heaven to greet St. Peter. St. Peter, seeing the suitcase, says, "Hold on, you can't bring that in here!" But the man explains to St. Peter that he has permission and asks him to verify his story with the Lord. Sure enough, St. Peter checks and comes back saying, "You're right. You are allowed one carry-on bag, but I'm supposed to check its contents before letting it through." A man got really drunk one night in his local pub. The barman refused to serve him any more alcohol and told him he should be heading home. The man thought this was a good idea so he stood up to leave but fell over straight away. He tried to stand up again but only fell over again. He thought if only he could get outside and get some fresh air he'd be grand. So he crawled outside then tried to stand up and fell over again. In the end after falling over lots more he decided to crawl home. When he got back to his house he pulled himself up using the door handle but as soon as he let go he fell over again. He had to crawl up the stairs and managed to fall over onto the bed and fell asleep. When he finally woke up the next morning his wife asked him what he was doing at the pub last night. He denied it but she said, "I know you were there..." he maintained his innocence until "...the barman rang to say you forgot your wheelchair again....

IN OUR PARK

With a bad leak in my sunroom last Spring, caused by an ice buildup, I knew I had to get that repaired before another winter set in. So, on a good recommendation, I had a fella come this morning and install a heat cable along the edge of the roof where ice always builds up. He also found a spot higher up where the sunroom joins the main roof and repaired a spot where the caulking had given way, creating a hole. Being a steel roof, he also tightened down some loose roofing screws. We'll see what happens this Spring.

HEAT CABLES TO PREVENT ICE BUILD-UPS

I finished planting my Spring bulbs today. All seventy-five of them. I wonder what the odds are of them all showing up in the Spring. I was careful not to plant any of them upside down. Well, at least I don't think I did. Our beautiful late September continues to hold, with the day once again filled with brilliant sunshine and temps in the high sixties. Hauled the E-bikes out, dusted them off, charged the batteries, aired up the tires, and off we went into Bayfield early this evening. (Tonight's photos in tomorrow's post) It had been a few months since we last did that. It was nearly a year ago now that Woodsy surprised me with an E-bike for my birthday.

The first man said, "I wish I was with my family" then poof he was with his family. The second guy said "I wish I was in a bar with my friends" then poof he was gone. The third guy was feeling bad and the genie asked, "What's wrong?" The man said, I'm lonely I wish my friends were here. Poof, his two friends were back in the island.

OUR PARK THIS MORNING

Saturday:: I kept a wary eye on the clock Saturday evening, knowing the Harvest Moon was due to rise at 7:02 and the sun due to set at 7:14 p.m.

BIG SKY AT SUNDOWN

I finished up my country road walk just as the Sun slipped over the horizon and then went off to find the Moon, which should have been in the sky by then. I drove a short distance to higher ground and waited. But no Moon, despite the Sun having already set. I scanned the cloudy horizon, but to no avail. Drove to another hill, and there it was, about ten degrees above the horizon already, barely visible, in a cloud-shrouded eastern sky. To the west, skies over Lake Huron had been clear for the sunset, but no such luck looking East. With the Moon barely discernible, I headed into Clinton and grabbed my coffee to go at Hortons before heading off across the darkening countryside to my night sky viewing spot.

Sunday:: Most years, when Autumn is early upon us, I've thought about planting Spring bulbs, but each year, except for maybe one, I never did. However, this year I was more determined than ever to get some Spring bulbs and get them into the ground. Checked online to see if the Goderich Canadian Tire Store had Spring bulbs. They did, so with that on my list, and after my morning walk, I headed straightaway to Goderich on another beautiful sunny late September morning.

Home again, with a few groceries and bulbs in hand, I set about planting them, but not all of them just yet. Two spots for now, and later in the week I'll figure out a few more spots. I'm already looking forward to seeing them all blooming in the Spring. Tulips, Daffodils, Narcissus, Hyacinths, and Crocus.

I PLANTED SOME OF THE BULBS ALONG THAT STRIP BESIDE THE HOUSE AND AROUND THE CORNER INTO THOSE ROCKS

Woodsy popped in mid-afternoon, so I took a break from bulb planting, and she brewed up some coffee. Later we stopped into the Woodland Drive-In for a bite to eat and then took ourselves for a little drive around Bayfield. What a gorgeous weather day it was. Woodsy stayed till nearly eight o'clock and then headed back to Stratford. The Moon was again shrouded in cloud cover, so I didn't head out anywhere.

AT BAYFIELD'S BEACH

Monday:: All showered up, shaved, and with my hair combed, I headed out the door this morning to my first ever 10:30 exercise class at the Bayfield Community Center. Feeling a little shaky I headed in, but as soon as I went through the lobby door and heard the loud strains of Dolly Parton singing 'Joline' Joline.' I knew there might be something amiss. And there was. Up the stairs I went to where 'Joline' 'Joline' was being belted out louder and louder. Reaching the top, I could see through the glass doors what appeared to be a lot of ladies doing dancersizes, or whatever they call that. And there was a sign on the door saying, 'Do Not Open This Door after 10:15'. Can you just imagine the bee's nest I might have walked into had I not seen that sign. I quietly made a hasty retreat down the stairs and out of the building to my car. Knowing me as well as I do, I knew that I must have read the daily events for the exercise classes wrong. Home again, I saw that I did. But here's the positive side of this: at least I made the effort and went. It looks like the exercise class is Wednesday morning at 10:30, and I do plan to be there. Well, that's my intention anyway. But now there is a dark horse standing in the wings. I have been troubled lately with a lot of pain at the top of my spine on the left side. It feels like somebody is sticking a hot poker into the top of my shoulder. I first noticed that pain about twenty years ago, and more recently it has increased with some chairs I sit in as well as sometimes driving and e-biking. Planting bulbs yesterday brought it on, and the two Tai Chi classes I have attended greatly aggravated it as well. I'll see what happens with the upcoming exercise class. My Tai Chi class did not go well today with the pain in my upper back/lower neck and my unexpected inability to once again focus, remember, and retain what is being taught. I don't understand why my mind is having so much trouble with this, but I it is.

Yet another in a set of fine September days. Sun and clouds, with a healthy touch of coolness, made for a great day puttering about outside in the gardens. Dug up and relocated about a dozen hostas, and cut down the last of the bamboo grass, plus some more ferns. And I'll be darned if that little bit of work didn't kinda poop me out. Oh well, got some laundry done too. Good thing I did the vacuuming a couple of days ago, or it might not have gotten done today. Brewed up an afternoon decaf coffee and flopped into my recliner with sunshine streaming through a couple of south-facing windows. And of course my soothing ambient music is always on. Despite my occasional complaining, sadness, and difficult days from time to time, I so often consider myself to be so fortunate in so many ways. And when it's all over and done some day, I hope I'll be able to look back and say, 'WOW, what a ride':))

The reason I know the leak was caused by an ice buildup is that even with this summer's heavy rains, the sunroom roof never leaked a drop.

I'll ask you a question, and if you get it wrong, you give me $5. Then, you ask me a question, and if I can't answer it, I'll give you $5." The poet thought about this for a moment, but he decided against it, seeing that the scientist was obviously a very bright man. He politely turned down the scientist's offer. The scientist, who was really bored, tried again. "Look, I'll ask you a question, and if you can't answer it, you give me $5. Then you ask me a question, and if I can't answer it, I'll give you $50." The poet agreed. "Okay," the scientist said, "what is the exact distance between the Earth and the Moon?" The poet, obviously not knowing the answer, didn't stop to think about the scientist's question. He took a $5 bill out of his pocket and handed it to the scientist. The scientist happily accepted the bill and promptly said, "Okay, now it's your turn." The poet thought about this for a few minutes, then asked, "All right, what goes up a mountain on three legs, but comes down on four?" The bright glow quickly vanished from the scientist's face. He thought about this for a long time, taking out his notepad and making numerous calculations. He finally gave up on his notepad and took out his laptop, using his Multimedia Encyclopedia. As the plane was landing, the scientist gave up. He reluctantly handed the poet a $50 bill. The poet accepted it graciously, getting ready to stand up. "Wait!" the scientist shouted, "you can't do this to me! What's the answer?" The poet looked at the scientist and calmly put a $5 bill into his hand.

A FEW CANDID PHOTOS AT GODERICH'S ROTARY COVE THIS AFTERNOON

Thursday evening, I did get out for my walk, snapped one sunset photo, and came home again. I had intended to follow my usual evening/night routine drive, but my head just wasn't into it guess. I think maybe it might have something to do with the colder nights now. It's those warm summer nights that I really like being out and about in the warm night air.

WEDNESDAY NIGHTS SUNSET

Another fine late September morn with sunshine and clear blue skies. About as close to a perfect weather day as one could hope for. With our Planet Earth slowly tilting northward, days and nights are steadily becoming cooler now as we tip slightly further from the Sun. Earth will reverse its tilt during the Spring Equinox on Saturday, March 20th, 2027. Always a psychologically good feeling day to look forward to.

Because of even more changes that I have recently made in my eating habits, I was hoping for good results.........And it was good results I got. All numbers were mostly okay, so I am still pre-diabetic. Both my diabetic lady and my Nurse Practitioner were especially pleased with my weight being down six pounds from six months ago. On my scale, I am now tipping it at 163 pounds

The little Moron quickly responded, "How about $50?" The man agreed and told him that the paint and everything he would need were in the garage. The man's wife, hearing the conversation, said to her husband, "Does he realize that our porch goes all the way around the house?" He responded, "That's a bit cynical, isn't it?" The wife replied, "You're right. I guess I'm starting to believe all those 'dumb Little Moron' jokes we've been getting by e-mail lately." A short time later, the little Moron came to the door to collect his money. "You're finished already?" the husband asked. "Yes," the little Moron replied, "and I had paint left over, so I gave it two coats." Impressed, the man reached into his pocket for the $50.00 and handed it to him. "And by the way," the little Moron added, "it's not a Porch, it's a Lexus."

I THOUGHT IT WAS TUESDAY, BUT NOPE, IT'S THURSDAY

noreply@blogger.com (Al Bossence) — Wed, 23 Sep 2026 22:51:52 +0000

With Tuesday's clear blue skies stretching into evening and on into the night, I was out the door, into the car, and out into the countryside. But I just missed the sunset by mere minutes. I've gotta keep a closer watch on the daylight hours as each day becomes shorter and shorter, and I must remember to dress warmer as each night becomes cooler and cooler. It was a nice bright three-quarter Moon tonight, with the full Moon being on Saturday. Saw one high-flying aircraft and two satellites. The only constellations visible in the bright moonlit sky were a few in the Northern Hemisphere, like Ursa Major (the Big Dipper), Ursa Minor with Polaris, the North Star, Cassiopeia, Draco, and Cygnus the Swan (Northern Cross) directly overhead.

TUESDAY NIGHTS THREE QUARTER MOON

My sunny day began in the usual way, and pretty much stayed like that for the rest of the day. A nice early Autumn walk and then home again to putter in the flowerbeds, plus slip into Bayfield for a couple of bags of topsoil at Goldcoast Landscaping. Also cleaned and vacuumed the car's interior, etc. Nothing too exciting. Tomorrow is my diabetes appointment at Goderich's Maitland Valley Medical Center. To the man who answered the phone, he said, “Hello, is Melvin there?” The man answered, “There is no one living here named Melvin. Why don't you learn to look up numbers before you dial?”. “See,” said the father to his daughter. “That man was not a bit happy with our call. He was probably very busy with something, and we annoyed him. Now watch…” The father dialed the number again. “Hello, is Melvin there?” asked the father. “Now look here!” came the heated reply. “You just called this number, and I told you that there is no Melvin here! You've got a lot of guts calling again!” The receiver slammed down hard. The father turned to his daughter and said, “You see, that was anger. Now I'll show you what exasperation means.” He dialed the same number, and when a violent voice roared, “Hello!” The father calmly said, “Hello, this is Melvin. Have there been any calls for me?”

OUR PARK'S POND THIS MORNING

Today marks the September Equinox when the Sun rises almost exactly due East and sets almost exactly due West, and day and night are nearly the same length across the globe. It's a rare balance between light and dark...... And for we here in Southwestern Ontario, today was a bright, sunny one with a nighttime temperature of 46F and a daytime high of 66F. Yes, Autumn is officially upon us for another year. So, bring forth your colors, Autumn, and let us all once again revel in your unrivaled splendor:))

WE'RE BEGINNING TO SEE A FEW TOUCHES OF COLOR IN THE TREES
Needless to say, after getting home from my re-introductory Tai Chi class yesterday, I wasn't long in finding myself several Taoist Tai Chi videos demonstrating all 108 Tai Chi moves and have since been busy in my living room last night and today, practicing the basics of the first four moves in preparation for next Monday's class. I quickly found out yesterday that I am going to need all the help I can get. They generally teach three new moves with each session. I also fully intend to try on a level two exercise program next week, given at the same Bayfield Community Center. If I can get that under my belt, plus the Tai Chi classes, I might be on a more positive path to making it through the Winter. And who knows what other interests or hobbies I might be able to pick up along the way connected with those classes. I'm on a roll.....if I don't fall off. I have thought about the Bayfield Camera Club too, but I think that might be a bit of a stretch for me. With one step at a time, I'll see how it all goes........

TWO OF SIX GRAIN BINS AWAITING A LOAD OF BEANS FROM TODAY'S ONGOING BEAN HARVEST
It was another good day for getting late summer and early Autumn things done. I cut all my ferns, Bamboo Grass, and Japanese Knotweed back in the front yard. No easy feat, I might say. I want to get as much done as I can before we have the big pine needle drop and then all the leaves to rake up. I don't like doing that kind of stuff on cold and dreary days.

What's the good news? Doctor: There's a guy in the next ward who made a very good offer on your slippers.

A father, passing through his son's college town late one night on a business trip, thought he would pay a surprise visit to his boy. Arriving at the fraternity house, he knocked on the door. After several minutes of knocking, a sleepy voice drifted down from a second-floor window. "Whattya want?" the voice asked.
Does Jimmy Duncan live here?" asked the father. "Yeah!" replied the voice. "Dump him on the front porch, and we'll take care of him in the morning."

AND THE WISDOM TO KNOW THE DIFFERENCE

noreply@blogger.com (Al Bossence) — Tue, 22 Sep 2026 00:26:44 +0000

Made it out for a Sunday evening walk but decided to head home instead of doing my usual little night drive. Too many clouds obscured the starry night sky. But the evening sky was very picturesque.

A JET'S CONTRAIL ADDS TO THE CLOUD PATTERNS

DID YOU NOTICE THE HAPPY LITTLE SUN FACE WAVING TO YOU

After thinking about something for a very long time, I reached deep inside myself today and was able to get a good grip on myself and pull myself out of myself long enough to drive myself to the Bayfield Community Center and attend an introductory class on Taoist Tai Chi. Now, this isn't new to me, having completed a beginner's course twenty-five years ago in St. Marys, Ontario. And I remember starting another beginner's class again a dozen years or so ago in Bayfield, but I have no recollection of having completed that one. Maybe it was because we headed off to the Southwest that year earlier than planned. With my normal short-term memory problem being even more compromised at the age of nearly eighty-two, I'm not so sure I'm up for the challenge because re-learning one hundred and eight continuous Taoist Tai Chi moves will especially be an even bigger challenge for me now than it was back then. Years ago, when I attended many AA (Alcoholics Anonymous) meetings, I learned a little prayer that is spoken at all meetings. Before walking into that Bayfield Community Center this afternoon at 1:30, I had to repeat The Serenity Prayer several times. "God grant me the Serenity to accept the things I cannot change. Courage to change the things I can. And the Wisdom to know the difference." And with that under my belt, into the Community Center I went.......

A FEW COTTAGES AND HOMES NEAR BAYFIELD'S PIONEER PARK TODAY

Okay, I wrote the previous paragraph this morning pre-Tai Chi decision, and here's how it went. Yes, I did make it into the building and up the stairs to the second floor of the Bayfield Community Center, with every step of the way wanting to turn around, go home, and crawl back into my secure and safe little cave. However, I persisted and walked through the door into a room of strangers. Always one of my biggest fears these last bunch of years. Two nice ladies came over right away and made me feel welcome, and that, of course, was a big help. There was a core group of about ten Tai Chi folks there, and with this being an introductory class, there were four other newcomers beside myself. With we Newbies taking a seat, several Tai Chi members spoke before putting on a demonstration, often called a set. Sitting there watching the folks go through the Tai Chi moves, my confidence began to stir with thoughts like, 'Yes, I think I can do this again. But that positive thought didn't last long. Soon we Newbies were up on the floor being shown the warm-up exercises and the first three opening Tai Chi moves. And it was here that my confidence left me. I had wrongly assumed that, like riding a bicycle, things would come back to me, despite it being so many years since I had last done Taoist Tai Chi. Not one single thing came back to me, not even the warm-up exercises. Nothing, zero, zilch. I was once again totally a fish out of water. And to think that twenty-five years ago, after successfully completing an introductory course in St. Marys and then attending Tai Chi classes in Stratford Ontario, for a while, I was asked if I would be interested in going further with an eye on being trained as an instructor. I had a lot of things going on in my life at that time, plus the idea of being an instructor scared me. The basic line was simply this....I had grown a little bit of confidence in myself, but not that much confidence to be an instructor. By the time today's demonstration concluded, I was so disappointed in myself that I was eyeing the door. But I decided to stay and watch the core group go through one more set of exercises. But still, I just couldn't see myself being able to do this anymore, so when the class wrapped up, I walked over to the registration table.....and signed up for the full four-month Tai Chi class beginning full tilt next Monday.

GROANER'S CORNER:(( A California Highway Patrolman pulled a car over and told the driver that because he had been wearing his seat belt, he had just won $5,000 in the statewide safety competition. "What are you going to do with the money?" asked the policeman. "Well, I guess I'm going to get a driver's license," he answered. "Oh, don't listen to him," yelled a woman in the passenger seat. "He's always a smart aleck when he's drunk." This woke up the guy in the back seat, who took one look at the cop and moaned, "I knew we wouldn't get far in a stolen car." At that moment, there was a knock from the trunk and a voice said, in Spanish, "Are we over the border yet?"

HMMMM, KINDA WISH I HAD A LITTLE CAMPER VAN

noreply@blogger.com (Al Bossence) — Sun, 20 Sep 2026 22:40:40 +0000

ROUNDED UP THREE MORE FRONT YARD FROGS TODAY AND TRANSPORTED THEM VIA WHEELBARROW TO THE PARK'S LARGE POND

A cloudy morning, but I didn't let that deter me from my morning walk. Home again, and in the carport, I gathered up all my car cleaning supplies, etc., and placed them in a couple of plastic milk crates to be brought into the house for the winter. (waxes, cleaners, sprays, etc.) I do this every year at this time to keep the liquids from freezing, and bring them all back out again in the Spring. I once used a lot of that stuff for waxing fibreglass sided RVs. I know the chances of me ever using any of this stuff again are about nil to none, but I hate to chuck it all in the garbage. I've learned from experience not to be too hasty in matters like this. One just never knows. I'm not dead yet, still have my driver's license, and my driving skills, so maybe, just maybe someday.........Hmmmm, kinda wish I had a little camper van.

A MONTH FROM NOW MOST OF THESE BOATS WILL HAVE BEEN LIFTED OUT OF THE BAYFIELD RIVER AND PLACED IN STORAGE UNTIL SPRING

SAW THIS NEAT OLD CAR IN BAYFIELD THIS AFTERNOON

ALL OF MY VEHICLE CLEANING STILL WILL COME INSIDE FOR ANOTHER WINTER

The lady whose property abuts mine at the back passed away a while back, and that house is now for sale. ($325,000) I noticed on the real estate site that the realtor had taken an overhead drone shot of that house and property. In the photo below, where the 'blue thingy' points to the house and property for sale, there is a dark round area in the trees to the left and just up a bit from the 'blue thingy'. That is my property, and that dark round area is my driveway and the narrow darker area beneath it is where we parked our RVs over the years. And, if you go a bit more left and up, and look carefully, you can actually see the fountain in our Park's pond between the trees. Also, if you look to the top of the photo, you can see the horizon line and the waters of Lake Huron. The little village of Bayfield is located on that horizon line to the left, where you see a slight dip in the shoreline. From my driveway to Rosie's Ice Cream Shoppe on Bayfield's Main Street is three miles.

GROANER'S CORNER:(( A man returns to his parked BMW to find the headlights broken and his front bumper smashed. There's no sign of the offending vehicle, but he's relieved to see that there's a note stuck under the windshield wiper. He picks up the note. "Sorry. I just backed into your BMW. The witnesses who saw the accident are nodding and smiling at me because they think I'm leaving my name, address, and other particulars. But I'm not."

ON BOARD A 295 FOOT, 1,610 TON SUBMARINE ALL BY MYSELF

noreply@blogger.com (Al Bossence) — Sat, 19 Sep 2026 22:10:09 +0000

WITH A JOB TO DO, THESE GOATS ARE ACTUALLY AT WORK

A cloudy one and a touch cool. It is that time of the season when the clothing transition begins between short-sleeved shirts and shorts, and long-sleeved shirts and pants. I even slipped on a light nylon jacket over my long sleeves this morning.

A SATURDAY MORNING FARMER FERTILIZING HIS FIELD WITH A WELL KNOWN LOCALLY MANUFACTURED MANURE SPREADER

Sometimes, when I slip up to Goderich for a few things, it is not always the sole reason for my journey. As often as not, I just like to go somewhere different, and maybe see something differnt along the way. This morning, it had to do with goats. Lots of them, and hard at work they were too. And they were all working for the town of Goderich. There are areas along the steep shoreline embankment that are hard for maintenance crews to get to and keep cleaned out. So, somebody came up with the idea of sending in a herd of goats to do the job and take care of all the overgrown grass, shrubs, and trees, and from what I saw, the plan seems to be working like a charm. The area the goats are in is just across the road from Goderich's water treatment plant on the road between St. Christopher's Beach and Rotary Cove.

A Blast From Our Past:: With Facebook yesterday throwing me a memory from our September East Coast Travels in 2018, I remembered the day I got to tour a submarine all by myself. I sure did. My Onondaga Submarine Tour

GROANER'S CORNER:(( If you are on Facebook, You might find this humorously interesting. ... A 76-year-old woman walked down the hallway of the Clearview Addictions Clinic, searching for the right department. She passed signs for the "Heroin Addiction Department (HAD)," the "Smoking Addiction Department (SAD)" and the "Bingo Addiction Department (BAD)." Then she spotted the department she was looking for: "Facebook Addiction Department (FAD)." It was the busiest department in the clinic, with about three dozen people filling the waiting room, most of them staring blankly into their Blackberries and iPhones. A middle-aged man with unkempt hair was pacing the room, muttering,"I need to milk my cows. I need to milk my cows." A twenty-something man was prone on the floor, his face buried in his hands, while a curly-haired woman comforted him. "Don't worry. It'll be all right." "I just don't understand it. I thought my update was LOL-worthy, but none of my friends even clicked the 'like' button." "How long has it been?" "Almost five minutes. That's like five months in the real world." The 76-year-old woman waited until her name was called, then followed the receptionist into the office of Alfred Zulu, Facebook Addiction Counselor. "Please have a seat, Edna," he said with a warm smile. "And tell me how it all started." "Well, it's all my grandson's fault. He sent me an invitation to join Facebook. I had never heard of Facebook before, but I thought it was something for me, because I usually have my face in a book." "How soon were you hooked?" "Faster than you can say 'create a profile.' I found myself on Facebook at least eight times each day -- and more times at night. Sometimes I'd wake up in the middle of the night to check it, just in case there was an update from one of my new friends in India . My husband didn't like that. He said that friendship is a precious thing and should never be outsourced." "What do you like most about Facebook?" "It makes me feel like I have a life. In the real world, I have only five or six friends, but on Facebook, I have 674. I'm even friends with Juan Carlos Montoya." "Who's he?" "I don't know, but he's got 4,000 friends, so he must be famous." "Facebook has helped you make some connections, I see." "Oh yes. I've even connected with some of the gals from high school -- I still call them 'gals.' I hadn't heard from some of them in ages, so it was exciting to look at their profiles and figure out who's retired, who's still working, and who's had some work done. I love browsing their photos and reading their updates. I know where they've been on vacation, which movies they've watched, and whether they hang their toilet paper over or under. I've also been playing a game with some of them." "Let me guess. Farmville?" "No, Mafia Wars. I'm a Hitman. No one messes with Edna." "Wouldn't you rather meet some of your friends in person?" "No, not really. It's so much easier on Facebook. We don't need to gussy ourselves up. We don't need to take baths or wear perfume or use mouthwash. That's the best thing about Facebook -- you can't smell anyone. Everyone is attractive, because everyone has picked a good profile pic. One of the gals is using a profile pic that was taken, I'm pretty certain, during the Eisenhower Administration. " "What pic are you using?" "Well, I spent five hours searching for a profile pic, but couldn't find one I really liked. So I decided to visit the local beauty salon." "To make yourself look prettier?" "No, to take a pic of one of the young ladies there. That's what I'm using." "Didn't your friends notice that you look different?" "Some of them did, but I just told them I've been doing lots of yoga." "When did you realize that your Facebooking might be a problem?" "I realized it last Sunday night, when I was on Facebook and saw a message on my wall from my husband: 'I moved out of the house five days ago. Just thought you should know.'" "What did you do?" "What else? I unfriended him, of course!"
